Amidst the semitrailer trucks and traffic whizzing by along a stretch of the mainly industrial Byrne Road in South Burnaby, listen carefully and you might hear a few contented snorts. That would be Chop and Bacon, two Tamworth Berkshire cross pigs that are now making a three-acre patch of long-neglected farmland home. They’re also playing a major role in returning the land back to its farming roots.

Farm manager Julia Smith, 41, and her partner, Ludo Ferrari, started leasing the property from its owners, a local Hindu temple, back in the spring. And already there have been a myriad of changes. The little white farmhouse turned out to be inhabited by “crackhead squatters.” After spending four months evicting them, they entered to find the house’s foundation was pretty well gone, the roof was leaking, and it was infested with rats and black mould. Down came the house. “We had to bring in 14 dump trucks of gravel

so the equipment could get in,” said Smith. “The ground was so wet everything was sinking.” In the seven years since it was a full-time farm the land has been taken over by weeds, including highly invasive ones such as quackgrass that are extremely difficult to remove. Being an organic farm, herbicides are a no-no. So apart from being raised for food, Chop and Bacon also earn their keep by digging up and eating the quackgrass and other weeds. Indeed, the clearest patch of land

here is within the solar-powered electric fence they’re penned inside. Smith certainly shows her appreciation. Along with being fed donated fruit and vegetable waste from a local supermarket and whey from nearby Avalon Dairy (a protein source), the pigs get lots of belly rubs and hugs. They respond in turn with contented grunts and friendly nuzzles. “I think I may have the happiest pigs in the world,” Smith said with a laugh.

Burnaby’s Community Heritage Commission has been recognized with a Heritage BC Award for its oral history project, that resulted in about 100 hours of audio recordings being digitized and made available online. The recordings, interviews conducted in the 1970s and ’80s with Burnaby pioneers such as former Burnaby reeve William Pritchard, Florence Hart Godwin and Blythe and Violet Eagles, were originally done on analogue audio tape, which was deteriorating, making them almost unplayable. Now that they’ve been digitized, they’re up on the city’s Heritage Burnaby website where anyone can listen to them over the Internet. The commission received a Heritage BC Award of Honour for the “effort, care and commitment demonstrated in the completion of this important project,” according to a report from city archivist Arilea Sill. The award will be presented Oct. 19 at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. please see OrAL, A12

After the success of their first effort last spring, the Burnaby Heights Neighbourhood Association and Burnaby Public Library are hosting another History in the Heights talk on Thursday, Oct. 4, 7 to 8 p.m. at McGill library branch. The talk will be largely a repeat of last spring’s event, when so many people showed up many had to be turned away, said Mary Briggs of the neighbourhood association. She stressed pre-registration is required because the space can only accommodate up to 60 people before running afoul of fire regulations. The talk, to be given by Burnaby city archivist Arilea Sill and Burnaby Village Museum curator Lisa Codd, will include archival photos of the Heights neighbourhood contrasted with today. “It’s really more about the

early settlers in the Burnaby Heights area, who they were and what they did to settle here,” said Briggs. It’s an old neighbourhood where many who grew up there still live in the area, she noted. But at the same time, many don’t know about its history. “Before I moved to the area I had no idea it was one of the early settling areas of the Lower Mainland.” In fact, at one point, the area north of Hastings and Boundary Road was touted by one real estate promoter— who built the 1909 Overlynn

mansion next to the Seton Villa seniors tower—as Burnaby’s answer to Vancouver’s Shaughnessy. That is, until the First World War got in the way and plans fell apart. Sill and Codd will provide background to what’s in the Heights today, and tips on how to research the history of homes, buildings and businesses in the area. The talk is free but space is limited and pre-registration is required, at McGill library branch (4595 Albert St.), at 604-299-8955 or www.bpl.bc.ca/events/mcgill.

ADRIAN RAESIDE:

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:

River stewards Creeks and rivers support an interdependent web of life and we damage them at our peril. For much of the last century, we have done everything imaginable to destroy these critical waterways — covering them over, altering their course, polluting them, diminishing their capacity to support life. It’s a wonder we still have functioning creeks and rivers to which exhausted salmon return to spawn. Nature’s resilience can, in large part, explain why our creeks and rivers still teem with life. But there have been efforts made over the years to improve things and some humans deserve credit. Thanks to streamkeepers and other stewards, there are more kilometres of life-supporting habitat along these waterways and more fish in the once sterile creeks. Thanks to wise lawmakers, there are more regulations requiring industry to minimize the impact of development and resource extraction on waterways, and cities are taking more responsibility and using best practices to protect waterways in their jurisdictions, too. Even the public is getting involved by cleaning up garbage during the Shoreline Clean-up, removing invasive species, planting native species and raising cain when problems arise. Last week’s cleanup in New Westminster showed that many people still consider our rivers a garbage can, turning up everything from building waste and tires to a kitchen stove. As World Rivers Day approaches, we should make time to learn about our nearest creeks and rivers and take a walk along them, observing how they still bear life despite their proximity to industry and development. True, they are under threat, but if we become responsible stewards, they have a greater chance of surviving into the next century. —Black Press

The ‘freedom’ of four wheels When you’re 16 or 17, how do you spell freedom? C-A-R. When you are a parent of same, how do you spell inconvenience and worry? See above. I was prompted to think about this the other day when picking up my daughter and her friend from volleyball practice. Her friend’s mom also hitched a ride, since she was without a vehicle. Seems her son is now a driver. And as with many things in life, what is an advantage for one is a disadvantage for another. In this case, he gets wheels ... and his mom goes without. She said it was actually a plus, occasionally, since he could do the taxi thing for his sister, and other errands. This time next year, my daughter will be tantalizingly close to that magic age of 16, and soon after, little doubt, a driving test. Teens have it a lot tougher nowadays, what with all the restrictions on licensing. The ‘freedom’ is initially rather limited.

Andrew Holota Compared to today’s rules, my entry into the world of wheels almost 40 years ago was a slamdunk. Pass the tests, and that was it, you were a driver. No L’s or N’s, or supervision. Just bring home the paperwork, and beg for the keys to the family car. And woe betide your sorry keister if you did something as stupid as the young drivers who got their cars impounded after getting caught excessively speeding along Highway 1 in Chilliwack, or smoking the tires. Eventually, constantly borrowing the family car convinced my dad that I ought to have one of my own. It was a Datsun 710. White, with a gawdawful red stripe along both sides – no other vehicle like it in all of Abbotsford

(maybe all of Canada). I now suspect he chose that car because if I did something idiotic with it, everyone would instantly know who the idiot was. So me and idiocy were pretty much strangers, at least with driving, anyway... That and the fact that it’s pretty hard to go street racing with an anemic four-cylinder that would be hard-pressed to do 100 kilometres per hour downhill with a stiff tail wind. Apart from the financial realities, I figure dad chose that car for those reasons, too. But hey, it was a set of reliable wheels. A cheap tape deck and a couple of homemade speakers made recognizable noise, and life was very good. I could finally spell freedom, and so could my friends. A one-passenger-only rule would have been a major bummer, since few of my buddies had a car. I was the guy with the ride, Clyde. Concerts, movies, visiting, cruising, and parking. Oh yeah, the parking.... (And I don’t mean next to a meter).

After graduation, the little Datsun was the packed-to-thegunnels “crew truck” for four of us on a government grant clearing hiking trails in the Chilliwack Valley, where we lived in a youth hostel. It was one of the best summers of my teen years, impossible without the car, and an unrestricted driver’s licence. So, I do appreciate the frustration of new – mostly teen – drivers, who face all sorts of licensing hurdles I didn’t experience. But then the dad side of me kicks in, and I think of my girl, who will soon be of driving age, as well as riding around in friends’ cars. If those tougher rules keep her safer, and improve the driving behaviour of other teens behind the steering wheels of often ridiculously over-powered cars, then that’s a fine thing. And in due course, maybe I’ll start looking for a 1975 Datsun in decent shape – a white one, with a big red stripe on the sides. Andrew Holota is editor of the Abbotsford News.

Argument ‘floated’ by Kinder Morgan flawed Re: Listening and learning keys to working together (Guest Column, NewsLeader, Sept. 26) Ian Anderson is wrong when he says “The bitumen in our pipeline is less dense than salt or fresh water, at a maximum density of 0.94, and will float if there’s a spill.” In a spill, upon release from a high-pressure pipeline, the volatile condensate diluent immediately begins to evaporate, a process called “weathering,” leaving behind an increasingly dense raw bitumen with a density, or more correctly, specific gravity, of more than one which means it will sink in fresh water, and parts of it will even sink in sea water. This is the type of PR dishonesty that makes the public, and oil and gas engineers with a chemical engineering degree like me, unhappy with Kinder Morgan’s or Enbridge’s pipeline proposals and marine shipping proposals. A POSITIVE DEVELOPMENT ON KINGSWAY Re: Motel plans raise hopes (NewsLeader, Sept. 21) Burnaby City Council made the right decision in allowing for the redevelopment projects along Kingsway and supported by the Kingsway-Imperial Neighbourhood Association. Residents have long been concerned about the state of the sites in question, and the redevelopment plan promises to revitalize an important part of one of the main thoroughfares of the city. The decision to create a mixed-use project will once again highlight Burnaby’s commitment to creating sustainable communities that rely less on our vehicles and more on fostering strong community links and highlighting local conveniences essential to building a strong and vibrant neighbourhood. Beyond the benefits to the economy in redeveloping these

properties, there are domestic benefits that will not receive nearly enough notice and should be applauded. We live in a region with one of the highest costs of living in Canada, and that is fuelled in part by our high housing costs. Increasing the stock of housing, even slightly, will have a very real effect on the market and will bring in new families to call Burnaby their new home. The removal of the Intercity Motel will also help make the streets in that community safer for children. Well done city council, this was a wonderful decision with lasting impacts. I hope that the success of this development proposal will impress upon council the need for more of these redevelopments to be approved. Trevor Ritchie Burnaby

WHO GOES DOWN WITH THEIR SHIP? It seems like it’s been awhile since I last wrote, but then not

too much has been happening that is really all that riveting. And, quite frankly, what little news that is worthy of comment has been taken on by other news watchers. Tom Fletcher, for example, pointed out on Sept. 19 (Stakes go up in B.C. gas gamble, BC Views) the inherent danger of depending on one industry (the natural gas sector) for a good chunk of the government’s revenue or, more to the point, of relying too much on the (dare we say, self-serving?) optimistic forecasts of an industry that has been experiencing a downturn for the last three years. Shame on them for misleading our government. But, after successive budget deficits, shame on the government for continuing to listen. On the other side of the page, Garth Evans bemoaned the fact that every time a Liberal MLA announces he/she is not standing for re-election, it is reported as another rat leaving a sinking ship. It’s not quite clear to me if

he objects to equating Liberal politicians with “rats” or describing the BC Liberal government as a “sinking ship” or both. Be that as it may, he has a point. It’s bad imagery. Besides, abandoning ship is an act of survival. No one in their right mind wants to go down with the ship, except perhaps the captain, of course. Bill Brassington Burnaby

Councils call for end to pot prohibition Tom Fletcher

tfletcher@blackpress.ca

VICTORIA – After a passionate debate and a close vote, delegates to the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention passed a motion Wednesday calling on the federal government to decriminalize marijuana. The UBCM placed major emphasis on the debate this year, staging a debate Monday featuring former B.C. attorney general Geoff Plant, in favour of loosening pot laws, and University of the Fraser Valley criminologist Darryl Plecas opposed. After a lineup of speakers on the impact of marijuana grow ops on communities and crime impact, a show of hands by hundreds of delegates supported the call for decriminalization. Metchosin councillor Moralea Milne reminded delegates that Plant termed pot prohibition “a disastrous and expensive failure of public policy.” She said more than 500,000 B.C. residents have smoked pot, but she doesn’t support its use. “Personally I’d rather have a martini, and I’m allowed to, because we changed that very wrong prohibition stance that we had,” Milne said. Port Moody councillor Bob Elliott said his “quaint, safe city” has seen three gang-related murders in the past six months. He pleaded for support for decriminalization. Coquitlam councillor Terry O’Neill called decriminalization “the worst of all worlds,” protecting people from simple possession charges while leaving large-scale growing and sales in the hands of criminals. twitter.com/tomfletcherbc

Oral project moving forward

A VALUABLE PHOTO?

Mike O’Donahue found this old wedding picture while walking on a trail at about 2:30 p.m. in Central Park on Sunday, Sept. 23 and is hoping to return it to its owner. It hadn’t been there long, he says, as they had just passed by that same spot a half hour before. It was found on the trail that runs along the west side of the pitch and putt. The picture is about 2”x2”. If you know who it belongs to you can email Mike at cowboyzero@hotmail. com, or contact the NewsLeader.

Meanwhile, the project will move into its second phase—conducting and recording new interviews for posterity. While the first series of interviews focused mainly on Burnaby in the 1930s and life during the Depression, and the subsequent film project From the Heart— The Freeman Legacy created hours of interview footage looking at life for Burnaby citizens during the war years, it’s now time to

Over the next several months, 20 to 30 longtime Burnaby residents will be solicited to share their stories of growing up in the city during the late 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. “These years marked the most dramatic economic boom in the City’s history: with its abundance of undeveloped land adjacent to the metropolis of Vancouver, Burnaby was a

The relationship between development and transportation is even stronger in Burnaby than most places. In 1891, Burnaby was an unincorporated area between the cities of New Westminster and Vancouver. When an electric railway was built to connect these two metropolises, the line travelled through present-day Burnaby, mainly following the route of today’s SkyTrain Expo Line. By 1892 the Municipality of Burnaby was incorporated in response to the railway. The first council meetings were held in the boarding house for the workers from the powerhouse where electricity for the rail line was Lisa Codd generated. It seems fitting that while Burnaby is celebrating its 120th birthday this month, the Burnaby Village Museum is participating through an event that’s all about transportation. “Burnaby in Motion” is a special opening of the museum on Saturday, Sept. 29 and Sunday, Sept. 30, from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The event features vintage and modern-day riding toys, transportation-related crafts and vintage buses from the Transit Museum Society. TraiNgang will be on site with their model railway display, and visitors who come by bike can use the secure parking services of BEST’s Bicycle Valet Service. Live family entertainment is planned all day, with everything from saxophones and accordions to folktales and a street theatre act that features a miniature stage on the back of a vintage bicycle. Don’t miss the chance to ride the carousel, and also to visit the restored Interurban 1223 tram, that was once part of an electric railway network that served the region from Chilliwack to North Vancouver and places in between. Check out www.burnaby.ca/celebrate120 for a list of other Burnaby 120 events, including activities at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts and Burnaby Arts Gallery taking place the same dates and times as Burnaby in Motion. Lisa Codd is the curator at the Burnaby Village Museum.

Cornish sorry for mooning

OPEN HOUSE DIRECTORY

Former St. Thomas More Knights running back Jon Cornish has apologized for what’s being called his ‘Moon over Mosaic’ showing during the Calgary Stampeders’ 30-25 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders last Sunday. Cornish, who leads the Canadian Football League in rushing this season, is reported to have pulled down his pants and mooned Roughriders’ fans at Mosaic Stadium at Taylor Field who had been taunting him. At a press conference in Calgary on Monday, Cornish, the son of an Anglican minister, apologized to head coach John Hufnagel, his teammates, the Stampeder organization and fans as well as the Roughriders. “The incident was a mistake on my part,” he told reporters. “I definitely took things too far and it reflects poorly on the organization. “It was a bad call on my part. It was an extreme lack of judgment.” Cornish was expected to be fined by both the team and the league. On his Twitter account after the game, Cornish wrote, “Lol gotta love the rider fans calling out my equipment adjustment on the sideline. They mad I’m not mad.” Hufnagel didn’t take it so lightly. “I think you see how disappointed Jon is in himself,” Hufnagel told the gathering. “Once he fully realized the repercussions of it all. I’ve had a chat with Jon about it. He knows my feelings about it, he knows our president Lyle Bauer’s feelings about it.

“I’m not making excuses for Jon. I’m very disappointed for Jon Cornish. He is a young man that likes to enjoy things … But he took something way too far and it needs to be dealt with.” After giving up 159 rushing yards to Cornish earlier in the season, the Riders held him to just 67 on Sunday. Despite the low output, Cornish leads the league with 947 rushing yards, 128 more than second place Kory Sheets of Saskatchewan. He is on track to become the first Canadian to lead the CFL in rushing since former Simon Fraser University star Orville Lee did it in 1988 playing for the Ottawa Rough Riders.

Greyhound struggles with B.C. rules Tom Fletcher

CHOICEquotes

Black Press

Greyhound Canada is losing millions on its B.C. operations because of rigid provincial rules that require minimum bus trips on inter-city routes regardless of passenger demand. Minimum daily service levels are set by the provincially appointed Passenger Transportation Board. For Vancouver to Kamloops, and on the Trans Canada Highway at Golden, for example, Greyhound is required to run four buses each way, seven days a week. “You have a minimum frequency that you have to run on every corridor, really regardless of whether you’re carrying 20 people or five people on each schedule,” said Stuart Kendrick, senior vice president of Greyhound Canada. Kendrick said the company lost $14 million on its B.C. operations in 2011, and previous years have seen similar

losses. He has written to Transportation Minister Mary Polak asking the B.C. government to follow the lead of other provinces and deregulate bus service so it can be kept alive. Polak said she is aware that B.C. service is at risk, and ministry staff are working on options. “It’s obvious from what they’re saying that they need to make adjustments, or they’re going to have to pull out of the whole thing,” Polak said. The company has applied to the board to reduce service on B.C. routes, but not drop any routes entirely. Kendrick said the rules don’t allow adjustments to reflect lighter traffic on certain days of the week, or seasonal adjustments. Manitoba changed its regulations in July to allow flexible schedules. Alberta

deregulated inter-city bus routes in 2011, allowing bus companies to enter or exit a route with 30 days’ notice. Some routes have been abandoned as a result, as urbanization and changing travel habits have led to declines in rural ridership. In New Brunswick, rigid rules prompted the only inter-city bus line to shut down entirely. Kendrick said the B.C. rules are not only inflexible, but the application process takes too long. The company is required to advertise any route change in affected communities, and may need to hold public meetings as well. Polak said the government may be able to change regulations rather than amend legislation, which would have to wait until the B.C. legislature resumes in January.

‘Crucial time in the history of residential construction’

GVHBA to welcome new CEO The Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association has announced the appointment of Bob de Wit as its new chief executive officer, replacing current CEO Peter Simpson who is retiring at the end of October. “I am honoured and excited to have the opportunity to join GVHBA and help build on the efforts of Peter and his excellent team,” says de Wit. De Wit has experience in corporate development, finance and competitive market intelligence. “This is such a crucial time in the history of residential construction with the explosion of new technologies and environmental complexity, and GVHBA

needs to continue to encourage cooperation among members and other stakeholders as they negotiate that change,” says de Wit. “I look forward to leveraging my previous executive leadership ... to (deliver) even greater value for GVHBA members.” “I am delighted Bob emerged as the new leader tasked with taking this respected association to greater heights of excellent for members and consumers alike,” says Simpson. “GVHBA will benefit greatly from his impressive business experience and well-honed technology skills. I am leaving the association in very capable hands.”

Moving into the ensuite bathrooms, the custom shaker-style vanities and stone countertops are cool and modern, complemented by the deep soaker tub perfect for relaxing in and the oversized glazed ceramic tile flooring. Most floorplans feature his-and-hers sinks, a convenient feature that demonstrates Woodbridge’s commitment to quality and customer service. The ceramic tile surrounds are chic, while the huge vanity mirrors are ready to show you in the most flattering light. “These are thoughtfully designed

plans with many standard features you’d expect to pay extra for,” says McClean. “There’s loads of quality from a proven and trusted builder.” Pre-registration is open online, and already there has been a great mix of demographics looking at the homes, McClean says. “It will be a new community. Much like a residential street, it will have all ages.” Homes start at $369,900. For more information, visit www.liveatniche.ca or call 604-535-5511. The presentation centre will hold its grand opening on Sept. 29, and will be open Saturday to Thursday between noon and 5 p.m., located at 3039 156th Street, Surrey.

Relaxing in South Surrey

Finding your Niche with Woodbridge Homes by Kerry Vital

Woodbridge Homes is bringing an intimate community to South Surrey with its townhome development, Niche. Surrounded by green space, you will feel instantly relaxed as soon as you turn into the driveway of your new home. “A creek runs through the property and it is adjacent to a protected green belt on two sides,” says sales manager Tucker McClean. “It’s my favourite feature – sets it apart from all others, tucked away, yet close to everything.” The two-, three- and four-bedroom townhomes are located in the Morgan Heights area, close to everything that you could possibly need. Shopping and restaurants at Morgan Crossing and Grandview Corners, schools and leisure activities at the Morgan Creek golf course are all just minutes away. Easy access to Highway 99 means you can be on your way to downtown Vancouver, the Vancouver International Airport or

The landscape is truly green, making you feel like you’re in the middle of your own private oasis. The homes include large patios and decks, so you’ll be able to spend as much time as you’d like outside without having to leave your home. Adding a natural gas barbecue connection is an extra option, for when you’re in a grilling mood. Inside, the nine-foot ceilings on the main level and huge windows lend a sense of space to the home. The open floorplans are perfect for entertaining, with plenty of room for dinner parties or games nights. Wood-laminate flooring throughout the main living areas is beautiful and welcoming, while the trackless nylon carpeting on the stairs and throughout the upper hallways and bedrooms lend a sense of warmth to the proceedings. The kitchens feature stone countertops and classic shaker-style cabinetry, and are complemented by under-cabinet lighting and a ceramic and glass-tile backsplash.
