Snuneymuxw First Nation says that within six months it will develop a comprehensive plan to create an interpretive and cultural centre on Newcastle Island. Chief Douglas White III, who has been a longtime supporter of a First Nation cultural centre on the mostly undeveloped island, added that Snuneymuxw is also poised to examine a “full range of alternatives” for facilitating increased access to Newcastle. “Newcastle Island is one of our traditional village sites, and a place of great spiritual and cultural significance for the Snuneymuxw people,” said White, in a media release. “By embarking on this planning, Snuneymuxw is preparing for the next phase of the future of the Island, one which will see expanded opportunities for all people to learn about Snuneymuxw culture and way of life, and to enjoy the beauty of the island.” Newcastle Island became a provincial marine park in 1961 and is currently managed by Snuneymuxw in partnership with the City of Nanaimo. In early Nanaimo history, the 336-hectare park was home to a

saltery, sandstone quarry, coal mine and shipyard. Bill Merilees, spokesman for the Newcastle Island Society, a volunteer group that oversees the park’s operations, said while the society was aware that a cultural centre was on the radar, the announcement was not anticipated. “This came as a complete surprise to everybody,” said Merilees, noting that it has been well over a year since there were any formal discussions regarding the park’s operations. “We have tried to work with them but we just get stalled and put off and put off and then all of a sudden this thing pops out of the woodwork. Our position is we’re happy that they’re interested in doing something there but for pete’s sake, why don’t they just talk to us so we can all work together?” Merilees said that a management plan introduced in 1995 did identify a cultural centre, but that it was understood that the centre would be part of the existing pavilion. White said that as part of the planning process Snuneymuxw will connect with interested local stakeholders, as well as the provincial government, to seek views and input. ◆ See ‘CULTURAL’ /4

Childhood obesity focus of new clinic
Fitness instructor, dietician and coaches work with child’s family to foster lifestyle changes BY JENN McGARRIGLE THE NEWS BULLETIN
Nanaimo Regional General Hospital staff are enlisting the help of a fitness instructor and volunteer coaches to help tackle childhood obesity. Pacific Blue Cross’s Community Connection Health Foundation has donated $11,000 to support the new program proposed by staff in the hospital’s Paediatric Ambulatory Health Clinic. The money will hire a fitness instructor, who will supervise a team of volunteer “activity coaches” from Vancouver Island University’s sport, health and physical education program to work with families on individually tailored exercise plans. Hospital staff estimate the project, a partnership between the hospital, VIU and the city, charged with providing the fitness instructor, will help about 40 families over the course of a year. Glynis Marks, a psychologist with the clinic, said the goal is to see if the extra service results in helping children and their families make long-term lifestyle changes that lead to better weight management. Marks and a dietitian work with families of children who have been referred for obesity for an average of 6-8 weeks – her role as psychologist is to help with emotional issues that would get in the way of a family’s ability to make lifestyle changes – but she envisions the activity coaches working with the family for as long as six months, giving them support for a longer period of time. After the family has seen the dietitian and psychologist, Marks said the fitness instructor will consult with medical staff about
the specific needs of the family and any medical restrictions and then a volunteer coach will be assigned to work with them. “The research on treatment of pediatric obesity makes clear that we have to work with the whole family,” said Marks. “We can’t just look at nutrition.” Activities will be appropriate for the age, physical condition and interests of the child, focusing on fun things that can be done with their families. “A lot of them are actually anxious about doing exercise – they get out of breath or their knees hurt,” said Marks. “They need a gradual introduction to the idea that moving my body is fun.” Any gains the child experiences with the psychologist and the dietitian could be lost without connections to community resources for keeping active, she added. Suzanne Samborski, the city’s senior manager of recreation and culture, said there are plenty of opportunities to get active in the city’s parks, trails and facilities, but if someone hasn’t accessed these resources before, someone pointing you in the right direction could be helpful. “Sometimes you need a place to start,” she said. Brad Reimer, a professor in VIU’s department of sport, health and physical education, said the partnership gives his students a chance to apply the lessons learned in class to the real world. “One of our goals is to provide opportunities for our students to get practical experience in this field of study,” he said, adding that the experience also looks good on grad school applications.

Shelter remains under quarantine Nanaimo and District SPCA is making some progress on an outbreak of ringworm, but still continues to struggle. In their fifth week of quarantine due to the outbreak, SPCA staff have been busy with the care, treatment and testing of the more than 70 animals in the shelter. Testing is done by taking weekly brush samples of each animal. Samples are sent to Vancouver where they are cultured. Culturing can take up to two weeks to show a positive result. “The good news is that we now have four weeks worth of testing under our belt and can confirm that 32 previously affected animals are now negative for ringworm and will be available for adoption soon,” said Leon Davis, branch manager, in a press release. “Eleven cats and six dogs are still showing positive results based on samples taken two weeks ago. However, we are
awaiting more current results, and are hopeful that this will improve even more.” Davis doesn’t have a definitive date when the shelter will reopen, but hopes cats which have recovered will be available for adoption within two weeks. Dogs will hopefully follow soon after that. “When we do reopen we will be looking for forever homes for many cats, but will be limited as to how many new animals we can accept, as we have a waiting list of some 30 animals from owners who are hoping to surrender to us,” he said. While the outbreak has been a difficult time for the animals, Davis said it has been equally hard on shelter staff. “They’ve put in long hours each day, observing strict biosecurity protocols, while still giving each and every animal the individual treatment and care that is required to deal with ringworm infections in a shelter environment,” he said.

“No ringworm has been transmitted to any staff member or volunteer.” The outbreak has also strained the shelter’s resources. “Usually we take in around $9,000 in adoption fees each month which helps pay for medical care,” said Davis. “Being closed for adoptions has erased that income we rely on so much. The oral medication for the dogs has cost $500 and the oral medications for the cats $750. “The cleaning supplies, personal protection equipment, lime dips and anti-fungal solutions have cost more than $3,000. Medical fees for September have already exceeded $5,000.” A Nanaimo woman is prepared to match up to $1,000 in donations from the public in memory of her mother, Anne Atkinson, who was an animal lover. ◆ From /1 Nanaimo Mayor John Ruttan said he supports the idea of a cultural centre on Newcastle in principle, but there has been no recent consultation between SFN and the city. “It’s been a work in progress for some time and we’re certainly supportive of it,” said Ruttan. “I guess Chief White is trying to gauge the interest that is out there for the project. As far as the city goes we don’t really have a role in approvals as it is a provincial park.” During the November 2011 municipal election, local developer Jim Routledge ran on the platform of building a bridge from Nanaimo to Newcastle Island, a platform supported by White. Routledge said he fully supports the cultural centre and further development in the park. “Quite frankly I think the development of the island is by far the most logical and appropriate (issue) to be looking at,” he said. “Access will come later in terms of demand, how to service it and
how to handle it. But the question of how to develop Newcastle in a responsible, fair way is wonderful. I think Chief White has hit the nail on the head with this sort of approach.” White said that Newcastle has been an important part of the Snuneymuxw way of life over centuries and that the band will continue to be stewards for the island. “As we have seen in recent months, people have been discussing Newcastle in ways that reflect various perspectives and interests,” said White. “Our people have been stewards of the island for countless generations and through this planning, will be developing a roadmap for continuing the responsibilities for the island that have been passed onto us from our ancestors, and which we hold for future generations.” reporter2@nanaimobulletin.com

The Bra Ladyy Is Coming to Size You Up
Are you tired of feeling saggy, lumpy, pinched or strained? Well you’re not alone. As you’ve probably seen on Oprah or read in women’s magazines, over 80 per cent of all women wear the wrong size bra. Here’s where Barb Chapman, the Bra Lady, comes in. Chapman is coming to NANAIMO ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19TH to outfit you with the best possible bra for your body. Chapman said she will be seeing clients on a one-onone basis, explaining the benefits of good bras and measuring their bodies properly. “Most women just want to find a good-fitting bra that’s not uncomfortable,” Chapman said. “What they don’t realize is that a good support bra is also important for blood circulation and enhanced lymph drainage.” Chapman has over 200 bra sizes available for ordering, ranging from 30AA to 52KK. It’s likely that you’ll fit somewhere between those sizes. She offers these questions for women to ask themselves: • Do you have a drawer full of bras but none that fit comfortably? • Does your bust line “bounce” when you walk while wearing your “everyday” bra? • Do you overflow the cup of your bra? • Do your bra straps slip off your shoulders or dig into your shoulders leaving red and painful marks? • Does your bra ride up in the back because you tighten the straps to give you added support? • Have you ever begun an exercise class only to drop out because your breasts ached from lack of support while jumping or running? If you answer yes to any of these you are in need of a new bra, and a custom one could be the way to go.

TTerminal Trench study backed by city council Downtown group waiting on provincial grant to assess land BY TOBY GORMAN THE NEWS BULLETIN
The City of Nanaimo has agreed to forward more than $217,000 to the Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association to assist it with completing an environmental study in the Terminal Trench. In May, council endorsed the DNBIA’s application through the provincial brownfield revitalization program to conduct an environmental assessment of the properties located along Terminal Avenue between Comox Road and Nicol Street. Though the DNBIA was successful in securing its total requested amount from the program in July, the province notified the DNBIA that the release of the money would not happen until the project is complete. The DNBIA is waiting for the final signature from the province but said it has received preliminary approval and once the final approval is received it will begin with the project. “Basically what the province has said is complete the work and we’ll release the funds,” said Ian Howat, the city’s director of strategic relationships. “But due to the size of the DNBIA’s operation they do not have the cash reserves available to carry the project for the length of time it will take to receive the grant funds.” Council will advance an additional $8,000 to round off annual funding commitments for 2013 to the DNBIA.
“
We believe this is an important priority and an important thing to do.
“This means we’ve committed to funding DNBIA through 2013 which we believe council would intend to do anyway,” said Al Kenning, city manager. With a required deadline of March 2013 to complete the work, Kenning said there is some urgency in forwarding the funds to allow the work to begin. Coun. Jim Kipp said he felt “it was a bit much” to have the request put upon council at the last minute. “I haven’t seen this before tonight (Monday),” said Kipp. “I’ve had some concerns with the DNBIA in the last little while through some of my correspondence. This coming at me with this urgency is a bit much.” Kenning added that the Terminal Trench corridor is one of council’s priorities for brownfield site revitalization and that the grant is a good opportunity to have the first phase of work completed and paid for. “From staff ’s perspective we
believe this is an important priority and an important thing to do and because the DNBIA is on such a tight cash flow they couldn’t do it without assistance,” he said. Howat said the the environmental assessment on the properties along the corridor will allow the city to request relaxations on the clean up levels of the sites which will make it easier for the properties to be redeveloped in the future. The DNBIA is expecting to have the assessment phase of the project completed by January. The Terminal Trench was once a ravine running from the Pearson Bridge to Port Place Shopping Centre. It became a dumping ground in 1891 for not only debris from coal mines, but for garbage from the community, and was eventually filled in by the early 1920s. The likelihood of contaminated soil beneath the nearly 100 properties lining the street has been an impediment to redevelopment for several years. Darren Moss, DNBIA planning, development and design committee chair man and project manager, told the Bulletin in July that discovering what is underneath the roads and buildings and how to deal with the contaminants that are likely there would be a daunting task for individual property owners which is why the DNBIA has agreed to take the project on. reporter2@nanaimobulletin.com

Clubhouse still in court limbo BY JENN McGARRIGLE THE NEWS BULLETIN
Almost five years after the province seized the Nanaimo Hells Angels’ clubhouse, no date for a civil trial has been set to determine the fate of the property. In November 2007, the clubhouse and an adjacent vacant property were seized by the province under the province’s Civil Forfeiture Act. The law, created in 2006, gives the province the power to seize goods when it is demonstrated in civil courts those items were used in or acquired as a result of unlawful activity. Since the 2007 seizure, the biker group appealed the original interim preservation order allowing the province to seize the clubhouse property, but that appeal was denied in B.C. Supreme Court in March 2009, when Justice Barry Davies also granted the province an enduring interim preservation order until the trial of the forfeiture action. The Hells Angels then appealed the enduring interim preservation order, but that appeal was denied in 2010.
Last year, a B.C. Supreme Court judge determined that police evidence collected during a two-year investigation of the club can be used in the civil trial over the group’s clubhouse. Rob Kroeker, executive director of the province’s Civil Forfeiture Office, said initial hopes were for a trial in the fall of 2011, which was moved up to last spring, but the parties are dealing with a number of different pre-trial applications. “It is a large piece of complex litigation and what’s occurred so far is pretty normal,” he said. “We’re moving close to trial with the assistance of the court as they help us narrow the issues. There’s a significant amount of material.” Scheduling the trial for next spring has been talked about, but a date has yet to be set, Kroeker added. Meanwhile, the Civil Forfeiture Office is responsible for upkeep of the property on Victoria Road while awaiting trial. Kroeker said the office is responsible for cutting the grass, weeding, picking up garbage and other tasks to maintain the property. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Motorcyclist injured in crash A 21-year-old man suffered multiple fractures and internal injuries after colliding with a car around noon on Wednesday. Nanaimo RCMP say they believe the speed of the 2005 1000cc Honda was a factor when the motorcyclist turned off the Island Highway onto 104th Street and collided with a car turning into Country Club Centre. Police report the rider was thrown 45 metres from the scene of the impact. He remains in critical condition at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. The 25-year-old driver of the car was not injured.

MANAGEMENT DUTIES left up to senior district staff. BY JENN M C GARRIGLE THE NEWS BULLETIN
Changes to the way Nanaimo school trustees govern the district are spelled out in a new set of policies and procedures available for public comment. The board has been working with a consultant for months on moving from a management board structure to a strategic policy governance model. Jamie Brennan, school board chairman, said the board will now focus on setting broad objectives and goals rather than day-to-day operations. “For trustees, it clarifies our role as one of not playing with trains, but managing the railroad,” he said. “We’ve spent nearly a year meeting for the purpose of redefining our role. I think trustees are quite happy with how this has developed.” Previously, the board was getting involved in numerous management activities such as hiring vice-principals, principals, assistant superintendents and other managers, said Brennan. “We felt that that was kind of intrusive,” he said. “We’re
letting our managers manage now. It will free trustees to take that broad look at how the district is doing. I think [managers will] feel freed up to do their jobs.” The new policy requires the board to annually monitor the effectiveness of both itself and the superintendent in implementing the goals outlined in the strategic plan currently under development. Brennan said the board will review the superintendent and obtain help from the B.C. School Trustees Association to self-monitor its own progress. He said the catalyst for change was a review trustees commissioned of the effectiveness of the district’s governance structure. The consultant’s report, made public in the fall of 2011, found that trustees and staff were spending too much time attending committee meetings, discussions were sometimes repeated at different meetings, some trustees were suspicious of other trustees’ motives and senior staff sometimes felt that their advice was not believed or valued. After the report was released last year, trustees eliminated most of the district’s committees on a trial basis and created two standing committees that included all board members instead of a handful.
JAMIE BRENNAN
Brennan said the new policy formalizes this decision on an ongoing basis. The public is invited to comment on the new governance policies and procedures, which can be found at www.sd68.bc.ca/Board/board policies.asp. Comments on proposed policies must be sent to the Board’s Secretary, 395 Wakesiah Avenue, V9R 3K6 or by fax at 250-741-5309. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Court rejects spending limits
Plan helps guide decision making

ISLANDS TRUST works together.
BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN
The Islands Trust has nailed down priorities that will help guide future budget decisions. The organization adopted a strategic plan in September to provide a focus the 2013-14 budget and attempt to collect the common priorities shared by the local trust areas. The objectives were created after the Trust gathered public feedback during July and August. The Islands Trust council originally identified 10 objectives, but narrowed it to six. The six objectives include protecting the natural environment of islands within the trust area, protecting coastal and marine ecosystems, protecting quality and quantity of water resources, enhancing community economic sustainability and security, strengthening relations with First Nations and improving organizational costs and operational effectiveness. The objectives are based on the three primary goals of the Islands Trust’s policy statement, which includes ecosystem preservation and protection, stewardship of island resources and sustaining island character and healthy communities.
Sheila Malcolmson, chairwoman of the Islands Trust Council and a trustee on the Gabriola Islands Trust, said that identifying common priorities allows the trust councils to work collaboratively on issues. Malcolmson said many Trust councils have been working on protecting quality and quantity of water resources a priority. This has been an issue Gabriola has been trying to tackle. Malcolmson said the local Gabriola Trust council has been pushing for changes to the provincial water act. “It’s been a longstanding issue for Gabriolans,” she said. “If we did it all on our own it would be a big job, but this means we will all be pulling together.” The objectives will also be helpful for community groups that are working on projects that align with the plan. Malcolmson said organizations that are working on projects that align with the plan may have a better chance to get funding. Other issues that are affecting many islands such as fair ferry rates is also an issue the members of the Trust can work together on, she added. The Islands Trust is comprised of 13 major and more than 450 smaller islands and covers 5,200 square kilometres. Conference centre hosts Lions clubs The Vancouver Island Conference Centre is starting its fall season by hosting more than 400 delegates from the Lion’s International Multiple District 19. The organization is celebrating 95 years of history by bringing delegates from across B.C., North Idaho and Washington for a four-day convention Oct. 10-13 that will be filled with seminars relating to founda-
tion, leadership and growth. The delegates will also explore many off-site attractions and activities in the region. The VICC boasts 38,000 square feet of convention space capable of accommodating 1,300 guests, advanced audio-visual technology, and nine multi-purpose rooms. It also features a 2,000 square foot kitchen and catering menus.
The B.C. Court of Appeal has rejected a second attempt by the B.C. Liberal government to restrict third-party election advertising before the next provincial election. In a ruling released Thursday, the three-judge panel unanimously concluded that extending restrictions for 40 days before the formal 28-day election campaign is still an undue infringement on freedom of expression. An earlier restriction, extending 60 days before the 2009 election campaign, was struck down after a group of public sector unions challenged it in court. Attorney General Shirley Bond said Thursday the government will not appeal the latest ruling or attempt new restrictions in advance of the May 14, 2013 vote. Bond said the latest legislation met some of the court’s tests of fairness, but the government was not able to show that third-party advertising had unduly influenced voters in B.C. She said the U.S. election system shows what can happen when unlimited spending by wealthy interest groups dominates elections. “I think the court has provided us with a very thorough analysis and clear reasons, and have concluded that any restrictions to the advertising in the pre-election period is unconstitutional,” Bond said. “We sent this case to the B.C. Court of Appeal for advice, and we are going to accept that advice.” Former attorney general Wally Oppal made the original amendments to the B.C. Elections Act in 2008, saying they were needed to prevent election debates from being “hijacked by third parties.” The amendments limited political parties to spending $2.2 million in the 60 days before the official 28-day election campaign, and advocacy groups such as unions and business groups can spend only $150,000 during that time. The B.C. Teachers’ Federation, the B.C. Nurses’ Union, the Canadian Union of Public Employees and the Federation of Post-Secondary Educators originally challenged the spending restrictions in court. editor@nanaimobulletin.com

Gag law defeat welcome news At least one of the election gag laws has been thrown out. The B.C. Court of Appeal has decided that an attempt by the provincial government to control free speech in the period before a provincial election isn’t constitutional. This after the government tried several times to restrict how much money third parties can spend in the 60-day window before an election campaign officially begins. An attempt by Victoria to cut that down to 40 days didn’t work either. Governments and political parties have interfered in the election process far too much. Elections are not the property of politicians – they are the property of citizens. They are the one chance that citizens have to determine who is in power, what policies will be brought in and what changes can be worked toward. Yet at the federal and provincial level, election spending has been restricted for years. Not only are individual candidates restricted in their spending, which does at least level the playing field a bit, but individuals, businesses, unions and interest groups have severe restrictions on how much they can spend to send messages to voters. This is what the province was trying to do in the pre-election period – mainly to cut off messages from anti-government groups. The B.C. Liberals were aiming at the B.C. Government Employees Union and the B.C. Teachers Federation, who ran pungent anti-government messages before the 2009 election officially began. Individuals, organizations and businesses should have every right to spend money before and during campaigns. The only purpose restrictions serve is to keep the election process dominated by political parties and to severely restrict the rights of citizens during what should be a free-ranging debate. The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, 201 Selby St., Nanaimo, B.C. V9R 2R2. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org
Perspective needed on Arctic melt BY TIM BALL AND TOM HARRIS With all the coverage of Arctic sea ice melt, few people noticed that records were also just set at the South Pole where 90 per cent of Earth’s ice is found. Those records are opposite to what we are seeing in the North, however. The greatest extent of sea ice ever recorded in the waters around Antarctica, and the lowest temperatures and the strongest winds ever recorded at the South Pole. NASA reports that the record was broken for the earliest in the year that the temperature has dropped below -73.3 C in Antarctica. With increased cold and changed circulation patterns, winds blowing away from the South Pole have strengthened pushing sea ice further out into the Southern Ocean. It was also strong winds, not higher temperature, that caused this year’s Arctic sea ice to break up and melt slightly more than in 2007 when it was warmer in the region. As Antarctic glaciers grow, we have also seen increased iceberg activity in the region. Contrary to the implications in Al Gore’s film An Inconvenient Truth, were it primarily warming at the South Pole, we would see fewer icebergs, not more. The number and size of icebergs calving from glaciers do not increase with warming despite what Greenpeace says either. The David Suzuki Foundation
and others get it wrong also when they speak of “glacial retreat.” Glaciers never retreat. They are always advancing. They only appear to retreat when the leading edge melts faster than the ice advances. Snowfall at the top of the glacier, not temperature, is the primary determinant of the size and mass of glaciers and Antarctica has seen an increase in the last several years, especially in the Antarctic Peninsula. This results in increased outflow that pushes the shelf ice further off the coast where it’s more subject to tides and waves causing pieces to break off more easily. This results in icebergs that alarmists cite as evidence of a melting ice cap due to “global warming”. But warming obviously decreases the number of icebergs since the glacial outflow is reduced and the snout of the glaciers stops advancing. The focus on temperature in Antarctica is particularly inappropriate since the average continental temperature is -20 C. The misunderstanding about icebergs, glaciers and melting ice caps is mostly due to the United Nations’ obsession with warming and greenhouse gases. This fear of possible future catastrophe has been a serious distraction away from rational thinking about climate. One of the main problems centres on the inadequacy of precipitation records and

COMMENT
understanding. For example, the August 2006 paper ‘Waiting for the Monsoon’ in the journal Science commented, concerning the Sahel region of Africa: “Some models predict a wetter future; others, a drier one. They cannot all be right.” The Science paper authors pointed out that, while Africa had a network of 1,152 weather watch stations that provide real-time data to the international archives, this is just “one-eighth the minimum density recommended by the World Meteorological Organization. Furthermore, the stations that do exist often fail to report.” The same issue with precipitation records exists across the world, especially in polar regions. This is a serious problem in understanding many natural phenomena since precipitation is almost always more important to climate than temperature. With the cold September in San Francisco and Alaska, and the early snows across the Midwest, Gore, Suzuki and Greenpeace must cool down the warming rhetoric or risk looking ridiculous. Shrinking and expanding glaciers and icecaps are normal. We can’t stop it, so we must focus on preparing for and adapting to whatever nature has in store for us. ◆ Tim Ball is a Victoria-based climatologist. Scooters an accident-in-waiting To the Editor, Driving up a north-end hill, a senior in a four-wheeled scooter who was on the road to my right proceeded to quickly cut in front of my vehicle at the stop sign to cross on the pedestrian crosswalk. No helmet seems to be required, hand signals are not used and flashers are often at a difficult angle to see. These neutral-coloured rigs (aside from the optional little red flag) are almost invisible on a cloudy day and many drivers seem oblivious to the flow of traffic around them. While I think that is wonderful that folks are able to get around independently, could someone please provide the official word regarding these four-wheelers and liability? Are they categorized as road vehicles, with B.C. road rules and licensing, or as pedestrian aides (similar to a motorized wheelchair)? Unfortunately, many are an accident waiting to happen. C. Pollack Nanaimo

Road rules and liability surrounding four-wheeled scooters needs to be made clear, says letter writer.
Cyclists do best when they ride predictably, with the traffic. The flow of traffic is much smoother if cyclists are travelling in the same direction as motorists. The chance of a serious collision is greatly reduced. A wrong-way cyclist does not only present a danger to himself or herself, but also to any cyclists who are riding with traffic on the same road. To the Editor, Re: Density factor in decision, Opinion, Sept. 27. The density factor doesn’t make much sense to me. It is like the proverbial saying ,which should come first, the cart or the horse? They are symbiotic. Sewer connection is needed for resident density. There would definitely be more density in Western Acres if there were sewer hook-ups. It would allow some of the larger lots to have a second home or more in some cases, thereby increasing density plus tax dollars. Also, the editorial reads, “in a perfect world, every resident within city limits would have access to the benefits of sewer services.” I realize we don’t live in a perfect world, but really, is it too much to ask for such a basic service in this day and age? Western Acres is not some outlying area. If you draw a straight line across a city map, Western Acres would be bisected by Wakesiah Avenue. Our elevation is probably the same as Vancouver Island University and students living in Western Acres had no problem walking the mile to school. Can you imagine Wakesiah residents not having city services? Your editorial also states “the people at Western Acres may have piped up a little too late.” If not now, when? Is sewer going to be cheaper to install years from now? I don’t think so. Regarding Green Lake, Coun.Fred Pattje said 36 years is way too long, and Coun. Jim Kipp said it could have been done a long time ago for a fraction of the cost. D. Budd Nanaimo

To the Editor, Re: Canadian families are changing, Sept. 29. I was glad to see a devoted mother, father, and their daughter on the front page of the Bulletin’s article on family. They may not be married under tradition, but their committed union still represents the highest expression of nature in mankind to which marriage was originally themed from. I’m partial for marriage, but remember that before there was marriage in human history, romantic love was the only emotion powerful enough to bond a male and female together long enough to provide a stable environment for young children. Extended family also played a part, but without this nuclear unit we as a species could not have moved forward or even survived. From the passion and love that holds the family together and from the natural expres-
sion of the mother and father, we gain a sense of identity, loyalty, trust, devotion, sacrifice, patience, flexibility, meaning, purpose and a sense of permanence. Without these essential qualities no civilization can last long. The sum of a human is a male and female and we inherit from our parents more than just a static blueprint of genes. But, from them, our own unique personas will naturally be augmented, polarized, and quantumized (energized/inspired) to the most natural role we play in our gender. Joey Moore of Vancouver Island University was quoted in saying that the two-parent, heterosexual family only became a cultural ideal in the mid 20th century. I respectfully disagree because his statement was a misrepresentation of the past. Before the early industrial revolution, many parents died early because of infectious diseases and war. Families were large, too, and some widows and widowers remarried for support and as well extended families often lived together often to fill the void. This was naturally well understood. Besides life’s letdowns, the nuclear family (the union of mother and father in care of the children) was always the highest model to aspire for in all cultures for the common folk. arts Songs of celebration Wright loves forming a personal connection with her fans when she performs onstage BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN
M
ichelle Wright likes to see the faces of her fans in the audience and form an intimate and personal connection with them when she performs. That connection is also part of why she creates music, because each song also has personal meaning for her. Her lyrics are inspired by life experiences and conversations with friends. Songs like She’s a K Keeper r was inspired by her female and male friends who are wonderful people but can’t find someone to share their life with. She said it speaks about a world where everyone is so connected but can’t find companionship. Her song I’ll Cry Too is about time spent with a friend and a connection of shared sadness between the two of them. Wright plays the Nanaimo Port Theatre on her Songs from The Hall Tour Sunday (Oct. 14). “It’s a celebration of my induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame,” said Wright. “It’s kind of a one of a kind tour. I can’t imagine that this will happen again.” She was inducted into the hall of fame in September 2011. Wright, a Canadian-born artist from Merlin Ont., has sold more than two million albums in the United States

and Canada. She said it was a wonderful event in her life and this is her chance to share that joy with fans. Wright said she doesn’t want to give too much away about her performance in Nanaimo because she wants it to be a surprise for her fans. However, she said audience members will get a chance to hear some of her greatest hits, such as Take it Like a Man, mixed among other songs by hall of fame inductees such as Anne Murray, Bonnie Raitt and U2. Fans also get a chance to hear songs from her upcoming, still untitled, album which will be released next spring. Wright said she likes performing concerts at smaller venues because she wants to establish a “personal connection” with fans. “It all comes down to the song and the music …does it have an authentic and an emotional connection,” said Wright. “I really look forward to connecting with my fans. If you can’t see people’s faces you can’t see them respond.” Songs from The Halls is Sunday (Oct. 14) at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $40, $35 members and groups, $15 students or $5 for eyeGo students and are available by calling 250-7548550, online at www.porttheatre. com or at the Port Theatre ticket office, located at 125 Front St.

Impersonator brings Patsy Cline to life
I
EVENING SHOW includes comedy and music.
Bonnie Kilroe likes being a diva. She impersonates the best of them including Cher, Bette Midler, Dolly Parton and Liza Minnelli. On Friday (Oct. 12) Kilroe is bringing her act to Harewood Legion for an 8 p.m. show. Her evening performance takes on a country flavour as she presents An Evening with Patsy Cline. “When I do the full Patsy Cline Tribute I love to bring comedy to my show. I will also deliver the beautiful, vulnerable emotion of her music,” said Kilroe in a press release. “I make fun of the tragedy of losing love and being heartbroken, but make no mistake, when the songs are sung, the tears will fall,” she said.
Kilroe, who grew up in the Lower Mainland, was so drawn to Cline’s music she used to wear out cassette tapes of the songs. She started her journey as a celebrity imposter during a contest seeking someone to play the lead role of Cline in an Arts Club production of A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline. She didn’t get the role but Kilroe said that was a pivotal moment for her, because after that audition she decided to become a performer. Kilroe said she created her one-woman show because she grew tired of waiting for the phone to ring when she was trying to attempt a career in film and television. The performer added to her repertoire of women she becomes on stage over the years. For the past 14 years she’s been a one-woman show entertaining audiences across
the country and in the United States. “I am part vaudevillian comic, torch singer and sexy siren all packed into a parade of parody,” said Kilroe, about her shows. “That’s why I am often dubbed as a ‘farce to be reckoned with’.” Audience members will also meet a surprise guest that will give people a hint at what type of show Kilroe is planning on performing the next time she visits Vancouver Island. An Evening with Patsy Cline is Friday (Oct. 12) at the Harewood Legion, located at 129 Harewood Rd. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. The show is for ages 19 plus. Tickets are $15, $13 for legion members in advance or $20 at the door. For more information or tickets please go to www.celeb rity-imposters.com or call 250871-7277.

I have to be solid night in and night out. If I’m not, then that’s going to affect the team.
Veteran Josh Bryan brings rounded game to Clippers’ blueline BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
f opponents want to get to the net, they’ll have to go through guys like Josh Bryan. So it’s his job this season to make that task as difficult as possible. The Nanaimo Clippers alternate captain is settling into a slightly new role in 2012-13 as the veteran leader of the team’s defence corps. Coach Mike Vandekamp doesn’t anoint No. 1 defencemen, but Bryan is the guy with the letter on his sweater, the one who will play as many minutes as anyone, the guy who will be looked to in all situations. “It’s a little bit different, being probably the leader on the back end, but I was prepared for it, that’s kind of what I was expecting,” Bryan said. Last year the defence corps was anchored by 20-year-olds Graeme McCormack and Josh Phillips, and Bryan learned from both those players. “Stepping into that kind of role is a really good opportunity for me and I’m really excited about it,” he said.

GREG SAKAKI/THE NEWS BULLETIN
Nanaimo Clippers defenceman Josh Bryan goes for a skate during practice Thursday afternoon at Frank Crane Arena.
Vandekamp said some of the reasons Bryan was given an A on his sweater this season were his work ethic and his leadership in the room. “He’s not afraid to face things head on; he’s mature that way,” said the coach. Moving forward, he wants the 19-year-old from Sidney, B.C., to try to be a consistent player.
“He’s not a flashy player. I think he needs to focus on his defensive game first and keep it simple that way,” Vandekamp said. “He’s a guy that we expect some offence from, but at the same time, that’s not really what the focus is. The focus is for him to be hard to play against and as good defensively as he can be.”
Bryan scored his first goal of the season last weekend. In 2011-12 he lit the lamp nine times and was among the league leaders in defencemen goal scoring at one point. He’d like to be able to equal that contribution this season, but if he doesn’t, it doesn’t matter. “If I get one goal this year, just that one, and we win 50 games or whatever, I’m happy with that; I don’t really care how many goals I get,” he said. “I’m more of a team-oriented, defence-first guy. I just kind of lucked out a bit last year, I think.” He knows he’ll be surrounded on the defence pairings by other players who can be similarly effective at both ends of the ice. “We’ve got a really good defensive corps,” said Bryan. “Everyone’s kind of figuring each other out now, because we’re all similar types of players. There’s no guys that are completely defensive or completely offence.” Still, as a team leader, there’s a little extra weight on Bryan’s shoulders, and he’s happy to take it on. “I know I have to be solid night in and night out,” he said. “If I’m not, then that’s going to affect the team.” GAME ON … The Clippers’ next game is Friday (Oct. 12) when the Alberni Valley Bulldogs visit Frank Crane Arena for a 7 p.m. faceoff. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Long weekend delays scores Nanaimo’s sports teams probably all had a happy Thanksgiving, but fans will have to wait a couple more days to find out just how happy. Due to early deadlines necessitated by the long weekend, sports scores from the past few days weren’t available at press time. The Nanaimo Clippers and V.I. Raiders were both in action, the Barsby Bulldogs and Nanaimo District Islanders played one another in the Kocher Classic football game and there was also soccer and a cyclocross race over Thanksgiving weekend. Please visit www. nanaimobulletin.com to catch up on some of the results, and more results will appear in Thursday’s print issue of the News Bulletin.

’DAWGS WIN 32-14 versus neighbours.
The Barsby Bulldogs kept pounding away, and eventually overpowered the Nanaimo District Islanders in the junior varsity Kocher Classic. The teams met Thursday at Nanaimo District Secondary School with the visitors winning 32-14. The ’Dawgs held a 16-14 lead at halftime, and their relentless rushing attack wore down the home team. “In the first half we had our ups and downs with a lot of big penalties,” said North Rainey, Bulldogs quarterback. “We bounced, though, and we came out and played our hearts out.” Matt Heinrichs, coach of the junior varsity ’Dawgs, said his team overcame adversity in the game and executed better when the outcome was on the line. “I thought the team

VIHJL TEAM falls to firstplace Comox.
BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
The Nanaimo Buccaneers, already shortmanned due to injuries, found themselves playing short-handed too often. It wasn’t a good combination, and the Bucs came out on the wrong end of the first-place matchup, losing to the
Comox Valley Glacier Kings 6-2 on Thursday at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. The home team got behind 5-0 early, compounding its own problems by getting frustrated with the officiating. “Hockey’s a game of emotions and it’s hard to keep your emotions in check,” said Brad Knight, coach of the Buccaneers. Beau Blanaru and Corey Renwick went on to score goals for the Buccaneers but
it wasn’ t enough. Nanaimo (4-6) fell to 1-4 in its home rink. “I’m sure the fans are frustrated with the home record but eventually it will turn itself. I think we’ll get comfortable playing at home…” Knight said. The Bucs are missing captain Travis Briggs and fellow veteran Dylan Moore to injury. GAME ON … The Buccaneers play the Campbell River Storm on Thursday (Oct. 11) at 7:15 p.m. at the NIC. sports@nanaimobulletin.com
