Do homework: improve literacy to improve life
By Mel Newcombe September is Life Literacy Month in Canada and Sept. 8 is International Literacy Day. The United Nations theme this year is “Literacy and Peace.” This theme was adopted to show how higher literacy skills and values bring everyone together. Literacy gives us the skills we need to understand the world around us and participate in our communities. Let’s all celebrate literacy this September. Literacy is one of the most important life skills we all use everyday. So what is literacy? Cariboo Chilcotin Partners for Literacy Society (CCPL) defines literacy “as how people understand and use information. It is how they read, write and use numbers and communication technology, such as computers, phone, fax, e-mail and the Internet.” So why should you improve your literacy skills? Increasing your literacy skills will help you retain your job and increase your employment goals by being prepared for the ever-changing job market. With higher literacy skills, you will be better able to take care of your family, money and have more opportunities. What is the difference for those who have low literacy skills? CCPL defines low literacy “as people not having the literacy skills they need to do these daily tasks. They have trouble with reading, writing and using numbers.” CCPL supports programs from babies to seniors throughout the Cariboo. Its programs include Partner Assisted Learning, Computer

DRIVE ONE FOR YOUR COMMUNITY is an amazing NON-fundraiser FUNDRAISER brought to you exclusively by Sunrise FORD and CrimeStoppers! This event will give us up to $6000 if YOU show up to test drive a new market-changing FORD vehicle. NO ONE WILL SELL YOU and NO ONE WILL CALL YOU LATER. This is about getting money for CrimeStoppers and we need your help as one of the 300 drivers that will
help earn the $20 for each 5 minute test drive necessary to earn the total available $6000 that FORD of Canada and Sunrise FORD are trying to give away! ON SEPT. 8TH show up between 9:30am to 4:30pm at the SAVE-ON-FOODS parking lot and give us the few minutes it takes to make this great community fundraiser successful.

prior to its arrival, safety equipment and oars were stored at his home at 108 Mile and would have to be transported down to the training site on Watson Lake four or five times each week for rowing sessions. “We had no secure place to leave it all there, so we trailered it back and forth – unloading and reloading — you get the picture. Jenkins says the next club event is the North Shore High School Championship in mid-October where their junior rowers will compete.

You can improve your literacy skills each and every day by taking some simple steps to improve your skills. Read a book, take up a hobby, play games with your family and friends, join a club, take a class and try to make learning a daily activity. Take up a challenge with yourself to improve your reading, writing and math skills. Make it fun. As your literacy skills improve, your life will improve, too. If you would like more information

All that remains of Jeff and Britany Embree’s Gateway home is charred rubble. The family lost everything and Tamara Giles is seeking public support to help her brother and niece get a new start.
Support needed Ken Alexander Free Press
Jeff and Britany Embree lost everything they owned when their home burned to the ground in the early morning hours of Sept. 2. Jeff’s sister, Tamara Giles, says her brother and niece were away from the home when the fire occurred, and their two cats and a dog managed to escape through the dog door. Giles adds the fire was discovered by a passer-by around 1:30 a.m. and called 9-1-1, which garnered a response by the 100 Mile House RCMP, the forest Grove Volunteer Fire Department and 100 Mile House Fire-Rescue. She notes the RCMP was first on the scene and she was told it’s believed the fire started in the kitchen area because that was the part of the building that was burning. She adds the building was completely destroyed and was informed it would be impossible to determine the cause. Jeff and the animals are staying at his parents’ home in the 108 and Britany, who
graduates from PSO this year, is staying with a friend. Giles says they have received clothing from area thrift stores, and businesses and members of the public have offered furniture and household goods. However, they could really use a place to store it, she adds. Meanwhile, Giles has set up a PayPal account (e-mail giles4@live.ca) for anyone who would like to donate some money to the family, and says she is looking into starting a trust fund at one of the local financial institutions. For more information contact Giles at 250-459-2090.

Canim Lake hosts adventure race By Tish Diamond Twenty-nine participants competed in the 10th Annual Poker Face Adventure Race recently. Participants came from Williams Lake, Kamloops and there were a lot of local Canim Lake and 100 Mile House residents. We also had tons of volunteers from Canim Lake and 100 Mile House who helped make the race run smoothly. The race involved a 12-kilometre bike ride starting at Eliza Archie Memorial School, going through the main subdivision, up the mountain towards Bobbs Lake and ended with a thrilling descent back down towards the school. Then they continued on with a four-km paddle on Bridge Creek, which resulted with a few paddlers ending up in the water. The last leg of the race involved a gruelling eight-km run up the mountain and back down to the finish line. In the iron man division, Dennis Wick defended his title, once again for the 10th consecutive year, with a total time of 1:32:35. Steve Law was second with a time of 1:40:09, and Dustin Price took third place at 1:41:48. Not far behind was Dwayne Chamberlain at 1:47:01, and Adam Courtney finished in 2:03:09. Kristie Iverson was the soul iron woman completing all three components in a time of 2:25:35. Jack and Donna Fitzel (For Better or Worse) took first place in the team-of-two category with a time of 1:44:40. Second place went to Cam and Colleen Robb (Cariboo Eco Tours) at 2:06:43. Close on their tails were Brent Dixon and Marcia Gilbert (The Speedy Cousins) who finished in 2:11:03.
The team-of-threeor-four category was won by Shawn Melville, Kam Taylor and Margie Lobsiger (Focused Fitness) with a time of 1:47:28. Second place went to the Kamloops team of Harry Spahan, Jennifer Morrison and Lynn Morrison (Foot Loose) at 2:23:05. David Sumption, Beverly Sell, Brett Archie and Michelle Archie (Red Neck Nobels) were very close
behind in 2:25:50. This year, there was an eight-km walk/run race and it was very successful. Andrea Flett took first place with a time of 34:31. Kathryn Barrick was second at 41:50, followed closely by Ashley Watson at 41:54 and Claire Ford in 42 minutes flat. Heidi Hagan crossed the finish line in 48:42 and Tiffany Keating was one second behind her at 48:43.

Williams Lake and District Credit Union held its ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the larger and newly renovated 100 Mile House branch Aug. 22.

Renovations add warm country feel Williams Lake and District Credit Union, 100 Mile’s branch is bright, open, airy and very inviting. Local manager Shawna Norton says they are proud of the facility. “It is really nice we are settling in and getting things put away.” The renovations were started in February by Spruce Lee Construction Ltd. of Williams Lake and Primal Electric from 100 Mile did the electrical work. The project was completed in July, and the official ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Aug. 22. The interior incorporates pine beetle wood, warm earth-
tone paint. It features a large western sepia tone print of a silhouetted Cariboo cowboy by 100 Mile House photographer Peter Castonguay. It is hung in a frame made by local artist Guy Hildebrandt and adds to the cozy atmosphere in the members’ waiting area. Norton explains it has been 12 years since there were any major renovations done and taking over the previous dental office has added much-needed space. The facility has more office space, storage, fireproof file storage and a meeting/boardroom. With the renovations came the addition of a receptionist and reception Volunteers Warmly Wel comed Call 250-39 5-2900
