Concrete work begins on CARS drag strip By Treena Mielke A project in the works for several years at Central Alberta Raceways (CARS) in Rimbey got underway last week. On Sept. 25 concrete was poured for the 700 feet by 30 feet Buist Motors lane of the drag strip. Cement was poured on the Kenzle Ventures lane Sept. 27, which completed the first half of the quarter mile drag strip. Dale Barr, events/sponsorship co-ordinator for CARS,

said the overall cost of the project is estimated at $1 million. Funding has come from a provincial Community Facility Enhancement Program grant, fundraising, municipal, personal and corporate sponsors. Barr said sponsorship for signs, pit parking and the drag strip itself is needed to complete the project. Jeff Makofka, chairman of CARS, said completing the first leg of the drag strip means it could be used for shoot-

outs that are now being held on a county road. He said CARS is popular with drag racers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I race all over Alberta and it seems all the drivers want to come here. Beebe moves up to take over as assistant CAO for Town of Rimbey By Treena Mielke The office of the assistant CAO for the Town of Rimbey was not empty long before a replacement stepped in, ready, willing and eager to assume her new responsibilities. Melissa Beebe, the former executive assistant to CAO Tony Goode, has taken over as the second in command at the town office, filling a vacancy left by Ryan Maier, who moved to Athabasca as CAO of that community. Beebe, who has been employed by the town since 2003, is looking forward to the challenges of her new position. “I’m a bit nervous,” she said. “It’s definitely a new learning curve stepping into a new role, but I think it will be very interesting.” Beebe enjoys municipal politics and working in

a small town. “This is grassroots politics and it is where changes and progress can happen.” The new assistant CAO plans to be flexible, open and think outside the box to ensure she helps make a “positive difference” in the community. “Moving forward is good, but you need to combine the new with the old.” Originally from Big River, Sask., Beebe lived in Edmonton for several years before moving to the Leedale area. She completed an office administration diploma at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology and worked in Edmonton in administration with construction-related companies. She is married to Garry Taylor and the couple has two girls; Jessica, who is in Grade 11 in Rimbey, and Jazmine, who attends Red Deer College.

Council lobbies for seniors housing By Treena Mielke A proposal before the provincial government asking for approval to go ahead with a multi-million dollar aging in place residence for Rimbey could get the green light within a couple of weeks. MLA Joe Anglin, who met with Rimbey town council at its Sept. 24 meeting, said the proposal is in the hands of Municipal Affairs Minister Doug Griffiths. Anglin encouraged the mayor and the council to meet with the minister at the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association annual convention last week in Edmonton. “We have a desperate need for a new facility,” he said. “This one means a lot of me,” he added. “I’m lobbying and I need the mayor and council to get the message out there as well.” Rimoka Housing Foundation chair Paul McLauchlin, who was also in attendance at the meeting with board member Keith Beebe, is confident the proposal will go ahead. “The question is ‘when’ as opposed to ‘if,’” he said. McLauchlin told councillors he wanted to meet with them to garner their input regarding the best possible use for Parkland Manor when the new residence was in place. I was married and had a couple of kids before I came to the amazing realization that not everyone sat glued to their television screen every Saturday night watching Hockey Night in Canada. I grew up being fed a steady diet of the Original Six. Dessert was, of course, Foster Hewitt and the Saturday night hockey game. And as winter moaned and groaned and the wind whipped up piles of white fury against the walls on those long ago Saturday nights, me and my brothers and my dad sat snug and warm in our little old house with the magic of our little old TV. What? No Saturday night hockey game? Unthinkable. However, when I left childhood and innocence behind and the little black and white TV got relegated to an antique store somewhere, I learned not everyone invited hockey night in Canada into their living room every Saturday night. The NHL lockout means today’s addicted hockey fans won’t get their fix, but in reality, lots of people out there don’t really care. For them, they have other issues that spell anger and disillusionment. Health care. Job security. Sickness. I pondered these questions the other day as I sat behind my steering wheel looking out my cracked windshield at a day that was deceptively beautiful. How can this perfect kaleidoscope of brilliance

exist when there is so much wrong with the world I ponder. I arrived at my daughter’s house feeling disillusioned and sad and very, very old. He met me at the door. My grandson, the one with hair the color of burnished wheat and Treena Mielke eyes so blue they rival On The Other Side the sky. “Run to the top of the hill with me, grandma,” he said as a greeting. “What?” I replied, thinking, but not saying, “I’m old, tired and disillusioned. I can’t do that.” He looked at me and grinned and I knew that he knew, no matter how old, tired and disillusioned I felt, I would never say no to him. He knew it and I knew it so away we went across the street to the hill. And, as fall, with all its glory swirled around us, I kicked off my shoes and my inhibitions simultaneously and ran. I was pleased with myself that I made it to the top without huffing and puffing too much, but my self congratulations were cut short because of this earnest little voice that said, “you have three

choices now grandma, you can run down, I can roll down and you can chase me, or we can both roll down.” “What?” I said, breathing hard, but once again I complied. “Let’s roll,” I said. And so we did. And as I rolled the sky and the leaves and the bright sunny day got all mixed up and the faster I rolled the more mixed up they became. And, the more I rolled, and the more mixed up everything got, the more I laughed. When I started to roll down that hill, I was feeling tired, stressed and very, very old. When I got to the bottom, I had dissolved into a helpless fit of giggles. And, nothing had changed. There still is a lockout. Sylvan Lake still has no urgent care. Politicians still lie. Disease and sickness do not go away no matter how many walks people go on. But, thanks to a little boy with hair the color of burnished wheat and a smile that outshines the sun, I learned to remember what I had momentarily forgotten: the joy, the absolute joy of ‘just playing.’ And that, despite amazing scientific discoveries regarding health care, laughter truly is the best medicine of all. And, for that, I am, and always will be, immensely grateful.

Lougheed had a way of leading Albertans A lot of people who knew Peter Lougheed have had a lot to say about the great former Alberta premier who died recently at age 84. I met him on a few occasions on the campaign trail and was impressed with his ability to reach out and connect with Albertans of every stripe — from farmers to lawyers and everyone in between. A King Ralph with polish and without liquid fortification. I’m sure I wrote some editorials criticizing his government over the years but I can’t remember what they might have been about. The eulogists are telling us he did no wrong. For me, his influence is captured at a political rally somewhere in the old Rocky Mountain House constituency, probably a hall in Eckville or Leslieville. We all stood to sing O Canada to open the meeting and in his best Sunday Baptist singing voice the premier led the group — forgetting, or choosing, I’m not sure — to sing the old words to the national anthem. Not wanting to drown out or embarrass him, we all mumbled along, trying to catch up to where he was taking us.

Something Albertans are still doing. Grudge Match 3: Millionaires vs Billionaires It’s hard to feel sorry for the millionaire players or the billionaire owners in this latest NHL lockout. The team owners are George Brown running a business and Off the Record the players are unionized employees who want to be fairly compensated. It doesn’t help matters that the owners need commissioner Gary Bettman to protect them from themselves. The professional game would be in better shape if the owners could keep their egos in check and refuse to offer bonehead contracts to players, such as Roberto Luongo’s 12-year, $64 million deal; Ilya Kovalchuk’s 15-year, $100 million paycheque; and Shea Weber’s 14-year, $110 million stipend.

Personally, I think the players shouldn’t have guaranteed contracts and could be cut for non-performance, much as professional football payers are. I expect that will never happen. And is it not somewhat disingenuous for NHL superstars to cry the blues about needing to earn a living wage and then head off to Europe to take jobs away from has-beens and wannabes playing for club teams? I remember being in a theatre in 1995 during the first lockout and Oilers goalie Bill Ranford was sitting behind me, telling all who could hear him, that he was holding out because he needed more than his paltry $2-point-whatever million annual salary to care for his family. It’s true, if you won a million bucks in the lotto at age 29 and your wife stayed home to look after the kids, it would be gone before the kids graduated high school. Maybe your wife should go back to teaching school. Ranford made $12 million in his NHL career, more than half of it after that lockout. I expect he’s doing just fine.

Amnesty group to hold vigil By Treena Mielke Rimbey Group of Amnesty International will do its part to remember and pay tribute to murdered and missing Aboriginal women and girls by holding a candlelight vigil. The vigil is to be held Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Beatty House Park and everyone is invited to attend. Amnesty International is one of the organizations supporting the vigil, a national movement started several years ago by the Native Women’s Association of Canada. Florence Stemo said Rimbey will be one of more than 100 communities across the country where people will gather to remember and honor the lives of the missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls. “This vigils help support their grieving families and provide opportu-

nities for healing and to foster awareness of this shameful social issue with the hope for change.” Following the outdoor ceremony, those in attendance are invited together inside the Beatty House for discussion and light refreshments. Following the vigil, those who wish to do so may sign a petition addressed to Prime Minister Stephen Harper asking for a national inquiry into the epidemic of violence that plagues the lives of Canadian Aboriginal women and girls. The Native Women’s Association of Canada also invites the public to light a candle at their virtual candlelight vigil. The www.october4th.ca website was created as a place of hope and healing. Anyone who visits the site will be invited to light a candle and leave a dedication.

Seniors housing proposed Continued from page 4 “We will do everything we can to move the project forward,” he said. “It’s great that we’re all on board and moving in the same direction.” Earlier this year, Ponoka County council, agreed to purchase 8.5 acres of land in Johnson’s Estates northwest of the Rimbey Community Centre to be used for an aging in place centre. The land deal has not yet been finalized, but McLauchlin said there are only a few conditions to be ironed out before it is completed. The title of the land will remain in the county’s name until approval for the senior’s housing project is obtained from the province. The town has agreed to pay approximately $170,000 for the cost of

installing the water and sewer lines from the nearest main to the property. Rimbey’s accommodations for seniors are Parkland Manor and Kansas Ridge 1 and 11. Parkland Manor was built in 1972 and has 63 rooms. Kansas Ridge I was built in 1978 and has 16 one-bedroom living accommodations and Kansas Ridge II was constructed in 1984 and has 20 units. Anglin noted the hallways in Parkland Manor are too narrow to take patients out on stretchers, there is no fire suppressant system and the kitchen is too small. The roof, which has leaked in the past, has been repaired, but the building is aging and continually needs upgrades.

COPs socialize with Citizens on Patrol at legion hall Rimbey RCMP had a busy week investigating nearly 50 files. Highlights of the week include break and enters, impaired driving, assault, drugs and other criminal matters. Out of touch without IPod A distraught youth reported his IPod Touch had been stolen from the skateboard park in Rimbey on Sept. 21. It is described as white in a purple case. If your child came home this week with an IPod and said they “borrowed” it from a friend, please give us a call. It would be nice to get this young lad’s IPod back before he goes into video game withdrawal. ATV thieves spooked At approximately 2 a.m. Sept. 23, two bandits attempted to steal an ATV from a rural residence near Township Road 414. They were discovered up to no good by the owner of the property who spooked them off. Police were called and patrolled the area. The subsequent investigation is still ongoing and charges are pending in the matter. The two midnight shoppers can drop by the detachment at any time to provide their statement or wait and be the first to try on a new pair of silver bracelets we just picked up for this special occasion.

CSIs, dogs help track theives On Sept. 24, at approximately 3 a.m., two thieves went on a crime spree. First, they broke into a gas station, and then broke into another commercial building in town. The two criminals then decided to prowl farmyards on Lockhart Road. They entered onto properties, rifled through unlocked cars and stole items of value. Rimbey Mounties immediately began the investigation with the assistance of the police dog section and a forensic team brought in from Red Deer. It wasn’t long before the vigilant Rimbey members had suspects and began to round them up. Two adult males have been identified as being responsible for the shenanigans and have been charged accordingly with a long list of Criminal Code charges. One of the adults, a previous resident of Rimbey, is well known to police. Can’t be in two courts at once On a recent court date, a 51-year-old resident of Stony Plain was sentenced to 90 days jail time. He had already served the time awaiting court for oilfield thefts in Rimbey and was released from custody. The man left court in a rush to make another court commitment back in Stony Plain to deal with

other matters. This man must have been in a hurry for justice because he was caught going 170 km/h on Highway 20 just north of town. He may have been late for court — it’s a long walk from Rimbey. Midnight mower At 3 a.m., on Sept. 13, an alert traveller noted an elderly male laying in a ditch north of town. It turns out the male was suffering from dementia and thought that he was there to mow the ditches. Barkeep assaulted in brawl A bar brawl took a turn for the worse when the sober owner was violently assaulted. Charges of assault causing bodily harm are pending against a 23-year-old Rimbey man. Habitual thief charged A 21-year-old Rimbey resident is unemployed and facing charges after he was caught with his hand in the till. A subsequent investigation revealed this man had stolen from his employer on several prior occasions. CPR works On Sept. 19 Rimbey RCMP were called to assist EMTs after a man collapsed at the Co-op. Fortunately,

Social networking brings educators together By Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye More and more it seems technology is an integral part of our everyday lives, so much so schools are looking at how technology and education can work together. Working with Central Alberta Regional Consortium Wolf Creek Public Schools hosted their second 21st Century Technology & Learning Symposium Sept. 21 at Terrace Ridge School in Lacombe. More than 300 Teachers, administrators and other educators attended the symposium to find what apps and software and other technologies teachers use to enhance students’ learning. Many of the classes were presented by teachers in the school division who have put into practice learning with technologies available to them. Keynote speaker was Dean Shareski with Discovery Education, who has been able to take social network applications such as Twitter to connect with educators around the world with what he calls the Human Network. It was in his first year of teaching that he realized how teachings can sometimes be and isolated experience. Anytime he could glean information from a peer on how they were able to overcome a situation or have a new technique succeed were valued experiences for him. “Anything I could get from everybody was just gold.” With new technologies and social networking Shareski believes developing a network can bring lessons in education to more teachers. “As tools, as educators, we have a tremendous opportunity.”

With more than one million views on his web page, 1013 blog posts (with more than 5,000 comments), more than 12,000 photos posted and 64,352 tweets on his Twitter account, Shareski showed ways he has been able to use these networks to become tools for teaching. He gave a brief rundown of what the different social media outlets are used for. “We talk about Twitter, that’s basically ‘I’m eating bacon.’ Now, Facebook is ‘I like bacon.’ LinkedIn, ‘I have skills in eating bacon,’ and Four Square is ‘Where I eat bacon.’ You Tube is ‘Watch you eat bacon.’ Instagram is a photo of eating bacon. Pinterest is ‘Here’s a recipe of eating bacon,” he joked. “That’s one way of looking at it, but it’s a lot more complex than that.” He feels educators need to have a working knowledge of these networks. “We need to be, if not users of it, at least have an understanding of how it works.” He suggests it is problematic if people do not understand what the symbols mean in a network such as Twitter. Technology is more available to people because of smartphones and tablet PCs. “I would venture to guess that less than one per cent of that (people in the room) don’t have a camera on hand,” stated Shareski. He also feels his network is more than just talking about bacon, but more around a community sharing information. He used the example of teacher Tamara Awad Lobe, who gave her students an assignment where they had to

find another way to research information without the Internet. He feels it gave students research experience, but took issue with one quote in the Globe and Mail article: “At this age, they get stuck on Wikipedia being the answer to everything. They forget that people can be a really great resource.” He was quick to point out that people wrote Wikipedia. “She’s missing the notion that the web is not a place of information.” Shareski told attendees of his desire to learn how to play the guitar and how he tweeted the information. A music teacher in the United States got her students to post videos on the lessons they learned and give suggestions on his techniques. A website was built for him to follow along. “That’s a real different level of communication than just some book or video,” he stated. Ownership is another topic Shareski spoke about, especially when it has become unclear who owns what. His suggestion was to buy domains with their name. “It’s worth your while to stake that and own that place.” Being marketable is also valuable and the larger the network the better opportunity to sell yourself, explained Shareski. The more information that is shared gives educators a better opportunity to learn from their own situations, which he feels can be a vehicle to enhance a student’s education experience.

This helps the teacher decide where to go with the lesson and to determine if some one-on-one time is needed, or if there is something the entire class can learn. Supporting 14 languages, generally students who do not speak English can receive support from the program. For those who don’t speak one of the other languages, the program also has visual clues to assist a student, explained Burns. A pre-test is conducted usually on grades 1 to 6 students to find the their skill level. Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students are given the opportunity to try out the program, which will adjust to their level of learning. Learning and technology have become more intertwined and software companies are designing programs that adapt to a student’s learning needs. During Wolf Creek Public Schools and Central Alberta Regional Consortium second 21st Century Technology & Learning Symposium Sept. 21 at Terrace Ridge School in Lacombe, educators and administrators had a chance to see different programs at work. One of those was called Imagine Learning, a media-based program to help students with reading, and to learn English. Originally designed for students learning English as a Second Language, it also helps reluctant readers, explained Mark McWhinnie, assistant superintendent of technology services with WCPS. “It uses technology and adjusts to their needs,” he said. As the program adjusts to a student’s needs, some might use it for a few weeks, whereas others could use if for a matter of months. “It’s just good

IPads integrated into teachers’ classrooms By Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye It wasn’t long ago an elementary education was mainly from books: now you can find IPads and other electronic devices among a teacher’s toolkit. IPads in Elementary Classroom was one of the presentations at the second 21st Century Technology & Learning Symposium sponsored by Wolf Creek Public Schools and Central Alberta Regional Consortium Sept. 21 at Terrace Ridge School in Lacombe. Presented by Nathan McEntee, Ponoka Elementary School Grade 4 teacher, and Tia Grah, Rimbey Elementary School Grade 6 teacher, they walked educators through how to research an app and even to use it in a lesson. Collaboration was something McEntee feels is an important part of working with technology. “We are learning with you.” A lesson plan is an important step when considering the use of an IPad. “To effectively use apps in your classroom you must first decide what you want to accomplish,” he explained. They pointed out some benefits of working with education apps and IPads: • There is instant feedback from apps on how students do. • They can provide a way to write storyboards or offer an avenue for artwork. • Textbooks can be created with and used for later classes, some textbooks are available as an app, but a site license might be needed. • They offer notetaking capabilities. “Lots of times there’s a lite version too that you can try and if you really enjoy it and you know you’re going to use then always go for the lite version before

you pay for the app,” suggested Grahn. Presenters asked teachers to work with a team that teaches at the same level and bring one suggestion of an app found from some websites such as www. apps4ed.com. Mark McWhinnie, assistant superintendent of technology services, said students as young as Grade 2 are bringing devices to school to enhance their learning experience but the purpose of the presentations is not to promote a specific product. “It should be less about the technology and more about the integration of technology.” Most students use tablets, IPads and other devices to connect with friends and family, explained McWhinnie. He feels teachers are seeing the value of having these same devices be a part of a student’s education. “It’s about using tools that they are accustomed to and using in their everyday life,” he explained. For McWhinnie, the goal is also to teach students positive behaviors in a digital world. “We’re teaching students also at the same time how to use it appropriately.” Classrooms will use the Internet and social networking sites such as Twitter to tell about their learning, which gives parents an insight into their child’s education. “Parents are increasingly being able to see what their kids are learning,” he explained. The goal for symposium organizers was for teachers to be able to continue their learning as well as educate their students.

If there is a challenge in an area, the software gives tips to guide a student to an answer. Lois Spate, principal of Ponoka Elementary School, feels programs such as Imagine Learning will be an asset to teachers. “To me this is cutting edge. We need to keep up-to-date as teachers, especially how to infuse technology into the curriculum, how to engage our students using technology. These kind of symposiums are key for teachers,” she said. She feels teachers are not as familiar with technology as students. “I’ve seen kids on this program for example, they just go in and click.” With symposiums such as this, she hopes to take back lessons and apply them to her school. She enjoyed seeing teachers presenting what worked for them in their classes.

This allows students on the trip to remain up to date on their continuing education unit (CEU) credit requirements. These credits enable to the school to receive funding, which will be put towards the trip, said Robertson. Robertson contacted EF Tours, an educational tour company in Toronto,

when he decided he wanted the trip for the school. “We were looking for a tour that’d wouldn’t be too culturally horrible, they wouldn’t have to learn a new language,” said Robertson. “We decided California was a good first trip. The first parent meeting for the trip will be in November. Robertson is also looking into fundraising to help offset the cost of the trip. He believes it will cost approximately $3,000 per student.

Board supports learning conference The board of trustees have decided to give $25,000 to support the Leading and Learning Conference. The conference will feature Dave Edyburn, a professor in the Department of Exceptional Education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, who focuses on how technology can enhance teaching, learning and performance. Also present will be Angela Maiers, who’s worked as a teacher, reading specialist, and special programs facilitator; Dawn Reithaug, an educational and behavioral consultant; Gordon Porter, a consultant, trainer, researcher and teacher; and Jim Warford, who serves as senior advisor and keynote speaker for Dr. Bill Daggett’s, International Center for Leadership in Education. A motion was also approved that the board would also attend the event. Literacy program and task force A task force and program is in the works to help First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) and other students with literacy and other academic struggles. “I share this with the greatest humility;

we’ve seen across the province of Albert and Canada, our First Nations’ students are not performing as well as we hoped they would,” said Jacobs. He believes the students’ struggles with literacy could stem from factors such as a Cree background, where literacy learning may not mirror what is taught in schools. ‘That happens to a lot of our students as well,” said Jacobs, referring to literacy problems. Jacobs has met with the principals of the Ponoka Outreach School, Diamond Willow Middle School, Ponoka Elementary School and Ponoka Composite High School to discuss the program and who should be on the task force; students, parents and teachers. “What are the problems as they see them?,” said Jacobs. He wants a lot of input build the program. Jacobs has also asked the school board to pool funds from Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC), funding students with First Nations background already receive from the province as well as other funds at their disposal for the program. Parking lot repair bids refused Wolf Creek Public School Board of

trustees has refused all the bids made to repair the parking lot at Ponoka Composite High School. When the school board called for bids on the project they had two options in mind. The first was repairing the lot in a traditional way and the other was building a cellular containment structure using cloth and gravel, and a paved surface. The estimated cost was $500,000. However, the lowest bids for options one and two surpassed the estimate. A traditional repair was set to cost approximately $574,000 and option two was around $533,000. “I find that these numbers are quite high,” said trustee Bob Huff. “Especially when we have concerns about class sizes and concerns about buses.” Secretary-treasurer Joe Henderson said that another possible option was to build the containment structure with a gravel pad on top. “It would allow us to use the parking lot and it wouldn’t sink out of sight.” There was also mention of moving parking behind the school and expanding to accommodate. However, Henderson said expanding would cost as much as repairing the current one.

Retired RCMP officer drowns The body of recently retired RCMP Staff Sgt. Russell Gillespie, was recovered at Twin Lakes near Breton shortly after 4 p.m. Sept. 23. The search concluded after hours of searching by response agencies, RCMP members and three recreational divers who offered to help. RCMP spokesman Staff Sgt. Shawn LeMay said Gillespie was scuba diving, when he experienced difficulties. While immediate

GRINDE October 24, 1950 ~ September 22, 2012 John Andrew Grinde of Bluffton, Alberta passed away peacefully at his home with some of his family by his side on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at the age of 61 years. John A. Grinde. There were many sides to this wonderful man, and we probably all knew different ones: family man, friend, farmer, veterinarian, paddler, outdoorsman, businessman, troublemaker. An incredibly hard-working, dedicated sort who had passions and interests too numerous to list. A Rimbey local his whole life, John loved his farm, his family, and his community. Like any farmer, he was tough, chose never to complain but make the best of his circumstances. Mistakes became learning opportunities, experience led to growth. He found joy each and every day in simple pleasures: early mornings, freshly baked bread, teasing his family, sharing a fine scotch with good friends. He lived with a curiosity not unlike a child’s, an insatiable appetite for learning and discovery. Perhaps this is why kids always took to him, a reason why he and his first grandson were so close. John spent endless hours reading non-fiction; eclectic subscriptions were scattered amongst stacks of books about Native American history, early western explorers’ travels, globalization, economics, agriculture and the evolution of science. These diverse interests were reflected in the wide range of people who enjoyed his mentorship and friendship. John himself explored many a place, both close to home (in a canoe or via Shank’s pony) and further abroad (following his roots to Norway, adventuring on the East Coast). In the last four years he fought cancer, but found acceptance as well. Rather than seeing disability, John looked at what could still be done and kept himself busy and active. He lived with grace and died where he had always wanted to - in his own bed. A fair and generous spirit, an old coyote that will never be forgotten. John will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife, Ginny; two sons, Assar Grinde and Aidan Grinde, both of Bluffton; and two daughters, Mabyn (Brad) Lockhart of Viking, Alberta and their two sons, Torrin and Corbin; and Heather Grinde of Calgary. He will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by four brothers, Bob (Audrey) Grinde of Rimbey; Harold (Laura) Grinde of Rimbey; Adam (Kay) Grinde of Teslin, Yukon; and Nels Grinde (Laura Clark), also of Rimbey; and two sisters, Joan (Keith) Neilson of Kingston, Ontario; and Anne (Harvey) Jessup of Whitehorse, Yukon; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his parents, George and Mary Grinde. A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of John’s Life was held at the Rimbey Community Centre, Rimbey on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Deborah Laing officiating. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer. If friend’s desire, memorial tributes in John’s Memory may be made directly to the charity of one’s choice. Catherine Audrey Casey (nee Toth) of Rimbey, Alberta, better known as “Cathy” or “Cat”, passed away suddenly on Sunday, September 16, 2012 at the age of 42 years. Cathy moved to Rimbey in 2010, where she met the man of her dreams and was later married on September 24, 2011 in Port Howe, Nova Scotia to Adam Casey. Cathy was a loving and caring person. She loved life, and loved her children and family very much. Cathy also took great pleasure in the outdoors; and enjoyed camping, quadding, skidooing, gardening, and working out in the shop with her husband, Adam. Most of all, she loved spending quality time with Adam and Bryden, and thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with her mother, Joyce and her father, Stefan when they came to Rimbey to visit. Cathy was a loving wife, daughter, mother, and sister. She will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her family and friends. Cathy is survived by her loving husband, Adam; her stepson, Bryden; her father-in-law, Elmer Casey; her parents, Joyce VanHorn and Stefan Toth; her four beautiful children, Steven, Jessie, Ashley, and Kristen; and two grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Inez, Avis, Rosa, and Cleo; in addition to many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and friends. Cathy was predeceased by her sister, Ona. Beauty and creativity winning combination for gardeners By Treena Mielke

A delightful mix of beautiful flowers displayed in a creatively designed yard has turned out to be a prize-winning combination for a Rimbey couple. Keith and Glenna Spelrem are this year’s winners of the yard and garden contest held by the Rimbey and District Horticulture Club. “Their well designed and carefully planned Rimbey town yard has an appealing Spanish flair to it,” said spokesperson Diana Pearman. “The stone and brickwork is breathtaking: meandering paths, large fish pond and water garden complete with water fall and even a building the owner had constructed to perfect scale from an appealing picture on a calendar.” Pearman said there are delightful surprises in the yard everywhere including lovely sculptures and an outdoor fireplace.” Glenna Spelrem was pleased with the recognition but believes there are many beautiful yards and gardens in Rimbey. “There’s a lot of very nice properties here.” Speller and her husband do all the landscape and design work themselves as well as care for the flowerbeds and mulching the flowerbeds early in the spring is her secret to keeping the weeds under control. Eight gardens were nominated for the contest, and Darlene Polachic, who writes for Gardens West Magazine, came along as part of the group who viewed the yards earlier this summer and helped select the 2012 winner. Although there was only one winner, Pearman said all nominees deserve to be recognized for their talent and creativity. Doreen Glanfield’s creative use of space in the side yard between two town homes was especially creative. “She uses that space to its absolute maximum, creating a tranquil and secluded oasis with a patterned pathway of decorative colored shale and rock, mixed in with shade loving hostas and ferns.” Dorothy Stuart excellently uses her small condo yard, Pearman said. “She accepts the challenge of growing some hard to grow plants as well. The feeders in her yard are a wonderful example of the symbiotic relationship we can have with our environment.” Pearlman described Annette Devries’ back-

And last, but certainly not least, Pearlman said Bonnie Olsen’s perennials, annuals and trees are artistically arranged and her beautiful deck plantings full of appealing color and texture. “Although there was only one winner, there was many things to be learned and admired from each and every yard and all nominees were very much appreciated,” she said.

Cemetery maintenance man retires after 39 years By June Norvila After being the hired maintenance man for the Bentley Cemetery Board for 39 years, 84-year-old Martin Schneider has decided it is time for him to retire and turn over the reins, or work that is, to someone younger. Cutting five acres of grass was taking much longer and with more headstones has become more painstaking. As of this spring, Martin’s grandsons, 16-year-old Carson Schneider and 13-year-old brother Ty, are now taking on the responsibility under the guidance and watchful eye of Martin, who has been particular, taking great pride and gaining much gratification from what he did from 1973 until 2012. Carson has been accompanying his grandfather since he was about five years old so he is familiar with what has to be done, such as picking rocks and scrubbing stones and he has already developed a feeling of pride in the area. Martin did all the maintenance work at the Bentley Cemetery including grass cutting, tree trimming and planting, land leveling, fence building and mending, cleaning up after storms, and any other jobs that needed doing. The land owned by the cemetery association has expanded about three times, meaning there was extra

work to do at those times. Records are sketchy as the old records were destroyed in a house fire when Mitch Thevenaz was on the board, but the area was started around 1901 judging by dates on stones. There are now about 1,100 graves and 1,000 headstones The main cairn was built about 1934 by Bob and Charlie Woolgar and was since rebuilt about two years ago when cement was giving way and stones had fallen out. The wrought iron gate now in place at the main gate was built by Louis and Carl Wine and installed with help from volunteers. On the cemetery board are Derek Dickau (for 22 years), Bob Garries, Bill Garries and Oran Cabelka. “It is one of the nicest cemeteries in the area,” said Dickau, as he explained some people buy plots in Bentley just because of the location and how well it is looked after. “I liked the work. I like the area. I had no special favorite part. I just like it all,” says Schneider as he reflects back and wonders why in some instances some others don’t treat the area with the respect it deserves. He and his family continue to keep an eye out for vandals and try to protect the place, and hope others will, too.

Chinese visit Brinks’ pulse fields By June Norvila There were some special foreign visitors at a farm in the Rainy Creek area. A recent tour hosted by the Alberta Pulse Growers Commission highlighting pulse crops was attended by a Chinese delegation of 10, including four researchers, as well as about 40 other central Alberta farmers. The group met at the Grace Lutheran Church west of Bentley and was escorted around to see faba bean crops in the area surrounding the church. Some staff from the Alberta Pulse Growers Commission gave informative talks, and discussions and a barbecue followed in the church basement after the field tour. The Chinese also wanted to see a real Canadian farm and were invited to the farm of Harvey Brink and family where they saw the Brink setup. “They really enjoyed the tour of feedlot, farm machinery, grain bins and house area. They asked many questions and were fascinated at how big everything in Canada was,” stated Coby Brink, Harvey’s wife.

The Chinese delegation included four research scientists from the Department of Agriculture in China (two men and two women), one of whom was also the translator and has been in contact with scientists at the Lacombe Research Station. The Chinese are researching how to make faba beans/pulses a viable crop for farmers in their own country. They are working hard to make farming sustainable and have a mandate to feed their own people. Harvey Brink has been asked to speak at the commission’s general meeting in Three Hills in November about his experience growing, harvesting and marketing his faba beans. The Alberta Pulse Growers Commission represents 4,700 growers of dry peas, beans, lentils and chickpeas. Their vision is to have Alberta pulses recognized by consumers as environmentally friendly, healthy, nutritious, and recognized by all producers as being an essential element in a sustainable cropping system, noted Jennifer Blair, the communications co-ordinator for the Alberta Pulse Growers Commission.

Buffalo visits Bentley By June Norvila A large grass-chomping visitor was in Bentley recently. Randy Giesbrecht from Red Deer was back with his “best friend,” two-year-old Beulah. He raised the now 800-pound-plus buffalo from birth, bottle feeding her special milk until she was more than six months old and giving her lots of extra special care. “I try to work with her everyday,” he says. He wants to keep her used to people and noises because he makes appearances with her at senior lodges and special events. “I trust her and she trusts me,” he says as Beulah sucks on his fingers like a month-old calf. He does ride Beulah, but admits he has been dumped a few times. On occasion Beulah has sported the Bentley Generals hockey team banner. Giesbrecht has made other visits to town before to ride around as practice. He no longer is allowed to ride Beulah in Red Deer.
