Senator awards Queen’s medal to volunteer BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Ken Miller is a familiar face in many local volunteer activities and his efforts were acknowledged by Senator Nancy Greene Raine on Sept. 20. Before introducing Greene Raine, Coun. Tanya Ducharme cited Miller’s involvement with groups including Knights of Columbus, Citizens on Patrol, the Regional District of Central Kootenay Area B advisory planning commission, Creston Valley Blossom Festival, the Canyon water board, New Life Furniture and Recycling and the local housing society. He often works in concert with his wife, Signe. “His wonderful organizational skills are of great value in our community,” Greene Raine, representing the government of Canada, said in presenting Miller with a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Greene Raine, a onetime champion alpine skier who was named Canada’s female athlete of the 20th century, spoke about the value of volunteers. See CRESTON, page 28

Senior mixed curling is scheduled to begin on Oct. 11 and is looking for both male and female curlers over the age of 50. All levels of curlers are welcome, from those who have never played to those who have been away from the game for years to returning avid curlers. There will be a clinic available for new curlers. Stick curlers are also welcome. Curling brooms and shoes (clean runners work) are all the equipment necessary and are available locally. Curling fees can be paid at the Creston and District Community Complex. The cost is $170 for the full season or $85 for a half-season. There may be late penalty charged for registrations after Oct. 1. Curling runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. until March. The Alberta-based trio of Brent Anderson from Wetaskiwin and Dianne and Dale Johnson from Edmonton will play at 6 p.m. Sept. 29 at Millennium Park and 11 a.m. Sept. 30 at the Creston Baptist Church. The mixed trio has been nominated three years in a row for southern gospel album of the year, winning the Covenant Award in 2008 for the album I Believe. This year is the trio’s 12th year serving Western Canada on a part-time schedule. Each of the group members is employed full-time and enjoys weekend events where the gospel can be shared in music. “We especially enjoy banquets,” said Dale, “as we are parttime singers but fulltime eaters.” The group’s sound is a contemporary Southern gospel style with a good mix of old hymns with new arrangements. For more information, contact the Baptist church at 250-428-7547 or visit threeandcompany.com. ••• The Yasodhara Ashram is inviting everyone to attend its fall session of community classes from Oct. 3-Nov. 28, as hatha and dream yoga are

explored on Wednesday evenings at the ashram’s Mandala House. Hidden Language Hatha Yoga takes the practice of hatha yoga beyond a series of physical exercises. It is a gentle and meditative style of Hatha that respects the body as a spiritual tool. By working with metaphor, symbolism, imagery and visualization, the “hidden” messages of each asana are revealed. Participants should bring a journal. The class runs from 6-7:30, and is $8 to drop in or $64 for the session. Dream Yoga combines yoga techniques and practices with an investigation of symbolism, it opens up a dialogue with the unconscious mind and is a detailed method of interpreting the messages of your subconscious to create change in your waking life. The yogic method of working with dreams emphasizes independence and builds understanding of yourself as an individual. Participants should also bring a journal to this class, which runs from 7:45-9:15 p.m. and is $64. The cost for taking both classes is: $115. Registration is in advance by contacting Yasodhara Ashram at 250-227-9224 or yashram@yasodhara.org, or by arriving early the first night of class. ••• Creston area residents are encouraged to vote for Alex Nilsson as a Game Changer in a Scotiabank contest that could see a $100,000 donated in his name to the Creston-Kootenay Foundation. Owner brings Tivoli into 21st century

Who: Bonnie Geddes What: Bringing movies to the silver screen Where: Tivoli Theatre When: Since 1975 Why: “It’s a great business!”

BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Bonnie Geddes’ relationship with the Tivoli Theatre goes back to 1975, when she was dating Ken Alderson, whose parents owned the theatre. She began working there, even learning the projection end of the business. The strong light needed to project images to the screen was provided by an arc of electricity jumping from one carbon rod to another. “Apparently they were dangerous,” Geddes laughs now. “I had no idea.” She recalls having to set the rods into place, ensuring they were touching correctly, so they would burn at the same rate and last through to the end of a reel. Otherwise, the movie would have to be stopped while new ones were installed. It is something of an understatement to say she has seen a lot of change in the business, especially after having installed a state-of-the-art digital projection and 3D system in July. One of 15 children in the Mehrer family, Geddes grew up on a farm in Canyon after her parents decided living in Lethbridge wasn’t practical for their large family. “’Let’s look for something in the country,’ they said. They bought a farm in Canyon, right across from the park. My dad is still on that farm he bought in 1966,” she says. Lots of kids and not much money meant the Mehrers’ life centred around home and school. “We were always busy. We

had no money but we were involved in arts, in drama, in music, in anything that the school put out that was free. We did sports, too, but we couldn’t afford the travel stuff. “We didn’t have TV so we created our own entertainment. We made our own skits at home and we entertained all the neighbours. It was fun.” Her first time in a movie theatre didn’t come until she was 13 or 14. “To go to town wasn’t a thing we did much, maybe once a month,” Geddes says. “My first movie was a horror film, which was awful.” By the time she was in Grade 10 or 11, though, she was going into town to the Tivoli once a week with friends. And the drive-in was a big attraction, too. “On Monday nights, if you’ll recall, it was a dollar a car,” she laughs. “My dad would take us. There might be 20 of us, but we were all in there!” She later married and had children. She and her former

Lorne Eckersley

husband, Jim Karountzos, started Dionysos Restaurant and they eventually purchased the Tivoli Theatre, which was next door. In the 1980s they converted it into the Bingo Palace, which operated as a fundraiser for community groups for a decade. Eventually, a lessee reconverted the building back to a theatre, operating it until 1998. Bonnie resumed control and reopened the theatre in 1999. “I walked into the projection room and here were three six-foot diameter platters. Film from the reels was spliced together in one long piece so you didn’t have to change projectors every 12 or 15 minutes — it was quite a change.” In the system she had trained on, two projectors were used. A weight system rang a bell when the reel on one was running out and the projectionist had to start the other projector so the next reel would begin running, making the change appear seamless — with luck — to the audience. “And then I came back

there was one projector, one reel, one halogen bulb and I thought, ‘This is easy.’ I was pretty excited. “We worked with it like that for 12 years. It was a good system, but mechanicals have their drawbacks. Vibrations can work set screws loose, static builds up. “So I’ve seen the changes from the original 1938 system through 1999’s to modern-day. And now digital just blows me away.” Geddes and her husband, Rob, who owns Multi-Tech Systems, visited a large tech show in Las Vegas last spring and decided to invest in new digital equipment — sound and video projection, as well as a 3D system and a new silver screen. They chose a Canadian manufacturer and it took an installer eight days to put everything together and ensure it was running properly. First up on the new system was The Amazing Spider-Man and she hasn’t looked back. For the last Harry Potter movie, the Tivoli had its first ever midnight showing. “’Am I going to get two or 200 people?’ I wondered. I had no clue.” She had her staff, or “cast”, as she refers to them, dressed in Harry Potter gear and 220 arrived for that showing. “We didn’t get home until 5:30 in the morning. We were exhausted. The atmosphere was great.” In August, a ladies’ night drew 167 viewers to Magic Mike. That event had a liquor licence and the first drink was included in the price of admission. “I don’t think many of the ladies were following the storyline closely, but we had a great time!” In recent years, Geddes has restored the marquee and upgraded the façade, working to maintain the visual integrity of one of Creston’s best art deco buildings. Now, with the new digital system and capability to add a satellite receiver, the Tivoli brings a whole new world of entertainment to Creston. “I always say that our customers come to enjoy themselves. They are here to be entertained. They are not here to be stressed. It’s a great business!”

Tivoli Theatre screening 3D opera BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

A year after the English National Opera produced the world’s first opera in 3D video, Creston’s Tivoli Theatre is showing the famed London company’s second effort, Madam Butterfly. “This is very exciting for us,” said Tivoli Theatre owner Bonnie Geddes. “With the installation of our state-ofthe-art digital and 3D projection and sound systems, we are now able to offer some truly wonderful forms of entertainment.” In previewing the film, Geddes commented that she was captivated by the clarity of the picture — in all three of its dimensions. “At one point I leaned over to try to see behind one of the singers,” she laughed. “The 3D image is that real!” Madam Butterfly, featuring the music of Giacomo Puccini, has long been one of the world’s most beloved operas. It related the story of Cio-Cio San, a Japanese geisha, who falls in love with, and weds, an American naval officer while his ship sits in Nagasaki harbour. He leaves soon afterward and returns three years later, not knowing that Cio-Cio San, or Butterfly, has borne his child. Outstanding performances by Liping Zhang, who has been acclaimed worldwide in the role as Butterfly, and James Valenti as Pinkerton, dominate the simple, stylized stage setting. This production of Madam Butterfly was filmed with 3D cameras during live performances at the Royal Opera House (Covent Garden) in London earlier this year. “This is the first opera I have ever seen,” Geddes admitted. “And now that I know the story, I’ll probably enjoy it even more when I watch it again.” The Tivoli Theatre has two showings scheduled for Madam Butterfly. It will be screened on Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. and Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at Black Bear Books or the theatre box office. For more information, call 250-4287469.

My name is Lorne and I’m a Facebook fan. There, I admitted it. Does that mean I’m now on the road to recovery? Facebook is the only form of social networking that I use consistently (I still don’t “get Twitter, and it’s not from a lack of trying). It’s like the prototypical drunk uncle, full of faults but still hard not to like. After all, how else to keep up with family and friends from all over the world, or even the activities of friends right here in the Creston Valley? While its detractors rant about privacy issues, Facebook does let users pretty much control who sees what. In the end, users determine what they write and what photos they post, so letting information get into the wrong hands or get too widespread is pretty much their fault, not Facebook’s. I’ve particularly enjoyed being able to reconnect, or to connect more regularly, with a number of our former Rotary exchange students, most of which spent three to six months in our home, becoming part of our family and bringing us countless wonderful memories. Even if I am not communicating directly, I get updates when they post about their activities and I can pop into their pages to see if they have added photos. One of the great peculiarities, though, is Facebook’s use of Bing translations — our exchange students regularly post in languages including Finnish, Turkish, French and Russian. I’ve typically skipped these posts in the past, but recently I’ve been clicking on the Bing trans-

lations. While they aren’t particularly illuminating, they are at least entertaining. Consider the following exchange. I’ve included the origi-

This is the Life

A lot of fall colour can be added to your garden

Late summer or early fall is usually the time of year that evergreen trees like pine and Douglas fir lose their three- or four-year-old needles. As most people aren’t aware that they do drop needles on purpose, this can occasionally be a cause for concern. “How come my pine tree is full of yellow needles? they ask. “It looks like it is sick. All evergreens shed their needles because of the simple fact that younger leaves or needles are just that much more efficient in collecting solar energy and making food. Older leaves often get shaded out. In any case, nutrients are recycled and new growth is put out the following spring. As the green pigment chlorophyll dies, other colours are revealed. On deciduous plants (ones that lose their leaves every autumn) this is a cause for enjoyment, not concern. Shorter day lengths and cooler nights cause a spectacular display of fall colour. Adding some to your garden can be as easy as planting a burning bush. The more neglect

they endure towards the end of summer the earlier the colour will be on display. However, all plants should receive extra water as the winter approaches to ensure their

scape and are deer proof and drought tolerant. In darker red tones, we have the snowball bush and a relation the Summer Snowflake vibernum. These plants really have multiple seasons of interest from the spring through winter. Fall colour is not limited to just shrubs. Trees like the northern red oak, the pin oak, Amur maple, sugar maple and red maple can all develop incredible fall colour. Vines like the Virginia creeper are well known for it, too. In case you have no room left in your garden but still want to add some fall spectacle, small perennials like fall asters and Autumn Joy sedum flower from late summer through fall. They are a simple way to keep your garden looking its best right up to snowfall. As the weather looks good for at least the next few weeks I would encourage you all to water your trees and shrubs in well for the upcoming cold season. cells are well hydrated during the cooler months. Besides the burning bushes, I enjoy walking into the nursery and seeing the Tiger Eyes sumacs, which have excellent leaf texture and colour all year combined with a more compact growth habit than their wild cousins. Right now they are a gorgeous orangey-apricot colour. Several varieties of barberries add to the fall display. As their regular coloured leaves die, they develop some bright red and orange undertones. They fit well into any land-

Northern Gateway Pipeline a ‘fascist’ and ‘stupid’ idea

To the Editor: The Northern Gateway Pipeline is clearly the most fascist idea to come from our political leaders since the North American Union. Not one of our federal or provincial politicians is even making a peep about this issue except for political expedience. It is clearly a fascist movement spearheaded by the corporate elites to ensure we stay as slaves to black crack. It is not that our elected leaders have not been reminded constantly about the Gulf of Mexico, Prince William Sound, Red Deer River, the Athabasca River, the tarsands disaster, Iraq, Libya, Ecuador and Nigeria because their constituents are screaming mad about this lunacy. Nobody is listening, though — not Stephen Harper, Thomas Mulcair, Christy Clark, Adrian Dix, David Wilks or Michelle Mungall. It is simply business as usual. Not only is it fascist, it is stupid. What part of turning your gasoline engine on in your garage eventually kills you don’t you understand? Oil is obsolete technology. In today’s advanced, civilized and intelligent society, we have figured out that Mother Earth provides us with micro hydro, solar, geothermal, tidal and wind energy. We have developed advance technologies like biodiesel, magnetic engines, antigravity and radio, yet nobody is talking about developing these wonderful, clean and intelligent ideas. We have batteries that can store enough energy to supply a city bigger than Creston and LED lights that use almost no electricity. You can get enough power to run your house simply by hooking up to your septic tank. Energy is everywhere! Tesla taught us this 90 years ago, yet we are still smoking black crack through a pipe. Well, Mother Earth is starting to punch back now, isn’t she? Investing $400 million into the Northern Gateway Pipeline is like investing $400 million into eighttrack tapes. It’s just dumb. And the word is out about how many jobs this will create and how it will keep the economy. Lies! Everybody knows this is a part-time Band-Aid job designed to keep all the money at the top where it belongs. You want jobs and economic growth? You can start by dismantling all those useless oil refineries and liquefied natural gas plants. Then you can dig up all that obsolete pipeline and clean up the mess that has been created from two generations of abuse and neglect so your grandchildren will have air to breathe and water to drink. We will devlop these wonderful alternatives right here in B.C. Every creek and river can produce electricity that wouldn’t disturb the fish or turn waterways into lakes. All sewage treatment facilities can have biodiesel plants attached to them and all vehicles currently on the road can be converted to run on diesel — easy and simple ideas that can be implemented

today and running in a month. Think about what that would do to our manufacturing industry and local economies. These are the types of ideas I will be suggesting in the 2013 provincial election. You can choose either the New World Order and its ideals or True Democracy, Internet government, and support an idea of governance that will be respectful of the people’s wishes. There is nothing like the farmers’ market To the Editor: I just came from my weekly visit to the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market. As I was as leaving, with my arms loaded with produce, I was called over to one of the booths and asked to leave a comment about any one of the booths’ good service. With joy, I did, but my biggest dilemma was narrowing it down to one booth! So, Len Parkin, who was manning the booth, asked me, “Why don’t you write a letter to the paper and make a comment to that effect?” Here it is. I love the farmers’ market. The service and the products are amazing, and if it’s possible, every year it seems to get better. I’m not sure if it’s because I have gotten to know more of the vendors personally and what they specialize in, or if our soil keeps improving and growing better stuff, or if I’m taking more time to socialize with vendors and customers. It’s probably a combination of the three. Here are some examples of extra special service that I’ve received in just the last few weeks: •One week I bought some cucumbers from one vendor. The next week when I went back, the vendor asked me if my cucumbers were bitter. I said, “Ah, one or two, but that’s OK; it happens sometimes.” The vendor said, “I took them home and had one myself and realized I must have sold some bitter cucumbers. Please let me give you your money back.” I wouldn’t let her, but I did take produce in exchange. •I have had vendors bring me large cases of certain produce that I have requested and hold them for me at their booth. They picked the produce fresh that day. •One vendor has a vegetable that they grow really well and I have told many people about it. Today when I purchased a couple of this particular vegetable, the vendor threw in a couple extra — free — and called it commission. •Last week and again today, different vendors had almost sold out of their particular produce. I got talking with them, and they gave me some of the little they had left over, free. I offered to pay, but they wouldn’t hear of it. Then, it’s like one big party at the market — a great socializing opportunity! Thank you to all those people involved with running the farmers’ market. And, thanks, Len, for giving me the idea to write this letter. Rhonda Barter Creston

Harper is a hypocrite

To the Editor: Our prime minister recently demonstrated the perfect definition of hypocrisy, one day blasting Iran verbally and diplomatically in bizarrely radical and apocalyptic terms, and the next smiling his Cheshire smile while signing a trade agreement with China. China, which invaded and occupied Tibet in 1949 and imposes a devastating program of cultural genocide on the Tibetans and Muslim inhabitants in the west of the country, as well as human rights abuses too numerous and wellknown to list here, is now an even closer friend. I am glad that Mr. Harper was not burned by a Tibetan monk selfimmolating during the ceremony. It takes only a cursory reading of history to know that Iran, which has not attacked another country in hundreds of years, is a victim of the West. Early in the 20th century, a weak Iran was divided by Russia and Britain. This enabled British Petroleum to exploit Iranian oil at a piratical price. When a democratically elected, secular government threw out BP, the CIA overthrew the government of Iran and installed a friendly dictator (the shah) complete with a dreaded secret police. How can Iran forgive or forget the million dead or the many thousands who still suffer Raise funds for from the poison gas attacks (gas manufactured with chemiyour group or cals supplied by Britain, the U.S. and organization. Germany) Call Davewhen to Saddam, supported by the West, invaded? During that war, a organize a U.S. cruiser shot down an Iranian pasBottle senger jet,Drive killing 290 innocent civilians. Tick-tack-toe. Iran has much to fear as she looks to the east and to the west at the neighbors invaded and destroyed by the Western powers. American journal Foreign Affairs had a cover article this spring, “Why Iran Should Get the Bomb”, suggesting an Iranian bomb would bring stability to the region. Countries would leave each other alone. Before we take sides in a terrible war, we need to be very clear on Iran’s policy towards Israel. It does not recognize a theocratic state that illegally occupies Palestinians lands and continually harasses, intimidates and invades its neighbors. It has not made a specific threat, unlike the U.S. and Israel, which have repeatedly threatened unprovoked attacks on Iran. In playing to their base, Iran’s current unfortunate leadership makes incendiary comments about Israel, which we need take no more seriously than American claims to spread democracy. The world knows that it would be suicidal to attack Israel. We demonize the Iranian leadership (hopefully not their wonderful people who are the ones who would do the dying) but you cannot point to one action which one would call crazy. What might it be called when leaders act contrary to the best interests of their own country in the service of a foreign power? Not quite treason, but what? Why would Canada, apparently out of the blue, sever relations with Iran? The only answer can be that Netanyahu picked up the phone and ordered it. To paraphrase Bob Dylan, now I can’t think for you, you have to decide whether Harper and Baird are really on our side. (One more thing: For those of you who care only about the economy, think about this. Iran will fight — hard. Some analysts believe the effect on energy prices of an attack could tip the fragile world economy into depression.) Mike Keeling Erickson

Getting acquainted with the high country

It takes a lot more effort and equipment to get up into the high country in the winter season and even during early spring than it does in summer. So I, like

It was in these conditions that I joined a group of other adventurers on one of the spring hikes in Stagleap Provincial Park up Kootenay Pass. snow would disappear and plant and small animal life would respond to the warm sunlight. In this shaded north exposure, flowers would come later than to the south facing mountain slopes. A year ago, I realized how much of the landscape I was missing because a lot of hiking was done on the south sides of mountains, that is, if the terrain was negotiable. While the north sides of some mountains are treacherous to manoeuvre, many can be hiked. So, last fall, to become better acquainted with mountain landscape, I specifically aimed to hike and explore the north sides and northerly exposures of several mountains that I was somewhat already acquainted with. These were Mount Thompson, and Haystack, Sphinx and Akokli mountains. It was hard to work this out because summer on north, east and level exposures doesn’t happen till late July and early August. And, because the season is so short in the alpine, events are like bang, bang, bang, one right after the other. A botanist acquaintance once told me that to see and study the alpine flower showing, one must visit any given location at least every two weeks. So I aimed to do that and, at the same time, take care of other unrelated responsibilities. It resulted in a tight schedule. The orientation of Mount Thompson and the range, north to south, doesn’t provide vast areas of northerly exposure but there are a few mini north and northeast faces having their own delayed summer. On several of these rock faces where, initially, moisture was still dripping or seeping from crevices and from the base of the rocks, while the ridge was already dry, I found Merten’s and also rusty saxifrage at the prime of flowering. Two weeks later, they were all gone to seed. The seedpods of saxifrages are often as colorful as the flower. They form two or three red “horns” that curve out from each other. (Too technical?) One of these plants occurred somewhat earlier, when moisture was available, on some now dry east slopes. Haystack Mountain has a large meadow that has many characteris-

Ed McMackin

tics of life on a north-facing slope with a later summer than its southfacing exposures. The snow piles up in this meadow and doesn’t melt, some years, till late July. And, because a number of brooks and underground water courses drain into the basin from surrounding mountain slopes, the meadows stay wet for a prolonged time, keeping the area cool and thus retarding the arrival of the vast array of flowers often seen there. But when they do respond to warmth, the meadows become a place comparable to Idaho Peak. I have visited these meadows many times so I made no new acquaintances. But there was one surprise waiting for me. About five years ago, while touring the meadows with a friend, we came upon an alpine white bog orchid in full bloom. It had three flower-laden stalks. But then each year I returned to the meadows after that, I didn’t see any blooms nor did I locate any plants. Survival in the alpine is tough both for plants and animals. The season is short, the soil is often devoid of nutrients, sometimes the snow melts away early and sometimes late, and there are sometimes cold rainy spells and late and early frosts. So plants that grow there are tough. This became strikingly evident to me as I squatted and stared at that bog orchid that I finally found this past summer. There was no evidence that it had bloomed this season. And it may not have bloomed since I last saw it with those pure white blooms. If the snow stayed late it may not have had time to bloom or, perhaps, available nutrients and warmth may only permit it to bloom every five or so years. On south-facing slopes at higher elevations, more available moisture will sometimes increase productivity; however, in reflecting back, where there is sufficient soil, lushness, abundance and diversity are three words I would use in describing north, east and level exposures. This is one aspect that makes our mountain landscape so interesting and beautiful. Ed McMackin is a biologist by profession but a naturalist and hiker by nature. He can be reached at 250-866-5747.

Alliance for literacy helps hundreds of adult learners in the Columbia Basin and Boundary COLUMBIA BASIN ALLIANCE FOR LITERACY

Every year throughout the Columbia Basin and Boundary regions, hundreds of citizens work with literacy instructors and tutors to improve their reading, writing, math, English language and computer

skills. These adults are seeking out Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL, a Columbia Basin and Boundary non-profit literacy organization) programs to improve their skills, knowledge and ability so they can participate more fully in their lives and communities. The program benefits and the learners’ commitment are having a positive impact in towns and villages in the region. “We work closely with libraries, schools, colleges, businesses, and other community partners to develop, promote and deliver adult literacy and learning services,” said

Ali Wassing, CBAL Executive Director. “The Canadian Council on Learning reported that 60 per cent of Canadians do not have the necessary literacy skills to manage their health adequately. We know the health benefits individuals and communities gain when a commitment is made to life-long learning.” The adult literacy and life skills international survey found approximately 40 per cent of Canadians need greater knowledge and skills to effectively find and use basic written information for daily work and living tasks. “Research shows us the need for increased adult literacy,” says Betty Knight, CBAL’s East Kootenay regional program manager. “We see the effects on individuals, families and communities, and are committed to helping people change their lives through small group classes, one-to-one tutoring and services at our centres.” “Our learners gain much-needed skills in reading, writing and speaking English,” said Linda Steward, Creston community literacy co-ordinator. “They also find friendship and emotional support to combat the isolation immigrants experience. It is so rewarding to see them start with little or no English and, within a few years, be working, joining community organizations and settling into a happy full life in our valley.” Learners expressing their appreciation said: “Your teacher is very good teacher. I learn lots how to speak, to write and to

read English.” “The ESL class helps me to practice my English and my tutor helps me with many things in my life and I have the conversations with her.” Selkirk College works with CBAL and the Kootenay Family Place in Castlegar to bring high school upgrading courses to parents.

“Our learners gain muchneeded skills in reading, writing and speaking English.” Linda Steward Creston community literacy co-ordinator

“This program is such a pleasure to be part of,” said Allison Alder, Chair of Selkirk College’s school of academic upgrading and development. “While instructors help parents brush up on math, learn a new biology concept or polish their writing skills, they can relax knowing their children are cared for nearby. Bringing learning opportunities to people, where and when they are comfortable, is community learning at its finest.” “The program gave me an opportunity to complete my schooling by providing

excellent childcare, career counseling and an awesome tutor,” said Charity Barbour, a past ABE program participant. “But most importantly, I received positive encouragement to follow through with my career plans.” In Cranbrook, CBAL partners with College of the Rockies to offer the young parent education program. Young parents, who face multiple barriers, can complete their high school education, and, focus on learning new life, work and parenting skills. “Learners make new and sustaining friendships, support each other, and, with improved self-esteem are empowered to move on to vocational, academic or employment opportunities when they graduate,” said Katherine Hough, Cranbrook community literacy co-ordinator. Literacy statistics affecting our communities show that 26 per cent of Canadians with the lowest literacy skill levels are unemployed, 80 per cent of those with low literacy skills earn less than $27,000 a year, and 33 per cent of employers report challenges because some staff need better literacy skills. On October 11 support literacy in your community by taking part in Black Press and CBAL’s Reach-A-Reader campaign. Buy your local newspaper from a volunteer who will be out in the town. All proceeds raised will go to support literacy programs in your community. By learning together, we will grow strong together.

Thursday, October 11

The Creston Valley Advance and the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy are partnering on a great new event for Creston and area. On Thursday, October 10, some of Creston’s highest profile people will be out on the street with our newspaper asking for donations to help support literacy initiatives in our community. Along with your donation, we will give you a copy of your community newspaper for FREE (plus there might be a few extra promos to go along with that). Absolutely all funds raised from the day will go towards CBAL and all funds will stay in the community in which they are raised to support literacy programs in our community. tion campuses as students reconnect with friends, meet new instructors and settle back into campus life. As the BC NDP Opposition critic for advanced education, I particularly enjoy this time of year as I travel the province speaking with students about the issues on top of their minds. To date, no one has asked for help with their first mid-term. Rather, everyone wants to talk

to me about student finances, not surprisingly since students’ costs and how they are going to pay for them has become their number one concern according to national studies. There’s tuition, books, fees, rent, utilities, transportation, mac and cheese, and the occasional night out. More and more students also have to pay childcare and feed their kids. In the last 10 years under the Liberals, tuition in B.C. has doubled. At the same time, B.C. continues to have the highest interest in Canada on student loans while being the only province that fails to offer students financial needs-based grants. The result at the end of a four-year program is an average $27,000 debt, and this doesn’t include credit card debt

or lines of credit with private lenders. Debt is not for the few either. Fifty-four per cent of B.C. students have a student loan debt. Recently, Sean Leslie from CKNW radio asked me if students struggling to make ends meet wasn’t a rite of passage. Historically, that may have been the case, but the reality is that today’s young generations are much worse off than their parents. A recent article by Paul Kershaw in the Province discusses this very point and notes student debt is “markedly higher” for today’s generation. High usage rates at campus food banks is also a sign of increasing student poverty. Compare that with campuses not even having a food bank 30 years ago. Eighty percent of students work either part- or full-time to stay afloat, and say that their financial stresses are impacting their studies. Part of this stress reflects students’ purchasing

power being considerably less than when their parents went to school. The average Canadian minimum wage in 1976 was $10.50 in today’s dollars. That’s more than today’s minimum wage in B.C. Students have to shell out more to go to school, more for rent, more for food and are getting paid less than their parents, all this at a time when 80 per cent of jobs will require some level of post-secondary education by 2017. Financial stress being the reality for the vast majority of students, many banks, schools and columnists do their best to advise students on how to survive the debt. As someone who continues to survive my $20,000 student debt, I would also like to add my advice. It’s easy. Go vote. Tuition, loan interest rates, grants, minimum wage, rent controls — all of these are decided by government. That’s why Quebec

students took to the streets, and that’s why young people need to show up at the polls. Every vote is counted, and when young people don’t show up to vote, their issues are ignored. The BC NDP has put $100 million on the table for financial needsbased grants. Other parties will put forward their ideas for students too. Students can make sure they have their say on these proposals by showing up to a polling station on May 14, 2013. So when you see me on B.C.’s campuses, tell me you plan to do something to make students’ lives better. Tell me you’re voting. Thunder Cats earn season’s first out-of town win BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

Friday night saw the Creston Valley Thunder Cats’ second away game of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s 2012-2013 season, which resulted in their first road win, after losing 3-2 in Kimberley on Sept. 15. The Thunder Cats beat the Grand Forks Border Bruins 4-1, after playing hard against the revitalized team, which has been near the bottom of the standings for a couple of years. “They’ve got a pretty competitive team this year,” said head coach Josh Hepditch. Newcomer Zach Straza was in goal for the Thunder Cats, and blocked 31 Border Bruins shots. “He kept us in the game and gave us the chance to win,” said Hepditch. He also had high praise for Darcy Flaherty, who scored the Thunder Cats’ first goal unassisted in the second period, and an unassisted, shorthanded empty-netter in the third. Flaherty’s goals were followed by, respectively, goals by Brady Ward and Kevin Warwick, with Grand Forks’s only goal coming at the end of the second period. On Friday and Saturday, the soccer teams, coached by Bill Ferguson, Todd Hawton, Mike Fischer and Aaron Gregory, played in Nakusp. The junior boys won the tournament for the third year in a row, beating Midway 3-2, losing to Grand Forks 2-1 and beating Nakusp 7-0, and then beating Kimberley 2-1 in the final. The senior boys lost 3-2 to Golden in a shootout, 2-1 to Keremeos and 3-2 to South Slocan’s Mt. Sentinel Secondary School.

checking spread around the team, with a game misconduct by Scott Butters — allowed the team to practice some shorthanded play, with Grand Forks scoring once on 11 power plays. “Our penalty kill was extremely good Friday night,” said Hepditch. The winning didn’t last through Saturday’s home game, which the Thunder Cats lost 3-1 to the Nelson Leafs. “It was not one of our best outings, that’s for sure,” said Hepditch. “We got outworked and outbattled in our own building.” The only Thunder Cats goal was by Trevor Hanna in the mid-second period, although eight power plays provided

other chances the team didn’t capitalize on. The Leafs held off scoring until the third period, when they netted three out of 19 shots on goalie Michael Hails. “That was kind of a test for us. Unfortunately, we didn’t pass the test. They play a very good road game. We didn’t bring the effort we needed.” This weekend, the Thunder Cats play three games, hosting the Columbia Valley Rockies on Friday and the Princeton Posse on Sunday, and travelling to Fernie to take on the Ghostriders on Saturday. The first two are particularly important, with the Rockies leading the KIJHL’s Eddie Mountain Division with seven points and the Ghostriders tied

PUBLIC NOTICE

RECALL AND INITIATIVE ACT

This notice is published pursuant to section 4 of the Recall and Initiative Act. Approval in principle has been granted on an application for an initiative petition. The petition will be issued to proponent Dana Larsen on Monday, November 19, 2012 and signature sheets must be submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer by Monday, February 18, 2013. The Title of the Initiative is: An initiative to amend the Police Act. Summary of Initiative: The initiative draft Bill entitled, “Sensible Policing Act proposes to amend the Police Act to no longer use provincial police resources on the enforcement of current laws in relation to simple possession and use of cannabis by adults. The draft law would prohibit the use of provincial police resources for this purpose, would require police to report in detail to the Minister of Justice any actual use of resources for this purpose and why it was necessary, and require the Minister to publish that report. The Bill also proposes that the Province would call upon the Federal Government to repeal the federal prohibition on cannabis, or give British Columbia an exemption, such that British Columbia is able to tax and regulate cannabis similar to the regulation of alcohol and tobacco. As well it proposes that British Columbia shall establish a Provincial Commission to study the means and requirements necessary for the province to establish a legal and regulated model for the production and use of cannabis by adults. Last, the Bill would make non-lawful possession and use of cannabis by minors an offence similar to possession and use of alcohol.

Initiative Advertising: Individuals or organizations who sponsor initiative advertising, other than the proponent and registered opponents, must register with the Chief Electoral Officer before they conduct or publish initiative advertising. the Raptors, to Creston to play at the Snoring Sasquatch on Sept. 29. Since 1976, Hawk has been gracing stages, street corners and subway stations across Canada. From Toronto to Terrace, he brings his heartfelt vocals and buzz-saw guitar style to the fore, evoking a potent energy based on the power of love, folk tradition and good country music. Backed by the Raptors, Roger Luckey and Michael Gifford, the lineup fills out into a full complement with mandolin, string bass, dobro and good harmony singing. Gifford recently retired from “a lifetime of teaching music in

Idaho and B.C. public schools. He often performs with music groups from Nelson, Spokane and Portland as the bass player. Luckey started off playing when he was 13. His natural love of music took him on to learn guitar, dobro, mandolin and banjo. He has been performing since the 1970s as a folk singer-songwriter, and multi instrumentalist, accompanying square dance, folk and blues acts. Doors open at 7 p.m.; the show begins at 8. Tickets are $8 in advance at Kingfisher Used Books, Black Bear Books and the Snoring Sasquatch, and $10 at the door.

Manzik playing at Sirdar Pub SIRDAR PUB

Billy Manzik is back in the Creston Valley as he and his band swing back south on his return trip to California. Some of you may remember his visit earlier this year, but make no mistake, they’re worth seeing live again — and you can on Oct. 5 at the Sirdar Pub. Manzik’s all-original song list is an extensive tribute to his folk, rock and rootsy blues sound. Soulful and sometimes haunting, his melodies are both toe tapping and thought provoking. Guitars meld with organ, while a lap steel also adds to the upbeat compositions. If we’re really lucky, the upright bass will also make its appearance. As a Thunderbird, Ont., native, Manzik is no stranger to travelling. He has recently been touring with Lisa Edberg in Oregon and California, since recording an album in Hollywood, assisted by producer-mixer-engineer Brad Haehnel (Nelly Furtado, Moulin Rouge soundtrack) earlier in 2012. He and his band continue to make waves throughout Western Canada and the U.S.A. The show starts at 9 p.m. with an $8 cover.

Musings of a 2013 PCSS grad BY RYLAN LAVALLEE

As we reach the halfway point of September and fall begins to settle in, so too do students attending Prince Charles Secondary School. They settle into their classes, into waking up before noon, into sports and clubs and other school-year activities. For most, it’s a year like any other, a different grade, but otherwise similar. However, for around 90 students, this year is special; 2013 will mark their final year of secondary education, their last few months of high school before embarking on their lives. Many will move away, seeking further schooling or careers, while others may decide to stay and live in the valley they grew up in. Until June, however, we will be attending school as usual. Some things will change, though. Students are driving — first cars and all the freedom that come with them. We are the oldest in the school now, enjoying the respect from the younger students that accompanies seniority. And perhaps most exciting of all, many are searching for a path to follow after graduation.

It is an intimidating experience, trying to decide what it is we want to do after graduation. College? A job? Maybe even travelling. The decision is made all the harder considering the price of attending a postsecondary school, or the condition of the job market. Rent and other costs have risen, and adults under 25 who remain at home have risen to 43 per cent. These issues are further compounded with the cloud hovering over our heads, the knowledge that with an aging population, more pressure is going to be on us to be the best we can be, to be there for our parents and grandparents. These are all things that we will soon have to confront once school is out and we are forced to face a less carefree adult life. But looking around my class, at peers I know well, some I have been seeing almost every day for 12 years, I am filled with confidence for our generation. We have our flaws — maybe we can be lazy sometimes, or a little disorganized — but when the grind is on I believe our generation can be just as hardworking, just as capable and just as advancing as those before us. So to the

See your veterinarian for equine dental care

Dr. Robert McLeod, B. Sc, DVM Dr. John Pfeffer, B. Sc, DVM Dr. Leanne Sackney, B. Sc, DVM Dr. Emma Davis, B. Sc, DVM

Professional dental care is an essential part of animal health. This complex treatment can involve anesthesia and pain control, surgery and various medical and reconstructive procedures. Trust the care of your animal to a registered veterinarian.

for horses began at a very young age and has been the primary focus of my I would do soley equine work when I graduated, so in school I chose to do all of the M ylife.passion I thought I saved up and bought my first horse at age eleven and still have him today along with equine electives and filled my practical year with mostly equine rotations. I stayed longer another gelding, a broodmare, and another leased mare that I am hoping to get my next prospects out of this coming year. I rode just about every discipline of riding growing up but dressage and jumping are my favorites. School came pretty easy for me as a child so I decided to become a vet around the age of ten with the thought of combining my academic ability with my love of horses. I was in Pony Club and 4-H for many years and got a good basic knowledge of horse care through those clubs.

G

etting the acceptance letter from veterinary school after several years of college and univeristy in order to complete all of the prerequisites was one of the best days of my life. I understood how competitive it was and becoming a vet was absolutely the only career I was interested in so it was pretty stressful wondering if I would ever get in, and therefore a huge relief when it finally happened!

Dr. Emma Davis and friends

in Saskatoon the summer before my final year doing a six-week equine rotation that included medicine, surgery, and field service in order to get more cases during the busier time of year. This enabled me to get much more experience with reproductive work, foal medicine, general medicine, surgery, field work, and a lot more training with equine dental work.

I graduated from the Western College W hen of Veterinary Medicine in 2011 I started work

with an equine vet in the West Kootenays and did strictly equine work for the first few months. Come late summer, the equine work slowed down and it was time to look for small animal or mixed work. That is when I approached Dr. McLeod and was very lucky to get on at the Creston Veterinary Clinic where we see all animal species. I really like Creston and I love the clinic and the staff so I hope I will be working here for a very long time.

Shoppers campaign raising funds for maternity ward

health of all Canadian women in body, mind and spirit. National in scope, yet locally-based, the annual Tree of Life campaign offers patients, customers and employees the opportunity to donate directly to the organizations that make a difference in their own communities. Since 2002, the Tree of Life campaign has raised more than $17 million for Canadian health charities. In 2012, over 450 women’s health charities across Canada will benefit from the campaign’s proceeds with 100 per cent of funds staying in the community where they are raised.

SHOPPERS DRUG MART

The Creston Valley Hospital maternal care unit and Creston’s Shoppers Drug Mart are partnering in an effort to raise funds in support of women’s whole health in Creston through the 11th annual Tree of Life campaign. The four-week fundraising campaign, running from Sept. 29-Oct. 26 at over 1,200 Shoppers Drug Mart stores, will harvest essential funding to directly support Creston Valley Hospital maternal care unit’s resources and programming initiatives. “Community fundraising initiatives allow us to provide women with the resources they need to improve their health in mind, body and spirit,” said nurse Carolyn Hawton, patient care coordinator at the Creston Valley Hospital. “From Sept. 29 through Oct. 26, we encourage everyone to get involved in women’s health and support Creston Valley Hospital maternal care unit directly through Shoppers Drug Mart’s Tree of Life fundraising campaign.” Each fall, the campaign provides customers with the opportunity to purchase and personalize a Tree of Life icon, which are prominently displayed on the Tree of Life in all participating stores. Make a difference and support women in communities across Canada by visiting any local participating Shoppers Drug Mart store and purchase a leaf for a loonie, a butterfly for $5, an acorn for $10 or a cardinal for $50.

Creston Mayor Ron Toyota. The Shoppers Drug Mart Tree of Life campaign is a four-week program held across Canada and is one of the leading partnership programs of the Shoppers Drug Mart Women platform — the company’s commitment to improving the

Evelyn Joyce Swenson (nee Higens) of Creston, BC, passed away peacefully and quietly at Crest View Care Village September 16, 2012, at age 78. Ev was born at Pouce Coupe, BC, November 23, 1933. On July 3, 1952, she married the love of her life, Duane Arthur Swenson (who pre-deceased her August 21, 1999). On his return, he married the love of his life, Jean Ross on April 30, 1948 and they began their life together in Saskatchewan before moving to Creston in 1956. Roy was employed as an automotive mechanic at Universal Motors, Valley Chrysler and was also employed as a millwright at Crestbrook Sawmill. He owned and operated Rainbow Motors in Erickson and concluded his working years at the BC Department of Highways. Roy was a member of the Trinity United Church, Royal Canadian Legion Br#29, Swan Valley Swingers and the Creston Golf Club. He was always willing to support community projects such as the aquatic center fund raising and the Blossom Valley Festival. He enjoyed golďƒžng, ďƒžshing, dancing, camping and reading. Jean and Roy enjoyed over ďƒžfteen winters in Yuma, AZ with many of their Creston friends, and made many new friends. Many people were recipients of his colourful lawn chairs. He kept ďƒžt with many miles of walking and riding his exercise bike every day. What Roy enjoyed most was spending time with the love of his life Jean, and many celebrations with his family. Roy was predeceased by his parents Hazel and Howard; brothers Edward and Earl; and sisters Marjorie, Evelyn, Arlene, Lelia, Bertha and Edith. Roy will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 64 years Jean; children Gwen (Glenn), Ken (Lorraine), Beverly (Tim); grandchildren Barry (Lucy), Blaine (Kari), Sam, Maddie, Kieran and Devon; great-grandchildren Cohen, Aurora, Bruce and Amy; brothers Lloyd and Gorden (Kay); sister Edna, and many friends. The Funeral Service was held on Monday September 24, 2012 at Creston Rotacrest Hall with Rev. Shelley Stickel-Miles ofďƒžciating. Interment followed at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erickson, BC. Friends wishing to make a memorial tribute in Roy’s name may do so to Prostate Cancer Foundation BC #4 – 17918 – 55th Ave., Surrey, BC V3S 6C8
