◆ COVER STORY
‘Year Zero’ begins at new ADSS Anticipation infectious as students, teachers look forward to starting school
‘They’ve all been blown away after coming into the school. It’s got a completely different feel to it than the old one.’
WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News
It’s been two years since the new $58 million Alberni District Secondary School broke ground on Roger Street and the final project is finally done. There’s still some work to finish but on Sept. 10 staff and an estimated 1,100 students will pour through the doors of the new 12,150-square-metre school for their first day of classes. And teachers — all of them grinning at their new surroundings the day the News toured — have been organizing their classrooms, putting their special touch on them. The day will be as big for them as it will be for students, ADSS principal Mike Ruttan said. “They’ve all been blown away after coming into the school. It’s got a completely different feel to it than the old one,” Ruttan said. “Teachers say that it’s logical, spacious, high and that the amount of light changes their moods.” New school means new infrastructure, which will take time to get used to, Ruttan said. “Yes we have a new building but now we have to make the phones, computers, SMART boards, the PA system all work,” he said. “They’re very sophisticated and until we use them we don’t know what they’re capable of.” Students’ grades and attendance may see a jump this year as a result of the new building, he said. Students have been filing in and out of the new school to see their counsellors about timetables for the upcoming term and to get a peek at their new digs. This is year one of firsts at ADSS: the first class of Grade 12s to graduate from the new facility; as well as for the first class of Grade 9s who will spend four years there. Grade 12 student Rhea Lauzon lists physics and chemistry as her favourite courses, and she hopes to study computer sciences at BCIT after she graduates. Lauzon is one of a group of students who helped

others schedule appointments to see counsellors at the new school in the week preceding the first day. She watched with anticipation as the new school took shape
from bare ground. “I wondered if it would be finished on time for our graduating class and it was, so I was happy about that,” Lauzon said. Lauzon, had a sneak peek at
the new school two weeks before opening day as part of her job. “We were told that it was small but it’s actually quite big. It feels modern and is definitely a step up from the old school,”
she said. “I’m lucky though. I already know my way around.” Lauzon’s favourite parts of the new school are the round skylight in the centre of the building and the second floor classroom facing 10th Avenue and Roger Street. “I like the colour, the glass and the amount of light.” Lauzon says as a Grade 12 student she doesn’t feel cheated out of having only one year at the school. “I kind of wish I was in Grade 9 again so I could have all those years ahead of me here,” Lauzon said. “But our graduating class is giving the school a name so we should really make the most out of this one year.” Grade 9 student Brett Watts is one of those lucky Grade 9 students who has the next four years ahead of him at a new school. Watts, 14, got an advance look inside the school and was taken aback on the tour. “It’s like playing a video game out for the first time, experiencing all the different parts of it,” Watts said. “Our upgrade will be when we move up to Grade 10. This is going to be fun.” Watts visited the old high school a few times and never liked it, he said. “It had a rundown feel to it. The configuration was like a maze inside. A bunch of squares connected by rectangles with twists and turns,” Watts said. “The new school is more logically built and you can find your way around easier.” Standing five-foot-eight, Watts is as tall as big kids but says he’ll still be a bit nervous about going to high school. Woman dies in ATV crash Tamu Miles Black Press
A Port Alberni woman is dead and a man seriously injured following an ATV accident in the west end of the Cowichan Valley last week.
Lake Cowichan RCMP were called out to the scene of a fatal ATV accident on Ditidaht territory at approximately 10 p.m. on Aug. 27. Cpl. Krista Hobday says the Malachan First Nations
Volunteer Fire Department was first on the scene, followed shortly by B.C. Ambulance attendants. There were two individuals involved in the accident, the driver of the ATV, a 52-year-old male from Nitinat Lake, and a 45-year-old female passenger from Port Alberni. The female was pronounced dead at the scene. The B.C. Coroners’ office has not released the name of the deceased. The driver was taken to a hospital in Port Alberni, and then transferred to Victoria General Hospital with serious injuries. “The driver is in serious condition, but he’s hanging on,” said Hobday on Aug. 31. When police arrived at the scene, the female was trapped under the ATV,
and police noticed evidence to suggest a second person was involved. “The officers couldn’t find him,” said Hobday. “They had to call in a dog to locate the second occupant.” A collision analyst was called in from South Island Traffic to determine the cause of the accident, but Hobday says that the individuals were travelling down a steep, paved hill with a hairpin, right-hand turn at the bottom. “No cause has yet been determined, but there are possible charges pending, depending on the outcome of the investigation,” said Hobday. It has not yet been determined if alcohol was a factor in the incident. Police were on the scene until approximately 2 a.m. — With files from Susan Quinn, Alberni Valley News

the former AW Neill student said. “I don’t know if that makes sense but it’s how I feel.” Students will be streaming in and out of the school, which is all but completed. The playing field, half gym and atrium flooring will be finished at month’s end, School District 70 Secretary Treasurer Jerry Linning said. And the theatre will be finished in November. Construction won’t affect study time. “Any area that needs work which is occupied by students will be done on weekends or in the afternoon,” he said. As well, not having the theatre until late fall won’t affect assemblies, which will be held in the gym, Linning said. Being the principal at the new high school is the culmination of Ruttan’s 37 years in the education field. This is year zero, a new start at a new high school and it won’t happen again, Ruttan said. “We’ve got just one chance to get this right and we can’t afford to lose it. “I’m not saying we can’t change. But to get this kind of opportunity so dramatically comes once.”

And we’ve set our sights even higher this year by expanding our collection routes and reaching out to additional community partners,” said Andrew Rolfson, BCTFD executive director. Local BCTFD volunteers will be delivering donation
bags to residential addresses in Port Alberni during the second week of September. Those who receive a bag and wish to donate should simply fill it with nonperishable food items and leave it on their front step before 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15. The bags will be picked up that day and delivered to a local donation centre. “We anticipate having more than 6,000 volunteers throughout the province this year,” says Rolfson.
“We know many people wish to help, whether by volunteering or donating food. We welcome all who wish to participate, and hope we’ll be able to surpass last year’s results.” Established in 2009 as a local effort to serve those in need of food bank services in Burnaby, B.C., the BC Thanksgiving Food Drive has now expanded to include dozens of partner organizations and food banks serving some 50 communities throughout the province.

Safe roadways up to drivers Columnist separates oil from manure Some B.C. drivers won’t take a break from cellphone technology while operating a motor vehicle despite overwhelming evidence that distracted driving is the third leading cause of fatal crashes on the province’s roadways behind speeding and impaired driving. So ICBC and police are revving up a month-long campaign targeting people who talk or text on their mobile device while behind the wheel. It’s a worthy endeavour and perhaps a $167 fine will convince drivers of the foolishness of their actions. But police resources are limited compared to the number of drivers who figure the chances of getting caught are miniscule and answer their phone or make a call or text. Responsibility for making the roads safer cannot fall solely on police. The public must take the privilege of driving seriously. Operating a motor vehicle is one of the most complicated tasks one does in a day. Manoeuvring two tonnes of metal, glass and rubber at high speeds, surrounded by others doing the same is not easy. It only takes a second of inattention for disaster to strike. And inattention falls far beyond texting and talking on a cellphone. While perhaps not against the law, distracted driving includes eating and drinking, riding with a pet on your lap, applying makeup or fumbling to change a CD in the stereo. Thankfully, the majority of drivers understand their responsibility and get themselves to their destination in one piece. For those who don’t get the message, perhaps a hefty fine will make them change their ways. Let’s just hope there’s no loss of life in the meantime. — Nanaimo News Bulletin
TOM FLETCHER B.C. Views
V
ICTORIA – I was as surprised as anyone to hear about the plan by this newspaper’s owner, David Black, to begin regulatory work on an oil refinery for Kitimat. I’ll leave it to others to comment on the practicality of that plan, and whether it would make the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline project more acceptable to B.C.’s government and population. Black Press news coverage, columns, letters to the editor and other reader comments are not affected by this project, and there has been a range of views expressed already. Whatever the merits of the refinery idea, it has advanced the debate over pipelines and the place of oil in our society. And that’s a good thing, because as someone
with a basic knowledge of chemistry and some experience in oil refining, I have noticed a lot of ignorance about the subject. Today I’d like to address some of the main misconceptions, which have been exploited by some opponents. The first one is oil pollution in general and how it gets into the environment. A global study by the Smithsonian Institution in 1995 calculated the amount of oil making its way into oceans this way: Big tanker spills accounted for 37 million gallons a year, about five per cent of the total marine oil pollution identified. By far the largest source was oil runoff from land into drains, from oil changes, municipal and industrial wastes and other sources: 363 million gallons. Bilge cleaning
and other routine ship maintenance added 137 million gallons, four times the tanker spill average. Air pollution from vehicles and industry deposited hydrocarbon particles equal to another 97 million gallons; natural seeps added 62 million gallons; offshore drilling discharges accounted for 15 million gallons. So that’s the first thing to understand. It’s not tankers and pipelines doing most of the polluting. It’s you and me. Then there is the propaganda about greenhouse gas emissions from the oil sands crude. Actor Robert Redford is one of the highest-profile pitchmen for the false notion that “tar sands” oil generates three times the greenhouse gases as conventional oil. The facts are clear. The most widely cited source

is a graph prepared by Cambridge Energy Research Associates, which shows that 75 per cent of greenhouse gases from all types of crude occur when the gasoline, jet fuel and diesel are burned by the end user. Yes, there are variations in emissions on the remaining quarter. Emissions from mined oil sands crude are slightly higher than steam extraction, which is slightly higher than conventionally drilled and pumped crude. The most greenhouse gas-intensive crude used in North America is California heavy crude, which is conventionally drilled. Burning coal produces far more greenhouse gases than oil, as University of Victoria climate scientist Andrew Weaver has calculated. Two U.S. environmental groups, including the one fronted by Redford, have lately been promoting a study that suggests oil sands crude is more corrosive to pipelines. Continued / 9

To the Editor, Re: Society is studying projects to death, BC Views, Aug. 30. It seems that Tom Fletcher considers anyone who opposes pipelines or tankers on this coast, to be part of some questionable segment of society. He also states that “most” of the 4,500 people who had signed up to speak at the Enbridge hearings, did not show up. I know some of them did not proceed with their speeches, but most? I would like to know where he got this information. I attended a hearing in Comox last spring, as well as in August. Both times, all the speeches given were serious, well researched, and well presented. Sheila Leggett, the panel chair, thanked the speakers for their research and earnest concern. The participants came from central Vancouver Island, Quadra Island, Nanaimo, and yours truly from Port Alberni. No Vancouver basement dwellers were in sight. They will perhaps
show up for Vancouver hearings in January, with my friends the lawyer, the therapist, and the award-winning poet. They are following in the footsteps of the leader of a federal party, a former federal environment minister, two emeritus engineering professors at UBC, and several sitting parliamentarians. A recent poll shows that a significant percentage of B.C. conservative voters are also opposed to the pipeline. If we are all just agitators and white trash, I’m happy to belong. Road proposals getting wacky To the Editor, A flood of wacky road proposals, including one supported by the AV News, hit the newspapers during the hot dog days of August. They include a new highway out of town, a roundabout at the junction of River Road with Beaver Creek Road, a ring road which has to cross ravines (say what?), and last, but not least, the only sensible plan—a
completion of the waterfront route from Ship Creek Road to Redford Street. Get on with it, Mayor Douglas and council! Lame duck proposals from various city quacks are getting us nowhere. And, Mr. Mayor, forget about that cosy hug at the UBCM with Blair Lekstrom, the Minister of Transportation. He’s just announced he’s not running in the next election. Boo hoo! Richard Berg, Port Alberni
Comments based on facts To the Editor, Re: Was letter fact or fiction, Letters, Aug. 30. My statement that “as many as 50 per cent of Canadian Indian residential school children never made it home from school” because “they died” is not merely my opinion but a fact gleaned (if memory serves correct) from the fabulously educational CBC documentary series called 8th Fire: Aboriginal Peoples, Canada, and The way Forward. But the best education about
what a frightening, degrading, and humiliating experience Indian residential school was, I received from attending the Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings here in Port Alberni last March and listening to the truth directly from those who experienced it. Further, I read the 2012 Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Interim Report—particularly the section entitled “What People Told the Commission” —wherein it states “The Commission was told of children who died of disease, of children who killed themselves, of mysterious and unexplained deaths.” Not exactly your elite private English boarding school. BC media sinks LIberal ship To the Editor, Finance minister Kevin Falcon resigns and the B.C. media starts the propaganda that he is leaving because the B.C. Liberal government is a sinking ship. They forget to mention that Graham Steele, the
NDP finance minister in Nova Scotia, an icon, resigned in the third year of their mandate. Steele’s saying his departure is driven by personal consideration and an internal clock that chimes for a career change. Bill Estabrook, the NDP Minister of Transportation, a five-term elected candidate also resigns because of advanced Parkinson’s disease. The premier does not blow a gasket, just has a cabinet shuffle and life goes on. Here in B.C., the media is saying that it is time for a change of government because the B.C. Liberals have been in government for 11 years. They don’t mention that it is okay for Alberta keeping the Conservatives in government for 41 years, the NDP in Manitoba for 13 years, the Liberals in Ontario for 10 years, the Liberals in Quebec for nine years, and the Conservatives in Newfoundland and Labrador for nine years. How come it is always okay in other Canadian provinces but never okay in B.C.? Joe Sawchuk, Duncan

Kempton wins Salmon Fest derby ‘I’ve gone on record to say No. 42 is going to happen.’
FESTIVAL: | There will be another, say organizers. SUSAN QUINN Alberni Valley News
Alice Kempton will have a chance to defend her title at another Port Alberni Salmon Festival. Kempton hauled in a 34.2-pound salmon on Saturday that turned out to be the winner in what could have been a bittersweet event. Organizers weren’t sure whether there would be a future for the Salmon Fest. Despite lower angler numbers—around 2,000—chairman Dan Washington said it

I was hoping for 3,000 rather than closer to 2,000 (anglers).” The total fish caught (1,239) was lower than usual, but Washington said that’s the only thing that is

completely out of his hands. “Fishermen on the water did admit it wasn’t as great as they hoped it would be,” he said. Organizers are going to look for a major corporate sponsor again, something that was done in the 1970s, when a tobacco company funded the event, Washington said. “For so many years we’ve been proud there’s no commercial groups down there,” he said, but corporate donations will go a long way to keeping the festival going. “Times are changing and we’ve got to move with them or we won’t survive.”
Alice and Walter Kempton didn’t decide until Friday to enter the 41st Port Alberni Salmon Festival. It was a good decision for the hometowners: Alice bagged the winning fish and $10,000 in prize money that goes with it. “Can you believe I did this,” she asked as she accepted her cheque and the Fred Duncan Memorial trophy. Kempton is not a huge angler, but she has entered the salmon derby on three occasions. She and Walter have spent some time fishing the Alberni Canal over the past few weeks, she said. Continued / 12

BC Transit launches new exchange BC Transit will roll out its new exchange and bus schedule with a customer appreciation day this Friday, Sept. 7. Activities take place from noon to 2 p.m. at the exchange, at Redford Street and 12th Avenue.
BC Transit chief operating officer Mike Davis and Port Alberni mayor John Douglas will hand out cupcakes and BC Transit safety lights, stickers and magnets. In late August, BC Transit introduced a new system in
Port Alberni where all three bus routes meet at the new exchange. The change offers more frequent trips. Two routes—No. 3 River Road and No. 4 Crosstown— are ideal for the fall fair this weekend, Davis noted.

The Alberni District Fall Fair is celebrating the theme “100 years of urban living created by agriculture”, in keeping with Port Alberni’s centennial. But don’t despair: while the theme is new, many of the same popular features will still be on tap beginning Thursday, Sept. 6 and running until Sunday, Sept. 9. The parade starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday and runs down the traditional 10th Avenue route, from Burde Street to the end near the fair grounds. Expect to see some vintage material in there, as well as other decorated floats and
community groups, fair spokesperson Ann Siddall said. New to the fair this year is the agriculture education building, which has taken over the Van Ipren Building where the rabbits used to be housed. The displays will teach fairgoers about farmers feeding families. The weekend farmers’ market will have a large display as well as AV Transition Town, the regional district’s agriculture plan will be exhibited and there will be information on several of the Valley’s small farms. The Alberni Valley Museum will have an exhibit on early farming implements as well as its traditional mystery
artifact. The animal barns, home crafts and midway all return as well. Since Old Ned the bull died, Farmer Bill Thomson will bring some water buffalo for people to get to know. Lance Lapointe and Jason Sampson of Revolution Productions have taken over the entertainment for the fall fair, and Siddall said they’ve done a great job this year. Also new is a freestyle skateboarding demonstration on Friday and Saturday behind the Kin Hut, which Alberni’s youth will appreciate. Reefer needs some actors
Never one to edge away from controversy, Portal Players Dramatic Society is looking for eight actors for its upcoming adults-only production, Reefer Madness: The Musical. The play takes a cheeky look at the hysteria caused by marijuana in the 1930s. Auditions take place Monday, Sept. 10 and Wednesday, Sept. 12 at the Capitol Theatre (4904 Argyle St.) at 6:30 p.m. The production also needs a choreographer. Please call producer Megan Cathers at 778-4214203 if you fit the bill.
Youth arts registration
Enroll your child in one of the Stages Youth Theatre programs at the Capitol Theatre (4904 Argyle St.) on Tuesday, Sept. 11 and Wednesday, Sept. 12 from 2–6 p.m. each day. TOTEM: | Pole makes trek to new high school. WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News
The weathered totem that once stood outside in the courtyard at the old Alberni District Secondary School on Burde Street got a touch-up by its original carver just in time for the opening of the new high school on Roger Street. The five-metre tall western red cedar totem was weathered from the elements and was taken down from the old school’s inner courtyard more than a year ago, Nuuchah-nulth carver Pat Amos said. “There was a lot of wear and tear, especially on the southwest side from the wind and rain,” Amos said. “Taking it down and bringing it inside gave it a chance to dry so I could work on it properly.” Amos carved the pole 17 years ago, taking over from his father Tim Paul, who was originally commissioned to do the work but became bogged down in other projects. “Hughie Sam, Edgar

School District 70 teacher Ryan Dvorak, left, and ADSS vice principal Ron Behnke stand before the refurbished First Nations pole now erected in the new high school. The pole was located in the courtyard of the old ADSS on Burde Street and was refurbished by Nuu-chah-nulth carver Pat Amos.
Lawson and the late Wilfred Robinson helped me carve the first one,” Amos said. ADSS graduate Natasha Cook helped Amos do some of the painting, he said. The pole depicts a Tsix-watin, or eagle on the top which represents strength and power. And a Kakawin, or killer whale rests below it, representing ruling over the sea.
“It also represents that our ancestors hunted whales,” Amos said. A new dorsal fin had to be carved to replace the old one, which loosened from kids hanging off it. The pole also had to be
lightly sanded down to provide a smooth base for a new coat of paint, Amos said. In addition to a new fin and paint, ovoids have been placed in the teeth and copper pieces throughout the pole, Amos said.
Amos did most of the work on the pole at the new high school and finished just as the old building was closed. The pole will stand in the atrium at the Roger Street facility and a proper
unveiling will be done at a grand opening later, Amos said. The school district has talked about adding other poles in the future, he added.

Don McGowan won a modified Stableford event at Alberni Golf Course last Sunday, Sept. 2. Other winners, in order, were Gary Korven, Vic Carlton, Gordon Cutting, Kevin Carlton, Wolf Suhr, and Jerry Swaney. Closest to the pin winners were Jacques Giovetti on No. 2, Bob Price on No. 13 and Preban Rasmussen on No. 17. Gerry Fagan collected $15 for winning the charity closest to the pin on No. 4. Next Sunday, Sept. 9 will see what the club captain is calling The Odd Couple Tournament. The format will be twoman teams: pick your own partner and use one score card per team. Use the score of the first name on the card on the odd numbered holes and the second name on the even numbered holes. Use one score per hole, net and gross. Shotgun start at 8 a.m.

Spencer Rhodes, left, and younger brother Carson are the 2012 junior club champions at Alberni Golf Club. Elizabeth Hill is the junior girls’ champ.
Janice Cross took the monthly medal with her low net score of 68 in Alberni Golf Course ladies’ action last week. Cross came in with the blistering low gross score of 81, she took the challenge pin and last but not least, she came in first in the ball sweep—
choosing various pars doing a nine-hole count and selecting her best holes. Linda Christian came in second to also win a new ball. Not to be intimidated by Cross’s huge success, challenger Patsy Gauthier will put her game to the test for the challenge pin next week. Tee times for next week will be a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Please note this new time: golf
will be followed by a meeting in the ladies’ lounge, and all division members are respectfully asked to attend. Nine-Hole Division A Division — Low gross was taken by Marta Williamson. Lois Robinson’s great game gave her the low net position. Pennie Churchill had a steady hand and a sharp eye to take the least putts. B Division — Low gross in this division
was a three-way tie between Audrey Pemberton, Louise Berlinski and Pat Dahlquist. Berlinski also scooped the low net, placing with Pemberton having the lowest putts. Bea Stuyt chipped in on No. 9 with Churchill and Dahlquist parring No. 5. Pars were also recorded by LaDonna Knutson on No. 3, Pemberton on No. 4 and Williamson on No. 2.
Brotherly act Holcombe shoots eye-opening 40 wins junior titles DEB HAGGARD Hollies Ladies
Two brothers have claimed the 2012 junior club champion titles at Alberni Golf Club. Spencer Rhodes won the overall low gross with a couple of very good rounds on Sunday and Monday. His younger brother Carson won the overall low net in a thrilling three-person
playoff. The 2012 Junior Program lessons and tourney section have come to an end for the year as school starts. “We are extremely proud of our 2012 junior boys and girls this year and look forward to 2013,” said organizer and associate club pro Brian Rands.
3756 10th Ave 250.723-6212
This is my favourite time of the year for golfing. The air is dry so the ball sails through the sky. When it finally lands, the ground is hard so the ball rolls forever. I feel like my driving is almost LPGA–calibre. Wednesday saw another group of women attending ladies night at Hollies Golf Course. The longest putt was won
by Sharanne Gaiga. Closest to the pin on hole No. 3 was won by LaDonna Knudson and by Mary Ann McConnell on hole No. 6. Lee Anne Van Lent took home the longest drive of the night. I am happy that my golf mates had a great night. But the night belonged to Rhonda Holcombe. She shot a stunning round of golf with a score of 40. Thank you to Donna Cox for donating a beautiful flower arrangement as a
door prize, which Sandy Toombs won. Sue Steinhaeur and Mary Ann McConnell are still leading the Shoppers Drug Mart ringer board competition with scores of 28 each. The season is getting close to ending and I have a feeling that the rest of us won’t have a chance to catch those scores. The yearend ladies 18-hole club championship will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29. Please register by Sept. 16. Spots are limited.

I know that it is only September and no one likes to hear that dreaded “C” word (Christmas). But if Santa is listening, I really need a new driver and/or a new putter. My daughter’s hand-me-downs have more than served their purpose. I am confident that if Santa was so obliged, my score would really improve and that next year it could be my name at the top of the ringer board. Don’t forget that it is a 5:30 p.m. start on Wednesdays at Hollies. Only a couple of more weeks before the end of the golf season to win that deuce pot, now standing at $225.

Third time lucky for Moore’s ace Hollies Golf
Mark Moore, along with his brother Darren joined the Hollies earlier in the year and golf almost non-stop on weekends. This past holiday was no different except for one odd incident. Mark came in during the afternoon to cool off with a beverage, explaining how he had twice hit the pin with his tee shots on holes No. 6 and No. 8 earlier in the day. Unfortunately, neither shot fell in the hole for that first hole in one. Then, as if guided by some divine hand, Mark went out for one
30 to take the Fairway Market low gross during last week’s men’s night. His score was two better than Ken Moore. There was a three-way tie for the Duncan Sabine Collyer Partners low net. In the countback to determine the winner, Richard Allen defeated Robin Woodward with honorable mention to Bob Veenkamp. The deuce pot was not won so it will be worth $150 on hole No. 8 and $60 on No. 3 next week. Joining Debolt were Shane Bortoletto, Ron Lange, Ron Nelson, Dale Clark, and Brian Mitchell in the K.P. winnings. Ken Moore still leads the Howard Johnson ringerboard

and the season has gone by in a literal blur of time. It’s hard to believe that the year end club championship is only weeks away, during Ryder Cup week Saturday, Sept. 29. Already a quarter of the field is in and paid for in this one-of-akind event. Remember, it is the first 40 men and women for the 18-hole finale along with lunch and dinner.

with a slim one-shot margin over Ron Lange, Barry Ensor, and Denis Debolt. Debolt meanwhile has a lead in the Remax player of the year which may end up being unbeatable, unless someone steps up to the plate.
