By Mark McMillan The 13th Annual Cariboo Country Night was once again an awesome evening at Watch Lake on Sept. 8. It was just plain fun. In order to raise funds for area promotion, the Watch Lake/Green Lake Resort, Guest Ranch, and Business Association put this event on every year, and every year it adds new faces to the entertainment lineup. This year Leslie Ross was the new face, and Matt Johnston returned after numerous years of not being there. Ernie Doyle is the annual crowd favourite. It was great to see Matt back and even better to hear him sing again. The audience loved him, and anyone who has heard Matt

before knows why. His song-writing abilities leave the audience in complete silence as he performs with both his guitar and his harmonica. Leslie has an amazing voice and a great long list of songs. Her beautiful guitar picking is as good to watch as it is to hear, and her song choices fit the night to a tee. I have the feeling she’ll be back. Ernie brought his big, boomin’ voice back again for the 13th consecutive time and the crowd loved it, for the 13th time in a row. Ernie picks the audience’s favourite songs and does a fine job of getting everyone to sing along. Now, put the above three together on

the same stage, clear some tables out of the middle of the dance floor, and let the fun begin. And that it did, as the dance floor was packed, and even after the great barbecue steak dinner that was served folks still showed off their energy and dancing skills. You’d have thought that these three had played together before, and had even been practising for weeks. Everything just clicked and the crowd loved them. The Bovine Bingo was a big hit again this year, with Clive French taking home an extra $595. It’s hard to believe, but Clive won this bingo last year, too. I can’t wait for next year, and the 14th Annual Cariboo Country Night.

Great weather for 108 Men’s Night By Spence Henderson Fifty-five golfers played in our third to last official Men’s Night at the 108 Golf Resort on Sept. 5. There may well be more unofficial nights, as the course is slated to remain open until Oct. 15. The big winner was Dan Hadden

and that wasn’t even on the course, as he matched cards in the 50/50 draw for a very big cash prize. Another winner was George McGibbon who won his semifinal match against Eric Ohlund. The other match between Jim Zailo and James Clancy

Thirty golfers attended Ladies Night at Marmot Ridge Golf Course on Sept. 5. Rene Zelt had the low score, while Tamara Van Loon carded the high score. Long-drive and closest-to-the-pin (KP) prizes went to Diane Matlock, Terri Livingston, Kathy Reid, Dorothy White, Leena Lautrup, Lynda Lewis, Arlene Jongbloets, Deanna Oenema and Betty Warman. Twenty-one golfers showed up for Men’s Night on Sept. 6.

Handicap division Karam Parsad shot a 34 and took first low gross, while Bruce Findlay had 31 for the low-net prize. Long-drive and KP prizes went to Parsad, Roger Hood, Tom Lavigne, and Richard Rabey.

should be played by Sept. 12, so the final can get done in time for the official crowning at the last official Men’s Night and awards dinner Sept. 19. On Sept. 5, longtime Ryder Cup captain Jim Laird led the way relegating Shane Wilkie to second best on this night. Laird shot a one over 37, including one of three deuces on the night to tune up for this year’s Ryder Cup in Williams Lake. The whole team was announced and team caps were dis-

tributed. The 108 golfers will be styling and, hopefully, can play up to their image. John McNeil, another Ryder Cup team member, was low-net winner. The second flight went to Larry Molnar for low gross, and Hadden took the low net. Greens keeper John Coulter shot his best round of the year to take second low net. Third flight was Ron Kelly won the gross-low prize and Dan McCafferty carded the low-net score.

Water main advisory Residents, businesses and other organizations that use drinking water in the municipality are being advised about upcoming annual water main flushing. The District of 100 Mile House staff has indicated it will flush the mains during the week of Sept. 17-21, and people may notice a discolouration in their water. People are advised to run their tap for two or three minutes until the water clears.

The Source happy to be in town The Source and its manager Basam Salaymeh, who emigrated to Canada from the Middle East, are new to 100 Mile. Salaymeh came to 100 Mile at the end of May and says he is proud to become member of this community. The Source is different from the old Radio Shack previously in town.

Radio Shack became The Source about nine years ago, says Salaymeh. They are located in the Coach House Square and are open Monday through Thursday and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Phone 250395-1371 for more information.

Children protected from sexual deviants Last month, Justice Minister and Attorney General of Canada Rob Nicholson, accompanied by Canadian Centre for Abuse Awareness CEO Ellen Campbell and other stakeholders, announced the coming into force of the protection of children from sexual predators’ component of the Safe Streets and Communities Act (Bill C-10). “The sexual exploitation of children is a heinous crime that causes irreparable harm to the youngest and the most vulnerable members of our society,” said Nicholson. “Our government is sending a clear message to the dangerous sexual predators that prey on our children: from now on you will serve jail time.” Campbell, who spoke on behalf of victims, commented on the great need for

and timely enforcement of this particular component. She noted the increasing number of crimes against children and congratulated Nicholson on the government’s tough approach to protect children. This component of the Safe Streets and Communities Act will: • Establish mandatory prison sentences for seven existing Criminal Code offences, such as luring a child, sexual assault and aggravated assault. As a result, conditional sentences (i.e. house arrest) will no longer be available for any of these offences. • Increase mandatory prison sentences for nine sexual offences involving child victims, such as possessing, making, accessing or distributing child pornography and

sexual exploitation. • Increase maximum penalties for four child sexual offences, including increasing from five to 10 years the indictable offence of a parent or guardian procuring their child for illegal sexual activity when the child is less than 16 years old. • Create two new offences with mandatory prison sentences that seek to prevent the sexual exploitation of children by making it illegal for anyone to provide sexually explicit material to a child for the purpose of

facilitating the commission of a sexual offence against a child (this process is often referred to as “grooming”), or the use of telecommunications, including the Internet, to communicate with another person to agree or make arrangements to commit a sexual offence against a child. • Require judges to consider prohibiting suspected or convicted sexual predators from having any unsupervised contact with a child under the age of 16 or any unsupervised use of the Internet

or other digital network. The Safe Streets and Communities Act received Royal Assent on March 13, 2012. An online version of the legislation can be found at www. parl.gc.ca.

FOR OUR KIDS this year

250-395-4017

No two kids are alike. That’s what makes teaching both a challenge and a joy. It’s also why each student needs – and deserves – more of our time. Teachers will be working hard to give them that time. And together with parents, we’ll be urging government to help. Years of cuts have led to overcrowded classes. Our kids desperately need smaller classes, better support for students with special needs, and more one-on-one time. Every child matters. And every year counts.

Smaller classes, better support for kids with special needs, and more one-on-one time. THAT’S WHAT OUR STUDENTS DESERVE.
