raising efforts to purchase the Claim.” A total of $51,000 will need to be raised by September 30th to purchase the 188 hectare Mineral Claim, with a formal purchase agreement in place by October 4th. “There was a strong desire expressed last night by the community to see this area protected. As soon as those in attendance agreed that the community will raise the funds, seven people put up their hands and donated $1,000 each, so I am optimistic they will achieve their goal,” adds Walter. Anyone wishing to make a donation can contact Bob Johnstone at 250-4273277. If they do reach their fundraising target, a member of the community must register as a Free Miner and apply to have the Mineral Claim transferred from the current tenure holder to the Free Miner. The next step would be to register a Quit Claim on the parcel, which would relinquish the mining rights back to the Province. At that point, the RDEK would apply for a “No Staking Reserve” from the Ministry of Energy and Mines, which would ensure no further claims are registered on the parcel. Once the parcel was designated as a Regional Park, it would no longer be eligible for mineral claims and would become an Area E amenity. The Cherry Creek Falls area is currently within a permitted mineral claim tenure which allows for a rock quarry. Concern about the potential impact of mining activity has prompted the community to pursue the long term protection of the area through the creation of an Electoral Area E park. For more information, contact RDEK Planner Michele Bates at 1-888478-7335 or 250-4892791.

Five years may not seem that long of a time period, but for one talented Cambodian, that stretch has meant a world of change for him and his family. Hy Chanthavouth, who goes by the easier to pronounce “Vouth” (rhymes with foot) in Canada, is an up and coming opera singer who was discovered in Cambodia by Arne Sahlen, a classical and ragtime pianist and composer from Kimberley. Sahlen since 1992 he has been going to Cambodia with the Cambodia Support Group (CSG) to help the people there. For the past five years Vouth has been in Canada, first being educated in English and Canadian culture in Cranbrook and Kimberley and now continuing his education at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. “The reason I’m living in Canada now is to take the knowledge I get here back to Cambodia. I’m here to follow a dream to be able to study opera and become a professional opera singer to represent Cambodia,” said Vouth. “Opera is western music and is very new to a poor country like Cambodia.” And this is exactly
the type of person that Sahlen is pleased to help. He explained that Vouth volunteered his time and expertise with the CSG in Cambodia with absolutely no expectation of reward. It was during this time that Sahlen found out just how talented this young man is. However, talent and a willingness to help is no guarantee of success, especially in Vouth’s home country. “Brilliant or no, someone like Hy Chanthavouth may have no chance if a CSG sponsorship plan had been announced. Directors and the rich would tout and push their kids; glowing reference letters might appear on payment of bribes or threat of harm; transcripts could be doctored the same way. When our first sponsored student (pianist Piseth, 199798) went back, the University music school director was still angry that his son had not got Piseth’s Canada chance. He made so much trouble that Piseth finally quit. Piseth did not tell me – one does not speak badly about teachers in Cambodia – but an upset British VSO volunteer did,” said Sahlen. He went on to relate that Vouth used his small motorcycle and his local connections to help the CSG mission in whatever way he could. Tirelessly working to help the organization and his fellow Cambodians. Because of these traits, along with obvious talent, Sahlen felt Vouth would be a good candidate for further training in Canada. Since coming to Canada, Vouth has been very busy. He is a goodwill
ambassador with the CSG, helped organize and develop a trip to Cambodia by the University of Victoria Choir, has sang at nearly 100 fund raising concerts, taught music to Cambodian students and has even performed to raise funds for the Women’s Emergency Shelter in Cranbrook to name only a few of his accomplishments. However, he is quick to point out that he has had help to accomplish all he has done. “Arne is not only a mentor but a supporter too. He is like a father to me—always supportive,” said Vouth. “And I’d like to thank everybody who has helped me learn and who have supported me in Canada.” In Kimberley, Vouth had two homestay families. Jeannie MacDonald and Ian Ferrie and Brenda Tocszak and Ken Rintoul, along with their families introduced him to mountain culture. In Cranbook, Andrea and Michael Grossman took him in and supported him as he strove to better his English skills. To conclude, the story of Vouth is about love. The love of music, the love of charity and the love of integrity. Coming from a country where Sahlen explained that corruption is taken as a way of doing business, it is not only that a young man was able to find a new way in the world, but that it can be done entirely with hard work, relationships and commitment. For the people living in underprivileged countries around the world, there can be no better endorsement of Canada.

More Tools to Better Train You
As a CHEK Exercise Coach, I have been trained to test core strength and detect muscular imbalances with measurements such as thoracic curve, lumbar curve, first rib angle, etc. This information allows me to create exercise programs tailored to my clients’ needs. I have also been offering holistic lifestyle coaching which consists in assessing nutrition, sleep and wake cycles, digestion, fungus/ parasites and stress levels. A few months ago, I flew to San Aurélie Diego California and completed Wiedemann the CHEK Practitioner Level One certification, which is the next advancement of the CHEK Exercise Coach program. This seminar was fascinating and upon its completion, I incorporated additional measurements such as muscle length tension, spinal motion and primal pattern functionality to my assessments. There are seven primal patterns (lunge, squat, push, pull, bend, twist and gait) and detection of core deficiencies as well as alignment problems while performing these exercises is of foremost importance to help correct posture in motion. This new assessment methodology also allows me to determine how functional a client is and where to start them within their exercise program. Since my return from the certification training, I have also integrated my newfound awareness regarding nutrition. Many people have intolerances to gluten, milk products and/or soy products. Intolerances aren’t allergies, rather they are minor reactions to a product. If the products in question are consumed in excess, however, intolerances can strengthen and prevent the digestive tract from working properly. In fact, carrying fat around the belly is one of the first indicators of food intolerances. That being said, everyone is different and thus individual assessments are necessary. I really enjoyed everything I learned this year and can’t wait for next year. I’ve already signed up for the CHEK Practitioner level 2 certification in order to continue to provide the most advanced, complete and personalized approach to training. For more information on the services I offer at Sattva Training Centre, contact me at 250-464-4046 or sattvatraining@gmail.com to book a free consultation.

On Saturday, the 22nd of September, Evolution Martial Arts held their First Annual Fisher Peak Challenge Sparrathon at Selkirk High School Gymnasium in Kimberley. The event was a gruelling 2880 seconds or 48 1 minute rounds, of sparring in a friendly atmosphere, which equals the same height as Fisher Peak in meters. The event was held to raise money to help 14 year old Jenna Homeniuk who is currently in Calgary’s childrens hospital, receiving treatment for Leukemia. There were 20 participants who took part in the event with members not only from Evolution Martial Arts, but with a number from the Rocky Mountain Academy of Martial Arts including Guru Joel Huncar who graciously offered the support of some of his members to spar in the event. The event was a great success not only for Jenna, but for the spirit of friendship, cooperation and perseverance shown during the sparring. Event organisers, Simon Wachon and Robyn Cockell would like to give special thanks to everyone who took part, but especially to Bella who at just 4 years old, completed the whole sparrathon and raised over $400, to Joel from RMAMA and to Mike Honeyman of Arrow Installations, who also took part in and very generously matched the amount of $2027.11 raised on the day, to send Jenna an amazing $4054.22 in total for the event. All the event participants hope the extra money will come in handy for Jenna and her family while they are living with treatment and the hardships which go with it. Please visit The “Fight for Jenna” facebook page, or go to cranbrookmartialarts. com to find out more, or donate.

New Dawn Developments has just released three new home designs created specifically for the Elizabeth Lake Ridge area. Tying in with nearby Elizabeth Lake Bird Sanctuary, the homes have been named after local birds; The Waxwing, The Meadowlark and The Bluebird. All homes feature an open concept kitchen, living and dining room and have plenty of windows to let in natural light and wonderful views. Double attached garages, generous ensuite baths and walk in closets are standard in all homes. The Waxwing is a 3 bedroom bungalow design with a welcoming covered front porch. A walk through laundry/mudroom off the garage leads into the kitchen for easy grocery delivery. A large island holds the kitchen sink and offers casual seating at the attached eating bar. The Meadowlark is a grade entry home that boasts three levels of living space. A massive window wall reaches two stories high in the living room. Outside, a raised front deck spans over 30 feet to allow for lots of outdoor entertaining space – and views! The Bluebird is a traditional two story design with an office on the main level and

snowed in. If you were taken by surprise last year, then that is all the more reason not to let it happen again. After all, you can’t take on winter with your bare hands! Take the time to check what equipment you already have on reserve before rushing out to the store. Stock up on fresh water and preserved food as well as flashlights, batteries, and candles. Place these things in an accessible place. Are your snow shovel and scoop in good enough condition to weather a few heavy snowfalls? Does your snow blower need some
maintenance work? If you don’t already have one, are you planning on getting one? Shop around for a model that is ergonomic and efficient for its price. Do you have enough salt to de-ice the outside steps and other places that freezing rain can turn into skating rinks? Remember that clearing your entryway of snow and ice for the postal worker or other visitors is the responsibility of all homeowners.
