Dana Juba looks at a photo from Buckingham elementary school’s class of 1964-65. She attended the school in the late 1960s and her three children went there from 1994-2008. The school is celebrating its 50th anniversary on Sept. 29.

When Dana Juba was a student at Burnaby’s Buckingham elementary in the late 1960s and early ’70s, there was a farm with cows and horses off Burris Street and Canada Way. The site of the No. 1 fire hall at Sperling Avenue and Canada Way was home to a barn and horse trails where she took riding lessons. Moms were mostly of the stay-athome variety, and just about all her

classmates only spoke English. By the time her own three children finished attending Buckingham, the last in 2008, the neighbourhood was quite a different place. But through it all, she said, the school’s sense of community remained. On Saturday, Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., that community will be celebrated at Buckingham as it celebrates its 50th anniversary. Back in 1967, when Juba started Grade 3, the gym was only half the size it is now, and the changing

In class, when she finished all her work, she would routinely help tutor classmates, a mentoring program that helped both tutors and students. On the playground in the spring, Grade 7 students would organize baseball games with students of all ages, which also helped create a more cohesive school community, she said. As one of the smaller schools in Burnaby, it was a tight-knit group of students, with Juba still hanging out with friends from elementary school today. She knows of several other Buckingham alumni who, like her, had children who attended the same school. Please see MANY CHANGES, A3

The Multisport Centre of Excellence has a new name, a new director of sport medicine and soon, a new building. Construction on the project next to Burnaby Lake Sports Complex in the Central Valley is expected to be complete by January and ready for opening in the spring of 2013, it was announced Wednesday. It will now be known as Fortius Sport & Health, Latin for “strong” or “stronger.” Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan said it was an apt name. “The name is absolutely perfect because when you’re developing something that is so strong, and you develop an organization like Fortius, it requires a struggle,” he said. “And that is what it’s really all about, it’s about the struggle, the development of the strength to form something that becomes incredibly important. And no one knows better about the importance of the struggle than athletes do.” see ‘ON THE CUSP’, A3

When complete, the $61-million centre will be the first fully-integrated facility in Canada to bring together expertise, programs and services focused on sport medicine, science and training. The 148,000-squarefoot building will house world-class sport medicine and rehabilitation facilities, a strength and conditioning centre, gyms, labs, office space, an athlete’s village and sportrelated retail outlets. Times have changed, of course. Today, there are more students with English-as-a-second-language (ESL) or special needs. Celebrations of multiculturalism and diversity are now common. But it continues to offer a semblance of stability. Juba noted the school had the same secretary for 16 years. Laurel Gurnsey, another of the event organizers, taught at Buckingham for 19 years before retiring in 2004. She recalled there were 13 teachers there who, at one point, went upwards of eight years without transferring to another school. As for demographics, she said her first year at Buckingham in 1985-1986, she had no ESL students but by the time she left, half her class was ESL. With a strong ESL program, those students are now quickly integrating into the school community. Gurnsey noted that it’s the sort of school where she became personal friends with parents and former students, and where she continues to stay involved, volunteering to run its gardening club. “It’s not an official community school but it feels like one.” • The 50th anniversary celebration will offer a chance for former students, staff and teachers to catch up and celebrate the memories. It’s a ticketed event, costing $10 for those 13 and older, $5 for ages four to 12, and free for those three and under. The cost includes a program filled with five decades of nostalgia, a hot dog lunch, muffins and coffee. Any leftover money will be contributed towards new playground equipment being purchased by the parents advisory committee. For more details and to order tickets, visit buckingham.sd41.bc.ca or call the school at 604-664-8616.

Cyclist killed at train crossing Bank robber nabbed

Burnaby RCMP are reminding pedestrians and cyclists to avoid train tracks after a woman was struck and killed by a train last week. On Sept. 6, at about 4:45 p.m., Burnaby RCMP were called to the area of Cariboo Road and Government Street after a report of a someone being hit by a train. A 30-year-old woman was pushing her bicycle while walking along the tracks when a passenger train rounded a bend, striking her from behind and killing her. Police continue to investigate to determine the sequence of event before the accident. “All railway property in Canada is considered private property,” said Cpl. Rick Skolrood of Burnaby RCMP, in a press release. “For their own safety, people should only cross at designated crossings and avoid using railway tracks as shortcuts.” Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is asked to contact Burnaby RCMP at 604-294-7922.

One male is in custody after being caught and held following a traffic accident in North Burnaby Monday morning. Turns out he, and another male suspect still at large, were in a rush because they’d just robbed a bank, say Burnaby RCMP. Just before 11 a.m. on Sept. 10, a lone male entered the TD Bank near Willingdon Avenue and Lougheed Highway. He produced a handgun, ordered customers and bank staff around, and demanded money, eventually fleeing with a quantity of cash. Unbeknownst to him, police officers from the Integrated Road Safety Unit happened to stop the bank where they watched through the window as the robbery took place. They reported the robbery to dispatchers moments before the suspect ran out the back door and jumped into a waiting stolen Honda Accord being driven by another male suspect. A Burnaby RCMP officer saw the car driving away and gave

chase for a short while before he lost sight of the vehicle. The stolen car was then involved in a minor crash with a rented U-Haul van near Esmond Avenue and Pender Street during which the bumpers of the two vehicles became locked together. When the two suspects ran from the accident scene, the two men in the van gave chase. They eventually caught one suspect and held him for police, thinking only that they were trying to flee from the scene of an accident. The suspect arrested is being treated in Burnaby Hospital for minor injuries sustained during his capture and for symptoms of drug withdrawal. The second suspect remains at large. Police are looking for a male wearing camouflage pants last seen near Boundary Road and East Pender Street in Burnaby. Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to call Burnaby RCMP at 604-2947922. wchow@burnabynewsleader.com

Opposition to Burnaby-North Van riding on both sides of inlet: MP

wchow@burnabynewsleader.com

It appears people on both sides of Burrard Inlet don’t like the idea of a North BurnabySeymour federal riding. Burnaby-Douglas NDP MP Kennedy Stewart commissioned a telephone poll of residents in the affected area of North Vancouver and found that 79 per cent of those with an opinion opposed the proposal. The Electoral Boundaries Commission of B.C. has proposed the riding spanning parts of the two cities in its once-every-10-years redistribution of electoral districts to factor in the most recent population numbers. In Stewart’s poll, of 7,775 North Vancouver households contacted, 1,007 participated with 16 per cent supporting the proposal, 60 per cent opposed and 23 per cent undecided. When the undecideds are taken out of the equation, those opposed account for 79 per cent of those with an opinion. Stewart also attended the

Burnaby ridings, Stewart added. After the controversy caused by media reports of one commission member, Stewart Ladyman, suggesting North Burnaby-Seymour was a done deal (comments he told the NewsLeader were taken out of context), commission members appeared quite open to listening to speakers, Stewart said. “I do feel that the commission is open to making changes.” The Burnaby-Douglas MP believes the proposal was made purely from a numbers standpoint and the hearings will be a chance for the commission to find out how such a riding would work. As Stewart told the commission Monday, it wouldn’t function very well. While MPs in ridings that are rural and spread out geographically get extra funding from the federal government to open more than one constituency office to serve residents, those in urban ridings don’t. Burnaby residents’ next chance to participate in a commission public hearing will be Oct. 18, 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express Metrotown.

commission’s first public hearing on its proposals held in North Vancouver on Monday, where the speakers’ focus was split between the North Burnaby-Seymour riding and one that would combine Powell River with Vancouver Island North. Of those speaking about North Burnaby-Seymour, only one was in support, Stewart said, with the rest stating the two communities simply don’t fit together. He noted that a potential solution was suggested by some speakers: add Sechelt, Powell River and other Sunshine Coast communities to the Vancouver Island North riding, combine the Sea-to-Sky Highway communities with part of North Van city, and create another riding with North Van district and the reminder of North Van city. “That would alleviate the pressure to come across Burrard Inlet. It actually really worked quite well at the meeting that the two groups were there.” And if Burnaby-Douglas has too many people, small parts of it could be redistributed into one of the other proposed new

ADRIAN RAESIDE:

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:

Who do you run for? After 31 years and millions of dollars raised, you might think the Terry Fox Run would have run out of steam. In fact, the flame that Canadian hero Terry Fox lit more than 30 years ago with his ill-fated national run burns just as brightly, thanks to the continued commitment of volunteers, schools and run supporters from all over the world. It would be easy to give the Terry Fox Run a pass on Sunday. It might rain. Other things will compete for your time. Maybe you’re not as inspired as you once were. Further, with Betty Fox’s passing, fewer Fox family members are able to rally the troops. But then there is this: Everyone is touched by cancer and research saves lives. Although two out of five Canadians is expected to develop cancer, only one of every four Canadians will die from it. Cancer is the leading cause of premature death and funds raised by the Terry Fox Foundation goes to important research that will reduce those statistics. There is also this: More than a million people who don’t even live in Terry’s home nation will run to support the foundation in the coming days. If they can do it, so can we. This weekend, take some time and join a local run: the New Westminster run has registration in the food court at the River Market starting at 9 a.m., and the run will start from the Market at 10 a.m.. In Burnaby, the run is at Swangard Stadium. Registration begins at 9 a.m., ceremonies an hour later and the run commences at 10:20 a.m. Taking part — running, walking, cycling, inline skating — is a way of honouring our hometown hero while also endeavouring to put an end to a disease that strikes so many people, many of them, like Terry, simply too young to die. This year, who will you be running for? —Black Press

It was a September to Remember Sept. 28, 1972. A date I don’t necessarily recall offhand. However, it is a day I do remember. Vividly. For most young Canadian hockey fans the seminal moment in which they will remember where they were for the rest of their lives came on Feb. 28, 2010. I won’t forget that one either. I was fortunate to be in the building covering the game for Black Press when Sidney Crosby scored the golden goal against the United States. But for my generation it was Paul Henderson scoring the winner in the dying seconds of the 1972 Summit Series. That summer all the talk leading up to the eight-game series was about how it was going to be a walk in the park for Canada. It was easy for a 16-year-old to buy into the hype. Every time the Olympics rolled around, Canadians were told Canada was at a distinct disadvantage because professionals weren’t allowed to participate. Those dastardly

Soviets wouldn’t have a chance if Canada could ice the National Hockey League’s best players, we said to ourselves. It was our version of the Cold War. If given a chance our pros would demolish their so-called amateurs. Then Game 1 in Montreal rolled around. Two quick goals for Canada and the party was on. Or so we thought. Our puffedout chests were promptly deflated as the much-fitter, and highly skilled (although we were loathe to admit it) Soviets took over and romped to a 7-3 victory. The next day we went to our aunt’s place in Surrey for a family gathering. My father’s cousin declared the Soviets were going to win.

What! That’s anti-Canadian. How could he say that? Well, Stan was far from being a traitor. He was worldly, though. As an RCMP officer posted to the Canadian embassy in Rome, he was one of the few Canadians who wasn’t so parochial as to believe the only hockey nation in the world was Canada. Despite the Game 1 thrashing, I believed Canada would prevail, mostly because the word was superstar defenceman Bobby Orr would heal his wobbly knees in time to save the day. In my thinking, there was no way the Soviets would be able to handle Orr’s wizardry. So when Stan said, “I’ll bet you $5 the Soviets win” I took him up on it. As the series marched across Canada—a 4-1 win for Canada in Toronto, a 4-4 tie in Winnipeg and a 5-3 Soviet triumph in Vancouver—the tension mounted and my angst grew. As a teenager just starting Grade 12 making $1.25 an hour delivering prescriptions by bike for Royal Oak Drugs,

I was worried about losing $5, to say nothing of my pride. My concerns multiplied during the fifth game in Moscow when Canada blew a 3-0 lead heading into the third period and lost 5-4. But then Henderson scored the winning goals in both the sixth and seventh games. The country was abuzz. With the series tied and one game left Game 8 was must-see TV. One problem, it was to be played on a weekday morning during school hours. Being a goodygoody, naively proud of my attendance record, I couldn’t bring myself to skip school. But I did violate school rules by taking a transistor radio with earphones to listen to the game during my classes at Burnaby South. By the time my third period rolled around, Math 12, Canada was down 5-3. It was difficult dealing with algebraic equations as well as the possible catastrophic consequences to the country’s ego. COMMENT

EMAIL letters@burnabynewsleader.com

Elections should not be played with stacked deck There have been a number of reports and comments about the proposed new federal electoral boundaries as they would affect Burnaby. Permit me a different perspective on the issue. An analysis by PollMaps.ca has found that the changes would result in a province-wide gain of eight seats for the Conservatives and a loss of two for the NDP, based on the 2011 vote. Other party standings would stay the same. Would this be a fair outcome? Currently the Conservatives, with 46% of the province-wide vote, have 58.3 per cent of the seats (21 out of 36). The NDP with 32.5 per cent of the vote has 33.3 per cent of the seats (12 out of 36). If the election had been run under the proposed new boundaries—without changing a single vote—the totals would have been Conservatives 69 per cent of the seats (29 out of 42), and NDP 23.8 per cent of the seats (10 out of 42), according to the study. One might expect that dividing the province into a larger number of ridings, using an impartial

methodology, would produce a result closer to, not farther from, the actual popular vote—yet these new boundaries would give us the very opposite. When a supposedly impartial process generates such a skewed result, one may question whether there is some inherent bias in the process itself. Something does not seem right. This redistribution would have produced a much less democratic outcome. Elections should not be played with a stacked deck. That’s not fair to British Columbia. Glen Porter Burnaby

‘UNSUPPORTED DATA’ UNDERMINES COLUMN I read Tom Fletcher’s opinion piece (Separating oil from manure, NewsLeader, Sept. 5) with some chagrin, not for the opinions expressed, but for the journalism displayed. We all have opinions, and most cause someone else to disagree. I disagree with Mr. Fletcher on the Northern Gateway Pipeline, but I don’t begrudge his opinion.

Differences of opinion make conversations interesting; that’s why we have opinion pages in newspapers. However, for those conversations to be useful, we have to agree on some facts— ideally, factual information is the common ground around which we can compare opinions. In the Internet Age, “facts” are cheap and plentiful, but vary wildly in their veracity. I’m not a professional journalist, but I understood their job to include assuring information they present is truthful. The public relies on professional journalists to sift through the available facts, and provide meaningful context. In this way, journalists increase readers’ understanding, and may even offer compelling opinions. When Mr. Fletcher based his argument around data on oil inputs into the world’s oceans, he might have spent a bit of time finding the source of those “facts.” Instead of taking a B.C.

Government or oil industry press release at face value, he should have done some journalism. Turns out the numbers quoted are not from a “global study by the Smithsonian Institution” as Mr. Fletcher claims, but from a travelling display sponsored by the Smithsonian. That display cites an NRC study done in 1985 (“Oil in the Sea: Inputs, Fates and Effects”). Google it, and you will find the study is available online. Problem is, the study numbers are significantly different than the Smithsonian numbers, are almost 30 years old, and have been thoroughly revised by a 2005 NRC study (also available online). For lack of five minutes on Google, Mr. Fletcher’s entire argument is undermined by use of terrible, unsupported data. I can excuse his subsequent ad hominem (Robert Redford!), false dichotomy and use of hyperbole—those are normal parts of “opinion making” in a world where logical fallacies are no longer taught in school. But lazy journalism—running

fast and loose with the “facts,” assuming your reader will not follow up—that causes me chagrin for the profession of journalism. Especially when presented under a title like “Separating oil from manure.” But what do I know? I’m just an amateur blogger, not a professional journalist. Patrick Johnstone New Westminster

INSPIRING WOMAN Re: Back to school a family affair (NewsLeader, Sept. 7) I think it’s wonderful that the woman from India along with her family is going back to school. She’s only been here in Canada for a year and wants to upgrade on her English. It’s too bad that her husband’s medical degree isn’t recognized in Canada, even though they recognize the medical degree in the U.S. It’s also disheartening when a bachelor of arts isn’t recognized in Canada. It takes that much longer to redo a degree. Daryl Shim Burnaby

A Burnaby Mountain secondary student was among members of a team that brought home a second place win at the Heart of Europe Debating Tournament held in Olomouc, Czech Republic recently. The tournament was originally a competition for high school students of European countries, but it now fields teams from around the world. Team Canada was led by coach Frankie Cena of Burnaby, and included students from Burnaby, Vancouver and Coquitlam— Grade 11 Burnaby Mountain secondary student Jamal Dumas, Sonam Rai and Dena Tabyanian. While considered the underdog, the team advanced through several elimination rounds to face the team from Singapore in the finals, eventually securing a second place finish after a close contest.

Burnaby is marking the city’s 120th birthday with two weeks of free family activities and workshops supported by a $75,000-grant from the provincial Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. The offerings aim to celebrate community, arts, culture and sport in the city, which turns 120 on Sept. 22. Festivities run Sept. 15 to 30, and start with a kickoff event and paving stone ceremony at Burnaby city hall on Saturday, 12:30 to 3 p.m. Other events include a birthday celebration on Sept. 23, 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Civic Square and Bob Prittie Metrotown library, Jersey Day on Sept. 28 when people are invited to wear their favourite sports jerseys while taking in free recreational activities, and Culture Days at Deer Lake Park from Sept. 28 to 30. “Burnaby’s central location and natural beauty led to its early popularity as a destination, and to its Sept. 22, 1892 incorporation,” said Mayor Derek Corrigan. “But it’s Burnaby’s citizens – the thousands of people who have chosen to make this beautiful city their home – that have infused our city with the character, culture and diversity that make it one of the world’s most attractive cities today.” For details and a full schedule of events, visit burnaby.ca/celebrate120.

All of a sudden there was hope when Phil Esposito scored to make it 5-4. Math class couldn’t get over fast enough. I desperately wanted to ditch the radio so I could watch it on television. Finally, the lunch bell mercifully rung. God bless Mrs. Robinson. Our band teacher, Lynn Robinson, had brought her big, woodencased Electrohome television from home. I made a mad dash from the second floor of the Annex to the band room at the other end of the school grounds, cursing myself for not having the guts to skip English and Math. When I got there it was standing room only, and Yvan Cournoyer was about to make it 5-5. Just as it appeared we’d have to settle for the disappointment of a tie, Henderson came out of the corner to bang the puck past Soviet goaltender Vladislav Tretiak. Everyone leapt to their feet. Victory was ours. Barely. A month previous, our expectation was domination. That didn’t matter now. Our cheering was more beautiful to the ears than any music produced by the band. A few weeks later we were out for dinner with Stan’s family. He opened his wallet and said, “I’ve never been more happy to pay someone $5.” I was never more happy to take it either. The Summit Series has been rightfully dubbed A September to Remember. Especially Sept. 28.

Firm retracts whooping cough remedy claim Fraser Health said vaccination drive was undercut Jeff Nagel

jnagel@blackpress.ca

A Port Coquitlam firm that claimed its oil of oregano product is an effective alternative to the whooping cough vaccine has apologized for misleading the public after the Fraser Health Authority ordered a correction. Enerex Botanicals Ltd. published the retraction in Vancouver daily newspapers but did not go as far as chief medical health officer Dr. Paul Van Buynder wished. “I am disappointed that the company has not taken the additional step of recommending vaccination to prevent the transmission of whooping cough,” he said, calling it the best protection against the illness, also known as pertussis. “We continue to see new cases of whooping cough in Fraser Health and are concerned that we may see an increase now that

kids are back in school.” Fraser Health said Enerex did comply with Van Buynder’s directive under the Public Health Act to correct the misinformation in a previously published advertisement, which showed oil of oregano alongside a broken syringe and read: “The natural way to help combat whooping cough... It’s nice to know vaccines aren’t the only choice to combat this disease.” Fraser Health has experienced a significant whooping cough outbreak over the past year and public health officials say some parents’ unfounded opposition to vaccine use can worsen the spread. In his letter to Enerex, Van Buynder said the firm created a health hazard because the ad was likely to discourage vaccination and hamper efforts to fight the outbreak, putting small children at risk of hospitalization or even death. Van Buynder said many natural products and behaviours can enhance a person’s ability to fight and resist infections and disease, including eating well and getting enough sleep

and exercise, but said they can’t prevent disease transmission. The firm said it did not intend to infer oil of oregano is as effective as vaccination against whooping cough, but maintained the product has “antibacterial and antiviral properties” and characterized the incident as a “misunderstanding.” Van Buynder, his counterpart at Vancouver Coastal Health and B.C.’s provincial health officer have also urged Health Canada to investigate the incident as a potential violation of federal legislation governing health advertising. As of Sept. 5, there have been 328 confirmed and suspected cases of whooping cough in the Fraser Health region since the outbreak began in the HopeChilliwack area last December. There were 23 new cases in the last four weeks and there have been no fatalities to date. All adults in regular contact with young children are urged to get the free whooping cough vaccine via a doctor or participating pharmacist. twitter.com/jeffnagel

Burnaby RCMP warn of possible scam artist Burnaby RCMP is warning people of a possible scam artist at work after receiving a complaint Sept. 11 of someone cold-calling people in Burnaby trying to gain access to personal financial information. “This particular fraudster will claim to represent a real charity and then ask for credit card information for donation purposes,” said Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Rick Skolrood. Const. Linda Reinhart of the Burnaby RCMP’s economic crime unit noted

that fraudsters often use legitimate organizations as a cover. “Fraudsters often claim to represent legitimate companies and organizations and may have personal information about you which they have obtained by illegal means,” she said. “Our recommendation is to never give out personal information to people who call you out of the blue.” Burnaby Mounties are hosting several fraud prevention seminars which aim to help seniors avoid becoming

victims: Tuesday, Sept. 18, 1 p.m. at Confederation Recreation Complex; Tuesday, Oct. 2, 1:30 p.m. at Bonsor Recreation Complex; and Thursday, Oct. 11, 11 a.m. at Edmonds Community Centre.

Crash witnesses sought Police are seeking witnesses to a crash on the freeway in Burnaby Saturday night. On Sept. 8 at about 9:30 p.m. a red Subaru Forester was changing lanes or merging into traffic in front of a grey Dodge Magnum when a collision occurred. The two vehicles pulled over to the right side of Highway 1, within the construction zone, about 100 metres west of the Kensington overpass. Police are asking any witnesses to the crash or what happened after the collision to call Port Mann Freeway Patrol at 604-526-9744 .

Map shows location of B.C. shale gas formations and “early conceptual routes” for the proposed pipeline.

New pipeline to feed LNG exports Tom Fletcher

tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Two months after opening its newest natural gas processing plant near Dawson Creek, Spectra Energy has announced a partnership that will more than double its B.C. capacity with a large-scale pipeline to Prince Rupert. Texas-based Spectra and British Gas (BG) Group plc announced Monday a development agreement to construct an 850-km largediameter pipeline connecting its hub of operations near Fort St. John with proposed liquefied natural gas facilities near Prince Rupert. The pipeline would connect vast shale gas resources in the Montney formation near Fort St. John and the Liard, Horn

River and Cordova Embayment shales near Fort Nelson. Its capacity of 4.2 million cubic feet per day compares to Spectra’s existing gas handling capacity of 2.4 million cubic feet per day. BG Group has optioned an 80-hectare site in the Ridley industrial area owned by the Prince Rupert Port Authority for a possible liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility. Operating gas production facilities in 20 countries, BG is currently building a new LNG plant in Australia. The joint announcement, the companies said “early conceptual routes” have been developed, with consultation planned for affected routes. The project timeline is to begin construction by 2015 and

complete the pipeline by 2020. Spectra’s B.C. operations started as Westcoast Transmission Corp. with construction of B.C.’s first gas processing plant on the Peace River at Taylor in 1949. It still operates that plant, and pipeline network that supplies natural gas to the B.C. Lower Mainland. Premier Christy Clark and Energy Minister Rich Coleman attended opening ceremonies in July for Spectra’s new Dawson Processing Plant. Doug Bloom, president of Spectra Energy Transmission West, said at that time the company was near completion of its $1.5 billion B.C. investment program, with another $4-6 billion to be invested after 2015. twitter.com/tomfletcherbc

Mythologies and folklore the world over feature wishing trees, trees of life, sacred groves and beliefs in sympathetic relationships between humans and trees, like the planting of a tree to commemorate the birth of a child and the subsequent tending of the tree in the belief that this will help the child to grow strong. From Tolkien’s Treebeard to the Ewoks in Star Wars, these ancient thoughts creep through our modern psyche. Visitors to the Deer Lake Gallery often sit on the Zen deck and view, ponder and commune with a special tree in the backyard. NHL 13 launch Hundred of hockey fans flocked to EB Games in Metropolis at Metrotown on Monday to be among the first to access one of the most anticipated sports video games of the year. At the stroke of midnight, EA Sports launched NHL 13 with our own Vancouver Canucks captain Henrik Sedin, who is also featured in the game. Sedin offered media interviews, and autographs to die-hard fans, and told the NewsLeader that the Canucks have a game console set up in the locker room and that the teammates often play in their down time. His favourite new feature is the True Performance Skating which adds physics-driven skating to over 1,000 new animations making the game more realistic than ever.

The bonus was getting Sedin’s autograph! 3 Shauni Karbowiak (L) waited with her brother Jonathon and friend Victoria Hayter (R). 4 Fans brought memorabilia, jerseys, sticks and posters for Sedin to sign. 5 EA’s Andy Agostini, Matt Wong and Patrick King, join Sedin at the table.

Housekeeping for Homeowners. Like most British Columbians, your home is likely your most precious investment, but keeping it protected with simple home maintenance often falls behind a busy lifestyle and other priorities. Yet basic home maintenance does not require a lot of specialized skills or know-how, is very cost effective and an excellent approach to protection against an unexpected crisis and costs. Here we share some important tips to keep your home and family safe. • Prevent the possibility of a fire hazard by keeping the dryer vent clean. Clean the lint filter every time you run your dryer and once a year slide the vent out and remove any lint build up. • Run an energy efficient furnace by replacing filters at least every three months, especially for proper operation over winter. Dirty filters block airflow, lowering air quality and making it potentially dangerous to your family’s health. They also cause furnaces to work overtime, increasing energy bills and eventually to overheat, burn out and be replaced. • Prevent mold by monitoring your home for condensation. Too much moisture indoors eventually poses a health risk, and left untreated will rot woodwork. Examine your windows, checking for cracks or breaks in the seals that can easily be fixed.

HOME INSURANCE WITH

ZlATA STUMP

• Guard against water damage by looking for signs of dripping and corrosion on exposed pipes around toilets, sinks and appliances. Leaking fixtures can often be fixed with simple replacement parts like O-rings, cartridges or flappers for leaky toilets. Leaks are easy to miss, but early repair avoids costly water damage. • Make sure your gutters are clean and water run-off is unobstructed. At least once a year physically remove debris and build-up from your gutters and ensure your downpipes are clear. Blocked gutters and pipes can force water to back up and soak into the roof, walls, and even the foundation. Basic upkeep of your home protects your investment and safeguards your family. And it’s easy enough to do yourself with an idea of what to look for and why. If you want to learn more about BCAA Home Insurance and how you can protect your home and valuables, contact a BCAA Insurance Specialist who will be happy to assist you. Clan mauled by Wildcats

MARIO BARTEL/NEWSLEADER

SFU Clan receiver Lemar Durant, of Coquitlam, pulls down a pass just out of the reach of Central Washington defender Cedrique Chaney for the Clan’s first touchdown of their home opener Saturday at Terry Fox Field. The Clan lost the game 56-28.

For the SFU Clan football team, it seems membership doesn’t have its privileges. The Clan, who were granted full NCAA membership in the summer after two seasons of play as provisional members, dropped their home opener 56-28 to the Central Washington University Wildcats Saturday at Terry Fox Field. After staying close to the Wildcats through the first half to trail 21-14 at the break, the Clan surrendered 35 points in the second half while scoring only 14 more of their own. “They were the better team today,” said SFU quarterback Trey Wheeler in a release. “We need to be better in

practice this week. We need to have a higher level of intensity.” There were glimmers of hope. Wheeler completed 28 of his 36 pass attempts for 285 years, while receiver Lemar Durant pulled down 10 catches for 114 yards and one touchdown. The Wildcats opened the scoring midway through the first quarter on an 18 yard pass play from quarterback Ryan Robertson to Tavoy Moore. The Clan answered late in the period when Wheeler found Durant with a 20-yard bullet to the right side of the end zone. The loss drops the Clan to 1-1. They travel to Arcata, CA to play Humboldt State on Saturday.

Finding an oasis of calm in South Surrey

Live naturally at Wills Creek Take advantage of a natural lifestyle at Wills Creek, by EMAAR Canada. EMAAR is currently selling the seventh and eighth phases of Wills Creek. Eight units were sold last week, demonstrating the popularity of these amazing homes. With features like custom-designed Shaker-style cabinetry complemented by a handset textured natural stone backsplash and polished granite countertops in the kitchen, there are plenty of things to love at Wills Creek. The townhomes range from 2,400 to 4,400 square feet, so there is no shortage of space. Many homes include 10-foot vaulted ceilings on the main level, and

tons of natural light pours through the large windows. The ensuite bathroom is gorgeous, with an oversized soaker tub with a marble deck (perfect for holding your glass of wine), a frameless glass walk-in shower with a rain shower head and a handset imported glass tile tub and shower surround. Buyers will be able to take advantage of all the amenities of Morgan Creek, including schools and shopping. There is also an amenity centre that includes a fitness centre, multi-purpose room, outdoor swimming pool and a hot tub. Homes start at $539,900. For more information, visit www.willscreek.ca or call 604-542-8971.

glass walk-in shower with modern tile surrounds and accents (depending on your chosen floorplan) are perfect for relaxing in after a long day. Though fall is now on its way, the air-conditioning that comes standard in every home is also a popular feature, Kwok says. Buyers are able to take possession of their new home immediately, so there will be no waiting for construction to finish. Atrium is part of the Pier masterplanned community, which includes the Pinnacle International hotel. The area is a former shipyard that now holds a seawalk, 700-foot pier and heritage buildings. Restaurants, transit, leisure activities and shopping at the Lonsdale Quay Market are all in close proximity, making The Pier a great

place for homebuyers looking to be connected to everything. Downtown Vancouver is just 15 minutes away via SeaBus, so the annoyances of a long commute can easily be washed away. “After coming home from work ... this is a totally different world, because it has the (serenity) of a resort,” says Kwok. Owners at Atrium will also have access to the amenities at the Pinnacle Hotel, including an 80-foot pool, fitness centre with a yoga studio and the hotel concierge services. The hotel also houses 8,000 square feet of meeting and banquet space. One-bedroom homes start at $399,900 and two-bedroom homes at $649,900. For more information, visit www.thepier.info or call 604-983-9065.

Atrium at Pinnacle Pier showcases quiet elegance by Kerry Vital

If it’s modern waterfront living you’re yearning for, you need look no farther than Atrium at Pinnacle Pier, located on Vancouver’s North Shore in the Lower Lonsdale area. “It’s one of the very few waterfront communities on the North Shore” says Grace Kwok of Anson Realty Ltd. “They are buying into a master-planned waterfront community.” Ranging from 654 to over 3,000 square feet, the homes at Atrium at Pinnacle Pier are spacious and open, with a custom-designed electric fireplace with granite mantle and designer carpeting. The kitchens include chic granite countertops and a porcelain tile floor, complemented

by designer cabinetry and Bosch appliances. The recessed pot lighting and pendant lighting over the breakfast bar combine to illuminate your tasks without being harsh, while the Kohler faucet in the dual stainless-steel undermount sink make cleanup easy. The nine-foot ceilings and welldesigned floorplans have proven particularly popular, Kwok says. August sales were the second lowest total for the month in the region since 1998 and 39.2 per cent below the 10-year August sales average of 2,711. “Home sales this summer have been lower than we’ve seen for most of the past 10 years, yet we continue to see relative stability when it comes to prices,” said Eugen Klein, REBGV president. This represents a 13.7 per cent decline compared to August 2011 when 4,685 properties were listed for sale on the MLS and a 15.8 per cent decline compared to the 4,802 new listings in July 2012. “For sellers it’s critical to work with your realtor to understand today’s market

and to develop the best strategy for selling your home,” Klein said. “On average it’s taking about two months for a home to sell in Greater Vancouver today.” At 17,567, the total number of residential property listings on the MLS increased 13.8 per cent from this time last year and declined 2.8 per cent compared to July 2012. “Today, our sales-to-activelistings ratio sits at nine per
