Toy run benefits both young and old Arlene Jongbloets Free Press
The 2012 Toy Run in 100 Mile House was an event that gave and gave. The benefit ride for the 100 Mile House Food Bank Society took place Sept. 16, with the rally point in the A&W parking lot. The lot became a sea of chrome and rubber before the 47 motorcycles and 18 classic cars took off for a ride around the South Cariboo, laden with stuffed toys of every size and colour. The first stop was at Carefree Manor assisted living facility, where residents eagerly waited outside with arms full of toys ready to donate. The excited seniors waved as the long parade of bikes and cars thundered up the street and parked by the curb. The ride continued on to the Dusty Rose Neighbourhood Pub in 70 Mile House where riders stopped to collect a $70 donation, which was the proceeds from a meat draw. They carried on along Green Lake and to the Iron Horse Pub in Lone Butte where riders unloaded enough toys to fill the back of one car and a truck to the brim. Vehicles were lined up for a show ‘n shine and riders were invited to help themselves to a lunch donated by the pub. People had an opportunity to vote for their favourite vehicles, choosing a 1964 Corvette Stingray owned by John and Karen Wood as best car, and a 2007 Harley Davidson Street Glide owned by Eva Eriksen as best motorcycle. Cash donations collected throughout the day amounted to $864.22 and the money and toys were handed over to elated food bank secretary Kathy Haveman during the event. “It was an absolutely wonderful day. This means lots more food for the food bank and a great start to all of the toys we’ll be needing for Christmas.” Phil Doddridge co-ordinated the event with Steve Anderson and says he was Arlene Jongbloets photo thrilled with the results of the toy run. The Paper Bag Mystery Quilts made by members of the Cariboo Calico Quilters drew a lot of attention. They bobbed for wieners and got to howl their hearts out for prizes, making the 100 Mile House SPCA Paws for a Cause a perfect day for the 29 dogs that participated with 50 walkers in Centennial Park, Sept. 16. The event began with a walk around town, which took approximately one hour, and ended with canine games and prizes in the park. The focus of Paws for a Cause was to raise funds for the local SPCA, and at the end of the day, there was $1,264 tallied, with more expected to roll in, says group president Jennifer Appleby. Glen Strand and his dog, Smokey, raised the most at $255. “All in all, it was a good day,” says Appleby.

Understanding the emotional component of disease By John Theobold Do you feel uneasy about the quality of the health care you are being offered today? Is your healthcare provider unable to explain or heal your chronic diseases, for example psoriasis, fibromy-
algia, IBS, allergies, Alzheimer’s, etc.? Aside from physical trauma, orthodox medicine fails in many ways to deal with what ails us - prescribing solutions, many of which are pharmaceutical band aids, to deal with symptoms but failing to actually
deal effectively and conclusively with the real underlying issue. Most alternative healing modalities also miss the mark. Many will acknowledge emotions are an important underlying factor in disease, but do not have a deep enough understand-
Veteran licence plate expansion More veterans are able to take advantage of British Columbia’s popular veteran licence-plate program, which expanded on Sept. 1, 2012, to include serving members of the Canadian Forces who hold a trade qualification. The commemorative plates, which feature a red poppy on a powder blue background, have previously only been available to veterans
who served during war time or in a postwar capacity, as well as veterans who served during a NATO or UN operation, including members of the RCMP and municipal police services. “Currently serving members of the forces are every bit of deserving to show off their sacrifice in this way. The Kidzone area, with oversized bouncy toys, was a huge hit and great weather all weekend helped ensure a constant flow of children looking to burn off some energy.
The fall fair horse show was cancelled at the last minute due to a low number of entries and Grinyer says that was disappointing. “We missed it and really hope they’ll be back next year. Planningforthe2013 fair will begin soon she adds and they’ll be looking at ways to improve things. PUBLIC NOTICE
RECALL AND INITIATIVE ACT
This notice is published pursuant to section 4 of the Recall and Initiative Act. Approval in principle has been granted on an application for an initiative petition. The petition will be issued to proponent Dana Larsen on Monday, November 19, 2012 and signature sheets must be submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer by Monday, February 18, 2013. The Title of the Initiative is: An initiative to amend the Police Act. Summary of Initiative: The initiative draft Bill entitled, “Sensible Policing Act” proposes to amend the Police Act to no longer use provincial police resources on the enforcement of current laws in relation to simple possession and use of cannabis by adults. The draft law would prohibit the use of provincial police resources for this purpose, would require police to report in detail to the Minister of Justice any actual use of resources for this purpose and why it was necessary, and require the Minister to publish that report. The Bill also proposes that the Province would call upon the Federal Government to repeal the federal prohibition on cannabis, or give British Columbia an exemption, such that British Columbia is able to tax and regulate cannabis similar to the regulation of alcohol and tobacco. As well it proposes that British Columbia shall establish a Provincial Commission to study the means and requirements necessary for the province to establish a legal and regulated model for the production and use of cannabis by adults. Last, the Bill would make non-lawful possession and use of cannabis by minors an offence similar to possession and use of alcohol.
Initiative Advertising: Individuals or organizations who sponsor initiative advertising, other than the proponent and registered opponents, must register with the Chief Electoral Officer before they conduct or publish initiative advertising. Registration applications are available from Elections BC. Who May Sign the Petition: Registered voters as of Monday, November 19, 2012 may sign the initiative petition. Individuals may only sign the petition once, and must sign the petition sheet for the electoral district in which they are registered at the time of signing. Signed petitions are available for public inspection. For More Information: The initiative application and draft Bill are available for public inspection on the Elections BC website and at the Elections BC office at the address below.
