Escort services may see lower licence fees By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
After nearly two decades, the cost of licensing an escort service in Kamloops could become less expensive. As part of a major update to the city’s business-licence bylaw, staff are recommending the fee for escort and dating services drop to $2,000 from $3,000. The fee, which is higher than those charged to other types of businesses, also applies to exoticdancing services and body-rub studios. Don Garrish, the city’s business
licence and land co-ordinator, said the fee was originally pushed up from about $175 in the mid-1990s, following a trend among municipalities at the time. However, during the last decade, getting escort services to actually pay the fee has become a problem. “For the last number of years, all we’ve had is one licensed agency in Kamloops,” Garrish said. While the city has tried to enforce the bylaw, Garrish said advances in technology have made it difficult to track down escort services, even as they are advertising in classified sections of newspapers and in the Yellow Pages.
DOWNTOWN 444 ST. PAUL 250.828.9988
“They run in like a virtual world, from a website or a cellphone, no addresses, nothing like that,” Garrish said. To try to get a better feel for why businesses weren’t getting licences, the city partnered with local media, including KTW, to collect feedback. Garrish said the high cost of the licence was the main complaint. “Reducing the fee came about as a way to encourage more of these types of businesses to be in compliance,” he said. “This doesn’t mean we’re going to get compliance. It means we’re making it easier for them to comply.”
There’s also another argument for bringing the fee down, Garrish said. The actual cost of licensing an escort business is much closer to $2,000. “One of the principles that we’re trying to work on through the whole bylaw review is when we charge a business-licence fee, it should represent the amount of effort it takes us to licence it,” he said. Escort-licence fees originally went to fund the social and health opportunities for persons in the sex trade program (SHOP), which helps prostitutes in the sex trade leave the profession.
Though the program, run by the ASK Wellness Centre for the city, still gets partial funding from the local government (just over $69,000 this year), the money no longer comes from businesslicence revenue. However, with the change in fees, community and social development supervisor Jennifer Casorso said the city is looking at setting up another partnership with ASK that would provide harm reduction specifically for people working as escorts. “We would be able to work through the licensing program, hopefully, to provide that link to ASK Wellness,” she said.

Beer! Get yer beer right here Mother and three cubs captured, released north of Kamloops in the stands!
McArthur Island bruins finally nabbed
By Andrea Klassen By Andrea Klassen

The suspects fled but, after a hot pursuit through several riverfront yards on the afternoon of Friday, Sept. 7, a mother bear and three cubs that had roamed the McArthur Island Park area for several weeks were taken into custody by conservation officers. “She ran the three cubs up a tree and stayed at the base of the tree and we were able to tranquilize her,” conservation officer Darcy McPhee told KTW. The cubs were darted one by one and, while two of the baby bruins were close enough to the ground to be easily dealt with, McPhee said a third bear climbed so high up the tree that a fall would have been unsafe. To get the cub down, extra officers were called in to break the bear’s fall with a tarp. “Raining branches and leaves, down came this cub,” McPhee said. “So, we were sort of jostling left and jostling right. We got lucky and it landed right in the centre and a couple neighbours who were watching said, ‘Oh, you must do this all the time.’” The bears were placed in a live trap and released north of the city later that day, unharmed. McPhee said the mother bear, whose presence in the park
A sleepy bruin in Riverside Park caused a bit of a fuss on Thursday, Sept. 6, when it climbed a willow tree near the waterpark looking for a place to nap. Conservation officers cleared the area under the tree, but let the bear — which did not display any aggressive behaviour — come down and leave the park on its own. Andrea Klassen/KTW
led to the closure of the McArthur Island nature trail for several days, was originally attracted to the area because of its wild Saskatoon bushes. “But, she very quickly found apples along Tranquille Road,” he said. “She was basically making her way along the river and just zipping into yards and finding apples. “And, that did it. She abandoned the natural
food stuff pretty quick.” While the bears weren’t harmed, McPhee said the story doesn’t really have a happy ending. The mother bear has been ear tagged and, if she returns to the city, there’s a good chance she will have to be killed. “Not to mention she’s in a different habitat now that’s unfamiliar,” he said. “Life became a lot
tougher for her and her cubs.” However, another set of bears that were on the move in Kamloops may have a rosier future. Two orphaned bear cubs that had been frequenting the Sun Rivers golf course were also captured on the morning of Sept 7. “We had two specialized live traps set up at Sun Rivers, then the bears showed up
across the highway at the Mount Paul Golf course in a tree,” McPhee said. Officers were able to tranquilize both bruins, who were shipped to a rescue organization in Smithers on the weekend. A third cub spotted in the area hasn’t been seen in a long time. McPhee said it’s not clear what happened to it. Meanwhile, another
bear visit ended peacefully in Riverside Park on Thursday, Sept. 6. The area near the park’s water park was cleared at about 5 p.m. when the bruin climbed a large willow tree looking for a place to sleep. However, because the bear displayed no signs of aggression, conservation officers decided to let it have its nap and leave the park on its own.

Feel like a cold one at a Kamloops Blazers game? If a plan before city council goes ahead, you won’t have to leave your seat to get one. At its regular meeting today (Sept. 11), councillors will weigh in on an application to the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch to permit hawkers to sell beer and wine in the stands at Interior Savings Centre. The application, which would be made by the city on behalf of the Blazers, would bring alcohol sales in the ISC more in line with other WHL venues, according to a report by city staff. Licensed capacity for the ISC won’t change if hawkers are added and liquor licenses for the Parkside Lounge, Rivers Room and private boxes won’t be affected. According to the report, the food vendor at ISC is also planning to put hawkers in the stands this year, selling peanuts, popcorn and other goodies. City staff estimate the snack and liquor hawkers could generate a combined $500 in revenue per game.

Forum crowd agrees — stop proposed Ajax mine By Dale Bass

STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
A receptive audience that filled the Alumni Theatre at Thompson Rivers University on Sunday, Sept. 9, heard a message with which most everyone appeared to agree — the proposed Ajax copper and gold mine must be stopped. Derek Cook, who teaches political science at Thompson Rivers University, said the gathering was the first of what will be monthly forums looking at various aspects of the proposed project south of Aberdeen. He said the series is a reflection of the academic freedom enjoyed at the university. On Sunday, Oct. 14, the forum will focus on the environmentalassessment process, while on Friday, Nov. 16, Alain Deneault,
author of a book on mining in Canada, will speak. The first forum this past weekend featured a group of local people speaking on the proposal, including Coun. Donovan Cavers, TRU

Hasan, who told the group he had agreed to speak two days before the forum date, said there would be good economic results if the mine proceeds, but noted that, as a resident of Aberdeen with a child who goes to school in that area, having a mine less than a mile south of the neighbourhood concerned him. Barz told the audience there is plenty of information available online about the mine and KGHM, the Polish company promoting the project, and encouraged
them to read as much about it as they can and to send their concerns to Environment Minister Terry Lake, who is also B.C. Liberal MLA for KamloopsNorth Thompson. One member of the audience asked what will happen with any documentation sent to Lake should his party not form the government after the May 2013 election. Cook said it would be up to Lake to decide what he passed on to his successor. However, Lake told KTW that all information being submitted on the project from the public is going to the environmental-assessment office and not to his ministry. The office remains independent from the minister, Lake said, and he will receive information at the end of the assessment process.

Woman remains in ICU By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
A 20 year-old woman who was struck by a car while walking in a crosswalk remains in critical condition in the intensive-care unit at Royal Inland Hospital. The woman was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries after a red Firefly ran a red light at the intersection of Fortune Drive and Leigh Road at about 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 7. According to witnesses, the woman was in the crosswalk when the car struck her, throwing her as far as 40 feet. The impact of the collision shattered the vehicle’s windshield, causing it to cave in. Ken Mertz, whose house directly overlooks the corner where the woman was struck, told KTW he was walking away from the intersection when he heard the collision. “I’ll never get that sound out of my head,” he said. When he turned back, the woman was lying quite a distance from the crosswalk and appeared to be in very bad shape. Kamloops RCMP say the 85-year-old driver, whose name has not been released, is co-operating with the investigation. At this time, alcohol is not believed to be a factor. Speaking to media on Monday, Sept. 10, RCMP Staff Sgt. Grant Learned described the investigation as “still very much ongoing.” A full mechanical inspection of the driver’s vehicle is expected to take place this week, which Learned said is standard practice when a serious collision occurs. Investigators are also waiting on a report from an RCMP collisions reconstructor. “We still are waiting for that report before any decisions will be made with respect to charges, if any,” Learned said. Depending on the findings of the investigation, the driver could be ordered to re-test for his driver’s licence by the provincial superintendent of motor vehicles, Learned said. Mertz said accidents are a frequent occurrence at the intersection outside his home. “It’s hazardous going across here,” he said. “There’s people that run the red light all the time.”
Police continue to probe the Sept. 7 incident in which the 85-year-old driver of the red car (left) ran a red light and seriously injured a 20-year-old woman in a crosswalk. KTW photos

At least 50 volunteers at Thompson Rivers University are receiving free parking. Christopher Seguin, TRU’s vice-president advancement, said that’s not likely going to sit well with some staff and faculty who have expressed anger at the increase in the fees this year, but added it’s being done to compensate for the contribution the volunteers make to the institution. The volunteers are involved with the alumni foundation and the board of governors, Seguin said, and their parking is only free if they are on campus doing work related to those groups. “These are purely voluntary boards and these volunteers are giving us their time, their energy, their influence and their money. They put in hundreds of hours and it’s one way of us acknowledging this.” Other volunteers on campus, however, do not receive free parking for
the times they must be on campus — and that reality has had an impact on the budget for TRU’s radio station. Myles Gregory, chairman of the board for CFBX, said there were many discussions through the summer about spending $850 to ensure there is one parking spot near the station for community volunteers. It’s money that wasn’t in the budget — the guaranteed-spot fee is new — but board members were concerned the station would lose community volunteers if parking wasn’t provided, so the decision was made to pay for a parking spot. About half the station’s volunteer core come from off-campus, Gregory said, and several are seniors who are at the station during the day, when parking spots are usually all filled. “One of our concerns is we have some great hosts during our daytime hours who are seniors from the community and we knew if we went to
zero [spots], we would have lost those volunteers. “That was a big issue in deciding if we wanted to buy parking,” Gregory said. “And, it was also done to help get new volunteers because it’s a benefit for them.” Before the change in parking fees, CFBX had been provided for years with two free designated spots in a lot across from the studio. The new spot is in the same lot, but down farther. Of the two paid station staff, one drives and pays for his own parking and the other commutes. “Parking is always a challenge,” Seguin said, noting the daily rate increase was $1, going from the $3 established in 2006 to $4 effective this month. “But, TRU is facing some hard economic realities,” he said, “and the reality is parking and international tuition are parts of the solution.” In addition to the new parking fees, the university also increased tuition fees for all students earlier this year.

TRU near bottom in study on research University’s young age cited as reason for showing By Tim Petruk STAFF REPORTER

Losing weight has never been easier.
Thompson Rivers University brass is casting positive light on a recently released academic study in which it was found to be at or near the bottom among Canadian schools when it comes to faculty research. A report titled Measuring Academic Research in Canada: Field-Normalized Academic Rankings 2012, released last month, pegged TRU dead last in science and engineering research and in the bottom half for social sciences and humanities research. Alex Usher, one of the study’s authors, said the seemingly poor performance of TRU is nothing to worry about. “If you look at Thompson Rivers — its origins as part community college and part open university — it’s not a huge surprise,” Usher, president of Higher Education Strategy Associates, told KTW. “There’s a pretty heavy correlation between institutional age
and score here.” TRU ranked 40th out of 61 schools overall — 37th and 46th out of 61 in social sciences and humanities research and 54th and 55th out of 55 in science and engineering research. The number are based on bibliographic citations and funding for faculty research. Christopher Seguin, TRU’s vice-president of advancement, said the scores are to be expected. “We’re delighted on where we came out in the social sciences,” he said. “As for the other rankings, we’re at the very beginning of an evolution where our capacity is growing every year. “The more of our faculty that engages in active research, the more change we’ll see in these numbers. Given time, we’ll evolve into something far different than we are right now.” Seguin also noted the involvement of undergraduate students in faculty research at TRU — something that doesn’t happen often on other Canadian
campuses. “Some of our undergrads have access to lab equipment that post-grads at other universities rarely see,” he said. “It’s a big advantage for us.” In the overall rankings, TRU finished ahead of established universities, including Regina, Winnipeg and St. Francis Xavier, and not far behind Ryerson, Acadia and Brock. The overall rankings were topped by UBC, followed by McGill, Toronto and Alberta. In the future, Usher said, TRU will likely move up the charts. He brought up the example of Toronto’s Ryerson, which had a start similar to TRU about 15 years earlier. “With size and money, they’ve pulled up to be about one-third of the way up the ladder,” he said. “Thompson Rivers is not the same size yet. “I’d say if you come back in another 15 years or so and you don’t see Thompson Rivers start to rise, then that might be indicative of something.”

B.C. Conservative discord gives B.C. Liberals jolt of hope
T
HIS WEEK BEGAN WITH message No. 63 of 224 unread weekend missives in my email box at work capturing my attention. It was an email message from Friends of John Cummins. No, the group was not offering me millions of dollars from a deceased Nigerian prince. It was, in fact, announcing that Cummins, the leader of the B.C. Conservative Party, had, on the weekend, had his leadership endorsed by six regional directors of the upstart party. One of these directors is Alan Forseth of Kamloops, a man whose allegiance to the party is unquestionable, as anybody who has checked out Forseth’s Facebook page can attest. Meanwhile, 85 members of the party met in Victoria on the weekend, with the official word emerging that the B.C. Conservatives are united. That is certainly not true and to claim as much — in the face of the party’s lone MLA suggesting he is not content with Cummins’ leadership and the leaking last week of in-camera minutes from a party meeting that show divisions — is an insult to the electorate. Of course, the governing B.C. Liberals are a mess, with a beleaguered leader and cabinet ministers quitting the cause day after day after day. When the party in charge is heading straight for the political cliff off of which Social Credit (in 1991) and the NDP (in 2001) tumbled, it would make strategic sense to present a united front. It would be strategic, but it would not be honest. Cummins has claimed the dissenters number only a few on the party’s board.
CHRISTOPHER FOULDS Newsroom
MUSINGS Then again, the documents leaked last week suggest more than a few and John van Dongen, the AbbotsfordSouth MLA who left the B.C. Liberals earlier this year to join Cummins’ Conservatives, decided to offer a “no comment” when asked if he still supports Cummins as leader. The party will hold an annual general meeting in Langley on Sept. 22, at which time members will be asked to vote on whether to hold a leadership review. As it happens, I ran into van Dongen in Abbotsford on the weekend, as we both attended a non-political function. We spoke at length about politics and, though the comments were mixed with cocktails and mostly off the record, it is safe to say the truth of what is happening with the B.C. Conservatives is somewhere in the middle. Whether Cummins is the right person to lead the Conservatives in the May 2013 election is for Conservative members to decide. It cannot be disputed that Cummins carries with him some political liability, the severity of which depends on one’s perspective. As a Conservative MP, he voted in
favour of the HST. Shortly thereafter, when running for the B.C. Conservative leadership, he criticized it as a “tax grab.” Cummins was also on record as favouring a byelection once a politician quit a party to join another, yet van Dongen was permitted to do so without giving voters a chance to reaffirm their commitment to their MLA carrying a new party banner. The B.C. Conservatives are desperately hoping the AGM later this month rids the party of the discord once and for all and allows it to focus on replacing the B.C. Liberals as the Official Opposition following the election, which takes place exactly eight months from tomorrow (Sept. 14). Whether that battle takes place with Cummins at the helm, or van Dongen seeking the leadership, or an entirely different ruling class altogether, remains to be seen. However, it is not hyperbolic to suggest the party’s very survival is pinned to this current mess. With third-place finishes and paltry numbers in the April Port Moody-Coquitlam (15 per cent of the vote) and Chilliwack-Hope (25 per cent of the vote) byelections, the Conservatives have precious little on which to build. The B.C. Liberals, however, are likely revelling in this unexpected political gift that has been delivered in the shadow of the election campaign. Whether it unwraps to reveal a second life or explodes amid a united Conservative front shall be revealed, which is why watching B.C. politics remains the most fascinating entertainment choice, year after year. editor@kamloopsthisweek.com
The summer holiday is over and kids are back in the classrooms for another 10 months of education. This year, students and their parents don’t have to worry about scrapped after-school activities or navigating the simmering tensions between teachers and administrators. In September 2011, students entered classrooms with teachers on a work-to-rule job action. Instruction didn’t stop, but teachers didn’t write report cards and wouldn’t host parent-teacher conferences after school hours. Administrators — principals, vice-principals, superintendents, managers — scrambled to cover watching elementary kids at recess and after school. A three-day strike in March capped off a terrible year in public education. This year, classrooms are somewhat back to normal, but the labour war between teachers and government remains — especially with the issue of class size and composition. The B.C. Teachers’ Federation is suing the government to regain bargaining rights over these points and to challenge Bill 22. The union has a court date in December. This kind of posturing could be moot. Former Education Minister George Abbott expects the next round of bargaining with teachers to begin in March or April, mere months before the next provincial election. By then, Abbott, and many other high-profile Liberals, will be coasting toward retirement. This awkward gap between the start of the school year and the possible demise of the B.C. Liberal government means it could be a quiet year for labour relations in education. The BCTF won’t waste time negotiating with a lame-duck administration when it could restart talks with a more labour-friendly NDP government. And, outgoing B.C. Liberals will be more than happy to hand this hornet’s nest to their friends across the aisle.

With Ajax’s arrival, we all fall down Editor: Re: Polish firm takes control of Ajax: Abacus Mining has sold its stake to the Polish firm, KGHM, for $30 million? So, let the money change hands. It would seem Abacus sees the writing on the wall, but KGHM is still betting on approval. And, it really wouldn’t make much difference to us which one of them was responsible for 23
years of disruption in our city, would it? Along with the rest of concerned Kamloops citizens, I am appalled there is still talk of placing a mine on city property. No one with a grain of common sense would build a city on top of a mining project, however lucrative. How, then, can we consider allowing a mine to be built on top of our city? As for jobs, we’d all like to

Residents deserve right to vote on mine Editor: After reading excellent letters to the editor, many of them opposed to the proposed Ajax copper and gold mine for environmental reasons, I have come to the conclusion there is a great portion of the Kamloops population who are quiet, but who would like the right to vote. They would like to vote on whether this mine
should be allowed to invade our neighbourhoods with its pollution. We need to stand up and let everyone know we are here and that we don’t want that giant hole in our midst. C. Schimpf Kamloops
Editor: What has happened to our language? Why do so many people continue to say: “I would have went;” “Her and I;” “Him and I;” “For you and I:” “Between you and I;” and “I don’t know nothing.” I am an old immigrant. When we were taught English in Belgium, we learned to say, “I go, I went and I would have gone.” Marcelle Leibel Kamloops
Let’s serve up some squash on McArthur Island Editor: You asked for thoughts on what readers would like to see built on McArthur Island, once the city tears down the McArthur Island Youth Centre. I would really like to see a facility that includes squash courts. Since the regretful transition of the Squashworks (Racquetor) building on McGill Road into an office building, and the closure of Malone’s on 8th in North Kamloops, squash in this city has been virtually non-existent. While I am anxiously awaiting the reopening of the old Malone’s building this winter, which I understand will offer racquetball and squash, I have reservations relying on a private business to keep the sports going in the Tournament Capital (call me once bitten). Was the existence of a private squash facility not the reason we missed the proverbial boat on getting courts at the Tournament Capital Centre? Other communities (I’ll use Smithers

Investigators are looking into what is believed to have been a “gang-related hit” ordered by a Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre inmate against one of the jail’s correctional officers. That’s how the incident is being described by Dean Purdy, spokesman for the corrections branch of the B.C. Government Employees’ Union. He said the plot was uncovered on the night of Thursday, Sept. 6, while KRCC was under lockdown following an unrelated stabbing. “Within an hour of that incident, the jail received intelligence that an inmate had arranged a hit on one of our officers,” Purdy told KTW, noting officers have since learned the incident was gang-related. It is now being investigated by jail staff, although Kamloops RCMP Staff Sgt. Grant Learned told KTW this week the detachment was not involved in a probe. As for the stabbing, Purdy said, an inmate was rushed to hospital with non-life threatening injuries after he was stabbed in the upper body with a homemade shank. Purdy said both incidents speak to the overcrowding at the maximum-security provincial jail, located in west Kamloops on Hillside Drive. “The current situation inside the jail is a pressure cooker right now,” he said. “The number of gangaffiliated inmates is also becoming more and more onerous.” Murphy’s

No changes planned to dog bylaws Coun. Ken Christian notes canine attacks on decline By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
When there’s a pit bull, Rottweiler or similar large-breed dog in her path, Mary Gural typically takes the long way around. It was a strategy the 84-year-old put into practice on the afternoon of Sunday, Sept. 2, when she and her husband came out of the McDonald’s restaurant on Fortune Drive to find a Rottweiler tied to a post right next to their car. I turned around and said to my husband, ‘I don’t like the looks of that dog. Let’s walk around it,’” Gural told KTW. Mary Gural needed 98 stitches after a Rottweiler attacked her in a McDonald’s parking lot on Sept. 2. Andrea Klassen/KTW
She was about 15 feet from the animal when it lunged, knocking her to the ground and sinking its teeth into her arm. “And, next thing I knew, I was on the ground, I had banged my head, the dog was gone and my arm was bleeding,” Gural said a few days after the attack, which left her arm black and blue from her fingers up past her elbow. The bite itself required 98 stitches to repair. “I didn’t do anything to him. I wasn’t even near him,” she said. “If I would have provoked him or something — but, all I did was look at him when I walked out the door and he looked at me, and next thing I knew he was at me.” On Wednesday,
Sept. 5, Midnight the Rottweiler was put down, in part because of the severity of Gural’s wounds. However, City of Kamloops bylaw services supervisor John Ramsey said there are still questions about why the dog — which had bitten another person only a few months before — was even in the city. Midnight had already spent five weeks in city custody after biting a Canada Post worker on June 1. In order to get the dog back, Ramsey said its owner had to meet a number of conditions. Midnight had to be muzzled, microchipped and kept in a special enclosure. The owner wasn’t able to build the required kennel in town
and elected to move the dog out of the city instead, Ramsey said. If Midnight came back to Kamloops, bylaw services was supposed to be alerted. “We just don’t know why they didn’t notify us,” Ramsey said. “That’s part of the conditions. So we’re still actively investigating some stuff.” Midnight’s owner will likely face a fine, though Ramsey said the department is still examining its legal options. This is the second serious dog attack in Kamloops in the past six months. In April, two American Staffordshire terriers attacked a man near Thompson Rivers University. X See OWNERS A12

What are your feet doing? At Kamloops This Week we employ feet to get our newspaper to your doorstep. Using your feet to help deliver the news is a great form of exercise and a healthy way to stay in shape. It also relieves stress and lowers your blood pressure. Here are some interesting facts about feet: • Each toe has three bones except the big toe, which only has two. • 25% of the bones in your body are in your feet. That’s 26 bones! Or in some rare cases, 28! • Your feet excrete as much as half a pint of moisture every day • The largest feet in the world belong to a man sporting size 28½ • The average person walks about 10,000 steps a day. Over a lifetime that’s 4 times around the world • Standing is more tiring than walking because of the strain placed on the same few muscles
Please consider being an independent news carrier for Kamloops This Week. You will earn extra dollars using your feet twice a week to deliver an award winning community newspaper to the homes in your neighbourhood.

Owners need to focus on their dogs X From A11
The man suffered multiple bites and was taken to hospital. A local animal trainer and former Rottweiler breeder is asking the public not to blame all dogs of similar breeds for the attacks. “All dogs have teeth, all dogs can bite,” said Robert Gill. “We’re not going to fix the problem by pointing fingers.” Gill would like to see the city send dogs who have displayed aggressive tendencies to obedience training and require proof they have completed a course. “The owners need to understand they need to have something fixed,” he said. But, Coun. Ken Christian and Mayor Peter Milobar, who sit on the city’s co-ordinated enforcement task force, said they don’t see the city tweaking
its dog bylaw after the attacks. “There’s conditions put on dogs that are supposed to minimize, things like muzzling and not running at large, which, if they had been followed by the owner, the dog attack would not have happened,” Milobar said, noting even training won’t help if an owner isn’t willing to take day-to-day responsibility for the animal. Christian believes mandatory training would be difficult to enforce. “The kind of people that generally have those kind of animals are not the kind of people that are going to readily submit to a city-ordered training program,” he said. Christian said despite the two highprofile attacks, the number of animalhuman conflicts in the city is actually on the
decline, which he takes as a sign the current policies are working. “These are awful incidents and they need to be dealt with,” he said. “But, let’s not react by changing a bylaw because of a particular incident rather than changing a bylaw because there’s a trend that shows you need to.” Gural, for her part, is glad this particular Rottweiler won’t get another chance to bite anyone but, mostly, she wants people to stop leaving their animals in front of public entranceways. “A dog like that, or any dog, should not be tied up near a public area, fast food, where there’s children around and people coming out of the building,” she said. “You never know what’s going to happen, whether it’s a poodle or whatever.”

Charge follows standoff By Tim Petruk STAFF REPORTER
tim@kamloopsthisweek.com
A 30-year-old Kamloops man has been charged with sexual assault after a standoff on the North Shore on the weekend that forced dozens of people from their homes for more than five hours. Kamloops RCMP Staff Sgt. Grant Learned said the allegation dates back two weeks and has nothing to do with the standoff on Spruce Avenue near Fortune Drive on Saturday, Sept. 8. The standoff began just before 6 p.m., Learned said, when the suspect threatened suicide and holed up in his bedroom with four firearms. His estranged wife, their children and a number of the kids’ friends were able to leave the house safely. Learned said the man refused to come out of the house for police and said he wanted officers to shoot and kill him. The man and his wife are in the process of separating, Learned said, and the threats of suicide came after an argument about marital issues and finances. An RCMP negotiator convinced the man to leave the house at about 11:20 p.m., and he was arrested without incident before being held overnight at Royal Inland Hospital for observation. The standoff forced the evacuation of a number of neighbouring homes, as well as half of the Georgian Court apartment complex. Learned said the sexual-assault charge is based on information that arose from witnesses while the standoff was underway. “The charge did not arise from the events relating to the standoff, but arose two weeks earlier,” he said. Police seized four guns — two rifles and two shotguns — from the man’s home. He was slated to appear in Kamloops

Car set on fire Police are investigating after a car was apparently torched near a North Kamloops park early on Sept. 8. Mounties were called to an address in the 400-block of Alexander Avenue — not far from McDonald Park — just before 2 a.m., where a 2002 Ford Focus was ablaze in a back alley. “The vehicle had

Joe (Joseph Nickolaus) Benzer We are sad to announce the passing of Joe (Joseph Nickolaus) Benzer in Merritt, on September 5, 2012, at the age of 82 years. Joe was born and took all his schooling in Kelowna. He moved with his parents to Merritt in 1951. He was trained as an Electrician by his Dad and later joined the IBEW where he worked for the rest of his career. He thoroughly enjoyed his work and travelled much of the Province working at different B.C. sites. He retired to Kamloops, and returned to Merritt when he needed more care. Joe enjoyed swimming and paddling in the war canoe races at the Kelowna Regatta. He was one of the first people to swim across Okanagan Lake, a distance of over a kilometre. He enjoyed the outdoors, participating in hunting and fishing. He was involved in Boy Scouting, rising to a Troop Leader. Although Joe never married, he was very much a part of our families. He was especially loved by his nieces and nephews, who he used to take out for breakfast whenever they were all together. They would stop to have a visit with him anytime they went through Merritt. He was predeceased by his parents Nick and Liz, and brother Bill. He is survived by his brothers, Ernie (Kaye) in Kelowna, Art (Gail) in Montrose, sister-in-law Sybil in Terrace, and his eleven nieces and nephews and their families, also three great, great nieces. He will be missed by all the family. A special thank you to Maurice Mathieu for being a wonderful friend to Joe, visiting often, taking him out, and doing any shopping for him. You were a huge part of his life the last few years that he lived in Merritt. Also thank you to the staff at Nicola Meadows, where he lived until he needed more care. You were awesome to him, teasing and helping him and practicing “Tough Love”. The last few months at Gillis House were made so much easier because of the very caring staff there. A special thanks to Dr. Van Der Merwe. Merritt Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Joe’s ashes will be put in his father’s grave in Merritt, B.C. A marker will be added to match his mother’s and dad’s. There was a service at Gillis House on Sunday, September 9, at 1:30 pm. Nicola Meadows is having a Celebration of Life tea in memory of Joe on Saturday, September 15, from 2 to 4 pm. All are welcome. Come and bring your stories about Joe.

We seldom ask for miracles, But today just one would do. To have the back door open, And see you walking through. A million times we've missed you, A million times we've cried; If love could have saved you, You never would have died. In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still, In our hearts you hold a memory, That no one else can fill. Always and forever Your Memory and Spirit will be with us. Singh Park goes green with new solar-power system Singh Bowl Park is the most recent of the city’s facilities to go green with the installation of a new solar-power system to power the washroom building, parking-lot lighting and irrigation system. The system consists of a dozen 230watt panels installed on the south-facing side of the washroom building roof. Power is generated by the panels and used by the facility. Any excess power
LOCAL NEWS is supplied back to the BC Hydro grid for use elsewhere. The system is expected to crate a netzero facility with the amount of energy produced eventually meeting all the demands of the building. A meter installed on the building at the end of July has shown the system has been
producing more power than needed. Weather and usage will cause adjustments in power use throughout the year.

TRU support workers vote to strike Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) members working at Thompson Rivers University have voted in favour of strike action. Members of CUPE Local 4879 voted 83 per cent in favour of strike action, with 68 per cent of the 607 members taking part in the vote. “Our contract expired in 2010,” said president Lois Rugg. “We have met with the employer about a dozen times and we have still made virtually no progress towards a new contract. At this point, we feel our only option is job action.”
The main issues remain job security, inflation protection and a wage increase. Union members did not receive a raise in 2010 and 2011 as part of the B.C. Liberal government’s net-zero mandate. As a result of the strike-action vote, the union can apply for 72-hour strike notice, which would put it in a legal position to take job action on campus. “Our goal is not to negatively impact students, who are also facing funding and service cuts as well as higher tuition,” Rugg said.
“Our goal is to pressure the university to return to the table and negotiate in good faith for a fair and reasonable collective agreement.” CUPE locals at UBC, the University of Victoria and the University of Northern B.C. in Prince George have also voted in favour of strike action. CUPE Local 3338 at Simon Fraser University will hold a strike vote at the end of this month.
CUPE workers at TRU include support workers in a variety of fields. Union members have been working under provisions of the mostrecent contract, which expired two years ago. For a look at the wage provisions of the contract, which was effective April 1, 2009, go online to tru. ca/__shared/assets/support_staff_salary_schedule11838.pdf.

Female golfer makes WolfPack history By Marty Hastings STAFF REPORTER

IVES AND girlfriends of golf-crazed men might be able to relate to Natasha MacKenzie, the first female golfer in TRU WolfPack history. “My husband was like, ‘You need to come golfing with me,’ and he would just be pushing me to go. “I said ‘Oh no, I don’t think I’d be good.’” MacKenzie caved and picked up a club three years ago, when she was 23. Since then, the Kamloops product
has won four tournaments — including two women’s open division championships on the Golf Town National Amateur Series — and spawned an obsession with the game. “I went out and fell in love with it right away,” MacKenzie said at a WolfPack press conference. “I want a career in golf. That’s why I’m getting a business degree.” Those who have spoiled a good walk at Tobiano Golf Course might recognize MacKenzie. “I’m a cart girl there,” she said. “I wanted a job at Tobiano so I could get free golf.” With a young,
business-minded staff, including Stephen Connor and Dion Sirianni, the course on Kamloops Lake — ranked sixth in the province by the PGA of B.C. — seems a perfect fit. MacKenzie can learn the game — to the benefit of TRU and Pack head coach Bill Bilton Jr. — and the business at the same time. The 26-year-old South Kamloops secondary graduate, along with the rest of TRU’s golf team, will play only four Pacific Western Athletic Association tournaments before the provincial championship. The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association champi-
onship will run from Oct. 15 to Oct. 19 in Oshawa, Ont. Bobby Armstrong, Tim Birk, Chase Broadfoot, Sean Cameron, Nick Corno, Reegan Czar, Matt Gervenitis, Blake Gozda and Bobby McPeak round out TRU’s golf squad. Geoff Fahlman is Bilton’s assistant coach. TRU hosted the first PacWest tourney of the season on the weekend at The Dunes at Kamloops Mackenzie was fourth on the girls’ side, finishing with a tworound total of 179. Jen Woods of UBC Okanagan shot 159 to win the women’s title. Corno was the top male finisher for the
Pack, shooting 154 over two days to finish tied for fourth. Morgan Decksheimer of Vancouver Island University won the men’s title with a 36-hole total of 139. The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades won the overall team title. A second female golfer — Sara Ann Rolin of Pitt Meadows — signed up in August, but she has since left the team. MacKenzie would like to have a few same-sex teammates in the future: “That’s what every woman says — ‘I don’t think I’d be good’ — but you never know until you try.”
The Kamloops Blazers moved their pre-season WHL record to 4-0 with a 5-4 win over the Vancouver Giants in Ladner on Friday, Sept. 7. JC Lipon, a 19-yearold winger from Regina, scored with 12 seconds remaining in overtime to sink the Giants. Kamloops was down three goals with 17 minutes left to play in the third frame when Cole Ully scored to cue the comeback. Rob Rob Trzonkowski scored with less than five minutes to play and Colin Smith notched the equalizer with 56 seconds on the clock. Rookie Mitch Friesen was the other Blazer goal scorer. Lipon has scored four goals and racked up three assists in three pre-season games. Cole Cheveldave made 32 stops between the pipes for Kamloops on Friday. The Giants started Liam Liston, who made 18 saves on 19 shots before being replaced by Payton Lee. John Neibrandt, Nathan Burns, Riley Kieser and Taylor Makin scored
for Vancouver. Anthony Ast, who is facing suspension after being assessed a checking to the head major last week, was not in the Giants’ lineup. Blazer Chase Souto, who was on the receiving end of Ast’s hit, also sat out. The Blazers are next in action against the Prince George Cougars on Friday, Sept. 14, at Interior Savings Centre. Game time is 7 p.m. It is the last preseason tilt for the Blazers, who open the regular season against Kelowna at ISC on Friday, Sept. 21.

The peewee Kamloops Wildcats improved to 2-1 in community football play with a 20-6 win over the Kelowna Dragons in the Little Apple on Sunday, Sept. 9. Solid offensive-line play from Bryce Welz, Preston Jenkins, Jagger Reid and Brennan Ettinger paved the way for Ben Prokopetz, who racked up 183 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Carsen Day targeted receivers Mattias Nelson, Thomas Dyck and Reggie O’Rourke for 63 yards and Sean Smit kicked a convert to round out the scoring. Darcy Rowden led the defence with a forced fumble and seven tackles. Colby Griffiths, Dayton Tomlin, Hunter Driver and Cole Fink combined for 14 tackles. Cameron Treadwell forced a fumble and Eric Thibault and Rorik Munson each recovered a fumble for the winning team. The Wildcats host the Kelowna Lions at noon on Sunday, Sept. 16, at Hillside Stadium.
Rams best Broncos Nick Downey and the hometown Langley Rams sunk the Kamloops Broncos in British Columbia Football Conference play at McLeod Athletic Park on Saturday, Sept. 8. Downey, a receiver, caught one touchdown pass and returned two punts to paydirt in the first half, helping Langley to a 55-10 win. Kamloops’ lone touchdown came on a 55-yard connection from quarterback Jesse

Neufeld to receiver Brennan Plante. Aaron Smit kicked a field goal and a convert for the visitors. The Broncos are 1-4 ahead of a pivotal matchup with the Westshore Rebels of Victoria on Sunday, Sept. 16, on Vancouver Island. Westshore sits third in the BCFC with a 4-1 record, behind the Vancouver Island Raiders of Nanaimo and the Rams, whom are tied atop the standings at 4-0-1.
Spitfires grab gold Branden McKimmie came up big in a penalty-kick shootout for the under-11 Kamloops Spitfires at the Revelstoke Little Bear Youth Soccer Tournament on Sunday, Sept. 9. The Kamloops goalkeeper stopped four of five shots and the Spitfires brought gold back to the River City with a 3-2 victory. Reehin Lindores and Joe Gysel scored in the shootout for the Tournament Capital representatives. Kamloops topped Canmore 5-2, tied Revelstoke 3-3 and lost 2-0 to Shuswap FC in round-robin play and advanced to the final on goal differential. Jacob Fassler (4), Brent Robertson (4), Ethan Leggatt and Blake Grantham scored on the weekend for the Spitfires.

Canadian “Superfood” Gaining International Attention Creator of UMAC Core™
Still Def ying The Odds UMAC-CORE is a unique product created out of an urgent need. In 2004 Tom Harper was diagnosed with a life threatening illness caused by asbestos exposure and given only months to live. He had been raising shellfish at his Research Sea Farm on Vancouver Island, simultaneously perfecting the only method worldwide of growing wild phytoplankton for use in the Aquaculture industry. Based on the wild plankton’s powerful nutritional profile, upon his diagnosis he decided to consume the blend of micronutrients as an energy source he so desperately needed at the time. Every day he ingested the minute ocean plants and every day he felt stronger and experienced less pain. Finally a surgeon performed exploratory surgery. To the doctor’s surprise he was inexplicably able to deliver Mr. Harper a clean bill of health. Six years later, Tom Harper is healthy and, in his words, “feeling totally different. I’m pain free and I’m leading a good, healthy, normal life.” Not long after the product was officially launched in Canada and the U.S.A., the University of Utah completed a randomized full double-blind placebo-control pilot study of UMAC-CORE over a 90 day period with human subjects. Doctors who conducted the studies were impressed with the results and concluded that UMAC-CORE really does help enhance the immune system and support mood fluctuations, quality of sleep, and overall emotional well-being. UMAC-CORE quickly gained far more attention than Harper could have imagined. “People were experiencing really positive shifts in their health,” Harper says. “Our success was consumer driven and we weren’t quite prepared for the demand. There were times when staff would offer to spend the night at the office so that we could get the product out, and they often did!” Today UMAC-CORE is available in over 800 health food stores across Canada, in stores all across the United States and overseas in Australia, New Zealand and Spain. Following the interest and countless testimonials from the public, UMAC-CORE has been written about in dozens of newspapers across North America – and the excitement continues to grow.
Tom Harper—Creator of UMAC Core™ Marine Phytoplankton carefully inspects a sample of newly grown wild Phytoplankton at his Sea farm on Vancouver Island, BC Kim Iles of Choices 4 Wellness – a Retailer in Chatham Ontario says, “I recommend UMAC-CORE to everybody – it’s one of the top two products in our whole store and that’s because people see results! I tell people that if they needed to pick only one thing, then pick UMAC-CORE. It has all the vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids. It’s a complete food and does so many different things in the body that it’s probably the most complete supplement to recommend.” People are even giving it to their pets with remarkable results. In fact, Kim Iles says it’s the results she gets with animals that have convinced her of the product’s efficacy. “It’s not a placebo effect when you give it to your pets. We’ve nursed sick animals back to health with UMAC-CORE. That’s how I judge if a product really works – if you can see results with animals – and we do.”
Also, once the majority of plankton is harvested, the remaining plankton nutrients are returned back to the ocean – 3 to 5 times more than what was originally “borrowed” to commence the bloom cycle; helping to strengthen the base of the ocean’s food chain. Extraordinary benefits have already been discovered with a product that has only been available for 5 years. UMAC Core is available in Liquid and Capsule formulations. For information call Hedley Enterprises at 1-888-292-5660 or to locate a Retailer near you go on-line to: www.umaclife.com
Mr. Harper’s Sea Farm which grows the wild phytoplankton offered in UMAC-CORE is also making a positive impact on the environment. “I consider it one on the greenest companies in the world. Not only are we able to give back to human beings, we are also giving back to the planet.” Unique Sea Farms’ only by-product is pure oxygen! Marine Phytoplankton consumes carbon dioxide and releases oxygen back into theatmosphere as it blooms in the one million litre outdoor open tanks.

Peter Loncar, Kyle Fertile and Sebastian Gardner have excellent timing. All three WolfPack veterans — each of whom took time away from the TRU soccer scene last year — are back in the fold this season, just in time to replace graduated players Brynden Swint, Conor Doherty and Adam Dodgson. “It’s huge to get them back,” WolfPack co-head coach John Antulov said. “You don’t have to take two or three years to wait for them to develop.” The WolfPack opened the 2012 campaign against the Douglas College Royals on Saturday, Sept. 8, at Hillside Stadium. That game ended in a 2-2 draw. Oriol Torres and Dion Gouldsborough were the Pack goal scorers. TRU fell 2-1 to the Kwantlen Polytechnic Eagles at Hillside on Sunday, Sept. 9. Torres was the lone WolfPack talisman. TRU finished with a record of 4-4-2 last season and missed the Pacific Western Athletic
Association playoffs. This year, Antulov likes his charges’ chances of returning to the post-season. “We’re looking pretty solid right now,” he said. “We’ve got a good mix of youth and experience and I think we’re going to do well.” Key returnees include forwards Jacob Kaay, Falah Alquahtani and Torres, midfielders Brandon Mendez and Ashley Raynes, defender Corey Wallis and goalkeeper Travis Froehlich. “We’ve got our 22 or 23 guys out there ready to play,” Antulov said. “It’s up to them in training to see who’s going to get the most playing time. You have to earn it.” Wallis and the three WolfPack returnees played together this summer with the under21 Kamloops Heat of the Pacific Coast Soccer League. “We lost three veterans last year,” Wallis said. “This is kind of like replacing them — and having experience on the field is hugely important.”
Gardner back after cancer battle Easily the most inspirational WolfPack
story of the fall is the return of Gardner, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in December.
After six months of chemotherapy, the cancer was determined to be in remission in July. The Vernon product,
who played with the Heat this summer, is still finding his legs, but is thrilled to be back with the Pack.

Penton: Breakthrough season for Orioles
F
ANS OF THE Toronto Blue Jays look to the Baltimore Orioles and say, “Why can’t we do that?” The Orioles, whipping boys for at least the last 10 years in the American League East, are suddenly threatening to win baseball’s toughest division, sending a message to bigspending division rivals New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox that money might be able to buy you love, but it doesn’t always produce a championship baseball team. The Orioles, about the only team the Blue Jays could regularly finish ahead of in the A.L. East, seem to have been living on a diet of Five-Month Energy drinks. After posting a dismal 69-93 record last year (and a standard 28 games behind the pennant-winning Yankees), the Orioles went into September this year neck and neck with the Yanks. On Sept. 9, the Birds were sitting a non-Baltimore-like 17 games above .500. It’s not necessarily that manager of the year candidate Buck Showalter is smarter this year than he was in 2011. It’s just that a good crop of Oriole young players have matured
they end their 21-year playoff drought. The Orioles have proven that worst to first is more than just an optimistic phrase.
“Quote, unquote” BRUCE PENTON From PRESS ROW together. Outfielders Nick Markakis and Adam Jones, third baseman Mark Reynolds and first baseman Chris Davis are leading the offensive charge and are four of Baltimore’s seven players with double-digit home-run totals. (The Jays, by comparison, have five.) Barring a complete September collapse, the Orioles are almost assured of at least a wildcard playoff berth, making the post-season for the first time in 15 years. It could be the first of a few, because the Orioles’ future is brightened by the arrival next year of superduper phenom pitcher Dylan Bundy, who’s 19 but is already receiving Stephen Strasburg-like comparisons. Meanwhile, the Jays stumble along to a lastplace finish, suffering through an injuryplagued season and hoping that perhaps 2013 will be the season
• Greg Cote of the Miami Herald: “Astros owner Jim Crane said he was “open” to signing (Roger) Clemens. Baseball analysts speculated that Crane
might have been drunk at the time.” • Brad Dickson of the Omaha (Neb.) World-Herald, on Allen, Texas building a $60 million high-school football stadium: “Because it’s Texas, this could be the practice field.” • Comedy writer Argus Hamilton, on the scheduling breakdown at the new $60
million high-school stadium in footballcrazed Allen, Texas: “Half the time it will have football games, and the other half it will have non-religious events.” • Norman Chad of the Washington Post, about the NFL’s two Mannings: “Peyton operates with the precision of a heart surgeon; Eli is more of a traffic
cop wandering around looking for expired meters.” • Chad again, suggesting that ‘suspended’ New Orleans coach Sean Payton will nonetheless have coaching influence this season: “With today’s technology, Payton could be calling plays from the Curiosity rover on Mars.” • Dwight Perry
of the Seattle Times: “The NFL ruled that Denver linebacker D.J. Williams tried to manipulate a drug test, possibly with non-human urine. So, in addition to his sixgame NFL ban he’s been declared ineligible for next year’s Kentucky Derby.” Care to comment? Email brucepenton2003@yahoo.ca

Creativity exists in everyone — somewhere them: One common roadblock to developing creativity is the sense that curiosity is an indulgence. It’s not. Curiosity is a sign of intelligence. Take time to think about an idea. Take notes and explore different possibilities for your idea. Allow the thoughts to flow and carry them with you even when you are doing something mundane, like the dishes. Being engaged in menial labour is a great time to think creatively. I think very creatively when I am building my stretcher frames. • Enjoy the process: When you finally have that moment of clarity, when the creative thought comes through you, revel in it! Take a moment and write it down, paint it out or sing it through. Creativity is about process — don’t worry if it’s good. That doesn’t matter. What is important is the joy of the eureka moment. • Make mistakes: When it comes to building your creativity, take risks and follow your intuition. Playing it safe won’t get you anywhere. Push the limits of your imagination. Ask what if? I make tons of mistakes painting and that’s OK. Usually, I can bring the painting back and, if I can’t, so what? I’ll just make another one. You will be amazed at how many happy accidents lead to some of the greatest creative moments ever. • Don’t be afraid: Lots of people poo-poo new creative endeavours. There is a whole class of individuals that will sit in their chairs and tell you are doing it wrong. Don’t listen.
Karla Pearce The Creative EDGE
I
T’S AMAZING HOW MANY TIMES A DAY I HEAR: “I’m not a creative person.â€? “I wish I was creative.â€? “You’re so lucky to be born with the creative gift!â€? Many people think creativity is something that you have or you don’t. It doesn’t help there is a great deal of mysticism and misinformation perpetuated around the act of creativity. And, yes, it is true artists are creative and, in most cases, abundantly so, but everyone has the ability to become creative. Creativity is all about finding new ways of solving problems and approaching situations. If you’ve ever wanted to boost your creativity, these tips can help. • Prepare to develop your creativity: Sounds silly but, like anything in life, the first step is commitment. Do not put off your efforts. Set goals and put time aside each day to develop your skills. In order for artists to paint, they must spend many hours thinking about the painting. That might involve taking a drive or setting up a studio, making sure that they have the tools that they need. This can translate to any form of creativity. • Ask questions — lots of

The members of Hey Ocean have been across Canada several times. Now, said Ashleigh Ball, it’s time to broaden the band’s horizons — ideally adding a European skyuline. To do that, the band has started an online fundraiser, with the goal of raising $30,000. “It felt weird at first,” Ball said, “but it’s a good program and it’s doing all right. By the second day, we had $8,000 or $9,000.” Until it needs to get passports ready, the band is heading out into Canada again, with a stop on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the Blue Grotto, 319 Victoria St. It’s a return gig; Hey Ocean played the venue last year to a great crowd, Ball said. This tour is supporting the band’s new release, Is, which was released in May. It’s a collection of original songs written by Ball, who handles flute for the band, along with guitarist David Beckingham and bassist Dave Vertesi. All share vocal duties.

Is follows the 2008 release of It’s Easier to be Somebody Else, which has been dscribed as a fusion of playfully funked-up party pop. While the trio is the core, the band is tavelling with a larger group this time, including Johnny Andrews on drums and Devon Lougheed on guitar and keyboard. Tickets are $15 in avance at Long and McQuade, 955 Lorne St., and at the venue.

Make time, have fun, find your creativity X From B1
The only way to avoid criticism is to do nothing and, even then, you can be criticized for your lack of creativity. Insecurity will suppress creativity, which is why it is important to build confidence. Surround yourself with positive influences — and don’t worry about the armchair critics. • Make time for creativity: Waiting for inspiration doesn’t work.
If I only wrote when I was inspired, you wouldn’t be reading this column. Schedule some time each week to concentrate on some type of creative project. You will find that, once you get into something, the creative juices start flowing and you will start to do good work — and have fun doing it. • Have fun: Expressing yourself creatively can be extremely
rewarding, healing and is known to boost a person’s intelligence. It is an important part of our lives. How many people out there have gotten rich just from one or two good ideas? And, how did those thoughts come to them? Probably in a flash of creative brilliance. Creativity is important and beneficial in our everyday lives at home, at work or at play — our thoughts pass back and
forth, processing and cross-referencing information. Once you train yourself to trust your thoughts and the connections they make, you will become more open to your own creative genius. Who knows where your creativity will lead you? Karla Pearce is an artist, teacher and is the owner of Karla Pearce Art Gallery,

LOCAL NEWS
CBC goes live on Oct. 9 The Kamloops bureau of CBC Radio will hit the airwaves on Tuesday, Oct. 9, for the first time. And, when it does, Shelley Joyce will host Daybreak Kamloops. Joyce has hosted radio programs in Vancouver, Victoria and Kelowna. She’s been reporting for the Kelowna CBC bureau for six years. Joyce has also written for the Winnipeg Sun, Vancouver Province and Today’s Parent. “We have been looking forward to this new addition
to the CBC service in British Columbia,” said Johnny Michel, the province’s CBC managing director. “The show will reach more than 100,000 people in the area and, with Shelley’s tenure in broadcasting and remarkable style of storytelling, we will hear great things from Daybreak Kamloops.” Construction continues on the new bureau at 218 Victoria St. Once operational, it will also provide local news, traffic and weather information. “Canadians have long told us they want local services,” said
Kirstine Stewart, executive vicepresident, CBC English services. “We made a commitment in our strategic plan to include the city of Kamloops and although it isn’t the extent at which we had planned prior to our cuts, we’re proud of what our team has been able to do for the residents in the area.” The new bureau is part of CBC’s five-year strategic plan, released in February 2011, which set out several priorities, including expansion of service in Kamloops. Daybreak Kamloops will begin broadcasting at 94.1 FM.

Talent show fundraiser for CMHA planned There’s a client in one of the programs at the Canadian Mental Health Association who makes some of the tools Bill Jackson sells at his Cuz I’m Magic store. It’s because of him the owner of the downtown store has decided to donate proceeds
from his upcoming talent show to the CMHA. Jackson is just starting to accept applicants for the Friday, Sept. 14, show at The Art We Are, 246 Victoria St. He’s hoping for a wide range of talents to be shown — but no guitarists, he said. Rather, he’d like
to see other musical instruments featured, as well as the abilities of jugglers, ventriloquists and, of course magicians. The CMHA client he referred to makes something called a mouth coil, a tool for magicians that, when put into play, allows
them to appear to be pulling from their mouths a scarf that changes colours. “Because of this one guy,” Jackson said, “I just thought it would be good to help out the CMHA. It’s rewarding all the way around.” The show starts at 6 p.m. Admission is $5.

The 32nd annual Terry Fox Run will take place on Sunday, Sept. 16 in Riverside Park. Registration is at 9 a.m., with the run starting at 10 a.m. Distances are 3.5 kilometres, seven kilometres and 10.5 kilometres. The Terry Fox Run is suitable for bikes, wheelchairs, strollers and inline skates. However, dogs are not permitted.
THE TERRY FOX LEGACY July 28, 1958: Terrance Stanley Fox is born in Winnipeg. March 9, 1977: Terry discovers he has a malignant tumour in his right leg. The leg is amputated 15 centimetres (six inches) above the knee. The night before his amputation, he reads about an amputee runner and dreams of running. February 1979: Terry begins training for his Marathon of Hope, a cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research and awareness. During training, he runs over 5,000 kilometres (3,107 miles). April 12, 1980: In St John’s, Terry dips his artificial leg into the Atlantic Ocean and begins his odyssey. He runs an average of 42 kilometres (26 miles) a day through six provinces. Sept. 1, 1980: After 143 days and 5,373 kilometres (3,339 miles), Terry stops running outside of Thunder Bay as his primary cancer has spread to his lungs. Before returning to B.C. for treatment, Terry says, “I’m gonna do my very best. I’ll fight. I promise I won’t give up.” Sept. 2, 1980: Isadore Sharp, chairman and CEO of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, telegrams the Fox family with a commitment to organize a fundraising run that will be held every year in Terry’s name. He writes: “You started it. We will not rest until your dream to find a cure for cancer is realized.”

Fox on the run again in Kamloops More than 30 years after the run named after him began, Terry Fox’s legacy is still holding strong. The 32nd annual Terry Fox Run takes place in Kamloops on Sunday, Sept. 16, and organizer April Buder is expecting plenty of young children and families in the 400-strong crowd that typically comes out for the event. “That keeps the whole legacy going,” she said. “Because we’re going to rely on those younger people to keep it going down the road — unless, of course, we do find that cure for cancer.” Though Fox, who lost a leg to cancer, embarked on his crosscountry run to raise money for cancer research well before the run’s youngest participants were born, Buder said most of the kids she meets are aware of his story. “The schools do a phenomenal job at the elementary level of teaching about the legacy of Terry Fox and what he’s done for cancer research,” she said. “It was amazing.
Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope started on April 12, 1980, in St. John’s and ended just outside of Thunder Bay, Ont., on Sept. 1, 1980. He ran 5,373 kilometres in 143 days.
“We were set up at the mall on the weekend and even the young ones, they already know.” In Kamloops, the run raises between $15,000 and $18,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation, which funds cure-oriented cancer research nationally and internationally. This year, Buder said, she’s hoping to see participants push that number higher. “A lot of what we receive is personal donations at the site. “We don’t get a lot of people taking the pledge forms and collecting donations beforehand,” she said. “So, if we could just get one extra donation from everyone, our numbers would grow tremendously.”
The run’s starting point is also on the move this year, to the Rotary Bandshell in Riverside Park, though most of the route will remain the same as in previous years. Participants have the option of running a 3.5-, 7- or 10.5-kilometre route. While the run is open to cyclists, inline skaters and wheelchair users, dogs are not allowed on the route. Registration begins at 9 a.m. on the morning of the event, with the run itself beginning at 10 a.m. A by-donation pancake breakfast precedes the run and Buder said face painting, balloons and musical entertainment will also be on offer.

Spark ignites interest in GM’s small cars
S
OME LAUNCH EVENTS include scenic drives along mountain roads and coastal highways — even racetracks — to showcase a new vehicle’s character and driving dynamics. The streets of Toronto set the stage for the new Chevrolet Spark and, despite my usual gripes about the city’s traffic, year-round construction and general state of asphalt disrepair, it was the ideal proving ground for this urban mini-car. It’s a perky little hatchback, tall and relatively narrow, NEIL MOORE but with proFirst nounced wheel DRIVE arches and standard-equipped 15-inch alloys that are pushed to the corners for a more planted look than small Chevies from the past. With door handles hidden in the C-pillars, the Spark looks like a threedoor, but is actually a five-door — and the only one in a segment that includes Fiat 500, Scion iQ and Smart Fortwo. I’m not sure whether to call it a large mini-car or small subcompact. The Spark is 128 millimetres longer than the Fiat, 640 millimetres longer than the Scion and nearly a metre longer than the Smart, yet it’s smaller than its stablemate, the subcompact Sonic. It’s also taller than all of these, which means headroom isn’t an issue, and it beats the competition in rear leg room. The Spark will comfortably seat two modestly-sized adults in back with enough space behind the 60/40 split bench for a sizeable load of groceries. Drop the seatbacks and the classleading 323-litre cargo hold expands to a surprising 883 litres. Indeed, there’s a practical element to this vehicle, not to mention a low starting MSRP of $13,495, but I wouldn’t call it cheap and cheerful. GM sees mini-cars as a more-premium segment, which is evident in the Spark’s chic competition. Consequently, it’s zeroed in on what matters to its young, urban and tech-savvy target demographi which, aside from affordability, includes style, connectivity, nimbleness and fuel economy. In terms of style, the Spark comes in eight tones, several of which are con-

A delightfully inexpensive add-on is the BringGo navigation app (available this fall), which, for around $50, will provide full-func-

Other enhancements for 2013 include bumping engine size a little for more mid-range torque, larger 185-series tires for better traction and handling, variableassist electric power steering, hill-start assist, more sound-deadening material and a new mirror design to reduce wind noise. The Spark is no ‘hot hatch’ and, should you go hard into a corner, expect some body lean. It’s a bit buzzy, but no more than I’d expect at this price point and displacement. Where it struggles is on the highway, with merging and passing requiring substantial effort from the 1.2-

Here, the Spark does not disappoint with 7.1/5.2/6.2 litres/100 km (city/ hwy/comb - automatic) and 6.3/5.1/5.8 litres per 100 km (city/hwy/ comb) with manual. What GM hopes will win over consumers, in particular from automakers like Kia and Hyundai, is a long list of standard equipment. The base five-speed manual Spark LS isn’t in the lineup just to get feet into the showroom. It includes the wheels and spoiler mentioned above, along with power windows, tinted glass, driver info centre, tilt steering wheel, four-speaker audio system and six months of OnStar. On the safety front are 10 airbags, stability control, traction control, hill-start assist, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Air conditioning is extra at $1,150. The 1LT and 2LT trim levels include all of the above, plus such niceties as MyLink, upgraded audio, heated leatherette front seats and more exterior bling. Tire air pumps may become obsolete The days of manually adding air to underinflated tires could be a distant memory thanks to a new innovation under development in laboratories at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. Keeping tires properly inflated doesn’t just eliminate the practice of checking a tire’s air pressure and finding a tire pump and gauge that works. It also can mean savings at the fuel pump. Underinflated tires result in between a 2.5 per cent and 3.3 per cent decrease in fuel mileage, according to government and industry research. sense into the foundation of the vehicle’s detailed and precise engineering. Full-scale implementation of this concept with the Mazda6 enabled a highgrade, premium finish with a harmony of form and quality to be achieved, while not
compromising on functionality. Attention was paid to areas that passengers see and touch, and also to the feel and sound of operating the vehicle, in order to create a sense of unity throughout the car.
Focus world’s top seller The world record for “Longest Parade of Ram and Dodge Pickup Trucks” was set recently in Dresden, Ont., with 273 trucks taking charge.
Ram breaks record The Ram pickup is now featured under the “Longest World Records” category in the Guinness Book of World Records. On Aug. 25, a new world record was set as 273 owners of the 2013 Ram 1500 gathered at the Dresden, Ont., raceway to successfully break the Guinness World Record for the “Longest Parade of Ram and Dodge Pickup Trucks” that included new and used models of all shapes and sizes. Organized by the Dresden Agricultural
Society, the money generated by the parade was donated to the Canadian Mental Health Association. The event was part of the Ram Rodeo, an 11-stop tour that sprawls across southern Ontario, showcasing competitive-rodeo skills performed by professional cowboys and cowgirls. The parade spanned more than two kilometres throughout the raceway and surrounding streets. For Dresden, the record attempt was a unique draw to the tour
stop as this quiet little town is now known to hold two world records. In 2010, Dresden broke the record for the World’s Longest Tractor Parade. Chrysler Canada has been supporting grassroots rodeos throughout the country for more than 30 years that help give back to each community that they take place. The Ram Rodeo Program is involved with rodeo committees and Chrysler dealers in approximately 100 cities and towns.
Ford has producedr its 350-millionth vehicle — a Ford Focus, which is the world’s best-selling car for the first half of 2012. Ford is celebrating the production milestone at its newest global manufacturing facility located in Rayong, Thailand, approximately 200 kilometres southeast of Bangkok. In addition to the manufacturing milestone, for the first six months of this year, Focus became the best-selling single car nameplate in the world, based on global data from IHS Automotive. The Focus sold 489,616 units in the first half of this year. Its nearest competitor, the Toyota Corolla, sold 462,187. Ford’s Thailand Manufacturing plant is a $450-million facility that opened in May to produce the new Focus, which also is built in four other countries.

The new Mazda6 celebrated its world premiere at the recent 2012 Moscow Motor Show. It is the second of a new generation of Mazda vehicles that adopts the Japanese company’s full range of Skyactiv technology and the “KODO – Soul of Motion” design language. The Mazda6 is the production model born of the Mazda Takeri concept car first showcased at the Tokyo Motor Show in December 2011. “The new Mazda6 has a robust framework and a low, wide stance that expresses strength and stability, creating the impression of amazing vitality, without detracting from the universal aesthetic appeal and beautiful form it displays as a C-D segment car,” said chief designer Akira Tamatani. The exterior design of the 4.8-metre long sedan conveys animal-like tenacity, dignity and a sporty flare through its smooth and powerful physique. The co-ordinated black interior is chic and contemporary without compromising on a timeless feeling of luxury and quality. New-generation Mazdas are developed under the design craftsmanship concept which incorporates the designer’s esthetic
