the week ahead Vinyl CafĂŠ comes to The Cultch When Dave Cooked a Turkey aired on Stuart McLean’s Vinyl CafĂŠ, a new Christmas tradition was born. October also marks the release date for his new four-CD collection: Christmas Pack. “Canada’s favourite story tellerâ€? will be at The Cultch on September 6 and 7 at 7:30. Who said that luxury car shows had to be only about the cars? At last year’s event, Real Housewives Jody and Reiko enjoyed the garden party and fashion show, two features that will be making a popular return at this year’s event at Van Dusen Gardens on Sept. 8 and 9. And yes, there will be dozens of cars to ooh and aah over. Here are the top 10 cars that will be on display: 2013 Aston Martin Vanquish, 1933 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 by Figoni, 2013 Bentley Continental GT Speed, 1990 Ferrari F-40, 1951 Ferrari 212 Export Vignale Coupe, 1967 Lamborghini Miura, 1947 Humber Sedanca D’Ville (Owned by King George VI), 1967 Toyota 2000GT, 1939 McLaughlin Buick Royal Tour car, and 1964 Aston Martin DB5 (famous for being the first James Bond car). 10 Fall beauty indulgences on a budget ShopTalk
Clarins Odyssey Face Palette: By Kelsey Klassen
I
recently tested some new products that are being launched for Fall, and while I was excited to try them all, some clear favourites have emerged. Here are 10 hot new beauty products that will bring easy updates to your routine, available at retailers around Vancouver:
Skin: Revlon ColorStay Whipped Foundation: This hotly anticipated new product is imminently arriving at London Drugs nationwide, but having used it for the past few weeks, I can attest to the delightfully smooth, all-day coverage the mousse-like foundation provides. There is a wide range of skin shades to choose from and it evens out skin tone for a flawless finish, even in the remaining heat of the summer. $18.95 at London Drugs and other beauty retailers.
I know it’s early, but how gorgeous is this Clarins Greek goddess-inspired, Christmas limited-edition Odyssey Face Palette? A beautifully engraved medallion of shiny and matte gold sits atop a compact which begs to be opened. Inside, a silky, lightweight powder, adapted to all skin tones, helps to even and enhance the skin’s beauty while illuminating the face and décolleté. Collector’s makeup at the top of its game. Coming for November to all Clarins retailers. $42
Lips: Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain: A moisturizing lip tint that actually provides a pop of colour has been hard to come by. Enter the Kissable collection — available in 12 long-wearing shades, from peaches to reds and pinks, in a chubby crayon-shaped tube. $9.49 at London Drugs and other beauty retailers.
Maybelline Dream Fresh BB 8-in-1 Beauty Balm: Neck-inneck with the Revlon foundation for ‘new favourite’ is the Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream. Having never used one before, I was intrigued by the cult-like following BB creams boast in many Asian countries. This one has an SPF of 30 and comes out of the tube tinted, to be blended onto your skin with your fingertips. Give it a few minutes to settle before applying blush. Why you’ll love it: the non-greasy, barely-there formula evens out skin tone and blurs imperfections, while giving the skin a noticeable luminous quality. I’ve never gotten so many compliments on my skin. $10.99 at London Drugs and other beauty retailers.

September 6 – 12, 2012
NARS Eyeliner Stylo: Long-lasting, precise eyeliner in one even stroke. The highly pigmented colours in four new shades (black, brown, navy and grey) glide on smoothly and effortlessly for intense payoff that dries quickly and stays put for over 24 hours. The super-fine tip delivers the perfect amount of liquid for controlled application and versatility in line width, and a variety of looks. $32 at all NARS retailers. NARScosmetics.com
Nails: Revlon Nail Art Neon: Neon and two-tone nails are sticking around as a Fall beauty trend. Get the look in only two steps with the limited-edition Neon Nail Art duo, a white base coat and bold neon colour in one. $8.95 at London Drugs and other beauty retailers.
FreezeFrame Lip Injection: Packaged in a clever syringe-shaped applicator, this “needle-free” lip treatment promises to “plump lips and smooth lip wrinkles instantly.” A thin coat of the cinnamon-smelling product goes on smoothly and results in an instant tingling sensation within the lips. The result is fuller-looking lips, with the bonus of being clinically proven to increase lip volume with time. $89 at London Drugs.
NYX Roll On Shimmer: NYX Professional Makeup was developed by Toni Ko to provide quality cosmetics at affordable prices. The Roll On Shimmer for eyes, face and body glides on smoothly and precisely for a subtle, colour-tinted shine. $5 at London Drugs and other beauty retailers.
combing don’t always result in perfect brows on their own. An essential part of an effortless look is filling in the brows with an eyebrow pencil or shadow. The Marcelle brow pencil with tinted blending wand is an easy-to-use tool to define your eyebrows. $14.95 at London Drugs and other beauty retailers.
Eyes: Marcelle Duo Eyebrow Pro: Blush, mascara and wellgroomed eyebrows are all a girl needs to look her most put-together on the fly, but threading, waxing, plucking and
Hair: Black 15in1: First came the celebrityfavourite Black 15in1 Miracle Hair Treatment ($24). Then the Miracle Twice A Week Shampoo ($24) and Conditioner ($26), which, when used as a trio on my colour-treated blonde hair, is like a hair cut in a bottle. The paraben- and sulfatefree formula relies on nourishing ingredients such as sunflower seed and green tea leaf extracts to revitalize your scalp and hair follicles, promising 15 distinct results. Once you’re hooked, you can pick up a CATSA-approved travel kit, now available in Vancouver salons such as Workshop, Flaunt, Levista and Maude for $30. Black15in1.com

When Bob Rennie took on the challenge of selling condos at Olympic Village, he used the promise of stores such as London Drugs and Urban Fare as a lure. Now that the stores are helping to create a real sense of community, he told the crowd at Friday morning’s London Drugs opening, it will be easy to sell the remaining 186 units. Martha Perkins photo
Olympic Village’s ‘ghost town cloud’ blowing away By Martha Perkins
W
hen Bob Rennie sold new condo owners on the benefits of moving to Olympic Village, the promise of a London Drugs in the neighbourhood was a big part of his pitch. To be a community, he knew, you needed to be able to shop in the community. On Friday morning, he thanked the Louie family, who own London Drugs, for helping him convince people that “the ghost town cloud” hovering over Olympic Village has dissipated. Selling the last 186 units will be easy now that London Drugs has joined a thriving business community that includes Urban Fare, Terra Breads and Tap and Barrel. “London Drugs was the missing link,” Rennie told the early morning crowd before London Drugs chairman Brandt Louie joined him and other dignitaries in cutting the ribbon. “I’m so proud they stood by us.” “When people come down here, it’s going to blow away their preconceptions,” says Clint Mahlman, the senior vice-president of London Drugs. “There’s a sense of pride here that will tip over. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a community so enthusiastic to see us open. They immediately said, ‘It’s our store.’”

“We needed to make sure the store would cater exactly to the needs of the community,” says president and CEO Wynne Powell. The store’s product lines will reflect what people need to find in the store, an evolving process. This store features a photo centre where you can print photos from Facebook and other social media sites, a private consultation room where you can talk with a pharmacist and, in the future, health and immunization clinics. “That’s the magic of London Drugs.” The store’s other commitment is to sustainability. Enhancing its existing commitment to encouraging shoppers to recycle all kinds of packaging, it is introducing special bins for discarded beauty product packaging. For every package that’s returned to the store, London Drugs will donate two cents to the Canadian Cancer Society. Mahlman says everyone is thrilled that the store has reached its 95 per cent waste diversion goal. It not only includes its highly successful styrofoam recycling initiative — the chain has prevented 67 tonnes of stryofoam from going into the landfill — but goes right down to the dirt that’s swept up from the floor and put in the organic recycling bin as part of its What’s Green Deal program. “This store sets a model for other retailers across North America,” Mahlman says. “Soon our goal is zero waste.”
Important Health & Safety Recall Mr. Coffee Single Cup Brewing System Model #BVMCKG1-03 Jarden Consumer Solutions (JCS), in consultation with Health Canada, is voluntarily recalling the described product due e to a potential safety issue. JCS has received reports that a build-up of steam in the water reservoir can force the brewing chamber to open and expel hot coffee grounds and water, posing a burn hazard. Please see London Drugs customer service for product returns or for more information.

T
his week’s cover girl is Myriam Laroche, the founder of Eco Fashion Week (October 15 to 19, EcoFashion-Week.com). Known for her enthusiasm for everything she does, we asked her to share her love of the West End to help celebrate West End Fest and this city’s love of fashion — especially the sustainable kind. How long have you been living in the West End? Four years. What do you love about it? It’s one of the healthiest neighborhoods to live in downtown Vancouver. Lots of trees, low traffic, proximity to the park and the beach... And the view from my apartment is fabulous, with a sunset every night. Describe for us your perfect day in the West End? I start with a yoga session at the beach or a run on the seawall, then I grab breakfast at Melriche’s coffee house. The rest of the day has to be outside, reading on the beach, tandem ride around Stanley Park (hilarious) or just walking Davie, Denman and Robson.
To eat with friends or for a great date I suggest Lolita’s South of the Border Cantina, a contemporary Mexican restaurant that reminds me of New York, and Tavola, my favorite Italian restaurant in town, where sharing plates is a must. A
tip: ask your waiter to decide for you and enjoy the savory ride. Eco-Fashion Week is becoming hugely popular but it must mean you’re very busy. What’s on you calendar for the next few

weeks (or months)? Eco-Fashion week is 45 days to go, so it’s my social life that will be neglected the most. All my time is dedicated to the event and to take care of myself so I can be extremely productive.

And what about night time in the neighbourhood? A magical sunset on the beach with ice cream cones. Dinner at Tavola on their patio, following the share plate concept. You let the server decide for you and surprise you. What are some of your favourite stores and restaurants? 1. Best Vietnamese place: Pho Central — the spring rolls with black mushroom and the phô soup! Raw beef, extra vegetable please! I love it because it’s fresh, more than affordable and the staff is warm and welcoming. 2. Best Thai place: Thai Basil — Tiny but yummy. I’m in love with their Pad Thai. 3. Health and beauty store: Garden Health (1204 Davie) — As a health maniac, I love their personalized service and great knowledge of health. 4. Melriche’s coffee shop feels like home. A latte + grilled scone (homemade) with butter melting on it, sitting in the front window watching Vancouver people walking on Davie, I call it perfection. Oh and your horoscope is always available at the counter when you order your coffee. Makes me smile every time. 5. I grocery shop at West Valley Market almost every day — fresh, affordable and great staff. 6. I love small places where you feel special. 4750 Main Street

Top 10 restaurants in the West End escape from the mayhem of the city without leaving its main ventricles. The French focus of its cuisine is divinely blurred by Pacific Rim flavours, and the aesthetics have that rare power to make all assembled look and feel a little more beautiful than they actually are. Favourite dish: black truffle and fontina pizza.
OnThePlate By Andrew Morrison
M
y affections for the West End have long been fed by the absurd number of eateries opening and closing on its many blocks. Many of the newcomers never make it past their first birthdays, a fact that would sadden me if it weren’t for the certainty of their swift replacement. Spoiled-for-choice locals and prohibitive rents are partly to blame for the neighbourhood’s famously high turnover rate, but let’s not forget the daunting competition that every new entry faces. Truly, the forest of ”For Lease” signs lining the main drags of Denman, Robson, and Davie stand more as warnings than invitations to newcomers: if you build it, you better damn well have your shit together. Here are my Top 10 picks for the ones that do, in order of their respective awesomeness.
1. Kingyo | 871 Denman St. 604-608-1677 | Kingyo-Izakaya.ca Kingyo plates a menu that combines high-quality sashimi with perfected izakaya standards and all manner of usually fantastic experiments in an environment that is a sexy cut above its casual Japanese competitors (of which there are many). One of the most consistently exciting restaurants in Vancouver. Favourite dish: Tan Tan noodles with ground pork.
2. CinCin | 1154 Robson | 604-688-7338 | CinCin.net This fine dining icon is older than most undergraduates, but it keeps getting stronger with age (no small task to withstand both the financial meltdown and its concurrent tidal wave of new, casual Italian competitors). It’ three prime assets are its leafy second floor patio overlooking Robson, its unparalleled service crew, and the tastes of its omnipresent owner, Jack Evrensel. Favourite dish: anything from the wood-fired oven.
7. Raincity Grill | 1193 Denman St. | 604-685-7337 | RainCityGrill.com
RainCity Grill
4. Nook | 781 Denman | 604-568-4554 | NookRestaurant.ca One of the better casual Italian restaurants in town known for its simple pizzas and house-made pastas. The small room is reminiscent of a diner in an irrepressibly good mood. Well-served and soundtracked, and the wee bar is drop dead cute. Favourite dish: the addictive little chicken liver crostinis.
5. Lolita’s | 1326 Davie | 604-696-9996 | LolitasRestaurant.com This “south of the border cantina” fills nightly on account of its ability to whisk diners away to warmer climes by sheer force of its convincing ambiance. That counts for plenty in the depths of winter (when the margaritas come especially fast and furious). Favourite dish: five cheese stuffed poblano chile relleno.
6. Market | 1115 Alberni | 604-695-1115 | MarketByJG Vancouver.com Celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s coastal flagship in the Shangri-La hotel remains a recessed means of tasty
Now in its 20th year, the old “RG” remains one of a pitiful few Vancouver restaurants within steps of the waterfront (in this case, English Bay) to give a damn about representing the bounty of British Columbia. It gets mercilessly pistolwhipped by tourists in summer, so the best time to go is now upon us. Favourite dish: Sloping Hills’ bacon benedict.
benchmark for the three others that have followed. The room is dark and a little on the loud side, but it’s exceedingly sexy and a seeming fount of youth. It’s hard not to feel very alive in its clutches. Good sake and sochu list, and the cocktails are more considered than others in the izakaya game. Favourite dish: chowder of halibut, scallop, bacon, dashi, and cream.
Fresh Sheet is on page 18 of this week’s WE Vancouver
8. Gyoza King | 1508 Robson | 604-669-8278 | gyokingroup.com A long-time favourite of the restaurant industry, ESL students, and stoners of every stripe (not to mention food writers), Gyoza King is a hole in the wall that only ever disappoints when there are no seats to be had. The service is often delightfully incomprehensible if you don’t speak Japanese, but that only adds to its appeal. Favourite dish: tie between pork gyozas and chicken karaage.
9. La Parisien | 751 Denman | 604-687-1418 | leparisien.ca
The ORIGINAL
This good-looking newcomer from Bistro Pastis owner John Blakeley is like a French version of its casual neighbour, the Italian-themed Nook. The room is happy and contemporary with bistro motifs throughout. Nearly all the classics are on the menu here, everything from moules (three ways) and steak frites and boudin noir and tarte flambee. Dig the tidy little beer list. Favourite dish: beef tartare.
10. Hapa Izakaya | 1479 Robson St. | 604-689-4272 | hapaizakaya.com The original Hapa Izakaya is still the

3. Motomachi Shokudu | 740 Denman | 604-609-0310 Arguably the most charming of Vancouver’s many noodle houses, if not the most delicious. Tokyo-style ramen is the name of the game here, though the broth employed is made with chicken (with fish stock added for balance) rather than the usual fatty pork. The ingredients in the noodle soups are of higher quality as well. Less frenetic service and atmosphere than nearby competitors. Favourite dish: charcoal miso ramen.

Busy? New mom Jennifer Ferguson is the sommelier at Wildebest and part of the genious behind Re-Up BBQ.
Jennifer Ferguson: the sommelier who could (and does) CityCellar By Kurtis Kolt
I
was reading a piece in the New York Times a few weeks back about how we’ve all come to glorify being “busy.” It’s become the knee-jerk response to, “How are you?” by many and when it comes right down to it — whether intentional or not — it’s often a boastful reply. I’ve been consciously trying to ease up on using the word since, really, we’re all busy and on top of that, who cares? Someone I look to for inspiration on this is Lindsay Ferguson, the sommelier at Gastown’s Wildebeest, undoubtedly the hottest new restaurant in town. When James Iranzad and Josh Pape partnered up with Chef David Gunawan to unleash some mighty adventurous, often carnivorous fare over at 120 West Hastings, they had Lindsay first on their list to head up a wine program that could match the menu’s combination of eccentricity and refinement. A certified sommelier, Lindsay has been in wine sales and had been on my management team at Salt Tasting Room a few years back, which is how we’d become closer colleagues and friends. She has an incredible palate and, well, really knows her shit. Through a slew of chance events around that time, her boyfriend Michael and a pal had created the concept of Re-Up BBQ, some creative thought that culminated as one of the very first new food carts on our streets. Their pulled pork and beef brisket quickly became the stuff of legend. She’s helped Re-Up BBQ build as a business and a brand, adding a retail component (bacon!), and soon opening their first bricks-and-mortar location at New Westminster’s River Market. As the business grew, she stepped away from working at Salt and took on a position at Abbott Street’s charming Jules Bistro, overseeing their wine program, matching it toward the French classics on the menu. It was while all of this was building
WEVancouver.com
that the Wildebeest crew approached her. She accepted the sommelier position and that’s when things really got going! Next to the under-construction Re-Up BBQ at the River Market was a fish n’ chips shop, that she, Michael and their partners ended up taking over, re-christening it Fathom and began serving casual sea fare including particularly kick-ass Oyster Po’ Boys. As the food cart hummed along, they built two restaurants in New West, she ran the wine program at Jules and was creating one for Wildebeest. And did I mention she and Michael found out they were expecting their first child? A wedding followed, as did the purchase and renovation of a heritage house in New Westminster because, really, what’s a little houserenovating when you’ve obviously got all of this energy to burn? While she is technically on maternity leave with their adorable daughter Ariana during these first few weeks of Wildebeest’s explosion onto the scene, she is still putting in hours training staff and cultivating a list of classic wine styles that lean to the Old World, many of the bottles being rarities from superior recent vintages thought long-gone from liquor store shelves. On sleepless nights with the baby she spent her time researching online, finding those handful of ’05 Burgundies and ’04 California Cabs gathering dust on the liquor store shelves of everywhere from Revelstoke to Dawson Creek. She’s still doing her thing for Jules Bistro as well, plus the business side of Re-Up and Fathom, and looking to start work on the floor at Wildebeest later in the fall. Yup, she’s busy, but she’s full of energy and excitement about everything going on in her life. In fact, when I met with her to chat about this column, the first thing I said was, “How are you?” Her response? “Awesome.” Find out more about the wine world at KurtisKolt.com or follow him on Twitter @KurtisKolt.

Davie Day transformed into West End Fest By Martha Perkins
T
he West End is more than just the sum of its parts. Each one of those parts has something different to say about one of Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhoods. Each one speaks to the diversity and the eccentricities that have kept the neighbourhood real. Choosing a favourite part would be impossible. That said, Davie Street is one of the main arteries that pumps life into the heart of the West End. It’s always evolving with the times but it also strives to retain the reasons why people love to live here in the first place. It is still a vibrant LGBTQ community and seniors love it for the accessibility of
services. Students and young families find it an affordable and accessible place to start their new lives, too. Stephen Regan is the executive director of the West End BIA, which is behind the September 8 West End Fest on Davie Street. It’s a street party for people who not only live there but who love it as one of their favourite city destinations. He rejoices in the planning choices that have made the West End home to “an eclectic mix of businesses” that reflect the neighbourhood’s sense of community. The BIA is part of the West End evolution. In 2007, the former Davie Village BIA added a few more blocks of Davie, plus the stretch of Denman to Robson and Robson to Jervis to its catchment

area, transforming itself into the West End BIA. To continue incorporating a larger sense of community, this year it is changing the former Davie Day to West End Fest. While only Davie Day from Burrard to Denman will be closed to vehicles on September 8, there are plans to expand the party onto other streets in the future. Bookending the celebration will be two performance stages, one at Burrard and Davie, the other at Denman and Davie. Performers at the Burrard stage include Really Rod, Deep Seated, Dating Myself, Mathew Presidente, QLUTCH Project and Zak Santiago. Drag Queen Joan-E will be providing the entertainment at the Friends for Life bingo. The Denman stage at English Bay will be emceed by Ryan Steele. Entertainment includes My!Gay!Husband!, Nina Mendoza, Michael Fraser and Ronnie Mejia. It’s not just the music that will be playing. Activities will be clustered in different zones. There’s a family zone, artist gallery, Urban Rec dodge ball tournament and charity ball run, in addition to more than 75 street vendors. Restaurants along the street will be making sure people have enough sustenance to last them through the day. West End Fest is on September 8 from noon till 7. For details go to WestEndBIA.com.

A historic day on Davie Street In 1971, Davie Street was the site of the first demonstration for rights by the Gay Alliance for Equity. The first gay pride event was held the next year and has since become one of the city’s biggest summer events, with tens of thousands of people lining Davie to cheer on the parade participants. In recognition of this proud role in the city’s history, the Vancouver Heritage Foundation is recognizing the three blocks of Davie from Burrard to Jervis as a “Place That Matters”. Sam Myhoob, the chef at Laziza, shares his method of cooking couscous. Doug Shanks photo
Perfect couscous every time By Martha Perkins
I
f I was a food purist and wanted to have couscous for dinner, I would soak the dry couscous in water and then steam it. But I think I’ll save being a purist for retirement. Right now quick and easy saves the work day. Until my husband and I went to Laziza restaurant on Davie, I’d been cooking couscous by boiling two cups of water with a tablespoon of butter and adding one cup of couscous, turning the heat to a minimum and stirring constantly. It tasted okay, but.... I blamed its stickiness on the fact I didn’t use the steam method.
Then, one night at Laziza, when my husband was waxing poetic about their couscous, which is not only moist and light but presented in the shape of a pyramid, the chef came out and gave me some advice that has transformed my couscous into something more apropos of restaurant quality. Bring two cups of salted water almost to a boil (I still add the butter) and then add an equal measure of couscous. Give it a stir, turn off the heat and put a lid on it. Ten minutes later take off the lid, fluff it up and it’s perfect. Now if only I could figure out a way to make the pyramid...

Have you ever tried hemp milk?
WellnessBriefs
I
Olivia Newton-John gets the spa treatment
f you’re looking for a creamy, rich and delicious drink, filled with protein and healthy fats, look no further. Hemp milk may be your tasty answer. Hemp seeds contain all eight of the essential amino acids, making it a pretty great protein source. Just half a cup of hemp seeds offers 44 grams of protein (that’s 11 grams of protein per ounce) and 640 calories. Another amazing fact about this glorious seed is

that it is perfectly balanced in essential fats. Humans need both omega-6 and omega-3 fats in order to function at our best. The ideal ratio is thought to be between 1:1 and 1:4 (that’s omega-3: omega-6). Hemp just happens to offer up a 1:2 ratio of such essential fats. Essential fatty acids, or EFAs, are substances that control the formation of blood clots. Not all EFA’s are created equal however. Omega-3 fats are very good at preventLisa Virtue ing blood clotting, as they are anti-inflammatory, while omega-6 fats offer little protection, and actually encourage platelet aggregation, raising the risk for heart disease and stroke. Not only do omega-3s lower the risk of heart attacks, they also lower bad cholesterol levels, inhibit cancer, protect against diabetes, maintain muscle mass, heighten mood and attention span, improve the immune system, and increase energy. The list
goes on from here too! And what about omega-6 you ask? Well, if you are eating too much, you will suffer the opposite of the above effects. And I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t want that… We do need omega-6 however, as this type of fat offers structure within our cells. If we got too much omega-3 our blood could actually become too thin. This doesn’t usually happen in this day and age though, since grains are high in omega-6, as are conventional meats and farmed fish. Therefore, it’s good to be mindful of foods that offer a balance of both fats. Thanks be to hemp!! Did you know that hemp has been cultivated by humans since 4000 B.C., and was perhaps one of mankind’s earliest crops? At one time, monks in Europe were required to eat hemp three meals a day, in the form of soup, gruel or porridge. Another benefit to hemp seeds, is that they blend up very well without any need to strain. I suggest soaking them overnight to get rid of digestive inhibitors, and also to help reduce the bitter flavor that some varieties of hemp have. Put a little cinnamon and stevia, or a touch of raw honey in your homemade hemp-milk, and sip yourself happy. Thor can’t find the words to praise this movie
MOVIE REVIEW THE WORDS Starring Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Irons Directed by Brian Klugman & Lee Sternthal Bradley Cooper is best known for roles requiring sexy cool smoothness coupled with comic relief. The actor flexes his dramatic muscles in The Words and, although his performance is commendable, he can’t quite keep the film afloat. Cooper maintains his suave style in the multi-layered drama as struggling writer Rory Jansen, who finally achieves literary success after flat out copying a manuscript he found in an antique shop. Sure enough, he is confronted by a nameless elderly man (Irons) who claims to be the original author of the novel; Jansen must now pay the price for stealing another man’s work.
The simple approach to the plot works effectively until the other storylines are introduced. A series of flashbacks to 1940s Paris reveal the backstory of the old man (played by Ben Barnes) in needlessly intricate fashion. In addition, a third narrative element is introduced with Dennis Quaid as another author performing a public reading of his novel, which is seemingly about the movie’s initial plot line — having trouble keeping up? A handful of strong actors are wasted with one-dimensional characters and a heavy-handThor ed script which squanders the collective talents Diakow of the cast; it’s especially disappointing to watch the veteran Irons do his best with the shoddy material. The Words plays out like a bad TV movie as the intriguing story and setup become enshrouded in messy dialogue and vapid scenes. Bradley Cooper shows he’s more than a wise-cracking pretty face here; it’s too bad his character has nowhere to go.

James Barber’s legacy
Lose your hang-ups. FREQUENT COARSE & SEXUAL LANGUAGE, SEXUALLY SUGGESTIVE SCENES
James Barber once wrote, “We buy cookbooks in moments of passion. We want them to bring pleasure and give pleasure, along with joy and happiness and most usually, togetherness. On Sept. 23 from noon to 5pm you can share the late Vancouver author’s passion for cooking and cookbooks when his substantial library of cookbooks is offered in an informal ‘trunk sale’ at Barbara-Jo’s Books to Cooks. As evidenced by his TV programs, columns and books, Barber brought fun and curiosity to all things culinary and his cookbook collection reflects this eclectic taste. Free Will Astrology By Rob Brezsny • Week of September 6 ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19): Life tests you all the time. Sometimes its prods and queries are hard and weird; they come at you with nonstop intensity. On other occasions the riddles and lessons are pretty fun and friendly, and provide you with lots of slack to figure them out. In all cases, life’s tests offer you the chance to grow smarter, both in your head and heart. They challenge you to stretch your capacities and invite you to reduce your suffering. Right now, oddly enough, you have some choice in what kinds of tests you’d prefer. Just keep in mind that the more interesting they are, the bigger the rewards are likely to be. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20): According to the religion of ancient Egypt, Tefnut is the goddess of moisture. In the natural world, she rules rain, dew, mist, humidity, and condensation. For humans, she is the source of tears, spit, sweat, phlegm, and the wetness produced by sex. In accordance with the astrological omens, I nominate her to be your tutelary spirit in the coming week. I suspect you will thrive by cultivating a fluidic sensibility. You will learn exactly what you need to learn by paying special attention to everything that exudes and spills and flows. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20): I’m guessing that you don’t know the name of the person who sent the first email. It was Ray Tomlinson, and he did it in 1971. You’re probably also unaware that he originated the use of the @ symbol as a key part of email addresses. Now I’d like to address your own inner Ray Tomlinson, Gemini: the part of you that has done valuable work hardly anyone knows about; the part of you that has created good stuff without getting much credit or appreciation. I celebrate that unsung hero, and I hope you will make a special effort to do the same in the coming week. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22): Busy editor Katie Hintz-Zambrano was asked in an interview what she does when she’s not working at her demanding job. She said she likes to gets together with her “article club,” which is like a book club, except it’s for people who don’t have time to read anything longer than articles. I would approve of you seeking out short-cut pleasures like that in the next few weeks, Cancerian. It’s one of those phases in your astrological cycle when you have a poetic license to skip a few steps, avoid some of the boring details, and take leaps of faith that allow you to bypass complicated hassles. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22): Imagine you’re living in 1880. You’re done with work for the day, and are at home enjoying some alone-time leisure activities. What might those be? By the light of your oil lamp, you could read a book, sing songs, compose a letter with pen and paper, or write in your diary. Now transfer your imaginative attention to your actual living space in 2012. It might have a smart phone, tablet, laptop, TV, DVD player, and game console. You’ve got access to thousands of videos, movies, songs, social media, websites, and networked games. Aren’t you glad you live today instead of 1880? On the other hand, having so many choices can result in you wasting a lot of time with stimuli that don’t fully engage you. Make this the week you see what it’s like to use your leisure time for only the highest-quality, most interesting and worthwhile stuff. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22): I’ll bet that a-ha! experiences will arrive at a faster rate than you’ve seen in a long time. Breakthroughs and brain-
! Y R R HU
storms will be your specialty. Surprises and serendipitous adventures should be your delight. The only factor that might possibly obstruct the flow would be if you clung too tightly to your expectations or believed too fiercely in your old theories about how the world works. I’ve got an idea about how to ensure the best possible outcome. Several times every day, say something like the following: “I love to get my curiosity spiked, my hair mussed, my awe struck, my goose bumps roused, my dogmas exploded, and my mind blown.” LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22): “Disappointments should be cremated, not embalmed,” said the aphorist Henry S. Haskins. That’s good advice for you right now, Libra. It’s an auspicious moment for you to set fire to your defeats, letdowns, and discouragements — and let them burn into piles of ashes. I mean all of them, stretching back for years, not simply the recent ones. There’s no need to treat them like precious treasures you have an obligation to lug with you into the future. The time is right for you to deepen your mastery of the art of liberation. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21): Columnist Sydney J. Harris told the following story. “I walked with a friend to the newsstand the other night, and he bought a paper, thanking the owner politely. The owner, however, did not even acknowledge it. ‘A sullen fellow, isn’t he?’ I commented as we walked away. ‘Oh, he’s that way every night,’ shrugged my friend. ‘Then why do you continue being so polite to him?’ I asked. And my friend replied, ‘Why should I let him determine how “ I’m going to act?’” I hope you’ll adopt that approach in the coming week, Scorpio. Be your best self even if no one appreciates it or responds. Astrologically speaking, this is prime time to anchor yourself in your highest integrity. “
tried with only partial success to provide you with insights that would allow you to graduate to the next level of romantic understanding. That’s the bad news, Aquarius. The good news is that all this could change in the coming months. I foresee a breakthrough in your relationship with intimacy. I predict benevolent jolts and healing shocks that will allow you to learn at least some of the openhearted truths that have eluded you all this time. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20): A mother wrote to the “Car Talk” columnists to ask whether it’s possible to cook food on a car engine. She wanted to be able to bring her teenage son piping hot burritos when she picked him up from school. The experts replied that yes, this is a fine idea. They said there’s even a book about how to do it, Manifold Destiny: The One! The Only! Guide to Cooking on Your Car Engine! I suggest you engage in this kind of creative thinking during the coming week, Pisces. Consider innovations that might seem a bit eccentric. Imagine how you might use familiar things in unexpected ways. Expand your sense of how to coordinate two seemingly unrelated activities. HOMEWORK: What are you more than ready for? What change have you prepared yourself to embrace? What lesson are you ripe to master? Write: Freewillastrology.com
A PLEASURE TO BE SAVOURED.” FASCINATING AND INTOXICATING!”
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21): In the 1960 Olympics at Rome, Ethiopian runner Abebe Bikila was barefoot as he won a gold medal in the marathon race. Four years later, at the summer games in Tokyo, he won a gold medal again, this time while wearing shoes. I’m guessing this theme might apply to you and your life in the coming weeks. You have the potential to score another victory in a situation where you have triumphed in the past. And I think it’s even more likely to happen if you vary some fundamental detail, as Bikila did. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19): Wikipedia has extensive lists of the biggest unsolved problems in medicine, computer science, philosophy, and nine other fields. Each article treats those riddles with utmost respect and interest, regarding them not as subjects to be avoided but rather embraced. I love this perspective, and urge you to apply it to your own life. This would be an excellent time, astrologically speaking, to draw up a master list of your biggest unsolved problems. Have fun. Activate your wild mind. Make it into a game. I bet that doing so will attract a flood of useful information that’ll help you get closer to solving those problems. (Here’s Wikipedia’s big list: tinyurl.com/ListofProblems.) AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18): There’s a certain lesson in love that you have been studying and studying and studying — and yet have never quite mastered. Several different teachers have

Clarisky business Engineer with a passion for fashion turns heads with custom creations By Kelsey Klassen

ou’re not a model, you’re not even a designer on the program — you’re simply in the audience at Vancouver Fashion Week and all the photographers are looking at you, wanting to know where you got that outfit. “I made it myself,” is not the answer they’re expecting. The other surprise is that Clarissa Gallaccio had only been designing and sewing her Clarisky creations for few months when she stopped the show at VFW. Now she gets invited to fashion events around the world to write about them for her blog, ClariskyBusiness.com. How the civil engineering technologist can fit it all in with her full-time job designing artificial turf fields is a testament to her love of fashion. “I thought a blog would be a great way to get my stuff out there, but it’s so much time and work. You have to attend the events, write about it, take pictures and edit the photos. And I always want to wear something that I made, so five hours before I go to an event I’m trying to sew something new. It’s a lot of late nights, but you’ve got to work hard to get anything out of it.” It started when a couple girlfriends got tied up on weekends as servers. Gallaccio worked opposite hours, so she bought a sewing machine and, on Friday nights, started sewing away to fill the time. With the demand for her designs growing, she now turns her samples over to a professional seamstress when it comes time to produce them for retail. The dresses, sold at Jennyfleur Loves boutique in Yaletown for $100 - $200, are feminine and flirty, and intended to be worn by a variety of women who enjoy their outfits “a little classy and a little risky.” Custom creations are also available through her website. While many get their style inspiration from fashion events and magazines, Gallaccio says she

is inspired by the desire to be different. “As soon as I see something’s been done, I get kind of disappointed and rethink the idea. If it’s out there, I want to make sure that I thought of the idea myself, first.” For example, when the mullet skirt peaked this summer, her take was the segmented Cascade dress. Another favourite is the Go With The Flow-y (pictured), which continues to be one of her most requested pieces and is so versatile it’s even a hit with bridesmaids. “It’s stuff that I want,” the petite brunette continues. “If a lot of people are wearing a trend, I try to think of a way to improve it or take it one step further.” • Her must-have accessory: Pearl Earrings • Her Fall forecast: Jewel tones • Her favourite place to find unique fabric at a good price: Value Village She’ll be covering Fashion’s Night Out this Thursday for The Social Life magazine. Look for her conducting interviews at the FNO Alberni Street location. but, Victor, let me suggest that you clamp your lips on the tailpipe of a car and take a good huff of that secondhand smoke! We all breathe secondhand smoke; maybe its it’s time we started to make a fuss about all the automobiles with one driver. I can avoid a cigarette smoker because they are not in the elevator with me, they are not in the street with me and I can zip around them with my bicycle. But as I bike down the streets of Vancouver I am breathing secondhand smoke whether I like it or not because we are a petroleum-based economy. Until we change that we will have secondhand smoke and it won’t becoming from a few tobacco people; it’ll be from the drivers who don’t get the message to go green and maybe buy an electric car. et in 1959 France, the witty and poignant Heroes follows the attempts of three geriatric former soldiers as they plot to break out of their retirement home. Presented by the FOG Theatre, Tom Stoppard’s razor-sharp, Olivier award-winning comedy runs Sept. 6 to 30 at The PAL Theatre in Coal Harbour (581 Cardero). Directed by Terence Kelly, the saucy work is a tour-de-force for senior FOG theatre artists John Innes, William Samples, and Michael Dobbin as a trio of hilarious, cantankerous WWI veterans in 1959 France who quietly reflect on their long lives and boisterously plan their escape. Each of the characters carries a heavy burden from the war: Gustave suffers from crippling agoraphobia; Henri possesses a gammy leg; and Philippe is prone to blacking out due to shrapnel lodged in his brain. The play is a translation of Gerald Sibleyras’ Le Vent des Peupliers (The Wind in the Poplars). Academy award-winning and critically acclaimed writer Tom Stoppard (Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead, Shakespeare in Love) worked closely with Sibleyras in 2005 to translate the work into English. Following its debut in London’s West End, his adaptation received the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award for ‘Best New Comedy’. The four actors have worked with and performed for an impressive list of companies including The Stratford Shakespeare Festival, The Shaw Festival, The Vancouver Playhouse and The Round House Theatre in London, England. Their work has also been featured extensively on film and television, including Battlestar Galactica, Smallville, MacGyver, Happy Gilmour, and The L Word, among many others. The three actors are all residents of and met through the Performing Arts Lodge (PAL) in Coal Harbour. PAL provides a safe, affordable home for a community of creative professionals who work or have worked in the performing arts. Tickets from $25 at brownpapertickets.com. — Kelsey Klassen

Looking bad, WE Re: “Looking good, ladies,” Aug. 23 WE Vancouver. Here is another example of poor journalism and another reminder of the increasing pressure that women face to conform to society’s expectations to look a certain way. Need I remind the writer that women do not exist purely to be judged on their looks or the clothes that they wear? If it weren’t for society’s constant pressure on women to conform to a certain “ideal,” perhaps young women wouldn’t be so concerned with trying to impress Canucks jersey-wearing Vancouver men and, instead, could focus on issues that actually matter to our community.
