E-coli shuts down Blind Bay beaches By Barb Brouwer MARKET NEWS STAFF

A huge and sudden spike in e-coli has closed two Blind Bay beaches to swimming and the most likely cause is goose feces. “That’s most likely the cause, but the e-coli we measure for isn’t speciated so we don’t know if it’s human or animal,” said Jen Jacobsen, Interior Health Health Protection

team leader, noting officials also don’t know if this is a type of e-coli that can make people sick. Goose poop has fouled the water because geese are congregating in the bay, preparing for the annual liftoff to warmer climes. “We usually do see more of them at this time of year and we know it’s one of the places they like to hang out. And they produce a lot of drop-

“There are other reasons (for the high e-coli reading), including the sampler may have disturbed the sediment on the bottom of the lake.” Whether or not the test sample was contaminated by the mucky lake bottom, Jacobsen says IH recommended the beaches be closed to

pings that get into the water,” Jacobsen says. “We’ve been sampling all summer and this is the first reading of over 100 we’ve had.” E-coli is measured by the number of colony forming units per 100 mL of water. “We start to look at closures when levels are above 400 for a single sample, and the one we got last Friday was 3,000,” Jacobsen says.

Water quality update expected today Continued from front swimmers as a precautionary measure because the numbers are so high. “They’ll grab two samples this week,” she adds, noting the health authority doesn’t order beaches closed because specific beach legislation does not exist. “It’s a discussion we have with the operators, which in this case is CSRD.” IH bases their best practice on federal guidelines for Canadian recreational water quality. Marcin Pachcinski, CSRD Parks and Recreation team leader, says it has been at least four years since e-coli

levels have been so high. The regional district responded to IH’s recommendation by posting notices of poor beach-water quality at the beaches located at 2475 and 2525 Blind Bay Rd. Pachcinski says CSRD will update their website (www.csrd. bc.ca) with any new information and will remove the signs when Interior Health informs them of improved conditions. Water is sampled weekly at these beaches, and an update is expected by no later than today, Sept. 14. While not all e-coli affects humans, Jacobsen advises that anyone who develops the symp-

toms of gastrointestinal illness – vomiting and diarrhea – should go to their doctors if they persist for more than 48 hours or if there’s blood in the stool. In very rare cases infection by e-coli can lead to more serious illnesses. “The fact it’s been good all summer and we’re seeing it peak now, to me, it’s likely a non-issue, a non-representative sample,” Jacobsen adds. “Hopefully the birds will be going soon.” Water sampling runs weekly during swimming season, which is July through early September. Following a prayer for comfort, Bowers led a rose petal ceremony in which participants released petals into Shuswap Lake. Mayor Nancy Cooper, who worked at Canadian Mental Health, thanked organizers for the putting on the event. An intensely moving touch was added by A.L. Undeterred by cold, rainy weather, some 110 people took part in a National Suicide Prevention Day at Marine Park Monday evening. “Pain, fear and despair overwhelm hope,” said organizer and member of the local suicide prevention committee Monica Kriese in her opening remarks. “Preventing suicides and supporting those who have experienced loss is what we need to do.” MC Patrick Ryley asked why people who need car repair don’t hesitate to visit a mechanic, or get a coach to teach them a new sport skill, are reluctant to address their own mental health and well-being. In a moving and impassioned description of her son Bradley’s suicide, Mary Jane Jackson pleaded for attention to the subject. “I was to realize, that unknown to his family, his teachers and his coaches, Brad had been silently fighting depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts,” she said. “I am sharing Brad’s story with the desire that mental health and suicide will be treated with the attention it desperately requires...” Jackson said society must change the culture around suicide so that the stigma of mental health is no longer “a huge burden for all who struggle. “Suicide is the second leading cause of death in youth and for every completed suicide there are at least 100 attempts,” she said. “When someone contemplates suicide they are desperate to end the emotional despair that torments them.” Certified counsellor Capreece Bowers acknowledged Mary Jane’s courage in speaking out and called suicide an issue that affects everyone. “The face of sui-

Songwriter series returns The fall series of the popular Songwriters Showcase organized by Kelly and Blu Hopkins opens Friday, Sept. 28 at SAGA Public Art Gallery. “We intend them to be interesting, entertaining and inspiring,” says Kelly, noting showcase participants write their own material and often talk about where, when and why they wrote their songs. “The intent is to showcase the amazing depth of talent in the Shuswap.” First up is John Clinch. Originally from England where he performed in rock and country bands, Clinch emigrated to Chase in 1993. In his rock and roll days, Clinch was signed to the Moody Blues’ recording company and recorded at Sir George Martin’s Air Studios in England with his country/rock band. He soon moved on to playing country music full time, performing with the legendary Albert Lee. He gave up music for a time in the ’80s, working various jobs until emigrating to B.C. Five years later, he was bitten by the bluegrass bug and with Doug and Deb Noel formed Blue Moon. During this time, he met the late Gord Milne and, together with Joany Robertson and Chris Stevens, formed the band Four Wheel Drift. This hard-driving bluegrass band featured Clinch’s songwriting and tenor singing, Milne’s vocals and blazing guitar and mandolin licks, Steven’s vocals and killer banjo playing and, backed by Robertson’s solid bass, wowed audiences throughout the region. Joining Clinch in the showcase is Carolyn Anele, a former Salmon Arm musician who preferred creating her own melodies on the old family piano to the tedious practising of scales and traditional compositions. In 2000, Anele began her career as a solo artist, promoting her original material. Her 2002 debut album, The Harbour, features seven original songs – a mixture of folk, contemporary, spiritual and instrumental music. The CD won a 2003 KADAC (Kelowna And District Arts Council) Award of Honour for a CD released in the Okanagan. Anele has since released a four-song self-titled EP, Carolyn Anele, as well as a single release called Where Birds Sing. Anele performs for charities, benefits, festivals and showcases. Her musical vision is to write songs that will inspire uplift and heal. Tickets are $10 at Acorn Music. Gourmet snacks will be served by donation.

Fun for seniors Building on the success in South Shuswap, playwright-composer Peter Blacklock is expanding his seniors theatre program to Salmon Arm. “It’s an exciting program – a ton of fun,” he laughs. “People were doing things they had never done before, stepping out of their comfort zones.” Blacklock adds Shuswap Theatre on Hudson Avenue to the slate of seniors theatre locations – the OAPO hall in Sorrento and Cedar Heights Community Hall. “This is for seniors who want to develop some skills,” Blacklock says of the program that includes drama,

performing short skits, improv, reading, theatre storytelling and a whole lot of laughter. “It widens social networks, makes contacts, enhances memorization and brain health as well as physical health.” Cost is a $10 membership to Shuswap Theatre plus a $2 dropin fee each visit. The first session runs from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2. “Come and watch because you won’t be sitting for long,” laughs Blacklock, noting activities are decided the group. “That’s usually how it works.” For more information, call Blacklock at 250-675-3004.

OPINION Caution needed at all times of year Once again, an Okanagan community is threatened by wildfire. What started out as a quiet Sunday in Peachland suddenly turned into anything but that. Evacuation alerts suddenly were posted. Residents told by police to leave their homes with barely a moment’s notice. Fire, police and emergency response officials scrambling to react to a raging forest fire emboldened with ideal burning conditions. It’s all too familiar, the Trepanier fire becoming yet another community-threatening blaze sparked in our region. Penticton’s brush with a catastrophic wildfire came in 1994, when the Garnet Valley blaze destroyed 18 homes and forced the evacuation of 3,500 people. Then, in 2003, the Okanagan Mountain Park fire tore through neighbourhoods in the Upper Mission, earning a spot in the history books as the most significant interface wildfire event in B.C. history. That was followed by the Glenrosa fire that threatened to torch that West Kelowna neighbourhood, and the Terrace Mountain blaze that sent rural residents along the westside shores of Okanagan Lake fleeing for safety. And now it’s Peachland’s turn in the second week of September, a time when one might think concern for forest fires might begin to wane. The fire season for our region starts in May and continues now, apparently, into September. That’s why we need to be thinking fire prevention all the time, evident by the scorched earth reminders all around us from those past fires. Large fires and small pose a danger to those living in this valley, enjoying a great lifestyle living on the very doorsteps of nature. But the blaze that threatened Peachland is a reminder that no matter what time of year, there is a need for constant vigilance of how we interact with the environment, if we wish to preserve that lifestyle. - Penticton Western News

Where no man has gone before In a way, travelling through space is the same as travelling through time. As we look up into the night sky, the stars we see may appear as they were hundreds of thousands of years ago. Even the light from the nearest star, Alpha Centauri, takes 4.3 years to reach planet Earth. The light reflected by our moon reaches our eyes 1.3 seconds later. I still find it a little hard to wrap my mind around the fact that some of the celestial bodies we see when we peer into the deep, dark depths of the night sky through our telescopes may have ceased to exist thousands of years ago and what we are seeing is but light travelling though time and space. The science of astronomy, however, put things into perspective. Our early human ancestors looked up at the night sky in wonder. Over time they made observations that helped guide them through their harsh, primitive world. The earliest historical records of astronomical measurements date back

THE GREAT OUTDOORS James Murray to Mesopotamia of 5,000 years ago. Observations were also made by the ancient Babylonians, Greeks and Chinese. Many of these early societies held beliefs that the affairs of man were controlled by the movement and positions of the sun, moon, stars and planets. Although astrology is more or less regarded as a pseudoscience, it was the original incentive for the mapping of the stars and assignment of names for the constellations. Astronomy today has become much more than the simply mapping of stars and planets into outlines of mythological gods and magical creatures, it is the scientific study of the contents of the entire universe

as we know it with all its stars, planets, comets, asteroids, nebulae, galaxies and unknown wonders that lie beyond. Over the past two months, we in the western hemisphere have been treated visually to a number of celestial activities including meteor showers, falling stars and glimpses of planets not often seen so clearly. As a kid, I remember laying down on the grass and looking up at the night sky above. The world took on a whole other dimension from that position. It gave me a feeling of being all alone, drifting across a vast universe filled with planets and stars. I also remember the first time I ever peered through a telescope for the first time. Not long after, my Grade 5 teacher gave me an old, rather rickety 4.5 inch reflector. It wasn’t much of a telescope but it did open up the universe to my young imagination. For those who might be interested in buying a telescope for their child, there are a number of different types of telescopes, all with

different features, applications and price tags. The three basic types of optical systems being refractors, Newtonian reflectors and catadioptric. All are designed to collect light and bring it to a focus point so that it can be magnified by an eyepiece. The purchase of a telescope depends largely on level of interest and the amount of money you want to spend. By observing the night sky with the naked eye, you really do get a true feeling of the sense of wonder the ancient astronomers must have felt as they studied it. By looking through a telescope, well, that’s a whole other world. Again this year I will be teaching an astronomy unit to a class at one of the elementary schools here in town. It is amazing to watch their interest and enthusiasm. I also envy them because there is a chance that someday one of them will get to actually step on the moon and perhaps another may very well get to travel, “where no man has gone before.”

Attendance up over last year By Barb Brouwer MARKET NEWS STAFF

The weather was hot and so were ticket sales at the 115th annual fall fair. Salmon Arm and Shuswap Lake Agricultural Association administrator Kelly Weightman says 8,740 people paid at the gate, up 1,000 over last year. “We are all very pleased. The two years previous were down; this is a turnaround,” said Weightman Monday morning. “I think our Elvis impersonator, the great weather and the motorcycle display were factors.” Elvis impersonator Adam Fitzpatrick drew huge crowds to the stage for each performance and will be welcome to make a return visit next year. The fair opened Friday evening a number comments and presentations. On behalf of the fair, Lucy Schaff, historian and longtime member of The Salmon Arm and Shuswap Lake Agricultural Association, accepted a provincial Century Farm Award from constituency assistant Roxena Goodine who was representing Shuswap MLA George Abbott.

Alf Peterson and his son Allan also received a century award, which is sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture. “In 1912, Alf’s father Ed acquired 10 acres in the North Broadview area, known then as “the Limit,” and planted a small orchard,” said Goodine, “This was the start of a family generational enterprise, well-known and wellrespected…” Next up to the mic, North Okanagan-Shuswap MP Colin Mayes presented longtime Salmon Arm resident Cindy Derkaz with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal. “Our commitment to

Canada is strengthened when we collectively pay homage to those who distinguish themselves by virtue of their talents, their generosity and their service to our community and to our country,” he said. One hiccup involving a lack of event scheduling was noted and will be addressed for next year’s fair, says Weightman. A heavily promoted wobbly ball feature did not materialize after the operator left the site without explanation. Looking at how most of the fair rolled out smoothly, Weightman handed out kudos to the more than 600 volun-

teers who made it happen. “We have a new grounds manager who really brought the setup together,” she said of Dan Brock, offering praise as well, to Graham and the McCurdy family, all the convenors for each of the divisions and the board of directors. “Our fair is really supported by the local community,” she said. “Hats off to the community for coming to our fair.” Weightman says plans are already under way to improve the 2013 edition, including one to make registration easier.

SILVERBACKS SPOTLIGHT It’s been just over a year for Jeff Kennedy since he made the SilverBacks out of Main Camp and a lot has happened since then. After winning over the fans as a rookie and a summer that wowed Hockey Operations staff; Jeff and his twin brother Brendan are ready for another season, this time with more responsibility attached. Jeff says that being named an Assistant Captain, along with his brother; is quite the honour, “It means a lot to be able to represent the change in the organization. We’re excited to be part of the leadership group that gets to turn the franchise around.” He realizes that wearing an “A” on his jersey is not just about leading on the ice, “It’s about being a positive example and role model in the community; especially when we’re out in the community representing this team.” While the brothers graduated High School last spring, Jeff says the ride isn’t over, “We’re both taking Sociology at Okanagan College and plan on writing the SAT’s as many times as possible. It’s important to keep the brain fresh and stay in learning mode.” Jeff hopes that those on the fence about the team will come see the product, “The organization has a whole new look, we’re going to be active in the community, we’re going to give back and of course we’re going to bring an exciting brand of hockey. We will play with an edge, with speed and it will be very entertaining!” Thank you for keeping up to date on your SilverBacks throughout the summer and don’t forget the Home Opener is this Friday September 14th at 7pm as the ‘Backs host the Vipers at the Shaw Centre!

Speedboat operator found not guilty By Martha Wickett MARKET NEWS STAFF

A man who drove a speedboat into Copper Island, a crash which later resulted in the death of a passenger, has been found not guilty of two criminal charges. In a decision rendered Sept. 5 in BC Supreme Court in Kamloops, Justice Robert Powers found Todd Gordon Kerr, 39 at the time of the collision, not guilty of one count of dangerous operation of a vessel causing death and two counts of dangerous operation of a vessel causing bodily harm. The crash occurred the night of Aug. 1, 2008. Pattie Lynn McKenna, 24, one of three women and two men onboard the 30-foot Baja Outlaw inboard speed boat, died of injuries suffered in the collision. The judge ruled that while Kerr was negligent in his operation of the boat, the evidence did not prove

beyond a reasonable doubt that he was criminally liable. He stated that if this was a provincial offence similar to careless driving, he would have been guilty of such an offence. Although Kerr was negligent by driving too fast in low visibility when he was not aware of the surroundings, the judge said the question he must answer under the law is “whether the dangerous manner of driving was the result of a marked departure from the standard of care which a reasonable person would have exercised in the same circumstances.” Justice Powers concluded that while the case is “certainly close to the line..., given Mr. Kerr’s evidence which was not seriously challenged about the thought process he entered into, and the evidence of Ms. Jankowski about his generally conscientious operation of the vessel, I find that I am left with a reasonable doubt...”

Shuswap SAR to the rescue By Barb Brouwer MARKET NEWS STAFF

A “damsel in distress” was spared a night on a remote forestry road, thanks to the members of Shuswap Search and Rescue. Shortly after midnight Friday, Sept. 7, a woman called 911 to report she was not only lost, but her small car was hung up on the centre of the

deeply rutted road. The woman was heading to Tilley’s Landing where she was supposed to meet her boyfriend, who was on a houseboat, said SAR search manager John Schut. “She took a forest service road behind White Lake looking for Tilley’s Landing in the dark,” said Schut. “She took a wrong turn and got her car high centred and

was quite distraught being in the dark by herself.” The search, headed up by another search manager, Tara Stanley, included two twomember teams. “Tara figured out where she was pretty quick by the maps and the cell phone conversation,” said Schut. “The RCMP had been working out there trying to find her. They made it to Tilley’s

Landing and the houseboat was no longer there.” Schut says SAR crews found the woman quickly and were back in their beds by about 3:30 a.m. And Scut says one of the team members put the woman up for the night “The right decisions were made,” he said. “It’s nice she was located and brought out safely.”

It has been reported that Greg Darroch, a B.C. businessman has purchased the financially troubled West Beach at the mouth of the Adams River. Mr. Darroch has been quoted in a Kamloops newspaper article saying the area is “a really sensitive site,” his “focus is to stick with family camping and enjoyment of the area” and “you need to keep it environmentally friendly.” Mr. Darroch has also been quoted as stating, “I want to put

The North Shuswap has seen its share of both positive and negative developments and business developers in the past. In an effort to demonstrate his positive approach to the environment at the mouth of the Adams River and a financially feasible project, I believe that Mr. Darroch needs to demonstrate a show of good faith to illustrate that he is serious about what he has been quoted. I think this could be achieved by the immediate removal of the myriad of boat buoys located at West Beach near the mouth of the Adams River. These boat buoys were part of

Why kids grow like weeds GAIA GARDENING Margo Westaway

I’m always amazed by how much kids morph and grow over the two short months of summer. They all seem to sprout longer legs and arms and they all look tanned, relaxed and healthy. There’s probably a good reason for it, because just like a healthy plant in a well looked after garden, they get plenty of sunlight, fresh nutrients and lots of water, which allows them to thrive and grow and brim with good health. Their bodies are like “living soil,” and if they have sufficient minerals and trace elements to work with, they’re able to nurture them and produce everything

they need to live and grow. These essential materials, however, can easily become depleted when they do not get enough of them from the food we eat. Centuries of constant use of the same agricultural fields have led to foods that are highly nutrientdeficient. The situation worsened with the onset of chemical fertilizers, which force crops to grow more rapidly. When minerals and trace elements run low in the body, important functions can no longer be sustained or they become subdued and disease is generally accompanied by a lack of one or more of these important substances. In a nutshell, weak food plants create weak animals and humans. The health of any plant is totally dependent on the overall environmental health and nutrient diversity of the soil in which it grows. Before the depletion of soils, plant foods were our ideal mineral provider. When a plant

grows in a healthy soil environment, it absorbs existing colloidal minerals and changes them into ionic, water-soluble form, which is then absorbed readily by body cells. Some of the common forms of nutrients in the soil are nitrogen, potassium, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, sulfur, iron, manganese, zinc, boron, copper, sodium and cobalt, just to name a few. We have a number of devices available to us that can measure and evaluate nutrient levels and quality in our foods that we grow and the most common of these tools is called a Brix, which is a mini telescope-like gizmo with a refractometer that can instantly interpret these levels for you. Brix values are commonly used for grape and other fruit production to determine the sugar content of fruit (and thus fruit quality and harvest times) but also for minerals, proteins, amino acids, flavonoids, anti-

oxidants, essential oils and more. In one of our class sessions, we compared the values of store-bought veggies and fruits to organically grown ones, and it was readily apparent the differences in nutrient values. We also watched through the meter how quickly the plant lost its nutrient value after picking it, which completely supported the wise words of health experts to eat foods as fresh and quickly as possible. It was our instructor’s firm belief that when fruits and vegetables are judged at the fair, a Brix reading should be part of the equation. After all, all these foods may look perfect, but do they taste great and are they loaded with important nutrients to support wellness. After seeing what I did, I’d have to agree. Growing healthy kids is literally growing them from the ground up. Like they say, the secret’s in the soil.

B.C. Conservative discord gives Liberals some hope GUEST SHOT Chris Foulds This week began with message No. 63 of 224 unread weekend missives in my email box at work capturing my attention. It was an email message from Friends of John Cummins. No, the group was not offering me millions of dollars from a deceased Nigerian prince. It was, in fact, announcing that Cummins, the leader of the B.C. Conservative Party, had, on the weekend, had his leadership endorsed by six regional directors of the upstart party. One of these directors is Alan Forseth of Kamloops, a man whose allegiance to the party is unquestionable, as anybody who has checked out Forseth’s Facebook page can attest. Meanwhile, 85 members of the party met in Victoria on the weekend, with the official word emerging that the B.C. Conservatives are united. That is certainly not true and to claim as

much — in the face of the party’s lone MLA suggesting he is not content with Cummins’ leadership and the leaking last week of incamera minutes from a party meeting that show divisions — is an insult to the electorate. Of course, the governing B.C. Liberals are a mess, with a beleaguered leader and cabinet ministers quitting the cause day after day after day. When the party in charge is heading straight for the political cliff off of which Social Credit (in 1991) and the NDP (in 2001) tumbled, it would make strategic sense to present a united front. It would be strategic, but it would not be honest. Cummins has claimed the dissenters number only a few on the party’s board. Then again, the documents leaked last week suggest more than a few and John van Dongen, the Abbotsford-South MLA who left the B.C. Liberals earlier this year to join Cummins’ Conservatives, decided to offer a “no comment” when asked if he still supports Cummins as leader. The party will hold an annual general meeting in Langley on Sept. 22, at which time members will be asked to vote on whether to hold

ty of the discord once and for all and allows it to focus on replacing the B.C. Liberals as the Official Opposition following the election, which takes place exactly eight months from tomorrow (Sept. 14). Whether that battle takes place with Cummins at the helm, or van Dongen seeking the leadership, or an entirely different ruling class altogether, remains to be seen. However, it is not hyperbolic to suggest the party’s very survival is pinned to this current mess. With thirdplace finishes and paltry numbers in the April Port Moody-Coquitlam (15 per cent of the vote) and Chilliwack-Hope (25 per cent of the vote) byelections, the Conservatives have precious little on which to build. The B.C. Liberals, however, are likely revelling in this unexpected political gift that has been delivered in the shadow of the election campaign. Whether it unwraps to reveal a second life or explodes amid a united Conservative front shall be revealed, which is why watching B.C. politics remains the most fascinating entertainment choice, year after year.

a leadership review. As it happens, I ran into van Dongen in Abbotsford on the weekend, as we both attended a non-political function. We spoke at length about politics and, though the comments were mixed with cocktails and mostly off the record, it is safe to say the truth of what is happening with the B.C. Conservatives is somewhere in the middle. Whether Cummins is the right person to lead the Conservatives in the May 2013 election is for Conservative members to decide. It cannot be disputed that Cummins carries with him some political liability, the severity of which depends on one’s perspective. As a Conservative MP, he voted in favour of the HST. Shortly thereafter, when running for the B.C. Conservative leadership, he criticized it as a “tax grab.” Cummins was also on record as favouring a byelection once a politician quit a party to join another, yet van Dongen was permitted to do so without giving voters a chance to reaffirm their commitment to their MLA carrying a new party banner. The B.C. Conservatives are desperately hoping the AGM later this month rids the par-

Trail lovers can find bliss along Adams River SHUSWAP PASSION Jim Cooperman With all the attention given to the new trails in the Shuswap, it is easy to overlook the well-established ones. We are fortunate to live close to some of the best of these trails, along the lower Adams River in Roderick HaigBrown Park. The other day I rode my mountain bike from the bridge up to the northern end of the park at Gold Creek along the river and then returned on the Packer Trail, which hugs the hillside above the river. The first feature beyond the gravel pit is the remains of an old homestead. The last family to live there was Ray and Jesse Webb. Ray was a bookkeeper in Chase and after he passed away in the early 1970s, the property was acquired by the province to become part of the Conservation Area and later a park in 1977. In the early 1900s, a Mr. Fusee operated a logging camp there, and he also built the first bridge, made out of poles, over the river. The trail is actually an old road, which ends at the gorge (called Devil’s Door), a favou-

rite place to hike on the rocks, fish, or enjoy the rush of the river with an inner tube, kayak or raft. Above the gorge there are a few great viewpoints, and further up, a log staircase leads back down to the trail along the river. While hiking along the river is very enjoyable, there is even more pleasure whipping along on a bike through the mature cedar, fir and black cottonwood forest and close to the fast -moving river. Near the top of the park, I was surprised to find a cable crossing, which I had never noticed before. This is one of Environment Canada’s 2,635 water gauging stations, and it has been there for quite some time. The data for this station (number 08LD001) can be accessed via the internet. The EC Water Office site indicates that there has been a monitoring station at the Adams River since 1911, and thus the data includes the years up until 1945 when there was a splash dam just below the lake. The old Adams Lake Lumber Company built the dam in 1907 to help transport logs by water to its mill in Chase. This dam devastated the upper Adams River salmon run, once a larger run than the lower Adams River run. At one time there was a bridge over Gold Creek at the northern tip of the park and an old road went all the

The Packer Trail joins the main trail where the powerline crosses the river. It was once the main trail that connected the North Shuswap to Adams Lake. There are 54 documented archaeological sites throughout the park, including pit house depressions, cache pits, artifacts, fire-burned rock and pictographs. All of these sites are protected by law and the locations are kept confidential. One of the most popular recreational features of the lower Adams River is the whitewater rafting. Doug Trotter began his company; Interior Whitewater Expeditions back in 1983 with just one

raft. It was an immediate success, as in their first year they had some 1,200 clients and in the heydays of the 1990s, thousands per year took the ride from the lake to the bridge. In 2001, he moved his business up to the Clearwater River, and another company now operates on the Adams River. In 2006, the Ministry of Environment provided leadership for an initiative to seek heritage nomination for the Adams River under the Canadian Heritage Rivers System. Although achieving this status would not add any more protection to the river than already exists, it would provide greater national recognition of its recreational, cultural, geographical and fishery values. CLASSACTION Be patient. Patience is essential when beginning an exercise regimen. Many people grow discouraged if their workout routine doesn’t produce jawdropping results overnight. But an effective and healthy exercise regimen will gradually produce results, leading to long-term health, as opposed to an overnight fix with minimal longterm effectiveness. When beginning the regimen, do so slowly and allow for gradual progress. Learning to rest is also part of being patient. The body needs time to recover between workouts, so don’t expect to exercise every day at the start. Initially, you should be giving your body at least one day to recover between workouts. Work with a professional. Personal training sessions can be costly, but they’re also worth it. Technology is constantly changing, and you may very well

Workers at the ICBC claims centre in Salmon Arm and other locations in B.C. are scheduled for a one-day strike Tuesday, similar to a recent walkout by thousands of BCGEU members. A spokeswoman for Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union said 46 members at the claims centre here will walk off the job Sept. 18. The union is governed by essential services legislation, however, so there will be reduced services available. “It’s a one-day action,” said Sage Aaron, a spokeswoman with COPE Local 378. “We don’t want to get drawn into fight with drivers. It’s with government and ICBC. We’re asking people to reschedule to another day.” The union said ICBC has offered a two per cent wage hike over four years at the same time executives got huge salary increases. About 1,500 workers will be off the job provincewide. Insurance services will still be available at private Autoplan dealers.

Rehabilitation work continues on Sicamous Creek By Barb Brouwer MARKET NEWS STAFF

Sicamous Creek will be put in its place sometime soon. Shuswap Emergency Plan co-ordinator Cliff Doherty says the creek continues to flow in the channel it gouged out for itself when it overflowed the old channel. “The new channel is basically where the old road to the landfill was,” says Doherty. “Highways crews and contractors have been cleaning out the preevent channel and they’ve had engineers draw up a design as to how it should be to prepare it or make it better for future events.” Sicamous Creek experienced a debris flow 15 years ago, at the same time Hummingbird Creek overflowed its banks in 1997. He says the headwaters for Mara, Hummingbird and Sicamous creeks are all in the same area so rainfall or snowpack affect both watersheds in the same way. Doherty says he is not sure what the time frame is on finishing the current work being done by the province, but when it is, the creek will be redirected to its former channel. “When that happens, they can fill the flood channel in and rebuild that portion of Highway 97 and reconstruct Two Mile Road leading to the landfill,” says Doherty. “It is possible it might not be ready until October.” In the meantime, residents are permitted to place their household garbage in temporary bins set up at the Sicamous dog park, beside the public works facility. All the costs of transporting the household waste to Salmon Arm and the tipping fees are being absorbed by the province. “That’s them saying sorry to residents that they don’t have a landfill,” says Doherty, noting the province, Columbia Shuswap Regional District and District of Sicamous are

working together to benefit residents. He says the estimated cost of the flooding to the municipality of Sicamous is in the magnitude of half a

million dollars. The district does qualify for disaster financial assistance. Doherty says the first claims have been received by the province, but he is not aware

of any cheque being cut as yet. He says all restoration works must be completed within 18 months and that funding will be ongoing. Doherty says the Si-

camous debris flow and flooding brought out the best in a number of people. “Personally, this is the most significant event that has occurred

in my time as emergency program co-ordinator,” he said. “There’s great, great kudos to all the people who pulled together. We had extraordinary

effort by our social services volunteers and the many groups, people and agencies, who came together to help citizens across the Shuswap to clean up.”

FOR RECYCLING YOUR MILK CARTONS

Recycling your milk containers is easy. Simply give them a quick rinse and bring them with your bottles and cans on your next Return-It Depot trip. There’s no refund because you didn’t pay a deposit when you bought the milk. Last year Return-It collected over 630,000 kg of milk containers for recycling and kept them out of landfills. Help us recycle even more.

Artists earn recognition for work Salmon Arm Fall Fair’s popular Shuswap Idol attracted large audiences this year – about 200 per show, says organizer Lori Risling. “The 24 contestants gave it their all over the weekend,” says Risling. Results include: • 18 and under: First place – Kyra Bayers, second place – Reid Gomme, third place – Daimery Mast and honourable mentions – Arianna Vrieling and Brianna Peters. • 19 and over: First place – Melissa Wood, second place – Jesse Johnson and third place – Brandon Robbins. “The incredible talent we have in the Shuswap was even more evident this year with the addition of the singer/songwriter category,” said Risling. “These contestants performed their own original tunes and the quality was exceptional.” Singer/songwriter: first place – Jesse Mast, second place – Megan Lauridsen, four thirdplace finishers – Ami Owens, Rosa Saba, Arlene Smith and Josh St. John. There were two honourable mentions in the singer/songwriter category: Sam Kelder and Ross Chagun. The winner of the

Askew’s People’s Choice Award was Jesse Mast. In the photo contest, Megan Rolin with her photo “Dog at Enderby River – Shilo,” won the People’s Choice award. The people viewing and voting for their favourite photos on display at the fair had many excellent photos to choose from – 432 photos from 102 entrants. Second place in the People’s Choice category went to “Seagull’s Despair,” a black and white photo taken by Kayla Butts. Third place was Leslie’s Stuart’s “Peek A Boo” – a seal peeking out of the water. In fourth was “Red Earth

– Yunan,” by Martin Kyllo. Fifth and sixth place was a tie between Noreen Sadiwynk and Myrtle Kyllo, with their respective photos titled “Osprey’s Supper” and “Late Snack.” Kevin Kaiser was seventh with “My House.” The final three were also a tie – Clive Bryson’s “Northern Hawk Owl,” Colleen Thurgood’s “Proud Mama,” and Richard Kyllo’s “Before The Rain.” The photography division thanks all who helped with the fair event and the sponsors of special and best of show prizes: Ted Belcher of Sorrento; Shuswap Photo Arts Club, Clixel, Salmon Arm Chamber of Commerce, Shuswap District Arts Council and Salmon Arm Observer.

CHASE Fostering fun and fundraising By Cavelle Layes MARKET NEWS STAFF

Even more Chase children will be smiling this Christmas, thanks to the hard work and generosity from a group of Chase residents. The annual Chabelos Cares For Kids event was in full swing again this year, seeing over 70 attendees and raising a total of $2,200 worth of toys for the Chase Hamper Society. Each year, Chabelos Resort invites all of their guests and seasonal and yearly owners, to attend a social potluck supper. “It is an afternoon of fun, food and fellowship,” says Cheryl Niemi, Chabelos resident. While the event is free, the organizers suggest guests bring along a toy and one item to be entered into an auction.

In exchange, the resort purchases chicken for all the guests at the potluck barbecue. This year’s event brought in more than 55 gifts valued at approximately $1,100, with another $1,100 being raised through the auction and a 50/50 draw. “We went through the toys that had been donated to see what we had and for what age groups,” says Niemi. “Then we used the money that was donated to fill in the ages that were missing.” More than 100 toys in total were donated to the Chase Hamper Society, including everything from toy trucks to I-pods. Niemi says the group has chosen the Chase Hamper Society each year because it helps the people close to home who need it. “If we are able to help out all the kids

Looking for leash-free space By Cavelle Layes MARKET NEWS STAFF

Dogs may soon be able to run free in the Chase as the village searches for appropriate grounds for an offleash dog park. Chase Village Council were looking for a resolution that will make residents happy after a number of complaints were brought forward regarding dogs in Memorial Park. While a number of these complaints were directed towards offleash dogs, corporate officer Larry Randle says that generally most people have their dogs on a leash in Memorial Park during the summer months. As the councillors discussed at the committee of the whole meeting on Sept. 4, however, it is the few dogs wandering on their own that have been causing problems for some. The village does have a bylaw officer in place who tries to

enforce the rules that have been set in place, however, with only 12 hours a week, they can’t be everywhere. “I don’t think we could ever have a bylaw officer to work enough hours to get all the violators,” says Coun. Rick Berrigan. “Even trainers go down with their dogs and take them off their leash in the park to train them.” Randle describes instances during the summer where the bylaw officer approached a number of people and explained to them that their dogs needed to be on a leash while in the park. “They then got mad and came into the office,” explains Randle. Randle pointed out that from his own experience visiting the park, he has noticed many people tend to use the far end of the beach for throwing a ball to their dog in the water. “This area is technically out of the park boundary,” says Randle, suggesting the area

could potentially be kept for this purpose. Bringing the dogs to the end of the beach area keeps the animals away from the majority of the park population, while still allowing them to have access to the water and area to run around. Coun. David Leppsoe also suggested having the park divided into areas where dogs could go off leash as well as an designated area that remains dogfree. This would, for instance, ban dogs from the playground area where children are playing, as well as some of the areas surround the playground, but leave another portion of the park dog friendly. While it seems as though an off-leash park might not be feasible in Memorial Park, the option was not turned down by the councillors who requested more information on other possible locations around Chase.

A number of the council members agreed that the residents of Chase, and their canine companions, could benefit from an off-leash park, a place a where dogs could run freely without affecting bystanders. Patrick Regush, supervisor of works, suggests that Mill Park may be a potential option for an off-leash location as it is already completely fenced in. The park was originally built as a sewage overflow area but has since been adapted as a ball diamond as well. Regush says he does not suggest closing down the ball field, but rather have dog owners work around the ball schedule, opting to stay away while a game is in progress. “We could make the park multi-purpose,” says Regush. Mayor Ron Anderson agreed with this idea, stating that he is aware of ball diamonds in Victoria that have done the same thing. The mayor suggest-

ed that if the village were to go that route, it could close down the park to dogs for two months of the year during ball season. Councillors decided at the Tuesday, Sept. 11 council meeting that they would like to see an off-leash park installed in the village, but require more information before a decision could be made. Rotarians have mobilized by the hundreds of thousands to eradicate polio. They’re working to ensure that children are immunized against this crippling disease, despite weak infrastructure, extreme poverty, and civil strife prevailing in many countries. Since the PolioPlus program began in 1985, more than 2 billion children have received the oral polio vaccine.

PETKAU, WENDY LYNN February 25, 1967 - September 4, 2012 It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Wendy Petkau. Wendy fought a hard battle with cancer but passed away quietly September 4, 2012. Wendy is survived by her husband Mike, her children Matt (Ashley), Marcus (Kyla) and Melanie, her granddaughters Jayda and Alexis, her father Ernie Widell, her sisters Tony, Suzan (Karl) and Carla (Harry), her father and mother in law Jim and Elaine Johnson as well as many aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her mother Carrol. Wendy was born in Jasper, Alberta and was the youngest of four girls. She moved to Salmon Arm in 1976 with her family and lived here the rest of her life. She was married with love to Mike Petkau on August 12, 1989 and they made their home in Silver Creek. Wendy enjoyed taking pictures, quadding and woodwork. Her scrollwork art was beautiful. Her love for outdoors led her to start a landscaping company which she missed greatly after being diagnosed with cancer. We welcome family and friends to her home to celebrate Wendy’s life at 1:30 on Saturday, September 15 at 2390 Salmon River Road. The family greatly appreciates the care provided by the Vernon and Kelowna Cancer Clinics. The sisters would like to express their deepest gratitude to Elaine, Deb and friends for all the love, care and assistance they gave Wendy over the last 10 months. We would also like to thank the home care givers, especially Sue, for the time they spend with Wendy. In lieu of owers please make a donation to the McMurtry Baerg Cancer Centre of Vernon. Arrangements entrusted to FISCHER’S FUNERAL SERVICES & CREMATORIUM LTD., Salmon Arm (250) 833-1129. The Arctic ice and the unknown unknown past fast, bringing the alternation of rainy and sunny weather that characterized the midlatitude climate. Now they hang around much longer and generate more extreme weather events. There are droughts and heat-waves, or prolonged rain and flooding, or blizzards and long, hard freezes. The temperate zone has been seeing a lot of that sort of thing in the past couple of years — much more than usual.

Profile of the week Tom & Teresa Rankin own the local 1-800-GOT-JUNK? franchise. 1-800-GOT-JUNK? offers full service junk removal. From furniture to appliances, renovation debris to yard waste, rental clean-outs to pre and post moves, they will take anything that two people can move. When customers consider the costs of owning a pick up and/ or trailer that only receives very occasional use, versus hiring someone to haul their junk, the savings become very apparent. In addition customers really like how hard 1-800-GOT-JUNK? works to divert items from the landfill and supports local organizations. They recycle and donate about half of the items that they pick up to support local churches, charity stores, schools, sports groups and other social organizations. 1-800-GOT-JUNK?’s crews are covered by WCB and commercial liability insurance, as well as doing criminal and drivers abstract checks. To have your junk hauled away, call 1-800-468-5865 today!

It’s cutting deeply into food production in the major breadbaskets of the planet, like the U.S. Midwest and southern Russia, which is why food prices are going up so fast. And, this was an “unknown unknown” — nobody saw it coming. All the scenarios the military of various countries were working with assumed climate change would hit food production very hard in the tropical and

sub-tropical parts of the world, and that is still true. But, the scenarios also assumed the temperate regions of the planet would still be able to feed themselves well (and even have a surplus to export) for many decades to come. If Francis and Vavrus are right, that may not be the case. It’s a most unwelcome surprise — and it may be the first of many.

It’s no surprise we will have a record minimum of ice cover in the Arctic Ocean at the end of this summer-melt season. It’s already down to around four-million square kilometres, with a least another week of melting to go, but this is what you might call a “known unknown”. Scientists knew we were losing the ice cover fast; they just didn’t know how fast. I’m no fan of Donald Rumsfeld, who helped to lead the United States into the disastrous invasion of Iraq when he was George W. Bush’s defence secretary, but I never had a problem with the distinction he made between “known unknowns” and “unknown unknowns” when discussing the intelligence data. He was brutally mocked in the media for using such jargon, but there really is a difference. A “known unknown”, in the case of the Arctic Ocean, is how long it will be before the entire sea is icefree at the end of each summer. The last report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), published in 2007, talked about that happening some time in the second half of this century, but it couldn’t be more specific. The IPCC usually underestimates the rate of climatic change, but even the pessimists didn’t think we would get there before the 2030s. I did encounter one maverick at the National Ice and Snow Data Centre who thought it might happen in this decade, but nobody actually knew — a “known un-

slower winds means the waves take more time to track across any given territory. The weather north of the jet stream is wet and cold (even warmer Arctic air is still pretty cold) and to the south it is dry and warm — and now many temperate regions of the planet are stuck in one kind of weather or the other for much longer periods. This is a recipe for extreme weather. In the old days, the Rossby waves went

the wind speeds in the zone between the two and increases the “wave amplitude” of the jet stream. The jet stream flows around the planet in great swooping curves, like a river crossing a flat plain, and those curves — Rossby waves, in scientific language — are getting bigger and slower. The bigger amplitude means the Rossby waves reach farther down into the temperate zone than they used to, and the

known” in other words. There were also some assumptions about what would happen next in the Arctic. At first, the ice would return each winter, although it would be thinner and less extensive than before. However, as time passed, the ice-free period would get longer. A frozen ocean reflects sunlight back into space, but open water absorbs it and turns it into heat, so the ocean itself would now be getting warmer. The warmer water would inhibit the growth of ice even in winter and, eventually, the Arctic Ocean would be ice-free all year round — but nobody knew when this would happen. As for the impact an ice-free Arctic Ocean might have on climates elsewhere, it would obviously accelerate the global-warming trend but, beyond that, there wasn’t much to go on. This was the territory of the “unknown unknowns” — big things might happen to the complex atmospheric system of the planet when a major chunk of it suddenly changes, but nobody knew what. Now we begin to see the consequences. The polar jet stream, an air current that circles the globe in the higher northern latitudes and separates cold, wet weather to the north from warmer, drier weather to the south, is changing its behaviour. In a paper in Geophysical Letters last March entitled Evidence linking Arctic amplification to extreme weather in mid-latitudes, Jennifer Francis of Rutgers University and Stephen Vavrus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison offered a hypothesis that may explain why world grain prices have risen 30 per cent in the past four months (and are still going up). First, a warmer Arctic reduces the temperature gradient between the temperate and polar zones. That, in turn, slows

Spend more time entertaining and less time cleaning (NC)—The arrival of fall is a busy time for the whole family. From hectic back-to-school routines to the advent of holiday entertaining, your home is bound to become a hub of activity. To prep for a season of social events and family occasions, it’s time to give your kitchen a cleaning and de-cluttering makeover. Cut through the clutter Whether its school lunches or a Thanksgiving feast, your fridge

can quickly become a haven of leftovers and expired condiments. Toss out products that are past their expiry date, and store leftovers in clear plastic containers for easy identi¿cation. The popular stainless steel wipes by affresh™are an easy to use solution for a streak-free shine. Simply wipe to eliminate residue. when guests are coming for a special occasion. To quickly and effectively cut through residue, use a cooktop cleaner

Breathe easy, breathe healthy (NC)—Did you know that germs live in the air? Poor indoor air quality can result in conditions such as allergies, asthma and headaches. When temperatures drop and windows are shut against the cold weather, indoor air Àow suffers, signi¿cantly affecting your home’s air quality. Professionally

cleaning the air handling system will help remove the dirt, dust, mould and mildew that may be making your family sick. Professionals, such as Sears Home Services technicians, have the technology to easily assess the air quality. Using specialized tools, including a particle counter that gives a precise tally

of particles in the air, the technicians are able to provide accurate inspections for home owners. Technicians can install a HEPA ¿lter to lower the particle count and using a UV lighting device, kill airborne bacteria. In fact, companies like Sears will even conduct the initial consultation for free.

Combined with a standardized questionnaire on factors such as old vs. new development, pets, cleaning products used, allergies, asthma, dampness and drafts, technicians can determine solutions to various problems and recommend services to help improve and preserve air quality. For CO alarms, they need to be replaced every 7-10 years depending on the manufacturer. This is true whether alarms are battery operated or hardwired.
