he North Vancouver Museum and Archives is embarking on a two-year overhaul that will dramatically change how the North Shore’s history is told in the future. The who, what, when and where are changing too. Why? In July, when North Vancouver city council gave the museum its preliminary endorsement “in principle” to move into the former shipyard’s repurposed pipe shop at the foot of Lonsdale, all that stood between the museum and its new waterfront home was a plan. Or, rather, two plans. So last week the museum made two public call-outs to the planning community — one for a business plan to pay for the new museum, the other an exhibit plan overview detailing what should go inside. “We don’t want to be a kind of typical, small community historic museum with a lot of pioneer artifacts,” said museum director Nancy Kirkpatrick. Instead, she’s looking for a interactive, engaging and “forward-looking” museum, a standalone tourist attraction that can draw people to the waterfront from both sides of Burrard Inlet when it opens in 2015. So who are these exhibit planners and accountants? It sounds niche but apparently the local talent pool is one of the deepest. “There’s a whole bunch of them in Vancouver and in Victoria, but mostly Vancouver,” Kirkpatrick said. We can thank Expo 86 for that. It was then that the international Themed Attraction Association was formed across the inlet, an organization whose members have since been involved in most major cultural events like the
Olympics ever since. Both the business plan bid and the exhibit overview bid are open to any and all cultural attraction and accounting firms; big or small, local or foreign. That was the point in splitting them up, Kirkpatrick said; to open the bidding up to perhaps those smaller independent planners who maybe do the attraction planning side but not the accounting side, or vice versa. And while the bids close at the end of September, with the winners likely awarded early in the new year, the museum has already begun a major overhaul of its collection to prepare the move from its Presentation House location. Museum staff, volunteers and two contract technicians are in the midst of paring down the museum’s permanent collection from about 20,000 artifacts to 12,000, deaccessioning and disposing of 8,000 pieces over the next two and a half years. It’s a complicated task, according to collection manager Magdalena Moore. The museum can’t just open its doors for a garage sale. “Everything we have is owned by the municipalities [of North Van city and district],” Moore said. “It’s public property so council has to approve everything.” Before that can happen, every artifact has to be catalogued, cleaned, photographed and its value assessed against the rest of the collection. “But,” Kirkpatrick added, “it’s likely we’ll be holding auctions at some point.” Starting in January, visits to the Presentation House museum will be by appointment only as staff are diverted to help with the deaccessioning at the museum’s off-site warehouse. If given final approval, the museum’s move to the waterfront is expected to cost an estimated $9 million, including a museum rebranding campaign. As part of its business plan, the museum may explore taking on a title sponsor and charging admittance fees in an effort to move away from its reliance on municipal funding. twitter.com/toddcoyne

nitely unacceptable to them. Had I been an unbiased observer, it could have been amusing to be told how the Second Narrows (with a bridge) is an obstacle which keeps the people living on either side of the water forever separated and different. Yet a much larger body of water between Comox and Powell River was presented as a unifying common denominator there. The last presenter from Gibsons put into words what others may have deliberately avoided saying: she does not like being represented by a Conservative MP! She felt deprived of her rights as a voter and, I suppose, expected the commissioners to fix that problem as well. Although I have no reason to believe her concerns will receive more attention than is due, it highlights once again how difficult it must be to be fair to all. Ziggy Eckardt Burnaby
Editor, My wife and I attended the first hearing of the Commission for Redistribution of the BC Federal Electoral Districts on Sept. 10 in North Vancouver. We were most impressed with the respect the commissioners afforded all presenters. Presenters are equally to be commended for their passion and sincerity. It soon became clear how difficult it must be to consider all presentations and be fair to all. This was particularly clear when similarities of culture, lifestyle, economics and education were pointed out with regards to each side of the proposed boundary on the Sunshine Coast. One might understand why the two components wish to be treated as one. FIRE HALL MAKEOVER - After being housed in a double-wide trailer for more than a year, firefighters at No. 3 Fire Hall are happy to be back inside their completely renovated station on Montroyal Boulevard. “[It’s] always nice to move into a new home,” said assistant fire chief James Bonneville (pictured above), who gave a tour of the hall on Monday. The station, originally built in 1964, has underdone a complete makeover and now has a new 2,000-squarefoot second storey that includes crew living quarters, a spacious fitness room that can double as a training area and showers. The new hall also boasts a larger lecture area and expanded kitchen and dining area that has a specially designed off button that shuts down everything in the kitchen so firefighters can quickly leave when the alarm sounds without worrying about leaving a pot boiling. Along with undergoing seismic upgrades, the hall now has several green features, including solar electrical panels and geothermal heating. The $1.8-million project also included the removal of asbestos and other hazardous materials from the old structure that had suffered water damage in the past. The new hall was built using Fire Smart guidelines such as noncombustible building materials and other techniques such as cutting back vegetation to mitigate any potential wildfire danger. “I think the firefighters are quite happy,” said district architect and facilities coordinator Michael Wei as he walked through the facility on Monday. “It’s far better than the trailer,” joked Capt. Thomas Munro, who is impressed by the new building’s green features and added space. Justin Beddall photo

ast week, I had the honour of returning from Europe aboard the same flight as our Canadian Paralympians fresh from their London 2012 experience. Without giving too much away, Dodds says her story is about having and raising a child in a same-sex relationship and how even the best intentions can sometimes backfire. “Basically people kept telling me that I was going to have a boy, going to have a boy,” the longtime North Van resident says. “And even after she was born, somebody in the room said, ‘It’s a boy!’ And it wasn’t until a couple minutes later that it was actually realized she was a girl. So I just sort of talk about society’s need to set certain gender and sex stereotypes. “But,” she stresses, “I’ll do it in kind of a humorous way, not a lecturing way.” Like Radomske, Dodds says too often culture is assumed to mean what’s been formed in our past — our race, ethnicity or religion — while what goes on around us every day is ignored. “So [my idea is] to take it a little bit in a different direction and look at a question of queer identity as a form of culture,” she says. For many, the TED Talk-style speakers’ series events are a breath of fresh air from the daily disconnect of digital culture and computer screens. And the popularity of Rain City Chronicles and local PechaKucha events suggests people still crave the personal connection of oral storytelling. “If the event is successful, I’d like to do more,” Schiller says. “I’d like to do sort of a Rain City Chronicles type of thing here and have the theme be different every time and have different speakers every time. I’ve heard from a lot of people that say, ‘Oh, what a great idea,’ and they go and start their own storytelling event at their local church or organization.” It comes with the territory that Mayor Mussatto has done his share of public speaking, but never anything quite like this, he says. So as a lifelong North Vancouverite, he’s keen to talk about the culture and heritage of the place that, he says, made him who he is today. “I’m not the melting-pot kind of guy,” he tells The

Outlook, preferring instead, he says, that North Shore newcomers celebrate their cultural heritage rather than hide it. He tells the story of one of his earliest jobs as a teenager working at the Queensbury Market, a corner grocer at Queensbury Avenue and 7th Street, a couple blocks from where he grew up. “The owners of the store were Chinese — had lived in China when they were younger, moved here and brought the Chinese culture with them,” he recalls. “They taught me the value of not judging people by their skin or their colour or their ethnicity, but by their actions.” Mussatto credits the experience with not only giving him a “ big break in life” financially but also with teach-
ing him about hard work, honesty and his first exposure to a foreign culture. “In a small way, if we can show in our little city here that we can all get along and respect each other, I think the world can learn from that,” he says. He chooses each colour in the blink of an eye; his paintings are designed spontaneously as they’re created, not planned beforehand. “I decided to do something original. I didn’t want to copy any artist or technique,” says Ghaderi, who purposely steered away from formal training and studying other artists’ work when he began painting two years ago. Before that, he was a poet and made movies. Because creating each project is a different experience, he never paints in a series. “If I do, then I’ll be betraying myself because I’ll be letting myself take over,” he says at his home overlooking the West Van seawall. TransLink to charge at all park-and-rides A minimum of $2 a day will be charged, according to TransLink’s new policy. “Prices will vary depending on the local markets,â€? TransLink vice-president Bob Paddon said Monday. “It will bring us much needed revenues.â€? TransLink projects it will raise $2.2 million by charging at the free lots and raising the prices at some of the pay lots. The South Surrey park-and-ride is already heavily overcrowded, which led TransLink this year to start towing incorrectly parked vehicles. Paddon said imposing pay parking should give motorists much better odds of finding a space at crowded lots in the future. The hope is that more drivers who use park and rides will simply leave their cars at home and catch feeder buses nearby to avoid the parking fees. TransLink plans to develop more park and rides in the future, including ones to serve the Evergreen Line in Port Moody and Coquitlam. About 3,500 of the 4,300 park-and-ride spaces TransLink controls are already pay parking.

ree parking will end at TransLink parkand-ride lots as the authority moves to pull in more cash. Most lots already charged, but the shift to all pay parking will come as a shock to motorists who use the 10 free lots, such as the South Surrey park-and-ride. Other free park-and-rides include lots in Ladner and Tsawwassen in Delta; Walnut Grove in Langley; Sexsmith in Richmond; Phibbs exchange, Park Royal mall, Westmount and Gleneagles on the North Shore. It may also mean users of the new 650-space Carvolth park-and-ride in Langley will also have to shell out to park there to take the new Highway 1 Rapid Bus. Provincial government officials said just last week there was no plan to charge motorists there but added it would be TransLink’s decision after Victoria hands over the nearly finished park-and-ride.

FROM THE EXPERTS AT THE MARKET THE SALMON SHOP As we speak, Kosta the Fishmonger is on the line to the fish boats off the coast of Haida Gwai (Queen Charlotte Islands). He’s ordering fresh halibut but not just any halibut. He picks only the biggest, they’re flakier and richer in oils, “that’s why they’re tender and have a sweeter flavour.” Also according to Kosta, this quintessential West Coast dish can be perfectly paired with a glass of Pinot Grigio. Be sure to make a trip to the Salmon Shop before for halibut season ends – November 15!

Shaw TV ending its live council broadcasts Live coverage is already a thing of the past in West Van and North Van district; now North Van city is fighting back TODD COYNE S TA F F R E P O RT E R
S
haw TV is killing its live council broadcasts in several Metro Vancouver municipalities, including across the North Shore. While the service was quietly cancelled in both West Vancouver and North Vancouver district last week, the City of North Vancouver is appealing to higher powers like the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission, the Union of B.C. Municipalities and the court of public opinion to save the live programming. At Monday’s city council meeting, councillors railed against Shaw’s move to cancel the live TV coverage and voted unanimously to invite Shaw executives to come before council and defend the decision in a live Shaw-televised debate. “Shaw cable should explain why they’re doing this,” Mayor Darrell Mussatto said. “Come before us on a public TV night so they can explain to the public why they’re not going to show us on live TV. I think it’s absolutely wrong.” Should the telecom accept the invite, they’ll have to hurry as their next live city council broadcast on Oct. 15 is already slated to be their last. Shaw will also cancel its live council coverage in both Burnaby and New Westminster on that day. In a letter to the North Vancouver city clerk dated Sept. 7, Shaw TV’s program manager Jacob Gish cited “scheduling conflicts” for the company’s decision to end the live broadcasts, which previously showed one live meeting of each North Shore council per month on Channel 4. Mussatto said he doesn’t believe scheduling conflicts are the cable company’s real motive. “This is unacceptable,” he said. “They’re just doing it for profit.” The mayor characterized the move as part of a long, ongoing erosion of local coverage at the station. “Most of us will remember that Shaw cable used to have quite a presence here on Pemberton Avenue in North Vancouver,” Mussatto said, referring to the Shaw studio that closed down in 2005. “And I remember very clearly at that time they came and said, ‘We want your support. We’re going to continue to support you and your community, we’re just not going to have the studio here,” he continued. “Now look what’s happened. Now they’re saying no live broadcasts, at least, on one of the three nights that they show it. That’s wrong. That’s absolutely wrong. And we have to make it known in no uncertain terms that it’s unacceptable to the city for them to make this decision.” In exchange for the live Monday evening broadcast, Shaw offered the city its choice of two later time slots: Monday night at 11 p.m. or Tuesday at noon. Initially council was poised to accept the Tuesday afternoon time slot, albeit with resignation. But an amendment tabled by Coun. Craig Keating and approved by all of council rejected either choice in favour of fighting to save the live coverage. “I just don’t think we should be giving Shaw an out on this,” Keating said. “I agree with Councillor [Don] Bell’s comments about the fact that Shaw gets to use our streets; they get to dig it up whenever Craig Keating time they need because they need to put in their equipment.” He was referring to earlier comments from Coun. Bell, who told council he believes Shaw is reneging on its duties to the community while reaping all the benefits the municipality gives in exchange, such as service licences and priority access to municipal infrastructure. “It’s part of their responsibility — certainly their community responsibility if not a legal responsibility — in terms of the privileges they’re given with their licence to run the services they do,” Bell said. “If they’ve got a problem, tell us what the problem is,” he added. “This is a responsibility that they have and should not shirk” In the District of North Vancouver, Shaw TV has already aired its last live council broadcast, cancelling the service on Sept. 10. According to district spokeswoman Jeanine Bratina, the district has no current plans to oppose the cancellation. Likewise in West Vancouver, where acting spokeswoman Donna Powers told The Outlook that Shaw recently notified the district its last live council broadcast in July was its last, period. West Vancouver’s council rebroadcast date is also changing on Oct. 31 — from 9 p.m. Tuesday to noon on Friday — in a move that’s causing concern for at least one West Vancouver councillor. “It’s too bad,” Coun. Bill Soprovich told The Outlook. “On Friday at noon there’s not many people home. “To switch to Friday at noon, why even bother?” he added. The meetings of all three North Shore councils will remain available live on each municipality’s website, but that’s little consolation for many North Shore residents, according to Soprovich. “Many older people don’t use a computer at all,” he said. “They watch it on the television.” Shaw Communications did not respond to The Outlook’s requests for interviews before press time. tcoyne@northshoreoutlook.com

ot nine seconds to spare? This car will take you from zero to 60 mph — and back to zero — in less than that. The HTT Pléthore fits the definition of supercar, says Jeffrey Scott of HTT, a Canadian company that conceived, designed and built the Pléthore. Earlier this month a prototype of the car was on display at the Luxury Supercar Weekend at Vancouver’s VanDusen Garden. Supercars roam in the rarefied atmosphere of $100,000–plus automobiles. They are sleek, low to the ground and furiously quick. Recently at Q4 restaurant on West Broadway, during an invitation-only event hosted by Autoform’s Aaron Van Pykstra and Mike Wood, well-heeled potential buyers, or dreamers, could admire a deep orange Pléthore at rest on the sidewalk. Plethora, a word of Greek origin signifies overabundance, a fitting name for this vehicle. The beautifully sculpted body is made of carbon fiber and a Chromolly roll cage is welded to the frame. A supercharged seven-litre, eight-cylinder engine produces the heartbeat. That’s almost one litre per pot. Power is estimated at an untamed 750 horses, blasting the car to a top speed of 247 mph, long past a Boeing 747’s take-off speed. With that, brakes are of the kind found in Formula 1 racing. The weight balance of the car, longitudinal and transversal, is near a perfect 50/50. Would you like to take it out for a drive? That’s easy. Although so far, very few people

have had the privilege of testing the 2013 prototype model. Just bring in a certified cheque for $750,000 (a bargain at $1,000 per horse) or arrange for a deposit to place your order. Then, glide in through the power “scissor” doors and relish in the smell of fine leather and the snug ambiance of the cockpit. Take one deep breath, then press the button that fires the engine and, let the music play. From low bass notes, to a wild high-pitched hiss, your right foot conducts an orchestra of heavenly, or hellish, dimension. The driver’s seat will accommodate six-footers comfortably. Should you want to bring two buddies for an adrenaline fix, or, if you lead a complicated life, there is one seat on each side of the driver’s, keeping the balance perfect. Come home to natural gas Natural gas offers comfort, convenience and value Your home is perhaps your most important investment. It costs money to maintain it, and needs energy to run it. By choosing the right energy for the right use, you can maximize energy efficiency and value for your energy dollars. Natural gas is a good choice for heating, whether it’s hot water for a shower or warmth from the furnace or fireplace. It’s also great for barbecuing burgers on the patio. And, with the variety of stylish natural gas appliances and rebates available, upgrading your appliances to natural gas is more affordable. Find energy efficiency rebates that meet your needs at fortisbc.com/offers.
Natural gas makes your summers seem endless A natural gas barbecue never runs out of fuel. If you have a natural gas patio heater or fire pit, you can stay outside long after summer‘s over. And when that blustery storm hits, you can stay warm and well fed with a natural gas fireplace and range. Both will continue working during a power outage. For comfort, convenience and value balance your home’s energy mix with natural gas. Visit fortisbc.com/gasisgood to watch our video on how natural gas fits into your everyday life.
