The old community caboose has been around Princeton for quite some time. What started out as a thought for the late Stan Thompson years ago, became reality. Thompson thought that Princeton should have a caboose, so he ended up getting one. (Actually, the story is told that Stan ordered the caboose and sort of forgot about it until one day, it showed up in town!) He paid a small fee for the caboose and as they say, the rest is history. The caboose has had a few homes in Princeton; on the Museum grounds, at the Chamber as the Visitor Center and at the fair grounds —eventually making its way to ownership by the Vermilion Trail Society (VTS) and it’s permanent home along the Kettle Valley Railway. (KVR) The society wanted the caboose as they felt it would help to preserve the history of the KVR. Each time the caboose was moved, it was moved by Stan Thompson, Rollo Ceccon and crews. Bob Hart and Judy Short researched and obtained the information on the caboose that had traversed this area, in order to have Princeton’s caboose restored so it could represent the original. Edith from Princeton Paint and Decorating was able to match the paint to give the caboose it’s proper colouring. Earlier this year, VTS underwent a change in executive. Wendy Bentley became director in charge of the caboose as it was a project she really wanted to see completed. Bentley along with the help of
Contributed
VTS members and other volunteers got to work as soon as the weather warmed and made it possible. Sanding, caulking, priming and painting as well as repairs has resulted in an impressive looking piece of history. “ I am very pleased and a huge thank you goes out to all the people who helped with this project,” said Bentley. “An extra special thanks to professional painter, Wayne Hooper for his interest and dedication in seeing this project to completion.” VTS hopes to someday have the caboose operate as a trail information center.
Take a hike with the Vermilion Forks Field Naturalists Contributed Janis Wright
The Vermilion Forks Field Naturalists hosted two field trips this August. The first one, led by Linda Neumann, was to Wolfe Lake. A couple of folks brought their kayaks, while some members stayed to have a picnic lunch. It was a lovely day, as was the day of the walk around Charles and Bev Webber’s sheep and hay farm. Tip Anderson led the group around the back of the property, relating interesting history of his family and others who once lived in the area. Bev talked about her sheep and her duties around the place, and informed the group that the animals are used not only for wool, but as breeding stock as well. No wild-
life was seen on either field trip, but both outings were immensely enjoyable. The next field trip will be led by Tip Anderson on Saturday, October 6th. This will be a moderate hike behind the golf course. Please phone Tip at 295-3369 to confirm attendance and meet at Billy’s Restaurant parking lot at 10:00 am. Next month’s meeting, on October 9th, features John Neville, the current president of BC Nature and longtime provider of sound guides for bird identification, whose presentation will be on Canadian raptors. As always, the public is welcome to attend our hikes and meetings, the latter of which take place at Riverside Centre on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00. Please join us!

Sizzlefest enjoyed by hundreds Hundreds turned out Saturday to enjoy the 11th annual Sizzlefest in Keremeos. This year’s highly successful event was aided by a strong advertising campaign and glorious late summer weather. In bottom photo, crowds gather to watch the Sear Factor Chili Pepper eating contest. Photo right, local tie-dye talent Nicki McIvor and her daughter Jessica ventured out to the festival with Nicki’s fashions. “it was a successful and fun weekend,” said McIvor, “I’ll be more than happy to go back!”

Keremeos / Okanagan Falls Review
Residents of the South Okanagan and Lower Similkameen awoke to a smoky pall hanging over their respective valleys on Friday, September 14 as wildfires burn in Washington State and the remains of a wildfire continued to burn in the Keremeos area. The wildfire began around 7:30 p.m. on September 13, apparently after a mower struck a rock and sparked some dry grass. According to a Keremeos firefighter, the blaze caused some anxious moments, racing up the steep slope of Pincushion Mountain. Fortunately for the Keremeos department and about 22 personnel from the BC Forest Service, light winds and low fuel loads on the mountain’s rocky slopes helped crews keep the blaze in check. Michaela Swan , B.C. Fire Information Officer with B.C. Forest Service said that the fire burned in grass and sage and displayed aggressive surface fire behaviour, rating it a Rank Two, vigorous surface fire. In addition to forestry’s 22 firefighters, one dozer and one water truck also attended the scene. Friday morning a new forestry crew replaced the initial crew, who currently have the fire 50 per cent contained. A helicopter was brought in for a brief period Friday morning, and the latest mapping imagery
showed the fire at 16.5 hectares on Friday afternoon. The homes near the wildfire were not imminently threatened. Keremeos firefighters worked the fire until early Friday morning, leaving the scene around 1 p.m. By Friday morning, a small amount of smoke could be seen emanating from a small stand of pine trees a few hundred metres above Herder’s vineyard. A small forestry crew could be seen performing mop up. By Monday morning, September 17, Swan reported that a “three pack” of firefighters continued to work the fire, in patrol mode. A few hot spots had been worked over the weekend, and patrolling will continue at least until a further scan of the area is taken in the coming week. “There was a great response from local and forestry firefighters on this event,” Swan said, advising once again for residents to be careful with fire, as the fire danger rating remains high in the Lower Similkameen. Unseasonably warm and sunny weather is expected to continue through the coming week. No structures were involved in the fire, nor has there been any crop damage reported. Keremeos has been bookended by wildfires this year. In early June, a wildfire burned several hectares above the orchards on Puddinghead Mountain, just above Bypass Road.

Regional District 2012 Citizen’s Survey Results Released The Regional District is making progress in their effort to improve the customer experience of their citizens The Regional District conducted a survey to measure the satisfaction of citizens in the eight electoral areas in June of this year and released the results of the survey earlier today. “A Key Success Indicator for our organization is to improve the customer experience” stated Dan Ashton, Chair of the Regional District. “We gather this information so the Board can make informed decisions about where to best apply our resources in the future to make the biggest difference for our citizens”. The Regional District surveys citizens in its electoral areas every second year. 400 residents were randomly selected to share their opinions and ideas about the Regional District as their local government with respect to Quality of Life, Service Satisfaction, Environment, Communications, Information Technology, and Fiscal Responsibility. The survey is accurate within +/- 4.9 percent at the 95 percent confidence level. Overall satisfaction ratings indicated 77 percent of our residents rate the quality of life in their community as excellent. 71 percent rate it as an excellent place to raise children, and 80 percent rate the Regional District as an excellent place to retire. 63 percent agree the Regional District is doing a good job overall. 62 percent of our citizens believe they get good value for taxes paid. When asked, 73 percent of our citizens prefer that we offer the same level of service at the same level of taxation while 7 percent would prefer that we reduce the current level of service. Asked whether they might support a tax increase, 17 percent said they would support an increase for increased service. Chair Dan Ashton said the survey results are an important part of the Regional District’s Strategic Plan. “The Regional District Board and staff will use this feedback to guide the organization’s decision-making and financial planning processes”. As a next step in the Citizen Survey process, the Regional District will now review the statistical and narrative results and determine areas that need to be addressed. This information is used in the Strategic Planning and Budgeting processes for the Board. The complete report on the 2012 Citizen Survey is available for download from the Regional District website at www.rdos.bc.ca. SpotlightOPINION Lock out—what a shame Lisa Carleton lisa@similkameenspotlight.com
The second lockout in seven years—what a shame! Now, don’t get me wrong here, this is not pitty for the owners or the players. The people whom I feel for are the fans...(and yes, I do like to watch the Canucks play and I am a huge BC Lions fan) those devoted people who look forward to watching their favourites perform on the ice. I feel for the individuals who are loosing work in the sports pubs, hotels and merchandise stores. I think it is very sad that history continues to repeat itself—some things just never change. Greed never seems to go away, people continue to think of just themselves, ignoring what happens in the world around them. Sport stars get paid a great deal of money as do the team owners. The players do deserve to be paid very well I believe, after all they do take all the physical risk. But, does anyone really need to make millions per year? — Really? The fans have supported and paid the ticket prices to see the games, providing the continually growing amounts of income to both players and owners. I wonder if that is ever taken into consideration? Let’s hope that greed gets in check soon and these folks remember back when they started and why. “For the love of the game...” I hope. Well, in the meantime fans, if you are looking for some hockey action to tide you over. Check out your team games at the local arena. They may not be NHL stars yet, but they are stars in the making and it won’t cost you a fortune to see a great game right at home.

Health care has never been a business! Mz. Clark: It’s September now, and change is in the air, you have made several in your working environment. Not sure I agree with all of your choices, then again your choices are becoming somewhat limited these days. Those changes may have slowed that sinking feeling the papers talk about but it doesn’t do anything for our emergency room closures here in Princeton. As you very well know through past letters and phone calls, our emergency room is closed four nights a week. You may also recall that the residents here find this unacceptable considering the 24/7 shifts that run at both mill and mine sites. The 3rd busiest highway in the province, a large senior population, and the constitution of this country ought to be viable enough reasons why we need the emergency room open 24/7. I realize that the I.H.A. reasoned that there wasn’t enough ‘business’ to keep our E.R. open, but let me remind you that health care has never been a business. You can play the economy card in other realms but not health. Not in Canada, we are far too rich a nation to deprive anyone of their guaranteed rights. The constitution of this country says the federal & Provincial governments are committed to: (c) providing essential public services of reasonable quality to all Canadians. * * Are you prepared
to tell anyone in British Columbia that this does not apply to them? It’s clear repetition works, our southern neighbors still use it effectively enough. I’ve watched Canadian politicians ‘stick to the story’ repeatedly. It’s just laziness really. Allow me to demonstrate. The emergency room in Princeton remains closed four nights a week. See, simple & easy. A different take would be, we’re waiting for a simple contingency plan to be completed by I.H.A. It seems finding doctors is beyond their realm of ability. A bit alarming considering their authority status on all things health related. Like a plumber who seems to have misplaced the pipes...or a political party in search of its principals. Mz. Clark, our emergency room has been closed four nights a week on a ‘temporary’ basis, for months. Your last minister of health was ignored when he tried to evoke action. Even after your cabinet shuffle with new eager ministers in place, still closed four nights a week. Odd, I.H.A. continues to say we are a top priority. Again, troubling because no results are forthcoming. Residents here are neglected. A shuffle does not in any way absolve you of the problems this province faces. I have asked you repeatedly to address this issue. Medicine is not politics, though,
ironically enough, if you were to do something to alleviate the suffering here you may possibly heal your own public image. The typical dodge is to redirect me to the newly minted minister of health. Not a problem as I have already informed Mz. MacDiarmid of our situation when she was the minister of labour. She chose to ignore queries into the legality of this crisis, her having the ability to issue an order of essential service and all. She is out of the frying pan and into the fire so to speak with regards to her new position. As health minister she can force her I.H.A. underlings to finish what should have been completed months ago. Now, fully informed, your offered opinion to new health minister MacDiarmid speaks (with authority) to the need for a fitting conclusion. Please fix this, or get Mz. MacDiarmid to do it. It’s why you put her there isn’t it, because you had faith in her abilities to take on the health portfolio? It would look good on you both to resolve it. Then you wouldn’t have to be reminded that the emergency room in Princeton is closed four nights a week. Sincerely Tired of Waiting D. Dobie *See Part III Equalization & Regional Disparities
Who’s at fault? Thank you Elbow Room
As I walked home on Thursday, September 13, 2012, @ 3:20 PM at the end of the Wooden Bridge at the North end. Two boys came riding down the wrong side of the road form the direction of the school, ran the stop sign. The leader almost got ran into by a car. They had to lock up to avoid an accident. It’s too bad the parents do not teach their children the rules of the road. I understand that cyclists have abide by the signs of the road, the same as the motorists. If the motorists hits a bike rider, when they do not abide by the signs, whose fault is it? The vehicle drivers are supposed to watch out for kids yes, but if they go through stop signs or ride all over
the road, I would like to know who’s fault it is if they get hit, killed or seriously injured? Here is another episode, people coming out of stores, and a kid on a bike hits a person, who is responsible? There are signs on the sidewalks No Bikes, but I see they cannot read. I also believe that bikes are supposed to ride with the flow of traffic. You see all the time that they go against the traffic. The parents with kids that have bikes should teach their kids the Do’s & Don’ts of riding a bicycle I am sure you would feel real bad if your boy or girl got killed or seriously injured. M. On Saturday, September 8 my family was in Princeton for a hockey Game. When we arrived in town we asked a local gentleman where we should eat lunch. He told us to go to the “Elbow Room”, and how we would have to go through the Laundromat to get into the restaurant. We thought this a little strange but we took his advice, and proceeded to enter and order lunch. I am happy to report that we had
the best lunch we can remember. The food was superb, the service was terrific and the whole place was spotlessly clean. If homemade cabbage rolls and perogies make your mouth water, you will love this establishment. Anyone reading this who is travelling through Princeton would be well advised to stop into this delightful little cafe. Tom & Jill Atkinson Chase, BC

and Salmon Arm joined Princeton residents for the afternoon. Interior Kootneys representative for BC Horseshoe Association, John Hamler heard about the tournament and decided to come to Princeton to assist if he could. And assist he did. Hamler happily became the tournament director for the event and proceeded to explain the rules of the game to those who didn’t know and encouraged everyone to have fun. “We are playing a 21 point game, said Hamler, if you loose you’re out and it’s miller time,â€? he added with a chuckle. The process of elimination throughout the game left brought Bernie Lepper and Doris Wilton of Winfield BC to a first place win and second place to Jaunita Laye & Lois Simpson of Summerland. Tse and Law are pleased with the event turn out and plan to start holding tournaments again as soon as its warm enough to play in the Spring. Visiting club members are hopeful that Princeton will soon have it’s own Horseshoe Club. SpotlightCOMMUNITY 5th annual ‘In the Pink’ tournament at Princeton Golf Contributed Muriel Pweterson
Once again sunshine welcomed the ladies in pink to the 5th annual “In the Pink” 9 hole fun tournament Saturday September 8. In keeping with the “fun day” theme of the tournament, prizes were awarded for entertaining, as well as skillful aspects of the game. The ladies got into the spirit of the day by dressing in their modest to most outlandish pink outfits, and this year there were a few cowgirls complete with pistols on the course. If you happened to see a covered wagon pulled by two horses on the course you weren’t seeing things. The stuffed horses and bridle came from the Horse Rescue people, and Elaine Harwood and her granddaughter Shandi decorated their golf cart like a covered wagon. Shandi took top prize for best
dressed pink lady in her western style dress. It was very close, but her pink cowgirl boots were the tie breaker. Eye catching bouquets of pink flowers adorned the banquet tables compliments of Sharon Blower. Thanks Lloyd for setting the course up for us, and the greens keepers for a few pink flags they got from somewhere for us. Many thanks to all those who donated prizes. Thanks to everyone who participated and to the others who joined us for lunch. Lastly, thanks to Kathy Orser, who introduced “Pink Days” years ago, and who inspires us by still golfing at age 90.
NOW UNTIL SEPTEMBER 23!
Join the celebration Enjoy big savings & events, plus thousands of bonus points!

Ratatouille NUMBER OF SERVINGS: 4 TO 6 When fall vegetables are ripened and tasteful, it’s time to prepare a ratatouille. This recipe in cooked in the microwave. Ingredients: • 30 ml (2 tbsp) oil • 1 onion, sliced • 1 eggplant • 2 zucchini • 1 green pepper • 1 red pepper • 120 g (4 oz) mushrooms, sliced • 1 clove garlic, crushed • 30 ml (2 tbsp) chopped • fresh basil • 5 ml (1 tsp) chopped parsley • 15 ml (1 tbsp) tomato paste
SEPTEMBER 2012 CAPRICORN: Capricorn, both work and family issues are on your mind, but you can only tackle one set of concerns at a time. Figure out which one is a priority and set your wheels in motion. AQUARIUS: Aquarius, you are likely to feel amazing this week, so much so that you actually do a double-take in the mirror to make sure it’s you looking back. Savor every moment. PISCES: Pisces, you may have some trouble figuring out what is real and what’s a facade this week. Others can provide backup if you need it. ARIES: Aries, your goals are easily achieved this week. All you really need to do is set your mind to them and everything will fall into place along the way. TAURUS: Taurus, you may feel rushed by outside pressures, but it really is up to you to set your own pace. Everything will get done if you just relax. GEMINI: Those closest to you need a little space and respect, Gemini. Just give them what they need and all will go smoothly. Wednesday could be a trying day. CANCER: Cancer, you may need to act quickly before things start moving in the wrong direction. You have to take control and make sure things are on the right course. LEO: Leo, you can have fun doing just about anything this week. You have lots of energy, so maybe something physical will fit the bill. Grab a crowd and go to it. VIRGO: Virgo, things have not been going your way, but that is no reason to be disappointed. You will soon find a way to bounce back and get back on track. LIBRA: Libra, this week you have the uncanny ability to impress people in one-onone conversation. Start by focusing all of your energy on one particular relationship. SCORPIO: Scorpio, it’s time to assess your health and make a few changes for the better. It’s within reason to change your diet and exercise more often. It will be to your advantage. SAGITTARIUS: Sagittarius, you will find you’re incredibly efficient this week, both at home and at work. If you have time left over, you may want to help a coworker or family member. • 1 bay leaf • 30 ml (2 tbsp) white wine • Salt and pepper Directions: Cut the eggplant in half, score the flesh lightly and sprinkle with salt. Leave on paper towels for 1/2 hour to draw out any bitterness. Heat the oil in a casserole for 30 seconds in the microwave, on high. Add the onion and garlic and cook 2 minutes
on high. Wash the eggplant and dry it well. Slice it thinly and slice the zucchini and peppers and add to the onions. Cook 5 minutes on high, loosely covered. Add the herbs, bay leaf, tomato paste, wine, salt and pepper and cook a further 5 minutes on high. Add the mushrooms and tomatoes and cook 2 minutes on high. Remove the bay leaf before serving. Raising funds in a big way PSS Junior Girls Rebels Basketball are fundraising for a trip that they hope will take place in December 2013. The trip is to compete in a tournament in Los Angeles. While there, they hope to take in a Lakers game as well as the sights! On Saturday, Sept. 8, team members did a bottle drive throughout the community, which netted them a $1000. Coach Larry Mackenzie, team members, Kennady Holland Krenn, Brooke Kassa, Brooke Botcher, Samantha Simons and team manager Tania Simons, organize and sort the items from their drive.

Meet the newest hockey team in town. Princeton’s Midgets opened exhibition with a 4-2 loss in a Tier 4 Rep game on Saturday to Sicamous The Princeton team earned respect after taking back control of the game for much of the last two periods. The squad opened the scoring early on with a goal by Kolton Smith only to surrender four first period goals. To a one the players responded in the second then third and were unlucky not to be rewarded with a victory, settling for a lone second

STEELE, THOMAS VERNON (VERNE) It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas Vernon (Verne) Steele who passed away peacefully in the Vernon Jubilee Hospital on September 7, 2012 with his loving family by his side. With grieving hearts we let him go to be with his Lord, finally free of pain. Verne will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife; Laura to whom he was married for 35 years, his sons; Tom (Sue) and Greg, his daughter; Teri, their mother; Jinty Steele, 5 grandchildren; Lauren, Kristie, Cody, and Carli who are all attending post secondary institutions and thirteen year old Caleb, his sister; Phyllis (Gerald) Raboch, his nephew; Alex (Joan) Daye, his neice; Verna (Brian) Gordey along with extended family members and friends. Verne was preceded in death by his parents; George and Hilda Steele and by his oldest sister, Kay Daye. Verne was born in the Prince George Hospital on September 19, 1939 and lived in Vanderhoof, B.C. until he was eight years old at which time the family moved to Kaslo, B.C., where they spent two years before moving to Enderby, B.C., where he graduated from A.L. Fortune High School. He took his post secondary education at S.A.I.T. in Calgary, Alberta and then moved to Princeton to work. Verne was a good athlete and enjoyed baseball, hockey and curling. He became a very good shot with a rifle and first hunted with his parents and then with his friends. Verne was a kind, loving man with a very sharp mind and had a great sense of humor. When Verne was twenty-eight and a half years old he received a spinal cord injury while playing hockey and spent the rest of his life as a quadriplegic. He had still remained an avid hockey fan. Before he was confined to a bed, Laura used to drive them on short vacations to the coast and to other places in the interior. They enjoyed each other and had a great relationship. They both always said, “we” did or “we” fixed this, “we” planted the garden today. “We cooked” which always meant that Verne watched a cooking show on TV and when Laura came home from work she would cook and he would tell her from memory, word for word how to make the dish that he had just watched being made. Cremation preceded a Celebration of Verne’s Life which will be held at Grace Bible Church (5661 Silver Star Road, Vernon, B.C.) on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at 1:30 P.M. with Pastor Larry Woelke officiating. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Chai, Dr. Yacyshyn and the wonderful ICU nursing staff for their care and love shown to Verne and his family. A special thank you to Dr. Lemiski for going above and beyond the call of duty for all of the house calls and support for so many years. It is very much appreciated. As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so may send donations in memory of Verne to the Vancouver Children’s Hospital 4480 Oak Street, Vancouver, B.C. V6H 3V4 or to the Upper Room Mission 3403 27th Avenue, Vernon, B.C. V1T 1S2. Arrangements entrusted to the care of BETHEL FUNERAL CHAPEL LTD., 5605 27th Street, Vernon, B.C. V1T 8Z5 (250) 542-1187
