The Grand Forks Wildlife Assn. (GFWA) is looking to grant the Wildlife Hall to another nonprofit group before it decides to close for good. Brian Hancock, president of the GFWA, noted that the hall was originally granted to the club from the city. “That was part of the deal when we received the hall,” he said. “The building was actually brought there in two pieces and put together. The money was granted so we can’t sell it for financial gain.”

Golf Club celebrates The Christina Lake Golf Club is celebrating its 50th birthday. Kevin Maffioli, (GM) says a group of individuals that originally got together and purchased $100 shares. “Johnny Goffinet was the man that spearheaded it and he was the founder of Johnny’s Motel in (Grand Forks), so he ran Johnny’s Motel and then decided to have a golf course in the Grand Forks and Christina Lake area,” Maffioli explained, adding the course was started on what was originally the Ball ranch.

Arts/Health Introducing the good kind of “busted TIMOTHY SCHAFER West Kootenay Advertiser

Time to turn that daydreaming about breasts into a good cause. The last phase of the Busted traveling art show – raising awareness around breast health issues and cancer – is coming home to Nelson tonight Sept. 20 (7 o’clock) at the Spiritbar in the Hume Hotel. After six months of touring the West Kootenay with 15 plaster busts of 13 women— ranging in age from 17 to 71—professionally and artfully designed by 15 Kootenay artists, the show that began as one woman’s homage to her mother’s battle with breast cancer has come home to where it started. Busted: Art Auction Extravaganza hosted by Sara Cadeau will see the final bids placed on the 15 busts next week, bringing the show to a close with some of the best talent in the West Kootenay as well, said show curator, artist, model and visionary Safire Jones. Jones said it was bittersweet seeing the tour end after she began it late last spring, less than one year after her mother died from the disease. “It’s been an amazing journey and experience sharing heart warming stories with

SaďŹ re Jones will host the ďŹ nale of her sixmonth Busted art show TONIGHT - 7 o’clock at Spiritbar in Nelson. The night will be highlighted by live music and performances as well as the conclusion of the art auction of 15 artistcreated busts of West Kootenay women. Della Schafer photo

all of these women, she said about the show’s odyssey. “This has been such a fulfilling project that is now coming to fruition. And that end is the Art Auction Extravaganza, the final chance to see the busts together in their colourful countenances, and perhaps bring a pair home on a successful bid. The show at the Spiritbar begins with live music, multimedia—plaster casting (by Safire Jones) and painting (by Avrell Fox)—hoola hoopers, shadow dancers and body painters, all culminating at 10 p.m. with the end of the silent auction. But not the end of the night. The music and gyrating on the dance floor continues until midnight.

The roster of singer and songwriters for the night is staggering, including Roxanne Hall, Lana Benson, Pauline Lamb, and Safire Jones, perfomance dance by Slava Doval and DJs Morning Glory and Lady V. providing an electronic presence to get you grooving on the dance floor. “There will be a lot of women performing that night, said Jones. “With all of the talented artists, models and performers involved with this project I am expecting to see a diverse audience in attendance at the Spiritbar where the back room lounge will be transformed into the “Busted Gallery“ auction site. The funds raised by the show will be split between national

breast cancer support group Willow—run by breast cancer survivors—and a gift for Kootenay Lake Hospital’s oncology ward. Willow is a support network for people living with a diagnosis of cancer, as well as those who are touched by the disease through a loved one, making sure no one faces cancer alone. The organization ( w w w. w i l l ow. or g ) helps people across the country with a wide range of supports, including peer counselling, self examination information, alternative and traditional treatments, a huge resource centre and links to other helpful organizations. The highest bid for one bust so far has been $225, with a few of the 15 busts still without a bid. A startling fact considering the list of artists in the show reads like a who’s who of the West Kootenay scene: Sam Stevenson, Kelly Shepely, Rabi’a, Wendy Watkin, Cindy Moser, Christina Smith, Avrell Fox, Pixie Johnson, Natasha Smith, Cassia Barrett, Bubzee, Della Schafer, Safire Jones, Marin Patenaude and Alana Cronshaw. The show has toured the Kootenay region—including Nelson’s Ourglass Studio where it started,

mous for its Sunday chicken dinners prepared by an excellent Chinese cook named Goh. The Snows sold to Nelson’s Billy Ward in 1919, but after the CPR opened its rail line from Procter to Kootenay Landing in 1931, the hotel’s heyday was over. It changed hands a few more times and was renamed the Holi-

day Inn before the furnishings were auctioned in 1966 and the building was demolished. On the site today are several homes. • An original photo from the Boundary ghost town of Camp McKinney sold for the lone bid of $100. It depicts half a dozen men inside some sort of mill. Pencilled in purple at the bottom

is “Pat Graham, McKinnie [sic] mill. The seller, from Vernon, believed it depicted a steam engine and 10 stamp mill brought from the abandoned Rainbow mine of Golden, Wash., in February 1894 — in a trail four feet deep in snow. The photographer was named Baker — another of his Camp McKinney photos appears in Bill Barlee’s Gold Creeks and Ghost Towns, while a number of half-tone reproductions were published in the BC Mining Record in 1900. Camp McKinney was founded in 1893 on the southeastern slop of Baldy mountain, following the discovery of several mines, chief among them the CaribooAmelia. When the mine closed in 1904, so did the town.

Rossland briefs The Joe Hill Coffeehouse started back up on Sunday after the usual summer hiatus. The show was the first performance for guitarist and singer Jason Thomas. Coffeehouse favourites Michael Gifford and Les Carter took up their guitars and played folk and country.

Project Somos: The founders of a project that aims create a self-sustaining children’s village in Guatemala spoke in Rossland Saturday night. Project Somos founders Heather Knox and Greg Kemp talked about their experiences in the past two years creating the project. The goal is to create

seven family homes which would take in orphaned and abandoned children in Guatemala. The homes will eventually be made self-sustaining by farming, voluntourism and other innovative ideas. For more info or to learn how to volunteer go to www.projectsomos.org.

Another in a series about Kootenaiana trading on eBay. Two lithographed postcards depicting long-vanished hotels on opposite shores of Kootenay Lake sold for healthy prices of late. The first, of the CPR’s Kootenay Lake Hotel at Balfour, went for $88.50 US. The same card has popped up before but never fetched anywhere near as much. Erected on a bench overlooking the town, the Tudor and chateau-style hotel opened in 1911 and boasted 50 rooms, stone fireplaces, a large rotunda, and a steam-winched cable car that brought guests up from the sternwheeler landing (the alternative was several flights of stairs). The outbreak of World War I forced the hotel’s premature closure, but in 1917 it re-opened as a sanatorium for convalescing soldiers, and later hosted the Prince of Wales. (Incredibly, footage of this visit survives and can be viewed at britishpathe. com/video/canadiantour. The Kootenay content begins at the 14:17 mark.)

The sanitorium closed in 1920, and the building was demolished in 1929, its lumber recycled into several Nelson homes. Less extravagant, but no less interesting, was the Outlet Hotel at Procter. While it was depicted on several lithographed postcards, a rare one showing a group on the lawn sold recently for $76 US. The hotel began life in 1891 as the home of community namesake Thomas Procter, and doubled a hunting and fishing lodge. It opened to the general public in 1901. Girl Guides program – it’s not just for girls anymore KARL YU West Kootenay Advertiser

The Girl Guides of Canada held a registration night in Grand Forks on Sept. 13 and girls weren’t the only ones who could sign up. “We’re trying to get as many girls as we can and women,” explained Linda Sheppard, commissioner and unit guider for the Granby district. “We’re open from age five

years old and up for females.” The Girls Guides are broken up into Sparks (five and sixyear-olds), Brownies (seven to eight), Guides (nine to 11), Pathfinders (12 to 14), Junior Leaders (15 to 17) and then after that, Senior Branches – there is no age ceiling. Sheppard said the Girl Guides encourage crafts, arts, music and other positive endeavours which

help members grow up with a positive attitude. “They have a positive, safe environment to hang out and do things. We go camping and do all kinds of wonderful things,” Sheppard said. The Granby District Commissioner and unit guider pointed to work that the Girl Guides in Grand Forks did, which includes helping out the lo-

cal Royal Canadian Legion branch with poppy sales and volunteer work with shut-ins. She said that the Guides don’t tend to do fund raising outside of the organization, as that is reserved for the Girl Guides’ cookie sales, which Sheppard said is their main fundraiser and happens twice a year. “We have the classics in the spring and now, just com-

ing up is our mint, chocolate cookies,’ said Sheppard. “This year we’re having a whole new packaging for them and it’s going to be really bright and you won’t be able to miss it.” Females in the Granby district – which encompasses an area from Christina Lake to Beaverdell – can contact Sheppard at 250443-1529 for more information.

With fuel prices at multi-year highs and winter soon approaching, Toyota is offering impressive discounts on its most renowned and fuel-efficient line of compact cars - Corolla, Matrix and Yaris Hatchback. But with limited supply of 2012s in stock and Castlegar Toyota’s desire to make its compact vehicle customers the safest on the road this winter, you must hurry or you’ll be left in the cold.

By now, most of us have become familiar with the savings account called the TFSA (Tax-Free Savings Account). This particular savings vehicle is approaching its fifth anniversary since inception, as it was first introduced in January 2009. It was originally introduced as a rainyday account but it has also become a great savings account for first-time homebuyers, retirement savers, or those looking for tax efficiency. Many banking institutions were quick to introduce this to their customers without fully explaining the benefits, rules and ramifications of how to utilize the account appropriately. Most people opened up a TFSA but weren’t able to fully fund them to the $5,000 annual limit. Although, there are no penalties associated with withdrawing money from a TFSA, most people didn’t realize the funds cannot be re-deposited until the following calendar year or over-contribution penalties could apply. For those who did maximize their $5,000 contribution, some ran into major income tax hassles and penalties in 2010, when they were “perceived” to have overcontributed beyond their $5,000 limit. As an example, if someone had added $5,000 to their TFSA that very first year in 2009, and then withdrew $4,000 a few months later (but only really needed $1,000) – then re-deposited the leftover $3,000 – the government would have just kept track of the deposits. In Revenue Canada’s eyes, all they could see was the original

$5,000 deposit and a subsequent $3,000 deposit which showed a total contribution of $8,000 to the TFSA. The “perceived” $3,000 over contribution to the TFSA, meant the customer was faced with a oneper-cent penalty tax for each month they were in an over-contribution position. For those who have yet to open a TFSA, there’s contribution room aplenty. The current contribution limit for 2012 is $5,000. The federal government sets the contribution limit annually so future annual limits are subject to Ottawa’s discretion. For Canadians who have not yet opened a TFSA, they have their full contribution limit available to them. Individuals can contribute up to $20,000 in 2012, which would absorb their 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 maximum contribution limits. From a financial planning perspective, for those who do have the disposable income, (especially those in a higher tax bracket) we would consider that they contribute and max out their registered retirement savings plan contributions first. If they’ve already maxed out those contributions, then there’s the ability to put the excess disposable income into a tax free savings account. Another financial planning strategy is if you have a spouse or partner who has little or no income and a very low RSP contribution room, regardless of age, the TFSA would be the vehicle we’d recommend they put any savings into so it’s tax sheltered. Here are some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind when managing your TFSA: Continued on P. A15

Nelson making progress in pursuit of affordable housing West Kootenay Advertiser

The City of Nelson passed the first three readings of a new bylaw last week that will formalize a Nelson Housing Committee advocating for the development of affordable housing units within the city. City councillor Donna Macdonald said the creation of the new committee will solidify and define the relationship between housing issues in Nelson and the City. “It means a formal recognition that housing affordability is a really critical issue in the community,” said Macdonald. “As we’ve had this ad hoc Nelson Housing Forum for about three years, which has been great

but it has now moved into a more formal relationship with the City.” The Nelson Housing Committee came at the recommendation of the forum in the recent housing strategy. “[We] made the recommendation last year and spent some time reviewing our mandate and our goal and we came up with a draft terms of reference that almost all the members of the forum agreed to,” said Macdonald. “That was the basis of the bylaw that was then developed.” Unlike the housing forum where members were interested parties in the community, the committee will be formally appointed by city council.

“The meetings will still be open and people can attend, but the actual members of the committee will be formally appointed by council and we will have a bit more staff support, I hope,” said Macdonald. While city staff will have “teeth” in implementing policy and decisions by council, the committee will advise staff on various issues related to housing. “It’s a committee so PLEASE READ THE FINE PRINT: Offers valid until October 31, 2012. it doesn’t really have teeth, that is really in the purview of staff and as developments come forward there is always a number of items on the table whether it is putting in a sidewalk or replacing a sewer line or including public art, it’s always a bit of a negotiation, but certainly we have more clear guidelines in place for staff now and rules about cash contributions if actually housing isn’t

ing reserve fund or at their request review a development proposal that includes some ideas for affordable housing and the committee could review

those to see if what is proposed addresses identified needs.” The bylaw will be adopted at a city council meeting in October.

Rossland gearing up for a grand reopening of downtown core ARNE PETRYSHEN West Kootenay Advertiser

All summer Rossland has been in the midst of the biggest construction upgrades its ever seen, but with autumn closing in, so too is the project in its final stretch. The City of Rossland and the Rossland Chamber have been working on a grand re-opening which is tentatively planned for Oct. 27. The date was originally planned a week earlier, but due to the

uncertainty of construction problems, the date was moved. Coun. Cary Fisher brought up the topic of a re-opening in a recent council meeting, noting that many of Rossland’s businesses had struggled over the summer. “I assume that we’re having a ribbon cutting at some point for this thing,” Fisher said. “I’ve been talking to some of the businesses to create an opportunity for them, it’s not going to cost us a lot of money

printing up some invitations and having some people invited to an opening.” Fisher said that in talking with local businesses, business is not what it was in years

without construction, though businesses do understand the need for the infrastructure upgrade. “Our retail is down a lot in town, and to their credit, the busi-

nesses that I’ve spoken with understand that it had to be done,” he said. “They’re stoically putting up with it at the moment and I think that, while some

of them may be more vocal than others, it’s pretty much across the board the numbers that I’m getting. I think they deserve a lot of credit.” Fisher said contractors are doing a good job on the project and city staff is trying to communicate as much as possible. “I know everyone is trying,” he said. “It’s pretty tough, those are families struggling to get by every day. Just a little more empathy towards them I think is worthy, and

this idea that we have something, this grand opening of the town.” Fisher said he hopes people can come and see the new layout and maybe do a bit of shopping in the local stores and coffee shops as well. Mayor Greg Granstrom said ideas were being pursued, giving an example of a photo of everyone in town packed onto Columbia, and that something in the near future would be brought to council for input.

Trail brief Teck has admitted in a U.S. court that more than 100 years of historic effluent from its operations in Trail have polluted the Columbia River in Washington. Teck Metals made the “admission of fact” in an agreement reached Monday with the Colville Confederated Tribes over environmental damage caused by effluent discharges dating back to 1896. As a result, the agreement under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and

Liability Act (CERCLA) regarding certain facts precludes a trial that was expected to commence Monday if the agreement had not been made. Under the agreement Teck stated some hazardous substances in the slag and effluent discharged from the Teck Trail Operations between 1896 and 1995 ended up in the Upper Columbia River in the U.S. Teck communications manager Richard Deane said the court proceedings were one more step in the process of righting the alleged wrong.

‘Look and You Will Find It’ (bronze) Kate Christopher’s haunting entry ‘Look and You Will Find It’ was originally ceramic. That piece won First Place in the sculpture category at the Minnesota State Fair prior to being cast in bronze where it received an Honourable Mention and placement as part of the City Art Walking Tour in Mankako, Minnesota. While clay continues to be her main medium to work in, the Mahtomedi, Minnesota-based sculptor will occasionally re-configure works she feels will be enhanced by the bronzing process. “I’ve taken foundry courses throughout my sculpting career, but currently I do all my casting work with American Bronze Casting. It’s a family owned and operated foundry in Osceola, Wisconsin – great people to work with. “I continue to work primarily with clay though, because the firing process is always unique and the end results can surprise also. It is a collaboration between me and the fire. It is like life - controlled chaos. You never know quite how everything will turn out, but usually interesting things happen and sometimes something incredible happens.” ‘Look and You Will Find It’ is certainly interesting, and arresting. Six figures stand like penitents, five with heads bowed and eyes downcast. In the centre, one of the figures has his face raised upwards. They are hairless with undefined body shapes yet the facial detail is sharp; the incongruity between the five figures sur-

rounding the central one draws the eye to him. As Christopher explains, the sculpture takes its name from a quote by Sophocles: “Look and you will find it – what is unsought will go undetected.” It is somewhat emblematic of the bronzes she has been creating lately – tightly knit groups of male figures, usually bald – like ‘Paradox’, ‘Guardedly Optimistic’ and ‘Queuing Up’. She does do female figurines too, sometimes incorporating the sexes in one work, like her ceramic ‘On a Wing and a Prayer’. The same stylistic figures form an outward facing circle, some with birds on their heads. “My figurative sculptures attempt to express particular emotions such as awe, grace, alienation, hope and longing,” she says. “Emotions that can be seen in people during the silences when they think no one is looking. Some of these are lonely or painful, others trans-

formative. I strive to capture the entreating look, the hopedfor grace even in the mundane stereotype of the suited male figures waiting in line or gathered in a group.” Many of these emotions are captured in Christopher’s bronze on display here in Castlegar. The pain and aloneness are readily visible, but so too is the understanding and acceptance of a higher presence that brings serenity, grace and calm to at least one figure in this captivating work of art.

CASTLEGAR SCULPTUREWALK 2013 CALL TO ARTISTS Castlegar Sculpturewalk is now accepting applicants from sculptors to take part in our 2013 event. The winner of the coveted People’s Choice Award will be purchased by The City of Castlegar for permanent display, in addition to a cash prize of $3000. Sculptures will also be judged and awarded on Artistic Merit, with prizes in that category totaling $5000.

ffor th the

Week

September S e 21, 2012

Tip of the Week: Equinox is here, autumn here in the northern and spring in the southern hemisphere. Either way you look at it the hours of actual daylight and night are equal. Symbolically, this refers to equal masculine and feminine. The point of balance referring to the natural state of equality between the forces of light and dark, masculine and feminine and so on illustrates a dynamic process. There is nothing static in creation. From the micro to the macro and everything in between life is ever in a state of movement and flux, change and transformation, involution and evolution. Stagnation and resistance of any kind evokes eventual revolution of some kind, geological, economical, and political and so on. People too therefore are subject to this steady, natural process of change. It is the instinct to survive that often reactively resists this natural flow. This is what is meant by the spiritual advocation of the importance of overcoming the tendency to be ego-centered. The ego by its nature is oriented to comfort, familiarity and security. This is natural and good, unless the reaction is over emphasized, in which case resistance to the natural flow occurs, which manifests as various forms of denial and/or controlling tendencies. Everyone is susceptible and beyond rights and ethics, the consequence is some form of ‘dis-ease’ or pain. The flow of change is natural and resistance is ultimately futile. Accepting and respecting change implies conscious, creative cooperation which may be deemed the very essence of wisdom. Helping people this way is a core feature of the purpose of Astrology.

Communications and negotiations with significant others regarding adjustments for the sake of health and harmony is a main focus now. As the season changes the weather naturally follow. Responding accordingly is ideal. Sometimes, the degrees of adjustments to the changes are larger than usual, like for you now.

Creating beauty is the call now. What constitutes beauty is for you to decide. It could be a cleaner living space, or an expression of art or quality time shared with loved ones…. There is a strong emphasis on home and family. Whatever it is, you want more of it. How to realize your goals is the other question and to this end you want answers, guidance and/or the right tools.

Significant changes close to home continue. Creating a more appealing environment implies cleaning and clearing and/or simply freshening things up. Sharing your plans and ideas with others feels important. The time has come to turn some of your dreams into reality. How to get a lot done without big expenses is a key question.

Changes in your usual mode of perception are causing your to re-evaluate some of your priorities. The opposite may be true as well. A rich and somewhat intense series of exchanges with others has virtually become the new norm and this will continue. For the sake of the future you may feel the need to make some key investments.

Building upon new foundations and improving upon existing ones continues. It’s like adding a new section to your house and doing some other renovations at the same time. How this applies in your life depends on your current status. Activating key communications and exchanges of creative intentions indicates that you are tuned-in to your destiny flow.

Initiating new leads is a central theme now. Entering new territory somehow is a good sign. Your sights are set on the future. New knowledge, methods, tools and/or approaches are also implied. Rich and meaningful exchanges with others are in the plot. Balancing your ambition levels with those of your actual energy levels and time restraints is a central challenge.

It can be darkest just before dawns light. This may be the case for you now. Dark need not be translated as bad. Yet mystery, confusion and perhaps uncertainty are real possibilities. The really good news is that the new light will appear very soon, two weeks at the most. It will likely reveal changes or the need for them in your overall lifestyle.

Changes in your public and/or professional spheres continue to roll in. At least with whatever is happening others are taking notice. This trend will continue for a while yet. Balancing a practical attitude with a philosophical one is likely. Some things are more factual while others are more relative. Be willing to compromise to get things done.

Paying attention to the details of the bigger picture is an important theme in your life and has again been activated. Now you must take an executive approach. Meetings with others in positions of influence and power are featured. Ambition levels are rising and everyone wants to win. While honesty is the best policy it may not be what happens.

Nurturing a new mode of power continues. With this claim, equal amounts of responsibility will be required. Deciphering what this might imply and directing your focus accordingly is likely and ideal. Getting and/or receiving instruction and training are highlighted. Be deliberate with your intentions because the bar is about to be raised.

Making key connections has been an important theme of late and this will continue. Emphasis upon cooperative efforts is a rising theme. You have entered an important learning curve. Knowing how and when to be assertive and when to yield is featured. Precision and depth in your communications implies qualified communications that is clear for all concerned.
