Grass fire razes Erickson home

BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

TODAY'S WEATHER

What started as a homeowner burning grass in an Erickson Road yard led to a house burning to the ground on Sept. 13. “Sadly, this fire could have been avoided,” said Creston Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Michael Moore. “A grass fire near the adjacent shed

appears to have been the cause. There is a provincial burning ban in place prohibiting all open burning except campfires less than a half meter in size within a contained fire pit. We have had no where enough rain or moisture to lower the hazard.” The residential structure fire was reported to the fire department at approximately 2:20 p.m. See HOME, page 3

and Creston will be participating to help raise awareness. This year’s project includes an interactive art/education display to promote and support breastfeeding in the community. A mobile poster display offering the health, environmental and social benefits of breastfeeding will travel through the community to various partner sites. In addition to the display, an art station will be provided to visually promote breastfeeding. The art station will contain fabric flags and markers; participants may decorate their flag in any manner they choose in support of breastfeeding (suggestions include children’s names, designs, positive messages, anything inspiring). The flags will be collected and strung together, then displayed at various venues in town. The flags will artistically and physically represent the support and community connections in promoting breastfeeding. This is an invitation to all community members, not just breastfeeding mothers.

Council hosts environmental delegations at meeting BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Creston town council rolled up its collective sleeve and got back to work on Sept. 11 after a slow summer that required very little in the way of decisionmaking. With the summer holiday season coming to an end, the entire council was in attendance, as were all senior managers. Lou Varela, town manager, in Kelowna on town business, participated by telephone, a first for a Creston council meeting. The Sept. 11 regular meeting opened with presentations from two delegations, Jennifer Vogel of the Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee (CKIPC) and David Hillary of the East Kootenay Conservation Program (EKCP). Vogel reported that CKIPC is a group of concerned local citizens, land managers and nongovernment agencies “who share a common concern about the increase of non-native plants in the Central Kootenays and B.C. Identifying invasive plant species, which can degrade wildlife habitat, choke out native plants and reduce biodiversity and crop quality and yield, is key to attacking the problem, she said. Vogel said invasive species in the Central Kootenay region include policeman’s helmet, invasive knotweeds, hoary cress, blueweed, plumeless thistle, yellow flag iris, yellow/orange hawkweed and Scotch broom. Such plants are often introduced in gardens as decorative features. Prevention is the most costeffective approach to managing the problem, she said, recommending that local governments adapt practices that include regular mowing of any areas with invasive plants, cleaning mowing equipment to prevent transportation of seeds and plant parts, mowing before seeds are produced and reseeding bare soil as soon as possible. Education and awareness is key, she added. Hillary described EKCP as an organization that envisions “landscapes in the Kootenays

that sustain naturally functioning ecosystems that can in turn support economic and social well being. ‌ “We envision vibrant communities that demonstrate the principal of environmental stewardship for future generations.â€? EKCP brings together funders — Columbia Basin Trust, Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program, Environment Canada, Nature Conservancy and Regional District of East Kootenay — with more than 50 other partners to promote conservation of mostly private lands. It has helped to conserve more than 300,000 hectares of high value lands since it was established by referendum in 2008, brought in more than $100,000,000 in conservation investment and established the first local conservation fund in Canadian history. EKCP has recently expanded its mandate in the East Kootenay to include the Creston Valley. “Working together, we can maintain and restore the rich biological, economic and social heritage of the Kootenays,â€? Hillary told council.

Council Briefs •A public hearing regarding a development variance permit for properties at 1403, 1407 and 1409 Hillside St. was held, with no objections being heard from the public or town officials. The process to create a panhandle access will now proceed. •Creston Fire Rescue Chief Bruce Mabin reported that an application for funding under the Strategic Wildfire Prevention Initiative has been made. The program is designed to help fund wildfire protection projects. •Council members were presented with a public health plan discussion guide and overview document that outlines the provincial government’s public health system strategies. •The final report by Water Smart ambassador Clair Schadeli was presented. In her position, funded by the Town of Creston and the Regional District of Central Kootenay, Schadeli 2.8125 x 3

worked to increase public awareness about conserving water and to assess opportunities to conserve the resource. Council directed Mayor Ron Toyota to send a letter of gratitude to Schadeli for her work in the summer position. •In an effort to reduce paper use at Creston Town Hall, council recently moved to the use of iPads, which eliminate the need for paper agendas and information packages. A policy for the use of the digital equipment was presented. •Mabin presented the second-quarter report for the fire department. While the fire department has 28 members, the average experience level is dropping due to the retirement of experienced members and hiring of new ones, he said. Creston Fire Rescue responded to 46 calls from April through June, 16 of which were motor vehicle incidents. Five structural fires resulted in a loss of $318,000, but Mabin estimates the value of property saved to be more than $1.6 million. •Council voted to fund an evaluation of the Creston fire hall, in which a number of detriments have been noted, including mould, a shortage of shower facilities, a potentially dangerous air circulation system and a roof that doesn’t meet current snow load standards. Up to $10,000 will be spent to fund a complete assessment of the structure and get recommendations about how to ensure its viability in the future. •The town will apply for provincial funds to help with the installment of an electric vehicle charging station at the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce. The cost to the town for such a project would be about $1,000. •A request from G.F. Oliver Funeral Chapel Ltd. to place a family columbarium in Forest Lawn Cemetery is being held until a report about all local cemeteries and their operation is received by the end of October. •A noise control bylaw amendment to allow registered snow removal operators to clear snow during the night when necessary was passed.

From page 1 Upon arrival, the fire department was met with a house that was significantly involved with fire, an adjacent shed fully involved in fire, as well as a vehicle parked next to the house. “Due to the size of the fire, the only safe approach was a defensive mode, keeping firefighters outside of the structure, Moore said. “With confirmation that no one was in the house, there was no reason to risk the safety of firefighters to save what was already significantly lost. Sixteen firefighters from Creston, with water supply support from both Canyon-Lister and Wynndel-Lakeview fire departments, spent over three hours to extinguish the blaze. Canyon-Lister fire department also provided some additional firefighters to assist in bringing the fire under control. Creston Fire Rescue responded to two other calls last week,

including a false alarm and an open fire that was contrary to a provincial fire ban. On Saturday evening, firefighters were called out to deal with an open burning complaint in Erickson where a property owner had a large fire. “The fire had to be extinguished due to the burning ban in place and it was not meeting anywhere close to the requirements of a campfire, Moore said. The provincial burning ban has been in place since July 13, with an update expected to be provided by the province yesterday. “The update doesn’t necessarily mean that the ban will be removed, Moore said. “It would not surprise me if it is extended, although with cooler weather in the evening and the dampness, it is possible. Property owners need to check the provincial website to determine if a ban is in place or you may receive a fine.

Suspects plead guilty to breaking and entering BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Two suspects in the recent rash of thefts and break and entries pleaded guilty to six charges on Monday. They left court after receiving $650 fines. Corey Cooper, 23, and Nathan Townsley, 22, both of Woodstock, Ont., arrived in Creston to pick fruit earlier this summer and “fell in love with the Creston Valley”, RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Tuesday. “Unfortunately, they chose theft as a way to make money

to stay here,” he said. One of the culprits was identified when an RCMP recognized his face from a surveillance camera photo. He had ridden to the police detachment on a stolen bike. He was arrested and his accomplice was later located at a campsite, where police found some marijuana and a large array of stolen property. The pair has left Creston, returning to Ontario with a parent, who came when notified about the crimes the young men had committed. “They had never been in trouble before,” Gollan said,

adding that police are now busy trying to trace the owners of the stolen property that was recovered.

Police Beat Gollan said Creston RCMP responded to 85 calls from Sept. 10-16. September 10 •Police are investigating a historical sexual assault case involving an Erickson Road resident. •Minor damage resulted from a collision on Canyon Street. •Four tires were slashed on two vehicles on Ainsworth

Third winery now open BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Five years after planting an orchard above Duck Lake, Wynnwood Cellars Estate Winery has finally opened its doors to the public. “We are getting a very positive response,” said winery partner Dave Basaraba. “We wanted to start with a soft opening so that we don’t create too much momentum — we don’t have a huge supply of wine just yet.” Basaraba and Michael Wigen partnered in the project after discovering they each had a long interest in making wine in the Creston Valley. Basaraba was growing grapes on a test site in Canyon when he learned that the Wigen family owned property on Duck Lake, an area he had identified as a potential vineyard site. “That land has limestone in it, just like some of the great French vineyards,” Basaraba said. Ten acres are now producing a variety of vinifera grapes, including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. The slope to the north of Duck Lake is proving to be very good for ripening grapes, with the late afternoon sun reflecting off the lake surface and helping ripen grapes that don’t grow well in other areas of the Creston Valley. The Wynnwood winery and shop is located at 5566 Highway 3A, north of Wynndel, on Basaraba’s home site. Watch for the roadside signs. “I’m amazed at how much traffic we get,” Basaraba said. “We have been steadily busy since we opened

Since the latter part of 2010, many patients and their physicians have encountered a shortage of medications. Reports of shortages continue to surface in media such as the Globe and Mail, CBC and the Edmonton Journal. Recently, Dr. Brian Goldman dedicated an entire broadcast of his CBC program White Coat, Black Art to the drug shortages. It appears that the problem is global in scope with shortages reported in the U.S. and the U.K. The types of medications affected includes: chemotherapy drugs, antibiotics, anesthetics and pain killers. The drug shortage was exacerbated earlier this year when Sandoz Canada cut production at its plant in Boucherville, Quebec in order to address quality control issues. A subsequent fire at the same plant resulted in further decreases to supply. Sandoz Canada has a near monopoly on the production of injectable drugs with 80% of the market. This in turn caused the postponement of some types of elective surgery.

Recently, The Canadian Medical Association Journal and The Canadian Pharmacist’s Journal jointly published an editorial calling for a national plan to manage the prescription medication supply and to deal with ongoing supply issues. The editors are asking that Ottawa make it mandatory for pharmaceutical companies to notify the government about impending drug shortages instead of relying on voluntarily reporting anticipated shortages as is now the case. After President Obama instituted mandatory advance reporting of manufacturing disruptions that might lead to shortages, the number of medications in short supply in the United States was reduced by 50 per cent. It is also possible to offer drug companies incentives to manufacture medications which are in short supply. Health Canada could also speed up the approval process to allow Canada to import medications from international suppliers more quickly should a shortage occur. Ultimately, the government cannot compel pharmaceutical companies to manufacture medication which are considered unprofitable or less profitable than other medications and therein is the problem. Until the right balance of incentives, planning and profitability can be found, it looks as though medication supply interruptions are going to be something that Canadians will have to adapt to.

A model of decency

My first memory of an Alberta provincial election goes back to 1967, when an upstart Progressive Conservative leader began to make waves in the news. It was no easy feat — the Social Credit party had been ruling since 1936 and the Liberal party had typically formed what I recall to be a pretty weak opposition. It was a Saturday morning and my family was returning from our regular visit to the public library when we passed a man who was, literally, running from door to door, passing out campaign brochures and chatting with anyone who answered a doorbell. I recognized Len Werry’s face from the news. As election day neared, our math teacher, Jake Heibert (I was attending Bowness Composite High School), brought up the election subject — our class was comprised of top students from schools around Northwest Calgary and we were expected to take an interest in these things. I volunteered an opinion that Werry would win our constituency and Heibert scoffed. The incumbent Socred, Charles Johnston, had previously been a member of Parliament. Werry’s door-to-door campaign paid off and he won, becoming one of six Progressive Conservatives to form the official Opposition. The following day, Heibert tossed a dime across the classroom to pay off the bet we had made. I caught it and placed into a spot I had ready. I had cut a photo of Werry out of a campaign poster, looped a string around the candidate’s neck and made a little

pocket to hold my winning coin, so that it looked like he was wearing a pendant. That little victory shrine remained near my desk for the rest of the school year. In ensu-

Peter Lougheed, of course, usually attended those meetings and I was in awe of this very likeable, extremely strong and articulate man. And I remember his admonitions that our party was campaigning on what it would do as a government — even mentioning the words Social Credit was discouraged. On election night, I took the bus to the home of Pat Donnelly, our campaign’s office manager (who would later serve two terms on Calgary’s city counLorne Eckersley cil), to watch the election results with other campaigning years, that same teacher would ers. Calendar a great view of Kootenays

To the Editor: I was in Imagine Ink and brought Leone Lund’s calendar for 2012-2013. It is the best colour photograph calendar of areas around Kootenay Lake that I have ever seen. Words cannot describe the unbelievably stunning and beautiful colour photographs. They are spectacular. Pat Doyle Creston

ing his conservatism in a personal, and not political sense. And yes, Attila the Hen, true to the conservative doctrine, did manage to destroy all of the above for her British subjects, but in the spirit of “thinking positively”, I suppose we should all wish her a happy birthday. And if we really care about her in her declining years, we should also be thankful that she can afford private health insurance. Larry A. Ewashen Creston

Canadian birth law Letter raises needs review questions for reader

To the Editor: (Re: “Election will be historic”, Sept. 13 Advance, page 7) Mr. Clement’s letter left me somewhat puzzled. He says, at one point, conjecturing on the future, “We may have a woman as prime minister — preferably Conservative.” Has he forgotten Kim Campbell or did she not have enough of those qualities he listed to count? He then goes on to say, “In regard to my own philosophy, I am conservative, but also progressive, believing in equality between men and women, protecting health care, education, the environment, working with unions in a positive way (non-union employees are also important), helping those who are less fortunate and building a better world for future generations.” Since the conservative government of B.C. and the conservative government of Canada have been most active in destroying all of the above items, I can only presume that he is proclaim-

To the Editor: It is shocking to learn that Canada’s law states that we are not human until after we have completely exited our mother’s body. This means that children in the womb do not have any human rights up until the point of complete birth. Our outdated law puts our nation in the same category as China, Vietnam and North Korea as far as implementing human rights for children in the womb. This is not right. Picture this: A child is completely out of the womb except for one toe. At that point, that child is still considered subhuman, with no right of protection. MP Stephen Woodworth tabled motion 312 at the beginning of the year and if it passes, it will commission a parliamentary committee to take a second look at Canada’s 400-year-old law that defines when a baby becomes human. Our MPs will have to decide if updated modern medical science proves that a child in the womb is in fact human before the moment of complete birth. If you would like to see motion 312 passed so that a committee could study this law, please contact member of Parliament David Wilks and encourage him to vote yes. Lynn Reeb Wynndel

Lougheed a gentleman and model statesman

To the Editor: That the recent death of Peter Lougheed evoked widespread sadness did not surprise me in the least. Neither did the volume of tributes to his achievements as premier of Alberta and following his retirement. As associate editor and editorial page editor of the Calgary Albertan from 1960-1980, I got to know Lougheed quite well. Ours was a Liberal newspaper, but not slavishly so. We commended the Conservative government when it did something we felt was good for Albertans. We disapproved when we judged that the government was misguided, but in a polite and reasoned way rather than with vicious contempt. NOW In the latter case, however, I would RECYCLING invariably get a phone call from Lougheed — but notLEAD at all couched in ACID wanted to anger. The premier simply ensure that we understood his governVEHICLE ment’s reasons for taking the action at BATTERIES issue. These conversations were always amicable. Through them and through occasional face-to-face meetings we developed what I believe was a friendly and mutually respectful relationship. Certainly I greatly respected him and I agree with everything said about him when he died. Peter Lougheed was among the three political leaders who were active during my journalistic career for whom I hold that level of respect and admiration (the others: Tommy Douglas and Lester Pearson). More importantly, Lougheed was a fine gentleman, a model politician and, indeed, a statesman. Canada — and the world — sorely need more of his ilk. Peter Hepher Creston

What’s happening to communication?

“What we have here is a failure to communicate,” are the memorable last words of escaped convict Cool Hand Luke in the classic movie of the same name starring Paul Newman. Luke, a war hero, had won the respect of his fellow inmates with his courageous rebellion against the brutal injustice of the prison regime. His tragedy was his lack of opportunity to develop his own fine qualities and express his frustration with authority figures in a socially acceptable way. Perhaps this unhappy situation could have been improved by his having more opportunities to nurture a more rounded personality with meaningful, interactive conversations. Unfortunately, in our real 21st century world, technology could lead to the deterioration of the face-to-face conversation. How many families choose to watch TV rather than sit at the dinner table and converse? How many times have we been annoyed when a person gives preference to his cellphone or iPod rather than present company? Will the popularity of tweeting, Facebooking and texting cause a disconnect from reality? Is the convenience of online shopping and banking preferable to the advantages of a local outlet? So often this sort of contact is one-way, with the

result that the use of expressions of common courtesy of gratitude, appreciation, regret and pleasure may be dying.

The Voice of

Experience Phil Thomas

Obviously, conversation skills are an important factor in forming and maintaining relationships. For example, getting to know one’s prospective life partner by talking in more depth might lead to a marriage more likely to be successful and help reduce horrendous divorce numbers. Later, as parents, this welladjusted pair might be more likely to balance compliments with firm directions and pass on their skills to their offspring. Is the decline of conversational skills inevitable? Perhaps the older generation could be a model for the youngsters, as in their earlier years there were fewer alternatives to communication. Yes,

that’s you, seniors, and especially grandparents! Perhaps schools could help. Practicing conversational skills for 10 minutes a day could be useful and fun. According to a Sept. 10 Macleans article, “New research shows that it’s not academics that guarantees success in school, it’s social skills and resilience.” It’s well-known that youngsters’ favourite time at school is recess or lunchtime. What might be needed is a refinement of their forms of social interaction with some fun use of some conversation role playing, with firm guidelines as to what they talk about and how they converse. One guideline might be, “Take a genuine interest in your partner by balancing questions with statements and spending as much time listening as speaking.” Turning to the post secondary scene, the same Macleans edition features what they call “Crisis on Campus”, stating, “A shocking number of students feel depressed even suicidal.” Perhaps closer social contacts may relieve this unhappiness, preparing them not only for their own success and contentment but as the ones soon to govern our country. For those of you that needed a warm water fix, we are back in business as our annual shutdown of the aquatic centre was amazingly smooth. The shutdown is a necessary part of

replacements and the extraction of some hairy objects from a couple drains. Top it all off with a total top-down scrubbing, pressure wash and disinfection, as well as a cleaning and inspection of all mechanical systems, and we feel pretty good about the shape of our community pool. Not by accident, this can be attributed to quality design, workmanship and materials, as well as a pretty regimented cleaning and inspection philosophy throughout the year. From the administrative angle, as part of the process, all parties keep notes of what went well and what didn’t, and a debriefing meeting will be held in a couple weeks to better streamline the process. This is our first “real” scheduled shutdown at the proper time of year and while it is unlikely the two-week process could be shortened because of the limitations of drain, clean, refill and heating times, there are always ways to improve sequencing and operations. Now we move forward with our rejuvenated pools and fall programming — and maybe I can work out some of those aches and pains again. Neil Ostafichuk is the recreation supervisor at the Creston and District Community Complex.

Communication

From page 7 With the right support and adjustments, they could share these vital responsibilities successfully with the happier Cool Hand Lukes of this world. Incidentally, Prince Charles Secondary School is focusing on two themes for the 201213 academic year. First is the aforementioned resilience — the ability to solve problems and learn from trial and error with flexibility and imagination. The second focus is citizenship. One aspect of citizenship is volunteering. Refer to the same Macleans editorial entitled, “Even if Mandatory, Volunteering is Good for Kids.” If you see an opportunity for one or more high school students to volunteer in an appropriate task not interfering with paid employment opportunities, please contact the school at 250428-2274 or spopoff@sd8.bc.ca. The school will appreciate your suggestions and the community will certainly benefit. Phil Thomas is a longtime Creston resident and volunteer.

A significant part of operating a sustainable, valuable program is having a vision and a plan of action that will accomplish that vision. Last year, the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors supported our members to continue to be productive members of their community. TAPS members helped the Creston Valley Gleaners Society by taking charge of preparing the dolls Terry Nowak for sale, and ripping pounds and pounds of clothing only suitable to be sold as rags. Another project we were part of was planting, weeding and pot washing at the College of the Rockies greenhouse. Visiting seniors at Swan Valley Lodge and Crest View Village was started in the spring and was welcomed by all involved. These projects have proven to be valuable and are now part of our regular activities. Our objective for the next year is living well. Good physical health is being promoted though a fitness program lead by Richelle, a kinesiologist from Creston Physioworks and More. Richelle has designed a program for seniors focusing on balance and agility. This class is offered Monday afternoons and seniors from the community are welcome to attend. Other workshops will be held on topics such as stress management, avoiding fraud and abuse, improving memory, wills and power of attorney, and self-esteem. These workshops will be presented by members of the community who have expertise in these areas. Social, emotional, mental and physical well-being will be supported by these workshops. If you would like to attend any of these presentations or would like more information, please call TAPS at 250-428-5585. Each month we take this opportunity to thank all those who support the TAPS seniors in a special way and this month our thank you is to Ann Day and Tanna Patterson. These ladies host the weekly book club at TAPS. Every Tuesday morning, a group of ladies meets to discuss the books they are reading, current events, history, politics and whatever else is on their minds. These discussions are always lively with lots of laughter coming from their table. One of the TAPS members described her enjoyment of the group to me. She said that the book club was “the fastest hour in my whole week.” Thank you Ann, and Tanna. A new TAPS brochure is now available and we have distributed it around town. Check at your clinic, the library, the community complex and many other places to get a brochure and find out all that is happening at TAPS. We always welcome visitors. Terry Nowak is an outreach worker with Creston’s Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors.

Crawford Bay Market celebrating grand opening BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

The Crawford Bay Store started a new chapter in June when it expanded and reopened as the Crawford Bay Market, and the public is invited to celebrate its grand opening. A trade fair, dunk tank, bouncy castle, food and door prizes will be part of the event that runs on Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. At 6,000 square feet, the market is more than three times bigger than the original, a converted home that stands next door and has been owned by John Stocker and his sons, Darren, Greg and Wade, since 1983. “It was a tremendous amount of business planning and forecasting, said general manager Jamie Cox. The idea came about a year after the Marysville native became manager in 2008, wanting a quieter lifestyle than he had had in the ski industry. “It got very corporate in the ski world, he said. “This was a place to step back. He soon found that the old store was too cramped to fully serve the community, as well as difficult to work in — when

General manager Jamie Cox in front of the new Crawford Bay Market.

a truck would arrive with, for example, liquor, 16,000 pounds would be delivered through a residential door down to storage in the basement, and then carried upstairs as needed. The problem is solved now, as the new location has proper loading doors and a walk-in cooler.

Brian Lawrence

In addition, the store has 13 doors of freezer space, room for fresh meat (which is cut daily) and a deli, which will soon expand to offer breakfast sandwiches and rotisserie chickens. And that’s not the end of Cox’s plans. One of his goals is to develop a delivery

Bud required $1.4M investment

From page 1 To produce Budweiser, an investment of $1.4 million will be made to expand brewing capacity and accommodate Bud’s unique brewing process. The expansion will be completed over the next six months and the new brew should be found in the market in the spring of 2013. The addition of Budweiser to the brewery’s portfolio will result in 90,000 additional hectolitres of production each year for Creston. “Bringing Budweiser to Creston is a significant milestone for the Creston brewery, said Jeff Ryan, Labatt’s senior director of corporate affairs. “Labatt’s $1.4 million investment shows our commitment to the Creston community and ensures we can meet growing consumer demand for Budweiser. The addition of Budweiser further diversifies our brewing capabilities and will help maintain and grow Creston’s operational capacity as Labatt’s westernmost brewery. Prior to brewing Budweiser for consumer consumption, the brewery will undergo a rigorous certification process to ensure Creston meets the high quality standards that Budweiser is known for. The certification is complete only when Creston’s brew meets Budweiser’s beloved quality and taste profile. The addition of Budweiser to the Columbia Brewery marks a major achievement for the brewery — Budweiser is the first global brand that will be brewed at the facility. In addition to Budweiser, five brands have been added to Creston’s production capabilities since 2009, including Bud Light, Alexander Keith’s, Alexander Keith’s Red Amber Ale, Busch and Brava. Budweiser has been brewed in Canada by Labatt for more than 30 years, and will now be brewed at all six of Labatt’s breweries in Creston, London, Edmonton, Montreal, Halifax and St. John’s. Millions of bottles of Budweiser are brewed at local breweries every year using local personnel, raw materials and 165 years of brewing experience. Budweiser — the “King of Beers and the No. 1 beer in Canada — has been brewed since 1876. Brewed in Canada for more than 30 years, Budweiser uses only the finest ingredients without any artificial additives or preservatives. Columbia Brewery began brewing Kokanee lager in 1960 and became part of the Labatt family in 1974. With 140 employees, the brewery brews more than 16 different beer brands including Kokanee, Budweiser, Bud Light and Alexander Keith’s. “This is welcome news from one of our most important industries, said Creston Mayor Ron Toyota. “Columbia Brewery is one of our valley’s

largest and best employers and the investments made in recent years are the result of a dedicated management team and staff who run a very efficient operation. “Columbia Brewery is an important taxpayer in Creston and it part-

system to take groceries to East Shore seniors, and another would see the old store become an Internet cafĂŠ and bakery to supply the market, and also house a Laundromat and post office. The expansion of the store, which opened less than a week before the end of June, was a welcome surprise for tourists. “They say they’re not going to stock up in Cranbrook or Creston anymore,â€? Cox said. He’s proud of the store’s staff of 10, which has risen to the challenge of working in a store that has actual departments and aisles — and the community’s response has been exactly what he was hoping for. “This community is just overwhelmed by it,â€? Cox said. “Anytime I speak to the community about it, I say this is their market. They just wrapped their arms around that.â€?

Pastel artist brings ordinary objects to life in brilliant colour

Who: Carol Schloss What: Lifelike, vibrant pastel pictures Where: Her West Creston home and in her travels When: Whenever she isn’t occupied with gardening Why: Artists never retire

BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff At first glance, the colour pastel works of Carol Schloss are easily mistaken for photographs. Further inspection reveals them to be the creations of a highly accomplished artist, one of only 600 signature members of the Pastel Society of America worldwide. Like so many artists, Schloss’s time is torn between art and many other inter-

ests. Our visit begins with a tour around the West Creston acreage that she and her husband, Pete, purchased five years ago. On the property, the couple who spent most of their life together in Philadelphia grow fruit and vegetables for their own use, and others for medicinal use. A patch of elderberries has

been started, part of their commitment to the West Kootenay Herb Producers Co-operative. A half-dozen chickens are kept for egg laying and an old barn was, until recently, home to goats, whose milk Carol used to make cheese. A tiny creek winds through the property, providing fresh water for the house

and irrigation, and adding that special ambience that only running water can provide. It’s a bucolic life for people who have largely been city folk. But it obviously suits them well. She was artistic as a child, and was often accused by her young schoolmates of tracing her drawings. “I was always interested in art,” she recalls. “I don’t think there was ever any doubt in my mind that art is what I wanted to do in my life.” Her parents were always supportive. Her dad, a banker, had been a sign painter when he returned home after the Second World War. “Dad always supported my interest in art. I remember him getting me a commission to do an artist’s rendering of a bank building. He never put up any roadblocks.” She is a believer that practice makes perfect, referring to the concept that 10,000 hours are required to become expert in any skill. “I’m sure I’ve got that,” she laughs. For all the effort she’s given to her passion, she admits that talent plays a large role in success. “It’s a talent I feel an obligation to,” she says. “And if you are given a talent you have an obligation to give back. I feel a responsibility to my art and a drive to be creative. It’s there with most artists, I think.” See PASTEL, page 13

for horses began at a very young age and has been the primary focus of my I would do soley equine work when I graduated, so in school I chose to do all of the M ylife.passion I thought I saved up and bought my first horse at age eleven and still have him today along with equine electives and filled my practical year with mostly equine rotations. I stayed longer another gelding, a broodmare, and another leased mare that I am hoping to get my next prospects out of this coming year. I rode just about every discipline of riding growing up but dressage and jumping are my favorites. School came pretty easy for me as a child so I decided to become a vet around the age of ten with the thought of combining my academic ability with my love of horses. I was in Pony Club and 4-H for many years and got a good basic knowledge of horse care through those clubs.

G

etting the acceptance letter from veterinary school after several years of college and univeristy in order to complete all of the prerequisites was one of the best days of my life. I understood how competitive it was and becoming a vet was absolutely the only career I was interested in so it was pretty stressful wondering if I would ever get in, and therefore a huge relief when it finally happened!

Dr. Emma Davis and friends

in Saskatoon the summer before my final year doing a six-week equine rotation that included medicine, surgery, and field service in order to get more cases during the busier time of year. This enabled me to get much more experience with reproductive work, foal medicine, general medicine, surgery, field work, and a lot more training with equine dental work.

I graduated from the Western College W hen of Veterinary Medicine in 2011 I started work

with an equine vet in the West Kootenays and did strictly equine work for the first few months. Come late summer, the equine work slowed down and it was time to look for small animal or mixed work. That is when I approached Dr. McLeod and was very lucky to get on at the Creston Veterinary Clinic where we see all animal species. I really like Creston and I love the clinic and the staff so I hope I will be working here for a very long time.

Pastel artist

From page 12 Art, she says, influences how she sees and acts. “I have always arranged my clothes on the clothesline according to colour,” she admits. “And presentation is very important on the dinner plate when I cook — I want it to look nice, too.” Schloss graduated from a three-year commercial art class at a technical high school with top honours, then enrolled in a five-year bach-

her deft hand, the subjects become fascinating, drawing the viewer into a world just slightly more beautiful than it might otherwise be. With her educational and professional background, she also enjoys teaching. She has taught classes in pastels, drawing, sketchbook and field trips, and basic design in Wyoming and South Dakota, and in Creston and Riondel. Her artist’s statement gives some insight into the way this very accomplished artist approaches her work: “Creating art, it seems to me, is a transformative process. Draw an ordinary object and it

break a few rules, scrape a few knees. “The animating force of my work is colour. Drawing provides the bones and framework of an image, and even the energy, but a flicker, a movement, a sense of life, it seems, is breathed in with colour. To enhance colour, I play with values and complements, area and line, layering and underpainting, to approximate reality in an impressionistic way, a shorthand for letting your eye and distance fill in the details. Firm drawing skills and a fine sensibility for colours are the foundation of my work. Pastels, being a coloured drawing media, combine beautifully to this end. I am thankful that after a decade with this media and a lifetime of working with designers’/artist’s eyes, I have the skills and confi-

dence to forge ahead to keep creating beautiful things. It’s pure magic.” “I have a good time with things when I paint, but it is work,” Schloss says. “I put in a good day — maybe not eight hours, but five or six, for sure.” Her basement studio is filled with northern light, finished pictures and supplies. But for the most part she works upstairs in a corner of the living room. A digital photo frame is clipped on to her easel, so she can use one of her photographs as a reference. It’s a sign of an artist who moves with times, using digital images where she once used photographs, taking advantage of the immediacy of the digital world. “Artists never retire,” she says. “That’s how you keep healthy.”

elor of arts degree program in graphic design at the Cleveland Institute of Art, minoring in photography. She went on to work as a graphic designer and art director for studios in Philadelphia, honing her skills, layout and design. Thanks to her well-grounded training in fine arts, she added other skills to her repertoire — illustration, typography, calligraphy, photography and perspective renderings were all used in her professional life. When Carol and Pete moved to Cody, Wyo. — “just on the other side of Yellowstone, near the Tetons” — she produced catalogues for a local company. Then she took a pastel class that inspired her to shift her emphasis back to the fine arts after decades in the commercial side. Continuing toher be... She has rarely put pastels back in the box since. How did the couple make the move from life in Pennsylvania and Wyoming to Canada? Pete, who owned computer businesses, was tiring of American politics. They camped a lot on their travels and fell in love with British Columbia. Five years ago they made the move northward. “We are now proudly Canadian citizens — dual citizens, actually,” she smiles. Her enthusiasm for pastels centres around their bright, vibrant colours, but also their forgiveness. “If you don’t like something you can just brush it off and start again.” Because pastels, like chalk, are by nature dusty, they can be a bit tricky to frame. Her preference is to mat her pictures in a way that any dust that drops from the surface collects behind the mat, so that it doesn’t show. And the pictures need to be glass covered to protect the delicate surface. Schloss’s favourite subjects tend to be ordinary — everyday subjects like clothes hanging on a line, cowboys and horses at an auction, ranch scenes, landscapes and portraits. Under

somehow becomes extraordinary. Paint a mundane scene with a song in your heart, and it becomes a beautiful thing. This wonderful alchemy allows an artist to create a totally new and unique image from the ordinary stuff of life. A recipe that requires a lot of tending and hard work filtered through eyes, hands, heart and brain, will transform a feeling, a glimpse, an experience, into something of substance. This is pure magic, a constant source of inspiration, and what keeps me coming back. “I approach my work with optimism and a sense of purpose; to learn, to grow, to challenge myself. I will push limits, try new techniques,

Living in the Kootenay version of Shangri-la obviously means for some, “We don’t get older, we get better! The champions of Creston Golf Club in 2012 were both seniors and both won for the first time. “It’s about time! yelled the crowd, as multiple tourney winner Don Price stepped up for the coveted men’s club trophy. Price, a longtime open tournament chair and juniors coach, was delighted with his first time men’s championship win. He probably felt a lot like this with his first win well over a half a century ago His two steady rounds of 75 triumphed over Wes Deitz who, with an even par 72 on the final day, needed a birdie to tie for the lead. Even with a bogie on hole 18, Deitz’s total of 152 was good enough to take the senior trophy. Other notable rounds were first-round totals of 74 for Dean McCready, Cecil Chernoff with 75 and Curtis Huscroft with 76. Ken Karlander was presented with the low net prize. The ladies’ championship also featured a first-time winner. Joyce Johnson, two-time senior ladies’ champion, with her steady play fended off challenges from three other ladies “of a certain age, Donna Bussi, Leslie Harbisson and Cherie Baker. Johnson, with her steady play, had the low round of the tournament on the first day. The final round was very close, one shot separating the top three. Bussi won an exciting playoff for the senior championship from Baker. Marilyn Kettle was presented with the Doreen Carruthers trophy for the higher handicapped ladies. For the first time, the junior club joined the men’s and ladies for their championship. What they lacked in numbers, they made up in talent and colourful attire. After the first day, Clayton Fenwick led with a fine score of 75, followed closely by Reegan Czar with a 76 and Nathan McTeer with a 77. On the second day, Fenwick needed a birdie to tie Czar on the final hole but fell prey to the deep bunker on the final hole. Both Fenwick and Czar are off to college now. We wish these two fine young gentlemen all the best in their academic and sporting endeavours.

The Creston Valley Thunder Cats got the 20122013 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League season off to a good start when they won their home opener on Friday, beating the Kimberley Dynamiters 6-1. โ As a team, I thought we played really well,โ said head coach Josh Hepditch. โ The guys really came together. We had a few good showings from some players pointswise.โ Thunder Cats Ryan Murray, Lucas Kwasny, Brady Ward and Trevor Hanna each scored in the first period, with a Creston native assisting on the first two. โ Colby Livingstone had some nice assists in the first period, two beautiful passes to guys that finished it off,โ said Hepditch. โ It was nice for him, being a local kid, to see that.โ The second period started with a Dynamiters goal, followed by Thunder Cats goals by Ethan Rusnack and Hanna, the latter of which also saw Livingstone assist. The third period was scoreless, despite Kimberleyโ s 24 shots on Creston goalie Michael Hails, who blocked 51 shots in the game. See LOSS, page 18

The Boom Booms are a six-piece Latin-soulfunk-rock-reggae band, forged from friendships born on the schoolyards, soccer fields, cafĂŠ patios and, eventually, bars of East Vancouver. They make music that makes people want to dance, or “get up and love somebody,â€? as lead singer and guitarist Aaron Ross calls it, and will be performing on Sept. 23 at the Snoring Sasquatch. The talented lineup is Ross on vocals and Latinfriendly nylon guitar, Geordie Hart on stand-up, sit-down and strap-on bass, Sean Ross on vocals, ukulele/cavacino, Tom Van Deursen on black, sexy electric guitar, Theo Vincent on ragin’ percussion and drum kit, and Richard Brinkman on drums that he keeps deep in his pocket. Whether breaking into song and dance on the streets of Paris, storming stages with Congolese musicians in Brussels, playing to thousands at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival or serenading abuelitas in South America, the charming sextet is able to reach across cultural barriers and connect with people of all stripes, on levels equally rhythmic and emotional. The video for their 2007 feel-good party anthem “When the Nightâ€? made it to No. 6 on the Much More Music countdown in 2008, and was optioned for an episode of 90210. “Deliveredâ€?, a surreal banjo ballad that conjures up images of a jungle river baptism, earned them the award for best roots song at the Just Plain Folks Music Awards, which are judged by the world’s largest independent music organization. In 2011, The Boom Booms released their debut album, Hot Rum. This album, along with their strong live performance and incredible stage presence, earned the sextet a spot in the 2011 Peak Performance Project, BC’s most prestigious contest for emerging musicians. They went on to win second place and picked up a cash prize of $75,000. Since then, the Boom Booms have wrapped up a successful tour of Brazil, which included sold out performances in both Rio de Janeiro and Manaus, playing for one thousand people in the heart of the Amazon. While on tour, the band fell in love with the Brazilian culture, music and people. They created a series of videos to raise awareness for the Belo Monte Dam in the Amazon rainforest, which is destroying and displacing a huge number of locals and causing an ecological disaster. “Aaron’s music combines the raw emotional intensity of Ben Harper and the cultural diversity of Manu Chao, with a sound that harkens back to old time folk and soul,â€? said CBC Radio 3. “The Golden Voice of the [Edinburgh] Festival. ‌ Aaron pours his heart and soul into each and every song. ‌ Definitely a talent to watch for in the future,â€? said Festival FM. The group’s influences include the Buena Vista Social Club, Gregory Isaacs, the Budos Band, Manu Chao, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Damian Marley, Otis Redding, Sam Cook, Marvin Gaye, Ray LaMontagne, Tabu ley Rochereau and Paul Simon. The doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8. Tickets are $18 in advance at Kingfisher Used Books and Black Bear Books, or $20 at the door.

Alliance for literacy offers programs around region COLUMBIA BASIN ALLIANCE FOR LITERACY

Early literacy development begins the moment a child is born. Every touch, word and image helps to build the skills needed for children to become lifelong learners. Every child deserves the opportunity to succeed in whatever endeavours they choose and it is every parent’s wish to have their child grow to become a confident and resilient adult. The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) recognizes that parents are the first and most important teachers in a child’s life and demonstrates that commitment by investing resources into community programming across the Columbia Basin. CBAL reaches across the region, delivering and supporting programs that focus on providing parents and caregivers with the tools and knowledge needed to support their children’s physical, cognitive and social and emotional development. In Valemount, Play and Learn is offered to families with preschool children. Participants discover ways to support emerging literacy skills through songs, stories, rhymes, sign language, crafts and everyday teaching opportunities, while children engage in facilitated,

creative play. The connection a parent has with a child is unmistakable, and programs such as Play and Learn build on that connection to enhance the development of early literacy skills.

By the time a child starts kindergarten, they may know the alphabet, be familiar with the letters in their own names and even have begun to recognize simple words. These skills are key milestones and family lit-

their children develop and acquire new knowledge and skills. CBAL offers a number of family literacy programs designed to support this specific age group. In Revelstoke, and other communities across the Columbia Basin, Parents as Literacy Supporters (PALS) has been offered in partnership with school districts. “PALS gives families a chance to connect with their Kindergarten teacher, and provides information, ideas, strategies and activities that can be used at home,” said Tracy Spannier, community literacy co-ordinator in Revelstoke. “PALS is a wonderful opportunity to bring together parents, teachers and community as partners to support young children's learning.” Take time to attend a family literacy program in your community. Visit your local library, family centre or visit www.cbal.org to learn more about family literacy programs in your community. On Oct. 11 support literacy in Creston by taking part in Black Press and CBAL’s Reach a Reader campaign. Buy your local newspaper from a volunteer who will be out on the town and all proceeds raised will go to support literacy programs in your community. By learning together we will grow strong together.

Reach A Reader

Thursday, October 11

The Creston Valley Advance and the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy are partnering on a great new event for Creston and area. On Thursday, October 10, some of Creston’s highest profile people will be out on the street with our newspaper asking for donations to help support literacy initiatives in our community. Along with your donation, we will give you a copy of your community newspaper for FREE (plus there might be a few extra promos to go along with that). Absolutely all funds raised from the day will go towards CBAL and all funds will stay in the community in which they are raised to support literacy programs in our community. Thomas James Dickson 1926 ~ 2012

It is with deep sorrow that the family of Thomas James Dickson announces his passing on Thursday, September 6, 2012 at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook at 86 years of age. Before retirement Tom worked as a trapper, a logger and a construction carpenter. After retirement Tom spent many hours quadding, picking huckleberries, skidooing, wood crafts and building log furniture and he shared his knowledge of these with the younger generation. Thomas was born on May 19, 1926 in Kimberley, British Columbia. He is survived by his loving wife Rita Dickson; sons Morris (Jill) Brown and Barry (Christine) Brown; grandchildren Courtney (Jamie Adam), Amanda and Daniel Brown and Blair Hollingsworth; great grandchildren Carter Adam and Spencer Brooks. He was predeceased by his father James Bristol Dickson, mother Wilhelmina "Ma" Dickson, sister Laura Edwards and grandchild Kerry Brooks. Special thanks to Dr. Chesney, Dr. McIvor and the nurses at East Kootenay Regional Hospital, members of the Yahk Fire Department and staff at the Dr. F. W. Green Memorial Home for their special care of Tom. A very special thanks to Leland and Loopy Pratt and Cam and Betty for being there for us. Also thanks to George and Judy Dickson and family and Leighton and Lynda Dickson for your help. A Memorial Service for Tom will be held at the Yahk Kingsgate Community Centre on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at 2:00 pm. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in honour of Tom may do so to the Yahk Kingsgate Recreation Society Cemetery Restoration Fund, PO Box 13, Yahk, British Columbia, V0B 2P0.

Gavin Iain Dickie Gavin Iain Dickie passed away peacefully on September 8, 2012 in the Creston Valley at the age of 64 years. Gavin never married, he had family and friends who cared about him. He came with his mother and father to Canada from England in 1953. They settled in Saskatoon, returning to England in 1966 where Gavin remained for a number of years before joining his parents who moved to Nanaimo. Creston was their new home in 1964 but Gavin spent a few years in Riverview Hospital on the coast before moving to Cranbrook where he lived for 19 years. Creston has been his home since 2004. Diagnosed with schizophrenia at a young age, Gavin’s life by any standard had its ups and downs and challenges. He was a survivor however and made life work for himself, remaining as independent as possible. He took life as it presented itself. Many people enjoyed him. He was generous, intelligent, honest, had a memory for just about everything he’d learned or experienced, he loved to discuss issues and philosophy. He knew his own mind and was honest in what he could and could not handle. He has longtime friends, especially Dave Uchida who will miss him and Gavin remembered everyone he met. Since moving to Creston he was known from Chatka Restaurant to Tim Hortons, to Renee’s Diner and the Hebrew CafĂŠ, riding or pushing his bike, walking or accepting offered rides. Church visitors were welcomed by him, and he was grateful for the kindnesses of the Lutheran Church ladies and the folks at New Life Church. He offered his house for people in need, he gave money and cigarettes to others, he loved coffee, music, walking, biking, newspapers and drives in the car. For those in the downtown area he was a familiar sight at almost any time of the night or day, sitting, walking, smoking or drinking coffee. For his caregivers, he was alternately frustrating, funny, surprising, kind, compassionate, fascinating and a friend. His cousin Mary says of him, ' His indomitable spirit overcame his signiďƒžcant difďƒžculties, he triumphed over great adversity with gentleness, strength, courage and much kindness and care for others' Gavin is predeceased by his mother, Irene Dickie and his father Ian Dickie. He is survived by his cousins in England, Mary Flather and her siblings Vicky and Stephen and cousins Helen and Ruth. A Celebration of Life Gathering will take place at A Break In Time CaffĂŠ 1417 Canyon St., Creston on Saturday September 22, 2012, 2:00 - 6:00 pm. Memorial Contributions may be made on behalf of Gavin Dickie to: Creston and District Community Resource Centre Society Building Fund Box 187 Creston BC V0B 1G0 250-428-5547 Charitable Receipts can be issued.

78 is a GREAT age! Many thanks to a group of generous ladies who provided a delicious luncheon and many interesting, entertaining, ďƒ&#x;oral and tasty gifts. The humour was provided by T.J. with her tale about a dentist.

Saving energy starts here

Encouraging conservation It might seem unusual for a company to encourage customers to use less of its product. But FortisBC is doing just that by offering rebates on energy efficient upgrades and providing education on simple ways for you to save on your energy bill.

Why? Because conserving energy eases demand on infrastructure, which helps keep rates lower and reduces the impact on the environment. And that benefits everyone.

How? Throughout the fall, this series will highlight rebates and offers and provide tips for saving energy and money. It’s all part of our plan to help you reduce your energy bills and help B.C. meet its climate action goals. Learn more at fortisbc.com/starthere.
