More than 50 years of high school graduation of pictures thought destined for the storage room are actually headed to the digitizing room at the Alberni Valley Museum. Further discussions have to be had with the museum about the logistics of the project but that’s the plan, said Alberni District Secondary School Principal Mike Ruttan. The pictures are from “eyeball alley and other points in the old high school on Burde Street and represent each of the graduating classes since 1952. At present, 10 years of class grad pictures are set to adorn the wall near the office of the new high school. The layout of the new high school on Roger Street wasn’t conducive to displaying them as they had been previously, Ruttan

said. Each subsequent year, the bottom class will be bumped from the display in favour of the most recent class. The rest of the pictures will be digitized and available for viewing on a dedicated computer to be located in the library, Ruttan said. School officials first approached the museum in May 2011 about the prospect of digitizing the pics.

The museum was already in the process of digitizing other pictures when the conversation started. There are logistical issues to work out with the digitizing. “Most of the pictures are too large for a conventional scanner so we have to figure out a way around that, Ruttan said. Once the wrinkles have been smoothed out the digitizing process is estimated

to take months. “It’s recording the school’s history and is a community service, Ruttan said. There is another benefit to saving the pictures electronically. Some of the old pictures have gone missing and others are in bad shape, Ruttan said. “We don’t want to lose those things. We want to keep them in perpetuity.

Losing her locks for love COPS FOR CANCER: | Debbie Molloy is raising money for the Tour de Rock by cutting two feet off of her long hair. WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News

A promise to her dying husband is prompting a Port Alberni woman to cut 60 centimetres of her hair off and give the financial proceeds she makes for doing it to Cops For Cancer. Debbie Molloy, 53, is shearing her locks off at Walmart on Friday as part of the Cops For Cancer Tour de Rock. The team of 22 riders will arrive in the Alberni Valley shortly after noon (please see sidebar). The retired health-care worker is living up to a promise she made to her late husband, Junior, who died of lung cancer in October 2011. Molloy trimmed her hair last summer and said the last time it was short was five years ago. “Junior said to me “You’ve got that big mop of hair, so if you want to do this for me then go for it” and I am,” she said. Molloy said she hopes to raise $3,000 and has set up a website for people to get information about her initiative and to make donations.

Junior was diagnosed with lung cancer two years ago and began to undergo chemotherapy. But the procedure was too virulent and he subsequently stopped it. “He was getting too sick from it and wanted to concentrate on quality of life rather than quantity of it,” Debbie said. “He wanted to live the rest of his life the way he wanted to live it and he did.” Born in the Maritimes, Junior was a vagabond— never staying in one place too long. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces until he retired in 1993. The couple came to Port Alberni 19 years ago after living in Ontario. The couple returned to Nova Scotia in May 2011 to see Junior’s family for what he said was the last time. It was the last trip he took, Debbie said. Junior and Debbie have no children. He was survived by an older brother and sister. “He died before them but that was him,” Debbie said. “People used to say he didn’t do things by the book but he did—by his own book.”

Catalyst boss moves on Water leaks force pool

to close indefinitely: city

MILL: | Tom Paisley heads back to Maritimes. WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON

ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Catalyst Paper mill manager Tom Paisley is headed back home to New Brunswick after three and a half years in Port Alberni. The announcement was made to mill staff on Monday and a search for a replacement is underway. Paisley’s last day will be in midOctober after which he will head to New Brunswick, where he is originally from and still maintains a small property. “Our son and daughter still live there. Our daughter is getting ready to give birth to our first grandchild,” Paisley said. “It’s home, so it’s a good time to move.”

Echo pool remains closed indefinitely and October programs have been cancelled in the wake of continued leakage problems, Parks and Recreation Manager Scott Kenny said. The pool is still leaking 1.5 cubic metres of water per hour, which would equate to a complete water change every month if the pool were open, Kenny said. Pool staff first identified leakage problems more than three weeks ago. The culprit was thought to be perimeter grouting and a new material was installed. That work has since been finished but the problem persists, Kenny said. The work wasn’t all for naught as it needed to be done anyway, he added. The problem is now thought to stem from two drainage pipes, which Parks and Recreation staff are working to cap this weekend. “We can repair them next year during summer shutdown,” Kenny said. The bulk of the cost to do the work is labour, he said.

Catalyst Paper mill manager, standing in front of a wood chipper at the mill on Port Alberni’s waterfront, is leaving next month.

Paisley has spent more than three years at Catalyst’s mill in Port Alberni. He came from Catalyst’s mill in Campbell River, which closed permanently in 2010. Before that he worked at mills in Prince Albert, Sask. and in Miramichi, NB. Paisley has enjoyed

his stay in Alberni, he said. “It’s beautiful country here.” Paisley said he isn’t aware of any sendoff plans at the mill. “I’m not much for goodbyes. Maybe we’ll just have a beer at a pub,” he said. reporter@albernivalleynews.com Twitter.com/AlberniNews

The pool’s concrete water supply trench, which extends down the centre of the pool, was suspected to be the problem, Kenny said. But a thorough examination of the area hasn’t revealed anything. Staff have pulled out the stops and are examining the pools

using pipe inspection cameras to find the problem, he added. The pool will be filled on Sunday or Monday. “If it leaks then it leaks and we’ll deal with it then,” Kenny said. Staff are hoping the fix will work and that the pool can be opened late next

week. Otherwise, no firm opening date is scheduled, Kenny said. Swimming programs scheduled to start in the first week of October have been cancelled and families are now being contacted, he added.

Port Alberni RCMP are on the hunt for a driver who struck a pedestrian in a crosswalk and sped off last Wednesday night. The accident happened at approximately 7:30 p.m. when a 25-year-old woman was walking west in the crosswalk at Third Avenue and Bute

Street when she was struck by a truck traveling south on Third Avenue, RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan said. The truck sped off after knocking the woman to the ground in front of the Husky Gas Station, where the victim was set to meet a friend. The friend found the woman

laying on the ground and transported her to West Coast General Hospital, where she was treated for serious injuries including multiple leg fractures. Police are looking for a small black pickup truck, quite possibly a Ford Ranger.

Vandals wreck man’s sole mode of transportation WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News

A retired Port Alberni forestry worker with health problems is out of pocket for repairs after a vandal maliciously damaged his scooter. Dino DeMarni, 74, left his residence in

the Third Avenue and Montrose Street area on a Sunday afternoon to go for a ride on his electric scooter. But the former shakeblock cutter was in for a shock when he lifted the canvas covering his bike, parked outside his door. “Someone poured ketchup on my battery while it was charging

dra’s Pick n a S

and ruined it. Those cost almost $300 to replace,” DeMarni said. The damage was repairable. But two days later DeMarni found that someone poured a large pot of soup into the battery compartment of his scooter and ruined it. “It was a lot of soup,” DeMarni

said. “I’m calling it a hate crime because whoever did it didn’t do it out of love. I don’t know why they did it.” The loss of the scooter has caused DeMarni hardship. He lives on a fixed income, making repairing the damage or buying a new scooter onerous. As well, he suffered a stroke three years ago and uses the scooter

as his only mode of transportation. DeMarni says he’s had trouble with some people in his neighbourhood and has talked to the police about it. RCMP Const. Theresa Thompson said that police attended the scene and spoke to one individual but that no charges were laid. reporter@albernivalleynews.com Twitter.com/AlberniNews

Kuu-us gets facelift for anniversary

WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

What a fresh coat of paint and a little yard work will do for a place. Volunteers were out in force at the Kuu-us Crisis Line complex on Johnston Road last Saturday giving the old buildings a face lift. Chief among the volunteers were six Dulux Paints staff at the site who helped paint the buildings. The business donated $15,000 worth of time and material to paint the buildings as part of a special international program to assist the less fortunate, Dulux official Cary Herbers said. “We wanted to do it earlier this year but we had a late spring and summer is our busy season,” Herbers said A coat of paint was applied to the administration building, the living units and the storage shed. The colour scheme blends with the neighbourhood, said Kuu-us executive director Elia Nicholson-Nave. “It’s amazing to watch this blossom. It’s like the cherry on top of the ice cream sundae,” Nicholson Nave said. It’s been a year since Kuu-us assumed ownership of the property via a federal program, which gave homeless initiative programs first crack at federal properties it was disposing of. Kuu-us officials applied for the Adding Colour To People’s Lives program last year and were subsequently chosen. The program is national in scope and the initiative is part of the World Wide Dulux Movement to add colour to people’s lives in neighbourhoods around the globe, from North and South America to Europe and Asia, Herbers said. Domestically, each Dulux Paints store independently selects a local organization to support. Kuu-us works with the homeless, operates transitional housing and maintains a crisis

when the hog fuel is wet but this amounts to little more than one per cent of the fuel source required, Paisley said. Burning hog fuel isn’t new, Paisley said. The company started doing it 30 years ago but just does more of it now as a standard of practice. “It’s talked about more often now but we’ve been doing it for years,” he said. ALBERNI VALLEY HILL CLIMBERS QUAD CLUBS FIRST ANNUAL POKER RIDE

On the weekend of August 26, the Alberni Valley Hill Climbers Quad Club, along with the Comox Valley Quad Club, co-hosted the first annual poker ride in the Alberni Valley. There were two separate courses, with the main one in the Great Central Lake area, and a second course which came in from the Comox Lake direction; the Great Central Lake side had enough riders that we had to run two separate groups, the first led by Warren Crump, and the second led by Brigitte Arndt. In total, we had 36 quads and side-by-sides. The top prize winners for the weekend were: 1st place – Tony Stetner – Comox Valley ATV Club, with a hand of four 8s, 2nd place – Alex Jessiman – Cowichan Valley ATV Club, full house, 7s over kings, 3rd place – Sofie Williamson – Comox Valley ATV Club, straight, king high. The winner of the draw prize was Willie Watts, who was visiting from Tumbler Ridge Due to the generosity of our sponsors, every participant received a prize, and the Hill Climbers Quad Club would like to thank the following businesses for their kind donations... • A & W Restaurant • Breakers Marine Ltd • Jack & Lorna’s Cafe • Lordco Auto Parts • M & D Auto Parts Ltd. • Napa Auto Parts • Port Boat House • Solda’s Family Restaurant • Starbucks

and are at work on a few for the future, he said. “The workers best know the equipment,” Paisley said. “We’re always looking at ways we can reduce our energy consumption,” he said. The company is greener that it used to be, Paisley said. According to Catalyst figures, the company produces 76 per cent less greenhouse gas than it did in 1990. And 87 per cent of the energy the company uses come from renewable resources, Paisley said. Paisley wouldn’t speculate what this translates to in dollar savings. “But the company wouldn’t be in business if it wasn’t a lot,” he said. The company also consistently produces better effluent emission results than is federally legislated, he said. Hog fuel burns environmentally cleaner, but it has a different kind of green benefits for the company as well. The company saves money using hog fuel because it is cheaper than when oil was used the past, Paisley said. Commerce also played a role in shaping the company’s green policy and practices. “Our customers want an environmental pedigree and we’ve responded to that need,” Paisley said. reporter@albernivalleynews.com Twitter.com/AlberniNews

Tax on medical pot not a joke Swapping sociology for socket sets When a club that sells medical marijuana completely spaces out on paying $150,000 in income taxes, stoner jokes aren’t far behind. But for the thousands of people who use marijuana to ease chronic pain from illness and side effects of legal medication, the possibility of losing ready access to medical pot doesn’t bring out the giggles. Leon “Ted” Smith and his Victoria-based Cannabis Buyers’ Club of Canada has sold marijuana products for 16 years to thousands of people who can prove they have certain permanent diseases or chronic ailment. Smith admits in the media and on his website that he’s avoided paying taxes to the Canada Revenue Agency for years and wrote: “(I) assumed I would end up in jail for it.” This kind of sloppy bookkeeping does little to improve the public image of selling or using medical marijuana. Hopefully this won’t undo the good work Smith has done helping suffering people and challenging ethically-dubious laws that snares marijuana in a grey area of legality. Indeed, among the number of court cases involving Smith and the CBCC, this year a trial involving the CBCC’s head baker had restrictive parts of federal medical marijuana law deemed unconstitutional. This is typical of laws that try to have it both ways. Health Canada allows people to purchase and/or grow marijuana for medical purposes, which is a tacit admission that marijuana can help some sick people – while the agency discourages its use. Sick people having some access to pot is better than none, but inconsistent messages from health authorities and the federal government opens the door for advocates such as Smith to operate businesses that are effectively illegal. — Saanich News

ICTORIA – Premier Christy Clark’s latest employment announcement set the tone for one of the big issues in the 2013 election. Flanked by aircraft technician students at BCIT in Burnaby, Clark announced a $75-million program to upgrade aging trade and technical school facilities and hire instructors. And she did it with some pointed criticism of the career path chosen by many of today’s high school students. Clark introduced a student electrician, the first woman to win the senior technology education award at her high school, who then went on to get a bachelor’s degree in English and sociology. No job, so she went to BCIT. Her message was clear. The government’s pre-

election budget is going to shift priorities to the huge number of skilled trades jobs that are already going begging in the north. More students will get started in high school, instead of being subsidized to wander around and find themselves with an unfocused university degree that still leaves them in need of practical skills. Shop upgrades were announced for trades training in Prince George, Kelowna and Greater Victoria. There will be new student financial aid, but it will be tied to skill programs the economy needs now. And with the government’s financial situation, you can bet that sociology, women’s studies and the rest of the dead-end programs dear to the hearts of last year’s

Occupy campers will feel the pinch. The B.C. Liberal skills training push was partly inspired by last year’s “inequality” protest, after Dawson Creek Mayor Mike Bernier waded into the Occupy Vancouver squat to hand out business cards. They need cooks and labourers as well as pipefitters up there these days, and that’s before the B.C. gas patch goes into a huge expansion for Asian exports. A version of Kevin Falcon’s “welfare air” idea to move unemployed recipients north was included in last week’s announcement by Clark and her jobs czar, Pat Bell. Called “Job Match,” it’s a $2.9-million pilot program in the Peace region. It will deliver basic education and work

boots for people in that region before anyone will be flown up from Nanaimo or Nelson. Cruising along at nearly 50 per cent in the polls, the NDP have also put emphasis on postsecondary. But they’re still playing to the urban Occupy crowd, with a promise of a tax on banks to fund student grants. Instead of providing loan relief after successful completion, they’re going to hand out money at the front end, just like they did in my student days. My experience as a student, a job seeker and a parent is that free money encourages aimless study, and the selection of courses that are appealing rather than safe investments. We already have far too much of that, and I think most students today would be better off with a bigger debt and a well-paying job. As the new trades plan was being rolled out, former finance minister Colin Hansen announced he’s retiring. Continued / 11

Hansen pushed same training From / 10 It was Hansen who started the push for skills training back in 2008, emphasizing that there will be a million new jobs open by 2019, 600,000 of them due to retiring baby boomers. Hansen made a sales trip to snowy Toronto to launch advertising to lure people to B.C. That effort is being revised with a series

of interprovincial and international trips, because even if all 650,000 high school students graduate and go to work in B.C. from now to 2019, it won’t be enough to fill all the jobs on the horizon. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com

Mailbag: Feedback on ‘Eyeball Alley’, eyeballing roadworks ADSS photos stored for now To the Editor, Re: Old ADSS pics worth saving, Letters, Sept. 20. I should really not be surprised when a rumour suddenly becomes a “decision”. Recently, a letter was written stating that the framed grad photographs from “Eyeball Alley” at the old ADSS were going to be boxed and buried. That was followed up by the comment that, in the writer’s opinion, “and that of many others, is that this decision should be reversed”. In fact, no decision has been made. The pictures have been carefully stored at the museum, and at some point, there will be a decision made regarding the future of those pictures. It would have been so easy for the writer of that letter to just call up one of six Alberni Valley school trustees, or call the board office, and ask, instead of perpetuating a rumour and encouraging speculation. But facts aren’t nearly as much fun as fiction, right? Rosemarie Buchanan,

Port Alberni Editor’s note: Rosemarie Buchanan is a trustee in School District 70.

A proposal for ‘eyeball alley’ To the Editor, Re: Old ADSS pics worth saving, Letters, Sept. 20 It was good to read that Barry Miller is concerned about keeping the heritage of ADSS grad class photographs in place in the new high school. Many people no doubt share his concern. However, there may be a modern solution that would resolve the perceived architectural problem. May I suggest a technological solution, which would complement the grand appearance of the new high school while preserving the historical significance of the decades of “faces of the past”? The following proposal would, of course, be subject to the blessing and participation of the School District, the City’s Alberni Vallley Museum and a good representation of ADSS alumni. Firstly, I suggest that the school district approach the Alberni

Valley Museum to see if they would have space to store the grad photos in perpetuity. Secondly, I suggest that Barry Miller recruit a committee of ADSS alumni for the purpose of raising funds to pay for a contract for the museum to digitally catalogue all the grad photos so that they may be accessed and viewed remotely via the Internet by anyone interested in seeing them. Thirdly, I suggest that Barry’s committee also raise funds for the purchase and installation of an 80-inch HD LCD monitor at a prominent location within the new high school for the purpose of displaying a continuous loop of past years of grad class photos. It would also be desirable to have the ability for certain years to be displayed for periods of time, such as during class reunions, and for the display to be interactive. Maybe ADSS might be the first high school to implement such a system. Nothing wrong with some bragging rights. I am happy to pledge the first $100 to Barry’s campaign. The ball is now in his

court.

New road needed: writer To the Editor, I would like to offer my support for the proposed coal mine near Buckley Bay. I am confident that the mine review process is thorough and scientific, and that if the mine is approved it will be a great benefit to the mid-Island and to the provincial treasury. My primary concern with the mine is the increased traffic on Highway 4 to Port Alberni. This is a great opportunity to complete a new connector from the Island Highway to Port Alberni through the Horne Lake area. Perhaps the construction of this road should be a condition of the mine’s approval. Jim Cameron, Parksville

Roadwork looks unsafe To the Editor, I have just finished reading the story about the progress of the repairs on Third Avenue. I keep reading about how safe this province

likes to keep its work force. I spent 35 years working in the commercial industry back in Ontario and my eyes almost feel out of my head. The picture you took shows two men working below ground level with at least eight feet of excavated soil above their heads. In my time in the industry the site would have been closed on the spot and a fine of $250,000 or more issue against the company operating the project. And at the same time the city would also receive the same fine for allowing the work to proceed without the proper safety precautions being put in place. What should have been put in the trench was an eight-foot steel cage that would have protected the workers at the bottom of the trench. You will probably hear that the workers were in no danger of a collapse because of the type soil being dug up. That is no excuse for not following proper safety precautions. In the past too many men and women have died for these same reasons. Terry Short, Port Alberni

Sunflowers hotly contested Dozens of enthusiastic seniors, staff and volunteers from five seniors homes got together at Westhaven this month for the second annual sunflower growing contest. This type of event is now part of the tradition among Alberni Valley seniors. The residents, along with staff, volunteers and family members dedicate their time to plant, grow and care for these beautiful plants in preparation for the yearly competition. at pumpkin competitions held at different senior homes. This year’s sunflower event, coordinated by Westhaven activity coordinator Victoria Roscoe-Romaunis, also saw residents taking part in the Sunflower Tic-TacToe, which placed Rose Harvey from Fir Park Village in first place; the Sunflower Bean Bag Game; and the Guess the Seeds in the Jar contest, won by Westhaven (968 seeds!). By the end of the competition, van Kooten announced the winners: Rainbow Gardens won the prize for growing the tallest sunflower at 11 feet eight inches. The shortest plant contest was won by the residents of Fir Park Village: (33 inches) and Heritage Place took the honours by raising the most unusual and smallest flower.

Summary of Initiative: The initiative draft Bill entitled, “Sensible Policing Act” proposes to amend the Police Act to no longer use provincial police resources on the enforcement of current laws in relation to simple possession and use of cannabis by adults. The draft law would prohibit the use of provincial police resources for this purpose, would require police to report in detail to the Minister of Justice any actual use of resources for this purpose and why it was necessary, and require the Minister to publish that report. The Bill also proposes that the Province would call upon the Federal Government to repeal the federal prohibition on cannabis, or give British Columbia an exemption, such that British Columbia is able to tax and regulate cannabis similar to the regulation of alcohol and tobacco. As well it proposes that British Columbia shall establish a Provincial Commission to study the means and requirements necessary for the province to establish a legal and regulated model for the production and use of cannabis by adults. Last, the Bill would make non-lawful possession and use of cannabis by minors an offence similar to possession and use of alcohol.

Individuals who have mobility problems, injuries or other health concerns that make bathing difficult will find this a most welcome service. The community bathing program came about as a result of community members approaching

Tsawaayuus to use the bathtub in the residential care facility. Staff have made every effort to accommodate the requests over the last number of years. “Now, we are in a position to offer services with some extra pampering,”says Casavant. Board members, staff and residents at Tsawaayuus are so very appreciative of support from the community at large for rising to the occasion whenever help is requested.

CARRIER OF THE WEEK JOSH & STEVEN MARSHALL Fun By The Numbers Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mindbending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test! Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must ďŹ ll each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can ďŹ gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Josh, 14, and his brother Steven, 12, have been delivering the Alberni Valley News since Janurary 2009. Over the summer Josh and Steven made a few trips to Vancouver to spend time with family. In his spare time Josh likes to play video games and sports. Steven also likes video games and hanging out with his friends. Each week Josh and Steven deliver to 85 homes on their central Port route. Josh likes to spend his route earnings on food and video games and Steven has just saved up enough of his route earning to buy himself an iPod. Along with our thanks, Josh & Steven received some Black Press merchandise and a $10 gift card from Walmart! SIGN UP NOW TO BE A PAPER CARRIER AND GET A FREE GIFT

Lise Maltais of Comox found Sproat Lake a great place to paddle her board as well as paddle in the dragon boats.

Angel Magnussen was very pleased that the dragon boat team of Ladies of the Lake decided to have a monetary draw with her/Variety Club as the recipient. Thanks to the many generous individuals there was a total of $617.50.

The water bomber takes on a whole different look when seen in the early morning mist of Sproat Lake.

Colleen Salter of Campbell River was the lucky winner of this beautiful paddle that was raffled off by one of the dragon boat teams.

Plan ahead for all the right reasons.

Bulldogs’ Manny Gialedakis, left, celebrates Evan Anderson’s power play goal that puts the Bulldogs on the scoreboard in Surrey, Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs won 5-4 in overtime, their lone win in a threegame Lower Mainland tilt. The Bulldogs host Island rival Nanaimo Clippers on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Coach’s Comment Nanaimo Clippers @ Alberni Valley Bulldogs September 29, 2012 @ 7:00pm

This is the first regular season meeting between the Clippers and the Bulldogs. Judging from the spirited exhibition games between these two island rivals, the fan are the ones that will benefit from the 8 regular season match-ups. Going into weekend action, the Bulldogs are one point ahead of Nanaimo but the Clippers have three games in hand already. Key off-season additions for the Clippers have been 92 F Reid Sturos who has 4 points in 4 games and a commitment to Michigan Tech next season and 93 G Jayson Argue who has appeared in all 4 games for Nanaimo posting a 3-1 record with a GAA of 1.76. The Bulldogs have exploded out the gates with the most goals for in the BCHL. Leading the charge are third-year Bulldog Lars Hepso with 7 goals, rookie Nathan Craft with 4 (including the game winner in Surrey on Sunday) and Evan Tironese with 3. Be sure to come out on Saturday for some great Bulldogs hockey and a chance to help Angel raise some much need funds for the “This One’s For Jeneece” cause. Sponsored by:

Bulldogs moves bolster roster The Alberni Valley Bulldogs have made a slew of roster changes as they prepares to face division rivals Cowichan Valley Capitals and Nanaimo Clippers this weekend. The Bulldogs re-assigned forward Michael Sandor to the Penticton Lakers of the KIJHL Junior B league. He will remain an affiliate player with the Bulldogs unless another Junior A team picks up his playing rights. The move was needed to reduce the roster to make way for players returning from injured reserve, Bulldogs head coach Kevin Willison said in a release. The team also re-assigned forward Jon Brumwell to the Campbell River Storm of the VIJHL Junior

Brumwell was identified at the Alberni Valley Bulldogs 2012 spring identification camp after spending the 2011-12 season with the Phoenix Junior Coyotes U18 program. “Jon is a great kid who needs to identify his game to play at the Junior A level,” Willison said. “Jon will work hard to improve his game in hopes to be in a Bulldogs uniform again sometime soon.” It wasn’t all subtractions though. The team added

forward Chris Tracy from Marlton, New Jersey. Tracy played the majority of the 2011/12 season with the Langley Rivermen, where he recorded 15 goals and 13 assists in 47 games in his rookie year. Tracy was released by the Rivermen at the start of the season due to roster space issues and also appeared in four games for the Surrey Eagles. Tracy started practice with the Bulldogs last week. ICE CHIPS...The Bulldogs play home and away games this weekend. They play the Cowichan Valley Capitals in Cowichan on Friday night. ‘Jon will work hard to improve his game...’

This beautiful September weather continues to keep those golf clubs in use. It is going to be sad to have to put them away for the winter. But no matter how long and how good the golf season is, winter is inevitable. So take advantage of these beautiful evenings and shoot a round of golf. Ladies night at Hollies Golf course will continue until the end of September with a start time of 5:30 p.m. Sandy Toombs won the “B” division with Donna Shannon coming in a close second. Carol Bouchard won the “A” division with a score

of 36, followed by LaDonna Knutson. Longest putt, sponsored by A Step Above, was won by Karen Vandermolen. Lisa Young took home the second closest to the pin award, sponsored by Sunnydale Golf and Country Club and Rhonda Holcombe won the second closest to the pin prize, sponsored by Safeway. Tineke Rodger took home the longest drive of the night, sponsored by Tim Hortons. Mary Ann McConnell and Sue Steinhauer are still tied at the top of the ringer board at a score of 28. Ladies night has raised a total of $500 to date for Ty Watson House. In addition to raising money for the Ty Watson House, there is a monthly 50/50 draw, with the proceeds going to the

SPCA. The deuce pot still hasn’t been won and stands at $225. We still have a couple of weeks left in the season and will be a really nice pot for a lucky golfer to take home. For all of the Beach Boy fans, you might know the song Good Vibrations. The song was written because Brian Wilson’s mother had good feelings towards animals. I was told recently that I had good vibrations. Could it be because I have three dogs and one cat? I also help take care of Sylvestor, our resident cat at the office. A cat that lives in the wild beside my house has also adopted me. It helps to prove my theory that golfers are a very giving bunch and support many worthwhile causes.

Cross surrenders challenge pin JOAN THOMPSON

Pitch n’ Putt

If we didn’t have bad luck we wouldn’t have any luck at all. At least that’s the way it seemed for most of us on Tuesday. The game started out fairly quietly at first but then the wheels fell off. The whole idea was to assign each player a number, one to four, and when you finished the hole you had to take the score of the player with the corresponding number. If you rolled a five you had to take five strokes for the

hole and if you rolled a six you got to choose the best hole for your team. Sharon Haggard and Joan Thompson got real lucky to have played with Carol Hastings, who dragged them around the whole course and came in with first place, carding a net 73. The game was called Port Scramble. Janice Cross, the holder of the Challenge Pin relinquished it today to challenger, Sandra Simpson. Carol Bouchard took the low gross honours. Carol Hastings beat out the rest of the gamblers with her low net score of 66.

9-Hole Division: Marta Willimson was out in front as the low gross scorer. Marie Swain scooped the low net and finally, LaDonna Knutson and Kathy Toms shared the putting pot. B Division: Low gross score was carded by Lorraine Wilson. Marj Dufour was alone in the low net category. Lesley Anderson and Louise Berlinsky split the putting pot, having had the fewest number of putts. These girls went “chipping” crazy... Mary Ann sunk hers on hole No. 1. Betty Adair holed out on No. 7; Cass Parker on No. 3 and Lesley

Anderson on No. 5. Marta Williamson not only chipped in on No. 4 but that chip-in gave her a birdie. Willimson went on the finish her round with pars on holes No. 2, No. 5, and No. 8. Well done. We should have had money on you. Reminders: Friday, Sept. 28 is the Night Golf at the Alberni Golf Club. The Business Ladies final scramble is on Sunday, Sept. 30th... sign up for either of these fun events in the pro shop. The ladies’ closing luncheon will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 9. We all need to get our name on the circulating list.
