The meat aisle at the grocery store: Not what you want to hear Have you ever walked down the meat section of the supermarket and noticed that most the cuts of meat are almost identical to each other? Have you ever wondered why every time you have a cheeseburger at a fast food chain restaurant it tastes just like the last one you had there? How is it possible that every chicken breast, hamburger and pork chop looks exactly alike?

Jack

WHEELER Big companies need enormous amounts of meat to supply to their customers, and by supplying such high demands they end up representing a large portion of the market. Each year, there are a small number of companies controlling more of the meat supply market. On top of that, they are controlling more of the meat packing industry. Since the 1970s the top meat packing companies have raised their share of the market from 25% to 80%. Fast food chains, which are typically the highest purchasers of meat, want all their products to look and taste the same for consistency. Super-

markets may look like it’s scattered with brands and options but the truth is most of these products are owned by the same company. These meat supply companies make contracts with farmers to raise their animals in certain ways, so the animal becomes as big as it can as fast as it can. They are looking to be as efficient as possible with the ‘production’ of their meat. It all begins with what the companies (not the farmers) decide to feed the animals with. Most animals are being fed refined corn to be fattened up and to gain the most amount of weight in the shortest amount of time. Why corn you might ask? Because it’s easy and cheap to produce. The problem with feeding cows, chickens, pigs and in some cases fish corn is that they do not naturally eat corn, which is a carbohydrate rich food that’s very starchy. This can lead to weight increases quite easily if eaten excessively. With these high calories, refined diets, animals gain so much weight that their bones are unable to keep up with the development of the rest of the body. An example of this is with chickens, they gain so much weight so fast that they are only able to take a few steps and have to immediately sit down or they’re bones will break and they will be unable to move or feed themselves. With chickens, there is such a de-

mand for breasts and thighs that they have almost been engineered to carry most their weight in these parts of the body. This increases the difficulty of breathing and stop chickens from developing normally. It’s not just the animal’s diet which is causing the gain in weight; it’s their living situations as well. Most of the chicken coups, pig pens and cattle pastures are overcrowded so much that the animals can barely move. Chickens are kept in coups that are dark, keeping the chickens subdued. Cattle and pigs are given little room to walk around; many times they have to step on each other. As most of you may know a high carbohydrate diet and little physical activity is the recipe to gain weight. This over populated habitat isn’t just adding weight to the animals; it’s a breeding ground for diseases. Such an overcrowding of the animals leads to unsanitary conditions since there are little opportunities to clean the pens/animals. With such an over population of the animals, the farmers are unable to continuously clean the pens of any feces or even in some cases other dead animals. Since they are unable to clean and there are such restrictive movements, some of the animals have resorted to eating the feces and carcasses of the other dead animals. These

A Trim, A Shave or Something New... Find Your Local

animals are highly subjective to death and diseases. Even if they don’t get contaminated from what they eat, the hygiene of the animals is very poor, which can also lead to contaminated meat. Even in meat packing factories they barely clean the carcasses of the animals which can be covered in feces and other toxic substances. Some companies go as far as spraying down their ground beef with ammonia to prevent the E. coli virus. These are just a few of the reasons why there have been more breakouts of E. coli, mad cow disease, salmonella and other food related diseases. While there are regulations and food inspectors, they don’t have enough power over food companies who have very powerful lobbyists protecting their interests. So can we change these practices? We can, with our wallets. When at supermarkets buy organic foods or grass/grain fed meats. Go to your local farmers market or butcher shop and support the farmers in your area that produce grass/grain fed animal produces. Look for free range animal products as well. Consumers have the power to change these practices every day. Jack Wheeler is a personal trainer and owner of 360 Fitness in Red Deer. Car auction and show charges into City BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express The fifth annual Red Deer Fall Finale Collector Car Auction rolls out at Westerner Park Sept. 21-22. The event, hosted by The Electric Garage of Red Deer, also features special guest ‘Big Schwag’ Brett Wagner from Speed Channel’s Pass Time. Wagner – actor, reality TV star, TV host, nationally syndicated radio host and producer, former pro wrestler and author -- has been in the entertainment business for over 20 years. He has guest starred in more than 60 different TV shows and films. In the mid 90’s Wagner got involved with pro wrestling and was running the WWE’S minor league company Ultimate Pro Wrestling in Orange County California. This weekend’s auction also includes a feature car -- a 1969 Cuda 426 hemi convertible and it’s definitely one that auction officials are excited about. “It’s a one-of-a-kind car. It’s a rotisserie restoration. Every nut and bolt is new in this car. It’s an award-winning car and it’s known in Canada as well as the United

States. It’s been in Mopar Magazine and it’s selling no-reserve, so the highest bid will take the car,” said Todd Schwindt, president/owner of The Electric Garage. “The car is valued at nearly $200,000.” There will be 100 cars up for auction on Saturday alone. Among those include a 1965 Mustang Fastback, a 1966 Mustang Fastback, a 1971 Camaro RS Z28 and 1969 Mustang Mach 1, along with many more. “We have the nicest line-up of unreserved cars that we have ever had,” said Schwindt. “And we have the nicest cars that any auction in western Canada has ever had, no question.” In addition to the car auction, there will be a no reserve auction of memorabilia from Piece from the Past. “He has signed prints from all the current Hollywood and music stars. The prints are worth $3,200 and $3,300 a piece. He sells everything no reserve because he travels from California and he doesn’t want to take anything back.” On Friday, the doors to the event open at 5 p.m. and the auction begins at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, the doors open at 9 a.m. with the auction to follow at 10:30 a.m. Admission

for is $10 per day or $15 for a weekend pass. Children aged 10 and under get in free. For more information, call 1-888-296-0528

The Wildlife Trust Fund provides natural habitat for hunting and fishing In 1983, the Alberta Fish and Game Association had the foresight to see that critical habitat was disappearing at a rapid rate in Alberta and set out to create the Wildlife Trust Fund, the province’s first land trust. Since those humble beginnings, the Fund has grown to include over 80 properties across the province, encompassing over 37,000 acres of important fish and wildlife habitat. The properties are found from the extreme southern reaches of the province all the way north to Manning. At the heart of the Wildlife Trust Fund are the members, clubs and zones of the Alberta Fish and Game Association who make these acquisitions possible through their generous contributions and tireless fund-raising efforts. There are currently 1.75 acres of habitat conserved in the province for every Alberta Fish and Game Association member and that number is growing rapidly, thanks to the members. Wildlife Trust Fund properties are open to all people for most forms of recreation, including hunting, fishing, wildlife viewing and family outings. In order to access all you have to do is go to the AFGA’s web site www.afga.org and click on the Wildlife Trust Fund link. Here you will find

a description of each property and the opportunities they afford. Please respect the foot-accessonly policy and any special access restrictions as outlined and also neighbouring landholders’ property. While every effort was made to ensure complete descriptions of the properties, please consult county and municipal landowner maps to ensure the location of the Wildlife Trust Fund property and ensure you have permission prior to entering adjacent private property. Also note that some properties do require permission prior to accessing and others do have additional restrictions you should be aware of prior to entering. Each property description and map is available as a down-loadable pdf file. The Alberta Fish and Game Association’s Volunteer Stewardship Program is a great way to become involved with the Wildlife Trust Fund. We rely heavily on volunteers to monitor and report on these properties so they can be managed effectively. For more information on this program, please visit www.afga.org or call the Alberta Fish and Game Association head office at 780-437-2342 and ask for one of the habitat staff.

50 Shades of Grrrr: Why men hate Christian Grey There’s been a steady parade of disgruntled men marching through my office lately, all hating on Christian Grey, the sexy but screwed up leading man in the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy. “I’m not him,” they complain. “He’s filthy rich and powerful.

DEBRA

MACLEOD He has a perfect body and he’s great in bed. He’s exciting. How can my wife expect me to compete with a total fantasy man?” This widespread resentment toward Christian Grey – kink version of the Alpha

male – has created a furor among men. Some men admit to feeling inadequate when held against Mr. Grey’s looks, physique, money, sex appeal and lip-biting talents. Other men get downright mean. Instead of wondering what is drawing women to this series, they insult its female readership – their middleage, appearance, weight, intelligence and so on – to the point of misogyny. Visit any online message board on 50 Shades and you’ll see what I mean. But men are missing the point. It isn’t Mr. Grey’s bank account or bondage gear that makes him Mr. Right. The real reason women lust after him is because he makes them feel lusted after. In the books, he desires Ana – the female lead – to a degree that not enough women in the real world have ever enjoyed. When she walks in the room,

he is mesmerized by her. Other women fade away. To him, she is the loveliest, sexiest, most bewitching women he has ever seen and he will do absolutely anything to make her happy. So when a man comes in my office and laments the 50 Shades series is total fantasy, I agree. I also give him a dose of reality from his wife’s perspective. In the real world, everything from billboards to beer commercials tells her that she’s too old, too fat, too ugly, too unsexy. The 50 Shades series offers a much-needed respite. It also turns the tables because, while women are accustomed to being compared to thinner, prettier, “barely legal” fantasy women, men are less accustomed to the experience of being so blatantly compared to younger, hotter, richer fantasy men like Magic Mike and Christian Grey. Of course, it’s as cruel for a wife to compare her blue-collar, middle-aged, overweight husband to Christian Grey as it is for a husband to compare his forty-something, chubby, exhausted wife to Kate Upton. Most couples aren’t this deliberately awful to each other. The entertainment and advertising worlds are that awful, though. In fact, they thrive on such awfulness. Which begs the question: How do you, as a husband, make your wife feel like the most beautiful woman in the world? The hoopla around the 50 Shades series presents an op-

portunity for loving couples to think about how they are shielding each other from the ’you’re not good enough’ message that both sexes now hear, loud and clear. Christian Grey, for all his whips and dirty talk, does that for many women. Instead of hating him, try learning from him. You don’t need a private jet, six-pack abs or handcuffs to steal his thunder. All you need is a desire to make your woman feel desired. Do put her on a pedestal. Prioritize her pleasure in bed by learning a few new skills. Look your best for her. Buy new cologne. Put on a tie and take her to dinner. Act like you’re lucky to be with her, and sweep her off her feet. Do not text your female co-worker for a thrill, let your eyes follow the waitress’s butt or linger on the swimsuit competition as you channel surf. Sneak your peeks when she isn’t sitting beside you, worrying that you’re comparing her to the bikini-clad fantasy woman running across the screen. If you can do this, you might be surprised to find her copy of 50 Shades of Grey lying in ashes in the fireplace. After all, who needs a fantasy man when you’ve got the real thing? Love the one you’re with: Cars and women As a kid growing up in small towns around Red Deer, I often wondered why the affluent local doctors always seemed to be driving 10-year-old, but well-kept Volvos instead of something brand new. Why did my parent’s rich friends bother to rebuild the engines of not one, but two old diesel VW Rabbits with fatigued odometers? Why did my wealthy relatives drive their Subaru’s into the ground before passing them on to their kids? The answer? Because they were smart. Because they didn’t live in a disposable world that made them think they needed an ‘ego upgrade’ in the form of a shiny new vehicle every couple of years. If your grandfather was like mine, he held onto something forever and took care of it. If his car broke down, he fixed it or had it fixed. He kept it on the road, kept enjoying it, and kept most of his money in his pocket. My hope is that more drivers learn to be grateful for what they have, to customize their ride and to make

Don

MACLEOD it exciting and unique for years to come. Banks, car makers, advertisers and insurance companies all profit from the ‘new car syndrome’. It’s in their best interest to persuade you into changing vehicles every few years. You need to keep up with the boys at work, right? There’s no way you’ll make it up the next hill without that extra 15-horsepower of the new musthave model. Instead of buying into it, do the math. In many cases, a new car payment won’t justify the fuel savings. If you have a truck, keep it, fix it, modify it. If you have a car, buy a utility trailer for those times you need to move a couch. On your deathbed, you’re unlikely to say, “I sure wish I’d had a

new vehicle every year.” It’s more likely you’ll remember the family road trips in a faithful, favourite car, the time spent at the cabin you can suddenly now afford, the fun with boats, ATV’s or other toys you bought instead, or maybe just the extra money you can now leave to family because you didn’t waste it on ‘ego upgrading’ to the next model. Love the one you’re with. Customize it as only you can. Chip it for performance. Add the twinturbo. Re-upholster it in leopard print, install a killer stereo. Tint the windows and vinyl-wrap it with a huge picture of your Golden Retriever, C-3PO or whatever puts a smile on your face. Install 20’ whip antennae’s and a musical air-horn. Repaint it in blue metallic sparkle paint just like the Corvette you saw in 1981. That’ll set you back four or five new truck payments instead of 60. Your ride is about you, so don’t worry about keeping it perfect for the next guy. Most people I’ve met have fond memories of a favourite vehicle

and regret selling. And since cars and women often go together in the male mind, I suppose the same message goes for marriage. Sounds the same doesn’t it? If your truck won’t start one morning, do you immediately assume you got a lemon and look at trading it in for a different model? Or are you the type to try everything to make it work so that you can enjoy it for a very,

very long time? Ask divorced people in private, and many will tell you that the exact same problems they experienced in their first marriage came up in their second. They just gave up too easily. After all, everything worth having – and keeping – takes a little work. Don Macleod is a local automotive enthusiast. He welcomes car chat at drmacleod@hotmail.com.
