Tunnel replacement pledged, no word on tolls
By Jeff Nagel Premier Christy Clark is pledging to begin work to replace the George Massey tunnel and ease intense traffic congestion on Highway 99 in Metro Vancouver. But she said it’s way too early to say if the new bridge or tunnel – to be built over 10 years – will be tolled. “I don’t know the answer to that,” Clark told reporters. “We don’t even know what the replacement would look like.”
Some people in the region prefer a tunnel, while others want a bridge, she said. “We are just beginning the planning process.” She made the announcement at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Victoria, and cited projections Metro Vancouver’s population will grow by another million people by 2031 and that traffic volumes on major highways will grow 30 per cent over the same period.

“It’s an economic bottleneck,” Clark said. “Talk to anybody who drives through the Massey Tunnel in rush hour commute and they will tell you it’s a huge headache.” The announcement is being hailed by Delta civic leaders, who have been pushing the case for a rebuilt crossing with more lanes in light of growing container truck traffic from DeltaPort. But the mere possibility a new Deas crossing would be tolled is certain to inflame the
debate in Metro Vancouver over whether the ad hoc tolling of some crossings must be reformed into some more consistent, equitable system. A tolled tunnel or bridge there in addition to a possibly tolled Pattullo Bridge replacement would leave the Alex Fraser Bridge as the only free crossing of the Fraser River to Surrey and Delta.

will also work to raise its profile by hosting its monthly meetings at different locales of heritage importance in Cloverdale and the rest of Surrey. “Ultimately this [society] needs to advocate, and raise money for conservation and preservation,” Orazietti said. “This, here, is one of a number of tours that will happen that have to do with heritage. So all of this now will take place in different parts of the city, with a different heritage theme.” The society has talked about holding a ‘Great Gatsby’-themed fundraiser in April, and possibly hosting a car show at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds. “The whole idea behind it is to promote the area and the history of Surrey,” Orazietti said. “We are coming out of it from Cloverdale because the greatest number of assets are here, but the goal is to make it broader.”

Langley City Mayor Peter Fassbender, vice-chair of the TransLink mayors’ council, called it a “great announcement” but added it underscores the need to consider new funding solutions beyond bridge tolls. “We need to sit down and talk about an integrated approach to funding transit and road pricing,” he said. NDP finance critic Bruce Ralston said there are real benefits to replacing the tunnel, particularly with a bridge instead. “You could have ships with a deeper draft go further up the river up to Fraser port in Surrey,” Ralston said, adding there’s no doubt traffic outstrips the tunnel’s capacity. The Massey tunnel, built in 1958, is now congested more than four hours a day and runs only one of four lanes of traffic in the off-peak direction during the morning and evening rush. Transportation minister Mary Polak said consultations with stakeholders will look at whether to pursue a bridge or tunnel, whether to use the current alignment or shift it, and how to pay for it. “It’s fair to say that there will be all number of options discussed as we begin the planning of this,” she said. “One of those might be tolls but it is too early to tell.”

Mayors take logical approach Civic leaders are demonstrating leadership by questioning current drug laws, enforcement It’s unlikely that B.C.’s mayors, councillors and regional district directors took a call for marijuana decriminalization lightly. After all, addiction to drugs has had a devastating impact on individuals and families.
Points of view
For many, abuse has resulted in pain and tragedy. However, civic leaders are demonstrating leadership by questioning current legislative and enforcement policies.

A step in the wrong direction To the editor; Re: “City to study plan to pave pedestrian plaza,” Sept. 27. Well that would be a huge mistake and a step in the wrong direction. The plaza is a small amenity to the neighborhood for pedestrians and encourages street life. Cars can drive one block north to 57 Avenue or half a block south to the alley; why would you waste money on paving over a small park to spare a few drivers unfamiliar with the area 10 seconds of confusion? Moreover, with the city and businesses planning on running a streetcar up 176 Street, why on earth would you want to increase the number of intersections it interferes with?
prey on the weakness of others. Most B.C. communities, including Surrey, have experienced the violence associated with
criminal organizations. It is municipalities, through their taxpayers, who are left struggling with the increasing cost of policing. Large-scale grow-ops also create a significant health risk for residents living nearby as well as emergency personnel who respond to the scene. Kevin Acton, Lumby’s mayor, says there is no choice but to reconsider marijuana laws. “We want to put control in the hands of regulators. By being illegal, we keep activities underground,” he said. It should be pointed out that demands for reg-
ulating marijuana come from officials from communities big and small, urban and rural. They can’t be simply dismissed as radicals. On top of this, calls for decriminalization have come from the Health Officers Council of B.C., four former mayors of Vancouver and four former B.C. attorneys general. Hopefully, the federal government will take notice of the rationale debate in B.C. and consider the possibility that current laws may not be working. Ottawa must join the conversation.

The BIA should not be encouraging all their customers to drive around downtown right to the front door of each and every store; they should be encouraging patrons to park, get out of their car and walk around for a block or two. Absolutely the wrong decision.

Is something else going on? There are very few problems that can be solved by paving everything in sight. The range of guest speakers includes an Iranian artist and activist, a fashion historian, an organic farmer, and even an account of Stalin’s Gulag. I Can’t Believe She Wore that Dress is the cheekily-titled Oct. 4 lecture by fashion historian Ivan Sayers, who will lead a guided tour through the fashion faux pas of the past 100 years. This fun presentation includes dressed mannequins, for easy snarking. It’s tonight Oct. 4 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $10, for ages 16 years and up. Pre-registration required. He’ll also share the basics of growing your own produce. This lecture is Saturday, Oct. 6 (World Food Day), from 11 a.m. to noon. The cost is $5, for ages 16 and up, and pre-registration required. Also in October, join artist and activist Shohreh Ghanbary for Beyond the Wall: The Memories, the Art, an account of her life in Iran’s notorious Evin Prison. Ghanbary was imprisoned in the 1980s after taking to the streets to protest the Islamic Revolution. She endured horrendous conditions, and lived under the constant threat of execution – even as her fellow prisoners steadily disappeared. In her cell at night she would embroider images of home inside the pockets of her chador. Each year her parents were permitted to bring her a change of clothes, and her messages were smug-

Giving Thanks I don’t think my baby son is particularly thankful for the things my husband and I do for him. Sure, he looks delighted when I spoon rice cereal into his mouth, and downright gleeful when I put him in his Jolly Jumper, but I don’t think that’s gratitude. Do I mind? Of course not! Rather, I’m glad he can take for granted that his needs are met, and can depend on us, his parents, to take good care of him. I, on the other hand, should be old enough to be less thoughtless and more grateful. But am I? Too often I rush through my day, eating my food, enjoying my home, and taking care of my son without any thought to the one who gave me all these good blessings. When I recognize my own ingratitude, I take comfort in the knowledge that God is a heavenly Father who takes delight in giving gifts to his children, and who is endlessly patient with our carelessness and weakness. But I want to be a grateful child, thanking my Father for everything he gives and drawing closer to him in doing so. Neighbourhood Bible Study After all, being able to have a relationship with the Giver himself at Wired Monk at 16811 60th Ave from 7 to 9 pm on Wednesdays is the most priceless and enduring gift he gives. What about you? This Thanksgiving, when you pause to think about all the things you’re grateful for, will you think about where all these blessings come from? Why not join us as we thank and praise God together, and learn more about him? “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures Jan Broersma forever.” Psalm 118:1 This column is sponsored by the

Cedar weaver
BOAZ JOSEPH / BLACK PRESS
Paying attention to instructor Todd DeVries, Sandie Laver separates the warps she’s cut to make a cedar bracelet at a cedar weaving workshop at the Surrey Museum last Saturday. The event coincided with the Baskets for Barter exhibit, which is on display at the Museum until Dec. 22. The exhibit honours the tradition of Coast Salish basket weaving and exchange along the lower Fraser River.
Historian shares stories of hope From page 5
The cost is $5, for ages 16 years and up; pre-registration required. Closer to Remembrance Day, the Surrey Museum presents Vimy Ridge. First World War re-enactor and Western Front Association member Tim Heller brings his artifacts to the museum for a presentation featuring his work on the sets of war documentaries and projects, commemorating the 90th anniversary of Vimy Ridge. Heller’s
lecture runs from 1 to 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 3. The cost is $5, for ages 16 and up; pre-registration required. Also on Nov. 3 is Letters from Russia, a lecture on life within the walls of Stalin’s terrifying Gulag prison system. Dr. Ruth Derksen Siemens, a local author and historian, shares stories of hope amidst despair through prisoners’ letters written between 1930 and 1937. Letters from Russia runs from 3 to 4 p.m. The cost is $5. It’s for
ages 16 and up; pre-registration required. After the Remembrance Day ceremony at Surrey Museum Plaza, join local author Robert Mackay for Soldier of the Horse to learn about Surrey’s connections to the Canadian World War I Cavalry, and the important role of horses during the war. It’s on Nov. 11 from noon to 1 p.m. This drop in lecture is by donation, and suitable for all ages.

Zookeeping for teens Here’s something that sounds ideal for teens who like snakes, reptiles, turtles and critters both feathered and furry and are wondering how to turn that interest into a possible career path. Cinemazoo is offering a junior zookeepers course, a hands-on, eightweek program Sundays starting in October. The course will cover 25 different subjects relating to zoos, animals, safety, pest control and more. There will be projects and hands-on animal care experience. The course begins Oct. 14 for eight weeks, on Sundays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Cinemazoo, 1395 176 Street in South Surrey. The cost is $225. The program is for ages 13 to 17. For more information, call 604299-6963, email info@cinemazoo.com, or visit www.cinemazoo.com. Cinemazoo and Urban Safari Rescue Society. – Cloverdale Reporter
Party after the turkey One of western Canada’s top Celtic musical acts is coming to the Dublin Crossing Irish Pub this Sunday. Pat Chessell and friends perform a long weekend Sunday concert Oct. 7, from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Chessell was a featured act at the Irish Pavilion at the 2010 Winter
Olympics, and enjoys a growing fanbase. Earlier this year, Chessell released ‘Drunk in Exile,’ his debut single, co-written with Bruce Coughlan of Tiller’s Folly. The song has hit the airwaves in such diverse locales as Hawaii and Ireland, as well as making significant sales on iTunes. He’s currently at work on a second album to be released in March 2013. – Cloverdale Reporter
Costume swap What are you going to be for Halloween? If you’re a parent, and if the question is directed at your child, it’s bound to increase the blood pressure of anyone who isn’t a sewing whiz or made of money. But the annual October costume conundrum may have gotten a little less complicated, if something called Costume Swap Day catches on. The idea is to trade in old costumes (in good condition) rather than toss them out. The recycling-friendly idea seems to be spreading fast. The 4Cats Art Studio in Clayton Heights is hosting a costume swap day. The public can bring in clean costumes to the studio until Oct. 8 so they can be sorted in time. The swap runs Oct. 12 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The studio is located at 114 6820 188 Street in Surrey. – Cloverdale Reporter

By Jennifer Lang The owners of a new pub are planning to open The Henry Public House later this month, once renovations are complete. The establishment is moving into the old Legacy Showroom at the Clover Inn at 5708 176 Street. The pub’s owners, Langley-based Joseph
Richard Group, already operate several highend watering holes in the Lower Mainland, including Micky’s Public House in Coquitlam and the Townhall Public House in Langley. In August, the company began hiring kitchen, front house, management and sales staff for The Henry, is still hiring door staff.
The space was previously home to a strip club that was closed down in January. One of the owners at the time, president of Waterstone Investments, said in shutting the club’s doors, he was responding to pressure from the local business community, law enforcement and the City of Surrey.

“It doesn’t fit in anymore,” Knott told The Reporter. “The city has wanted it shut down for a long time.” Both the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce and the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association had been lobbying to shut the club down as a condition of moving the motel’s liquor store. The Surrey RCMP’s Cloverdale community policing office and the City of Surrey were also instrumental in convincing Knott to pull the plug. The move represented “a turning point”, Cloverdale Chamber executive director Bill Reid said at the time. Joseph Richard Group is also planning to open a new liquor store in Clover Crossing Mall at 64 Avenue and 176 Street in Cloverdale. The Clover Station Liquor Store location was most recently home to a Blockbuster Video. According to their corporate website, co-owners Andre Joseph Bourque and Ryan Richard Moreno met in elementary school and have been friends ever since. They worked in the hospitality industry, starting as bartenders and working their way up to opening their first venture in 2002. They are expanding the group across the Lower Mainland, and are expecting to open another Townhall pub in South Surrey.

Wireless upgrade complete Telus has finished its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) upgrade in the Lower Mainland, extending fast wireless technology throughout the region. The company spent $8.2 million on the upgrade from Richmond to Langley and another $2.2 million in the Fraser Valley. LTE is the emerging standard for wireless technology, with most handsets now built for its higher speed.
Free transit offer for students It’s called iWalk, but it’s not a new gadget. TransLink is offering students free transit for the week of Oct. 8-12 in support of International Walk to School Week. The idea is to promote alternatives to riding the family car to school and the offer is available to students from kindergarten to high school (with a valid GoCard.) Students can use the free transit offer any time of day that week and not just to get to school. Classes can also take advantage of it to go on field trips.

Bog named Ramsar wetland An ecological treasure of Metro Vancouver has been put on the international map. More than 20,000 hectares of the Fraser River estuary, including all of Burns Bog, has been named a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. Advocates hope the designation will bolster efforts to protect the bog and other threatened wetlands. But groups that fought for the naming, such as the Burns Bog Conservation Society, say the sensi-
tive ecology of key areas is still threatened by development, including the South Fraser Perimeter Road and a proposed rezoning just northeast of the bog in Delta. “As wonderful as the Ramsar designation is, it won’t stop the destruction of Burns Bog unless the federal government honours its commitments to the Ramsar Convention,” society president Eliza Olson said. The bog is often called the lungs of the Lower Mainland and the South Fraser Delta wetlands provide key bird and salmon habitat. Most of the bog has been protected as a conservancy since 2004, when four levels of government joined forces to buy 2,000 hectares of private land for $73 million. – Jeff Nagel, Black Press
Final Cup beating suspect nabbed Two new elementary schools are one step closer to reality now that builders have been chosen for the projects. Olivit Construction Ltd. won the bid to build Goldstone Park Elementary, at 6286 146 St. A total of six bids were submitted to the school district, the lowest being Olivit’s at $9.9 million and the highest at $10.7 million. Stipulated Price Construction Contract submitted the lowest bid to win the contract to build Katzie Elementary, at 6887 194A St. Stipulated’s bid of $9.8 million was about $1.5 million less than the highest of the seven bidders. Names for the new schools, which should open in the next two years, were chosen this summer based on their location and historical significance. Goldstone was named for an adjacent park, while Katzie honours the traditional lands of the Katzie First Nation, on which the new school will be built.

The L- Carnitines
Q
A
What are the differences between the use of L-Carnitine and Acetyl-L-Carnitine?
Basically they are interchangeable. However, most studies on L-Carnitine were on ischaemic heart disease, angina, post-infarct recovery, and benefits on exercise endurance. Acetyl-L-Carnitine, on the other hand had been more studied for brain function, neuron rehabilitation, and peripheral neuropathies. Acetyl-L-Carnitine has also been shown to enhance male fertility, sperm count and sperm mobility. In general if you want benefits for the heart, take L-Carnitine. If you want to improve memory or virility, take Acetyl-L-Carnitine.
