The B.C. Liberal government’s plan to award new logging rights, so the Burns Lake sawmill can be rebuilt has a chance of working, but it is taking too long, NDP forest critic Norm Macdonald says. Recently, Jobs Minister Pat Bell and local MLA John Rustad announced the government will award a new community forest tenure to the Burns
Lake Native Development Corp., which was a partner in the Babine Forest Products mill along with Oregon-based Hampton Affiliates. That would provide 150,000 cubic metres per year, and a new area-based First Nations woodlands licence would add another 65,000 cubic metres a year. Bell said a partnership of area First Nations will be formed to share another tenure that would make another 380,000 cubic metres

of wood available to the rebuilt mill. The new forest tenure will mainly come from lower-value timber stands that were not included in the forest inventory before, and will include salvage trees for bioenergy production, Bell said. Vehicle impounded On Sept. 25, 100 Mile Traffic Services located a Ford pickup truck weaving in the southbound lane of Highway 97 near Hill Road. The vehicle was stopped and the 54-year-old male driver from 70 Mile House displayed symptoms of having consumed liquor. An approved roadside screening device was administered and the result was a fail. The driver requested a second test, which was also a fail and he was issued a 90-day immediate driving prohibition. His vehicle was towed and impounded for 30 days.

One Day at a Time documents the tremendous revolution that took place in the B.C. Interior’s forest industry three and four decades ago. In one way or another, Dave Ainsworth has had his hand in every aspect of this revolution. Dave is one of those people who knows how to put his vision into practice. It’s this tremendous resourcefulness we owe him credit for. I know of no other book that so accurately records the vital changes that have taken place in the woods and at the sawmills; it’s a record that will benefit the whole industry. Ray Williston, B.C. Business sessions offered in 100 Mile The South Cariboo Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) is welcoming the local business community to two upcoming events it has planned that feature some special guests. Minister of State for Small Business Naomi Yamamoto will be the guest speaker for some round-table discussions at a luncheon in the South Cariboo Business Centre boardroom, 475 Birch Ave., on Oct. 9. Intended to celebrate Small Business Week, SCCC members are encouraged to attend, with a $15 fee. Non-members are also welcome for a $25 fee, and both include lunch. SCCC manager Angela Cole says seating is limited, so call her at 250-706-2044 to register as soon as possible if you wish to attend. It’s a chance to meet and talk with Yamamoto, who was appointed to this role early last month, and is also a member of the Cabinet Committee on Jobs and Skills Training. Then local busi-

Region well represented at UBCM
DONNA BARNETT
MLA REPORT Last week, I attended the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) convention in Victoria. The UBCM represents municipalities from every corner of our province, and the annual conven-
tion brings together 140 mayors as well as other local and regional representatives, including the Cariboo Regional District (CRD). They meet with provincial leaders to discuss issues that are important to municipalities. I had the opportunity to discuss many issues of importance to our communities. Representatives of the City of Williams Lake and I met with Premier Christy Clark, Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation Minister Ida Chong, Community, Sport and Cultural Development
Embrace literacy at home for best results British Columbians are encouraged to embrace literacy and lifelong learning. In honour of the month, ABC Life Literacy Canada offers fun and easy ways to make literacy part of your family’s daily life. • When making your grocery list, have your child write out the items you need to buy. • At the store, ask your child to count out the money to make the purchase. • Make it a habit to always read a story together at bedtime. • When cooking dinner, involve your children in measuring the ingredients. This helps them understand fractions and measurements. • Driving is the perfect opportunity to practice literacy. Read signs, billboards and licence plates together, and show your children the proper way to read a map. • While on the Internet, make time to research something new your family is interested in. Researching skills are important and help with reading and comprehension. • In the car, sing
along to songs on the radio. Singing encourages learning patterns of words, rhymes and rhythms, and is strongly connected to language skills. • When playing a board game, read the instructions aloud to each other or count how many spaces to travel around the board. • Involve your children when you pay bills. This will teach them strong financial skills early on in life. • Children follow by example, so ensure learning is part of your daily life, too. Minister Bill Bennett, and Minister of State for Seniors Ralph Sultan. Together with CRD representatives, I met with the premier, as well as with Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid. I also met with Justice Minister Shirley Bond in the company of representatives from 100 Mile House. In both these and other meetings throughout the week, we discussed how the province can better serve our communities. I would like to congratulate Quesnel Mayor Mary Sjostrom who became president of the UBCM. As the premier mentioned in her keynote address at the convention, Mayor Sjostrom always fights for her community. She continues a proud tradition — five of the past presidents of the UBCM have been from the Cariboo region. I would also like to congratulate two other community leaders — Al Richmond, the chair of the CRD, who became third vicepresident of the UBCM, and Mayor Mitch Campsall of 100 Mile House, who will now represent the North Central Local Government Association.

Through the hard work of these wonderful people and other community representatives, our region was well represented last week. The CRD put forward 10 resolutions, nine of which were endorsed by the UBCM membership. We accomplished a lot at the convention, and I’m proud
of our local representatives’ hard work. I know they, like me, look forward to continuing the close co-operation between our municipalities and the provincial government for the benefit of everyone in our community. Donna Barnett is the Liberal MLA for the Cariboo-Chilcotin.

B.C. coast prepares for tsunami debris By Tom Fletcher Black Press
Thousands of tonnes of floating debris are expected to wash up on North America’s west coast, increasing as soon as this winter’s storms and continuing for several years. That’s the assessment of experts tracking the scattered wreckage from the 2011 earthquake and ocean surge that devastated the coastline of Japan. The total mass still afloat is estimated at 1.5 million tonnes, but only a small fraction of that is expected to reach British Columbia. Environment Minister Terry Lake said the lighter windblown material that has already begun washing ashore is an increase in natural flow that has occurred for thousands of years. Tsunami debris is expected only on coastal areas directly exposed to the Pacific, and not the east side of Vancouver Island or coastal sections sheltered by islands. It’s not possible to survey or even get access to all areas of B.C.’s coastline, much less clean up the debris completely, Lake said. B.C. will be calling on volunteer organizations to help monitor and collect debris, as United States coastal states are also doing. Timing and volume of debris can’t be determined exactly because it is too spread out to track with satellites, said Robin Brown, head of Fisheries and Oceans
Canada’s ocean science division. Brown added the pace and path are not predictable, with circular currents such as those that have formed a vast “garbage patch” west of Hawaii. Radioactive contamination is not considered a hazard, as most of the debris washed out to sea before the disaster damaged a Japanese nuclear reactor. Ordinary debris can be removed, and plastics or metals recycled where possible. If material can be directly linked to the Japanese tsunami, officials ask for detailed report e-mailed to DisasterDebris@ noaa.gov, the U.S. agency co-ordinating response for Hawaii, Alaska, Washington, Oregon and California. If fuel tanks, barrels, gas cylinders or chemical storage containers are found, people are advised to stay away from them and call B.C.’s spill reporting line at 1-800-663-3456. Another major concern is invasive marine species, such as shellfish attached to a dock that recently washed ashore in Oregon. It is considered highly unlikely that human remains would still be found. Lake said updates to the developing response plan will be posted to a dedicated website, www. tsunamidebrisbc. ca, along with public advisories and information on volunteer beach clean-up efforts.
