UVic students create genderneutral washrooms Brittany Lee News staff
Walking into the former men’s washroom in the Student Union Building at the University of Victoria, two partitions separate three bathroom stalls from the urinals. Two formerly gendered washrooms in the SUB have opened as multi-stall gender inclusive facilities, allowing men, women, and transgendered people to share the same space. “We’re doing this in order to create safe spaces for everyone, because everyone deserves to go to the washroom without fear of harassment or discrimination,” said Emily Rogers, chairperson of the UVic Students’ Society.
The washrooms, which opened a as gender inclusive space Aug. 29, now have a picture of a toilet on the door rather than a symbol of a male or female. UVic is the first campus on the Island to adopt the multi-stall concept. The washrooms are for everybody’s use, Rogers said, noting they also creates a safe and accessible space for families and caretakers. Rogers hopes the initiative, originally started by UVic Pride about two years ago, will be the start of a larger social movement. “It’s one step to combatting institutionalized transphobia and gender-based discrimination,” she said. “And we hope this will be a symptom of a larger social change and conception of how people view gender and view public spaces.” The initiative will act as a catalyst for education, Ariel Tseng, director of finance and operations of the UVSS, added.

“These washrooms are not just a great space but it’s a really good opportunity for people to learn more and take a moment to think about why these washrooms are gender inclusive.” The washrooms, estimated to cost $5,000, are not only an accomplishment for UVic but for the greater community, according to Dylyn Wilkinson, representative from UVic Pride. Wilkinson said he’s been harassed in gendered washrooms because of the way he looks and often only felt safe using single stall, or handicap, washrooms. “What people can learn from this is ultimately everyone needs a safe place to pee. That’s really all anyone wants to do, is to be able to do their business without fear of their safety,” he said. Feedback from students has been positive so far, however, there has been some shock. “There are some confused looks at first but people are generally pretty supportive once they realize what’s up,” Rogers said. While the society does not have current plans to include more multi-stall facilities on campus, it has been a conversation they’ve had with the university. “We’d love to see the university follow suit,” Rogers said. editor@vicnews.com

Invasion of the fire ants the thin, red ants have been found in Chilliwack, North Vancouver and Burnaby. “It is to the best of our knowledge localized right now to perhaps half a dozen residences (in Greater Victoria),” Higgins said. “The province has approved funding to map their distribution in more detail. … By the end of summer we hope to have a better idea of where it is, at least where it’s established.” A retired biologist, van Drimmelen looks forward to Higgins’ mapping the species and discovering a safe way to combat them. Traditional antkilling methods have yet to work. “I’m hoping there’s a way to control these ants without killing the other nice ants,” van Dimmelen said. So far Higgins finds boric acid at a very specific concentration does the trick and is guiding residents accordingly. “We’re going to be setting up a process, so we can provide some information to municipalities if they become the first contact for these issues,” Higgins said. “They’re nasty, biting little invasives. – Ben van Drimmelen
Christine van Reeuwyk Reporting
Aggressive red ant colonizing Greater Victoria Within seconds, Ben van Drimmelen’s hand is swarming with European fire ants. All it took was one solid thump over where he knew there was a nest – an easy process since he pounded his entire front yard earlier and found five nests in a one-metre section. “The odd behaviour is the strong bite and the swarming action,” the Oak Bay man said, ants crawling across his calloused hand. “They’re nasty, biting, little invasives.” He’s been trying to get rid of them since discovering the pests living alongside the harmless black ants in his yard in the mid-1990s. “I didn’t know they were non-native,” he said. “I knew they were annoying.” This summer, van Drimmelen learned exactly how invasive the pests are after reading media coverage of a European fire ant problem on the Lower Mainland that cited leading B.C. expert Robert Higgins. Higgins hopes to spread that knowledge given new funding from the province and the growing concern over the tiny, feisty pests. “One of the many challenges with this new invasive is that few people work with ants and are able to identify them. Right now I am the only person in the province, but a workshop is in the planning stages to train more people,” the entomologist explained. “We’re

Although only four millimetres long, the ants are known to swarm and sting without provocation, putting the kibosh on bocce, relaxing on the grass and backyard parties, said van Drimmelen’s neighbour Rhea Cavelti. “Once the kids are bitten, After Bite doesn’t work. … The
(welts) get massive,” Cavelti said. Higgins explained that the European fire ants became a noted pest about 15 years ago. “(The species is) forming much denser colonies in areas that it’s moving into. And it’s becoming much more aggressive,” he said. “This ant doesn’t behave this way in Europe. It doesn’t form colonies anywhere near as densely as in North America. … They seem to understand they are dominating the area and can afford to be aggressive.” Along with Greater Victoria,
■ The European fire ant is not a morning creature. In the cold and damp it’s sluggish but as the temperature heats up, say to 20 degrees, it begins to move faster. They show the most aggressive behaviour on warm humid muggy evenings. ■ A queen is required to establish new European red ant colonies, so unknowingly transporting drones or workers on clothing isn’t a danger to spreading the species. ■ Entomologist Robert Higgins says people with fire ants shouldn’t transport soil. BCGEU strike not likely the last Tom Fletcher Black Press
Provincial government employees staged their largest one-day strike so far Wednesday to press for a bigger wage increase, with two thirds of the workforce off the job at ministry offices, liquor stores and ICBC offices province-wide. Both the government and the B.C. Government and Services Employees' Union remained unwilling to budge from their positions after negotiations broke down over wage increases this spring. The union executive is meeting next week to consider further strike action this fall. Two earlier one-day strikes targeted liquor warehouses and then selected resource ministry offices in the B.C. Interior. Government negotiators offered raises of two and 1.5 per cent for the next two years, then withdrew the offer after the union staged the first strike. BCGEU chief negotiator David Vipond said the wage offer has been tabled and withdrawn three times since talks began early this year, a tactic he called "peeka-boo bargaining." And after three years without a wage increase, he said the union is sticking to its demand for 3.5 per cent in the first year and a cost-of-living raise of about 2.5 per cent in year two. "They want us to reduce our real income over this contract, and we've already taken a five-per-cent hit," Vipond said. "So to try and chisel us again with a skinny deal doesn't make sense to us." Premier Christy Clark unveiled her new cabinet lineup in Victoria Wednesday as BCGEU pickets circled government offices downtown. Both Clark and Mike de Jong, the new finance minister, said they have no intention of increasing the burden on taxpayers to provide bigger raises to provincial workers. "The government's position on this hasn't changed," Clark said. "I am not going back to taxpayers for more money in order to give government workers a raise. We are in very tough economic times and we have to balance our budget." The government estimates that the wage offer adds up to $1,700 more over two years for a BCGEU employee making $48,000 a year. editor@vicnews.com

Insurance for the seasonal traveller. The season is turning, the sun is lower in the sky and leaves are showing their fall colours. It’s the time of year when people are finalizing their plans for lengthy trips to scenic U.S. destinations to escape the Canadian winter. While considering destinations, accommodations, transportation and activities for long stays, travellers are no-doubt researching travel insurance too. The cost of medical care in the U.S. can be pricey, and a single misadventure could spell the end of a much anticipated trip. The Canadian government recommends that travellers purchase travel insurance when leaving the country. Medical care outside of Canada is extremely expensive and provincial health care may not cover all of your medical expenses incurred out of the province. When researching travel insurance, there are three important things for people to consider: What is your health status? Depending upon your age, some policies might require you to complete a health questionnaire. This needs to be answered accurately to ensure you have the correct coverage. If necessary, purchase preexisting condition coverage so that you’re covered in the event you have a claim relating to a pre-existing condition. What is your trip duration? For some, one lengthy trip of 30 to 90 days may be all

that is planned. However, if you are planning multiple trips, it may be more economical to purchase an annual multi-trip plan. Do you require Trip Cancellation or Interruption coverage? Of course, it is disappointing to have to cancel a trip for any reason, from a missed connection to an unexpected illness. Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption Insurance ensures that you won’t suffer the financial burdens typically associated with such events. But note that there is a difference between the two coverages: Trip Cancellation insures you if your travel plans are cancelled prior to departure, while Trip Interruption coverage insures you if your trip is disrupted after it has already begun. Deer advocates and antagonists are being given one last chance to weigh in on how to deal with the frequently sighted animal in city limits. The deer management citizens advisory group submitted its final report to the Capital Regional District last week, with recommendations ranging from sharpshooters on rural properties to subsidized fencing for farmers. “The (advisory group) strongly believes there is clear and convincing evidence that deer in the CRD and that deerhuman conflicts are on the rise,” the report states. The report also calls on municipal and provincial governments to create stronger partnerships with First Nations groups to expand deer harvests, improve crop protection for regional farmers and establish a public education program for all accepted recommendations. On Wednesday, the CRD’s planning, transportation and protective services committee examined the report. Directors will now evaluate the general recommendations as well as those tailored to agricultural, rural and urban areas before creating an implementation plan. Vic Derman, Saanich councillor and vicechair of the committee overseeing deer management, cautioned the recommendations are not set in stone and still need to undergo scrutiny. “We’re a steering committee for the board, and we’ll ultimately be making the recommendation to the board,” Derman said. “Later this month, there will be a full meeting dedicated to (public) input,” he added. The public input meeting takes place Sept. 19 at 1:30 p.m. at the CRD, 625 Fisgard St. Provincial numbers put the Vancouver Island deer population between 45,000 and 65,000. There is no estimate for the Capital Region. dpalmer@vicnews.com

Pickets go up at UVic Kyle Slavin News staff
Students returning to classes at the University of Victoria this week were greeted by picketing employees. But the two unions currently undertaking job action say the students won’t be impacted by the strike until Sept. 17 at the earliest. “What would (the strike) look like from the week of the 17th on if the employer is not back at the bargaining table? The unions will have to start impacting buildings and services that would have an impact on students,” said Doug Sprenger, president of CUPE 951. “We really hope to avoid this, and we call on the employer to come back to the bargaining table.” Wednesday (Sept. 5) was the first day CUPEs 917 and 951 took job action. The two unions represent some 1,500 non-teaching jobs such as tradespeople, food service staff, childcare workers, and office and library staff, and have both been without contracts since March 31, 2010. The first pickets went up outside the Saunders building on campus at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Members of 917 picketed on the first day, while 951 members didn’t picket, but the union instituted an overtime ban and work-to-rule. Sprenger said there are no plans for a full strike throughout September, but said the unions won’t be sharing any information about when and where their job action will take place.

“We have to keep the employer guessing as to where and when the picket line will go up,” he said. At issue for the unions is job security and inflation protection, Sprenger said. “We’re very disappointed that after two years of collective bargaining not one issue of substance has been signed off. We feel that with the impending budget cuts, we have no other alternative than to take strike action to achieve our goal of a fair and reasonable settlement,” he said. The university, in a press release on Sept. 4, expressed “disappointment” that the unions were poised to take job action. “While the two locals have spent the summer putting themselves in a legal position to take job action, they have yet to respond with a counter offer to the university’s settlement offer made nearly two and a half months ago,” UVic’s statement read. “We are disappointed,” Kane Kilbey, UVic’s associate vice-president of human resources, said in a release. “We have had a long history of good labour relations and we are proud of the fact that we have only experienced one four-hour strike in the history of the university.” In late August, the unions and UVic went before the Labour Relations Board to negotiate essential service levels. kslavin@saanichnews. com

OUR VIEW
Inclusive johns push boundaries That the University of Victoria Students’ Society transformed two washrooms into gender inclusive facilities in the Student Union Building, may seem an odd step, but it is a welcome one. The goal of the two gender inclusive washrooms – one with a bunch of stalls, the other with stalls and urinals – is to create a safe space for people of all sexual orientations and genders, including the transgendered. People shouldn’t fear entering a public washroom out of fear of not looking “male” or “female” enough, and possibly being ridiculed. This kind of idealistic inclusiveness is perfect for locales such as the UVic student union building, a place that should push the boundaries of society, culture and gender norms. But a gender neutral washroom that is a multistall facility is less likely to have success outside the campus, or even the SUB. It will likely be hard for some men and women to overcome discomfort of the other gender wandering into what has been a singlesex bastion for generations. At the risk of generalizing, many women complain of how men are messy and have poor aim when it comes to the toilet. And for now, the gender neutral washroom is more a statement than a practical solution to people uncomfortable in traditional singlesex washrooms. If a student is in the medical sciences building or the MacLaurin music wing, it’s unlikely he or she would hoof it across campus to make use of the new facility. When UVic moves past its labour issues, it may want to explore the notion of more gender neutral spaces on campus. Universities are places where boundaries are tested; places where the envelope is pushed – and not just by the student union. Student society rep Emily Rogers said she hopes the gender inclusive washroom will, “be a symptom of a larger social change and conception of how people view gender.” If that’s the goal, then kudos to the UVSS. But real change will only be made by widespread support of the initiative by students and faculty.

LETTERS ICBC situation boggles reader’s mind Wow, the CEO of the Insurance Corporation of B.C. has 23 vice-presidents to help him manage his 5,000 employee empire. Even U.S. President Barack Obama runs a country of approximately 312 million people with only one vicepresident. After the audit of ICBC and its scathing review, the CEO of ICBC tendered his resignation and indicated he would leave by November of this year. He is, however, willing to remain on as a consultant and collect his full salary and bonuses of approximately $485,500 until June 2013. Considering the mess ICBC seems to be in, why do we need any more of his consulting assistance? It is also very difficult to comprehend that it is going to take up to two years to eliminate 200 positions from this B.C. corporation seemingly bloated with upper management. Martin Battle Victoria
Rationale still unclear for liquor privatization Re: B.C. liquor laws finally effective (B.C. Views, Aug. 15) One thing that Tom Fletcher and other media have failed to do is fully inform the public about the financial case for privatizing the warehousing and distribution branch of the Liquor Control Branch. Minister of Energy and Mines Rich Coleman and the B.C. Liberals have certainly not been called to proper account on this issue. Forget about the union angle; this ‘monopoly’ provides B.C.’s coffers with a hefty income. Why do the Liberals, our ‘free enterprise’ party, want to sell off this asset? Even B.C.’s craft beer industry folks have questioned this proposal and they are the small business people who help create employment. Who will benefit from such a sale? Friends and insiders? I look forward to an in-depth
article on this issue, soon, in one of Mr. Fletcher’s columns. Pat McGuire Victoria
Torture cartoon is no laughing matter I write this in regards to a cartoon on your editorial page regarding torture: I have yet to decide what is more disturbing the fact that our government, under the leadership of a Christian family man, thinks that torture is OK, or that this subject is somehow humorous. Is this the kind of country we want to live in and be proud of? Is this the kind of country where new immigrants, some escaping this type of treatment in their home country, will want to immigrate? It’s truly time to give ourselves a collective shake, and think about just where this path leads. Bob Mabee Saanich
Cyclist licensing would enhance safety Re: Is it time to licence cyclists? (Letters, Aug. 29) When I moved to Victoria from Hamilton in 1983, I was very surprised that I did not have to purchase a licence for my bike. As a child in Hamilton, I had to purchase my own licence, which at the time was only 50 cents for a child under the age of 12. After the age of 12, the cost increased. Likewise for those over the age of 16. As a former journalist, I wanted to do some research on this and called the Hamilton Police Department. The officer said that they no longer licence bicycles, but thought that it would be a good idea to reinstate them. On Aug. 28, I was driving west on Walnut Street in Victoria when all of a sudden, a girl of about 14 or 15 came barrelling through from Oregon Avenue right in front of me. She didn’t look either way, nor was she wearing a helmet. She had an earplug in her ear, (probably listening to music, which should be
another no-no for bicycle riders), so probably didn’t even hear my car at the intersection. I slammed on my brakes, missing her by only a few inches, yet she didn’t turn around or even act like she heard me and carried on towards Bay Street. If that girl had a licence on the back of her bike, I would have been able to get her number and would have gladly reported her to the police. Imagine the parents realizing that their lovely daughter was inches away from perhaps a permanent injury, or even death. That girl will probably never know that she was almost hit. It’s a good thing that I am familiar with that corner and am always careful and looking all around. There is also a playground on that corner and one never knows when a small child is going to run out to chase a ball. Please licence all bicycles. That way we can report folks with no helmets, close calls and traffic violators. Audrey Scammell Victoria

Victoria city council approved the development of a non-profit affordable housing building Friday, a venture that could become more common as housing prices continue to rise. The 68-unit, four storey building will replace the aging Friendly Inn Motel buildings at 35-39 Gorge Rd. E. and will consist of studios, one-to-three bedroom units and five townhouses. The Greater Victoria Housing Society and Greater Victoria Rental Development Society, both non-profits, presented a joint application to city hall to build the structure. “Right now, we’re targeting $675 rent for the studios,” said Kaye Melliship, executive director at Greater Victoria Housing Society. “We may do better than that, and it really will depend on our mortgage when it opens in 2014,” she said. Three-bedroom units could rent for a maximum amount of $1,475. “For the new building, there will be a maximum (annual) income of about $65,000 as a household to qualify,” she added. The housing society will also assume management of the building when it is completed. A similar 52-unit building opened in March at 21 Gorge Rd. E. and has early signs of success, Melliship said. Coun. Marianne Alto praised the joint venture between the two non-profits. “Both of these organizations are hugely committed to creating greater affordable housing opportunities,” Alto said. “To have them come together like this ... and present a well-designed project is something that should be applauded.” Melliship said rental prices have cooled off in recent months, a trend that will inevitably turn around again before the building is completed. dpalmer@vicnews.com CONTESTS CONTES TS PR PRODU ODUCTS CTS STORE STORES S FLY FLYERS ERS DEALS DEALS COUPO COUPONS NS BROCHU BRO CHURES RES CATAL CATALOGU OGUES ES CON CONTES TESTS TS PR PRODU ODUCTS CTS ST STORE ORES S FLYERS FLY ERS DE DEALS ALS CO COUPO UPONS NS BRO BROCHU CHURES RES CATAL CATALOGU OGUES ES

No shortage of long weekend drunk drivers Kyle Slavin News staff
A tourist from France was one of 11 impaired drivers Victoria police nabbed behind the wheel throughout the Labour Day long weekend. This brings the total number of individuals charged with impaired driving by VicPD since the Victoria Day long weekend (May 21) to 126. The eleven incidents over the Labour Day weekend included 10 90-day roadside prohibitions to drunk drivers, and one driver found to be impaired by drugs. Two drivers, a 32-year-old Victoria man and a 17-year-old Saanich woman, were issued IRPs for incidents that occurred Friday morning. Three drivers received IRPs early Saturday morning, including a 35-year-old woman from France. Police issued four IRPs to drivers early Sunday morning, including one to a 27-year-old Langford woman who hit a taxi and fled. And a 39-year-old Saanich man received an IRP early Monday morning, after he was found passed out in his car at Mayfair Shopping Centre, after hitting a road sign on a centre median earlier in the morning. A 20-year-old Colwood man was found to be impaired by drugs after being pulled over near Queens and Vancouver streets. An undisclosed amount of marijuana and a digital scale were seized. kslavin@saanichnews.com

Bear spray threat used in Victoria armed robbery
Kyle Slavin News staff
A thief used a large can of bear spray as a weapon to steal cellphones and electronic tablets from a Rogers Plus store Sunday evening. The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. at the store located in the 2600-block of Quadra St. The man entered, brandishing the bear spray, and ordered two employees into the back room to open a safe. The suspect emptied out the safe of electronic merchandise, then emptied the cash register of its money.
He fled in an older model white, four-door sedan car. The suspect is described as a white man, in his late 30s to early 40s, and approximately 5’8 tall. He was wearing a green Tilley-style hat, dark sunglasses, a green sweater and jeans. The bear spray was not discharged, and neither of the employees were physically injured during the robbery. Police are asking anyone with information on this crime to contact detectives at 250-995-7444, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. kslavin@saanichnews.com

Region needs help fighting knotweed Homeowners asked to be diligent in preventing spread of invasive species Kyle Wells News staff
It’s a quiet invasion but the Capital Regional District wants homeowners to be diligent in identifying and properly disposing of the invasive species knotweed. The bamboo-like plant – in particular the Japanese, bohemian and giant varieties – is causing problems for waterways and other species of plants. The plant, originally from Asia, is edible and has some medicinal properties. But it is listed by many countries as one of the worst invasive species. In B.C., knotweed is considered a priority for eradication. “It’s a real vigorous one,” said Colwood parks manager Gordon Beauvillier, who is a member of the Captial Region Invasive Species Partnership (CRISP). Last year, CRD parks workers tackled a patch on the Galloping Goose trail near Colwood Corners that had spread to a six- to nine-metre square patch. The biggest problems, said Beauvillier, are when residents grow the invasive species as an ornamental plant or simply don’t remove it properly. “The stock and everything is very bamboo looking, it comes out with a nice, white flower,” Beauvillier said. “Once you know what it is, it’s hard to confuse it with other things.” The plant has hollow stems that can grow three to five metres tall. The leaves are heartshaped and come to a pointed tip. In late summer, the plant flowers in small white clusters. Despite its good looks, however, knotweed can cause serious problems. “It absolutely takes over waterway ecosystems,” Beauvillier said. “It will destroy waterways, which will destroy the wildlife and the fish habitat. It’ll clog waterways. It’s really bad. And it grows. It’s a vigorous grower and it’s extremely hard to get rid of.” Disposal is at the heart of the problem. Knotweed is a tough
plant. Beauvillier said there have been cases of the plants growing in landfills and it has also been known to grow through asphalt and concrete foundations. For now, knotweed has mainly been kept to patches on private properties. Some property owners are tackling the plant on their own, but Beauvillier said the Coastal Invasive Plant
Committee, in partnership with CRISP, can help with infestations and disposal. Knotweed needs to be disposed of properly or else it will grow back and spread. “It’s the lack of information out there for people and the understanding of how bad it actually is that is really giving us a tough time,” Beauvillier said. To report knotweed, call CRISP at 250-8572472. For more information on the plant, visit www.coastalinvasiveplants.com. editor@vicnews.com

Community rallies around toddler with rare cancer Charla Huber News staff
Charmaine Partington’s heart sank when she heard about a young Langford girl with cancer. Three-year-old Hannah Day is being treated for Stage 4 rhabdomyosarcoma at B.C. Children’s Hospital. Even though Partington has never met Hannah or her family, the young girl’s story hit close to home. “I thought ‘what if this happened to my kid?’” said Partington, whose daughter Alicia is close in age to Hannah. “It’s hard to hand over money you don’t have, but since I’ve had Alicia I’ve seen how important community is.” After thinking about the sick tot, Partington decided she had to do something for the family. Both of Hannah’s parents have stopped working to be at their daughter’s bedside. At first Partington headed to the kitchen and baked some cookies with two-and-a-half-year-old Alicia. The next day, Partington sold the cookies at her work and collected $34 for the family. Still wanting to do more, Partington decided to organize a garage sale. It seemed fitting since she first heard of Hannah’s struggle through Facebook page “Victoria moms swap and shop,” a group of parents selling
children’s used items. “I was sure each one of us have a bag of items we can donate,” Partington said. Gordon United Church donated the space for the fundraiser and Partington has been collecting children’s items such as clothing, toys, books, bedding and maternity items to sell. Hearing about a sick toddler is one thing, but when Partington heard about the family’s history, she had to spring into action. Hannah and her family fell victim to a fire at Day’s Welding and Fabricating on Dunford Avenue, Jan. 2, 2011. Not only did the family lose its business but they lived in a suite in the building. The family lost everything. Hannah was admitted to the B.C. Children’s hospital Aug. 2. She also has a younger sister who is being cared for by other family members. Donations for the garage sale benefiting the Day family are still being collected and can be arranged through Partington via email at believeit17@gmail.com. The garage sale is Saturday (Sept. 8), from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Gordon United Church, 935 Goldstream Ave. All items will be sold by donation and all funds will be passed on to Day’s family. charla@goldstreamgazette.com

Victoria welcomes classic art at street level First chalk art festival touches ground Edward Hill News staff
It’s a medium that is fleeting but delivers high art at street level. Chalk art lives at the mercy of the wind and rain and shoes. Most people who have strolled the old section of Government Street have seen this art from the talented hand of Ian Morris, who most often sketches recreations of the Renaissance masters – haunting images of Raphael, Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci. Where the work of Morris occupies small sidewalk spaces, the first Victoria International Chalk Art Festival will bring a full-blown exposition to Government Street next weekend. Five artists, including Morris, will have two days to create 8 x 10 foot masterpieces on Government, which will be closed between Fort and Yates streets. Tracy Lee Stum, the premier 3D chalk artist in the world, will start Sept. 12 in the lower level of the Bay Centre on a 20 x 20 foot creation. For Morris, this is the first time in his nine years as a chalk art-
ist that he’ll meet his peers from around North America. “From the start I hoped something like this would happen eventually. I’m proud to bring this art form to Victoria and proud it’s got to this level,” Morris said. “I’m eager to meet others of my tribe.” The 44-year-old artist admits he started street art as a means to pay the bills. Now he’s embraced the centuries-old tradition of the Madonnari – Italian folk artists focused on drawing images of the biblical Madonna on sidewalks. Morris focuses on Renaissance reproductions, but is also developing “3D” art – images that appear eerily three dimensional when viewed at a specific angle through a camera lens. “I enjoy the classical reproductions a lot. There’s power in them – grace, beauty, history,” Morris says. “But I got tired of people asking me about 3D (chalk art), so I decided to up my game. They’re a lot of fun, but it’s like learning to draw all over.” Morris sees his art as part of a larger tapestry of encouraging a vibrant downtown core and cre-
ating compelling public spaces grounded in art and culture. “My real imperative is community. (My art) is a tool to make this a community where people want to be,” Morris says. “There’s more to city life than shopping and working – or there ought to be.” This philosophy meshes with the goals of John Vickers, creator of the chalk art festival, and the international busker festival, which completed its second season this summer. “This is part of a bigger picture. Years back I was looking to create three international festivals for the downtown,” says Vickers, noting that he’s looking at a kite festival for the third festival event. “I’m a passionate supporter of downtown. This is about creating free entry, family-friendly festivals in the downtown.” Vickers, known for his pumpkin art, had the inspiration for a chalk art festival after seeing Morris’ work, and then travelling to Sarasota, Fla., to see North America’s largest chalk art festival, organized by Denise Kowal. It’s Kowal’s connections that allowed Vickers to draw top talent to an untested, first-time festival in Victoria.
Edward Hill/News staff
Government Street chalk art fixture Ian Morris helped inspire Victoria’s first chalk art festival, starting next week.
“It’s an opportunity to get a considerable number of people down there. An overwhelming number of merchants support this. It’s a boon to business,” Vickers said. “We’ve got to promote the downtown and give it more of a sense of community. We have to keep the downtown relevant.” “(Vickers) is on the same page as me. To make the downtown a human community you need life, and bringing festivals is a way to do that,” Morris agreed. Over the years, Morris has become an expert on creating art on sidewalks – he says the brick on Government street sidewalks is ideal for for chalk art. The pebbled road surface might be tougher. “The road is different. It’s like silk to sandpaper,” he says, shrugging. “You just do what you can.” Tracy Lee Stum will begin her chalk art drawing at the Bay Centre on Wednesday, Sept. 12. The other artists will create their pieces on Government Street on Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 15 and 16). The event is rain or shine (artists will have tents in the event of rain). Artlandia raises its game for Rifflandia festival Daniel Palmer News staff
Joey MacDonald kneads his rainbow-stained hands methodically through a seafoam blue paint batch, carefully removing the remaining lumps from his latest concoction. He stands in a second-floor loft space on Fisgard Street, where he and his colleagues operate the Olio Collective, a space that spawns much of the visual art for the Rifflandia festival. “Rifflandia has been around for five years and they’ve always had some kind of art component,” MacDonald said. “Artlandia is that art component.” Stacks of unique prints and plastic paint jars cover the room’s only table, an organized chaos that hints at last-minute preparations for Artlandia’s grand opening, Sept. 7 at 517 Pandora St. “This last year we pitched Rifflandia with a bunch of ideas for art installations that were very visual, very interactive and that incorporated local artists,” MacDonald said. The Live!Stock poster show, where 15 artists create unique screenprint posters for 15 Rifflandia performers, is one of three exhibits that will be revealed today at the Rifflandia headquarters. The second display, Headspace, allows onlookers the chance to be a part of the piece by placing their faces into the artwork. It was a huge hit at last year’s festival. Lastly, the R&A Line is a 1/4-scale five-car train. Each car is assigned to different artists to create a completely unique interactive art installation, including a car by Scott Smith that plays music and reacts to movement. “Based on how you move, you’ll be able to manipulate the music itself and visually see how it impacts the EQ (equalization),” MacDonald said. After Friday’s grand opening, the train and Headspace exhibits will be shown at Royal Athletic Park for the duration of Rifflandia, Sept. 13 to 16. White canes a welcome gift Daniel Palmer News staff
Ann Jackson tears up as she recalls meeting dozens of partially sighted and blind children for the first time at the CNIB holiday celebration last December. “It made me very happy that I was there and our club was able to help,” she said. Since she started losing her vision 12 years ago, Jackson has become an aggressive advocate for the blind as president of the Victoria White Cane Society, a non-profit support group for people dealing with vision impairment. The society, which celebrates its 66th anniversary this month, recently partnered with the CNIB’s Victoria office to provide canes to schoolaged children, an expense not covered by provincial health plans. “Most of the children that we see have some vision, but many of the children need assistance,” said Mary Kay Kennedy, CNIB orientation and mobility specialist. One of the key mobility tools for children is a cane, Kennedy said, used by children as young as two-and-a-half. “A cane is designed to grow with your size. So, as the children get taller, the cane gets taller,” she said. Vision can also change as a child gets older, making it necessary to purchase different types of mobility canes along the way. Kennedy is one of three specialists who pro-

A former Saanich cop is the first Victoria Police Civic Service Award recipient. Michael Drescher, 59, earned the VicPD honour after nabbing a suspected purse snatcher Aug. 30 in Cook Street Village. Drescher, who now works for LifeLabs, said instinct took over when he came across the suspect running toward him on the sidewalk. Drescher took him to the ground in the 1100block of Cook St. Victoria police arrested the suspect who they call a “prolific offender.” “We don’t ask much of our citizens but when they step up and act like this – when they see a crime in progress and do something to take the offender in custody – to keep people safe, we can’t ask any more than that,” said VicPD Chief Jamie Graham. “I was in the right place at the right time and I hope that any capable person in that situation would do the same thing,” Drescher said. “I love Victoria and what happened was out of the ordinary but instinct took over.” editor@vicnews.com

Victoria a contender to land Ironman Canada Victoria ideal to host race with 3.8-km swim,180-km bike, and 42-km run Travis Paterson News staff
Elk Lake is a leading candidate to be the new home of Ironman Canada. The only problem is, Greater Victoria needs someone to rally the community in a hurry if it’s going to happen. The World Triathlon Corporation, which owns the Ironman brand, has openly expressed interest in relocating to southern Vancouver Island after its recent divorce from a 30-year marriage with Penticton. “The beautiful thing about Victoria, there is a communication pipeline, as an existing race (Subaru Western Triathlon Series) has done half the work, if not more than half the work,” Steve Meckfessel, managing director of global race operations for the WTC, said from Tampa. Fla. There are millions of reasons Victoria should want the race, as wherever it lands, it brings millions of dollars of economic impact. But there are plenty of challenges to be met and questions to be answered if Victoria is to be considered as the new permanent home, beginning in August 2013. The WTC has posted a Sept. 24 deadline for proposals, and is hoping to announce its selection by Oct. 10. “It all has to happen quickly, we were only approached by Ironman last week,” said Hugh MacDonald of SportHost Victoria. MacDonald has a rich history of bringing major events to Victoria including the Americas Rugby Championship next month and the 2013 Ford World Men’s Curling Cham-

But even he will need an energetic response from the community to make this happen. “The early deadline will be hard to meet, as it’s now (SportHost’s) job to check with the triathlon community to see if there’s enough will,” MacDonald said. “Before SportHost can endorse this as a good idea, we need to do the due diligence to see what’s required.” One expert says the impact on the local economy could reach $100 million within 10
Think outside the diamond Victoria Baseball Club names head coach and co-coach Travis Paterson News staff
The Victoria Baseball Club has named its head coach, and it’s a “them” not a “him.” Dennis Rogers and Bob Miller will share the duties as the head and co-head coaches, respectively, for the soon-to-benamed West Coast League baseball franchise. Boston-raised Rogers has managed minor league teams in the Pittsburgh Pirates and Oakland Athletics associations, including Oakland’s single-A affiliate Vancouver Canadians in 2003 and 2004. He’s currently head of the Riverside Community College baseball team in California, which he helped build from the ground up. Miller is a well seasoned college coach and has coached Cuesta College in California the past nine seasons. “I wanted to have someone to bounce ideas off of and Miller can handle it all – pitchers, infielders and outfielders,” Rogers said. “And I want to think outside of the box, if and when we can.”
years. But there are also questions around why the event was no longer welcome in Penticton, which opted for the Germanbased Challenge Family for 2013. The latter organization is a rival to the WTC, and will offer a triathlon called Challenge Penticton that uses the same distances. “The race developed over many years, and was great for Penticton, but it must mean something’s not right,” MacDonald said. Reports out of Penticton mention little
of the monetary controversy, however, and more to do with a convoluted fallout between Penticton, previous Ironman Canada organizer Graham Fraser and WTC, which bought up the world’s Ironman licences. Assuming Ironman in Victoria would draw its annual minimum of 2,500 athletes, the event should be celebrated, says Lance Watson, co-organizer of the Subaru Western Triathlon Series. “Victoria would be an awesome choice. It’s a triathlon hub of North America. Hosting it at Elk Lake is very doable, but it’s going to require a tremendous amount of political will.” Watson, who is known for coaching Simon Whitfield to gold at the 2000 Olympics, has been at the helm of the half-Ironman triathlon at Elk Lake that takes place every June. He knows what it takes to get Saanich and the surrounding municipalities on board. Saanich Mayor Frank Leonard is receptive to the idea, but is wary of municipal costs up front. “We like to be involved at the start of these things,” Leonard said. “If we’re in early and at the front end, it can be affordable.” What’s needed in Greater Victoria is someone to champion the Ironnman cause and align all the municipalities with Saanich at the heart of it, Meckfessel said. Central and North Saanich would also be key districts affected by the expansive bike and run loops. Victoria, View Royal, Highlands and Sidney are also on the potential bike loop, especially if it runs in one lap of 180 kilometres, though it can be split in half, while the run can be broken into thirds, or even quarters. “Ironman Europe in Frankfurt (Germany) is a four lap run, it sells out every year and it’s the European championship,” Meckfessel said. “We can make it work.” sports@vicnews.com

hey started off reporting about Tour de Rock, and now journalists Kyle Slavin and Erin Glazier are part of the story. Slavin’s journey from writing stories about the Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock to being part of it started in a high school gymnasium. At Reynolds secondary school to cover the event for the Saanich News last year, Slavin watched as 115 shaved “Raising money heads and a giant cheque more than $80,000 for kids with cancer for greeted Tour riders has a much bigger alongside ear-splitting cheers. The event moved reward than just the 25-year-old reporter crossing the finish so much he made an important decision that line.” day. – Erin Glazier, “There was not a dry CTV News eye in the gym. It was the most electric feeling being a part of something so monumental,” he said. “I told the school principal then and there I want to be a part of the team.” One year and 3,000 kilometres later, he is one of two media riders months into gruelling three-day-a-week training sessions for Tour de Rock, where motivation comes in the form of cancer survivors like seven-year-old Daisy Irwin. “(Daisy) has gone through a hell that no baby or child should ever go through. Kyle Slavin and Erin Glazier are ready to roll for Tour de Rock respect her immensely for what she has gone through and what she has overcome,” Slavin said. “My whole reasoning behind wanting to do the tour is being on the side of cancer everyone fights for – the optimism, the hope, the getting into remission.” Seven years later, Irwin is in remission after being diagnosed with two forms of leukemia as an infant and given a five per cent chance at survival. It is a reminder why the pediatric cancer research is so important to Slavin and Glazier. Glazier described her choice to join the team as a “no-brainer” after seeing her colleagues experience the life-changing ride. “Riding a bike becomes a menial task when
you look at the big picture and see how much you are helping (cancer patients) have a normal life,” said Glazier, a CTV reporter based in Victoria. “When you are going up a hill and hurting it is nothing compared to what those kids go through when they go through the treatment. That is a big motivator for us.” With only weeks to go, the 28-year-old Glazier is excited to meet the families and volunteers along the way as she makes the gruelling trip from Port Alice to Victoria over the two-week, 1,000-kilometre bike ride, Sept. 23 to Oct. 5. “The best is yet to come. Raising money for kids with cancer has a much bigger reward then just crossing the finish line,” Glazier said.

Shannon the street rod builder keeps turning out unique rides Shannon MacDonald is quite a sight cruising the Fraser Valley east of Vancouver in the 1924 Ford Model T street rod she built herself with pieces collected over five ALYN EDWARDS years. CLASSIC Reminiscent of the RIDES hot rods from the 1950s, the cut-down Model T roadster pickup has a 420hp Chevrolet V8 motor and five-speed transmission. The 849 kilogram (1,850 pound) vehicle can travel down a quarter-mile drag strip in just 12 seconds, reaching a speed of 186 kilometres per hour (116 mph). She did everything on the car herself, including custom building the chassis, many of the suspension components, engine exhaust headers and fabricating the custom body. It took just four months to complete. A self-confessed detail geek, her street rod boasts many unique features, including a shifter handle sculpted in the image of her dog, 1937 Ford tail lights, Model A Ford headlights, a radiator ornament from a 1932 Buick and seat warmers. “It gets a little cool cruising in an open car,” she says of the street rod she’s driven more than 10,000 km in the past two years. Shannon made the molds for the fiberglass body, welded up a frame and used ‘old skool’ parts to make up the hot rod. She drives it every day that it isn’t raining. “I have a need for speed,” she says while chatting about her family history. Shannon grew up in the Yukon on Teslin Lake, two hours southwest of Whitehorse. Her grandfather had a red Cadillac Coupe de Ville and ran a truck stop on the Alaska Highway. Her mother operated a fishing charter company and raced boats. She was influenced by hanging around the truck repair shop and her mother’s racing boats. “It’s in
Shannon MacDonald with her current hot rod project and her own 1924 Ford Model T roadster constructed in just four months from parts and pieces
the genes,” she says. In her spare time, she is the starter at Mission Raceway Park for the Street Legal Program which encourages car enthusiasts to only drag race their cars in a safe, controlled environment. She races her own car at the Mission and Ashcroft drag strips. Her first car was a 1963 Chevrolet Impala convertible handed down from her parents when she was still in high school. “It had a 327 cubic inch engine and was quite the car,” she recalls. After careers as a cook, truck driver and custom motorcycle fabricator, she settled in to build custom cars in the Langley shop owned by long time friend Gary Wright, of Pass Time Auto. She is a self-taught fabricator and welder and has earned a reputation as a master custom car builder. In the past five years, she’s completed 13 custom street rods. One of Shannon’s best customers is Ford Model A enthusiast Ross Macleod of Langley’s Valley Vintage Auto. With little time to spare, Ross decided to pick
Shannon MacDonald’s 1924 Ford Model T hot rod parked with relics that are a source for needed parts
parts out of his barn to build Model A Ford street rods to present to his son and son-in-law on Christmas morning. He picked Shannon Macdonald and Pass Time Auto to do the job. They worked day and night on the cars with Shannon and Gary Wright doing the fabricating and welding and Ross providing the parts and labour. It was a mad scramble but the pair of vintage street rods were completed on time and made for a very special family Continued on Pg. B2

Christmas. “There is such a creative side to her,” Ross says. “She’s fueled with passion and everything she does has a different flavour to what is commonplace.” Shannon is currently putting together a 1928 Ford Model A ‘squareback’ pickup truck with Gary Wright as a shop truck. She has stretched the cab six inches through the doors and fabricated everything from the chassis and floor to the roof and radius rods for the suspension. Her creations aren’t like everyone else’s with many unique custom modifications. Shannon’s next challenge will be for herself. She wants to find a 1926 or 1927 Model T sedan and build a street rod with a roof. “My plan is to head to Newfoundland on a cross-Canada trip with the closed car,” she says. “Roadsters are a blast but only on nice days.” Alyn Edwards is a classic car enthusiast and partner in Peak Communicators, a Vancouver-based public relations company aedwards@ peakco.com

2013 Fiat 500 Turbo:
A new flavour hits the sweet spot in the Cinquecento line-up METROLAND MEDIA WHEELSTALK.COM
At the recent Concorso Italiano in California – one of the largest gatherings of Italian vehicles in North America – the FIAT Brand introduced the new 2013 Fiat 500 Turbo. It features a more powerful turbo engine, sport-tuned suspension, trackproven brakes, dynamic exterior design and sport-styled interior. Behind its performance-designed front fascia, the new 2013 Fiat 500 Turbo features a single turbocharger, twin intercoolers and sport-tuned exhaust to deliver 34-per-cent-more power (135 vs. 101 hp) and 53-per-cent-more torque (150
vs. 98 lb/ft) compared to the Fiat 500’s naturally aspirated 1.4-litre MultiAir engine. Developed for high-output applications, the Fiat 500 Turbo is paired to the track-proven C510 fivespeed manual transmission with a 3.35 final-drive gear ratio for quick acceleration and faster top speed, while achieving up to (US) 34 mpg highway. For a more aggressive appearance, the new 2013 Fiat 500 Turbo features a pronounced front fascia, pushed 2.7 inches forward of the Cinquecento’s signature “whiskers and logo face, to accommodate the new engine. Behind the unique 16-inch aluminum wheels with Nero (black) painted
pockets, the Fiat 500 Turbo features a high-performance brake system with semi-metallic brake linings at all four corners, larger 11.1-inch ventilated front rotors for greater stopping power (up from 10.1-inch) and brake calipers lacquered in Rosso (red) paint. To make sure this Cinquecento properly handles the more powerful engine, the Fiat 500 Turbo features a unique lower control arm and the 500 Sport model’s sport-tuned spring rates, shock tuning and steering calibration. Exterior colours for the 2013 Fiat 500 Turbo include Argento (silver), Bianco (white), Grigio (gray), Nero (black), Rame (copper), Rosso (red) and all-new Verde Azzurro (green and blue.)
The new Fiat 500 Turbo made its world debut at the recent Concorso Italiano as part of the annual Pebble Beach and Rolex Historics weekend in California.

Rhys Millen has claimed yet another world record and overall victory at the recent Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Millen set a blazing pace to the summit in his hillclimb-prepared Hyundai Genesis Coupe racecar, needing only 9:46.164 to make international motorsports’ most challenging ascent over 14,000 feet. For 2012, Millen’s own race team, Rhys Millen Racing, made additional performance enhancements to the current world-record-setting Genesis Coupe, the very same car that set the Time Attack 2WD record last year with Rhys’ father, Rod Millen, at the wheel. Not content to rest on their laurels from last year’s victory,
the RMR team held nothing back in race preparation for this year’s effort. Special focus was given to maximizing the grip potential of the new all-tarmac course and its considerably higher average speeds. On the power side, a new Garrett GTX3582 Turbocharger was fitted, yielding an amazing 700 hp and 700 lb/ft of torque from the Hyundai V6 powerplant. To handle this extra power, the brake calipers were upgraded for extra thermal capacity, and additional cooling ductwork was installed to ensure optimal brake performance at the summit’s extreme altitudes. The entire car was scrutinized for weight reduction potential and suspension settings were further optimized for Millen’s unique rally/drift driving techniques.

Ford C-MAX takes customers further country or across the city – stemming mostly from a growing list of Ford innovations that have helped the vehicle to deliver an impressive list of metrics, such as its 917 km overall range, taking customers from Toronto to Ottawa and back on one tank of gas. As hybrid vehicle drivers traditionally saw superior fueleconomy figures in city driving, loyalists maximized their fuel economy through regenerative braking in stop-and-go traffic. But now higher-speed innovations have caught up on efficiency. The power of C-MAX Hybrid stems

Ford says its C-Max Hybrid at 4.0 L/100 km city, 4.1L/100 km highway and 4.1L/100 km combined beats the Toyota Prius v by up to 0.7L/100 km.
The all-new Ford C-MAX Hybrid has been certified by Canadian government-approved test methods at 4.0 L/100 km city, 4.1L/100 km highway and 4.1L/100 km combined – beating Toyota Prius v by up to 0.7L/100 km. Hybrids traditionally have been more economical in city driving than on the highway, unlike conventional vehicles. C-MAX Hybrid is Ford’s first hybrid vehicle to offer similar figures for both city and highway driving. C-MAX Hybrid returns the same fuel economy whether driving cross-
from the combination of a gasoline engine and a battery-driven electric motor, providing customers with “real car” performance and capability. C-MAX Hybrid will offer a top speed of 100 km/h in EV mode and 188 net horsepower, beating the Toyota Prius v by more than 50 horsepower. When powered by gasoline, C-MAX Hybrid uses the all-new 2.0litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine – powerful and fuel-efficient, and among the most advanced non-turbocharged four-cylinder powertrains Ford has ever offered.

The Chrysler Group’s Street and Racing Technology (SRT) brand has staged the first official appearance of the new, limited-edition 2013 SRT Viper GTS Launch Edition model. The vehicle debuted Aug. 17 at the Quail Lodge as part of “The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering” event, then on Aug. 18 and 19, the SRT Viper GTS Launch Edition joined the Concept Lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The 2013 SRT Viper GTS Launch Edition evokes memories of past Viper Coupe reveals in 1996 and 2006 with symbolic GTS Blue paint and dual Bright White stripes – exclusive to Launch Edition models – running the length of its all-new exterior that incorporates iconic Viper styling cues with a contemporary execution. The 2013 SRT Viper GTS Launch Edition carries on the tradition of special Viper model builds to the fifth generation of the Americanbuilt supercar with true performance enthusiasts and collectors in mind. In addition to its historically significant paint scheme, the wheels on SRT Viper Launch Edition models are a modern deepsection design, featuring a five-spoke polished forged-aluminum design. “Stryker” badges found on the hood and steering wheel add to the exclusivity, with a blue background replacing grey found on all other 2013 SRT Vipers models. The all-aluminum, mid-engine 8.4-litre V10 powerplant delivers 640 hp and 600 lb/ft of torque – the most torque of any naturally aspirated sports car engine in the world. Standard safety features include electronic multistage stability control, traction control and new four-channel antilock brake system.

The new Porsche 911 Carrera 4 unites the performance and efficiency of the new generation of the 911 Carrera with the dynamic benefits of the latest version of the active all-wheel drive system Porsche Traction Management. The Porsche all-wheel drive with rear-focused layout in this latest 911 version guarantees maximum vehicle dynamics on a wide variety of road surfaces and in all weather conditions. The new 911 Carrera 4 models deliver significantly enhanced traction and dynamic performance. The new all-wheel drive 911 is being launched in four versions – as the 911 Carrera 4 and 911 Carrera 4S and each as Coupe and Cabriolet. The most distinct identifying
feature of the 911 with all-wheel drive is still the wide rear section: compared to the two-wheel drive 911 Carrera models, the rear body is wider by 44 mm, and the rear tires are each ten millimetres wider. The traditional red light band that connects the two taillights has also taken on a new form and is now lighted. In addition, the front air intakes are specific to the Carrera 4 models. All new models have a seven-speed manual gearbox as standard, and the Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) gearbox is available as an option. The 911 Carrera 4 Coupe with 350 hp can sprint from zero to 100 km/h in as little as 4.5 seconds (Cabriolet: 4.7 s) and reach a top speed of up to 285 km/h (Cabriolet: 282 km/h), depending on equipment features.
