Cloverdale hosts world record bid
By Jennifer Lang You might have called it a day of peace, music and careful crowd counting. Cloverdale was poised to help set a Guinness World Records yesterday (after The Reporter’s press deadline), when the Millennium Amphitheatre park was the site of an attempt to form the world’s largest human peace sign. Organizers say 6,000 people were needed to join in for the record-setting attempt Sept. 12 at Cloverdale Millennium Amphi-

CFFF’s website. The trip to Ottawa was an emotional one for O’Brien Hugh, who works as a secretary in the office at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary, and is a familiar face to many Cloverdale residents. Though it was difficult, the journey was worth taking, she
said Tuesday. “The opportunity to meet with so many families that have shared the same loss was something that will stay with me forever,” she said. She and her sister were able to chat with the Red Knights – members of a firefighters motorcycle club taking part in the Ride of Respect to attend the monu-
ment’s unveiling. It was led by Surrey firefighter Tim Baillie. She also looked for the name of another Surrey firefighter inscribed on the wall, Patrick Glendenning. O’Brien Hugh also met up with ceremonial piper Jeff Sim, a long time Surrey firefighter who recently retired, and spent four years at Hall #8 in Cloverdale.

Modern problems VICTORIA – Local politicians are preparing for their annual convention, to be held Sept. 25-28 here in the provincial capital. One of the first orders of business this year will be a vote to raise the dues paid by local governments to the Union of B.C. Municipalities, to cover rising travel costs for staff to serve on provincial committees. The plan is also to change the name to Union of B.C. Local Governments, to reflect the participation of regional districts and aboriginal communities. So what do these committees and conferences accomplish? The UBCLG, as it will soon be known, is mainly a lobby group for local politicians to seek changes to federal and provincial laws to keep up with changing times. The resolutions offer a snapshot of modern problems facing local governments. A major theme is public safety, and this year it is the Columbia Shuswap Regional District renewing a long-standing plea for more provincial policing money for rural communities. Surrey has a resolution seeking better notice and control of a grow-
ing number of medical marijuana licences issued by Ottawa. Local fire and police departments end up dealing with licensed grow-ops that spring up quietly and create electrical hazards, or expand production beyond their licences as this stealth legalization continues. Pitt Meadows, home to a Hells Angels clubhouse and drug-related crime familiar to most urban communities, wants B.C. to follow Alberta’s lead and give police authority to remove known gang members from bars and clubs. Gangs tend to adopt certain establishments, and there isn’t much the owners or police can do about it. This year, the debate may go further. Metchosin is seeking support to call on Ottawa to decriminalize marijuana, ending a “failed policy which has cost millions of dollars in police, court, jail and social costs.” No chance of that under the Stephen Harper government, but it’s worthwhile to send the message. Another long-shot demand, sparked by the abduction of threeyear-old Kienan Hebert of Sparwood last year, is for Ottawa to

Cloverdale takes a team approach to Terry Fox Run By Jennifer Lang When Jim McMurtry moved here in 1996, he was surprised to learn Cloverdale didn’t have its own Terry Fox Run. The high school teacher had been participating in the annual run while living in Switzerland, so he joined the Surrey Run that year. But he decided to revive the Cloverdale run the year later, building it up to 100 to 150 participants. Still, he says, it “felt like a lonely exercise,” despite great support from local media and loyal runners. That is, until Elaine Gooliaeff stepped up as chair of the Cloverdale Terry Fox Run in 2006. Gooliaeff, a fixture at the “hometown run” in Port Coquitlam with her family, was able to broaden the committee of volunteers in Cloverdale. The Cloverdale run started small, and it’s held firm to its community roots. “When we seek donations, we try to stay within Cloverdale,” she says, “And our participants are mostly from Cloverdale, so they support those donors.” At the 30th anniversary of Terry’s original Marathon of Hope in 2010, the 300 Cloverdale participants taking part raised $17,000 for the cause. Gooliaeff shares a personal connection to the run; her father and Terry were second cousins, and their two families became very close after Terry’s dad and mom Rolly and Betty Fox moved the family to B.C. from Winnipeg. After Terry lost his leg to cancer, her father adapted his wheelchair so Terry could play wheelchair basketball. Terry wasn’t an icon to her when he ran his Marathon of Hope, Gooliaeff says. But when he fell ill again and had to call off his marathon, she witnessed the toll his death took on the family around him. This year’s run takes place this Sunday, Sept. 16, starting and ending at the Cloverdale Legion, which is hosting the event for the third year in a row. Branch 6 got involved when a late legion member, Jim Gallagher, asked immediate past president Pat Ostrom if the organization could get involved. “I said ‘Sure,’ and we met Betty and Rolly and Elaine, and it grew from there,” Ostrom recalls. Supporting community events like this one, where the members can get involved, is what the Legion stands for, he says. Plenty of Legion members volunteer their time and the Branch 6 Ladies Auxiliary helps prepare food on run day. And last year, the the runners, walkers, strollers and wheelers took welcome refuge in side the roomy legion hall during a downpour on run day. Ostrom has since recruited his wife, Sue, their two daughters and a son-in-law as volunteers, for the cause. On run day, participants take a pause for reflection when they notice that somebody who was there the year before is absent – or by writing a note to say they’re running for a friend or relative. “You often see people fairly choked up before the run,” McMurtry says. “The message doesn’t change. It remains powerful regardless of the runners there are.” This year’s run features new, clearly marked routes for 1 km, 5 km and 10 km routes. Walkers, runners, strollers, families, and pets are welcome. Team registration is encouraged. Go to terryfox. org to register. There will be a silent auction featuring items donated by local merchants, including a special edition pair of Terry Fox running shoes. Other activities include face painting, entertainment and food, making it an ideal family outing. Registration is at 9 a.m., the run starts at 10 a.m. Meet at the Cloverdale Royal Canadian Legion, 17567 57 Avenue. To volunteer, email Elaine Gooliaeff at egoolia@telus.net.

Local auto technician earns AirCare kudos
KRISTINE SALZMANN PHOTO
Educating owners is key, says Matthew Wilkie.
A local automotive technician has been recognized by AirCare for excelling in the field of emissions repairs. Matthew Wilkie at Cloverdale Auto Repair received an AirCare Quality Repair Award for “superior effectiveness.” Wilkie, 27, began his career at Cloverdale Auto Repair eight years ago as an apprentice. Service manager Rui Carrao said Wilkie has an unmarred record when it comes to diagnosing vehicles so that they pass AirCare. “He has a 100 per cent rate on it, which is outstanding for diagnosing [and] troubleshooting AirCare prob-
lems. That’s very hard to get,” Carrao said. Wilkie credits his unblemished pass rate to educating car owners. “That’s why we’ve been able to maintain a 100 per cent pass rate, through customer education. That it’s not good to fix it for a day, it’s good to fix the root cause – and then the car won’t fail next year just because it had a little Band-Aid on it. It’ll be good for many years.” Wilkie was introduced to the automotive technician field while attending Frank Hurt Secondary and went on to BCIT. —Kristine Salzmann

Square dancing galore
People in search of an activity that combines fitness and socializing are in luck this fall. Introductory square dance lessons are now available at three locations in Surrey, with the Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre joining the Cloverdale Rec Centre and Port Kells Hall in offering this fun-filled activity to the city. It’s more of a good thing. Proponents say square dancing reduces stress, improves health, stimulates the mind and introduces you to new friends while providing a great time. It’s a low-impact route to fitness and it’s a weight-bearing exercise that’s known to increase blood flow and lung capacity. It also improves balance and coordination, mental ability and reduces stress and age-related memory loss. You’ll also meet new friends while square dancing, and have fun. Contact the Surrey Square Wheelers or Surrey Leisure Services to find out more. Tulips for tomorrow Gardeners know it’s nearly fall, and with it comes bulb-planting season. With that in mind, the Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation has launched its sixth annual Tulips for Tomorrow campaign. All proceeds from sales of the foundation’s signature Princess Irene Tulips – those bright orange tulips with gold and purple flames – go to support the foundation’s drive to provide critical care for children.

Recent news stories about dog attacks around B.C. remind us of the need to be vigilant when approaching and interacting with our canine companions. If you’ve been bitten by a dog, chances are it was by your own pet or a neighbouring dog. But there are clear signals to watch for and steps we can all take to reduce our chances of a nasty dog bite. Play nice. By far, most children are bitten while playing with dogs. What starts out as fun can lead to overexcitement, and because dogs use their mouths and teeth to grab in the same way we use our hands, accidental bites can occur when dogs get over stimulated. When dogs roughhouse with one another they have thick fur to protect themselves – but we have thin skin. The solution: If a dog is getting over-excited, call a “time out” and walk away until he or she is calmer. If the dog is prone is overstimulation, play fetch instead of chase or tug-of-war games.

you — never try to hug them, crowd or corner them, sneak up on them or pick them up if they are giving you signals that they are frightened. If they are showing clear signals of fear back away slowly – if you turn and run you are more likely to get bitten.

Leave the Lonely Alone. Seeing a lonely dog by himself in a backyard – or worse, tied to a chain – can touch our hearts and make us want to reach out to offer our companionship. But backyard dogs can be unsocialized and fearful. In particular, chained dogs, may bite if their “fight or flight” response kicks in and they have no means of escape. Their tail may be wagging – but not all tail wagging is friendly – it can also be a warning sign. The solution: Don’t reach through a fence to pet a strange dog or approach a dog on a chain – ever! DO report chained or neglected backyard dogs to your local SPCA. When approaching dogs, always ask permission from their guardian before petting, approach from the side rather than leaning over top of a dog’s head (a sign of aggression in dog-dog communication) and hold out an open palm for the dog to sniff before petting.

Give an anxious dog space. Fearful or anxious dogs are the most likely to bite without warning – they are unsure of new situations and act out of self-preservation and fear rather than aggression. Their signals can include a lowered head, tail low or between their legs, lip licking and ears folded back. They may appear sad and scared, but can quickly snap if they feel cornered and unable to escape. The solution: Be calm and confident around anxious dogs. Let them come to
If a strange dog approaches you in a menacing manner – don’t scream or run away, this will only escalate the situation. The best approach is to stand still with your hands at your side, looking slightly away from the dog. If the dog attacks, lie on your stomach with your face buried and your hands behind your neck. The stiller you can be the sooner the dog will stop and move on. For more information on dog bite safety, visit spca.bc.ca/animalissues.

Beware of the protector. Many dogs have a tendency to protect things they value – their toys, food or beds. They will usually give you clear signals that they are in “protector mode” – hunching over a food bowl or toy, emitting low growls and barring their teeth. The Solution: Never put your hand – or worse your face — near a dog in protection mode or try to remove the object. If this protection behaviour continues, seek some training or behavioural counselling for your pet.

Neighbourly Community spirit is alive and thriving, says the president of a local community association that put on a “good old fashioned community party” at a neighbourhood park over the Labour Day weekend. Debbie Lawrence of the East Panorama Ridge Community Association says about 80 residents joined in the fun and frivolity at the event, noshing on free food, winning door prizes (over 40 items were donated by local businesses), and taking in an outdoor movie, A Dolphin Tale, presented by Fresh Air Cinema. The event – organized just for the fun of it – drew a “completely diverse group of community members” from all ages and all walks of life, said Lawrence who describes her neighbourhood as a Surrey community rooted in good old fashioned caring and sharing. – Cloverdale Reporter

Field to table Long before there was Costco, Safeway, or the friendly, neighbourhood corner store, Surrey’s pioneers looked to their gardens for the food they needed to sustain themselves and their families. The kitchen garden was a vital source of fresh veggies and fruits for meals, home baking, canning and preserving, as well as home remedies. Fast forward to today, and you’ll discover some of those same connections between the garden and the table remain in place today. From Field to Table: The Pioneer Kitchen Garden Revival, the feature exhibit at the Historic Stewart Farm, is a timely celebration of food origins, from pioneer days to the present. It runs Sept. 15 and runs to Nov. 3. Opening day features a host of food-related activities at the historic farm, located at 13723 Crescent Road, running from noon to 4 p.m. Along with a display of apple varieties, heritage apple and pear
will be put into service, allowing visitors to watch apple juice being made. Explore the pole barn, home to the Advance-Rumely threshing machine and new interpretive displays on Surrey’s agricultural history, or try kid-friendly hands-on activities and crafts, or take a guided tour of the 1890s farmhouse and grounds. Later this month,
Stewart Farm hosts From Field to Table, a program running from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27. Chef Ryan from White Rock’s Uli’s Restaurant will be on hand, exploring a menu plan using local food, sharing local wines, and even table decorating tips. It’s open to ages 16 and up. The cost is $35. Kids are invited to tour the From Field to Table exhibit at Veggie Fables, Saturday, Oct. 13 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Fee is $10. For ages 6 to 9 years. Pre-register at 604-592-6956. From Field to Table, the Pioneer Kitchen Garden Revival runs Sept. 15 to Nov. 3. Open Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. Entrance by donation.
