‘The centre of their world’ Christ Church cherishes its lengthy roots in Cloverdale By Jennifer Lang A service, community barbecue, games for kids and a Sunday school launch are just some of the ways Surrey’s oldest church will be marking its 130th anniversary this weekend. A fraternal order shrouded in mystery and a genuine historic artefact will also be involved. The original silver trowel used in 1884 to lay the cornerstone of Christ Church is being donated to the church – a gift from the Union Solomon Masonic Lodge, the New Westminsterbased lodge of Freemasons who were there at the beginning to put the stone in place, and whose members are still a part of yearly anniversary services held inside the historic church. Rev. Craig Vance, who took over the parish in 2005, was initially puzzled by the Masonic connection, until he was reassured by a senior cleric. Christ Church was dedicated with full Masonic rites, a reflection of the community that helped build it. “So we just kind of embraced it as a historical oddity,” Vance told The Re-
porter during a recent tour. “At the time [it was built], you’re English, you go to the Anglican Church and you’re a Mason.” A time capsule was buried beneath the cornerstone, marked by a small plaque on the southeast corner of the church, says Vance, cradling a copy of Faith Among the Evergreens, a History of Surrey Centre. “There’s some reference to some copies of newspapers and some personal goods that they put in it,” he says. Christ Church, at 16613 Old Old McLellan Road, is a heritage landmark valued for its Arts-and-Craftmeets-Gothic-Revival style. The church founders might be hard pressed to recognize the churchyard in 2012. Today, mature, second-growth Douglas Firs soar overhead, enveloping the pitched-roofed church, its slim bell tower and cozy pioneer cemetery in shade. The gleaming white exterior paint – freshened just this summer after a See WORK OF LOVE / Page 8

(The squadron celebrates its 50th anniversary next year.) This Saturday, the squadron hosts an open house. The public can meet cadets, officers and parents, and new recruits can sign up on the spot. The squadron, open to Fraser Valley youth aged 12 to 18, is a training program focused on aviation (both power and gliding), and other activities, including First Aid, team sports, music, effective speaking, military drill, parades, summer camps and international trips. “We call it the world’s best-kept secret, because not enough people know about cadets,” says Montano. Her goal is to help spread the word about the program.

“Air cadets is one of the best youth programs that there is,” says Flight Cpl. Issac Kubis, 14, who was one of six cadets from Canada who joined their American counterparts in helping marshal planes at an air show in Arlington, WA, this summer. Flight line marshaling, he says, is like “parking” planes. “It was really fun,” says Kubis, a Grade 9 student at D.W. Poppy. Kubis also took part in a fourday survival course in rugged Juan de Fuca Sound. Participants were dropped off with scant food rations. Due to the fire risk, they weren’t even allowed to light camp fires. “They just dropped us off and said, ‘Here, survive,’” smiles Kubis, who’s hoping to get his pilot license and wants to one day become a jet fighter or airplane mechanic. “You get so many opportunities – it’s hard to explain to your friends,” says Fight Cpl. Ethan Tessier, a student at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary who followed an older cousin into cadets. He’s excited at the prospect of taking glider and power plane courses and other activities open to 746 Squadron members. Sgt. Michael Montano, 14, went on a scholarship course this summer to North Bay, Ontario, where he took an advanced aviation technology course in airport

operations – in other words, airport management – and rising each morning at 5 a.m. “It was pretty hectic, but it was a lot of fun.” He also went to NORAD – the headquarters of North American Aerospace Defence Command immortalized in the 1983 movie WarGames, complete with banks of computers and giant video monitors. “It was just like that!” he grins. Ever since Montano was a little kid, he’s been interested in aviation. “I grew up at an airport – I was fascinated. It’s always been my dream to be a pilot.” He joined air cadets when he realized it could help him become a commercial pilot. He says one of the central tenets of cadets learning leadership skills.
It turns out notable former air cadets include two astronauts (Chris Hadfield and Jeremy Hansen), ex-Newfoundland premier Brian Tobin, B.C. MLA Mike de Jong, current B.C. Lt.-Gov. Stephen L. Point, and former prime minister Joe Clark. Leaders all. Along with poppy sales on behalf of the Royal Canadian Legion in November, the squadron takes part in the annual Remembrance Day parade and service in Cloverdale, standing guard, statue-like, at the Surrey Cenotaph. “That was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done. You can’t move. I had this rifle on my foot,” recalls Sgt. Montano. “I have to stand there. You can’t move. It gives you a lot of time to think about stuff.” What if you get an itchy nose? “Suck it up,” he shrugs.

A little sympathy Tri-City residents might balk at Port Mann tolls, but fairer road pricing benefits everyone It’s not quite BOGO and there are no Air Miles attached but there are plenty of other incentives for signing up with the province’s new Port Mann Bridge toll program. There’s a great deal of sense in trying to get people to get one of those stickers that can automatically deduct payment and so far the province seems to think the reduction is affordable, at least for one (election) year. But the deal is a bit of a sham and it won’t silence critics because it doesn’t address an underlying unfairness, which is that the Port Mann is part of a regional — even provincial — transportation network we all use and from which we all benefit. Thus, everyone in Metro Vancouver should pay. Whether that means slapping token tolls of $1 per trip on every bridge, tunnel and thoroughfare, or adding a $20 flat fee to property taxes, it hardly matters.
Points of view
KIM SEALE / NEWS 1130
Three of 10 lanes on the new Port Mann Bridge opened to drivers Tuesday.
The principle is everyone should share in the cost of an efficient transportation system. The current system of only charging people who use the new Port Mann — placing a disproportionate burden on people
The Cloverdale
who live south of the Fraser River — is unfair given the fact that many people who won’t use the bridge will still get to drive on the new freeway. Tri-City residents might balk at the suggestion that they should
pay a toll or higher taxes to help pay for the new Port Mann but fairer road pricing would benefit everyone, especially if the fee generates more cash for other transportation improvements. We are getting the Evergreen Line, a regional rapid transit system that will largely benefit Port Moody and Coquitlam residents, yet everyone will be paying through provincial, federal or regional taxes and fares. While we don’t sympathize with south-of-Fraser folks who would refuse tolls and yet benefit from cheaper housing, we do argue for a fairer road pricing system for all of Metro Vancouver.

Calm over casino Assurances that Cloverdale’s Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino will continue to be the biggest game in town continue to placate Cloverdale business leaders who once voiced concern about a proposed South Surrey casino. The BC Lottery Corporation’s vice-president of casino and community gaming, Jim Lightbody, was guest speaker at Cloverdale and District Chamber of Commerce’s luncheon last Tuesday. And the reaction he received was very positive, said chamber president Brian Young, noting Lightbody’s remarks confirmed BCLC’s has commitment to bring in live sport betting at Fraser Downs. “They’ve committed to it, they’re doing it, and, as long as that happens, we’re very happy,” he said. Such a commitment means that the proposed South Surrey casino, part of a 200-suite hotel and convention centre planned for 10
Avenue and 168 Street, will not offer significant competition to Fraser Downs, Young said. “We are not averse to the expansion of that business,” he said. “We’re only averse to anything that operates to the detriment of Fraser Downs. We like new business – 10 businesses thriving are better than one.” Young said that although Lightbody did not share a timeline for introducing live betting at Fraser Downs, the feeling is it will be soon. “They’re working on it, it’s coming, and it will be there fairly quickly,” Young added.

By Jennifer Lang How much do you know about GMOs, or genetically modified organisms, and the food you eat? Not enough, according to Bobbie Blair, a local parent who’s bringing a documentary about the food industry to the Clova Cinema in hopes of building more awareness. Blair has become increasingly alarmed about the growing presence of genetically modified foods in our grocery aisles. But since the Canadian government doesn’t require these foods to be labeled, consumers are not able to choose to buy them – or not, she says. That’s why she’s organized a screening of The Future of Food, a film by Deborah Koons Garcia. She urges everyone to watch this 90 minute film, a 2004 documentary that explores genetically modified or genetically engineered (G.E.) foods and how they relate to biotech companies and the food industry. “You’re getting educated and empowering yourself to make informed choices as a consumer,” Blair said. Any proceeds will be donated ‘Densely informative’ to the Society For A G.E. Free B.C., a coalition of groups working to raise awareness and lobby on the issue. Blair, a member, said foods containing GMOs are labeled in other countries, but not here in Canada or the U.S., although the state of California is preparing to vote on whether food containing GMOs sold in the state will be labeled by law. Richmond city council recently agreed to ban genetically modified crops, plans and shrubs, with the exception of three dairy farms already growing genetically modified corn. Powell River, Kaslo, Nelson, New Denver and Rossland have also made similar resolutions, according to the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network. Fruit growers in B.C.’s Okanagan are also hoping to stop a local company from growing a genetically modified non-browning apple, Blair added. Popcorn, she pointed out, isn’t genetically modified yet, so she reminds patrons to bring a container from home for movie popcorn and beverages. “By going there you’re supporting a locallyowned, family-run theatre at the same time,” she added. According to IMDB.com, The Future of Food offers an in-depth investigation into the disturbing truth behind the unlabeled, patented, genetically engineered foods that have quietly filled grocery store shelves for the past decade. Reviewer Tasha Robinson (The A.V. Club) described the film as densely informative, and says it steers clear of hyperbole and histrionics.

Shed Row Market makes a move By Jennifer Lang One of Langley’s horse-friendliest addresses hosts the 4th annual Shed Row Market later this month. The boutique-style fall market – named for a row of horse stalls facing a walkway – runs Sept. 29 to 30 at High Point Equestrian Centre and Clubhouse in South Langley. There’ll be a focus on vendors selling local and handmade goods and produce, from organic vegetables to artisanal cheeses, handmade jewellry, art, pottery, paintings, home decorating items and more. The $2 admission fee goes directly to New Stride Thoroughbred Adoption Society. The market got its start in 2009 at Barb Beaton’s Fields & Flowers Farm in Langley. Beaton wanted a way to honour her thoroughbred stallion, Musing, a former racehorse and successful sire in his retirement. She also wanted to raise money and awareness for the New Stride organization. After three years at her farm, the harvest-themed market has grown to the point where they needed a larger venue. “We simply couldn’t accommodate the number of visitors or the request for vendor stalls on our working farm,” Beaton said, adding High Point Equestrian Centre, at 658 200 Street, is the perfect venue. “The community has made this event a huge success and contributed greatly to our program year after year,” New Stride president Marcy Emery said. The year 2012 marks New Stride’s 10th anniversary. Already, 12 horses have been adopted this year – a record for the society. Horses live an average of 25 years, but most thoroughbred racers retire from the track before they’re eight years old. New Stride Thoroughbred Adoption Society gives retired race horses just off the track a new lease on life, retraining them so they can be adopted into good, loving homes. Donations from the community are vital, as are sponsorships. For as little as $10 a month, people can sponsor horses that are being rehabilitated through New Stride, covering their feed costs and upkeep, which can add up. The Shed Row Market runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. For more info, visit http://theshedrowmarket.com and http://newstride.com.

What Should i get Checked on my vehicle for fall & winter driving?
Heating and cooling system Check your radiator, hoses and drive belts for cracks and leaks. Make sure the radiator cap, water pump and thermostat work properly. Use an anti-freeze with the appropriate strength and grade for the temperature and weather conditions in your area. Make sure the heater and defroster work well. When stuck in traffic conserve battery energy by turning off the electric rear defrosting systems and/or heated mirrors or windshields.

Windshield wipers Take the extra minute to clear windows and mirrors from frost “before” driving. Make sure your wipers are in good condition and replace blades that streak. Purchase wipers designed to withstand frost and ice on windshields. Top up your windshield washer reservoir with wintergrade washer fluid and carry an extra jug of washer fluid in your vehicle.
