These sessions are open to all interested in income supports – seniors, family members, and those planning retirement. There is no charge and refreshments will be available.

Councillors rescinded a motion from a previous meeting and instead asked staff to present a proposal for relocating the facility during 2013 budget deliberations later this year. Initially they approved a project to spend several thousand dollars to make changes to the station and erect signage so that those using it would queue on Industrial Drive rather than on Highway 20 as now

happens. However discussion with UFA manager John Clayton prompted reconsideration. He expressed concerns about RV owners using his site to turn around and blocking other access points to the UFA site, according to notes provided to councillors. Councillor Laverne Asselstine agreed. “If we make a change it’s going to seriously impact his business. The point is we need a proper sanidump site.” He added it

should be a priority for the 2013 budget. “It’s more an issue of traffic safety on Highway 20,” said Councillor Sean McIntyre. He indicated that some vehicles are stopping in the driving lane waiting to turn into the dump station

and obstructing other vehicles travelling on the highway. “Every time I go down there there’s half a dozen vehicles sitting there. Let’s do it right, never mind the temporary stuff,” said Asselstine.

Brown’s giving cavity nesting ducks a bit of help with his boxes by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

One warm fall afternoon last week found Ken Brown out on his driveway painting duck nesting boxes which he’ll eventually mount near his home in Norglenwold and at other locations around the lake. Brown, a member of three different fish and game clubs, got the original pattern from a fellow member of the Sarcee club in Calgary — Bryce Chase. Since then he’s been building the boxes from scrap lumber and situating them where they are available for goldeneye ducks, those which normally nest in cavities in dead trees. Some times, he said, there are several duck eggs in the boxes simultaneously. Brown said he’s an avid supporter of the work of fish and game associations. He’s a member of the Sarcee club, also the organization’s in Sylvan Lake and Red Deer. After painting last week, he was committed to help the Red Deer club with their casino fundraiser. Then his next project is to build some bat boxes.

Frisbees a unique fundraising idea to assist Rotary’s Mexico wheelchair project by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

When the need for wheelchairs in a poverty stricken area of Mexico was raised earlier this year, Rotary members in Sylvan Lake and across Central Alberta were quick to answer the call. Now the largest contingent ever of Rotarians, their family and friends are planning a trip to Huatulco to deliver about 400 wheelchairs in February. At least 30 people are going, said Bonnie Ganske during an interview last week. She and husband Dale are residents of Sylvan Lake half the year and Huatulco the

other half of the year. They were also on the first Rotary wheelchair delivery trip to Huatulco almost ten years ago. All those participating pay their own expenses to get to Huatulco and most will be hosted in home stays with local families or snowbirds from the United States and Canada who winter in the southern climate. The trip is scheduled for Feb. 11-25 with some people participating for one week and others spending two weeks. While there they’ll get to experience a bit of the local culture while assisting in wheelchair deliveries. Ganske explained

to raise funds for half a container load of wheelchairs, 140 of them, but that was quickly met,” said Ganske. Then they’d raised enough money, $42,000, for a full container load of 280 and learned they were all needed by the social service agencies they were working with in Mexico. So they raised the goal once again to purchase another half container load and have nearly accomplished

that for a total of approximately 400 wheelchairs! The funding is not just from Rotary, said Ganske. It’s also from businesses, individuals and fundraising activities. The cost of an individual chair is $150 and people still wishing to may also donate one in their name or in memory of a loved one. “Donations are still invited and tax receipts are available,” she said. A unique fundraising activity that Ganske created is the sale of lightweight, foldable frisbees that double as Huatulco air conditioners (a hand held and operated fan). The logo on the frisbees was developed by Brenda Kolasa, a graphic designer and member of the Red Deer East Rotary Club. At $2 each their purpose is two-fold, she explained. They make great gifts for kids, stocking stuffers or to pack in campaigns such as Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes. The frisbees are

available locally at Canadian Tire, Best Body Fitness and Lakeview Computers as well as from other Rotary members. They’ve been sold by members at CentreFest in Red Deer and Shake The Lake in Sylvan. The other opportunity is for people to purchase the frisbees and donate them back to Rotarians who are going to Mexico so they may be distributed to youngsters who invariably crowd around during wheelchair deliveries in various villages. This time the area receiving the wheelchairs extends out from Huatulco in about a 100 kilometre radius through rural Oaxaca state. The deliveries, which the Rotary members are involved with, take place in a central location in a community and become a bit of a celebration, said Ganske. Various homes, garages spray painted, hot tub damaged Saturday, Sept. 8th 2:28 a.m. - RCMP attended a single vehicle rollover on Highway 11 east of Eckville. A 911 call was placed after witnesses saw a vehicle in the ditch on its roof and a female passenger trapped under the vehicle. The female was removed from

under the vehicle and was transported by air to Edmonton. The male driver is charged with careless driving. Alcohol

was not a factor. Neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt. 8:57 a.m. - A complaint of vandalism resulted in an investigation after a traffic sign was pulled out of the ground on Perry Drive in Sylvan Lake. A truck parked near the location

also received extensive damage. A couple of rocks were used to damage the vehicle. 10:59 a.m. - A male is charged with assault in connection with an incident on Range Road 25 in Red Deer County. RCMP were called after a male threatened another

male at a work site resulting in a physical altercation. There were no weapons and no injuries are reported. 12:50 p.m. - A male is facing charges of impaired driving after a vehicle struck a deck and a tree on a residential property near Sylvan

The Rotary Clubs involved are working with the Canadian Wheelchair Foundation which subsidizes all shipping costs and incidentals for the equipment which is manufactured in China.

The Rotary Club in Huatulco, which numbers about 18 members, is the host club for the project and they’ll assist with deliveries and other activities for their visitors. The group going to Mexico “will find it a life changing experience,” said Ganske. “It enriches people’s lives, not just the recipients.” She remembers one man riding to a wheelchair delivery with his wife in the basket of his bicycle because she was an amputee. “They were so happy, so grateful, talked about how this would change her life, make it possible for her to get around their home, help their children. If they thanked us once, they thanked us 100 times and cried and cried. It’s so life changing.” Ganske said by giving these people wheels to move around they can move about not just on

Two other garages near the location were also vandalized. Monday, Sept. 10th 1:51 a.m. - A male is facing charges after a vehicle collided with a house on Herder Drive. A vehicle hit the side of a house and fled the scene northbound on Herder Drive. Members followed a trail of fluid to a parking garage and located the damaged vehicle inside. The registered owner is facing charges. No one in the residence was injured.

That’s right, just 100 days to January 1st and the official historical designation of 50th Street as “Centennial Street”. For months and months a planning task force has been preparing to mark this important milestone in our community’s history. Terry Fox Run presents a cause worth fighting for I’m not quite sure when I was first introduced to the Terry Fox Run. Whenever it was, it became an annual tradition during my school years. I vaguely remember pledge sheets and a ceremonial walk around the school field while I was in junior high. I have much stronger memories of my high school’s Terry Fox Run. Though the run takes place at many schools, my high school adopted it as if it was our own. Teachers began talking about it during the first week of school. Fundraising forms were distributed, and students were challenged to raise as much

money as possible. We had our first period off to take part in the run. For some reason, the school had developed a tradition of wearing pyjamas to the run. I never understood the connection. I was too self-conscious to wear pyjamas, but many of my classmates and teachers were not. It was not uncommon for my teacher to be wearing a bathrobe as she conducted class later in the day. I participated in the run along with everyone else. We lined up in an orderly fashion and filed out of the school. The weather, at this time, was always brisk. Leaves

crunched under our feet as we walked around the neighbourhood and through the park. Along the way, we passed signs representing each province, symbolic of a journey across Canada. When we arrived back at the school we were served a breakfast of pancakes or muffins. A DJ played music in the field as we milled around, delaying the time until we had to head back to class. Though I liked getting out

of class, I liked the pancakes, and I liked the DJ, the real reason for the Terry Fox Run was about more than just those things. As everyone knows, Terry Fox was an ordinary person who wanted to run across Canada 30 years ago to raise money for cancer research. He had been diagnosed with the disease himself, and lost his right leg. He began his journey in St. John’s, Newfoundland, but had to end it in Thunder Bay, Ontario when his cancer spread. Terry Fox’s legacy continues to live on, as every year people participate in the run

around Canada and around the world. According to the Terry Fox Foundation website, over $600 million has been raised for cancer research. Cancer kills indiscriminately. It doesn’t care how big, how old, or how healthy you are. It doesn’t care if you have a loving family and friends. It doesn’t care if you have a promising future. While cancer has robbed many of their futures, with research, we can turn the tables and conquer it. Every step and every dollar puts us closer to that goal. It’s a disease we can fight, and something worth fighting for.

Hold a plebiscite on Highway 11-781 issue Dear Editor: I feel compelled to add my voice to the ongoing controversy of the Hwy. 781/11 fiasco. After reading Bob Swabeyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s letter to the editor last week I felt he made a compelling argument that should be listened to by our

town council. I believe this issue has gone well beyond reason and common sense. If we assume, for a moment, t h at Alberta Transportation is correct and the safest, most efficient route in and out of Sylvan Lake is Highway

20 then we are assuming t h at Alberta Transportation knows what is best for all of us. This is where the problem lies. It may very well be that they are correct but the people of Sylvan Lake do not agree.

It is the responsibility of our elected officials to listen to the electorate. There may be times that positions are not popular

Stop being pigheaded, look at facts, listen to people and admit mistake Dear Editor, I have lived in Sylvan Lake for five years now. When I go north on Highway 781 into town and come over the hill, I am awed by the beauty of the lake and quaintness of the downtown core. Every visitor to Sylvan Lake should enter our town from that direction. Their perception of our community would be SO positive at the onset! Unfortunately, the powersthat-be have decided that Highway 20 and the industrial park should be our gateway. Our originally quaint downtown area is being slowly decimated by some pretty incredibly stupid decisions, the biggest one being the blockage of traffic at highways 11 and 781. I live in the Sunny Siesta RV Park at that very corner. I am a senior citizen on a limited income. My 11-year-old car could barely

navigate the potholes on Memorial Trail and now, with it under construction, I have even more miles to travel, which means extra gasoline to buy. To top it off, I attended a town hall meeting, regarding this issue and am told that we are paying over $6 million dollars on this road-tonowhere! I am told that this roadblock has cut down on the accidents at our corner, and if true, that is a good thing; but, at what cost? Sitting outside at our picnic tables and listening to screeching tires and sirens, makes me think that my not be true. At the town meeting we were told that lights at this intersection would contravene some sort of law, that it would be too close to the lights at Hwy 20. What makes this area any different than Rocky Mountain House, where the lights are one after the other in close

succession? We were told that Sylvan will have to put up another set of lights at Memorial Trail and Hwy. 20, due to the dangers of people exiting Memorial on to the highway. We were told that this could be as high as another million. Why are we spending over $7 million, when one measly set of lights at the intersection of 781 and 11 would have fixed the problem? Apparently, even our MLA is confused over who is responsible for this debacle -— Sylvan Lake, Dept. of Transport or the people who did the “study”. Whoever it was, stop being so pigheaded, look at the facts, listen to the people who pay your salaries and correct this situation. It takes a big person to admit to a mistake and a big idiot not to! Despite the increase in students, he said they’ve got good class sizes which range from 16 to 30 students per class. “We’re hoping to hear from Central Office how we can support the students’ needs,” he said of the Grade 5 English class which is at 30 students. The primary focus — one of the main initiatives this year — will be on reading. Another is creating collaborative learning support teams. Three new staff members joined the school this fall.

Julie Smetaniuk is teaching Kindergarten French immersion. She taught at École La Prairie in Red Deer for four years which included Grade 4 students for one year and Kindergarten for three years. A resident of Sylvan Lake with her husband and two year old son, she received her Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Alberta’s Campus Saint-Jean. Grade two students so much fun for teacher by Aleisha Bosch Sylvan Lake News

Jessica Maloughney, Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic School’s newest grade two teacher, hopes to introduce music to her students. “Especially for the kids that have trouble with the core classes, it gives them a chance to shine in something they’re doing,” said Maloughney of optional subjects. Originally from Red

Jessica Maloughney Deer, Maloughney played the piano and the saxophone through

school. She was also involved with choir, which she would like to bring to Our Lady of the Rosary. “I think that would be a lot of fun for the kids,” said Maloughney. Both of Maloughney’s parents are teachers, which first exposed her to the profession. She attended Red Deer College for two years, and completed her teacher’s education at the University of Alberta.

“There’s nothing that I’ve ever enjoyed as much as teaching,” said Maloughney. “I love working with kids.” Maloughney previously taught at St. Teresa of Avila School in Red Deer. She is excited to be in a smaller school this year. “It’s good to try something new,” said Maloughney. She added that she particularly enjoys working with younger students, who have a sense of excite-

ment and wonder. “I love the look on their faces when they learn something they didn’t know before,” said Maloughney. “Grade two is so fun because everything you do becomes a big deal.” Maloughney is planning activities to celebrate her students’ 100th day of classes, in addition to a multicultural day.

worked as a substitute teacher for Red Deer Public School District before landing her current position. She attended Red Deer College for two years before finishing her teacher’s education at the University of Alberta. “I thought it would be a nice way to make a

difference,” said Baile of her decision to go into teaching, adding that she loves children, especially their curiosity. “They always have something to say and they always have a question.” Baile will teach the class of 22 students Wednesdays and Fridays. She is helping

plan an under-the-sea unit, where students will learn about marine life and make paper crabs and fishes. She will also help organize a field trip to a local veterinarian, and to the Red Deer Safety City Society, which aims to prevent injuries among children.

Cody High School who compete against other students in the region. Once the season gets underway, Powlesland said the curling rink is open from 9 a.m. to about 11 p.m. six days a week. Then there are also rental bookings at other times. Leagues include seniors daytime and ladies night on Mondays, mixed and super leagues on Tuesdays, mixed on Wednesdays, seniors daytime and men’s leagues on Thursdays, stick (two person) and adult beginners fun leagues on Fridays, a morning men’s open league, mixed morning open league and family and friends fun league on Sundays. A junior learn to curl program starts Oct. 22. The first bonspiel, the Sturling Open, takes place on Oct. 27. Registration is now available through the club’s website, sylvanlakecurling.wordpress.com/. It’s got plenty of information, Powlesland said. There’s also a meet and greet barbecue scheduled for Friday, Sept. 28 where registrations will be accepted. Ice making started this week, but league play doesn’t begin until the week of Oct. 14. Powlesland added the club is also looking for new recruits for

There’s a buzz of optimism when you talked to Joel Powlesland these days. Curling season is just around the corner and there’s been much work done in preparation. The club has grown as have the activities they’re planning for this year. “Five years ago we had three bonspiels, said Powlesland, general manager and head ice technician at Sylvan Lake Curling Club. “Now we’re up to ten.” “We’ve introduced adult and kid beginner leagues, and a new strictly adult beginner league. We’ve added a whole new program Sunday with extra leagues for men and mixed, family and friends as leagues — not just drop-in,” he said. “Every year it boils down to demand. The program is going to work very, very well for the club and community.” Powlesland attributes some of the growth to the involvement of school-age children in classes the club’s volunteers offer. Most area schools are taking advantage of the opportunity with about 600 kids going through the six one hour sessions last season. “We give them a taste of curling, a complete introduction to curling

With the growth in the club, expectations rise every year for ice and service levels. They’re always met but with an old building its becoming more and more trying, Powlesland said. Powlesland said he’s annually asked about the availability of summer ice in Sylvan, not just for area elite curlers but by international curlers who’d love to spend up to six weeks practising before the season gets underway. “It’s something we’re asked to do but just can’t accommodate at present. We hate to miss out on that opportunity.” “We used to have summer bonspiels in Sylvan that were a huge success. Bonspiels for a week with hundreds of people coming along with spouses, neighbours. They were here for the fun and love of it.” With a new facility he’s sure they can expand the curling season in Sylvan and attract many more tourists to the community.

Darrell was born in Red Deer, Alberta, a first child to parents Charlotte and Leonard Reynolds. After high school, Darrell became a plumber/ pipe fitter working in several northern communities such as: Grise, Fiord. Then working with Bruins plumbing in Red Deer. He then started his own plumbing company operating for several years in the Sylvan Lake area before taking a position with Quinn contracting in Joffre where he worked for the last 10 years. Darrell is survived by his loving wife Cindy, sons Michael (Pam, Tinsley, Tyrin of Unity Saskatchewan) Braeden and Brett of Sylvan Lake. His mother Charlotte, step-mother Joyce, brother Doug (Tara, Jessica, Jordan) sister Debbie (Mike, Kayla, Rachelle), sister Tanya (Mike, Brock, Cheyanne), father in law Ed (Dorothy) sister in law Judi (Chub, Shawn, Mindy, Ketch, Todd, Jennifer, Kendall, Greg, Teri and Kayla) brother in law Bill (Gwen, Jared, Janine, Hailey, Ashtyn, Deston, Megan, Jordan, Merissa, Jason and Taryn) sister in law Betty (Tyler, Kara, Clint, Davin and Ayla) numerous aunts, uncles cousins and friends. His other passion was his 1970 barracuda. Darrell could always be counted on to lend a hand, and his easy going zest for life will be missed by all whose lives he touched. A Funeral Service for Darrell will be held at the Alliance community church, Sylvan Lake on Friday, September 21 at 1:00 P.M. To honour Darrell’s memory donations will be gratefully accepted by the Red Deer Hospice Society or Unit 32P Red Deer Regional Hospital.
