Mentors wanted

Not only is teaming up with Big Brothers Big Sisters to make a measurable, long-lasting impact on children a good idea, but it is also a very smart decision, as well! It is one that can have a tangible, positive impact on your career and your community. Volunteering is a two-way street, it can benefit you, your family and your career as much as it will the children and Big Brothers Big Sisters! Through volunteering you can be assured to make new friends and new contacts and learn about a variety of new opportunities and resources in the community. Another benefit to

volunteering is learning marketable job skills and the training you will receive “on the job”. While volunteering for Big Brothers Big Sisters you will be learning more about mentoring and about the powerful, measurable, ongoing local

impact. We are always ready for more volunteers to partner with us in making sure that every child who needs a mentor has a mentor! We currently have 11 children on our waiting list in the Cranbrook and Kimberley area.

Beautiful lawns start in the fall

I don’t know what it is about walking through a meadow with tall grass, pulling the seed heads off the stems as you go along. Last weekend, as we were walking the dogs in the community forest, I noticed both my daughter and I, hands stretched out, pulling seeds and sprinkling them with random abandon. Usually, I don’ t encourage ripping plants on our walks, but this is actually helping the grass get its job done. Wild grasses go to seed in the fall, taking advantage of fall rains or snow adding moisture and wildlife stomping on the seeds on the search for food, helping to ensure good contact with the soil. If you are looking for a lush and healthy lawn in the spring, it is well worth imitating nature this fall. Grass seed that is applied this fall might not actually sprout until spring, depending on the growing conditions. In any case, you are already ahead of the game as that seed will start growing earlier in the spring, because you don’t have to wait for the soil to dry out so you can level and rake. It all starts with choosing the correct grass seed. A lawn is not composed of just one type of grass: a mixture of grasses with different growth characteristics is what makes a lawn adaptable to various conditions. You can find prepackaged seed blends at your garden centre that are created specifically for open, sunny spots, shady places or areas that need to withstand a lot of traffic. If you sow good quality grass seed that is blended specifically for our area, you will have a much greater chance for success. Knowing the purpose of the specific area you are seeding will determine the type of grass seed you need. How much seed to purchase? For lawn seed, a good rule of thumb is that one kilogram of seed will cover approximately 500 square feet of yard space, but that can vary by the composition of the blends. Before you get started, you have to prepare your ground for seeding. Now is the time to establish proper grades. This will help to avoid standing water later. A layer of two to seven centimeters of good, even soil is sufficient for seeding. To find out more about the condition of your soil, or if you suspect problems, you should check for weeds and have a soil nutrient test done at the garden centre. You should also remove any stones and debris. Decaying wood can promote fungus diseases. You can improve the soil by adding organic matter and black earth if the soil is too sandy, or extra organic matter and clean sharp sand if the soil is compacted. High quality soil ensures strong root development. The most even way to seed a lawn is with the use of a grass seeder. If you are seeding by hand, scatter half the seeds while walking in one direction, and half crisscross to the first direction, to make sure that you cover the entire area. You want to have the seed pressed into the soil but not buried. If you do not have a roller, you can rent one at your local garden centre. A light mulch of peat moss or straw can help in conserving moisture and preventing the seeds from scattering. Keeping the soil moist, but not saturated, is key for at least ten days after seeding. Sprinkle the seedbed lightly with a handheld hose. Be careful not to overdo it either, too much water causes the seed to rot. So go ahead, learn from nature and this fall create the base for a beautiful lawn you will enjoy all next year. Till next week, happy gardening! Submitted by Kerstin

Do something special for your teacher If you are a parent, you might often hear grumbles from your children about too much homework, not enough free time, or too many red Xs on a corrected assignment. World Teachers’ Day is a time to get them thinking instead about what monumental efforts their teachers make every day. If you ask your child to make a list of what they appreciate about their teacher, it may just change their view.

On World Teachers’ Day, take the opportunity to thank your child’s teacher personally for their commitment, creativity, and patience with your child. Teaching can seem like a thankless job sometimes, as both parents and children alike usually only offer a teacher feedback when things are not going well. Here a few thoughtful gestures that can remind teachers that their efforts don’t

Sharing a little love for your teacher can be as simple as getting your homework done. go unnoticed: Send an e-card: These days most parents are in contact with their children’s teachers by e-mail. This time, send them a message that will brighten their day. The website www.5oct.org has a few e-card selections just for this purpose. If you are tech-savvy, Tweet a nice thought about him or her! This is especially fun to do in collaboration with a teenager.

Make a card: With the help of your child, decorate a card and include a thoughtful message from both of you. Send in a special treat: Unless your child’s school has any policies against food gifts, this is a great opportunity to bake Teacher a special batch of muffins or send in a basket of fresh fruit. It can be a gift to take home or to share with the class.

Changes to City Garbage Collection Now In Effect

The City of Cranbrook will now only collect a maximum of three (3) garbage receptacles per week per household. The changes took effect on September 1, 2012 after City Council approved the amendment to the Solid Waste Collection bylaw at their regular meeting of August 13. The intent of the amendments to the bylaw is to further encourage recycling and composting thereby reducing the amount of garbage required to be disposed of each week. The Solid Waste Collection and Disposal bylaw also limits the size of receptacles (either containers or bags) to 100 litres and receptacles cannot weigh more than 20 kilograms each. Garbage containers are to have a water tight cover and smooth rim, must be in good structural and sanitary condition and have fixed handles. Plastic bags are to be securely tied closed at the top and be strong enough to withstand normal handling and lifting. For more information about solid waste pickup, your scheduled collection dates or to review the Solid Waste Collection and Disposal bylaw, visit the City of Cranbrook website at www.cranbrook.ca, click on the ‘Residents’ tab, and click ‘Solid Waste Pickup’.

zens work with literacy instructors and tutors to improve their reading, writing, math, English language and computer skills. These adults are seeking out CBAL (the Columbia Basin and Boundary not-for-profit literacy organization) programs to improve their skills, knowledge and ability so they can participate more fully in their lives and communities. The program benefits and the learners’ commitment are having a positive impact in towns and villages in our the regions. “We work closely with libraries, schools, colleges, businesses, and other community partners to develop, promote and deliver adult literacy and learning services,” said Ali Wassing, CBAL Executive Director. “The Canadian Council on Learning reported that 60% of Canadians do not have the necessary literacy skills to manage their health adequately. We know the health benefits individuals and communities gain when a commitment is made to lifelong learning.” The Adult Literacy and Life Skills international survey found approximately 40% of Canadians need greater

knowledge and skills to effectively find and use basic written information for daily work and living tasks. “Research shows us the need for increased adult literacy,” says Betty Knight, CBAL Regional Program Manager, East Kootenay. “We see the effects on individuals, families and communities, and are committed to helping people change their lives through small group classes, one-to-one tutoring and services at our centres.” “Our learners gain much-needed skills in reading, writing and speaking English,” said Linda Steward, Creston Community Literacy Coordinator. “They also find friendship and emotional support to combat the isolation immigrants experience. It is so rewarding to see them start with little or no English and, within a few years, be working, joining community organizations, and settling into a happy full life in our valley.” Learners expressing their appreciation said: “The ESL class helps me to practice my English and my tutor helps me with many things in my life and I have the conversations with her.”

Selkirk College works with CBAL and the Kootenay Family Place in Castlegar to bring high school upgrading courses to parents. “This program is such a pleasure to be part of,” said Allison Alder, Chair, School of Academic Upgrading and Development, Selkirk College. “While instructors help parents brush up on math, learn a new biology concept or polish their writing skills, they can relax knowing their children are cared for nearby. Bringing learning opportunities to people, where and when they are comfortable, is community learning at its finest.” “The program gave me an opportunity to complete my schooling by providing excellent childcare, career counseling and an awesome tutor. But most importantly, I received positive encouragement to follow through with my career plans,” said Charity Barbour, a past ABE program participant. In Cranbrook, CBAL partners with College of the Rockies to offer the Young Parent Education Program. Young parents, who face multiple barriers, can complete their high school education, and, focus on learn-

ing new life, work and parenting skills. “Learners make new and sustaining friendships, support each other, and, with improved self-esteem are empowered to move on to vocational, academic or employment opportunities when they graduate,” said Katherine Hough, Cranbrook Community Literacy Coordinator. Literacy statistics affecting our communities: 26 per cent of Canadians with the lowest literacy skill levels are unemployed 80 per cent of those with low literacy skills earn less than $27,000 a year. 33 per cent of employers report challenges because some staff need better literacy skills. On [Wednesday, October 10] support literacy in your community by taking part in Black Press and CBAL’s Reach-A-Reader campaign. Buy your local newspaper from a volunteer who will be out in the town. ALL proceeds raised will go to support literacy programs in your community. By learning together, we will grow strong together.

Blissett chosen for region’s NDP next election

Norma Blissett.

Norma Blissett of Cranbrook will carry the NDP banner for Kootenay East in the next provincial election. She defeated Fernie city councillor Randal Macnair at the party’s nominating convention in Cranbrook Saturday. “I’m honoured by this vote of confidence from the local NDP members,” said Blissett, “and I will work hard between now and the May 14 election to become the MLA for Kootenay East.” “I believe that with my resource industry background and my experience in the community, I can be a strong voice for the people of Kootenay East,” said Blissett.

“After talking with constituents in the Elk Valley and Cranbrook it is clear that many people are looking for a change in government. They want an MLA that will listen and act on their concerns. They want an MLA that will respect the views of all constituents. I believe that I can be that MLA” Blissett, 51, is a forester and a high school teacher. Originally from Ontario, for the past 17 years she has lived in Cranbrook, where she raised her three children—Douglas, Mathew and Hope. Blissett currently teaches forestry, science

and math at Mount Baker Secondary School. Previously she was employed as a Forest Educator by a group of East Kootenay forest companies. In Ontario, she worked as a forester for the Ministry of Natural Resources and as a science teacher at Port Hope High School. Blissett earned a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from the University of Toronto, a Bachelor of Education from Nipissing University, and a Master’s in Leadership from Gonzaga University. She has served as a volunteer for a number of organizations includ-

Toes are dangling in the cool waters of the creek, the only sounds are kids laughing and dogs barking as they are splashing together in the water. Across the clearing, a mom and her baby are sitting on a blanket in the shade. This peaceful scene is worlds away

from the situation only a couple of hours earlier: a couple of large dogs with a ton of pent up energy and a three-yearold that refuses to have a nap, crammed into a small, hot car with two exasperated parents who are not sure this trip to Wycliffe Regional Park on a Saturday afternoon is really the best idea.

Fortunately, it is only about a ten minute drive from Cranbrook to the park. The 164 hectare area is the largest of the parks owned and operated by the Regional District of East Kootenay. It includes the vast day picnic area that is open seasonally – midApril to mid-October – from 8 am until dusk as well as the Wycliffe Exhibition Grounds and a Girl Guides camp. Until the 1960s, the area was used as a tree nursery by the provincial government. After operation ceased, they

Park Discovery Trail that winds all the way around the park and covers just over three kilometres. First off, the trail dips down at the edge of the field, soft bark mulch cushioning our step on the steep slope. It is a hot day, but already a nice cool breeze coming through the trees is giving some comfort. On the next level, we get to a clearing with a large day use area. Several picnic benches, fire pits and horseshoe pits and a bocce pit are clustered around a large, covered shelter. This is one of six day use areas in the park. All of them are accessible by vehicle and available for group bookings. They are used for anything from grad parties to family get-togethers

and company picnics. And they offer shelter to hikers, dog walkers and visitors, just looking for a peaceful place to relax. School groups use the sports fields for tournaments and the entire park for outdoor activities. “The number of visitors to the park has been increasing steadily over the last years, especially this year,” says Parks Foreman Chris Kessler. He emphasizes there is no cost to use this facility, even free firewood is included. Every day, park staff make sure the park is immaculate; they straighten up the day use areas and sites and clean fire pits and outhouses. In the evenings, Kessler patrols the park. He says this gives visitors a sense of security. Overnight stays are not

allowed – for liability reasons and to ensure peace and quiet for wildlife. There are a few rules, focused around a simple principle: leave the park as clean as you found it and respect other park users, wildlife and the hard work park staff. They keep trails clear of debris, many sections still show fine lines, left by meticulous raking. Right across from the shelter area, a small sign announces a shortcut down to Perry Creek, however, we stay on the main trail as it winds up the hill. It takes us a while to make our way up the bank. This is due less to the difficulty of the trail and more so because of the amount of distractions along the way. There is a lot to see, especially if

Kootenay News Advertiser Friday, September 28, 2012 beach invites weary travelers to cool their tired feet. The hoodoos straight across provide the most magnificent backdrop. A couple of families have set up camp for the afternoon. Our children don’t need introductions - they climb across large boulders, throw sticks for the dogs and sneak wild raspberries. The tall trees around the clearing provide refreshing shade for the adults and a baby is snoozing on a blanket. The area is almost too inviting – it is late by the time we pack up and move on. It is not difficult to find the Wycliffe Park Discovery Trail. All day use areas are connected to it and it is clearly marked. As we march on, there are more breathtaking views of hoodoos and the Rocky Mountains. We still cheat on the way back to the car – doubling back, sneaking through a smaller day use area and connecting with the shortcut we snubbed on the way in. WE’LL BE IN CRANBROOK, EXCHANGING THE OLD BC HYDRO METER ON YOUR HOME WITH A NEW SMART METER. BC Hydro is upgrading homes and businesses with new smart meters. you have the natural curiosity of a three-yearold. ‘What lives in that hole? Look, a spider’s web! Why is the squirrel making noise?’ We catch glimpses of the hoodoos across the valley. We walk through dense forest with firs and pines, and open, grassy areas populated by tall larch trees. Birds and crickets provide the background music as well as the rumble of Perry Creek that gets louder and louder as we get closer. Before we dip down to the creek, a bench invites us to take a break. We pause for a quick snack of raisins and a drink of water and enjoy the view. After a few more discoveries, the water beckons and we continue on, down the slope towards Perry Creek. Once again, the forest opens up and we find another day use area, maybe the most spectacular of them all. A small shelter is nestled into the forest edge, with picnic benches and a fire pit grouped around it. Just steps away, a rocky

Composting ABCs coming this Sunday Submitted There will be a composting workshop this Sunday, September 30 at Cranbrook’s new Public Produce Garden. Composting! It’s one of the best ways to improve the health of your gardens, clean up your yard, and make use of waste that’s filling up your garbage bins. The best (and cheapest!) way to make your soil healthier is composting, and healthy soil is a key ingredient in happy, healthy, strong plants. When grass clippings, leaves, and kitchen scraps are taken away with the garbage, your garden soil is robbed of important nutrients. There are several misconceptions about composting this work-

shop will eradicate. Some people believe a compost stinks, takes up too much room, looks bad, or takes too much time and effort. When set up properly, none of these are true. It’s incredibly rewarding to transform yard and kitchen waste into black gold for your garden. It’s a lot easier than packing leaves into garbage bags and driving them to the dump, too! Even without a yard, it’s possible to compost. Especially if you get to know the Cranbrook Public Produce Garden a little better! It belongs to you. During this free hour long Intro to Composting Workshop, local expert, Laura Duncan, will share all you need to know to set up your own composting sys-

Come and find out for yourself this Sunday, September 30 from 2-3 p.m. at the Cranbrook Public Produce Garden. In addition to the Composting Workshop, there will be fun activities from 1-4 p.m., including potato picking and tasting, fun kid’s games, produce to take home, and a chance to get to know what this project is all about! line Gullion were determined to renovate their depression era house. So they picked up their hammers and caulking gun and got to work. With help from family, friends and YouTube, they learned how to insulate properly and also how to make other energy efficiency upgrades. Some small, and with help from professionals, some big. Like the furnace. “It was pretty obvious that the furnace had to go. It was amazingly old and inefficient,” said Schultz. So they took the plunge and had it replaced with an ENERGY STAR® highefficiency model. They had the original ducting system replaced too for even better efficiency. The ladies have proven that you don’t have to spend a lot to save a lot. “For less than $50 on a tube of window caulk, a roll of weatherstrip-

ping and a window film kit, you can significantly change the comfort of your home,” says Gullion. And they’ve got proof. Before making improvements, an energy advisor rated the house at 48 out of 100 on the EnerGuide® efficiency scale (a standard measure of a home’s energy performance). Now it’s up to 64. And even though they switched out the electric range to a gas model, (“We just like cooking with gas,” quips Gullion.) the natural gas consumption has dropped by 26 per cent since making all the energy efficiency improvements. As for future improvements, they hope to replace the windows. For now, they’re enjoying their home and practicing conservation. Like hanging their clothes out on the line, taking

If you’re considering making energy efficiency improvements like Schultz and Gullion, FortisBC has a number of rebate offers, how-to advice, and quick tips to help make it easier and economical. If you currently heat your home with oil, switching to cleaner burning natural gas makes sense. And better yet, the utility offers a $1,000 rebate when you convert your oil heating system to natural gas. Already have a gas furnace or boiler? If it’s more than 15 years old considering upgrading it to a qualifying highefficiency model for an $800 rebate. But hurry, only 2,000 rebates are available. And while upgrading the heating system consider your water heater too. Next to heating your home, heating water is the biggest consumer of energy in your house. FortisBC offers rebates from $200 to $1,000 when you install a highefficiency natural gas water heater. Don’t forget the province’s LiveSmart BC Efficiency Incentive Program. Any rebates you qualify for can be combined with FortisBC’s natural gas offers. And finally, if water heater and furnace upgrades aren’t in your budget this winter, FortisBC’s website offers how-to videos such as how to install a low-flow showerhead, or replace a furnace filter, conservation tips and information on the benefits of natural gas. start receiving my federal pension?”. We can hope that Canadian employers will begin to see the importance of promoting a diverse workforce and the value of life experience and maturity in the work place. We can also expect that governments will start investing more in vocational training programs for older people. In the meantime, there are a few strategies for employment survival that we can talk about on the International Day of Older Persons. Every individual can take responsibility for his or her own healthy and active aging, so that working continues to be feasible and even enjoyable. Active aging means letting go of health-compromising habits such as smoking, over-eating, and being sedentary. Regular exercise, healthy relationships, and eating as much fresh, natural food as possible are a good foundation for remaining productive and happy well into old age. When an older person finds themselves in an employment slump, perhaps the result of ageist policies in a workplace, it is important to find support right away. They can meet with a career counsellor or a union representative, or join a self-help group. Even better, they can re-orient towards selfemployment or work in another sector, perhaps in a creative departure from their career choice.

Sufficient life insurance Life insurance exists to protect the surviving members of your family from financial loss associated with your death. Theoretically, people who have the most to gain from taking out life insurance are those who will leave others in need when they die, such as a spouse or children. By taking out sufficient life insurance, you can guarantee the preservation of your family’s lifestyle and goals in the event of your death. The first step is to evaluate your personal situation. The best way

to go about this is to establish an up-to-date financial plan that takes into account your family’s needs. The goal is to calculate the immediate living expenses that must be met so that your family will not have to deal with any financial worries in case of death. An estimate of final expenses should also be made, especially funeral expenses, lawyer fees, as well as estate taxes — when a death occurs, the assets of the deceased are taxed before being passed on to heirs. The policy holder’s debts

International Day of Older Persons Seniors Guide & Estate Planning should also be taken into consideration, such as credit card balances, a mortgage, and personal loans. The death of a family member will have an effect on the family budget; there will, of course,

be a drop in income if the deceased worked, but this might be balanced by a reduction in certain expenses, such as groceries, clothing, and transportation. In short, a sufficient amount has to be planned for so that

beneficiaries will be able to maintain the life-

style they are used to.

Jack E. Clarke September 24, 1937 – September 11, 2012 (74 years young) Jack E. Clarke was born September 24, 1937 in Fernie to John (Jack) and Helen (Hark) CLARKE. Most of his childhood was spent in Fernie but he also lived in Trail, Cranbrook, Crowsnest and Grasmere. He had so many happy memories and stories about his adventures and exploits with his mom and dad, young friends and cousins. When he was 11 years old, his sister Marilyn arrived, and she adored her big brother with his big smile and the mischievous twinkle in his eyes. Jack loved to catch a ride with the “mail lady to Grasmere to help out on his Grandma Hark and Uncle Tony’s farm. This is where his interest and love of horses originated and continued throughout his life. He attended school (sometimes) in Fernie, until grade 8 when he left school to work for the Department of Highways as a scaler and weighmaster. In 1956 Jack married his forever best friend and the love of his life, Frances Smith. Over the next ten years they enjoyed the arrival of their five children, son Jackie, and daughters Debbie, Shelly, Kim and Susan. During the years Jack worked as a logging and lumber truck driver at Gold Creek, Newgate, Elko, Fernie and Galloway. He also drove low-bed, freight, fuel, gravel and various highway trucks around Western Canada and the USA. He loved truck driving and it was the life he chose. He has probably driven and had intimate knowledge of most roads in the East and West Kootenays and as far North as Grande Prairie and Slave Lake. Jack Clarke still holds the record for hauling the heaviest load of logs into the Elko Mill. He also hauled the highest load in to Galloway where he tore down the 24’ power lines at Bull River! Jack had enough stories to fill volumes about his trucking experiences. In spare time Jack and Frances operated Wigwam River Guide and Outfitters. He was the first guide and outfitter on the Wigwam River territory. With the help of his dad and son, he built a huge larch lodge, guest cabins, hay barn and corrals. It is still the original lodge that stands today. The family then built the FJ Whippletree Ranch at Morrissey, clearing the land, building a home, bunkhouse and extra-large barn. Over the years they raised everything from chickens and turkeys to pigs and calves and also a few rabbits that multiplied to about 200 and they had to be relocated! They also raised mules and horses, including draft horses. The family became good team drivers and never missed a Sandpoint Draft Horse Show. Jack remembered the names, traits and personalities of every horse he ever rode or encountered and he took great pride and joy in sharing his love and knowledge of horses with his children and others. He was always very partial to his Appaloosas. He rebuilt wagons, sleighs and horse-drawn farm equipment for use on their ranch. He also used the wagons and sleighs for hayrides at Morrissey and the Ski Hill. Jack and his family were active members of the Snow Valley Wranglers and enjoyed participating in gymkhanas, pot-luck dinners and dances. They hosted many trail rides in the back country and to his cabin in the Wigwam. Jack was a cowboy at heart and was at home sitting around a campfire or riding his horse. He also liked to do a little fishing in his “other spare time and caught Dollys in the Wigwam and the Flathead. His best fishing was in Likely, BC with his dad and son. The three Jacks caught more fish than a low-bed could haul! The family have very fond memories of the time that Jack rented a motorhome and they travelled to Disneyland and points south where Jack could show his kids the “western history of the U.S. Jack found that he loved roaming around in the motorhome and so when he retired they bought one. Jack and Frances were free spirits travelling to the Okanagan, California, Nevada, Arizona and Mexico. For a while they lived in the Baines Lake area but soon moved back to his stomping grounds in Fernie. Jack was lucky to be spoiled by the women in his family! His mother, sister, wife and daughters thought “he walked on water and ironically his initials were J.C. Jack loved his family and was proud of them. He had a genuine interest in their lives and activities. His grandkids were very special to him. He never missed a family gathering and was always looking forward to the next one, where he would “tell more stories. There will never be another you. Jack lost many people in his lifetime that he missed dearly but the tragic loss of his son Jack Jr. in 2010 was a devastating blow to him and his family. Probably one of Jack’s best remembered attributes was his enthusiastic ability to “tell a story. He was an avid storyteller and historian and if there was anything you wanted to know from “way back when, just ask Jack. He remembered so many interesting details about people that crossed his path or places he lived, or worked or visited. He had a knack for turning a difficult situation into a funny story. He always had a story to tell. Hopefully we will continue to tell his stories, keeping some of the “color and personality he delivered with them. Jack had friends from many trails in life – childhood friends and cousins, fellow truckers, cowboy partners, snowbird travellers, coffee buddies, his Trinity Lodge neighbours, and his friends at dialysis. Jack seemed to remember everyone that he met along the way. He was always ready and willing to take a drive “somewhere – maybe the coffee shop, Eureka, Blairmore, Kalispell, the Okanagan, the Flathead, Wigwam or “just a drive. Jack loved life (and dogs, horses, trucks, Johnny Cash, John Wayne & western movies, friends and family) and tried to live it to the fullest right to the end. And, he “did it his way. So, Jack Clarke, you were bigger than life, and your strong spirit will live in our hearts forever. “Who’s going to fill your boots? Happy trails to you until we meet again. Jack was predeceased by his son Jackie, and his parents John (Jack) and Helen Clarke. Jack is survived by his loving family: wife Frances, sister Marilyn (Lorne) Earl, his daughters: Debbie (Dave) Warner, Shelly (Phil) Bradshaw, Kim (Cam) McDonald, and Susan (Gary) Dixon. His grandchildren: Erin, Marlee (Preston), Jamie, Lindsay (Chad), Cody (Staci), John Ross (Caitlin), Katie, Colter (Jan), Skye, Becka (Clint) and Clayton, great grandchildren: Lee, Lane, Aspen, Dylan, Kinslee, Benny, Ayla, and Kade as well as many special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Messages of condolence may be sent to the family at www.cherishedmemoriesfs.com Arrangements entrusted to Cherished Memories Funeral Services Ltd.

(Kootenay East) Province of British Columbia

3 Facts you need to Know About...

UBCM 1.

2.

3.

The Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) is an organization that has represented the interests of local governments in BC since 1905. The UBCM was formed to provide a common voice for local government and the annual convention continues to be the main forum for UBCM policy-making. It provides an opportunity for local governments of all sizes and from all areas of the province to come together, share their experiences and take a united position. The Annual UBCM convention takes place this week, Sept. 24 – 28 in Victoria. Local governments from across the East Kootenay will have the opportunity to present their community’s highest priorities. As Minister responsible for Communities, I will have 64 meetings with local governments and deliver 10 speeches.

It will be a good, honest discussion with local government. Municipalities will quite understandably argue they need more money for roads, sewers, water and transit and I will be raising the issue of local government generally trying to keep their expenses down the way the province does.

Alex Evald Johnsen Apr. 25, 1906 – Dec. 27, 1976 Christine Wilhelmina Johnsen (Opper) July 31, 1914 – May 24, 2012 An Interment Service will be held at the Kimberley Cemetery in Section I on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 1:00 pm to inter the cremains of Alex and Chris in the grave of their young son, Wayne, who drowned in the St. Mary’s River at Wycliffe, BC on March 20, 1945. Pastor Drew Westergaard will be delivering the graveside sermon for all who wish to attend. Alex (nee Evald Johansen) immigrated to Canada from Denmark on his own at the age of 17 yrs and arrived by ship in Ottawa, Ontario on March 25, 1924. He worked on farms and underground mines across Canada eventually settling in Kimberley where he was employed as a miner for Cominco for several years. He left Cominco and was employed as a plumber for the City of Kimberley Public Works Department and then with the Village of Chapman Camp as a Foreman of the Garbage and Snow Removal Department until his health failed due to Silicosis. Chris’s parents and older siblings immigrated to Canada from Germany in the early 1900’s and settled as grain farmers near Rock Glen, Saskatchewan. Chris and Alex met and were married in Kimberley. They spent most of their married life in Wycliffe raising their 4 children with the “old school teachings to be honest, decent, respectful, hard working and responsible. Chris was a homemaker, avid gardener and her passion was raising chickens, pigs and calves to help provide for the family’s needs. Alex and Chris will always be remembered for their honesty and integrity when dealing with people, as well as their compassion and hospitality. They were kind and caring to everyone they met and had dealings with. What little they had, they would share without hesitation with others. Thank you Mom and Dad for the many life skills you taught us and all the fond memories we have of our life together. Richard, Gail Dennis, and Bob Johnsen.
