Latest in a series on items of local interest on eBay. A nifty ca. 1910s photo of the Nelson Daily News (see picture) business office along with three pages of a contemporary letter from the paper’s manager sold last week for $147.50 US. The 5 x 7 picture shows four welldressed men at work, one seated at a rolltop desk. There’s also a big safe, overhead lamps, and other furniture. A wall calendar advertises J.M. Ludwig, a leathergoods store, but the date isn’t clear. Writing on the window reads: “The Daily Ne w s / P u b l i s h e r s / Printers and Bookbinders” The photographer is not identified. The letter that accompanied the photo is on stationary proclaiming the newspaper “The Only Daily Paper in South-Eastern British Columbia” and “A Live Newspaper Serving a Prosperous People.” At the bottom is the suggestion: “Come to Kootenay.” The letter, signed by editor-manager William Garland Foster, was apparently

to a distributor of atlases, which were to be given out as part of a subscription campaign. (The exact recipient is unknown;

the first two pages are missing.) It explains the newspaper’s new policy was to take only cash-in-advance subscriptions, and after a year “we do not intend to furnish the paper to a single subscriber who does not pay in advance.” It continued: “We would expect you to cover every town from Revelstoke on the north to Waneta on the south and between Princeton on the west and Coleman, Alberta, on the east. Coleman, as you know, is just beyond the British Columbian boundary, and we already have quite a number of subscribers there.” Although the letter isn’t dated, it was from early 1912, as there is a reference to the provincial election of March 28 of that year.

Garland Foster was killed in 1918 while fighting in France. His wife Annie’s biography, Passing Through Missing Pages, by Frances Welwood, was published last year. The Nelson Daily News traced its lineage to The Miner, a weekly founded by John Houston and partners in 1890. It became a daily in 1898, and changed hands in 1902, whereupon it was renamed the Daily News and published continuously until it folded in 2010. Its longtime Baker Street home was sold and is presently being renovated into offices. • Another rareish postcard of the Kootenay Lake Hotel at Balfour, mentioned in this column two weeks ago, sold for $52 US. Postmarked at Nelson in 1913, it was mailed to Banff and bore a slogan cancel for the Nelson Fruit Fair, held on September 23, 24, and 25 of that year. The card, lithographed and coloured by J.V. Valentine and Sons, showed the hotel as viewed from across the lake at Procter. More pictures of the above items at nelsonstar.com.

Concerned dog owners in Grand Forks hold rally CASSANDRA CHIN West Kootenay Advertiser

Concerned dog owners who are against breed specific legislation (BSL) gathered in Grand Forks outside Extra

Foods for a walk on Sept. 30. “As you may be aware, there have been a lot of discussions about banning pit bulls and BSL, so this is to promote anti-BSL with all the dog

attacks occurring at the coast, explained Tina Hougard, the organizer in Grand Forks. “As a breed advocate, we don’t want to see that happen because there are other ways to promote

proper ownership. That’s part of our walk as well, promoting responsible ownership. Along with Hougrad’s pit bulls, which wore handmade signs, local dog owners walked with signs showing their protest. Hougard noted

that there is a notion that pit bull mixes and Rottweilers are most likely to kill or seriously maim during an attack, however, fatal attacks since 1975 have been attributed to at least 30 other dog breeds. “There are more

than 70 different dog breeds that are banned in various parts of North America. Our club, the Pacific Northwest American Preservation Dog Registry, is actually hosting our section of the walk, said Hougard. “What we’re try-

25517

ing to do is get walks going all throughout British Columbia roughly around the same time. There were also anti-BSL walks in other parts of the province – Mission, Abbotsford, Surrey, and Victoria.

Pair of SD20 schools in danger of closing after review TIMOTHY SHAFER West Kootenay Advertiser

Two schools could be closing in School District 20 (Kootenay Columbia) this year as the board of trustees embarks on its facilities review. However, the school district’s own office—slated to be part of the review— won’t be dealt with until the status of the lease to own and the

FortisBC building ownership is determined. The projected date of completion for the lease investigation is 2013, according to a follow-up action sheet released by SD20 administration. Beginning this month both Castlegar and Rossland are expected to be down one school after this year as the Kootenay Columbia’s board of

trustees begins a facilities review this month that could trim two buildings out of its 11-school inventory. During budget deliberations last spring the board passed a motion to undertake a facilities review in order to cover for yet another $600,000 budget funding shortfall. SD20 board chair Darrel Ganzert said

the district does have a long list of cuts to look at that are not school closures before they get to that stage this fall, but the facilities review is inevitable. “We want to keep the school closures separate and do that, not for budgetary reasons, but for educational reasons to the extent we can,” he said during budget discussions. “It will

be a lengthy process that we want public input on.” But dropping enrolments across the district have spelled the death of school buildings, and could claim two more. And with dropping enrolment comes a resultant drop in funding from the province, to the tune of $600,000 last year. As a small rural district the area

needs more funding to deal with dropping enrolment after block funding was introduced five years ago, replacing per-student funding, said Trail trustee Mark Wilson. The board had written letters in the past to the Ministry of Education imploring them for the need for more money, he explained, to no avail. “But you know

what? At the end of the day we have to manage our house. We have to tighten our house up. I don’t blame them for not giving us any more money,” Wilson said. He was adamant more should be done beyond the facilities review. He felt the board of nine should be cut to five trustees, and administration at the very top should be cut.

Martin Eichinger

‘Three Options are Open’ (bronze))

One of the foremost figurative sculptors working in the United States today, Martin Eichinger isn’t exactly taken with the designation. “I’d rather be known as a narrative artist, because I think it is more appropriate,” he says. “By sharing story and emotion through the human form I feel connected in a deeper way. That connection is with both the people who view it and, perhaps most importantly, the sculpture I am working on.” Stylistic designation aside, Eichinger’s beautifully detailed, often romanticised figures are prized by collectors, galleries and curators, public and private alike. He has a hugely impressive body of work that reveals the narrative while reveling in the human form in his evocative series such as Dream, Dance, Passage and the one he is currently adding to – Meditation. ‘Three Options are Open’ is the third sculpture in this series. “I see the sculptures in the Meditation series as ‘breaths’, proper breathing being a critical part of effective meditation,” says Eichinger. “I was initially perplexed by how to best sculpt my vision for this ‘breath’ in three dimensions. Because of this, I created the fourth ‘breath’ - ‘Fortify My Spirit’ - first and then returned to this one. “To me, ‘Three Options are Open’ looks at our choices from a distance with honest consideration that creates

common ground and satisfies the greater collective.” Like the other ‘breaths’ in Meditation, the work is visually and anatomically stunning. The nude female twists enticingly, arms and hands raised and aligned with two of the three points of the split orb she rises from. Her gaze is towards the third point, reflecting “the last of the most prominent elements that the edge of the orb represents - we have choices before us and she has identified those she’s chosen with her hands and eyes.” The exquisite musculature and idealized beauty Eichinger is renowned for is again gracefully detailed here. The small ripples of stomach in the turn of the waist, the strength, tone and firmness of the thighs and buttocks and the elegance of the perfectly positioned hands and fingers all attest to Eichinger’s familiarity and

skill in sculpting the human body. More importantly, he presents that form in ways that captivate and instill the essence of the emotion and narrative that graces all his sculptures. Meditation continues the excellence of his invocative and beguiling series of figures sculpted over three decades. Eichinger creates beauty that is much more than skin deep; his bronzes ask of, share with and speak to the viewer and their creator both.

CASTLEGAR SCULPTUREWALK 2013 CALL TO ARTISTS Castlegar Sculpturewalk is now accepting applicants from sculptors to take part in our 2013 event. Horoscope

Michael O’Connor

ffor th the

Week

October O ct 5, 2012

Tip of the Week: Saturn entering Scorpio on October 5th at 1:33 pm PST is the next major astrological event to occur this year. With Uranus and Pluto still in close square aspect and Neptune hovering at 0 Pisces, the stage is set for some significant synchronistic trends and events. Saturn in Scorpio is said not to simply bring about change, metamorphosis is a more accurate term. Of course, change is the law and we are ever subject to its ever flowing current and some periods are more accelerated and turbulent. Scorpio is symbolic of sex, death, depth psychology and taxes – the deep and complex aspects of life. All things hidden, occult, esoteric and mysterious and powerful processes of any kind are linked to the Scorpio archetype, as is the concept of shared resources and those institutions linked to them, like banks and insurance companies. Saturn symbolizes restrictions, delays, contraction, concentration, discipline, hard work and karmic liabilities. Saturn will form a harmonious trine to Neptune upon its entry into Scorpio is a promising sign for deepened spiritual realizations. The entire cycle of Saturn through each sign is an average or 2.5 years, yet it will take 3 years this time before Saturn fully completes this cycle, so much more light will be shed upon this rather dark and mysterious transit yet. This week’s horoscope offers an overview of Saturn in Scorpio for each of the 12 Signs of the Zodiac.

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)

LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)

TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)

SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)

CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)

LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)

AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)

Saturn in Scorpio stands to be especially powerful for you. Get ready to undergo some measurable changes. These can prove positive and productive, yet that may require that you be particularly aware, tuned-in and cooperative. Are you ready to undergo a metamorphosis process? Ready or not, one is about to begin. Positively, caterpillars become butterflies this way.

A deepening of commitments is implied by Saturn transiting through Scorpio. Whatever is in place will become cemented in, so to speak. If you are not happy with how things are or where they seem to be headed, you had better act quickly and deliberately. Otherwise, expect your focus and the current pace to continue. All being well, you are in a steady learning curve.

Your overall health and that of your lifestyle will be a central theme over the next 2-3 years as Saturn transits Scorpio. Hopefully, you are ready and willing to be disciplined and willing to do the work required. Escapist tendencies, denials, evasions and the like stand to produce very negative results. However, if you do set yourself to the task of improving your health, you could turn back the years!

A powerful, creative learning curve will synchronize with Saturn in Scorpio. Changes in your beliefs, perceptions, attitudes and overall philosophy of life are very likely. This creative process stands to be something of a crunch. Although it will unfold slowly, it will be sure. Your task includes a willingness to replace any limiting inherited beliefs and adopt better ones.

Are you ready to face some of your fears? Hopefully you are because Saturn in Scorpio indicates that it is time for you to so. Many, if not most of these, stand to be subconscious. How can you identify them? There are ways if you are open and sincere. Fears linked to money and protection and/or the lack of it is a likely theme. Focus to break through these and you will!

The 2.5 year cycle of Saturn in Scorpio beginning now will have a lot to do with a deep, steep and powerful learning curve. Knowing your direction early on in the process is important. Your focus and perceptions stand to sharpen measurably. This is a very good cycle for concentrating your focus on deepened self-awareness, new techniques or technologies that nurture your whole being.

Contact Michael O’Connor for a Personal Reading

Saturn in your sign over the course of the next 3 years will challenge you to clearly decipher your direction. The sooner you can get clear on a long-term plan the better, in terms of getting disciplined to achieve your objectives. Just as has been the case for the past few years, a steady process of replacing outworn expressions and priorities with better ones will continue.

Saturn in Scorpio for you will have a direct affect on your health, lifestyle, values and financial status. Any excesses in terms of appetites will undergo a purification process. If you cooperate, your confidences will grow. If you rebel and resist you will experience a steady rise in worry and anxiety. With a healthy approach you could achieve the health and/or fitness goals of your dreams.

Saturn’s transit through Scorpio generally marks a time of returns for you. How much you have been focused, disciplined and fulfilling your social and spiritual responsibilities is about to be revealed. If you have been diligent the rewards could be grand. If you have lacked integrity and discipline then you could well have a few debts to pay. It could also be a mixed bag.

Saturn in Scorpio will test your strengths and temper your mettle. You have entered an important cycle of self-improvement. A learning curve is implied. The implications may even prove frightening. Yet, if you face your fears and patiently direct your focus to learn and cultivate your talents you will be right on track. Take new initiatives then persevere patiently.

The next few years while Saturn moves through Scorpio will direct your focus to higher learning. A creative focus is implied. Spiritual self-mastery, which includes emotional strength and maturity, philosophical investigations, intellectual development and an overall process of self-improvement are all likely and ideal areas of focus.

On October 25, 2011, the Insurance Council of British Columbia (“Councilâ€?) held a hearing into allegations that life insurance agent James Robert Milligen was recommending the public invest money to fund the shipment of gold from Ghana to Canada. Council found that Mr. Milligen was involved in an obvious scam and was using his position as a life insurance agent to mislead people for personal gain. As a result, Mr. Milligen’s life insurance licence was revoked for a minimum of Ă…ve years. While Mr. Milligen is no longer licensed with Council, he continues to promote this scam to the public. Council is taking this opportunity to warn the public about Mr. Milligen and this scam.
