Colon Care
Estimates vary that 50 to 80 percent of immune system function relies upon a healthy intestinal tract, specifically the colon. The colon is also responsible for nutrient and vitamin absorption, the synthesis of vitamins, and critical water retention and electrolyte balance. The human digestive tract is ill-equipped to evolve and cope with the drastic changes in the processed food we eat that include additives, hormones, and environmental toxins that have emerged in the past century. The Problem is Superficial Cleanse targets toxins and accumulated waste material within the colon that sap energy and compromise immune response, and removes them.
Hepatic Help “Throw your Liver a Lifeline:
The liver is the most important internal organ dedicated to detoxification. The liver filters in excess of 2,000 litres of blood on a daily basis. This highly specialized “chemical treatment plant” cannot be replaced on a routine basis, as we do with filters in engines and motors that we rely upon. The ingredients inThe Problem is Superficial Cleanse facilitate the elimination of toxins within the liver to improve its role in bile production, vitamin and mineral storage, and the conversion of glucose to glycogen for short-term energy storage. In summary, a healthy, well-functioning liver is critical for the well-being of all organ systems.

This story is as much about the delights of small-town living as it is about wine. And it’s a cautionary tale in case we need a reminder about the need not become wine snobs. It started on a beautiful Saturday when I dropped into a local street festival to take photos and show my support for the cause. As I wandered around I nearly passed by a man whose smile triggered something in my brain. “You didn’t recognize me?” grinned Marcel, embracing me in his trademark bear hug. Marcel Leal-Valias was wearing a hat and sunglasses, and I hadn’t seen him since last year. He spends most of his time in Calgary, where his expertise in oilfield safety practices is in great demand. As we chatted to catch up, Marcel told me about a wine he had made, one that won him both provincial and national recognition in amateur winemaking competitions. Tannat, he said. Tannat? Tannat grapes are historically grown in the southwest of France, but they have become increasingly popular in Argentina, Brazil, Peru and Italy. In Uruguay, of all places, Tannat has become the national grape. The grape makes a very tannic, dark and full-bodied wine and it has typically been used as a blending variety. “Don’t worry,” Marcel said before we parted
ways, “I have a bottle for you.” An hour later I was at Baillie-Grohman Winery, talking to owner Bob Johnson. He began to rave about a bottle of wine he had with friends the night before. He was referring to Marcel’s Tannat. “It’s really good,” Bob said. Not many days later we were invited to dinner with friends who live half the year in Britain and the other, summer half, in the Creston Valley. Another couple that are planning their retirement to Creston from Calgary joined us. Host Gerry brought out a bottle of wine that “you just have to try.” Sure enough, it was Marcel’s Tannat. To our amusement, the cork proved very difficult to extract, crumbling at Gerry’s efforts to remove it. Eventually he pushed the cork in, then strained the contents to remove bits of cork. (Later, to our astonishment, he performed a parlour trick, using a cloth napkin to remove the cork from the bottle.) The Tannat was as good as its now growing reputation had led us to believe. It is a huge wine—lots of tannins, very full-bodied, amazing blackberry notes and extremely dark in colour. I was immediately reminded of Amarone, the Italian wine from the Veneto region made from grapes that have been air-dried for several weeks to evaporate some of the water content and intensify the flavours. We all
agreed it was an amazing wine, one that we would happily pay $40 for if it was available on a store shelf. A few more days passed before we attended an outdoor festival in Wynndel and who did we come across but Marcel. “Let me know when you are ready to leave,” he said. “We’ll go to my house and get your bottle of Tannat.” As we prepared for our departure, Marcel came up with a better plan. He rounded up the friends we had that earlier dinner with, ordered us all to purchase lunches to go and the six of us joined him on his deck. Out came a bottle of Tannat and another of Zinfandel, which he had also made. Our motley crew ate our lunch, sipped the wines and laughed away a couple of glorious hours, all the while enjoying a jaw-dropping view that encompasses Duck and Kootenay Lakes. We left, one of the few remaining bottles of Marcel’s Tannat in hand, determined to share it with our son, also a wine lover, and daughter-in-law. A week later we did just that and the amazing tale of Marcel’s Tannat came to an end. I always describe myself as a wine enthusiast, by no means an expert. And I’m certainly not a wine snob. I’m as happy to try a friend’s home-made cherry wine as I am a $200 bottle of Bordeaux. Marcel’s Tannat was another in a lengthy list of happy experiences that serve to reinforce that attitude.

A reminder to not feed local deer
Photo Submitted
While there is no denying that deer are cute, it is against the city’s Deer Feeding Prohibition Bylaw to set out food for them. Submitted
Residents of and visitors to the City of Cranbrook are reminded that intentional feeding of deer, contravenes the City’s Deer Feeding Prohibition Bylaw, which came into effect in October 2010. The bylaw clearly states no one is to provide deer with food by intentionally leaving
food, food waste or other attractive edible material for the sole purpose of feeding deer. For example, leaving out a bale of hay, a bag of apples or other compostable food scraps on a residential lot or property where these items are not consistently being grown or produced for human consumption would be seen as an infraction to the bylaw. To be clear, farm operations, home fruit and vegetable gardens intended for human consumption or ornamental plants and flowers will not be included as material intended for the sole purpose of feeding deer under the deer feeding bylaw. Anyone found violating the Deer Feeding Prohibition Bylaw will be committing an offense and can be fined on an escalating fine schedule; $100 for the first offense, $200 for the second, $500 for the third. Each day a violation occurs constitutes a new

Juvenile Diabetes fighting for a cure
Here’s how your gift will make a difference A person living with type 1 diabetes requires approximately 1,463 needles and 2,190 finger pokes a year to test their blood sugar levels. Your gift can help us achieve our goal through the support of JDRF’s various research projects. Eliminating diabetes would mean no more finger pokes or needles for people living with type 1 diabetes around the world. $10,000 Artificial Pancreas Project. By helping to regulate blood sugar levels, an artificial pancreas could save a child’s life by reducing the risk of nighttime low blood sugar reactions and provide parents with peace of mind, enabling them to sleep through the night without worry. $5,000 Immune Therapies Research. JDRF scientists have already produced a nanovaccine for the prevention and cure of type 1 diabetes in mice. Your gift could help JDRF move this discovery forward to benefit humans. $2,500 Accelerate the Cure for Diabetes. The JDRF Canadian Clinical Trial Network (CCTN) is a consortium of leading Canadian doctors and researchers working to conduct clinical trials for promising diabetes treatments and technologies, with the goal of accelerating the development of a cure for diabetes and its complications. $1,000 Beta Cell Therapies Research. Did you know that the first islet transplant was conducted in Canada? Help JDRF continue to refine the process of islet transplants which has helped 146 patients in Canada temporarily restore insulin production in their body. $500 Improve Diabetes Care. In addition to conducting clinical trials, the CCTN is training clinicians to provide the best care to patients by giving them access to the latest available treatments and procedures. $250 Diabetes Innovation. Every year, JDRF provides “Innovative Grants” to scientists

Functional Exercises for a Functional Body
Gyms are filled with exercise equipment, most of which is designed to isolate a muscle or a muscle group. The problem with this lies in the fact that by isolating muscles, you never get the entire muscle chain to work. In other words, most machines work exclusively on prime movers (big muscles), completely disregarding the stabilizers (postural muscles). Some people build huge muscles through the exclusive use of Aurélie machines, but sometimes little Wiedemann movements as simple as bending over the sink to brush their teeth, can trigger a lot of pain. This is because they have never worked on their stabilizers. Having worked out on machines under the assumption that they were getting stronger and healthier, they didn’t realize they were creating muscle imbalance through the overworked prime movers as compared to the stabilizers they remained unaware of. Sitting or laying on a machine as well as leg presses and above all, the use of Smith machines assist the users by preventing them from stabilizing on their own. The only exception to this rule are cable machines, as the body isn’t supported in any way while using them. Free-weight and body weight exercises such as squats, lunges, push-ups, pull-ups, bend over rows, planks etc... all integrate stabilizers as well as prime movers. Although most people mistakenly think it is “safer” to begin working out with machines, if the exercise is easy enough to be performed safely it is totally possible to start someone on free weights, stability ball exercises and/or body weight exercises. It might feel a little weird at the beginning since the body isn’t supported but it’s better to start someone off with functional exercises than to begin by creating muscle imbalances in a body that isn’t balanced to start off with. Our postural muscles are just as important as our prime movers and we need to train our body as a whole in order to move, jump, run, and play sports optimally. For more information on functional workouts contact me at sattvatraining@gmail.com or 250-464-4046 to book your free consultation. I look forward to hearing from you.

Waiving fees for research
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Curves continues to work to raise awareness in women about the lifesaving importance of risk management, early detection and treatment. From Oct. 1 - 14th Cranbrook Curves is waiving the joining fee for new members who show proof of a mammogram within the past year or make a $25 donation to breast cancer research. Since only about 5-10 percent of breast cancers are hereditary, prevention can play a key role in a woman’s risk management strategy. The Cancer Society recommends making lifestyle choices such as eating right, getting regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight to help a woman significantly reduce her risk of developing breast cancer. “Curves mission has always been to strengthen women,” according to the staff of Cranbrook Curves. “Typically, women are caregivers, but when it comes to breast cancer, women need to understand how important it is to take care of themselves. Scheduling an annual doctor visit, eating a nutritious diet and making time for regular exercise are all things that a woman can do to stay strong and help reduce her chances of developing this devastating disease.” About Curves Curves works every major muscle group with a complete 30-minute workout that combines strength training and sustained cardiovascular activity through safe and effective hydraulic resistance. Curves also works to help women lose weight, gain muscle strength and aerobic capacity, and raise metabolism with its groundbreaking, scientifically proven method that ends the need for perpetual dieting. Founders Gary and Diane Heavin are considered the innovators of the express fitness phenomenon that has made exercise available to millions of women globally, many of whom are in the gym for the first time. With thousands of locations worldwide, Curves is the world’s largest fitness franchise. For more information, please phone 250-417-2626 or visit us at www.curvescranbrook.com or check out the Facebook page.

A few weeks ago we gave Kirby a Stem Cell treatment. This was mainly meant for an arthritic joint in his leg. Now, three weeks later not only is his leg better but we are having to reduce his insulin dose. Kirby is a diabetic and had been on the same twice daily dose for over a year. Now, we are giving half the dose we were and he is more active, sleeps all night long without a 3 am "bathroom" call and even his cataracts have become less pronounced. This certainly was not an expected outcome, but it sure is welcome. Stem Cell treatments theoretically can treat any number of conditions, but the FDA has only approved arthritis treatments a labels indication. I see Kirby everyday, but I would think he is less grey too. Offered at Eureka Hospital.

Bring the kids down for Sport Day!
With a brand new skating season upon us, the Cranbrook Skating Club is pleased to participate in this year’s “Sport Day” by opening up their CanSkate program on Thursday, Sept 27th to all children interested in learning to skate. The theme of the session is “All it takes is a pair of skates” and will take place at the Memorial Arena from 3:45 – 4:30 pm. Note that helmets are mandatory. CanSkate is Canada’s only certified learn to skate program and is designed for beginners of all ages and taught by NCCP certified professional coaches. CanSkate places emphasis on teaching children how to skate one step at a time. Lessons are taught in a group format and children are able to progress at their own rate and actively engage in sessions where coaches use teaching aids, visuals, music and a wide variety of activities that creates not only a fun environment but also one that promotes skill development. The focus is on fun, participation and basic skill development. Participants earn badges as skills are mastered. Once a skater has progressed past basic skill development, there are many options to continue their participation with Skate Canada Programs including CanPowerSkate, STARSkate and CompetitiveSkate. These programs cater to the unique interests and goals of the participants.

A short economics lesson on the virtues of buying local The start of a new school year is the perfect occasion to give your children a short lesson that will be a good investment in the local economy. Make the most of the back to school shopping blitz to raise your children’s awareness of the many benets of shopping locally. There’s only one condition for turning this intensive training into a resounding success: you just have to buy all school supplies and clothing items from businesses near you. When shopping with your children at local stores for stationery, books, school bags, clothes, shoes, sporting equipment, and electronics, mention to your kids that when local people frequent these stores they are helping to create jobs and incomes for others in their town. Bring to your children’s attention the fact that if these businesses remain protable, one day they might be the source of a summer job or even, at a later date, a fulltime job that will allow them to stay in the town they grew up in.If your children have busy schedules, they’ll appreciate that shopping close to home will save lots of •Lumber•Tools•Fixtures•Finishing products•Mouldings travelling time. The 2012 Optima comes in a variety Stylish and tough enough for driving anywhere you need to go of flavours for the discerning driver

While looking similar to the Tribeca, the Outback combines the toughness of a sport utility vehicle with the luxury of a sedan.
European styling, a choice of hybrid and a powerful entry-level 200-horsepower engine make the 2012 Optima the smart choice for efficiency-minded drivers.
Overall: Splitting off the Legacy wagons into the Outback line has a lot of benefits, including less confusion and all-wheel-drive, all the time. Drivetrain: A range of fourand six-cylinder engines with power levels from 170-256 horsepower; six-speed manual transmission on base cars. On the outside, the Outback seems to have more in common with its larger Tribecasport-ute sibling than the Legacy sedan upon which it is based. The connection was more obvious when there was such a thing as a Legacy wagon, but since all wagons moved to the Outback camp, there’s much more clarity in the purpose and, dare we say, less confusion in the ordering process than before. Of course all Outbacks, which have an elegant rough-andtumble look to them, are all-wheel-drive and possess a quasi-off-road-y hiked-up stance. Base models come
Overall: One of the bestlooking sedans in the world, regardless of price, gets new standard equipment and minor visual changes for 2012. Drivetrain: All four-cylinders in regular, turbocharged and hybrid flavour. It’s hard to be a standout in a vehicle line as attractive as Kia’s, but the Optima’s chiseled European lines are hard to ignore. The whole line looks even better thanks to standard front fog lights and new LED taillights on midline models. Thankfully, the sporty driving experience keeps up with head designer Peter Schreyer’s promises. The Optima shares the related Hyundai Sonata’s range of powerful four-cylinder engines: the entry-level is a 2.4-litre unit that produces a very healthy 200 horsepower, while an optional turbocharged 274-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder
with the usual 170-horsepower 2.5-litre horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine. Here, two banks of pistons are positioned at 180 degrees from each other rather than the standard inline and upright design. The result is a shorter engine with a mass that’s positioned closer to the road, lowering the Outback’s - and all other Subaru’s really - center of gravity. Transmission choices consist of a six-speed manual or optional continuously variable unit (CVT) with column-mounted paddle controls that realistically mimic the gear changes in a regular automatic. Available is a 3.6-litre six-cylinder powerplant - also a “boxer” design - that was originally created for the Tribeca. With this choice there’s 256 horsepower and 247 poundfeet of torque on tap. In this instance, the only transmission available is a five-speed automatic. For off-road ad-
venturing, ground clearance is a decent 22 centimetres, which beats out many “traditional” sport utility vehicles that pride themselves on ruggedness. All Outbacks are well equipped and come with a unique roof-rail system where the crossbars fold parallel to the rails when not in use, reducing wind noise and likely increasing fuel economy. There’s also an electronic parking brake that holds the vehicle in place on an incline until the accelerator pedal is pushed. Limited editions add dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery plus the availability of a voice-activated navigation system and rear-view camera.
engine will sate your desire for speed. There’s also a gasoline-electric version of the 2.4 that produces a net 206 horsepower. As you might expect, the hybrid is the most fuel efficient (5.6 l/100 km city and 4.9 highway) but even the base engine produces a respectable 8.7 l/100 km in the city and 5.7 on the highway. Most interesting is that the hybrid system uses never-beforeemployed lithium-polymer batteries that are lightweight and can actually be formed into shapes. The Hybrid can travel at speeds up to 100 km-h without the gas engine assisting. The next best in that department, aside from the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, is the Ford Fusion Hybrid. Kia’s reputation was built on value, and the Optima is no different. Very well equipped for the class with standard air conditioning, power ev-
erything, a cooled glovebox, tilt and telescoping steering wheel and keyless entry. New features include an Infinity audio system with UVO hands-free entertainment and communication system and heated exterior mirrors. Once you move up to mid-range EX or top-range turbo-only SX models, features such as front and rear heated seats, leather upholstery, back-up camera, a premium Infinity sound system and a navigation system are available as options. For buyers with a sporting intent, the SX comes with 18-inch wheels, bigger front brakes, sportier suspension, bright high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlights, LED taillights, a rear spoiler, side sills and unique bumper design. Throw in a five-year/160,000-kilometre warranty and customers should be beating a path to their local Kia dealer.
