Pilots Bill Findlay and Ray Horton perform one last water drop demonstration before permanently parking the Firecat air tanker aircraft at the Canadian Museum of Flight on Friday. The retired air tanker which originally served as a CS2F Tracker on the HMCS Bonaventure aircraft carrier, was donated to the museum by Conair Aviation.

Crowds at the Canadian Museum of Flight witnessed a piece of history on Friday morning as a retired Conair Firecat Air Tanker made its final flight through Langley skies. Two fly-overs and a ceremonial water drop over Langley Regional Airport marked its last journey before the red plane was parked at the Canadian Museum of Flight. The Firecat, which was donated to the flight museum by Abbotsford-based

Conair Aviation, is the greatest acquisition the centre has ever made, according to Bruce Friesen, vice president of the Canadian Museum of Flight. “Our job as a museum is to bring British Columbia’s aviation history into the future, to make sure it doesn’t disappear,” said Friesen. “This plane is B.C. aviation history. For all of us at the museum, this is perhaps the most useful exhibit we could possibly have. We are just so excited.” Originally built as a CS2F Tracker aircraft in the 1950s, the plane was used to hunt submarines off the deck of the

Royal Canadian Navy’s HMCS Bonaventure during the Cold War. When the military retired the fleet in the 1970s, Conair bought the planes and converted them to Firecats to battle fires. They were retired from service in Canada this year, although some are still operating in France. Obtaining one of the planes for the museum has been a 10-year process for the plane’s final pilots, Bill Findlay, a long-time volunteer with the museum, and Ray Horton, a pilot with Conair for more than 30 years. The pilots, who are also next-door neighbours, made it their ultimate goal to
have a Firecat in Langley as soon as the planes were retired. They wanted to bring the “airplane home to our original home,” since Conair Aviation originated from Langley’s Skyway Air Services, which operated out of Langley Airport in the 1960s. “It means so much to the museum to have the aircraft here,” Findlay said. “It’s just the thrill of a lifetime. I’ve been involved in flying for 45 or 50 years and this is right up there with one of those big, big days.” continued, PAGE 5

Beef recall list a long one Nikki Sixx Jeff Nagel Black Press
More B.C. retailers have been added to an expanded and lengthy list of outlets affected by the recall of Albertaprocessed beef that may be contaminated with e.coli bacteria. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency now lists virtually every major grocer in B.C. as well as various smaller ones as having received recalled raw beef that came from the XL Foods plant in Brooks, Alberta. Affected products include
steaks, roasts, ground beef, sausages and soup bones. For details on the recalled products, including identifying UPC codes and best-before dates, see: http://inspection. gc.ca/recalls_XLFoods More than 1,500 products are now subject to the expanded recall, the largest affecting beef in Canadian history. There have been no confirmed e.coli cases in B.C. linked to XL Foods, but there have been cases in Alberta. Consumers unsure if beef they have is affected are urged by the CFIA to check with their local retailer or throw it out.
E.coli-contaminated food may not look or smell spoiled but can cause serious illness — including seizures, strokes or kidney damage — as well as death in severe cases. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. CFIA officials shut down the XL Foods plant and say it won’t reopen until a range of corrective actions are taken. The CFIA said the intricate web of food distribution systems allowed wide distribution of the recalled beef. Some went from XL to other distributors where it was

processed further before going to retailers. Some small retailers and meat markets also repackaged the XL beef, leaving it unlabelled or unbranded and more difficult to identify as recalled. E.coli was first identified in beef trimmings from XL on Sept. 4 but the CFIA did not declare an immediate recall because it wasn’t thought to have reached the marketplace. The first public alerts weren’t issued until Sept. 16. The recall affects virtually every major grocery retailer in Langley.

MP takes aim at sex selection
Natasha JoNes Times Reporter
Langley Conservative MP Mark Warawa has introduced a motion in the House of Commons condemning discrimination against females in sex-selective pregnancy termination. “Recent studies have shown that the practice of aborting females in favour of males is happening in Canada,” Warawa said, adding that 92 per cent of Canadians believe sex-selective pregnancy termination should be illegal. Speaking with The Times from Ottawa, Warawa that “I’m not aware of anything else that 92 per cent of Canadians agree on.” He said that all parties in Parliament condemn the practice. As well, he noted, the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada has “vehemently opposed sex-selection pregnancy termination.” His motion came in response to numerous inquiries and concerns his office received after the CBC presented an investigation on gender selection last June. Warawa credited the broadcaster for publicizing the practice.
With hidden cameras, the CBC visited 22 private ultrasound clinics in Canada. They found that most of these clinics allowed ultrasounds to show the sex of the baby so that the parents could choose to terminate the pregnancy if the unborn child was a female. A 30-year-old Langley man who legally changed his name to Nikki Sixx Serafino was sentenced to six years in jail for shooting and killing a Surrey man in 2009. Serafino will serve 27 months after being given credit for time already served. He was also given a firearms ban at his sentencing hearing in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster on Friday. Originally, Serafino had been charged with second degree murder, but on the first day of what was set to be his trial in May, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. Serafino, who was previously known as Jeffery Alan Smith, was arrested in April 2010, in connection with the murder of 33-year-old Damon Michael Martin. It was the morning of May 12, 2009, around 8:45 a.m., when Martin was shot in the stomach while inside a house in the Panorama Ridge area of Surrey. Martin stumbled out of the house, attempting to flee. He got as far as Highway 10 at 132 Street, when he collapsed on the roadside. A passerby called 911, believing Martin had been run over. Serafino, who police have learned is a huge fan of the heavy metal band Motley Crue, changed his name to match that of the band’s guitarist, Nikki Sixx. At the time, police said the shooting was not gang-related, nor was the shooting linked to drugs or organized crime. It’s believed there was some sort of dispute between the two. Both men had some prior criminal records, but police said Martin was attempting to turn his life around before he was killed.

Approximately 1,300 union workers, one-third of ICBC’s unionized workforce, staged a one-day strike on Wednesday to protest lagging contract talks. The walk-out at the Langley Driver Services centre coincided with a water pipe break, which was discovered on Wednesday morning. A restoration company was mopping up at the Logan Avenue/203 Street centre, as the employees walked the picket line. The centre will not reopen until (today) Tuesday, Oct. 9. The ICBC employees belong to the Canadian Office and Professional Employees union, Local 378, who have been without a contract for more than two years.

Airplane’s retirement a ‘tear-shedder’
Pilots Bill Findlay (left) and Ray Horton parked the Firecat air tanker aircraft for the very last time at the Canadian Museum of Flight on Friday. The retired air tanker, which originally served as a CS2F Tracker on the HMCS Bonaventure aircraft carrier, was donated to the museum by Conair Aviation.
from PAGE 1
It’s a big moment for Conair, too, Horton added. “It’s a real pleasure for us because this was an incredibly successful airplane in our fleet. It’s an icon from our fleet, it’s been in our service for over 30 years,” he said. “ To see them retire is a bit of a tear-shedder, but at the same time we know we are going to have it here on display for people for many, many years to come.” This was also Findlay’s and Horton’s first flight together, making that moment even more memorable for the two of them. “Living next to Bill for so long, we’ve never actually flown together,” Horton said. “This was our first flight. It’s a real pleasure to finally get in the sky and do a flight like this in this airplane. “We’ll be looking back on this for years from now.”

t least one of the election gag laws has been thrown out. The B.C. Court of Appeal has decided that an attempt by the provincial government to control free speech in the period before a provincial election isn’t constitutional. This after the government tried several times to restrict how much money third parties can spend in the 60-day window before an election campaign officially begins. An attempt by Victoria to cut that down to 40 days didn’t work either. Governments and political parties have interfered in the election process far too much. Elections are not the property of politicians — they are the property of citizens. They are the one chance that citizens have to determine who is in power, what policies will be brought in and what changes can be worked towards. Yet at the federal and provincial level, election spending has been restricted for years. Not only are individual candidates restricted in their spending, which does at least level the playing field a bit, but individuals, businesses, unions and interest groups have severe restrictions on how much they can spend to send messages to voters. This is what the province was trying to do in the pre-election period — mainly to cut off messages from antigovernment groups. The BC Liberals were aiming at the B.C. Government Employees Union and the B.C. Teachers Federation, who ran pungent anti-government messages before the 2009 election officially began. Individuals, organizations and businesses should have every right to spend money before and during campaigns. Much is being said at present about the 25th anniversary of free trade. The 1988 federal election was fought on that issue. During it, both pro- and anti-free trade organizations spent a lot of money to get their messages out. It was a hard-fought election, on one big issue, and the additional messages from all the third parties were an integral part of the debate. It’s good that the Court of Appeal has struck down restrictions during the pre-election period. It would be nice if a court would strike down the restrictions which apply during federal and provincial elections as well. The only purpose they serve is to keep the election process dominated by political parties, and to severely restrict the rights of citizens during what should be a free-ranging debate.

he short-on-specifics announcement by Premier Christy Clark about a 10-year plan to replace or upgrade the George Massey Tunnel took more than a few people by surprise. Lost in the ensuing bridge/tunnel discussion was any talk about a longterm solution for the congestion that plagues Highway 99. Yes, upgrading the tunnel to perhaps double in size would remove that choke point. Unfortunately, it would also just relocate it to another spot on the highway, unless the entire highway system is upgraded. The George Massey Tunnel was built in 1957, long before superhighways were a daily part of life for South Deltans. This was still mainly a farm community. Critics of Clark’s announcement say more thought needs to be put into rapid transit, to connect South Delta to the growing communities of Richmond and South Surrey. Blacktopping may win her votes, but Clark won’t be viewed as anything but self-serving unless she takes a closer look at the challenges of an aging roadway system and continued growth. Rather than vying for votes by making vague and questionable promises, Clark would be better served by acting as a true leader, and gathering Lower Mainland leaders for a closer and much more comprehensive examination of regional transportation issues. Yes, the tunnel is a significant problem that will cost millions of taxpayer dollars, but in an age where money is hard to come by, getting better bang for the buck is the key. At the end of the day, putting more buses on the roadway, and cheaper infrastructure upgrades may serve as a Band-aid for the short-term, while transportation planners work on a longer-term approach that takes into account growth patterns. Unfortunately, that approach won’t top the evening news, meaning the chances of it happening are somewhere between slim and none. —South Delta Leader The Langley Times is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. ‘Highway of Heroes’ is confusing Editor: Every highway has a number and a name. Highway 1 is called the Trans-Canada Highway because its original construction used federal funding. A few decades ago we used to call it “the 401” because it was the only one that had four lanes. Fortunately, that is no longer so. To call Highway 1 through Langley by another name (namely “Highway of Heroes”) is confusing and in fact unnecessary. Nobody will use that name colloquially, and many Canadians would in fact like to forget our country’s initial secret involvement in Afghanistan (which was not peacekeeping), and remains very controversial to say the least. The new minister of transportation might as well save $10,000 to replace the sign that was destroyed by two highway heroes (?) two weeks ago.
It is south of Zero Avenue that they do this kind of thing all too often, where a military mindset thrives and the country is continually at war with anybody who tries to use other types of currency for selling gold and oil. They even name highway sections and rest areas and the like after highway patrolmen and maintenance foremen, as for example “Superintendent I. M. Dumb Rest Area.” Moreover, Canada does not really have a heritage that glorifies war. I am not saying that the 13 British Columbians who lost their lives in Afghanistan should not be remembered. Far from that. Let’s call a street in Aldergrove (where he lived) after Master Corporal Colin Bason — e.g. “Colin Bason Crescent,” and not the full name plus title. That would be more meaningful
Take VoTe again Editor: Re: Councillor Steve Ferguson’s remarks about the pot vote (The Times, Oct. 2). He made a very good point on the method of voting — show of hands verses electronic voting. He is absolutely correct on this. There are so many that will go with the flow and not stand firm on what they believe, if they have to do it in public. I am willing to bet that the person or persons who dreamed up the idea to have a show of hands is also in favour of decriminalization of pot. They knew intimidation would help them gain votes. The vote should be taken again, and the first vote be considered null and void. L. Towns, Langley
in the long run, and other B.C. municipalities could do the same. And yes, 50 years from now, somebody may well ask: Why does it have this name? Somebody who becomes cannon fodder in a far off country should not automatically be called a hero. They just did the job for which they enlisted, knowing full well that they might not return home safe and sound. In the town where I was born, a youngster who voluntarily joined the underground resistance forces against the German occupying forces, was treacherously killed. After the liberation in 1945 “Bridge Street” was renamed “Pieter Doelman Street,” and it remains that today. His acts were heroic. Jacob de Raadt, Langley City
Prime minister is gunning for B.C.’s upstart residents Editor: Am I the only one who sees what is going on here, with Prime Minister Stephen Harper unceremoniously closing down a vital marine centre on the coast? I have no doubt that Gordon Campbell and Harper struck up a lucrative deal, which included Campbell implementing the HST (despite the fact that his campaign promises included no HST) in return for a nice cushy posting. Campbell knew he would be facing the wrath of the B.C. voters once he did his about face on this issue. Let’s see — the conversation probably went something like this: Campbell: “I will implement the HST but this will probably cost me my job The
as premier so I will need something in return.” Harper: “Well, how about I appoint you the new U.K. High Commissioner and you get to live in England?” Campbell: “Works for me, I’ll be in touch.” Well, as we know B.C. voters decided that the HST had to go as did Campbell, and we voted to get rid of it and him. Seems strange that a tax that took only a couple of weeks to implement is taking two years to get rid of, but nevertheless it will be gone soon and Campbell has his cushy job. Now Harper is a little annoyed with us B.C.ers so he decides to unleash his vin-
dictiveness on us for voting out his HST by closing the Kitsilano Coast Guard station, putting lives on the line, and closing the Vancouver, Comox and Tofino marine communications centres, thus putting more lives at risk. I am quite sure he is not done yet — stay tuned. I would have thought that we would have earned some Brownie points by signing a new 20-year agreement to keep the RCMP here in B.C., which as we see and hear in the news just about every day, is turning out to be a huge mistake. It’s another example of coersion by the Feds. B.C.ers should have had a vote
on this too, instead of having this inept police force rammed down our throats for another 20 years. No doubt this letter will elicit some very unkind remarks but the facts cannot be disputed. I guess the only way we can show Harper that we can’t be pushed around is to do our very best to get rid of him the next time we go to the polls. That may be a tall order, as the Easterners usually decide who we get stuck with and Harper doesn’t seem to ever punish them in any way. Why wouldn’t they vote for him? A.Crawford Langley

Have Two Ways Out: That is the theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Week running Oct. 7 to 13. “This year’s campaign is all about keeping you, your family, and your community safer from fire,” said Capt. Dave Sanders, Langley City Fire Rescue Service’s fire prevention officer. The department is hosting a number of activities for the public to enjoy while learning about fire safety: • Thursday, Oct. 11: The fire hall will be open to the public for an open house, at 5785 – 203 St. from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. The public is invited to bring their families along to enjoy pizza and donuts, meet our firefighters and learn about fire safety and burn prevention. There will be live fire and Jaws of Life demonstrations as well as hall tours and fire safety displays. Council members will take part in live fire demonstrations and to be hoisted aloft in the 100’ aerial tower platform. There will be plenty of fire safety related prize draws throughout the evening. • Friday, Oct. 12: Firefighters we will be conducting the pizza delivery ridealong program, in which Langley City Fire Rescue Service is partnering with

And once you are outside, stay outside.” Township firefighters will also be reminding residents that smoke alarms have the power to save lives — if they operate properly. “If you haven’t tested your smoke alarm lately, it may not be working,” Barton warned. “That’s a risk you can’t afford to take.” Working smoke alarms provide early warning of fires, giving people inside buildings extra time to escape safely. Each alarm must be tested every month to ensure the batteries are functioning. Also during Fire Prevention Week, residents and business people who know how to keep themselves and others safe will be recognized for their efforts and dedication by being named Safety Stars. Members of the community who have gone above and beyond the call of duty will be recognized as the stars they are during a week designed to help keep everyone safe. Fire Prevention Week will be celebrated from Oct. 7 to 13 by the Township Fire Department, which is encouraging the public to take precautions that could potentially save lives and recognizing those who have taken that message to heart. “This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign is called ‘Have 2 Ways Out.’ It focuses on the importance of having a fire escape plan and practicing it with your family,” said public fire and life safety educator Krista Barton. “Everyone should know two ways out of each room and know where to meet outside in case of an emergency,” Barton said. “Most importantly, everyone needs to understand that getting out is the first priority.

Langley chief is new CAFC prez Township’s Steve Gamble ‘humbled’ to represent all of Canada’s fire chiefs Natasha JoNes Times Reporter
The Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs has picked a new president: Langley Township fire chief Steve Gamble. It is the first time in 20 years that the CAFC has chosen a president from B.C.In fact, he is only the fourth British Columbian president in the organization’s 100-year-old history. He is not afraid to juggle two big responsibilities. “I have never been shy to take on added
responsibilities,” he said. “However, I would never have consider the president’s position without having the support of staff within the fire department, the Township, council, and of course my family,” Gamble said. “I’m quite humbled that my peers have elected me to represent them,” said Gamble. As president, it is his duty to speak on behalf of the members of the CAFC and the issues facing the Canadian fire service.
“There are a number of issues we are pursuing all of which are directed at achieving our goal of keeping the public and our firefighters safe,” he said. For example, working with emergency partners (police and ambulance) the CAFC is developing a national strategy to improve voice communication and “inter-operability challenges” across all three disciplines, he said. The CAFC is working on a number

of initiatives to protect firefighters and citizens through Building and Fire Code amendments and product design. A big challenge for the CAFC is strengthening its role as a trusted advisor to the federal government and all that comes with this distinction, Gamble said. “More than ever we are called upon to provide input and insight to assist government and agencies within government, develop polices and best practices to keep people safe,” he said. Thanks to technology, Gamble won’t have to travel often for his CAFC
duties. Mayor Jack Froese said that Gamble’s appointment reflects his leadership ability, dedication and commitment to the fire service. Gamble became Township’s fire chief in January, 2011, bringing with him more than three decades of firefighting and administrative experience. Having served for 33 years in Port Coquitlam, he was the first Township fire chief to be hired from another area. He is also past president of the Fire Chiefs Association of B.C. and served as first vice-president of the CAFC before being elected president.

Griffith Area Neighbourhood plan
Council votes to move forward on Brookswood development Natasha JoNes Times Reporter
Too many uncertainties, and the fear that the next area of the Township to be developed will become another Willoughby, failed to dissuade a majority of council to delay advancing the Brookswood/ Fernridge Neighbourhood Plan. An 8-1 vote on Sept. 17 means that the public consultation process can begin, starting with three workshops which will be followed by an open house. The new plan is named the Griffith Neighbourhood Plan. It is named after Robert Griffith who, in 1901, owned 160 acres north of 36 Avenue and west of 200 Street; a
stretch of 200 Street was once named for him. Councillor Charlie Fox urged caution. “I have great reservations about this,” he said, adding that he would like more details that show the major road network and other infrastructure data. “We have some transportation issues in Brookswood,” Fox said, pointing to inadequate routes to Surrey and too few north-south routes. Councillor Kim Richter agreed. “We don’t want to see some of the same problems we fell into in Willoughby,” she said, citing in particular planning for schools. Council approved the Griffith Neighbourhood Plan name, and endorsed the consultation process. It begins with a series of workshops, the first two of which are already fully booked. here are child prodigies, and then there is Kevin Chen of Calgary. At age five Kevin began music studies; at six he was the youngest person in Canada to pass the Grade 9 Royal Conservatory of Music exams, and this summer, at age seven, he passed his Grade 10 — both with first-class honours. This past spring he performed an 80-minute debut recital featuring works by Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and Debussy and achieved national recognition after his performance at the Calgary Kiwanis Music Festival. He can easily learn three Grade 10 pieces a week and has transposed Bach while sightreading. And that’s just the beginning. This fall, Kevin, the youngest member of the Mount Royal Conservatory of Music Academy, will be making his first concert appearance with an orchestra as guest soloist with the Abbotsford Youth Orchestra as they present The Prodigy on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. at the Langley Community Music School. It all began last year, when AYO director Calvin Dyck met Kevin’s teacher, Colleen Athparia, while adjudicating a music competition in Winnipeg.
“Colleen told me she was having a challenge staying ahead of her youngest student.” “After playing his first recital this spring he said to her: ‘That was fun, let’s do it again.’ “We respect his tender age, yet because he likes to play we are encouraging him by giving him this opportunity. “Kevin will be performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 17 and because he is not very big, under 40 pounds in weight, we have to be sure the piano has a ‘light’ touch.” While Kevin is exceedingly shy, he is also playful, loves to stand on one foot, and be ‘big brother’ to his three younger siblings. He is creative; he is an artistic genius. “Once every century somebody comes along who is so gifted they are like a Mozart,” said Dyck. “They assimilate music so quickly like it’s already a part of them, as natural as breathing. Whereas most normal people take weeks and months to learn a piece and understand the intricacies, for Kevin it is obvious.” Remember Amadeus (the movie) and Mozart writing music directly to paper with no changes, no alterations? Young Kevin does something similar. He hears the music in his head but instead of writing on paper he composes directly to his computer. “We will be doing one of his pieces, but because he can’t play it himself (the chords are too big for his little hands) Colleen is coming and will play it for him.” To fill out the program the AYO will perform Mozart’s Symphony No. 17, and Handel’s Passacaglia. The performance will also feature the Langley Community Music School Cello Ensemble performing Death of an Angel. continued, PAGE 20

Seven-year-old pianist Kevin Chen of Calgary has displayed many of the same amazing abilities as a young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart did 250 years ago. Kevin will perform at LCMS on Sunday, Oct. 14, accompanied by the Abbotsford Youth Orchestra.

Table is set for Fort Gallery’s annual Blue Plate Special Tickets available for $38 and $200 for this Friday’s event It’s art a la carte. The Fort Langley Community Hall is about to welcome the Fort Gallery’s biggest event of the year, the 2012 Blue Plate Special. Open to the public, and happening at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, the Blue Plate Special is an annual fundraiser held to support Langley’s most innovative art gallery, the Fort Gallery. Returning once again as master of ceremonies for the evening, will be local comedian and improv performer Elaine Brewer-White. The band Lavalights will play live, bringing their blend of swing, soul, R & B, and blues standards and originals,
for dancing, listening, or just grooving. Food and silent auction items will be provided by a number of local businesses from Langley and Fort Langley. Thirty-eight tickets, at a price of $200 each, have been made available to purchase. Those 38 ticket numbers will be randomly drawn, with the holder of the first ticket drawn being the first person to choose an original contemporary work produced by one of the gallery’s artists, worth more than the price of admission. The person holding the next ticket drawn will then choose from the remaining works, and so on.
The evening will also include an appetizer buffet, live music, and access to a silent auction of more great art. For those not wishing to take part in the $200 ticket draw, $30 tickets are also available. These tickets will allow access to everything else, including the silent auction, the appetizer buffet, and music. Tickets can be purchased from the Fort Gallery, in person or by phone at 604-8887411, Wednesdays to Sundays, from noon to 5 pm. Wonderful original art is yours for the taking in a great venue with great food, company and music. For more information, visit the gallery’s website at www.fortgallery.ca.

Crafters need not be shy; the Fraser Valley Bead Show doesn’t just cater to beaders. “This is a great event for crafters of all types,” said Barrie Edwards, the show’s producer. “I am so excited about one of our brand new vendors, Serenity Pearls,” said Barrie, referring to a pearl vendor from Vancouver Island. “One can never have too many pearls.” Fan favourites, include Stones and

It’s a lot of fun.” This is Langley’s chance to not only hear a fantastic program of enjoyable, relaxing and yet exciting music but to also see a real prodigy perform, a youngster who is inescapably an inspiration for all existing and future musicians. Kyle Belton selected in third round of National Lacrosse League draft Gary ahuja Times Sports
While Kyle Belton looks for a day job, he is hoping to spend his nights with the Toronto Rock. Belton, 25, is back in Langley after graduating from New York’s Stony Brook University with a degree in business management. He also played on the Seawolves field lacrosse team, where he accumulated 59 goals and 73 points in 53 career games over his four years. And last week (Oct. 1), Belton was selected in the third round (27th overall) of the National Lacrosse League draft by the Toronto Rock. “I have been waiting for this

Langley Thunder’s Kyle Belton (left) is hoping to land a spot with the National Lacrosse League’s Toronto Rock. day — the chance to play in the NLL — to come and I am excited to train these next few months and show them what I have got,” he said. Training camp is in December with the regular season beginning Jan. 12.
Belton said he had talked to a couple of different teams so he didn’t know exactly who would pick him. He did figure he would go either in the second or the third round of the seven-round draft. With only nine teams in
the league, and Belton one of seven Rock draft picks, Belton knows he has his work cut out in his quest to land a roster spot. “Just cracking the line-up is a challenge on its own, but I am excited for the battle.” “We feel he could be one of those guys who has potential to play in our league,” said Rock general manager Terry Sanderson. “We first scouted him three years ago and we have been tracking him ever since.” Sanderson said Belton could add depth to the Rock along the right-side, adding the goal scorer has a great shot and good footwork. What should make things easier, Belton believes, is the fact the Toronto roster has some familiar faces in former teammates and foes he has played against in the senior A Western Lacrosse Association. One of those is Rock star Garrett Billings, who like Belton is an alum of the Langley
Minor Lacrosse Association. Both Billings and Belton also play their senior A lacrosse with the Western Lacrosse Association champion Langley Thunder. Belton saw limited action in 2012 with the Thunder, playing in just six games and scoring four goals and four assists. For his four-year career in Langley, Belton has 55 goals and 122 points in 52 games. “It is definitely going to make it easier seeing faces you know,” Belton said. ••••• The Langley Thunder had two other players also selected at the draft. Mark Matthews, who is Thunder property, went first overall to the Edmonton Rush, while Shayne Jackson was drafted fourth overall by the Minnesota Swarm. Jackson was fourth on the team with 18 goals and 38 points in 14 games in his rookie season for Langley.

three-way tie for third place at a Pacwest tournament in Nanaimo. With one tournament to go, Whitehouse sits one stroke off the individual Pacwest title. “Darren has been consistent for us all year, he has been amazing to watch,” said Fraser Valley coach Chris Bertram.

Valley Women’s Network
Birds of a different feather Nick GreeNizaN Black Press
Not so long ago, nearly half the players on the Surrey Eagles’ roster were birds of a slightly different feather – those of a hawk. A Valley West Hawk, to be more precise. And while it’s common for Eagles’ rosters to feature a few locals each year, this season has more than ever – including eight former Valley West Hawks, the B.C. Major Midget League team that includes players from Surrey, Langley, Cloverdale and White Rock. Eagles’ veterans Colton Mackie and Michael Stenerson, who both suited up for the Hawks four seasons ago, are the oldest players with ties to the MML squad, while other alums include goaltender Glenn Ferguson, Mason Blacklock, Jordan Klimek, Austen Bietenbeck, Kevan Kilistoff and Stefan Burzan. A ninth Eagle, rookie forward Joel Gaudet, is also a local product, having come up from the Semiah-

Jordan Klimek (far right), who captained the Valley West Hawks last season, is one of three Langley players from the Hawks who now play for the Surrey Eagles. moo Ravens’ midget A team. And while the goal of any BC Hockey League team is to ice the best team — regardless of where the players come from — Eagles’ head coach/GM Matt Erhart said, when possible, they prefer to go with local talent. “I think going with locals guys makes sense in a lot of ways, and if we’re able to do it, we always try to,” he said. “The (major midget) teams here, and teams like the Hawks…
they’ve developed some real quality players.” Other Eagles, including defenceman Devon Toews and Kolten Grieve, have played with other BC MML teams, and Erhart guesses “at least three-quarters of (BCHL) players have played in that league at some point, if they’re from B.C.” “There’s a connection there. With our schedule, we’re always really busy, but with the midgets playing on weekends, it’s a natural for me to go out during
the day before our own games, to watch them play in the afternoon,” the coach explained. “That way I get to know them, and get to watch them six or seven times a season, instead of just once or twice.” The Valley West squad has had a number of coaches in recent years — Tom Spencer has been at the helm the last two — but regardless of who is behind the bench, players agree the team, and the league, is a perfect
stepping stone between minor hockey and the junior ranks. “Major midget, it does prepare you very well. It gives you the experience of travelling with your team on a bus, going on road trips, staying in hotels — it gives you an idea of what (junior hockey) is all about,” said Mackie. Erhart, a former major midget coach himself with the Greater Vancouver Canadians, said his relationships with MML coaches like Spencer help when bringing midget players into the fold, either as full-timers or affiliate players. Though he’d seen them play in person plenty, two current Eagle rookies, Klimek and Bietenbeck, came highly recommended from Spencer. “Tom and I have a good relationship. He lets me know when he’s got a guy I should be taking a look at. They keep me updated, give me access to their players if I need to talk to them. It helps having coaches on the same page as you,” Erhart said.

Kodiaks take down Outlaws Aldergrove junior B hockey team beats Mission after losing to Abbotsford The Aldergrove Kodiaks bounced back from defeat with a 5-2 victory. The Kodiaks had lost 5-1 at home to the Abbotsford Pilots on Oct. 3, but turned the tables on the host Mission City Outlaws the next night at the Mission Leisure Centre. The split leaves the junior B hockey club with a 4-4-0-0 record in the Pacific Junior
Ice Hockey League. Against the Outlaws, Aldergrove enjoyed a two-toone shots on goal advantage, firing 49 pucks at the Mission goal. But despite the huge discrepancy in shots on goal, the score was tied at one after 20 minutes and the Kodiaks had a slim 3-2 lead after two. MacLean Hewitt and Cole Gastel gave the visitors some breathing room with goals five minutes apart in the third. Scott McHaffie had opened the scoring for the Kodiaks while Stephen Ryan tallied twice in the second. Cole MacInness made 22 saves for the win.
