Cougar kills livestock on edge of Cranbrook Conservation officers kill one of two adolescent cats ANNALEE GR ANT Townsman Staff
Dan Mills woke to a terrible sight Wednesday morning, after a cougar crept onto his property one kilometre south of Cranbrook city limits and preyed on his livestock. In the middle of the night, an adolescent cougar had taken one of Mills’ five llamas. Conservation officers soon arrived to confirm what they called a “textbook” cougar kill. Trauma to the llama’s neck was characteristic of a cougar attack. After confirming it was a cougar that took the llama, the CO used hounds to try to track the animal, but lost the scent as the day got hotter. The property lies one kilometre outside of city limits – and within a kilometre of an elementary school.
Conservation officers set up traps around the carcass and instructed Mills to check the traps at dusk. Sure enough, when Mills returned in the evening of Sept. 12, he saw the characteristic glowing eyes of a cougar. “Just as he predicted, the cougar returned and got caught in one of the traps,” Mills said. The animal was destroyed, and conservation officers believe it was a smaller adolescent, about 17 months old that may have been traveling with a sibling after being pushed out by their mother. After catching the first cat, Mills said the COs cleaned up the area and were able to determine a second cougar was involved due to new tracks.

KING IN CRANBROOK: Elvis was on hand Wednesday night at the Tamarack Centre to give the annual All Male Fashion Show a proper Las Vegas ambience. Hundreds of citizens (mostly female) turned out to see members of the RCMP, the College of the Rockies Avalanche and the Kootenay Ice strut their stuff in the latest styles. The show is a fund-raiser for Cops For Kids, and the RCMP team cycling through southern B.C. was also there helping run the event. See next week for a special photo feature.
Local woman goes to work for accessibility ANNALEE GR ANT Townsman Staff
It was a simple shopping trip that inspired Lori Montcalm to take action. Lori was forced to wait outside earlier this summer as her visiting family toured local shops. They
Free ramps available for local businesses rushed through so they didn’t leave her waiting outside on the sidewalk. Being in a wheelchair in Cranbrook, Lori said it’s a familiar situation for her, and many don’t
realize a lack of accessibility for disabled people extends way beyond the person in the chair. “Living in a wheelchair is an exercise in isolation and frustration,” she said. “It’s not
just me, it’s my friends and family.” So when a friend sent her the link to a project called Stop Gap that offers to build free ramps for businesses, Lori couldn’t wait to get it
started here in Cranbrook to eliminate some of those barriers for people just like her. “There are places here in Cranbrook that I can’t get into so I decided to pick up the torch,” she said.

Cougar kills llama on edge of Cranbrook Continued from page 1 “They now know for a fact that there was a second cougar,” Mills said. Mills had been aware of the cougar’s presence in the area after he spotted a pair of eyes in the darkness in the weeks before. He also noticed tracks around the pasture. With five fullgrown llamas in a herd, he didn’t think they would ever become targets of the predator. “The number one concern is that it had taken domestic livestock,” Mills said. “My llamas have been on our property for 14 years and we’ve never been preyed on.” After the llama was killed, Mills said coyotes moved in to the neighbourhood, adding to the unrest among the rest of his herd that was moved into an adjacent pasture. The property, which features grasslands and pasture for the herd has been in Mills’ family since 1962. He’s had the animals there to chow down on the grasses for
the past 14 years, and he’s never had any taken by a predator before. The llama that was killed was the oldest and weakest in the herd. Mills thinks an increase in the whitetailed deer population could explain the cougar encounter. He has noticed more frequenting his property and moving into town in the time he has lived there. “It’s not as unusual as it used to be because we have so many whitetailed deer up there,” he said. “There are currently more animals on or around the property than I’ve ever seen in my life.” The second cougar has not been spotted, but Mills said the hounds had caught the scent and tracked it heading south away from town. School District 5 issued a warning to all schools in the area Thursday morning, urging students to stay out of wooded areas and avoid deer at this time.

Ramps free for local businesses Continued from page 1
With the help of her son, Lori has been driving her motorized wheelchair around to businesses to deliver a flier offering a free ramp courtesy of Home Depot. Her delivery method proves her point: Lori will roll up to a business, and if she can’t get in, she knocks until someone comes to help. “I can’t necessarily get into the businesses that need one,” Lori said. For those in a wheelchair, that situation is all too familiar. Lori remembers having to go to the police station after an accident near her home. She was unable to get up the stairs, and instead had to drive around the building until she found a door. Then, she pounded on it until someone noticed her. Lori said to her knowledge there is no legislation that makes a business be accessible for disabled people. In the U.S., legislation was passed in 1985 that made all businesses and buildings have ramps and
“Just being able to go out with your friends opens up the world.” Lori Montcalm handicap-accessible washrooms. She wonders why the same hasn’t happened here. “It’s so bizarre to me that Canada is 35 years behind,” she said. One of the challenges Lori sees is that many of her friends’ homes are not easy to access either, which means they opt to go out. That in itself can be frustrating for Lori, as she has to make sure the establishment has a ramp and proper washroom facilities. Home Depot was eager to get on board when Lori brought Stop Gap to their attention. The business participates in a number of community projects each year, and this one fit right in with their mandate. “They decided that this sounded like a worthwhile cause,” Lori said.
Right now, Lori is delivering her fliers around town. A total of 12 temporary ramps will be built, and if a business expresses an interest, Lori will send someone out to get measurements. Home Depot will then construct the ramps and they will be delivered in the last week of September. The ramps will be brightly coloured to draw attention to what they represent. Already three local businesses have signed up to have a ramp installed. Lori said they are designed to be temporary and moveable so that a disabled person can call ahead to have it set up, or they can simply knock and an employee can bring the ramp out and set it up. “This is a great opportunity for local businesses to indicate they are open for business to
all,” Lori said. She believes it’s a winwin situation: businesses will open up to more customers, and herself and others with mobility issues will have more places they can go and feel included. “Just being able to go out with your friends opens the world,” Lori said. Stop Gap was started in Ontario by two friends. After one was injured in an accident and left in a wheelchair, they tried to continue life as normal as possible. Activities like going for a beer after work were difficult, because many places were not accessible. They decided to change that, and have launched a campaign to build ramps for businesses. For more information on their cause, visit stopgap.ca. To enquire about a ramp in Cranbrook, call Lori at (250) 489-3739 or email her at lmontcalm@ shaw.ca. Only 12 ramps will be built this year and they are on a first come first served basis.

SD5 Board congratulates parent on recent award Submit ted
School District 5 has always valued the contributions to public education by the District Parent Advisory Council (DPAC) but on Tuesday night they had good reason to be proud of their District DPAC as well. During her monthly DPAC report at the September 11 Board meeting, Trustee Trina Ayling informed fellow Trustees that DPAC chair, Debbie Therrien, had recently received the Bev Hosker Motivational Award. The award, presented last May to Therrien by the BC Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils (BCCPAC), recognizes exceptional leadership by a newly involved parent within a school or District. Therrien joined DPAC in 2009 and stepped up as Chair in October 2010. Accord-
ing to Ayling this was a critical time for the future of DPAC. “DPAC membership was low and the chair at that time needed to step down. If Debbie hadn’t stepped up, there’s a good chance DPAC would have had to fold,” Ayling said. Since Therrien’s time as Chair, every school in SD5 has become a BCCPAC member, entitling them to vote on important education issues at the provincial level. “Debbie takes representing parents very seriously. In addition to attending our regular public meetings Debbie also attends all three of our monthly Committee meetings,” Ayling said. Ayling added that Therrien is also involved in a number of the Board’s ad hoc committees like Mount Baker’s Replacement/
Neighbourhood of Learning and special education. Therrien also took the initiative to host a forum for parents with former Minister of Education, George Abbott, last Spring and was involved in last year’s Board input forum on the government’s new BC Education Plan. “Her inclusion at these meetings has resulted in Board policies and initiatives which better reflect the ideals of parents in our District,” Ayling said. “In addition to parents, Debbie has the respect of — and strong relationships with — District Staff and Trustees.” For more information on how your school’s Parent Advisory Council can become more involved with DPAC, visit their website at www.dpac.sd5. bc.ca/.

Concert to benefit local family Sally MacDonald Townsman Staff
A local country gospel musician is rallying performers all over western Canada to hold a benefit concert in Cranbrook. Ed King, the Canadian Entertainer of the Year for the Country Gospel Music Associa-
tion, is bringing musicians from as far east as Saskatchewan and as far west as Langley to Cranbrook for one concert on Sunday, September 30. The concert, which will be held 2 p.m. Sept. 30 at the First Baptist Church on 14th Avenue South, is a benefit for the family of Frank Petrik.
Aged 45, Frank Petrik passed away suddenly in March after suffering a massive heart attack. He left behind his partner of 12 years, Alisha Symonds, and their five children: Dylan, 15, Kasandra, 13, Gabrielle, 11, Kursten, 9, and Brandon, 5. Ed said he is a neighbour to the family and
he has known Frank since he was a young man. After hearing that Frank’s life insurance policy would not cover the mortgage, Ed decided to step in. He phoned his friends in country gospel music, who willingly pledged to make a road trip to help out.
Bear reports are picking up CA ROLYN GR ANT dailybulletin
The cooler mornings with a hint of frost are a reminder that fall is right around the corner. And another sure sign that summer is over is the increased number of bear sightings all over Kimberley. Shaunna McInnis of East Kootenay Wildlife Aware says that it’s al-
most as if a switch was turned when September arrived. “Starting on the first of the month the bear sightings started pouring in, she said. In Cranbrook, Wildlife Aware reports bears near Jim Smith Lake and around Pinewoods. And in Kimberley? Everywhere. McInnis warns especially of aggressive/habituated
bears near Morrison Subdivision and in Lower Blarchmont. McInnis says it’s common for bears to come down to lower elevations searching for more food in these months before hibernation. They are looking for berries but will eat anything enticing, including garbage. There are several things you can do to
keep bears from stopping by your property on their wanderings. First of all, lock up you’re garbage. If you have fruit trees in your yard, pick them. If you are out walking, especially in the early morning or evening near dusk, keep your eyes open. And always report any encounter or incident to 1-877-952-7277.
The concert will feature Penny Buhr Johnson, the Country Gospel Music Association’s former Female Vocalist, Songwriter and Instrumentalist of the Year. Also coming from Saskatchewan is comedian, minister and country gospel musician Bob Leslie. Ed King himself will perform; as will his grandson Connor Foote from Kimberley, and his son Lance King, whose music is part of a short film by Langley Pos-Abilities Society. Joining them will be local bands Old Spice and Brad and the Boyz. Tickets are $10 each and are available at Runners RV, Lotus Books, Pages, and East Kootenay Community Credit Union. Cherry Creek Falls park plans hit snag Proponent doesn’t wish to sell portion of mineral claim; swap no longer on table CAROLYN GRANT Daily Bulletin
Residents of Meadowbrook, including members of the Residents’ Association have been fighting against a mineral claim for a quarry. The claim is held by Lost Dog Slate and Stone, The proponents are looking to place a trailer on the claim near Cherry Creek Falls in Meadowbrook, with the potential for a quarry in that location as well. With political support from Area E Director Jane Walter, among others, the Association had been pursuing the potential for the proponent to perhaps swap the claim with another in a different area. Walter had also pursuing an opportunity to create a park at the falls. However, a meeting at the end of August at the RDEK with the proponent, representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Mines, as well as Mineral Titles, Area E resident Bob Eccleston, and Doug Clovechok, BC Liberal candidate for Columbia River Revelstoke has left the possibility for a park a little more distant. It appears that the possibility of a claim being switched to another location is no longer on the table. Instead, the claim holders want to sell it. An option was posed that a portion of the claim be purchased to create a 10- to 15-acre park. However Lost Dog Slate and Stone are not interested in splitting the claim.
They prefer that the entire area be purchased, a park created and no mining occurring on the claim site in the future. The cost of the entire claim purchase would be $51,000. Other conditions of the sale would be that the sale amount agreed upon would have to be paid in full prior to the tenure expiration date of May 4, 2013. There would also have to be a notification of decision by October 1, 2012. Lost Dog has an October 31 deadline for deliverables to the Ministry of Energy and Mines. “At present neither the RDEK nor the province has the budget or is prepared to purchase the mineral claim on behalf of the community, says an RDEK planning and development services memo authored by Andrew McLeod, Manager. “The consensus expressed at the meting was that this should be the responsibility and the contribution of the local Meadowbrook community if they want to see a regional park project proceed. In addition, McLeod explained that with the approximate area of the claim being 188 hectares the RDEK would have to apply for Crown land tenure over all of it as a regional park. This would have long term operational and maintenance implications for the RDEK’s regional park program. The next step is a public meeting to explain to Meadowbrook residents that there is an opportunity to purchase the mineral claim area.

Liberal critic visits Teck operations
Federal Liberal critic for defence John McKay visited the East Kootenay on Sept. 11 to view mining operations at Teck to research his upcoming Private Member’s Bill. McKay, MP for Scarborough–Guildwood, met with local Liberal supporters following a tour of operations to talk about the new bill, nicknamed the Sunshine Bill. The Corporate Social Responsibility Bill will be submitted in the fall session of the House of Commons. Following in the footsteps of a similar American bill, it will require corporations to reveal financial information on their activities in third world countries. McKay said corporations will have to report every six months on who they are paying, the amount they paid and what currency was used. He said his proposed bill has been met favourably by the corporations he has visited in researching the bill. “Just tell us, he said. “They think transparency is a good thing. Teck is listed on both the Toronto and New York stock exchanges. Currently, corporations in the U.S. are required to report their third world country activities,
John McKay and it makes sense for Canada to require it as well, McKay said. There would be no changes locally for the mining industry if the bill should pass, but Canadian companies with overseas operations will have to begin reporting their activities. “This would only apply to companies outside of Canada, he said. Besides the tour, McKay said he couldn’t pass through the area without stopping to meet with local Liberal members, and specifically former candidate for MP, Betty Aitchison. “Betty is a legend. You can’t go through the East Kootenay without visiting Betty, he said. While in the Kootenay-Columbia riding, McKay urged local supporters to not give up on the riding that has been a Conservative stronghold since Jim Abbott took over the
reins in 1997. Conservative MP David Wilks defeated Aitchison in the 2011 federal election. “Never give up hope, McKay said, adding that there is a volatility in the Canadian electorate. “In 2015 we will have a superior candidate to the incumbent. McKay said people across the country are becoming fed up with the prime minister and change could be in the future when Canadians head to the polls in 2015. “Mr. Harper has reached his best before date, he said. One of the key issues in the Kootenay-Columbia riding has been the long-gun registry, and McKay said the opposition was clear, but he believes Canadians have lost a valuable resource. “That is extraordinarily regrettable, he said. McKay said Toronto police chief William Blair has said he accessed the registry thousands of times a day, and it contributed to the effectiveness of police investigations. “People are giving this up, he said. After the Kootenay stop, McKay was scheduled to head to Vancouver to meet with more mining industry heavy weights.
RDEK won’t support Rosen Lake campground expansion Sally MacDonald Townsman Staff
The expansion to a campground at Rosen Lake is not supported by the regional district. Heather and Robert Travis Crabbe are seeking permission from the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) to turn their 10-site campground into a 40-site campground.
But the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) will tell the ALC it does not support the expansion. “The land use plan doesn’t call for any campsites north of the highway, said board chair Rob Gay. The RDEK has concerns about sewage disposal and increased traffic on the access
road to the lake. “There are ample campgrounds near Jaffray, added Gay. The existing campground has been operating since 1972, before land use regulations were adopted for the area. The ALC is yet to make a final decision on the campground application.

Did you get so excited about the prospect of eating garden fresh tomatoes that you planted a total of 5 million plants? I have a proposal, East Kootenay. Have you ever heard of Spain’s La Tomatina Festival? I propose we all forgo the canning and salsa making this year, and just hold our own tomato food fight. Imagine Baker Street or the Platzl overflowing with red, gooey, over-ripe tomatoes. Just think of either mayor – Stetski or McRae – volunteering as targets, or kids young and old pelting their teachers or principals. Yes, this is the proper destiny for my beloved tomatoes, mothered and feted over all summer. They are not to be eaten, they are to be used as missiles for a rowdy food fight in the streets. They should be squished and used for just one hour of glory, after the hundreds of hours it took to grow them. Start collecting your tomatoes, gardeners. After I finish making 40 loaves of zucchini bread, I’m comin’ for ya.

Avro Arrow I would like to say thank you for including the “Avro Arrowâ€? story in your Monday edition of the Townsman. It is important for the public to know how the government is spending our money. When the “Arrowâ€? was first created it was the best design ever, but it was shelved for political reasons. Now it is proposed again. At a cost of more than four million dollars and a flight ability of 20,000 feet less, Canada is going to use the F-35 instead. The government’s credibility here, in my opinion, is questionable. Our hardearned money is being wasted — at whose whim? The Arrow is a Canadian design, and we have the capability to produce it, thus creating a few thousand jobs, and pride in ourselves and our country. Yet we are going to send the money offshore. my questions in an email reply but I guess you prefer to exchange information with your constituents in the newspapers. Anyway, here are the questions I was asking. You say that you support (and are somewhat responsible for) the authorized grizzly bear hunt and that the person pictured (Zeke Fantuz) “earnedâ€? his grizzly bear kill. My dictionary offers these definitions for the word “earnedâ€? and I wonder if you could tell me which one applies in Zeke’s case: • to gain or get in return for one’s labour or service: to earn one’s living. • to merit as compensation, as for service; deserve: to receive more than one has earned. • to acquire through merit: to earn a reputation for honesty. • to gain as due return or profit: savings accounts earn interest. Secondly, you state that the bear hunt is based on science. I am a really big fan of science and love it when decisions are made on the basis of evidence. Would you please provide the scientific source information that you are referring to here? Thirdly, who is Zeke Fantuz? Did someone get charged money for killing this bear (in the picture)? Did Zeke really kill the bear? When I google his name I get an outfitter - why is that? Bill Goss Cranbrook

What’s Up?
Letters to the Editor On Wednesday morning I was involved in a motor vehicle accident. I never had the opportunity to personally thank the people that came to my aid. There was a newcomer to Cranbrook who held the door up for what seemed an eternity, provided his coat for warmth, a strong voice and good humour to help me keep my focus. The wonderful woman who put her first aid training to work to maintain my safety. Others that joined in to ensure 911 was called and the situation didn’t require more assistance. The paramedics, fire services and RCMP were all prompt on the scene and were quick to free me from the vehicle, all with grace and humour. The hospital staff continued to make a rotten situation more bearable. It comforts me to see that spirit – it shows why this great community is my home. Thank you, all of you; you are my unsung heroes.

like budgets and project management. The most outrageous concepts can be welcomed, examined, and pursued or rejected. But is there any realistic prospect that human beings could ever build a starship? Nobody knows. As Douglas Adams’s seminal work, “The Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, sagely observed: “Space ... is big. Really big. You just won’t believe how vastly, hugely, mindbogglingly big it is. Building a starship would therefore require not just four or five generations of technological revolutions. It would also require the overturning, or at least the wholesale reinterpretation, of the laws of physics as currently understood. Last time around, it took about five centuries, say from 1450 to 1950, to get through a comparable scale of change in technology and physics. But of course things move much faster now. At any rate, it’s hard to see what harm the 100YSS could do, even if it never achieves its objective. If the history of space-flight up to now is any guide, at the very least it would produce radically new technologies that have major positive impacts on human welfare. And if it actually succeeded... That would be the biggest deal in human history. The most recent estimate is that there are about 30,000 planets suitable for our kind of life within a thousand light years of here. Most observers assume that if a planet can support life, then it will almost certainly have life. It would be a great pity to miss out on all that because of a mere lack of ambition. Local coach proud of his fighters for effort at MMA event TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor
Cranbrook just wrapped up it’s first-ever MMA event last weekend, and while the city has spent the last two years preparing for the event, local fighters had been working for months to get into fighting shape. House of Pain, a mixed martial arts combat school run out of the Rocky Mountain Academy of Martial Arts (RMAMA) had six fighters on the Battle for the Border fight card: Sheldon Doll, Curtis Blackmore, Chris Darula, John MacKinnon, Mike Seguin and Nik Ramsey. Sensei Mike Corrigan coaches all of the fighters and worked with Battle for the Border promoters in Isaac Hockley and Jody McInnes to set up the fight card for the event. Darula, a Cranbrookbased fighter, and Seguin, who came in from Kimberley, fought on amateur cards and won their respective bouts.
However, in spite of wins or losses, Corrigan is still very proud of the performance from his fighters. “I’m as proud as I can be of my guys,” Corrigan said. “They put on a good show, they came in prepared and anything can happen in a fight. Yeah, a couple of them got caught, but for the opponents they were facing, they did extremely well.” It was a juggling act at times for Corrigan, who had to deal with a few fighter cancellations on the Alberta side, but the end result was worth all the effort, he said. “It went well, it really did,” said Corrigan. “The fans that were there were nothing but entertained. The atmosphere at a live MMA event is so electric. It’s so much different than watching it on TV. “There really is nothing like the feeling and the atmosphere of a live event. It’s ecstatic. I’ve had wonderful feedback from people who were there.”
Correction There was an incorrect fact reported in a story headlined “Promoter pleased with reception for first-ever MMA event” that ran on Wednesday, September 12, 2012. I had stated that Mike Seguin was the only regional fighter to win his bout, when in fact, I meant to write he was the only fighter representing Kimberley who won his bout. Cranbrook’s own Chris Darula opened Battle for the Border by notching his second amateur win with a textbook Guillotine Choke on his opponent, David Crawford. Sincere apologies to Chris Darula, his family and House of Pain for the misstatement. Trevor Crawley Sports Editor

Football program gearing up for season TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor
The Mount Baker Wild football team is looking to take lessons learned through two difficult losses as they prepare for another exhibition game this Saturday. Entering its second year, the Mount Baker football program is still a little young, but head
coach Steve Lightfoot is patiently working with eager players that are trying hard to improve every practice. The Wild are sharpening their claws in preseason action on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Crescent Heights Vikings, who are making the trip from Medicine Hat, Alberta.
The Vikings are coming off a thrilling 40-7 victory against their rival high school in the Medicine Hat Mohawks—a traditional provincial football powerhouse. “They’re [Vikings] coming off a big high,” said Lightfoot. “They’ll be a big, physical team, but a game is a game. It’s
great experience for my boys before we start into league play, which starts next weekend.” Lightfoot said the team has a good core of roughly 30 players, noting that teams, in any sport, go through cycles. “You’re strong for a couple years, then you drop down and rebuild,”
said Lightfoot. “We’re in year two of the rebuilding process and we got some good athletes that came back. “We’ll do alright this year.” The Wild opens their regular season on the road next weekend against the Kalamalka Secondary Lakers in Vernon.
Ice trade McKinlay to Kelowna for 2015 draft pick TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor
The Kootenay Ice have taken a step towards addressing their overage situation by dealing Dylen McKinlay to the Kelowna Rockets for a conditional pick in the fifth round of the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft. McKinlay’s departure leaves Captain Drew Czerwonka, Brock Montgomery, Elgin Pearce and Joey Leach as the remaining 20-year-olds on the roster. “With us having five 20-year-old players on the roster we knew we had to reduce this number as soon as we could,” said Jeff Chynoweth, general manager for the Kootenay Ice. “With the
abundance of 1992-born players in the league, we wanted to ensure that Dylen had the opportunity to play his final season in the WHL. We would like to thank Dylen for his time with our hockey club and wish him all the best in Kelowna.” Kootenay is now down to 27 players, with 16 forwards, nine defencemen and two goaltenders. McKinlay was acquired in the 2011 offseason from the Victoria Royals in a trade for former Ice defenseman Hayden Rintoul. McKinlay, who was drafted by the Minnesota Wild in 2010, has played four years in the WHL and tallied 15 goals
and 24 assists while wearing a Kootenay uniform last season. The Ice are on the road this Friday and Sunday as they head to the Crowsnest Pass to meet the Lethbridge Hurricanes and the Calgary Hitmen halfway to wrap up exhibition season. The team will be in Cranbrook on Saturday to make an appearance at Coyote Jack’s Grill for a pancake breakfast, as season ticket holders are invited flip some flapjacks with the boys while picking up their ticket packages. Coyote Jack’s Grill will be open from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and season ticket holders will need photo identification.

Sports Commissioner defends NHL stance: no deal, no season Chris Johnston Canadian Press
NEW YORK - Darkness is about to descend on the National Hockey League. Again. Reiterating that the season won’t start until there is a new collective bargaining agreement, commissioner Gary Bettman offered an impassioned defence of the league’s stance Thursday as it headed toward its fourth work stoppage in 20 years. “Listen, nobody wants to make a deal and play hockey more than I do, OK?” he said during a news conference. “This is what I do. This is what my life is about in terms of how I spend most of my waking hours. This is really hard. “And so you only get involved in this situation when you understand what the issues are and you know you’re doing the right thing for the long-term stability
of our game and our sport. This is very hard and I feel terrible about it.” No one is holding out hope that an 11th-hour deal will be struck before the CBA expires Saturday at midnight. Both Bettman and Donald Fehr, the executive director of the NHL Players’ Association, spoke in a manner that made another work stoppage seem inevitable after wrapping up important meetings with their constituents. They have no plans to return to the bargaining table before the deadline passes. Instead, it appears as if hockey will enter yet another work stoppage - with a source indicating that pre-season games will start being cancelled as soon as next week. Training camps scheduled to open Sept. 21 will also soon be a casualty, with the first regular- season games not too far be-

Fehr said the players made large concessions after the entire 2004-05 season was wiped out by a lockout. Since then, overall revenues have grown dramatically. He asked whether it was fair or equitable
that the owners want more concessions and reiterated that they will be the ones choosing to shut the doors. “The players want to find a way to make an agreement. They want to negotiate until we do,” Fehr, flanked by
many of the game’s top players, told a packed news conference. Sidney Crosby, Henrik Zetterberg, John Tavares, Zdeno Chara, Henrik Lundqvist, Daniel Alfredsson and Zach Parise were just a handful of the 283 players
Blue Jays dump Mariners 8-3 to avoid sweep Gregory Strong Canadian Press
TORONTO - Blue Jays slugger Edwin Encarnacion reached two milestones in Toronto’s 8-3 win over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night. He broke open the game in the fourth inning by hitting his 40th homer of the season, putting him over the 100-RBI mark for the year. Encarnacion didn’t hesitate when asked which number he’s most proud of. “Not many people make it to 100 RBIs so that’s the bigger thing
for me,” he said. Encarnacion, who became the sixth major leaguer to reach the 100-RBI mark this year, belted a three-run blast off Mariners starter Felix Hernandez (13-8) in the five-run frame. He’s the eighth Toronto player to reach the 40homer plateau, a feat that has been accomplished 11 times in franchise history. “This is a very good right-handed power hitter,” said Jays manager John Farrell. “And he’s having one heck of a year for us.” Encarnacion also
moved closer to Texas Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton, who led the major leagues with 41 homers entering play Thursday night. “I knew I could get 30, but not 40,” Encarnacion said. “I never thought I could get to 40 home runs but that was part of my work in the off-season and I want to continue to do the same. “I want to come back next year and try to hit 40 again.” Adam Lind also homered for Toronto (65-77) and Henderson Alvarez (9-12) pitched
seven effective innings for the victory. Hernandez lasted just four innings for Seattle (69-75) and tied a career high by giving up seven earned runs. “That was terrible right there,” Hernandez said. “If you throw a ball in the middle of the plate, they’re going to hit it. It’s on me. I have to do something. The last three starts have been disappointing.” It was Alvarez’s 14th quality start of the season. “He’s very happy knowing that he pitched
against one of the greatest pitchers and we got a chance to win the game tonight,” said a translator for Alvarez. Relievers Brad Lincoln and Aaron Loup worked an inning apiece as the Blue Jays salvaged the finale of the three-game set in front of 13,756 fans at Rogers Centre. Jeff Mathis tied a career high with four hits as Toronto outhit the Mariners 13-7. Lind gave Toronto the early lead with a two-run shot - his 10th homer of the year - in the first inning.
Two South Koreans share lead at British Open Associated Press
HOYLAKE, England - So Yeon Ryu won the U.S. Women’s Open last summer in Colorado and backed it up with a victory last month in the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic. The 22-year-old South Korean player made another big statement Thursday at Royal Liverpoool in her Women’s British Open debut, shooting a 2-under 70 for a share of the firstround lead with Haeji Kang. “After I won (in Toledo), I was a little more
relieved and that helped me a lot,” Ryu said. “How can I say, even when I was winning the U.S. Women’s Open, a lot of people said it might be just one tournament or just a dark horse like that. But after I won the Toledo championship, I broke that.” Coming off a victory last week in a Korean LPGA event, Ryu had five birdies and two bogeys in relatively calm conditions on the difficult links course. “This is my first time played in England, so I
never played this type of golf course,” Ryu said. “It’s really tough, but fun. Always the first experience, really fun and a little tough, but I want to enjoy this type of golf course. “Actually, Tuesday and Wednesday was so bad, so today feels like a really great weather. But you know, in Korea it was a little really strong wind, and a little different from this course. This wind might not be a bad wind. I think today the weather was really great.” The 2-under leading
score is the highest in the first round since the tournament became a major in 2002, in relatively calm conditions. The 21-year-old Kang, also from South Korea, had six birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey. “I hit it pretty good out there,” said Kang, winless on the LPGA Tour. “My iron shots were just inside 20 feet all the time, so I could just putt it out.” She hit 13 greens in regulation and needed only 27 putts in her
morning round. “Oh, it was much better this morning,” Kang said. “As soon as I made the turn, it started blow. But I played yesterday the practice round with the rain, also, so I’m ready.” Australia’s Karrie Webb, the tournament winner in 1995, 1997 and 2002, was a stroke back along with 16-year-old English amateur Charley Hull, Jiyai Shin, Ai Miyazato, Mika Miyazato, Stacey Keating, Lydia Hall, Vicky Hurst and Kate Kutcher.
who turned up in New York for two days of meetings. They emerged presenting a united front and spoke with the same calmness as Fehr, whom they hired in 2010 with the express purpose of getting a good deal in these negotiations. While the players would rather be preparing for training camp, Crosby indicated that they’re not willing to do it at any cost. “I know in my case not playing for as long as I did the last year and a half, I obviously want to play,” he said. “But I think you also have to realize that there’s principles here and you have to understand what’s right. “And I think we believe that what we propose is in that right direction. If you look at both (proposals), yeah they’re definitely different. But if you have a non-biased opinion, you look at the facts, I
think our mindset and the direction we’re going is one that seems like it’s a little bit more fair for both sides.” The sides returned to the negotiating table on Wednesday and each made adjustments to previous proposals. The owners asked players to cut their share of hockey-related revenue during a six-year proposal. Current industry revenue is pegged at US$3.3 billion annually. Initially, owners sought to drop the percentage given to players to 43 per cent from the current 57 per cent. They have since amended that to a deal that starts at 49 per cent the first year, drops to 48 per cent the next and is set at 47 per cent for the remaining four. The NHLPA is offering a package that starts at 54.3 per cent and ends at 52.7 per cent - something Fehr referred to as a “shared sacrifice.”
Leafs forward Lupul warns fans could get ‘fed up’ as lockout looms Kyle Cicerell a Canadian Press
TORONTO - With an NHL lockout looming, Joffrey Lupul had some advice for the owners and players working on a new collective bargaining agreement. Don’t forget the fans. “It’s important that we realize this affects a lot of people beside us,” the Toronto Maple Leafs winger said Thursday. “I’m a hockey fan myself and it sucks. There will be a point when fans start getting fed up. It’s frustrating so I can only imagine what someone else thinks, who doesn’t play in the NHL.” NHL owners and the
NHL Players’ Association both had internal meetings Thursday as labour talks continued, but there wasn’t any forward motion in reaching a new deal. The league has said it will lock players out if a new agreement isn’t in place by the time the current one runs out just before midnight on Saturday. In the event of a lockout, the NHL will suspend all league-related activities including access to team facilities, trainers and coaches. However, Lupul is still hopeful that progression can be made before training camps get scrapped.

Advocacy group complains about B.C.’s record on Freedom of Information requests Canadian Press
VANCOUVER — A group that advocates for government transparency has filed a complaint with B.C.’s information commissioner, pointing to a significant increase in cases where the province responds to freedom-of-information requests by claiming it couldn’t find any documents. The B.C. Freedom of Information and Privacy Association suggests the trend is either a reflection of a government that avoids keeping records to skirt the law or a sign the province isn’t releasing all the information it could.
The group used data posted to the government’s website to track cases in which the government determined it could not find any records to satisfy a freedom-of-information request. The numbers indicate such cases accounted for nearly a quarter of all requests in 2011-2012, compared with less than half a per cent in 2002-2003. For requests from the news media, that number jumps to 34 per cent, when there were no such cases in 2002-2003. The group’s executive director, Vincent Gogolek, says he wants the information commission to investigate.

Calgary police use tear gas to end standoff Canadian Press
CALGARY — A man is in custody after a 14-hour standoff with police at a home in Calgary. The standoff began early Wednesday afternoon after police got word about someone firing a pellet gun into the grassy area behind a northwest-area home. Investigators say a man barricaded
himself inside the residence and refused to come out when officers arrived at the scene. Several streets were cordoned off and people in the area were warned to stay inside their homes. Police feared there may have been more weapons in the residence and fired tear gas into the house before the man surrendered overnight.

Orca ‘grannies’ coddle their baby boys: study DENE MOORE Canadian Press
VANCOUVER — Like some of their human counterparts, killer whale mothers continue to dote on their sons well into adulthood, says a new study based on two pods of resident killer whales off the coast of British Columbia. That coddling appears to help the male orcas to mate and reproduce. The study released Thursday by the University of Exeter, in the United Kingdom, looked at more than three de-
cades of research by Fisheries and Oceans Canada in B.C. and the Center for Whale Research in Washington state, and found that orca females live many years after they are no longer capable of reproducing. “This long period of post-reproduction is not very common in mammals, outside of humans,’’ said Dr. John Ford, a research scientist at federal fisheries’ Pacific Biological Station. A female killer whale typically stops bearing offspring in her 40s and

Cougar tears man’s pants in Vancouver Island attack KE VEN DRE WS Canadian Press
VANCOUVER — Fearing for his life, a 38-year-old Vancouver Island man says he ran from the fangs and claws of a ravenous cougar and scaled a hefty piece of construction equipment in a desperate bid to escape. With his pants shredded by the cougar’s jaws and a shoe lost along the way thanks to a swipe from the animal’s claws, John Frank Jr. said he climbed a locked-up excavator’s boom and called for help on his radio. The community of Ahousat, B.C., located north of Tofino, B.C., on the island’s west coast, responded to Tuesday’s attack, with some residents arriving on scene in their trucks, scaring the cougar away. “I was attacked. There’s no two ways about it,’’ Frank said. “The cougar wanted to eat me as a meal. I’m not going to lie to you. I’m lucky to be alive today. God was on my side that day.’’ The incident took place at about 5:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday in an area where Frank had been working. Frank said he had left his VHF radio — an important means of communication in the community — on the excavator at his job site, so he returned to pick it up. After parking his vehicle, he walked to the excavator, picked up the radio and turned back, walking a few metres. Then Frank saw the cougar sitting on a 4.5-metre-tall embankment. Frank said he ran back to the excavator and jumped on its track, but couldn’t get inside because the door was locked. So he jumped on the machine’s other track, and that’s when the animal caught him mid-air, tearing his pants with its teeth. Knocked off balance by the animal, Frank said he landed on his right hip on the right track, which left him with a bruise. “I grabbed the railing for the excavator, pulled myself up onto the excavator, and as I was just pulling my leg over to get onto the excavator, it took a swipe and got my shoe.’’
That’s when the animal hissed at him and displayed its massive teeth, said Frank. Still trying to get away, Frank said he tried to climb the excavator’s boom, but dropped his radio on the top of its cab. He jumped back down, picked up his radio, scrambled back up on to the boom and called for help. Minutes later, local residents began to show up, and the cougar leapt up the same embankment it had jumped down from earlier before escaping into the rainforest. From start to finish, the attack only lasted three to five minutes, Frank said. “John junior was just shaking,’’ said his father, John Frank Sr., chief councillor of the First Nation, who arrived on scene after the attack. “He said, ‘This was the scariest feeling of my life. I thought for sure I was going to be eaten alive.’ That’s how scared he was.’’ Frank Sr. said that after the attack, the community held an emergency meeting. So many people were scared that the local school was closed Wednesday, he added. “They just felt we can’t take any chances,’’ he said. Insp. Ben York, a spokesman for the province’s Conservation Officer Service, said a conservation officer arrived in Ahousat at about 10 p.m. Tuesday and was joined by four officers and a volunteer houndsman Wednesday morning. Despite their efforts, the team was unable to pick up a scent trail and called off the search for the cougar by 1 p.m, he said. Frank Sr. said he believes the cougar is now far to the west of the community. To show their thanks, he said the community held a special ceremony after the attack to thank God for sparing his son’s life. “I’m grateful. I’m really grateful. I’m happy everything turned out the way it turned out after,’’ he said. “It could have been a lot worse.’’
lives, on average, another decade. Ford said whale researchers believe they can live as much as another 50 years. Using the census data collected off the Pacific coast since 1974, researchers at the University of Exeter were able to model the lifespans of the 300-plus members of the northern and southern pods of resident killer whales and found that these whale grannies have lit-
tle effect on their adult daughters but a profound effect on the survival of sons. “We have discovered that female killer whales have evolved the longest menopause of any nonhuman species so they can care for their adult sons,’’ Emma Foster, the lead author of the paper, said in an email interview. By looking at the Canadian and American whale census data, Foster and her colleagues
found that for a male orca over 30, the death of his mother results in an almost 14-fold increase in his own death within the next year. The effect on female offspring’s reproductive success was negligible. Why that is remains something of a mystery, Foster said, because whales are difficult to observe under water where they spend the majority of their lives. “However, we have a few ideas about what could be going on here we can speculate that they may provide help with foraging, or sup-
port during encounters with other whales,’’ she said. “This is something we hope to explore in the future.’’ It’s an intriguing addition to the growing book of knowledge about the stunning black-and-white ocean mammals, Ford said. “In the case of killer whales, it’s the first time it’s been shown that there is a positive effect of the grannies on, ultimately, their son’s survival and the number of offspring that the son will sire,’’ he said. This year’s orca census is currently underway.

Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I am a teenager in high school with two close friends, “Emma” and “Vienna.” Emma was recently diagnosed with OCD and bipolar disorder. Ever since the diagnosis, there have been many conflicts. Emma is now really sensitive, and if Vienna or I say anything even mildly offensive, she gets super-angry. This past summer, we all worked at a local kids’ camp. When one of the instructors joked around, Emma took it seriously and became upset. She then talked with the instructor and his boss. All I know is that it didn’t end well, and Emma quit. I will often get a call from Emma saying she is lonely and needs someone to talk to. She likes to reminisce, regretting things she said and did in the past. I try to comfort her by keeping her company. I have just started a new high school and am no longer with Emma and Vienna. Emma insists that I will ditch them for new friends, making them both feel like they have done something wrong. Vienna and I know we can’t begin to understand what it’s like to have both OCD and bipolar disorder, but we can’t live like this. We are always worrying about Emma and don’t know what to do. -- A Worried Friend Dear Friend: Those with bipolar disorder often have periods of depression. If Emma also has OCD, she may become fixated on certain negative thoughts during these times. While you can be reassuring and supportive, there is only so much you can do to combat Emma’s innate doubts. We trust that her parents are making sure that she is getting appropriate medical care. Please try to be patient with her, but understand that not all friendships survive high school. Dear Annie: I know you’ve covered this topic before, but please do it again. I work in a small office. One person douses herself in perfume. It makes my eyes water and my nose run, and sometimes I have sneezing fits. Everyone comments about it behind her back, but no one will bring it up to her face, although I have casually mentioned it to her in conversation a few times. Why don’t people understand that the workplace is not the place to overdo the strong scents? They should save it for their husbands or boyfriends at home. Years ago, my doctor told me he had a patient who was so sensitive to scents that she had an allergic attack and died -- right in the hospital. My doctor now makes his employees sign a letter of agreement not to wear any type of cologne or perfume to work, or it could be grounds for dismissal. Please tell these people that although they may believe they smell great, they actually reek. -- Suffocating in Louisville Dear Suffocating: Some folks have a diminished sense of smell and do not realize how strong their perfume is. Those who insist on wearing a scent should remember that a drop is sufficient. And with so many folks suffering from allergies these days, one really must be careful. If you have supervisors or a human resources department, please ask whether a notice can go out suggesting that employees not wear perfumes. Otherwise, approach your co-worker and say, “I’m sure you don’t realize how overpowering your cologne is. I have terrible allergies and am very sensitive. Could you please not wear it at the office?” Dear Annie: You printed responses to the letter from “Speechless in Omaha,” whose friend never stopped talking. When I read the original letter, I recognized myself. I am a 90-year-old woman who lives alone. My health is not the best, and sometimes there are weeks when I speak to no one. It’s a lonely life. One day, it suddenly dawned on me that I was doing all of the talking when out with friends. Now I make sure that doesn’t happen. Perhaps the friend does not realize what she is doing. -- A Lonely Great-Aunt Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Cranbrook celebrates International Peace Day
In
1981, the United Nations established the International Day of Peace, which was celebrated for the first time on September 21, 1982, to coincide with the opening of the General Assembly of the United Nations. According to the resolution, “Peace Day should be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples ... This day will serve as a reminder to all peoples that our organization, with all its limitations, is a living instrument in the service of peace and should serve all of us here within the organization as a constantly pealing bell reminding us that our permanent commitment, above all interests or differences of any kind, is to peace.” The purpose of this day is to create a culture of peace in which we learn to live out Martin Luther King Jr’s vision that “Peace is not
merely a distant goal that we seek, but is the means by which we arrive at that goal.” We will mark this day in Cranbrook on Friday, September 21 with a celebration at Peace Park in Idlewild Park at 7 p.m.
munity or government engaged in a large event. PLANT, Lenore (Blanche Alice)
Peacefully in her eightysecond year, Lenore passed away September 4th after a valiant struggle with Alzheimer’s. Originally from Kimberley, Lenore lived in Toronto then relocated to Woodstock, Ontario where she ran a small catering business. Always a superb cook and hostess, Christmas dinner at her home was a highlight for the family during many holiday seasons. She is predeceased by her parents (Violet and Alexander Massie) and brother “Sonny” Howard Innis and a number of much-loved cocker spaniel companions. She is survived by her sister Sandra Schurman (Dave Schurman), daughters Barbara Hunter (Dean Hall) and Lynn Materick (Wayne Materick), two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces. Cremation has taken place and a private family gathering will be held to celebrate Lenore’s life.

Some of the members of the Cranbrook Committee for Peace recently met with Mayor, Wayne Stetski to proclaim September 21 International Day of Peace in Cranbrook. This prestigious day will be celebrated at Idlewild Peace Park with festivities beginning at 7 p.m., Friday evening, September 21. A full slate of entertainment by young and old will be presented. Come and join this joyous celebration culminating in a candle light ceremony. Left to right: Gerry Robbie, Mila Siguenza, Mayor Wayne Stetski, Eileen Braaten solidarity with all the earth’s creatures, with wind and water and earth. The third is “peace year round”. We make a long term commitment to live peacefully in the world. We join with others to create a culture of peace, a climate in which peace can thrive as we learn to live together amid the wonderful variety and diversity that characterizes our world.
This Friday, millions of people all around the world will join together to celebrate peace in many different ways: ringing peace bells, lighting candles, gathering for a minute of silence at noon. Here in Cranbrook, we invite you to join us as we gather at 7 p.m. at the Peace Park in Idlewild Park for a time of singing, dancing and prayers for peace. This will be a day of
ceasefire, both personal and political. Imagine a whole day of ceasefire: a day when rocks will not be thrown, bullets will not be fired, and bombs will not be detonated; a day when insults will not be traded, punches will not be thrown, and harsh comments will stay unuttered; a day when men and women, children and seniors, politicians and soldiers will work together for the advent
of peace. An ancient prayer asks, “Dona nobis pacem”. Give us peace. Give us hearts that long for peace, so that pious prayers might become acts of justice and hope. Perhaps we can begin with this celebration at Idlewild Park. Friday at 7 p.m. Join us. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook
House of Hope offering October conference on ‘Normal Christian Life’ C at hy Pr e t t y
House of Hope is happy to be hosting a Fall conference with Bob Johnson and Team from Bethel Church in
Redding, California. We will be challenged with what a Normal Christian Life really is. Bob is an international speaker and a fifth generation minister. He and his wife Kimberly have a heart and a passion to love the lost and equip the Body of Christ to become all God created them to be. Their ministry recently relocated from San Francisco where their team loved the unlovely for over 12 years. They are nowbased out of Redding, where they have teamed up with Bethel Church to combat human trafficking in the areas of prevention, rescue and restoration. Bob has made “Jesus to the World” his life message and through
experience and diligence has learned the significance of this. He preaches this message all over the world with the same response. That response is one of overwhelming freedom and an excitement to evangelize and train up disciples. He is able to communicate in a way that is revelatory and yet very practical for everyone who listens. He has come to learn that if you can just give someone a taste of Jesus (Taste and see that the Lord is good Psalm 34:8), they will be forever changed. Bob and Kimberly are taking their ministry to new levels by working to get children out of sex slavery overseas, as well as creating semi-
nars to teach the Body of Christ to achieve goals through understanding the power of the Holy Spirit within each of them.Through equipping the individual to become who they we’re created to be, they believe the Body as a whole will rise up into it’s destiny. Please come and celebrate with us. Everyone is welcome! Location: House of Hope 121-7th Ave. S. Cranbrook Schedule: Friday 7pm, Saturday 9:30 a.m. and 7 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. Cost: No cost for the weekend. Offerings will be received Registration: Please register on line at: www. ihopecranbrook.ca

Obituaries Sidney Carter December 23, 1921 – September 10, 2012
Sid was born at home near Lorette, Manitoba the only child of Ben and Louise Carter. They moved to BC in the 1930’s to farm in the Fraser Valley, where he met his future wife Isobel. Sid worked as a welder on the installation of oil and gas pipelines throughout BC and Alberta. After at 9 years of moving from place to place, Sid settled in Cranbrook with his family in 1960 and started working for Alberta Natural Gas (ANG). Sid never lost touch with his farming roots and maintained a ourishing hobby farm. He had a mechanical mind and always rose to the challenge to ďŹ x anything, or invent a better solution. A generation ahead of his time, Sid did not believe in gender discrimination. He ensured all of his family, children and grandchildren, were familiar with mechanics and farming. Sid and Isobel were avid travelers traversing the globe well into their retirement. Sid was predeceased by his wife, Isobel, in 2003 and is survived by his children, Elaine (Dennis) Whieldon, Don Carter, and Diane (Dave) Hern, grandchildren, Neil (Maureen) Whieldon, Doug (Shannon) Whieldon, and Christine Doe, great grandchildren Dylan and Davis Whieldon. A celebration of Sid’s life will occur at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com

Wayneâ€?Oleâ€? Johnson Oct. 2, 1942 - Aug. 22, 2012 The Johnson and Kelln families said good-bye to our dear husband, father and grand-father Wayneâ€?Oleâ€? He left to carry on his joy for life - his loving wife[of 44years]Dianne, daughter Tarina[Travis]Kelln, son Wade[Brittany] and 2 beautiful grand-daughters Mackenzie and Reilly. Also his brother Karl[Jan], sister Margaret, Joe and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Karl, mother Rose, sisters Reta,Marge, Elve, Ume, Florence and Viola, and brother Reuben. Ole was very proud of his children and was always willing and happy to lend a helping hand. The majority of his teaching career was spent in Cranbrook, B.C. where he developed strong and lasting bonds with fellow teachers and students. On his retirement, he and Dianne moved to their cabin on Kootenay Lake which became home to family and friends. He embraced the relaxed lifestyle amongst beauty and friendships. He will be remembered for his love and involvement in sports especially fastball, slow-pitch and golf, and greatly valued the camaraderie he developed. He was very involved in his Community, acting as a Director at the Riondel Golf Course and Treasurer of the Vista Hermossa HOA in Florence Az. OLDS, Alta. — A highly valued stallion has been killed and another severely injured in what officials from an Alberta agriculture college call a senseless act of animal cruelty. One or more people went into the horse stables at Olds College on the weekend and released several stallions into a common area. Tanya McDonald, dean of animal sciences, says a vicious fight ensued and one of the horses was killed. She says the RCMP have been called to investigate. McDonald says the horses are an integral part of the college’s
equine science program. It offers two-year diplomas in a range of disciplines, including equine reproduction. Officials are not revealing the identities of the animals, because they don’t want to interfere with the RCMP’s investigation. A Crime Stoppers reenactment is being created to encourage people who have information to report what they know to police. Olds College is open to the public, so students and others have some access to the areas where horses are housed, McDonald said. She did not have any idea who would commit such an act or why.

two sides of the fluoridated water debate was argued before city council decides on Oct. 29. James Beck, a professor of medical biophysics at the University of Calgary, said fluoride is ineffective in fighting cavities, unsafe and unethical. He discounted studies that showed fluoride prevents cavities and not harmful to health. Dr. Digby Horne, chief medical officer of health for the Central Zone, argued that water fluoridation is a safe and cost-effective method of reducing dental caries or cavities. Horne said the cavities are an important health issue and there is
no better alternative to fluoride. “At this point several reviews have looked at potential health concerns,’’ said Horne. “There’s nothing definite. They are saying nothing definite at this time. There’s no negative health affects that we are aware of at this time.’’ Fluoridation of Red Deer’s public water supply was mandated by a plebiscite that was held in the 1950s. The water treatment plant is legally required to continue this practice until administration is directed by council to apply for an amendment to the province.
