Osamede Obazee

‘The Golfer’ (bronze)

Continuing a long tradition of crafting symbolic objects from metal as his African forbearers have done for hundreds of years, Osamede Obazee combines traditional art forms with recycled materials and, often, New World subjects. The final result is compelling contemporary sculptures in lustrous bronze and wrought iron. Last year, his sculpture ‘The Guitarist’ stood guard full of conveyed energy outside the Element nightclub. His entry this year portrays a different individual pursuit, again displayed in bronze. ‘The Golfer’ is fresh from a year at Sioux Falls’ SculptureWalk and shows the immense talent of Obazee just as ‘The Guitarist’ did in 2011. Sculpted at the point of follow through, “The Golfer’ looks skyward from under the bill of his cap as his eyes follow the flight of a well struck ball, club draped behind him displaying a proper finishing stance. Spaces and flourishes in the figure lend the piece a bit of abstraction while staying true to form. “I like to sculpt figures engaged in activities that allow lots of expressiveness,” says the San Francisco, California-based sculptor. “Whether the work is abstract in nature or highly realistic, metal or wood, I like to incorporate elements and styles passed on by my Benin Edo tribal ancestors into fin-

ished pieces that are modern in feel.” Obazee’s body of work is impressive in its variety and mediums: ‘Embrace’ and ‘Jubilation’ are ceramic and wood abstractions respectively, ‘The Golfer’ and ‘Guitarist’ realistic figurative metals while ‘Mask and ‘Warrior’ adhere towards traditional African sculpture forms. Then there are his ornamental gates. Fusing functionality, traditional imagery and structured symmetrical patterns together with flair and stylistic flourish , he produces wrought iron beauty with a purpose. “Certainly I feel the gates I make are works of art. There is no doubt about that in my mind,” says Obazee. “Yes, they serve a purpose - but to me that is secondary to the imagery and patterns of them.” His majestic gates reside on two

continents – that of his birth and his current residence. Simultaneously, his status as one of the foremost practitioners of contemporary Africaninfluenced sculpture means his work is found world-wide, and in high demand. ‘The Golfer’ presents just one of Obazee’s many styles. Like all his sculptures, it injects influences from the past with his vision of progressive modern art. The result is sculpting that is undeniably distinctive and always lovely to admire.

CASTLEGAR SCULPTUREWALK 2013 CALL TO ARTISTS Castlegar Sculpturewalk is now accepting applicants from sculptors to take part in our 2013 event. The winner of the coveted People’s Choice Award will be purchased by The City of Castlegar for permanent display, in addition to a cash prize of $3000. Sculptures will also be judged and awarded on Artistic Merit, with prizes in that category totaling $5000.

Proposed electoral boundaries met with opposition Castlegar brief About a dozen people had the chance to talk about the proposed federal electoral map changes to three federal commissioners at a forum in Castlegar Wednesday night. The proposed changes would see Princeton and Hedley join Central OkanaganCoquihalla and Penticton join with Castlegar and Trail in the South Okanagan-West Koote-

In addition, Nelson, Montrose, Fruitvale and Salmo would join with Cranbrook and Fernie in the Kootenay-Columbia Boundary. “An overwhelming majority of people there did not agree with the changes, said Southern Interio MP Alex Atamenenko. “It’s the fact that it’s ludicrous to take Nelson and separate it from Trail and Castlegar.

Trail Briefs The issue of a shortage of burial space in the Fruitvale Memorial Cemetery can finally be put to bed. The Village of

Fruitvale council secured cemetery services for the region for the next 25 years with the announcement the Village has purchased a neighbouring strip of land. The 20-foot, by

317-foot plot will be enough for the village to fulfill burial requirements for over 25 years, said village chief administrative officer Lila Cresswell. “Based on the sales we’ve had in the last

five years, that will do us for quite a while,” she said. “That’s why we didn’t need a huge amount of space.” The Village sold its last plot in April. The cost for the new piece of land was not available. The village gets around five requests for full burial plots per year, and now they can accommodate around 80 to 150 more plots with the new addition, located between Pine and Tamarack streets. “About 85 per of people go for cremation. But there are still some that go for full burial and that’s why we don’t have any spots left,” Cresswell explained. However, Cresswell said there are

still places for cremated remains in the original cemetery, as well as columbarium spots. Village councillor Larry Gray said now the site needs fencing, to be cleared of brush and trees, it has to be surveyed and laid out. The cemetery is the place of choice for the Beaver Valley, including Fruitvale and Montrose. Film Camp fun Youth are reeling to participate in an upcoming digital film workshop. Grand Forks man conquers Ultra Beast challenge CASSANDRA CHIN West Kootenay Advertser

Of the 366 athletes who participated in the Ultra Beast, 156 managed to finish the course. Athletes have to complete courses by a certain cutoff time over the 14 hours allotted in the race. “It was definitely a challenge,” Phipps said. “This was the world championship of obstacle racing in

the Beast and Ultra Beast races, with the Ultra Beast being the first of its kind. It was through invitation and acceptance only.” Phipps, who works with the Canada Border Services Patrol at the Cascade entry point near Christina Lake, placed 14th overall, and second in his age category (he is 42), with a final time of eight hours, 56 minutes and 23 seconds.

This is Phipps’ sixth Spartan Race, though he has competed in many other races and competitions, such as the World Police and Fire Games. The Spartan Race has become a popular race over the past several years as it involves running a regular race and completing obstacles along the way in a boot camp fashion. “There are usually three different types

of Spartan Races with those being a sprint (five kilometres), Super (15-plus kilometres), and a Beast (21-plus kilometres) and I had competed in all the different ones so far this year,” he explained. “My goal was to get Top 50, as I had no idea what to expect due to the course and distance.” Phipps noted that Spartan Races offer an additional chal-

lenge that a regular race doesn’t have. “It’s a great challenge and something everyone should try,”

he concluded, adding his mother would be attempting the fivekilometre race in Vancouver next year

in May. His next challenge will occur in November in Sacramento, Calif.

comforter to stuffed animals. Under the Bags of Love program, run out of the Trail Seventh Day Adventist Church, the first 10 bags will be given out to foster children in the West Kootenay area next week. “Children in transition are often not able to take personal belongings with them,” said Sharon Jackson, the coordinator for the Trail-based program. “But Bags of Love helps ease the transition by providing items of comfort that they can call their very own.” Started in 2005 in Kentucky, It’s My Very Own/Bags of Love now has chapters all over the U.S., with Trail being one of three in Western Canada. The Trail chapter is relatively new, said Jackson, and has only been in existence since June, 2012. Already, handmade bags have been created, sewn by two church members and one community member, and an assortment of items have filled their interiors. As well, the group has received some love from the Trail Shoppers Drug Mart with donations of personal care items, and the

Sugar Shack Quilting with donations of material and handles for bags. The contents of the bags are very basic, but special, Jackson noted: a kid-sized handmade comforter, a soft cuddly toy, personal care items (comb, hairbrush, toothbrush, toothpaste), two toys for young children and age appropriate items for older children. “It warms the heart to see a smile on a child’s face when they are given something they can call their very own,” Jackson explained. Plus the bags that are collected in the area are distributed and stay in the West Kootenay, helping local children from newborn to age 18. The toys and the personal care items collected are for all age groups—the travel size is best. As well, the program is looking for volunteers to help with fundraising and to sew bags and quilts. You can check them out on the website www.itsmyveryown. org, or contact Jackson at 364-1265 (or email at sharon1j@hotmail. com) to donate.

The youth filmmaking and digital workshop is geared to engage young people in a fun and creative way. “There are still lots of open spots for teens to register for the workshops,” said Barry McLane, events manager and program assistant at KAST. “Originally they were open to teens aged 13-18, but we’ve changed it to aged 11-18. “We’re really mak-

keting for a British/ Global firm.” Her main message to retailers is: effective retail is in the detail. “There are many challenges facing businesses today such as setting measurable goals, effective marketing, using the right technology, having the right people on your team, being underfunded, and keeping your team accountable,” said Crowhurst. In the seminar, she will talk about how to overcome those challenges using best practices for immediate and future retail/ business success. how to do it,” explained project manager Mark Dennis. Dennis and his business partner Bradley Roulston have put the question out to Facebook. Through their new “Hiking Nelson” group page, they are encouraging fans to post their suggestions on their wall, and will be handing out coupons for a free coffee to the first 200 people who post their idea. “We want to harness the creative spirit of Nelson,” Dennis said. “There’s a lot of outdoor enthusiasts here. They’re the ones who know what would make their hiking experience better.” So far, suggestions include GPS trail mapping and digital makers for points of interest, as well information about the plants, trees and wildlife that hikers are likely to see on the trail. “We don’t want people to feel limited in what they ask for,” Dennis said. “There’s really no limit to what we could do with

this.” In the coming weeks, as they move into the development phase, they expect to have a team of at least 20 people working on the app, to have it ready to launch in Nelson early next year. If it’s a success here, it will be scaled up for progressively larger markets. “With all new technology, it’s easier to launch it in a limited area first, and work out the kinks before putting it out to a larger market,” Dennis explained. Roulston hopes The Seed will continue to attract new software projects to be developed in the area. “We’re trying to bring a new industry to Nelson and employ local people,” he said. “Software development can be done anywhere, and we think, why not do it here where people want to live?” For more information on the hiking website and app, and for a link to the Facebook page, visit hiking.com.

Come to Rossland and check out Maria in the Shower

The four piece jazzy old time band ‘Maria in the Shower’ returns to Rossland on Saturday, Oct. 13 to boogie down in the Rossland Miners’ Hall. Maria in the Shower is a uniquely entertaining band at the leading edge of Canada’s new folk sound. Their musical approach is a simple but potent alchemy, marrying traditional folk and jazz with lyrics that explore fundamental human questions, delivering it with

pure fun and energy. Simultaneously humorous and ap o c a l y p tic, human and other worldly, these four young men have the enter t aining power of a traveling circus with musical depth to back it up. This fast-rising quartet has performed more than 300 times

since 2009, with over 30 festival appearances

including the Kaslo Jazz Fest and the Vancouver Jazz Festival. They have been featured in newspapers

and radio across Western Canada, including CBC Radio, CKUA radio, The Vancouver Sun and many others. Maria in the Shower is hosted by the Rossland Council for Arts and Culture (RCAC) as the first show of their 2012-13 performance series. The RCAC is currently

finalizing the rest of their performances for the season for an exciting six part concert and theatre series. Tickets are $15 in advance or $18 at the door, $2 off for RCAC members. Advanced tickets are available at Out of the Cellar, Columbia Avenue Rossland or at the Charles Bailey Theatre in Trail. For more information, please visit the RCAC website at: www. rosslandcac.com or join us on Facebook.

ffor th the

Week

October O ct 12, 2012

Tip of the Week: Saturn’s entry into Scorpio last week has set the stage for some deep and powerful changes. These will occur on both personal and collective levels. That the Lunar North Node is also in Scorpio deepens the plot significantly. Together, these will synchronize with an important process of purification. Scorpio is associated with the recycling process. Death and rebirth or transformation is a core theme. Scorpio reminds us of the harsh reality that some things must die for other things to be born. Cutting a tree and making practical use of it is a basic example. Death is not a fun theme, yet it is a real one and it not only merits our respect, it commands it. Working with the processes of change and transformation is necessary and wise. What this implies or how to cooperate depends upon the situation. Accepting that all things change and this implies endings can, at best, make us that much more appreciative of life and reality in the here and now. Looking back in history, we do not have to go so far to recognize the steady flow of change. Looking forward, it ever remains our challenge, opportunity and responsibility to cooperate with it and this is where good Astrology shines brightly. P.S. The New Moon in Libra occurs on October 15th.

Shifts and changes in your overall lifestyle are influencing your perceptions and choices in relationships and vice versa. This trend will continue over the next several weeks. For the sake of success now it is important that you are ready and willing to give more than you might usually. Big changes are brewing, work with them.

You are in a creative cycle. Are you making the most of it? Procrastination is costly. Settling into a productive creative mode is important. The basic key is to show up and set time frames as necessary during which you do the work. Once you begin you will probably enjoy the process, so what are you waiting for?

A steady flow of change close to home continues. This is having a direct affect on your relationships. Improvement is a key word. Others and perhaps circumstances are pushing for and/or inspiring you to step it up somehow. With the right attitude and focus the choices you make over the next several weeks stand to produce measurable returns.

A busy time with places to go and people to see continues. Yet, you may also be yearning for more quality time spent at home and/or with family. This is a good time to do just that as the window is opening but will not remain so for too long. While diligence is good, it is also important to create balance and this includes taking the time to play, rest and to simply enjoy.

Establishing a healthier and more productive rhythm is a rising theme now. The signs and intuitive feelings of what you need to do are probably there for you to acknowledge. These are sneak previews of themes and cycles to come. Reaching out to stimulate your network of friends and allies figures prominently and this trend will continue.

Some important new initiatives have begun for you recently. These include a deepening of your perceptions, insights and understanding somehow. This trend will continue for a few years, in certain respects. Educational pursuits, research, writing, design and any other such focuses are in the spotlight. Focus to build confidence and refine your skills.

Many new dreams, plans, ideas and visions are gestating in your mind. You may even have taken some preliminary measures. You will likely take even more deliberate action this week. You may notice your energy levels have been rising steadily and this will continue. Making good use of your imagination stands to be especially rewarding,

Taking some key initiatives to realize a fuller measure of your sense of individuality continues. With your ambitions steadily rising, you may feel the need for space and freedom to follow through. Allow things to take their course and exercise patience. Yet, prepare as necessary to take assertive leads in November.

Pushing to realize your goals and make the most of opportunities in your career and/or public life has been keeping you busy. Follow through this week before you slow the pace to enjoy more quality time with friends. Gathering and or cultivating specific tools and/or skills is important now. Be willing to push for what you want, to be seen and heard and do it now!

The emphasis has been upon cultural, spiritual and/or philosophical themes of late. Exploring what you truly feel you want and need and knowing the difference between the two reflects the deeper story. An inner negotiation has probably been underway as well. Deciphering which leads to take and how and where to direct your energies is featured and will continue.

Clearing the old to make way for the new somehow is an important theme these days. Clearing, cleaning, cleanses and the like are good examples. You want to remove any and all snags and obstacles. Your focus may even seem rather intense to some. Yet, you have been and will continue to do what you feel you must to advance to the next level.

A steady flow of change in your relationships is an ongoing theme these days. Both your personal and your professional or social life are being affected. This is a dynamic cycle for you and travel has and continues to be a likely focus. The emphasis on work has perhaps made you extra serious. It is time to aim to create some balance by way of play.
