Small 3.0 earthquake felt in Sooke and area Pirjo Raits Sooke News Mirror
At 3:20 p.m. on Aug. 29 a thunderous rumble and a tremor, which could be felt underfoot, signalled a earthquake in the Sooke region. While it was not large, according to the Richter Magnitude Scale, it was large enough to be recorded as 3.0. Shortly after questioning whether others had heard or felt anything, comments on the Sooke
News Mirror’s Facebook page said the quake had been felt in Otter Point, Shirley and everywhere in between. Comments such as, “the house shook after a loud explosion; heard the rumble then the house shook; my house actually jumped; felt it so much at Whiffin Spit that my chair moved; and a picture fell of the neighbour’s mantle.” were posted on the site. The earthquake was centered 10 kms. northwest of Colwood toward Sooke Lake, and was 25 kms.

While Sooke does not have a full-scale emergency evacuation plan, there are a few things people can do to help themselves. Sooke Fire Chief Steve Sorensen said, “the best thing to do to be prepared is to look after your self, home, workplace and
car. We will have limited resources. If your house collapses we will open up the community hall.” Sorensen said there are back-up plans to utilize schools if necessary. He re-emphasized that the first plan of action should be to ensure your family and neighbours are looked after with essentials such as water, food, blankets, portable radio, shelter. Some communities already have a pod system where neighbours look after neighbours.
Currently there is a group in place, the Local Government Emergency Program Advisor y Commission (LG EPAC), a function of the Capital regional District. Sorensen said they are working out how they can help each other out if some natural disaster were to take place. The LG EPAC meets monthly and consists of a representative of the emergency program from eachCapitalRegionalDistrict municipality and electoral area. A representative of

B.C. Premier Christy Clark held a press conference on Aug. 29 to speak to the departure of Finance Minister Kevin Falcon. Clark praised Falcon for his work over the last 12 years as transportation minister, health minister and in her administration as finance minister. “He took his job and did what British Columbians expected from him. He made sure that our province remained a safe harbour for investments, a place that can create jobs for families in some of the toughest economic times we’ve seen internationally, so I really want to thank him for that cause he’s put our province on the right track,”
Clark told reporters. She said Falcon will be leaving government in order to focus on his family life. He is expecting his second child. “His decision was a family decision,” Clark said. “It’s a tough calling in politics when you are trying to think about how you’re going to look after your family.” Clark also spoke to the reshuffling of the BC Liberal Party cabinet and caucus, which is to be announced sometime this week. “We need to go into the new election campaign with a new team. We need to balance the core of experience that we have which I think deserves to be re-elected given the great fundamentals we have in our province.” Other members of cabinet who will not
seek re-election include George Abbott, education minister, Mary McNeil, children and family development minister and John Les, Chilliwack MLA and parliamentary secretary.

Locals will be taken prisoner Prominent members of the community will be “incarcerated” for the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock jail-a-thon outside Coast Capital Savings on Sept. 15. “It can be a really incredible fundraiser,” said Jane Beddows, co-ordinator for local Tour de Rock fundraising events. “What we do is people put forth names from the community, and they get arrested and thrown into a make-shift jail.” The honorary prisoners will be transported to their chicken wire cells in the the form of “charitable arrests” by off duty, volunteer police officers. The jail-a-thon will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Between that time frame, residents can drop by to help post bail, which will be a fundraising goal of between $100 to $500 per person. “We encourage everybody to come out and bail out their favourite person,” Beddows said. “Hopefully, they’ll have a list of friends and family and customers or patients that will be willing to pledge or offer money either

A young music composer won top place in the intermediate division for the B.C. Registered Music Teachers Composing Competition. Sooke resident, Carmyn Slater, 13, composed a Jewish Klezmer ensemble called Echoes From Montreal to earn first place for an original work for a solo instrument or any combination of instruments. The work was a product of her Victoria Symphony New Exploration Workshops, where she works with professional musicians who helped develop and polish the composition. According to Slater, the song, written for violins, clarinets, trombones, vibraphones, and percussion instruments, was crafted to emulateKlezmeremusic

resonating through the streets of Montreal in the early 1900s. “It’s like the music is echoing throughout Montreal around that time,” she said. Along with going home with a provincial award, Slater also got honourable mention at the national competition with the Canadian Federation of Music
Teacher’s Associations. Slater, who has playing the piano and composing music since the age of four, said the task usually takes about two months, and usually without too much difficulty. “I like doing it, so it comes pretty easily to me,” she said, adding the accomplishment, which is one of many, is welcomed. “I’m at the bottom of my age category, so it feels pretty good that they’re recognizing my work.” According to her mother, Caralyn Cole, Slater showed a natural inclination for music at a young age. “She showed an aptitude for it. I noticed she was already picking out little tunes when she was four and she could play things by ear right from the beginning.” In order to nurture her daughter’s talent,

Cole did some research and found music teacher Pamela Smirl of PJ Music Studios, under whom Slater still studies to this day. She is currently in Grade 9 piano, and also plays the flute in the Journey middle school band. But her creative talents are not just restricted to music, as Slater also enjoys art and creative writing. “Music and writing are her two creative outlets,” Cole said. Slater is currently working on her first novel. Other music writing awards at the national level include second place for Not Another Sonatina in 2011, first place for Scene from a Magic Carpet in 2010, second place for Rushin’ Horses in 2009 and first place for Ballet Reverence in 2008.

Get real at Lace ‘Em Up What’s more Canadian than hockey? Nothing. This week there is an event happening which could change a young person’s life in many ways. Hockey is about team spirit, sportsmanship and exercise. It can help define a youngster and give them a venue for their energy. The Lace ‘Em Up Hockey event, taking place for one day only on Friday, Sept.7 at SEAPARC arena is a chance for kids who have never played hockey to give it a try. This event is open to males and females and they get to bring along a friend who may not have It’s real had the opportunity to try interaction out Canada’s national sport. They don’t have to be the with real greatest player or the high people... scorer, but they can be part of a team if they decide they like the sport. The kids don’t even have to have their own equipment, they can borrow some from someone or efforts will be made to find some to borrow. The kids don’t even have to know how to skate for that matter. It doesn’t get any easier than that. Sooke has a great arena and a very active hockey scene and both those have given many kids an outlet for their excessive energy. This is a good and positive event and each year it has proven to be a lot of fun. It’s never too late to learn something new. The beginning of the school year is also an opportunity to get kids involved in many different sports. It’s good for their health, both mentally and physically and, best of all, it gets them away from computers, cell phones and television. It’s real interaction with real people in a real world. It’s real.

Seperating oil from manure B.C. Views I was as surprised as anyone to hear about the plan by this newspaper’s owner, David Black, to begin regulatory work on an oil refinery for Kitimat. I’ll leave it to others to comment on the practicality of that plan, and whether it would make the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline project more acceptable to B.C.’s government and population. Black Press news coverage, columns, letters to the editor and other reader comments are not affected by this project, and there has been a range of views expressed already. Whatever the merits of the refinery idea, it has advanced the debate over pipelines and the place of oil in our society. And that’s a good thing, because as someone with a basic knowledge of chemistry and some experience in oil refining, I have noticed a lot of ignorance about the subject. Today I’d like to address some of the main misconceptions, which have been exploited by some opponents. The first one is oil pollution in general and how it gets into the environment. A global study by the Smithsonian Institution in 1995 calculated the amount of oil making its way into oceans this way: Big tanker spills accounted for 37 million gallons a year, about five per cent of the total marine oil pollution identified. By far the largest source was oil runoff from land into drains, from
oil changes, municipal and industrial wastes and other sources: 363 million gallons. Bilge cleaning and other routine ship maintenance added 137 million gallons, four times the tanker spill average. Air pollution from vehicles and industry deposited hydrocarbon particles equal to another 97 million gallons; natural seeps added 62 million gallons; offshore drilling discharges accounted for 15 million gallons. So that’s the first thing to understand. It’s not tankers and pipelines doing most of the polluting. It’s you and me. Then there is the propaganda about greenhouse gas emissions from the oil sands crude. Actor Robert Redford is one of the highestprofile pitchmen for the false notion that “tar sands” oil generates three times the greenhouse gases as conventional oil. The facts are clear. The most widely cited source is a graph prepared by Cambridge Energy Research Associates, which shows that 75 per cent of greenhouse gases from all types of crude occur when the gasoline, jet fuel and diesel are burned by the end user. Yes, there are variations in emissions on the remaining quarter. Emissions from mined oil sands crude are slightly higher than steam extraction, which is slightly higher than conventionally drilled and pumped crude. The most greenhouse gas-intensive crude used in North America is California heavy crude, which is conventionally drilled.
Burning coal produces far more greenhouse gases than oil, as University of Victoria climate scientist Andrew Weaver has calculated. Two U.S. environmental groups, including the one fronted by Redford, have lately been promoting a study that suggests oil sands crude is more corrosive to pipelines. False, says the industry, showing analysis of pipes that have carried diluted bitumen for decades. The Trans-Mountain pipeline has been carrying crude from Alberta to Burnaby and Washington state for more than 60 years. It has periodically carried heavy crude for 40 years, and diluted bitumen for 25 years. Some of that crude is refined in Washington and the gasoline and diesel barged up to supply B.C. gas stations. And of course Vancouver Island, Haida Gwaii and all other B.C. islands depend on marine fuel shipments. And let’s not forget the most common heavy oil used in B.C. It’s called asphalt. Smart meters not that smart I have had problems with the unauthorized Smart Meter installation, even with a registered letter to BC Hydro not to install the Smart Meter where I live in Sooke weeks before it was installed even with signs at the meter and on the door. The installation blew my television set and the insurance company paid for a new television but I had to pay the deductible of $200. I made a claim to BC Hydro to pay for the deductible and their reply was that to offer compensation would

Back country access wanted Openness and transparency in the district apparently doesn’t apply to public records when it comes to legal affairs, and I was rather astounded to find not
even council knows what the district is being sued for. There is no list of current legal matters available to council, and on any given day a councillor could find his or herself chatting with the plaintiff in litigation naming the district as a defendant. Fortunately, BC Court services online can be accessed by anyone to find out what the district is up to behind its most secret closed doors. I was quite surprised to find the district has retained a lawyer to help the CRD keep our back country closed, in this case with the gate on Glintz Lake Road. As with Harbourview Road, the district is using our tax dollars to help the CRD deny it is a public road. Not knowing the district was already involved, (and apparently neither did anyone on council), I recently went before council to request the district take an affirmative interest in the proceedings on Glintz Lake Road, because it provides access to a site at the top of Ragged Mountain that the owners want to utilize for communication towers, and if accessible, it would be a suitable alternative site for the Alcatel/Lucent tower planned for downtown Sooke. They currently can’t do it, because the
property is landlocked with a private gate obstructing the road. The road is also an alternative route into Sooke Mountain Provincial Park and the owner has indicated he would be receptive to permitting access to the park if the district helps get the road open. I have made the Statement of Claim and the district’s reply available online to anyone that would like the district to get on the right side of this and quit wasting our money. Since litigation is by its nature adversarial, my suggestion is that someone at the district try a cooperative approach, pick up the phone and call the plaintiff’s lawyer and ask if we can help the plaintiff in return for a settlement. Jordan River and Shirley’s coastline happen to be the prettiest, therefore a decision was made that our highway would make for better television and will be closed to accommodate the helicopter filming of this event. There was no input from the Shirley community in any of these decisions. No other triathlon held in Canada requires any road closures, only in Shirley. When we finally got to meet with Dr. Matt Mortenson, the triathlon committee and sponsor, the majority, if not all, of the plans and arrangements were already in place. Mr. Dave Saunders representing Saunders Subaru assured us that if we do not want the triathlon going through Shirley we just need to let him know and he will put a stop to it. I have already sent my request to Mr. Dave Saunders and so have a few others. The Saunders Foundation is donating an AED to Shirley Volunteer Fire Department. A water station was manned by Shirley residents to “earn” this AED. The Subaru Sooke Triathlon should stay in Sooke and not be allowed to force road closures. Thank you. Christien Shipton Shirley

‘Protector’ says Parliament was a genius I will participate in the District of Sooke community affairs and I will be respectful. I promise. I am me, in every way from the heart. “… those who sit at the council table and vote without understanding the issues, or vote to satisfy a personal agenda.” That’s what Gail Hall wrote in her “No one acted alone” letter to the Sooke News Mirror (Aug. 15, 2012). People are not supposed to act alone in these capacities. Not understanding things, but yelling so loudly that others don’t understand is an ancient offensive tactic. We are a proper community with patterns of communications and standards. The personal agenda that I see, taste and feel is in my opinion, Gail’s. So Gail, to what degree are you willing to go to be heard for the sake of being heard? Personally, I think we have a great administration team at the District of Sooke. Period. That great team was created by hiring and for her to spew more labelled inefficiencies in certain directions in order to seem to be acting as some stalwart journey guide is unfair to our public employees – both those who did the hiring and those who were hired. Enough already. I am a shepherd, I protect. Your letter seeks to assign blame and I feel obliged to address it. I believe we need more open mindedness, not less. For clarity: She uses the words, ”complicit” (defined as an association or participation in or as if in a wrongful act) and ”scheme” (defined as an underhand plot). This is part of a false and malicious statement that seems bent on damaging somebody’s reputation. Have you heard me yet? This is the protector speaking. I have no issue with change. Be proper, be respectful. Then all is well. I answer, I speak/write about some of those that aren’t. Her statement that “Sooke has travelled like a ship with no master…” has stirred things up, no matter the cost. Like we should listen to her. Like she has something to say to us and we should hear it or else we won’t know “…important emotional content.”
Evan Parliament is a great team leader – and while he was our Chief Administrative Officer (CAO,) he helped the District of Sooke achieve so much. Dave Devana (ex-)Director of Finance is a good man, in every sense of the word. And for those of you, that when you read the word achieve, back a few words, thought “achieve debt”… you know nothing of math. I do. Behind both of these men stand Mayor Janet Evans, Councillors Ron Dumont, Sheila Beech, Maja Tait and Dave Bennett. To me this adds up to interest, morality and clear vision of an elected group. They are all good moral people. This is where genius is evident and Evan Parliament is a genius. His ability to coordinate is remarkable in my opinion, and I’ve worked with top flight executive teams at Bell Canada’s BSSi. The number of directors that we have had is because we are a young municipality. Holidays are not what this VISA card stuff with the travel to China was all about. As stated in the 2010 District of Sooke annual report, that trip put Sooke staff in touch with potentially valuable contacts and offered much inspiration. So writing what you wrote was pure negative speculation and is full of ego about how things are, how things should be and how we get them there. Wake up. You’re full of hot air. It doesn’t sound good and anyone who tells you that it does, needs better hearing aids. When the community reads what you’ve written, they have then heard you and you like this. Now it’s Gail Hall, over a collected spirit of health and growth. I’m writing on this subject again following my letter of last week because I truly believe somebody needs to step up and shine a positive light on this community. Here I am and I’m not going away. Avoiding discord for the whole sometimes feels rather intense for a few. So be it. LOOKING BACK A trip through the Sooke News Mirror time machine: Sept. 2, 1987 Sooke driver wins at Western Mark Jarvis, of Sooke, drove his 1969 Nash Rambler to victory in the street class at Western Speedway last week. He said the car, with a 369 BV Javelin motor and transmission in it, performed “beautifully” in a win that was particularly satisfying to him because he dethroned a driver who had won the event for three years in a row. Mr. Jarvis said the victory over a dozen other cars was worth $80 to him. He competes in what is known as bracket racing. Cars don’t race head-to-head but instead are timed over a course only an eighth of a mile long. “In this event it is the driver with the best reactions behind the wheel and the most consistent times who wins,” he said. Sept. 2, 1992 CRD subsidies blamed for business woes A Sooke businessman said unfair subsidies by the Capital Regional District have hurt his business and cost eight people jobs. However, a CRD spokesman said the man would have been considered for the subsidy if he had his project ready on deadline. Hans Rasmussen, whose company, RasCan, produces home composters, said a CRD decision to exclude his business from a subsidy deal has allowed firms from Ontario and Manitoba to drastically undercut him and other B.C. composter producers. Rasmussen questions why taxpayer dollars are being spent out of province when there are perfectly good products at home. “That’s the trouble with government getting into business,” he said. “They don’t care about the cost and they don’t care about the feasibility.” But the CRD’s Glenn Milbury said that RasCan was given every opportunity to beat the Ontario offers,and even got special consideration because they were local. But their product delivered was a day late, and even then
it didn’t measure up to the eastern products. Sept. 4, 1996 New school under budget The construction superintendent claims it’s $1 million over budget. The architect contends there is a $500,000 over run. But the person who keeps tabs on the Sooke School District’s finances insists the new community school is not only on budget, but under budget.
Sooke School District secretary treasurer, Dave Lockyer, projects a $5,000 surplus upon the new school’s completion. But even with the surplus, the price tag pinned to the stateof-the-art facility has grown from what was initially reported. When the new school was announced in late October 1994, after being bumped from a list of $339 million worth of school capital projects earlier in
the year, the budget was set at $18.8 million. Numbers provided by Lockyer to school board chair Diane Bernard Friday has the total cost of the project pegged at $19.6 million. Sept. 3, 1997 Development plans prompts East Sooke residents to form rural association A new association is springing up to give East Sooke residents who cherish their rural lifestyle a voice. Rural Association has spawned out of the diverse and opposing views created by a developer’s plan to create a 274-home seaside master-planned community, complete with marina, golf course and lodge. East Sooke resident Derek Mallard is an environmental activist and one of the organizers of the new association. “This development is going to commence the destruction of that (rural) atmosphere. Full
opportunity must be given to the people here to voice what their preferences are,” Mallard said of the community facing a cross roads. A questionnaire was delivered to all residents of East Sooke asking for feedback on forming the association. Sept. 1, 2010 It’s time to be bear aware Conservation officers are warning the public that bears will be a problem in September and October.
Peter Pauwels, conservation officer for the South Coast region, said they have already dealt with five bears which had to be put down in the Sooke area. “It’s a major, major problem out there, typical for August,” said Puwels, referring to bear bear encounters in areas around McMillan Road, Journey and Ecole Poirier schools, the Otter Point Fire Hall, Robinson, Tugwell and West Coast Road.

onst. Chris Fernandes has a new love in his life – cycling. Fernandes is representing the Nanaimo RCMP on the Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock 2012 team. At 59, he is also one of the oldest riders to tackle the Tour, but he’s motivated by his quest for a new athletic challenge and the fact that his two-year-old granddaughter was diagnosed with leukemia in September. Raising money to fight childhood cancer seemed like something he could do to fight back. “You get this feeling of helplessness, where you’d like to help, but there’s nothing you can do. In my case, there is something I can do,” Fernandes said. For Fernandes it’s no big deal to hike to the top of Mount Benson in Nanaimo or hop on a bike and put 50 kilometres under his tires. “I like challenging myself,” Fernandes said. “I’m not afraid to breathe hard. The way I see it is if I stay in shape well enough and I see something and I want to try it, I can still do it.” His newfound love for cycling came as a surprise to him, but it was evident at the end of the first 20-kilometre training ride in March when the trainees returned to the Parksville RCMP detachment and Fernandes opted to cycle back to his home in Nanaimo instead of catching a lift back to town. “Other than riding to work, I hadn’t done a lot of biking,”

Fernandes said. “This has been kind of a bonus because I’ve actually found another sport that I really enjoy doing.” But even someone in Fernandes’s physical condition is tested by Tour de Rock training, especially on “speed nights” when riders train to produce high bursts of speed over a 36-kilometer course, much of it uphill, to build stamina and lung capacity. Fernandes previously fundraised before for Vision Quest and for Nanaimo Search and Rescue and hopes to raise at least $10,000 during this year’s Tour de Rock for pediatric cancer research. “As much as I can,” he said.

Different community groups will dot the shore of Whiffin Spit for the Sooke Community Arts Council’s fifth Beach Art event on Sept. 9. According to Sandra Scafe, Sooke Community Arts Council president, Beach Art has gained momentum over time, with about 150 people coming out last year. “Beach Art has sort of developed a life of its own,” she said, adding the community has evolved Beach Art into what it is today. “We never said be on a team or wear a certain colour or anything. People just did it so it seemed to capture a sort of spirit of its own, and people just have a blast.” With a two-hour time limit, groups claim a spot along Whiffin Spit and erect structures or sculptures built from items found on the beach. “They can’t bring in any tools or anything from outside,” Scafe said. “If it’s got to be

Sandra Scafe, in 2011 with “The Chief.” tied up with something it would have to be rope from the beach.” Other then using impromptu sourced materials,thegroupsare given creative license to build whatever their minds conjure up. “It can be 2-D, it can be flat, we get a lot of sea monsters and creative things,” she said, adding last year, a First Nations group crafted an entire scene with a chief, built out of driftwood, welcoming visitors in a canoe to land. This year there
will be three judges, Sooke artists Yo David, and Will Gordon and Councillor Maja Tait. The judges, who will be travelling up and down the Spit via bicycle, will be evaluating each sculpture on degree of difficulty, creativity and originality. “It’s a really hard job for the judges. I judged last year and we really had a tough time because there was so many that were really good,” Scafe said. The event is one of four organized by the
Sooke Community Arts Council, and the umbrella arts association hopes to continue long into the future. “It just sort of captures the essence of the Sooke community, so it’s something that we really want to keep doing,” she said. “It’s to promote the community, the West Coast community of Sooke, and to celebrate the arts.” Registration will begin at 12 p.m., and the event is free of charge. There will be cash prizes and rankings will go up to sixth place.

Angela Menzies is a painter of nudes. Sure, she also includes dogs and cats every once in awhile, but her main focus is the female form with all its curves and lines. She celebrates women in a non-sexual way. Her view is the beauty of women as seen in such simple acts as bathing, curled on a rug or sitting in a chair. They are, if an explanation is needed, exotic. Not erotic, not sexual and not offensive in any way. “I’m inspired by wild women and bad dogs,” she explains. Menzies and her mother, Bonnie Coulter, will be showing their recent work at the Sooke Harbour House for the month of September. At first the women were to have a joint show, entitled “Breaking the Line,” but things changed. Menzies had her felted fibre piece, “Tidal Watcher,” selected for showing at the recent Sooke Fine Arts Show and Coulter had her composite piece, “Seeking Sooke River” selected as well. Coulter is both a painter and a multimedia artist who considers her world her inspiration. Whether it is the old salmon cans or the found objects along the rocky shoreline of her home in East Sooke, she sees art in all of it. Her canned salmon series are sculptures of the fish made from salmon tins. Her precision comes from a life as a draftsman and the ideas from a lifetime of living. Studio while Coulter’s is the Boar’s Bristle. An interesting aside is a blog site where Menzies prompts herself to think and look at art in different ways each Friday. “I was getting stagnant and unmotivated,” said Menzies. “Life gets in the way.” As Fridays are
her studio days, she decided to explore other methods and mediums for her artistic expression. So, she came up with what she calls “art prompts.” This allows her creative juices to flow and empowers her to get going. It was this avenue that allowed her to work on her felted/

Guiding is a lot more than just selling cookies You have all seen them over the years — girls in Sparks, Brownies, Guides and Pathfinders out and about in Sooke. These girls have all joined Girl Guides of Canada for a different reason. For some, the desire to go camping inspires them; for others it is a wish to be with their friends. Some girls have heard we love to craft and sing, and others just like the idea of trying new things. Girl Guides is this and more and is alive and well and growing here in Sooke. Last year the girls participated in a range of activities — lots of camping, in cabins and tents; travel and hosteling; glass and ceramic crafts; singing and dancing; service projects such as helping collect for WildARC and the local food bank; and making birthday parties in boxes for distribution by CASA. At the District Camp at the end of the year girls went hunting and panning for “gold,” tried out canoeing and archery and spent a weekend getting to know all the other girls involved in guiding in Sooke. The end of the year was celebrated with a party at the Sooke Flats complete with cake and one of the torrential rainstorms we have experienced this year. The highlight of the party was the awards. The Lady Baden Powell Challenge (the highest award in Guides) was earned by April Petrie, Samantha Larocque, Sabrina Montgomery and Emily Phillips. The Canada Cord, the highest award you can

Dapps Hockey Challenge holds third year The hockey school had on ice and off ice activities for club participants in the SEAPARC area

The Dapps Hockey Challenge held it’s third camp at the SEAPARC arena from Aug. 26-30. The kids, aged between six to 12, participated in the camp, which is designed to teach children all they need to know about hockey. “They’re just learning everything you need to be a hockey player and, most importantly, [they’re] having fun,” said camp founder, Rich D’Appolonia. The kids covered a variety of different techniques like stick handling, puck control and power skating. In addition to spending time on the ice, the kids participated in dry land activities like capture the flag, road hockey and ‘Man-tracker.’ After four days of working on skills and drills, the camp is wrapped up with a fun day, where the kids take a dip in the pool, hold scrimmage games and play a “huge crazy game of capture the flag.” According to D’Appolonia, the camp has grown in size since it’s inception, from 16 kids the first year to now about 43. “This is my third year doing it, and every year I get more kids,” D’Appolonia said, adding about 10 kids were turned away this year due to a lack of ice. As a parent, D’Appolonia started up the camp to offer a more affordable hockey school for kids. “It’s probably the cheapest camp on the Island,” he said. “I try to make it about the kids more, I’m not here to make a lot of money.” The camp costs $300 per child.

This week’s SEAPARC Star is 7 year old Hana Beatty (a.k.a. Hurricane Hana). She is a grade two student at Ecole Poirier where her favourite subject is Math. Hana speaks 3 languages (English, French and Czeck) and knows some words in Coast Salish too. Her sports interests include baseball, skiing (water and snow), badminton and soccer but she says that she would like to learn to play tennis someday too. She plays ball with Sooke Minor Fastball and won a bronze medal last season! Hana likes to play on the trampoline, help out around the house and go to work with her Dad, even though (according to Hana), Dad makes her do all the hard work! When we asked Hana what she is good at; her reply was writing and being a good sister (she did disclose that she enjoys playing tricks on her sister and she is very good at that too)! Hana plans on being a Marine Biologist when she grows up because she loves dolphins and has actually swam with dolphins during family vacations to Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Her Dad tells us that Hana doesn’t do anything half way; she puts her all into everything she does. He added that she is a tough little cookie too, with NO fear! He also described her as a very funny, loving and determined young lady who can be extremely demanding. It was a pleasure talking to Hana and we would like to thank her for being our SEAPARC Star of the Week. Reach for the stars Hana; with your determination, you will go far!

The Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina hosted its third Vancouver Island Classic Derby from Aug. 30 to Sept.1. The derby offered a grand prize of $15,000 for the largest chinook or spring salmon reeled in from the Juan de Fuca Strait. Lindsay Beckett, event organizer, said only 13 teams entered, which was down from about 50 in 2010. “It’s quite a huge drop in participation. I honestly think it’s just eco-

Exhibition game kicks off season The Sooke Minor Hockey Association kicked off their hockey season with an exhibition game featuring the Nanaimo Clippers and Victoria Grizzlies on Aug. 28 at the SEAPARC arena. The Sooke Region Chamber of Commerce will be holding their 10th Annual Golf Tournament & Dinner event on Thursday, Sept. 13 at DaMamiel Creek Golf Course. According to chamber member, Karen Mason, the event is one of the organization’s largest fundraisers for the year. But it’s not all about raising money, as the fundraiser also doubles as a community event. “It really is meant to be a totally fun, social event,” Mason said. There are 72 tickets available for the price of $60, which includes a nine-hole game, a hot dog lunch and a steak, salad and potato dinner. There will also be a golf cart wheeling around the golf course selling beverages. Although difficult, entrants will have the chance to win big if they bag a hole-inone on certain holes. There will be a $10,000 prize for the first hole, and on another there will be a chance to win a Subaru vehicle. The event also holds a live auction and distributes a wide-array of prizes. “There’s a full range of prizes and what we do... with a couple of the large prizes is we have a live auction to auction off the higher ticket items,” Mason said. September is the best time to fish September is here and the fishing continues to be good. With the good weather continuing, the last push of quality springs are heading through our local waters. There has been some good reports of chinooks being caught from Otter Point to Muir Creek. Rollie Rose reported steady action on Monday, limiting on springs on his morning charter. He commented that the chinooks he caught were still very bright. Hopefully that means there are still some good chinooks to be had. Usually at this time of year the big white Harrison River chinooks satrt showing up. They are big and put up a good fight. Shouldn’t be long

September, in my opinion, is the best time to fish off Sooke. Good weather, lots of fish and not as many
boats. The only down side is when you catch a big wild coho it has to be released. The Port Renfrew Labour Day derby was held this past weekend and a 35-pound chinook took top honours. Everyone had a good time with good weather and lots of money was raised for
the Four Mile Hatchery on the San Juan River, which continues to produce chinook and coho. On a sad note for anglers, halibut will be closed coast-wide as of midnight, Sept. 9, 2012 until the end of the year. The new measure to keep halibut open longer has not seemed to work. Last year halibut closed on Sept. 5 — go figure. They say more anglers are targeting halibut making for the early closure. Commercial halibut will continue for another two months. As of Sept. 4, 2012, wild coho can be taken at the mouth of the Port San Juan, check DFO regulations on where you can fish. Until next time keep you rod tip up. Kiwi Magic
