School district mulls changes to busing system BY JENN McGARRIGLE THE NEWS BULLETIN

Ancient Bible returned to family BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN

Worms had tunneled through the tattered and torn pages of an aging Bible discovered in a box of books donated to the Friends of Gabriola Library. Parts were marred with ink scrawls, a layer of phrases, symbols and names surrounding religious scriptures. It was in such poor condition it had no monetary value. Yet, to Ron Pentecost the book was a journey into his family’s past that he never expected to hold. “It is something I will certainly

treasure for the rest of my life,” he said. “I am quite ecstatic.” The book was discovered last year and has been rebound several times over the years, with some writings found in the pages dating back to the 1620s. The Bible was donated by Kit Szanto, who had received it from her aunt, and Szanto isn’t sure how it came into her family’s possession. Kristen Miller, a volunteer for the Friends of the Library, who had an interest in old books, took it to an appraiser in Victoria, but learned it wasn’t worth much. ◆ See ‘HEIRLOOM’ /6

Nanaimo school officials are looking to tune up or overhaul the district’s transportation services and wants parents to share their thoughts on the school bus system. The district hired a consulting firm to conduct a review of the bus transportation operations to determine if there are any efficiencies or changes to the current system the district should consider. “Our funding has been frozen for about 10 years, although our costs have gone up,” said Jamie Brennan, school board chairman. “It’s a drain on our budget. We have to see if there are any opportunities for efficiencies. We have to look at all parts of the situation.” The district currently provides busing service to about 1,836 students, out of a total enrolment of about 14,000 students. The review will look at walk limits, current configuration of routes, courtesy riders, user-pay systems, staff training, types of buses and fuel usage, how school schedules affect bus routes and the transportation assistance program. Brennan said the review may mean service reductions, as trustees want to ensure the district doesn’t keep routes that are no longer necessary, but it could also recommend service additions – for example, trustees may decide for safety reasons that bus service is vital in an area previously unserved. He said trustees would likely vote down any recommendation for a user-pay system, as the board does not want to negatively impact families already struggling to pay rent and put food on the table. ◆ See ‘PARENTS’ /6

Dix seeks cancer screening program BY JENN McGARRIGLE THE NEWS BULLETIN

Provincial NDP leader Adrian Dix is calling for a provincewide colorectal cancer screening program. Dix was in Nanaimo Thursday to meet with party members, business leaders and First Nations people and take a tour of Harmac mill. Also on the agenda was talking to the media about improving colorectal cancer rates on the Island. He said about 1,100 British Columbians die every year from this type of cancer, which disproportionately affects people between 50 and 74. The B.C. Cancer Agency expects the incidence of colorectal cancer on the Island to increase by 19 per cent by the end of the decade and mortality by 16 per cent. “The good news is we can significantly act to address

survival rates with early detection,” said Dix. “For 90 per cent of people, [early] detection means that this isn’t fatal. I’m proposing a provincewide program to enhance colorectal screening.” He urges all people ages 50-74 to get screened, adding that the test is inexpensive and could be done at home in a matter of minutes. Dix has been advocating for such a program for a number of years. His mother is one of the fortunate ones, whose colorectal cancer, diagnosed in 1998, was detected early enough that it was not fatal. He said the screening program, which the B.C. Cancer Agency could take responsibility for, is a particular focus because of the effectiveness and inexpensiveness of the tests. Dix estimates it could cost about $10 million based on

costs of the Ontario screening program, but it would save money in the long run by reducing the number of people who need extensive care. He hopes to get the program implemented as soon as possible, adding that he feels it is not a partisan issue. While his main topic of discussion for the Thursday meeting with reporters was the screening program, Dix also expressed disappointment with the Liberal government’s decision to cancel the fall sitting of the legislature. “The legislature has sat dramatically less under the Liberals than it did under the NDP and dramatically less now under Premier Clark than it did under Premier Campbell,” he said. “The legislature is the place our government gets held accountable in our democracy.” reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

UNITED WAY sets campaign goal of $700,000. BY CHRIS BUSH THE NEWS BULLETIN

About 300 people followed the scent of scrambled eggs and bacon into the Vancouver Island Conference Centre Friday for United Way’s 2012 Campaign kick off breakfast. The United Way Central and Northern Vancouver Island launched its annual fundraising campaign at the breakfast with the theme Change Starts Here. This year’s campaign goal is to raise $700,000 to fund 22 local organizations that help children, youth and seniors on central Vancouver Island. CTV’s Bruce Williams MCed the event, which featured

people helped by United Wayfunded organizations as guest speakers. Mark Willott told people about the challenges he faced dealing with severe depression and mental illness and how he was helped through those challenges by programs provided by the Columbian Centre Society. “They were there to give you a hand up, not a hand out,” he said. Willott is now a member of the Columbian Centre Society’s board of directors and attends Vancouver Island University. Ralph Nilson, VIU president, announced the university and Vancouver Island Health Authority now provide loaned representatives for staff to work exclusively on the campaign for a three-month period. The university and health authority are among the many organizations and businesses

that provide campaign volunteers or have employee campaign teams to raise the cash needed to keep programs and services United Way funds running through the year. Donations don’t always come as cash and cheques. Woodgrove Chrysler donated the use of a new Dodge Calibre to provide transportation for United Way staff and Mid-Island Co-op has again provided fuel for the car. Local businesses, labour organizations and employee campaigns stepped up to the stage with $133,800 in donations and pledges during the breakfast. Costco committed to raise $56,000 for this year’s campaign. To donate to the campaign or learn more about the United Way in Nanaimo, please call 250-729-7400 or go to www.uwcnvi.ca.

Thieves grab medals

MILITARY, CIVILIAN decorations donated to St. John Ambulance. BY CHRIS BUSH THE NEWS BULLETIN

St. John Ambulance members and police are hoping to recover military and civilian service medals stolen from Nanaimo brigade’s building. The medals, donated by Maj. Charles Whiskers, a long time member of St. John Ambulance, were displayed in a shadow box in the building, located on Labieux Raod and were likely stolen sometime in early September. Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said it appeared there was no sign of forced entry into the building and that the shadow box had been simply ripped off the wall. The medals commemorated Whisker’s military service with Canadian army and years of service with St. John Ambulance. Jack Patten, St. John Ambulance area commissioner, said he reported the theft to police Sept. 11, the day he noticed the medals were missing. Whiskers had no family locally,

Patten said, so he donated his medals for display at the Nanaimo St. John Ambulance branch and they have significant sentimental value to staff and volunteers. “He was a great supporter,” Patten said. “For many, many years he was there all the time and that’s why we had his medals on display. He was such a diligent, dedicated supporter.” The stolen medals include: Commander in the Order of the St. John Ambulance (white cross with a black ribbon), Military Long Service (red ribbon with gold medallion with “Major Whiskers” inscribed in the back), Order of the St. John Ambulance (black ribbon with silver star), Queen Elizabeth 50th Jubilee and Officer of the St. John Ambulance (four pointed silver star). The shadow box is made of dark wood and measured 46 centimetres by 38 cm. The shadow box also contained a picture of Whiskers in his Canadian Scottish Regiment mess kit. Anyone with information about the medal’s whereabouts or the theft is asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.nanaimocrimestoppers. com. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

New playground honours brothers lost in house fire BY JENN MCGARRIGLE THE NEWS BULLETIN

Seaview Elementary School students are getting a new playground next spring. Last February, the school’s parent advisory council launched a campaign to have a memorial playground built on the school site in honour of two boys killed in a house fire on Nanoose First Nation land in January. After just months of fundraising, the community came together to raise the $50,000 needed. “As of right now, we’re sitting at $45,000,” said Cherie Alyward, Seaview PAC chairwoman. “The Lantzville council will kick in the last $5,000. It’s overwhelming because my personal goal was to have it by October. I was told to raise that kind of money, it would be a three- to five-year process.” The new playground, called Angels at Work, So Angels Can Play Memorial Playground, is in honour of the brothers who died Jan. 25 in an accidental fire on the reserve. Alyward said the PAC expects to break ground next March so the fam-

The new playground replaces an aging, wooden structure at the school that is on the district’s top 10 priority list for replacement. “We’ve been told by the school district that we have to replace it,” said Alyward. “You can see the rust starting.” To pick the new structure, parents shortlisted the choices last spring to four designs, which were narrowed down to two by the boys’ parents. Then children voted on the winner. The favoured design features two gliders, b r i d g e s, c l i m b i n g features, slides and monkey bars and the structure will be blue, green and off-white, the colours of the boys’ favourite hockey team, the Vancouver Canucks. Parents can submit top priorities ◆ From /1 Donna Reimer, school district spokeswoman, said the ministry provides the district with $1.225 million for transportation services and the district spends about $1.696 million on these services. “But it’s not targeted,” she said. “We can spend more or we can spend less. The idea of the review is to take an overall look at the system. The community changes over time.” Cost of the review is $22,400. Brennan said the consulting firm, Management Partnership Services Inc., based out of Maryland, which provides student transportation and fleet management consulting

services, was picked because it is highly regarded and has worked elsewhere in B.C. in the past. Parents can submit their thoughts on the current bus system online at http://bit.ly/sd68BusReview until Oct. 1. The district will follow up by e-mail to ask people to choose priorities from the answers received and then a summary will be given to the consultant for consideration in the review. Once the school board receives the consultant’s report, there would be a consultation process with parents if any recommendations mean major changes to the current system. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Heirloom traced to Australia ◆ From /1 After carefully combing through the pages, she found one recurring name and a phrase scrawled on a page ‘Richard Pentecost his book 1742’. She decided to visit a genealogy site and track down the descendants of Richard Pentecost who might be interested in the Bible as a family heirloom. Ron Pentecost, who lives in Toowoomba, Australia, signed up on a genealogy website to research his family history, but hadn’t checked it in 12 months. Then by chance, he decided to log on in April and read the message posted by Miller. Richard Pentecost was his great, great, great grandfather. Miller said Friends of the Library decided to give him the book because it would have more meaning to him and they wanted to give it to someone who had ‘attachment’ to it. Pentecost didn’t know where Gabriola Island was, but discovered it was close to Vancouver, which he had scheduled a trip to in September to visit his son. On Tuesday, Pentecost received the Bible during a special event at Gabriola’s

It is difficult to put into words how I feel about getting this Bible.” The trip also led to Pentecost discovering relatives in the area. He said it is interesting to ponder

where the Bible may be in another 300 years. The Bible is in such frail condition Pentecost said he is considering donating it to a library or museum where he lives to help preserve it. He said it would have special meaning to his city because his great grandfather was a pioneer in the Queensland district. reporter3@nanaimobulletin.com

Greyhound Canada is losing millions on its B.C. operations because of rigid provincial rules that re q u i re m i n i m u m bus trips on inter-city routes regardless of passenger demand. She said the simulation lab will also put VIU’s nursing programs on par with other Island institutions – the University of Victoria, North Island College and Camosun College already

have similar labs. Joanne Maclaren, Vancouver Island Health Authority’s manager of professional practice, said the lab is a great opportunity for students to take theory learned and practise it in a safe environment, as well as gain exposure to things they might not encounter regularly in a hospital setting. The $350,000 is Sharman’s latest donation to the nursing department – in 2009 he donated $1 million to support annual scholarships for fourth year nursing students. “I think there’s no better profession to support than nursing,” he said in a press release. “After all, everyone needs a nurse, from the minute they’re born, to the minute they die. “If I can help ensure Vancouver Island has some of the best trained nurses by supporting this lab, then I think that’s an excellent investment.”

Vancouver Island University is getting a state-of-theart nursing simulation lab to boost the competitiveness of the nursing program and better prepare students for work in the field. The lab, which officials hope to have ready by next September, was made possible by two major donations – Windsor Plywood gave $50,000 and local philanthropist Sidney Sharman donated $350,000 last week. The simulation lab, to go in an underused classroom, will include three rooms outfitted like hospital rooms, including equipment, a bed and a ‘patient’, as well as a debriefing room. The ‘patient’ is a simulation doll worth about $70,000 – a lifelike mannequin that can replicate many of the common symptoms and scenarios nurses may encounter in a clinical setting. “They can cough, sneeze, spit up, breathe, their hearts thump, they can become feverish, they can become cold and clammy,” said Carol Stuart, dean of health and human services. The university already has several of the dolls, but the department couldn’t use them to full effectiveness because there is no secure space for them. With the $400,000, the department can buy another doll, bringing the total to five for students to practise on. All three nursing programs – health-care assistant, practical nursing and bachelor of nursing – will have access to the simulation lab. Stuart said the lab is an

similar losses. He has written to Transportation Minister Mary Polak asking the B.C. government to follow the lead of other provinces and deregulate bus service so it can be kept alive. Polak said she is aware that B.C. service is at risk, and ministry staff are working on options. “It’s obvious from what they’ re saying that they need to make adjustments, or they’re going to have to pull out of the whole thing,” Polak said.

Empty house not democracyy When is a democracy not a democracy? When the democratically elected representatives don’t sit, debate, and vote on issues before the government. Welcome to British Columbia, where we are ruled by Liberal spin-doctors and their re-election machine. News that the Liberals cancelled the fall sitting of the legislature is undoubtedly predicated by spin-doctor rationale that MLAs are tougher to be held accountable for their actions when not required to answer questions about issues. Newly-minted Finance Minister Mike de Jong’s first order of business was to break the news that natural gas revenues in the province were down and, as a result, the province has undertaken austerity measures akin to early 1980s. Isn’t that, and the measures the government is going to undertake to try and balance the books, worthy of discussion in the legislature? Apparently not. Instead, all the forces of government will focus on preparing a budget that the Liberals can present next spring, just prior to the election, telling us that all is well with the world because they are at the helm. Even though the province is now blustering about on the Northern Gateway Pipeline project, shouldn’t its position be debated in the legislature? Apparently not. This is the same Liberal government that rushed through a spate of legislation in the spring sitting so it could get the summer break started on time. When those who are looking for your vote come knocking on your door next spring, just ask them if they are committed to spring and fall sittings of the legislature every year. Those who cannot commit are not worthy of democracy’s highest honour – your vote. The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, 201 Selby St., Nanaimo, B.C. V9R 2R2. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org

Right, sugar – seven cups. Seven. The jam almost boiled over, which would have been more than a mess in my beautiful, brilliantly white kitchen, but I managed to pull it all off. The cooked jam went into jars, then processed again in the water. When I use a new recipe, I always follow it to the letter and if successful, I then modify it to my own tastes. Next time I can anything, I’ll research low-sugar pectins or canning without sugar. For now, though, I’m enjoying my jam. I hope the people who receive a jar for Christmas do, too. The experience helped me connect with my food, underlining the fact that it’s not something that just comes from a store. Although it was rewarding, canning is a labour-intensive process, even if it is relatively simple. I made eight jars of jam. I couldn’t imagine the work involved in preserving an entire winter’s worth of fruit and vegetables. This process also helped me understand what led people away from homemade food – grabbing what was needed from the local grocer seemed easier in the short term than days in the kitchen process enough food for an entire family. Perhaps next year, I’ll add whole fruit preserves to my jam making. Creating all my own food is a far-off goal and I’m happy to make one or two changes a year to work toward it. It’s not an all-or-nothing choice – one or two changes will make a big difference for health. editor@nanaimobulletin.com

Focus should be on education

To the Editor, Re: Parents angry over logo cost, Sept. 18. The trustees of School District 68 need to get reacquainted with their operational mandate, which is to improve student achievement by engaging their communities in building and maintaining a school system that reflects local priorities, values and expectations. If the trustees believe that even a fraction of our students will benefit, in any way, from any form of rebranding, logo design or otherwise, then contracting the appropriate professionals at current market rates is a reasonable use of education funds. I, along with countless other parents, cannot foresee any benefit, direct or indirect, to students, ergo I can only interpret the school board’s actions as a form of political posturing. District spokeswoman Donna Reimer reported that a revision of the district’s graphic identity is timely in light of the new strategic plan, which is “in the developmental stage.” Over the years, many excellent initiatives within these strategic plans never made it out of the developmental stage, ironically, owing to lack of funding. This undertaking of corporate rebranding amounts to putting the cart before the horse. The district wants stakeholders to perceive it is focused on improving student learning and optimizing academic outcomes. But, rather than acting according to this mandate and letting those actions speak for themselves in the eyes of stakeholders, the district has opted to get a shiny new coat of paint in the hope that teachers, parents, and other stakeholders may be sufficiently dazzled by this new image so as to overlook the academic shortcomings within the classrooms themselves. Proper management of human resources, minimi-

zation of salary-heavy, highlevel administrative positions, and accountability for class size and composition all constitute moving forward in the best interests of students throughout the district. A new graphic identity does not. Parents may be powerless to change the school board’s most current wasteful undertaking, but do not forget it come the next election. Research trustees, get informed as to who voted for what, when, and why, and then let the ballot speak on voting day. Sadly, we have no one to blame for this logo debacle but ourselves, as each of the trustees who voted for this senseless waste of resources was elected to their position by parents. Tiffany Nelson Nanaimo

OK for logo design a “foolish” decision To the Editor, Re: Parents angry over logo cost, Sept. 18. With all the cuts to education, trustees at the Nanaimo school district are going to dip into that bottomless bank known as the parent or taxpayer and foolishly spend $24,000 on designing a new school district logo. How about hiring someone to pick up a paint brush and paint the words Nanaimo-Ladysmith Public Schools on all school district vehicles? I’m sure there is a local sign painter that can handle the job in a professional and quality manner. And board chairman Jamie Brennan is right about people looking for a

change in the district – we would really like to have elected officials stop spending money that is not their’s to spend on pet peeve projects. Another idea that would prove to our kids that education is a priority and they are the bright minds of the future is to have a contest for graphic arts students at Vancouver Island University who want to believe that they will be rewarded with opportunities in the future. The school district could pick the best logo and contribute $2,000-$5,000 toward the winner’s college education. What better way to show that the school district, as district spokeswoman Donna Reimer says, is working to focus the entire district on improving student learning and success for all students. If the school district spends $24,233 on a simple logo, parents will definitely not be pleased that trustees hastily made the decision without much thought process. How much more money will it cost us to have either the logo painted on, or decals attached to, all school district vehicles, not to mention new letterheads, business cards, etc.? The taxpayers are complete fools if they believe the $24,233 will be the final bill. Doug Wristen Nanaimo

Marketing not a job for school trustees To the Editor, Re: Parents angry over logo cost, Sept. 18. Does the Nanaimo school district seriously need a new logo? Is it now a business marketing firm trying to attract new customers? I know my business could not afford that kind of cost. Speaking of which, it will cost much more than $24,000 to introduce the logo. New stationary, new signs and

employee downtime trying to plan all this out will add up. And does the new name clarify that it is a school district more than the wording presently used? It’s always easier to spend other people’s money and this is not a good way to spend more taxpayers’ dollars, especially in light of all the cutbacks. Mel Huggins Nanaimo

War on drugs fuels criminal activities To the Editor, Re: Marijuana tax fiasco no joke, Opinion, Sept. 18. Not only should medical marijuana be made available to patients in need, but adult recreational use should be regulated as well. Drug policies modeled after alcohol prohibition have given rise to a youthoriented black market. Illegal drug dealers don’t ID for age, but they do recruit minors immune to adult sentences. So much for protecting the children. Throwing more money at the problem is no solution. Attempts to limit the supply of illegal drugs while demand remains constant only increase the profitability of drug trafficking. For addictive drugs like heroin, a spike in street prices leads desperate addicts to increase criminal activity to feed desperate habits. The drug war doesn’t fight crime, it fuels crime. Taxing and regulating marijuana, the most popular illicit drug, is a cost-effective alternative to a never-ending drug war. As long as marijuana distribution is controlled by organized crime, consumers will continue to come into contact with hard drugs like methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin. This ‘gateway’ is a direct result of marijuana prohibition. Robert Sharpe Common Sense for Drug Policy Washington, D.C.

The changes occur throughout the early, middle and late stages of the disease, and result in feelings

he Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock team’s two guest riders this year both have deep connections to the cause. Bob McDonald has helped train riders for the past four years. Matt Webb is a childhood cancer survivor who has been a junior team member for 15 years. Both have found themselves on an emotional and physical journey in the fight against pediatric cancer.

Bob McDonald

Edward Hill/Black Press

Having helped train Tour de Rock riders since 2008, McDonald knows how challenging the 1,000-plus kilometre cycle down the length of Vancouver Island can be. But, he said, it’s nothing compared to what some kids go through every day of their lives. McDonald’s motivation to help raise funds for pediatric cancer research comes from close to home. His granddaughter, Lochlyn, was born with Costello syndrome, a genetic disorder that delays growth. Having the syndrome makes five-year-old Lochlyn more susceptible to cancerous tumours. “She was in the hospital for the first 98 days of her life and we weren’t sure she was going to make it,” the 67-year-old Sidney resident said. “She’s now just turned five ... and so far, so good. She’s doing really well.” McDonald, known as Bobfather to

And for the past four years, the father-son team has worked with the riders, preparing them for the two-week trek. Being asked to ride with this year’s team was just a way for McDonald to stay involved and contribute more to the cause, he said. “It’s just so exciting,” he said.

Matt Webb Webb’s memories of his childhood cancer come in flashes. Three months before his fourth birthday he was diagnosed with Burkitt’s lymphoma. For two years he was in and out of B.C.

Children’s Hospital in Vancouver in a cycle of chemotherapy and recovery. The Easter Seals House was his home away from home, but he’s thankful his memories of the time are dim. “It’s a half-dozen single frame images in my mind. Nothing more,” said Webb, 20, now 15 years cancer free. “That in itself is a blessing.” Indeed, the gruelling regime of chemotherapy was almost fatal. By chance, his doctors realized the chemicals had eaten a hole in his large intestine. That outcome helped doctors establish new protocols for treating kids with chemotherapy. “They had to stop the treatment early. It would have killed me for sure, even if the cancer didn’t.” Born and raised in Saanich, and in the same house his great-great grandfather built 110 years ago, Webb is one of the few people to directly experience both sides of Tour de Rock as a childhood survivor and junior team member. When Tour de Rock offered the invitation last Christmas, he eagerly jumped onboard. As a 15-year junior rider – a child who has cancer or cancer in remission – Webb has lived Tour de Rock as long as he can remember. Webb said he’s looking forward to experiencing Tour de Rock in the 27 stops that dot the Island. “I’m used to the overwhelming response in Victoria each year,” he said. “But up Island, (riders) are blown away. Little communities give so much, some give more than bigger communities. I’ve heard so much about it I’m eager to see it myself.”

The hallways in schools may be quiet during teacher professional development days in October, but the Nanaimo Museum will be bustling with activity. The museum is offering two new drop-in workshops for children and their families on Oct. 1 and Oct. 19 from 1-4 p.m. The first workshop includes hands-on activities with a train theme and the second is inspired by the museum’s feature exhibit on fabric art. The new workshops build on the success of similar events during spring break. “More families visit the museum on professional development days,” said Aimee Greenaway, program and volunteer coordinator. “The workshops have fun activities

that will keep children engaged with the added bonus of teaching them about their community.” The activities are designed for children ages five-12 years. Families can participate in the activities on an ongoing basis so pre-registration is not necessary. Caregivers must be present to supervise children at all times. The Coal Trains workshop on, Oct. 1 provides the unique opportunity for children to have an upclose look at the steam locomotive in Piper Park. Activities such as making engineer hats will take place inside the museum’s gallery, just a two-minute walk away from the park. The Fabric Art for Kids workshop on Oct. 19 features no-sew

DEATHS

DEATHS

en passed away peacefully September 14 after a long and happy life of 89 years. He has gone to join his youngest daughter, Susan (Kevin), and his grandson, Garrett (Angela) who both tragically predeceased him this past year. His parents, John and Mary Ellen Mckenzie, proud residents of Nanaimo’s South End, also predeceased him and as well as brother, John (Elinor) and sister, Eleanor (Andy). He leaves behind to miss him so very much, his sister, Edith (Ted); his loving wife of 64 years, Betty, and their children: Karen, Ken (Pam) and Leah as well as grandchildren: Dawn, Talia, Ryan, Shaun, Anna, Alison and Jordy. He also had the good fortune to enjoy seven great grandchildren: Kyle, Hayley, Jeremy, Karly, Jack, Oliver and Levi. Ken was born in Nanaimo, July 26, 1923 and lived his entire life in Nanaimo and Qualicum, except when he proudly served in the Royal Canadian Navy and saw years of active duty in the North Atlantic on a Corvette convoy escort. After the war he found his life long love, Betty, and they were married in 1948. They began their family with Ken working at the Nanaimo Courthouse, where he eventually became Nanaimo’s Court Registrar and enjoyed many years in that position prior to moving on to work at a private law ďŹ rm. Ken lived with a level of integrity difďŹ cult to match. Ken retired in the 1970’s to work on the waterfront cabin in Qualicum that would eventually become his and Betty’s permanent home that they loved for many years. All of their children and grandchildren spent sunny days swimming and enjoying many happy times at “The The Beach Beach.â€? During the past several years Ken enjoyed renewing past friendships and creating new ones at Nanaimo Senior’s Village. After a recent fall, Ken became in need of professional care and in late July moved into Woodgrove Manor where he spent the last weeks of his life on Earth. The family would like to thank Dr. Vaughan, Ken’s (and Betty’s) physician for many years, who took such special care with all of his health needs. We would also like to thank Connie and Denise and the rest of the caring staff at Woodgrove Manor for helping to make Ken’s last days as comfortable and peaceful as possible. There will be no service by request.

M’s soccer tries again for victories Vancouver Island University’s soccer teams weren’t able to come up with wins in their home openers, but there are fresh opportunities this coming weekend. VIU’s men’s and women’s teams play the UBC-Okanagan Heat today (Sept. 22) and the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack tomorrow at Mariner Field. The Mariners teams will be looking to make good after the previous weekend’s so-so results. The men tied Kwantlen 0-0 in an uneven effort last Saturday, then played better in a 1-1 tie against the Douglas Royals the next day. Stephen Ewashko gave the M’s a 1-0 lead over the Royals in the first half, but the second half saw the visitors tie it up and the home team go down a man to a red card. Even down to 10 men, the M’s created a good scoring chance late in the game, said coach Bill Merriman. “We still attacked, we still played as if we had the 11 men,” he said. “We didn’t drop off and get into a shell which is easy to do against a team like Douglas.” He said both keepers played well in Sunday’s tie, but said his players need to do a better job of goal scoring against this

weekend’s opponents. “I know we’re going to be able to create chances, it’s a matter of putting the ball in the net,” he said. The M’s women, meanwhile, had a tougher go of things last weekend, losing 4-0 to Kwantlen on Saturday and then getting edged 2-1 in Sunday’s game

against Douglas. Mariners women’s coach Anup Kang said his team didn’t seem to have its legs in Saturday’s game, but was much better the next day. Emma Johansson scored for VIU in that contest. “If we continue to play like we did on Sunday we’ll

be fine,” said Kang in a press release. “Our shape was good and we didn’t give them anything.” GAME ON … The women face the Heat today at 1 p.m. with the men’s game at 3 p.m. Tomorrow’s games versus the WolfPack go at noon and 2 p.m. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

The North Island Silvertips have a fresh sheet of ice, and fresh legs capable of skating a lot of lengths up and down the ice. Nanaimo’s B.C. Major Midget League hockey team opens the 2012-13 season this Saturday (Sept. 22) and Sunday with road games against the Kootenay Ice. The Silvertips narrowly missed the playoffs last season, but are expected to be in the hunt this year. “It’s good to have a fresh new start,” said Dayton Boutilier, team captain. “Hopefully we’re all going to get the legs going, get a few points and just keep the confidence, the flow going.” The ’Tips won’t be the biggest or most physical team in the BCMML, but they have other attributes that they can use to their advantage. “We’re teaching the kids [about] being energetic and get on

the right side of the momentum shifts,” said Jason Dubyna, the team’s new coach. “That’s part of what we have to do to be successful.” The Silvertips have a lot of good puckhandlers, both forwards and defencemen. “We can push the play,” said the coach. “We don’t have to wait for our chances, we can force and make chances happen.” Re t u r n e e s C u rtis McCarrick, Nick G o m e r i c h , D av i d Osbor ne and Liam Shaw will be some of the go-to guys on o f f e n c e. B o u t i l i e r and Kyle MacDonald anchor the defence and the goaltenders this year are Liam Giroux and Liam Young. E ve r y ye a r t h e BCMML features standouts who will go on to major junior, junior A and junior B. “They’re at an age where they still have opportunities to reach the highest levels of hockey,” Dubyna said. “So that inspiration is there and that’s the exciting part.” The team’s home openers will be Sept. 29-30 at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. sports@nanaimobulletin.com
