ICBC staff to strike SUMMER Specials

SAVINGS 40% OFF!

The Canadian Of¿ce and Professional Employees Union, Local 378 (COPE 378) announced today that over 1,500 members at 55 claims-related Insurance Corporation of BC (ICBC) locations will be taking strike action on Tuesday, September 18, 2012. The Cranbrook ICBC of¿ce will take part in the strike. Nearly 1,200 workers will be on strike in the lower mainland, and the remaining 300 will be in communities throughout the rest of B.C. This newest job action is part of an escalating strategy aimed at getting ICBC back to the table. ICBC’s last offer was a two percent wage increase over a four year contract, far below the rising cost of living. Most of the locations that will be on strike on September 18 were not part of last week’s joint strike with the PEA and BCGEU. Essential Service levels will be maintained at all striking locations. COPE 378 represents 4,600 workers at ICBC.

Freedom from Gout the Natural Way

An attack of gout can come without warning, causing excruciating pain and swelling in one or more joints.Typically affecting middle aged men, gout can be hereditary and is more common in those with obesity, high blood pressure and heart disease. Gout is a type of arthritis in which uric acid crystals collect in the joint (often the base of the big toe, an ankle or knee) and produce swelling and intense, needle-like jabs of pain. These symptoms may last from a few days to a few weeks. Many gout suffers do have a relapse of symptoms, and those with chronic cases may require medical attention to prevent damage to joints, tendons and kidneys.

Natural Relief from Time-Bested Remedies

Gout has been responsible for a lot of pain and distress through the centuries, and many remedies that brought by our ancestors relief are still used today. Generally, effective remedies are those that help improve kidney function, ease inflammation and decrease uric acid levels in the blood. The following natural herbs and vitamins are among the most popular and effective gout remedies.

Black Cherry Powder Extract

Rocky Mountain

The Industry Leader in

Pro Drivers Professional Driver Training Inc.

A study back in 1950 found that eating a half-pound of cherries or the equivalent amount of cherry juice prevented attacks of gout in a small group ms with black cherry. of patients. Since then, there have been countless anecdotal reports of easing gout symptoms

Thyme and Peppermint

Research shows that thyme contains a valuable component called thymol, which accounts for its reduction of the rheumatic pain of gout.Thyme also has diuretic properties, allowing the kidneys to more effectively id the body of excess uric acid. Mint, another age-old herbal remedy, has diuretic properties and contains Xanthine oxidase inhibitors to help reduce uric acid levels and speed up recovery.

Celery Seed Powder

Research shows that celery helps neutralize acids, including gout producing uric acid. Celery is also a very effective diuretic, again to aid the kidneys in flushing excess uric acid.

Airbrakes September 21 - 22 - 23

Vitamin C (Calcium Ascorbate)

Studies show that vitamin C reduces uric acid levels form blood and tissues. In one study, individuals taking Vitamin C had an increase urine excretion of uric acid within only a few hours. Those taking a higher dose showed further reductions in blood uric acid levels.

Home Improvement and Renovations Domotics – building a smart home Submitted Domotics, or home automation, is increasingly popular and includes such things as building techniques, IT, electronics, and telecommunications. Not only does it add to the comfort, energy ef¿ciency, and security of a home but domotics also increases market value. Equipping a home with a domotics system requires the installation of a network of electrical cables linked to a central computer. Remote access to the system is possible with a telephone modem. A tactile screen or a digital tablet allows home owners to program the functioning of a wide variety of electrical appliances. Home automation features are much easier to

integrate if the cabling and extra add-on junction boxes are installed when the residence is being built. Just having the basic functions installed at ¿rst helps home owners become familiar with the use of this system. There will always be the opportunity to add new options at a later date. The most common basic functions include integrating the lighting, heating, and security

nized blinds that will adjust automatically, depending on the time of day, and a home cinema synchronized with the sound system. Domotics also allows home owners to regulate everything of an electrical or electronic nature in the home, including preheating the oven, controlling a gas ¿replace, or closing windows in case of rain.

Leave nothing to chance La Dolce Vita By Lorne Eckersley

Among my very favourite wine experiences this year has been the chance to talk with and meet Judy Kingston. She is the owner of Serendipity Winery, a new enterprise close to the village of Naramata that opened last year. Kingston is a former technology lawyer and a French-trained chef. She decided to make a career change and bought the Naramata Bench property, which was then mostly planted to orchard. The acreage was re-landscaped to better accommodate rows of grapevies and the early results are impressive, indeed. When I ¿rst spoke to Kingston by telephone earlier this year, one story illustrated how something that could go badly wrong can also go incredibly right when one has a positive attitude. Winemaker Jason Parkes had an accident that put his leg in a cast just before last fall’s harvest. But he and Kingston worked out a plan the harvest and vintage worked out perfectly. “So my 12th crush turned out to be one of my favourites,” he said. Parkes also made another telling comment, saying that Kingston is completely devoted to quality. “Just make the best wines we can” is her instruction to him. Kingston admits she has been a bit spoiled, having daughter Katie O’Kell working with

her for parts of the last three years, but Katie is now off to university to pursue a law degree, so Judy and Jason will have to get by without her valuable help. For someone who has spent many years behind a desk, Kingston has adapted well to the physical labour involved in running a vineyard and winery. When we visited this summer she came trotting down out of the vineyard to greet us, keeping an eye out for visitors while checking out the health of the vines. Inside the winery we had a great visit and as we made our way through a tasting of everything she had available, we were impressed by her attention to detail and very educational approach to explaining the wines, how they were made and what kinds of food they pair best with. Although I had earlier subscribed to a Serendipity Wine Club membership, I couldn’t pick up my ¿rst shipment because a foul-up with her bottle order had forced a delay in bottling. My order was delivered as promised, though, a few weeks later, and the six bottles are now sitting in the cellar, waiting for suitable occasions to try them. We found Serendipity’s red wines to be extremely satisfying. Single variety wines-Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc, all private reserves--are made in small quantities and each was a delight. Serenata (a name I love

because one of the family members who own a farm we stayed at in Tuscany a few years ago shares the name), a Bordeaux blend, is outstanding. Two years in oak, with extended lees contact, have helped make this a wine that will age nicely in the cellar for years to come. BC wine writer John Schreiner gave it the 2009 private reserve a score of 91-93. When we visited Serendipity, Kingston was brutally honest—she has come to understand that she can’t hope to make a pro¿t with her current production level and commitment to quality. She has been working to contract other growers to provide grapes that meet her high expectations so that she can increase production. Quality is something she isn’t willing to compromise on, obviously. Potential wine club members shouldn’t be scared off—there are three different membership levels, and Tier One doesn’t require any commitment to purchase wine. It comes with a monthly newsletter and gives members the option of purchasing limited edition, small production wines. I’m so impressed with the wines that I signed on as a Tier Three member, which includes a sixbottle selection three times a year. For more information about Serendipity Winery, wine sales and wine club memberships, go to www.serendipitywinery.com.

A short economics lesson on the virtues of buying local

A short economics lesson on the virtues of buying local The start of a new school year is the perfect occasion to give your children a short lesson that will be a good investment in the local economy. Make the most of the back to school shopping blitz to raise your children’s awareness of the many bene¿ts of shopping locally. There’s only one condition for turning this intensive training into a resounding success: you just have to buy all school supplies and clothing items from businesses near you. When shopping with your children at local stores for stationery, books, school bags, clothes, shoes, sporting equipment, and electronics, mention to your kids that when local people frequent these stores they are helping to create jobs and incomes for others in their town. Bring to your children’s attention the fact that if these businesses remain pro¿table, one day they might be the source of a summer job or even, at a later date, a fulltime job that will allow them to stay in the town they grew up in.If your children have busy schedules, they’ll appreciate that shopping close to home will save lots of •Lumber•Tools•Fixtures•Finishing products•Mouldings travelling time. A few weeks ago we gave Kirby a Stem Cell treatment. This was mainly meant for an arthritic joint in his leg. Now, three weeks later not only is his leg better but we are having to reduce his insulin dose. Kirby is a diabetic and had been on the same twice daily dose for over a year. Now, we are giving half the dose we were and he is more active, sleeps all night long without a 3 am "bathroom" call and even his cataracts have become less pronounced. This certainly was not an expected outcome, but it sure is welcome. Stem Cell treatments theoretically can treat any number of conditions, but the FDA has only approved arthritis treatments a labels indication. I see Kirby everyday, but I would think he is less grey too. Offered at Eureka Hospital.

Fight for Families

Jenna Homeniuk F o u r t e e n - y e a r- o l d Jenna Homeniuk was diagnosed with Leukemia on August 19. She is receiving intensive treatment at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, and will not be home for quite some time. This year’s Fight for Families Sparathon —Fisher Peak Challenge, will be dedicated to Jenna and organizers ask you to please help raise funds to assist her and her family by either sponsoring us, donating by coming to watch the event (admission by donation) and or buying one of Jenna’s of¿cial support Tee-Shirts. Participants spar carefully, without aggression and with the minimum of contact in the spirit of helping each other grow and develop physical skills, mental discipline and spiritual growth. If done correctly with the correct attitude and spirit, any person, child or adult, woman or man, should be able to work hard and enjoy their developing skills together with a minimum of injury, if any at all. The sparrathon is a “Sparring Marathon” with 48 x 60 second rounds to equal the amount of meters in height of “Fisher Peak”. The rounds will be one after another, continuously with 15 seconds in between each round to change sparring partners. It is estimated that most of the participants will burn around 1000 calories while attempting to complete this challenge. The entire proceeds will go to help Jenna. The event happens on Saturday, September 22nd at 11 a.m. in Selkirk High School Gymnasium in Kimberley.

Riverside HE’S BACK!! putting CHRIS WOOD course now open ENGINES The City of Kimberley is excited to announce the completion of the Riverside Putting Course at the Kimberley Riverside Campground. The objective of the course was to create a unique recreational amenity that compliments the natural beauty of the area, allowing the best of golfers to hone their skills while still being accessible and enjoyable to all ages and skill levels. The state of the art putting course is designed to look like a miniature 18-hole golf course -- complete with sand bunkers, fringe grass, landscaping beds, ponds, streams, waterfalls, and natural rock tiers. According to Mayor Ron McRae “The course is one more reason for campers and visitors to the area to stay another day, as well as a great new amenity for all the public to enjoy.â€? “We worked hard to Âżnd a team to get exactly what we wanted,â€? says, Campground Manager Jarret Bell “We wanted it to look and feel like a real golf course.â€? The course is compact, with an elevation drop of about 14 feet east to west. The greens, gently sloping down the hill, are surrounded by trees with a mountain view at the west end. There are tiers and layers, uphills, downhills and doglegs. And even with the elevation change, it’s fully wheelchair accessible. Bell says a round should take approximately an hour and the cost per round is only $10 for an adult or $29 for a family of four. There are affordable rates for children, youth and seniors as well. The project is made possible through funding provided by the provincial Resort Municipality Infrastructure Program and the Kimberley Community Development Society capital reserve. The Kimberley Community Development Society fosters community, historical, cultural, and recreational attractions in the City of Kimberley. The Riverside Putting Course is located at the Kimberley Riverside Campground, within City limits along the scenic St. Mary Lake Road.

Biological mix-up and allergy Why is it that some people develop allergic reactions to normal and non-harmful substances? Take cat dander, hay, ragweed or even dust as examples. What is about these substances that triggers the body to react with such bothersome and sometimes life threatening symptoms? One theory of how this happens revolves around the polluted world we now live in. Sadly, our planet is so polluted with toxins that even newborn babies arrive with at least 200 man-made chemicals in their blood. We are constantly exposed to electro-magnetic radiation from wifi, cell phones, radio waves, satellites and the list goes on and on. Consider what might happen if the body is simultaneously exposed to a normal substance (say cat dander) and a flame retardant or a heavy metal or a cell phone frequency. It is possible that the body might mistakenly “learn that cat dander is a toxic substance and react accordingly.

If you think this is farfetched, think about how you have reacted when stressed. Perhaps you have been in an accident and are anxious about driving again. Or maybe you have had food poisoning from potato salad and now even the thought of it makes you feel sick (this happens to me from peach schnapps from a fool-hardy teenage experience). A child who is physically abused will associate the room or the chair they are hurt in with injury and want to avoid those places. Clearly, the body holds strong memory from stressful events in the past that translate through to non-threatening experiences today. This same type of stress translation happens in the development of allergy and is treatable. Using a simple, noninvasive treatment it is possible to reset the body’s response to any natural and non-harmful substance it is reacting to, cats and peach schnapps included. This approach is called BIE or biological intolerance elimination.

Personalized workouts At Sattva Training Centre we

create a personalised workout that ¿ts effortlessly into your lifestyle, allowing you to be active anytime and anywhere: Sattva Training Centre workouts are adapted speci¿cally for you. An in-depth free consultation ensures that your program is perfectly tailored to suit your needs. We start by taking physical measurements in order to create a program that will balance your posture, then we create an exercise plan for you that is speci¿cally designed to improve your overall well being and increase performance in your job, activity, or sport. We also create workouts that are adaptable to your material needs. We create programs for people who have minimal equipment, or for those going away on vacation when transporting equipment becomes impractical (have you ever tried to ¿t a stability ball in your suitcase?) or even for people who simply want to exercise outside to enjoy the nice weather (yes! you do not have to be cooped up at home or in the gym). Let us know your speci¿c needs and we will adapt a program that will work with your environment, with your available equipment, or at the gym. Sattva Training Centre uses a Chek approved exercise database and our training system is fully interactive. All you need is an internet connection and you can view online videos to refresh your memory of a particular exercise or print off your workouts with pictures and a step by step guide, allowing you to classify exercises in the order that they appear in the workout or to print as supersets, circuits etc. Explanations about how to perform each exercise can also be found below the pictures. This system allows clients to bring their workouts anywhere whether they go to the gym, on vacation or simply decide to workout in their basement. The workout plans provided are totally Àexible, so if changes need to be made because a client goes on vacation, because the workout has evolved (clients gained strength or needed to change a few exercises because their body adapted), or simply to switch the workout up a little to relieve boredom, we can revise the program within a few hours. For more information about the packages and programs we offer at Sattva Training Centre, please feel free to contact me at 250-464-4046 or e-mail me at sattvatraining@gmail.com and book your free consultation.
