Residents’ need to step up Eliminate attractants, reduce bear encounters AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter He paws at the cage and yawns. “This is a relatively small bear,� Conservation officer Ryane McIntyre says, shinning a penlight into the bear trap. “He’s about two or three years old.� The bear eyes us from the bars and makes a loud huffing noise. It’s intimidating, surprisingly loud and followed by a popping sound. “He’s showing us his dominance,� McIntyre explains. “It’s his way of showing his aggression.� This is not the first bear this season McIntyre has been forced to destroy, in fact it’s number 11 in a month. The animal in her trap, Tuesday morning, was caught the previous evening in the West Fraser Road area. Titled a “problem� bear, it had laid claim to a food source in a resident’s yard. That food source was a fruit tree, one of the most common attractants of wildlife – and one of the main reasons McIntyre is forced to destroy the animal. “That’s the only thing I can do,� she said. “We do not relocate the animal.� Which is why McIntyre says education is pivotal. Conservation regularly hands out information in neighbourhoods experiencing bear sightings. The two biggest concerns lie with proper garbage storage and maintaining fruit trees. “You have to hack it down or prune it right back,� McIntyre explained. As for garbage, it needs to be stored, just prior to disposal at
a designated facility. Sounds easy enough, but many residents fail to comply, resulting in Conservation handing out Dangerous Wildlife Protection Orders. The order specifies action and gives a strict timeline for compliance. If compliance is an issue, the culprit is slapped with a fine to the tune of $575. Since September, Quesnel Conservation has received more than 193 calls, from all areas of the city. “We currently have two family units in Southhills, a unit in Red Bluff, a couple of sightings in Dragon Lake, a family unit in Bouchie Lake, sightings in Hixon, Carson and Johnston Sub, West Fraser and Kersley... they’re kind of everywhere,� she said. Once bears have become a “nuisance� or have “claimed� a food source, McIntyre is
forced to attend the scene, remove the bear and destroy it. Hence the need for compliance. “People need to simply start taking responsibility,� she said. “It’s your tree, it’s your garbage, it’s your problem – clean it up.� McIntyre also recommends using bear horns, bear bangers (or pots and pans), tagging the bear with a paintball gun, or a slingshot – all as deterrents if a bear is spotted on your property. “Lastly, regarding dogs, have the dog restrained and/or call it back if it pursues the bear,� she said. “Sows will fight to the death to protect their cubs.� For more information, www. bearaware.bc.ca and www.env. gov.bc.ca/cos/info/bearaware/ index.html.

Hotel seeks $17K from Quesnel guest TIM PETRUK Kamloops This Week An alleged fraudster from Quesnel is being sued by a downtown Kamloops hotel after skipping out on a bill of more than $17,000, court documents claim. The Thompson Hotel and Conference Centre filed a notice of claim in Kamloops provincial court last week seeking $17,332.01 from Austin Smith for room fees, food, inroom movies, phone charges and laundry services it claims to have provided earlier this year.
The documents claim Smith, 55, stayed at The Thompson for about three months, from Feb. 21 to May 30. Since then, the hotel claims, the former guest has offered a string of excuses about where the money is. According to the documents, Smith has told managers at The Thompson his credit card was stolen, has claimed personal medical issues and has said his cellphone wasn’t receiving calls at various times while being hounded for payment. “Austin will text to say he’s going to

The review will analyze specific routes within the current system to determine if they are meeting community needs now, and into the future. The service review will look to optimize the existing schedule and to reallocate resources for potential expansion. Additionally, it will examine the schedule and frequency of Route #2 Red Bluff, the possible need for more service on Route #3 North Fraser and Express Bus options between Downtown Quesnel and the South Quesnel Shopping area. The Crown alleges Smith ripped off the Quesnel Lacrosse Association over a 14-month period ending in March 2009. Smith has not yet filed a response to The Thompson’s lawsuit, but he has spoken to his lawyer. He said he hopes to meet with the hotel soon.

Quesnel mayor, Mary Sjostrom has been chosen as president of the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM). “I feel very excited to be in this position,” Sjostrom said. “I’ve made my way up and gone from third vice-president to second vice-president to finally becoming president. “It’s been a goal of mine.” Having already been an executive member of UBCM for eight years, Sjostrom is looking forward to using her experience and knowledge during her term as president. “My past years at UBCM have helped me gain experience, which will be an asset as president,” she explained. “I’ve learned it’s about partnerships.” Sjostrom will have a group of assistants who will be able to attend events which would require Sjostrom to travel. “If there’s a 30 minute event in the Lower Mainland, I can send one of the assistants to that,” Sjostrom explained. “I don’t want to be on that plane once or twice a week.” Although she will try to limit her traveling within the province to be an efficient president, Sjostrom will be traveling to Ottawa in

this year’s convention, noting three out of the four first nations municipalities and districts were represented. At the 2012 UBCM convention, 222 resolutions were submitted, of which 174 were admitted for debate. Of those, 156 resolutions were endorsed, the same number as during the 2011 convention. As part of Sjostrom’s presidency, she will be creating a Twitter account, to be able to quickly relay information to those who will follow her account. “Having a Twitter account is a requirement for UBCM president,” Sjostrom explained. “I’ve never had a Twitter account, I’ve never tweeted, so I’m looking forward to using this new platform to communicate.” Although being the president of UBCM will take Sjostrom away from Quesnel, she feels she’ll be able to juggle the two commitments well. “I’m going to be very busy, but it’s not going to take away from my work as the mayor of the city of Quesnel,” she said. Incorporated by an Act of the provincial legislation in 1959, UBCM aims to “represent and serve all local governments in BC,” according to their mission statement. City upgrading transit fleet Two new “Vicinity” buses will make the Quesnel transit rounds following Council’s decision to upgrade the fleet. Council approved using the new models to replace two aging Ford “Polars” currently in the Quesnel Transit fleet that are due to be replaced in 2013. In addition, a third Polar will be replaced by a new “Arboc” model. The Vicinity is a low-floor bus with seating for 23, plus 16 standees and two wheelchair spots. It is light, quiet and delivers good fuel economy while meeting strict emissions standards. Replacing the three older models with two Vicinities and an Arboc will save the city about $6,300 annually in lease payments.

Other news • Council approved two new members being named to the Quesnel Community and Economic Development Corporation Board. Jorge Busca and Greg Andrews will serve two-year terms. • The city will offer free handyDART transit service for Veterans wishing to attend Remembrance Day ceremonies at the cenotaph on Nov. 11. The city’s transit operator, Five Five Transport, is providing a driver, while BC Transit is cost sharing the service with the city
(about $300 for the city). • The city will renew a five-year lease agreement with the Baker Creek Enhancement Society. The Society operates the Nature Education and Resource Centre on the top floor of the concession building in the West Fraser Timber Park. • Council approved a development permit that allows new paint, trim and signage for the Crosswater Retail building at 397 Kinchant Street (at the corner of St. Laurent Avenue). • Reid Street will come alive with trick-or-treaters on October 31. The Quesnel Downtown Association requested that the street be closed at 3:30 p.m.

The march begins at the 200 block of Reid Street, ends at the Safeway parking lot, and is expected to take about 30 minutes. • Council will write a letter of support for the Dakelh and Community Housing Society for a grant application designed to improve affordable housing in the community. The grant would help the organization develop a business plan and budget to further support their goals. One long-term goal is to provide more housing and support for those at risk of becoming homeless.

The Quesnel Search and Rescue Society has the green light to add two, 600-squarefoot additions to its current facility at 14 Johnston Loop. The additions will be used to add training, storage and office space to the original building, constructed in 2010. The Society operates on city land under a lease agreement and uses the old “minigolf” building for storage. That building will be demolished once the upgrades are complete.

In 2005, one of my first public policy challenges as an MLA was the provincial government’s decision to regulate BC’s “farm gate” sales of meat products. This past weekend, seven years later, I hosted a town hall (the most recent in a long line of such meetings) with our agriculture community to try and figure out where the BC Liberals are going on this issue. Farm gate sales (on-farm meat slaughter, local processing, and direct sales to customers) have contributed to our regional economy for a very long time and there has never been documentation presented to the Legislature to justify the government’s decision to regulate this activity as significantly as it initially attempted to do.
Sadly, we’ve only avoided an even more complete collapse of local BC meat production in some regions because otherwise law-abiding producers have quietly gone “underground” with their farm gate sales. In 100 Mile House there’s been a revolt against the new regulations and producers there have publicly broadcast that they will continue to carry out farm gate sales as they did before the new regulations came into effect.

The tragic result of this incompetence is that people now have significantly fewer opportunities to buy locally grown and processed meat. This is especially unfortunate during this recent, largest ever, recall of tainted beef from an Alberta megaprocessing plant.

To add insult to injury, the Liberal government’s efforts to regulate and establish an inspection regime for farm gate sales have been, to put it mildly, an unmitigated disaster from the start. The continued confusion and uncertainty surrounding the implementation and future of this legislation, along with the incremental costs imposed on this sector as a result of the regulations, has forced many local meat producers and processors out of business.
Airshow costs Council received a report regarding the cost to the city to host Skyfest 2012. In-kind support (personnel and materials) cost about $10,000, not including RCMP and fire department personnel. The city also provided $3,000, which the Quesnel SkyFest Society used to offset the price of fuel for performers. Staff reported that the event went very well, with no mishaps or major issues.

Community encouraged to spend the night Homelessness Action Week is Oct. 7 – 13. This is an opportunity provincewide to bring awareness and education to the members of our province and community on the extent of homelessness, the causes and solutions. In Quesnel, hundreds of individuals access the Emergency Shelter Program at Seasons House due to being homeless or at risk of homelessness. We serve people of all ethnicities, ages, backgrounds and sexes. In Canada, poverty is the leading cause of homelessness. Other factors leading to homelessness include a shortage in affordable and safe housing, mental illness and addictions, as well as lack of access to health and social supports individuals. Roughly half of all Canadians live in fear of poverty and 49 per cent polled believe they might be poverty stricken if they missed one or two pay cheques. Lack of affordable housing is a large concern for many people in our community. Recently,
the BC Non-Profit Housing Association released a report on the need for affordable housing across B.C. and noted that 150,000 to 200,000 new rental units will be required by 2036 based on the growing and changing population. In Quesnel, there is a long waitlist for people trying to get into affordable housing units who are struggling with very limited resources. Seasons House operates an Emergency Shelter and Transitional Housing units in Quesnel that provided food and shelter to hundreds of people in Quesnel last year. As the social problem of homelessness is very close to our organization, we thought this was a great opportunity to again educate our own community and welcome them to be a part of the solution. As an annual event and Season’s House’s annual fundraiser we are spending the night in Lebourdais Park, Oct. 12, 6 p.m. – Oct. 13, 9 a.m. We would like to invite all members of the community out to join us for this event. There will be live music, a barbeque, and a soccer game
for anyone who would like to participate. Pledge packages are available for pick-up at Seasons House for individuals willing to

anadians are not tuning into the presidential election as much as they should be. Yes, analysts have flat-out said the president’s main focus post election will be U.S. economics – jobs, taxes, debt. But as we’ve been witness to, our economy is closely linked to our neighbour’s. Which stands to reason why we should be watching what’s happening during America’s “economy election”. Case in point: Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has gone on record with his “energy independence” strategy. The platform includes close partnerships with Canada and Mexico and approval of the Keystone Pipeline in Alberta. “Mitt will approve the Keystone XL pipeline, establish a new regional agreement to facilitate cross-border energy investment, promote and expand regulatory cooperation with Canada and Mexico and institute fast-track regulatory approval processes for cross-border pipelines and other infrastructure,” Romney’s website states. This is in direct contradiction to President Barrack Obama, who is an advocate for “investing in clean energy made here in America.” The Obama team denied the 830,000 barrel-a-day pipeline, citing green concerns and opting for “home-grown” energy solutions. The plan, potentially, is working as the U.S., is on its way to being the most energy independent since 1991. Two very different opinions, on one very important topic for many Canadians. But regardless of views on pipelines, or how politics is run in the U.S. or party preference – Canadians need to pay attention to the candidate platforms, their view on the economy, their plans to move forward and whether their politics and promises are feasible. Whether we want to admit it or not, our American neighbours have a huge influence our past, present and future economics – even if we can’t vote, we should at least inform ourselves. –Autumn MacDonald, Observer

If we didn’t, pet clothing and accessories wouldn’t have become the multibillion dollar business that it now is. Yet there are some who find the entire idea ludicrous. “Anyone who lets their dog in the house is an idiot,” my older friend stated aggressively. “Dogs belong outside, not bringing nasty germs and parasites indoors.” As one of those “idiots” who not only allows my dogs in the house but on the bed as well, I bristled at his harsh remark. But with his opinion of dogs as mere farm animals, my pups and I must look as extreme to him as Sugar
and his owner did to me. The way I see it, our pets are an important part of our family and we like having them around. If they were strictly back yard dogs I’d hardly ever see them. Every home is different and what works in one family doesn’t necessarily work in another. Perhaps if my dogs weighed 100 pounds instead of 20, I’d keep them outside too. And maybe if they were just two pounds each with little leggies, I’d be purchasing a stroller or poochy purse just like Sugar’s. I’d insist on my husband walking them in that way though. FEEDBACK With thanks Editor: This Thanksgiving season, I would like to express my gratitude publicly for the many blessings in my life. First, I am overwhelmingly thankful to my ancestors who chose to settle in Canada and thereby ensure my citizenship as a Canadian. I am thankful to my parents who decided to move to Quesnel along with their family of three children 64 years ago. Thank you to this community where my late husband was born and raised and who I married 61 years ago, parenting together four children. I am grateful to the teachers and volunteer activity leaders who contributed to them becoming people with unquestionable integrity. I am thankful for the happy lives my family established here through my husband’s successful business pursuits and my opportunity to serve this community in an elected public life for many years. Heartfelt thanks to all volunteers who make this city so liveable. It is people who make the biggest difference in our lives. I am grateful for many friendships forged while pursuing my interests. Thank you to the people who cheerfully provide commercial services that we rely on. We are fortunate to have appropriate medical facilities and personnel with access to referrals in the neighbouring city of Prince George, UNBC, located there provides educational and cultural opportunities at lower cost than previously available. Thank you for all the community leadership over the past years. Thanks to our current mayor, Mary Sjostrom and her council. She has been honoured by her peers in being selected as the incoming president of the Union of B.C. Municipalities. I admire her ability to lead with grace despite some recent challenges within council. Special thanks to Maeford Assisted Living Residence, my current home and to all the staff who look so well after tenants needs. QToday looking for feedback
W
ell here we are again with exciting news on what is happening on QToday – your community programming for Quesnel. This week features hosts Allison Duddy and Nate Bello. These two will bring you the highlights on news stories which have appeared this past week provided by our partnership with the Quesnel Cariboo Observer. For more details on all of these stories you can pick up a copy of your local newspaper at various locals throughout town. Featured this week is the Not Guilty verdict of Kenneth Price. He was charged with second-degree murder after an incident in July 2009 at the brown cabins on Lewis Drive. The jury commenced deliberations Wednesday afternoon, coming back with the not guilty verdict Thursday morning at 11:30 a.m. And also from the pages of Friday’s Observer, from Black Press, a dead US inmate has been named by RCMP as the murderer of one of the 18 young women in BC’s longrunning Highway of Tears police probe. Bobby Jack Fowler died in an Oregon prison in 2006 but his DNA was matched this year to evidence from the killing of 16-year-old Colleen MacMillen while she was hitchhiking near Lac La Hache in 1974. A photo of Fowler in 1972 as well as a later photo will be displayed during this segment of the program in case it helps to jog anyone’s memory.
Anyone who knew Bobby Jack Fowler during 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s are urged to call RCMP, 1-877-543-4822. Also featured is a commentary on Independent Cariboo North MLA Bob Simpson decision to post his expenses online. In an article in Friday’s Observer, Simpson said “out of respect for taxpayers” he believes “it’s important for all MLAs to be open about expenses sooner rather than later.” He also suggests that without systems in place to ensure full transparency for MLA spending, public cynicism toward politics and politicians will only increase. Our feature this week is an interview with our correspondent Bert deVink conducted with Sean Beckett. Sept. 7, Sean walked out of his house on Vaughn Street and saw the home of Joan Huxley across the street on fire. He ran over and entered the burning house, found Huxley still inside, and got her out safely. On radio newscasts Beckett was called a hero. Another weekly feature of QToday is community calendar where you will find listing of events which are slated for the near future. You don’t want to miss out on such things as the Quesnel Art Gallery’s new show as well as Yuk Yuks and April Wine – all shown in this segment. Don’t forget: Sutton’s Shutters. Dave was out in the community this last weekend and took some photos at a couple of different events. You can take a look at these
photos of Les Dewalski playing at the farmer’s market and also a few from Crooner’s Café. An added feature this week ‘From the Archives’ will be a condensed version of an interview with local writer Lin Weich. Dorine Lamarche interviewed Lin last season and many people asked for this piece to be replayed. Look to Friday’s programming to also include a report on the Skyfest meeting Wednesday at city hall to discuss the feasibility of continuing with this popular event which is proposed for the long weekend in August 2013. Later in the month, look to QToday to do a feature on the partnering of Quesnel Community and Economic Development Corporation (QCEDC) and the Quesnel Air Quality Roundtable. The two groups are presenting a forum Oct. 12 on the link between air quality and economic development. Remember, QToday wants to hear from you. The BC Cancer Agency will be awarding its annual Community Care Award to someone who is making a difference in the lives of those living with cancer. Nominations are being accepted for anyone who provides exemplary cancer care and support in the province, including: pharmacists, nutritionists, physicians, counselors, educators, and volunteers. Nominees must work in one or more of the following areas: Direct cancer patient care, research, education or supportive services The recipient will receive a plaque, public recognition and a $300 cash award, which will be presented at the BC Cancer Agency’s Annual Cancer Conference banquet on Friday, November 30, 2012 at the Westin Bayshore Hotel in Vancouver. Women’s Fall Challenge The 19th Annual Women’s Fall challenge saw 541 women of all ages and abilities complete the event. The oldest was 87 and the youngest, four delightful six-year-olds. Organizer Cathy Walsh said this year there were more out-oftowners than ever before, including 14 members of the Tsihqot’in Tribal Council in the Chilcotin and women from Whitehorse, Yukon. She also said many participants mentioned the tremendous enthusiasm generated by the volunteers on bikes, staffing signs and watering stations and all along the route. “It was a wonderful mix of serious athletes and those having a good time for a good cause and it was a glorious day,” Walsh added. Elks donate apples

For the first time, Quesnel Elks are donating 1,000 pounds of apples to the schools in the district and local shelters including Salvation Army Food Bank, Seasons House, Grace Young Centre and Quesnel Day Program. The local lodge hopes to make it an annual event as other lodges in the region have done. Elks Lodges in Prince George, McBride, MacKenzie, Williams Lake, Vanderhoof, Burns Lake and Quesnel have partnered with Osoyoos Elks and two orchards to be able to provide this service. The orchards supply the fruit and then seven of the Elks Lodges in this region have it transported to Prince George where it is distributed to each lodge and the members donate the fruit to their respective community groups. 2012 Rotary Auction set Since 1957, Rotary Club of Quesnel has conducted an annual radio auction of goods and services, generously donated by businesses and individuals, with the net proceeds directed towards local community projects. Once again this year, the Auction will be conducted live by way of Shaw Community Channel 10 and The Wolf 100.3FM, during the evenings of November 26 – 28, and the net proceeds will be primarily contributed to the fundraising efforts of Waveriders Swim Club and Quesnel Sealions Swim Club to purchase and install a purpose-designed time clock at the Quesnel & District Recreation Centre. “Quesnel swimmers have achieved remarkable things but not having a time clock means we are still using hand-held technology which prevents us
from holding official swim meets,” Angela Swyers of Waveriders Swim Club said. “The time clock will enable all swimmers to monitor their progress and, more important, open up the opportunities to bring competition to Quesnel instead of always having to travel out of town.” “We are delighted to be a part of this project,” 2012-13 Rotary Club President Keith Corbett said. “We are impressed at how far the two swim clubs have come with this initiative, and believe our Radio-TV Auction is the ideal venue for us and the community of Quesnel as a whole to help take them the rest of the way.” To donate to the Auction, contact Rotarians Bev Haluschak 250-255-0867 or Simon Turner 250-991-7669.

Dogs bring masters to greet Rocky Mountaineer CIKC (kennel club),with all of their well behaved companions, greet people from all over the world who arrived on the Rocky Mountaineer recently. They met people from Australia, to England and Wales. It was a fun time everyone and some of the tourists took the time to come over and meet the group and the dogs. It was a good exercise for the dogs to be in a group and subjecting them to all the noise (train and traffic.) Everyone was an angel! They’d hoped for a tour of the train, but were not that lucky! Carmela Sia is a veteran gardener. From her early years in Italy, she helped her father in their garden, learning the skills and tricks to great gardening which she carried to her new home in Quesnel. This year, despite a two-month trip to her home country, Carmela still managed to harvest about 245 pounds of potatoes from eight plants she placed in her garden in May. Thanks to her neighbour, Pat Bolitho who faithfully watered her garden, when Carmela returned at the end of August everything was thriving, including the four

rows of potatoes. Along with respectable-sized tubers, Carmela was amazed to find several three-pound and twopound potatoes. “I’ve had big potatoes before, but never threepounders,� she said with a smile. Although Carmela now gardens on her own since her husband died and has downsized her gardening plot, she

still manages to grow enough produce to share with family and friends. Her Yukon Gold Cornets and a particularly prolific strain of red potatoes now sit drying on the garage floor of her Westside home. Carmela also had a bumper crop of beans, zucchini, Swiss chard, parsley, carrots and other vegetables along with fruit from her trees.

Still justifying yourself?
H
ave you ever noticed why Jesus was telling the tale of the Good Samaritan? A religious lawyer had approached him with a question. “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus answered the question with a question. “What is written in the Law?” The man made a good answer. Love God. Love your neighbour. Jesus’ response, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will live,” should have given confidence to the man. But no! It says that he tried to justify himself. We do it all the time. I’ve listened to family arguments, arguments in churches, arguments in communities and one of the things I’ve Rawlin Falk noticed is that people Lakeview Church are constantly trying to justify themselves. The problem is it never seems to help. The Bible has a different answer. It is found in Romans 5:1: “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ….” We were never intended to justify ourselves. The thief on the cross understood this. He called to the other thief, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!” Jesus’ promise that this thief would be with him in Paradise or eternal life, followed the man’s admitting that he didn’t deserve it. He had to quit trying to justify himself and trust Jesus’ death on the cross. Are you still trying to justify yourself? I think you’ll find it doesn’t work. Christ is waiting for us to call on Him like that thief. You call. He’ll hear. Rawlin Falk is an elder in the Lakeview Church in Quesnel.

Clan prepares for soccer playoffs JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter The Clan wrapped up their regular season earlier this week on a down note, with a loss to Duchess Park. The game was close, with the Condors edging out the clan 1–0 at full time. Despite the fizzle at the end, Robert McGregor, the team's coach, is happy with the team's performance. "It's a good team. We've got a good mix of grade ten, 11 and 12s," he said. Adding that the new grade ten students have stepped up, with a few regularly making the starting line-up. The team finished the regular season with a a 4-1-1 record in the Prince George high school league. A tournament down south, however, wasn't as kind to them, netting them four losses and one win. The tournament, played the last weekend of September down in Kamloops, pitted the Clan against some difficult teams from the lower mainland. In their match against Queen Elizabeth from Surrey, the Clan narrowly lost, with the score sitting at 1 - 0 at full time. North Vancouver's St Thomas Aquinas scored a last minute to ensure a 3 - 1

The soccer season, like many sports this year, got off to a rough start, depriving the team of nearly half its season in cancelled tournaments. With league playoffs, zones and provincials ahead there's still a lot of soccer to play before the end. McGregor is optimistic about the coming tournaments, noting that the team has been to the finals for the last two years, though he is a little worried about the chance of

Come skate with us JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Kids of all ages hit the ice earlier this week to learn some new moves and get their ice-legs back under them. Tuesday, the Quesnel Figure Skating Club hosted its annual 'Come Skate With Us' event for young skaters who want to get a taste of what figure skating is all about. Children from four to 12 were on the ice learning all manner of skills from power stopping to jumping with skates on. The event is aimed at children and parents who are new to the CanSkate program, giving them a free trial session. This way parents are able to see what the program entails and prospective students can experience what a lesson feels like before jumping all the way into the program. This year, the Learn To Skate program has changed its service in hopes of making it easier for parents. CanSkate, PrePOWERSkate and Advanced CanSkate will be held together. The one hour sessions will be held Tuesday and Thursday, with all the students sharing the ice. Jo-Ann Nadalin, a coach with the program, hopes this will make it easier for parents of different ages and different interests on the ice, making the program a one-stop shop for a host of training possibilities. This will also enable students who advance to keep the same schedule, only shifting
their place on the ice instead of changing their class time. The classes are open to children from four up to twelve years of age. The club will also be offering skating lessons for those teens and adults this year. The lessons will be weekly, hour-long sessions, taking place Thursday at 5:45
p.m. Besides the new training program the club is putting in place, members from the club are also training for the Autumn leaves Competition in Kamloops. Five members of the club will make their way south for the competition, including Casey
Fisher, Kayla Flanagan, Cassandra Greenwood, Carmen Huang and Olivia Marleau. They will be skating in Kamloops from Oct. 12-14. For more information on the club and the various classes, information and registration forms are available at the Twin Arenas.
