Chili cook-off nets more dollars for playground

Eight-year-old Rhett Bramfield, a Grade 3 student at Rimbey Elementary School checks out the huge pot of chili from the school that was brought to the chili cook-off Sept. 14. The school’s chili turned out to be the voters’ choice as the best chili at the cook-off. Money raised at the chili cook-off will go towards a new school playground. Treena Mielke Photo

By Treena Mielke The perfect blend of seasoning and spices mixed with a healthy dose of strong school spirit has paid off in a big way for Rimbey Elementary School. The school won the Sept. 14 chili cook-off at Pas Ka Poo Park and the fundraiser also netted more than $1,600 for a new playground. Winning the cook-off, in which 14 people participated, was wonderful, said principal Jodi Bramfield. “It was a surprise, but we have such a wonderful school spirit and that helped,” she said. School staff begin cooking the big pot of chili the morning of the day of the cook-off. “Everyone brings some ingredient. The whole staff contributes,”

Bramfield said. The school principal remained tight lipped about what, if any, secret ingredient is used to make the chili award winning. “My lips are sealed,” she said. The chili cook-off is one of several fundraisers held in the last few years to raise money for the playground and about $25,000 is still needed. The present playground, which contains monkey bars, swings, climbing platforms and a slide, was built several years ago and pressure treated wood was used, which could expose students to harmful chemicals. Last year the school raised close to $14,000 for the playground through a comedy night featuring two standup comedians.

Upgrades and renos ongoing at Rimbey’s Pas Ka Poo Park By Treena Mielke Thanks to a donation from Ponoka County, upgrades at Pas Ka Poo Park and Smithson’s International Truck Museum are now underway. Park administrator Cheryl Jones said the county donated $50,000 to the park to help with upkeep.

“We are putting new lighting in the truck museum with the use of energy efficient lights,” she said. “The eight-foot fluorescent lights are no longer suitable.” New wheelchair accessible sidewalks are also slated to be installed either this fall or in the spring. Continued on Page 8

Emergency personnel transported an injured man to Rimbey Hospital after he reported an ATV accident which claimed the life of his wife. APN Photo

ATV rollover claims life By Treena Mielke An ATV rollover occurring on the afternoon of September 16 has claimed the life of a 42-year-old Rimbey woman. Sgt. Mark Groves said the incident, which occurred near Open Creek Dam located west of Rimbey, is being investigated by an RCMP collision analyst. No charges have been laid. The woman, who was a passenger on the ATV, died at the scene. Groves said emergency personnel from Rimbey and Rocky Mountain House responded to the rollover at approximately 4:50 p.m. He said a 28-year-old man, walked to the Open Creek Campground to call for help for his wife, who was not wearing a helmet when the collision occurred.

The woman was located after RCMP, the volunteer fire department and emergency medical crews from Rimbey and Clearwater County Fire Department searched the hilly area west of the campground. STARS Air Ambulance was called in and was able to land in the area. The deceased lady’s husband was treated at Rimbey Hospital for non-life threatening injuries and released. Groves said wearing protective gear including a helmet, chest protector and gloves is important when riding an ATV. He also suggests carrying a satellite phone and letting someone know the details of any planned ride. “Be prepared for the unexpected and let someone know where you are going and the time you are expected to be back.”

Letters to the editor: Widow appeals to public to lobby for emergency care in Sylvan Lake Dear Editor: I want to thank everyone who has emailed me, mailed me letters, signed petitions and sent donations. I have about 20 letters but I need seven times 70. Donations are up to $3,800. I want to give these letters to the Health Minister Fred Horne, MLA Kerry Towle and Sylvan Lake Mayor Susan Samson. Please send me more letters supporting emergency care in Sylvan Lake that would be available on a 24/7 schedule. I lost my husband Aug. 18 at the step of a doctor’s office at 4 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon. The doctor on call never to this day has returned my call in my need of desperation as I didn’t know where or what had happened to my husband for a short time. Only when I finally got a hold of my daughter — as she was trying to save her dad’s life administering CPR — did I know the condition of my husband’s life. Our MLA is supportive however the others want to provide the over 13,200 population here in Sylvan Lake plus the surrounding area — which I am sure exceeds 15,000 residents — and the thousands of visitors we get in Sylvan Lake during the summer months, is only an urgent care facility. And only for non-life threatening injuries. Had there had been an emergency care facility, a life and death facility in Sylvan Lake, my husband’s life could have been saved. I really need everyone’s help in getting letters and petitions signed. Donations can be sent to me or I can provide additional information. I promise every cent will go to emergency care here in Sylvan Lake. The Town of Sylvan is also asking for donations for an

urgent care facility not emergency care. Please send your donations to me. If you don’t have a story of your own, I can email or mail you mine, just sign it. I can email or mail you a petition and you can place anywhere you want, workplace, cafe, church, gas stations. If you can’t mail the letters or petitions back to me, I will pick up letters and petitions — just tell me where to go. I have never asked for so much help in all my life and have never been so desperate and compassionate for anything else as I am over a lifesaving cause for a town that should have had a facility like this in place years ago. Motorist says thanks Dear Editor: I had the misfortune recently of having a flat tire halfway between Rimbey and Ponoka. Once my spare doughnut tire was put on, I took my flat to Western Tire in Rimbey to be repaired. Unfortunately, it was irreparable. The fellows at Western Tire were great. They made numerous phone calls to try to find me a new tire (my tires are an uncommon model), stored my car inside overnight, installed a tire I borrowed and had brought down from Fort Saskatchewan the next day, stowed my spare in the awkward basket under my car, and then wished me Merry Christmas — no charge. Thanks again to the wonderful crew at Western Tire. Louise Donnelly

DARE program reinstated at Rimbey elementary school By Treena Mielke A drug prevention program, dropped last year, because of RCMP staffing constraints, will be reinstated at Rimbey elementary school. Sgt. Mark Groves from the Rimbey RCMP said increased call volume and a shortage of staff resulted in the program being cancelled. However, staff levels have increased enough to warrant reintroducing the program.

Groves said Cst. Larissa Shadforth will begin the necessary training in October to teach DARE at the elementary school. “It (the program) will be provided in the spring semester,” he said. Groves said DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) is a valuable program, which teaches school children to recognize and resist the many direct and subtle pressures put on them to experiment with drugs.

Drug usage continues to be a serious problem in the area and the RCMP continues to uncover several marijuana grow operations and seized cocaine, ecstasy, methamphetamine, magic mushrooms and other illegal narcotics, he said. “We offer programs such as DARE to the schools in

the hopes that it may provide education so we can arm our youth with factual information on illegal drugs so that they are better prepared to make healthy choices.” To provide information on illegal drug activity call (403) 843-2223 or Crime stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477)

Upgrades ... Continued from Page 1 “We have a lot of seniors’ tours and these will help make it easier to get around,” she said. The playground shelter and the overhang of the general store museum have been reshingled and more re-shingling is ongoing thanks to the efforts of board member Don McFadyen, she added. The funding from the county has been a great help with the upgrades, said Jones, noting the historical society is also grateful for the Town of Rimbey who helps with basic operating costs. Pas Ka Poo Park experienced a busy sea-

son with large groups coming through for tours, she said. “We didn’t have as many groups and individuals who came from other countries come visit us this year, but we had a lot of senior tours. Our larger group tours are increasing,” she added. Now that the historical buildings are closed for another season new displays and artifacts are being catalogued. “We received a wonderful set of Belleek Irish china that belonged to Mrs. Jack Beatty which was donated by Don McFadyen,” she said. “It is very thin and fragile and will need to be displayed inside a glass cabinet.” Several antique lanterns including three railroad lanterns were also donated this year. Displays are rearranged and added to each winter, she said.

“We are always putting out new old items.” The Bluffton Legion also donated $500 towards the upkeep of the Legion Building, which came from Bluffton originally and is used to store war artifacts, she said. Smithson International Truck Museum, an integral part of Pas Ka Poo Park is open year round thanks to the dedicated effort of a core group of volunteers. However, more volunteers are needed to step up to the plate to ensure it remains open at the current hours, as two regulars, Dwight Taylor and Lawrence Klassen are moving. Other regular volunteers include Dennis Anderson, Bob Buist, Bob Lapointe, Bill Nesbett and Art Schell. Barney Oldfield, Bud Reynolds and Don McFayden and many others also help out.

Board members include Harold Kenney, (president), Emil Steiger (past president), Pauline Hansen, (treasurer), Bernice Birtsch (secretary), directors, Don McFadyen, Eric Hornsey, Larry Varty, Barney Oldfield and John Solomons. Pas Ka Poo Park was set up in 1964 as a way to preserve the history of Rimbey and the surrounding area. An Anglican church constructed of vertical logs and other buildings, some of which sat on Rimbey’s main street were brought to the park. More museum buildings have since been added. The truck museum has the most complete collection of International half-ton trucks in the world as well as a large license plate collection and historical photographs.

Laurence Terry browses through the Smithson International Truck Museum while on a tour with a group from Ponoka last week. The group enjoyed lunch at the truck museum and later toured the museums at Pas Ka Poo Park. Treena Mielke Photo

Provincial volleyball tourney here in November By Treena Mielke Last year’s decision by town council to install hardwood flooring at the Rimbey Community Centre seems to be paying off this year. Rimbey High School teacher Lisa Shukin said volleyball provincials will be held in town this fall, thanks at least in part to the full size volleyball court and the hardwood floor. “We could not have students playing on tile as it is not as safe as hardwood flooring,” she said. Last fall, council agreed to replace the vinyl floor, which was installed in the ‘80s with hardwood at an approximate cost of $80,000. The decision was partially based on findings by former town councilor, Joe Anglin that sports injury rates are 70 per cent greater on a synthetic floor. Shukin said 12 teams from 2A schools (schools with more than 100 students) will attend the provincials. “The senior girls team is very excited about the event, but are determined to remain focused throughout the season,”she said. Holding the volleyball provincials in Rimbey will bring an influx of up to 1,000 visitors to town, she noted. Rooms have already been booked at both hotels and restaurants need to be prepared to be busy, she added. “It’s very similar to provincial hockey.” School staff is already busy planning for the

Inspirational speaker visits Bentley school Continued from Page 12 He was taken in by foster parents who were both in their 50s and took in neglected and abused children. When Alvin was handed over to them, he was sickly and deformed.

However, having no arms did not get him out of tasks like doing dishes, vacuuming and shoveling snow. He did them and he did them the only way he could. He used his feet for hands.

“Some people like to blame everyone else for their misery, he said, adding that how you see yourself is much more important than how other people see you. “I can’t change how other people see me. I can only change how I see myself. Law concluded his talk with a story about how he learned to play the trombone. He told the students about how his mom received a phone call telling her that her son had scored 96 per cent in a music aptitude test. He said his mom listened to the teacher saying Alvin should play in the school’s marching band and he could have his choice of instruments on which to learn. His mom listened politely, but finally told the teacher there was a problem. “Alvin, sort of, kind of, has no arms, she said. The teacher was embarrassed and apologized for calling, but the story didn’t end there. The teachers talked among themselves and decided to give the boy a chance to play. “I couldn’t believe my good fortune, he said. “I thought, oh wow, I can play in the band, but, big question, how am I going to march? Law said he practiced the trombone a minimum of two hours every night after school and eventually was considered to be the best high school jazz trombonist in Canada.

Music, for Law, became a major focus opening doors he never dreamed possible. Although trombone was his first instrument of choice, by the time he was 16-years-old he was playing drums in front of appreciative audiences. Law concluded his talk by playing a beautiful piece he had composed himself on the keyboard. “You wonder why I’m smiling, he said. “I called the piece, “Ode to the old bag who said my toes were too short (to play the piano). His parting words to the students were simple and to the point. “Remember, there is no such word as can’t. Law created AJL Communications Ltd in 1988 and became a full-time professional speaker.

BERTHA ELLEN KERN December 4, 1921 to September 10, 2012 CROWDER Hattie E. Crowder (nee Brown) of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre; Area Three on Monday, September 10, 2012 at the age of 100 years. Hattie was born in Kelowna, B.C. and lived there until the age of three years, at which time she moved with her family to Rumsey, Alberta. At the age of ten years, they then moved to Buck Lake, Alberta where Hattie lived and attended school. In 1937, she was united in marriage to Ezra W. Clark, a widower with four children. She continued to live in the Buck Lake area until about 1945, at which time she moved to the U.S.A., residing in several states. Before settling in Clarkston, Washington, Hattie went to school and became a hairdresser once her youngest child was in high school. Widowed in 1968, Hattie met and later married A. Ray Crowder in August, 1973. They resided in Clarkston for three more years before relocating to Rimbey in 1976, where she has resided until her passing. Hattie will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her three daughters, Grace Arthur of Salisbury, California; Ann Coffman of Bend, Oregon; and Katie Ramsey of Rimbey; as well as eleven grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, and numerous other relatives. Hattie was predeceased by her parents, William and Katie; two husbands, Ezra Clark and Ray Crowder; two daughters, Aileen Gordon and Faye Hayes; and two sons, Ezra P. Clark and Ira T. Clark. A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Hattie’s Life will be held at the Rimbey Community Centre, Rimbey on Thursday, September 27, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. with Mr. Gary Bokstrom officiating. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer. Interment will take place at a later date in the Maywood Cemetery, Buck Lake.
