to a shooting in Bouchie Lake Sept. 5 2009. During court the victim, Jefferey Steinbrunner told jurors Gill smashed his face with an aluminum baseball bat and Brad Van Dyke shot him once in the stomach and once in the arm. Steinbrunner further testified he knew the two men prior to the incident, stating he worked for Gill tending to marijuana grow operations in 2007; he met Van Dyke through Gill. “I opened the door,
stuck my head out and that’s when I got a baseball bat across my mouth,” Steinbrunner testified. “I backed up and went to grab my bat behind my chair; that’s when I noticed it was gone.” Steinbrunner said he had not yet identified the men and thought the attack was a robbery. “I was looking for a weapon and I told them to come in.” It’s then Steinbrunner said he realized it was Gill and Van Dyke. “Clarence came at me

Bouchie Lake seeking cash DANIKA M. HEBERT Observer Reporter The Bouchie Lake Recreational Commission says they need a manager and they want the city and CRD to pay for it. At Tuesday’s Joint Planning Meeting, treasurer for the Bouchie Lake Recreational Commission, Bruce Johnston, asked council for funding to hire a rural recreational manager. “I’m here to defend and present our request for significant change in our operating budget,” Johnston said. “I hope by the end of my presentation that you will see it as something that delivers value and it’s good money spent for the taxpayers.” The treasurer drafted the proposal after recognizing opportunities for revenue were lost due to lack of organization. “Bouchie Lake Recreation Commission is asking for $22,000 to hire a rural recreation manager to manage the hall and help us reach recognized and unrecognized recreational opportunities and maintenance requirements,” Johnston said. “We have quite a few facilities, some that are well used, the outdoor ones in particular,” Johnston continued. “Our equestrian facilities get
used regularly all summer.” Johnston said he has lived in the Bouchie Lake area for more than 15 years but only recently became aware of some of the recreational facilities in the area. “It’s interesting because until I joined the commission in January of 2012, I didn’t know the outdoor rink was there,” he said. Johnston added the outdoor rink maintained by the Bouchie Lake Recreational Commission is one of the few in the area and the only one which offers free access.” “Our maintenance contractor for the outside, who floods it at four in the morning, says sometimes there are people already there,” he said. “Night shift workers get off work and come out and start playing,” Johnston explained. Johnston said if a manager was hired, for a one-year trial period, the hall may be able to take advantage of some revenue opportunities which are being underutilized, such as offering classes in the facility. “Last spring and fall we had a number of programs at the hall,” Johnston said. “We had yoga and zumba classes and they were very well accepted in the community. “They were generally full and we even made a bit of money off them.”
Johnston added there is a community member who is offering to teach cooking classes, but isn’t willing to go through the hassle of organizing the class. “This community member has worked in some of the best restaurants in British Columbia,” Johnston said. “We have an industrial kitchen which would be perfect for the class, but the instructor isn’t willing to do anything beyond preparing the menu and teaching the students.” Johnston pointed out the median age in Area B (Bouchie Lake) is 47, which he finds means fewer residents willing to travel to Quesnel to use recreational services. “Swimming lessons don’t interest us, maybe some of the classes at the recreational centre do, but for me, I have one hour of travel to get into town, park and then I have to travel another hour to get back home,” Johnston said, adding his commute to the hall in Bouchie Lake is approximately eight minutes. Since this additional funding would have to be taken out of the surplus budget, several city councillors and directors expressed concern with the sustainability of the funding and if it was a responsible way to use the surplus. pending a night in the cold can be an adventure, however for many it’s a harsh reality they face on a regular basis. Quesnel’s Seasons House is hosting Spend a Night in the Cold, tonight, Oct. 12, as both a fundraiser and an awareness event of the plight of homeless people in our society. When 17-year-old Brian (not his real name) heard from his sister about the event, he signed up right away. They know what it means to be homeless. Their mother has fought addictions for as long as they can remember and was homeless on more than one occasion. Although Brian’s parents divorced when he was six, he can remember his mother smoking marijuana before the split. Raised by a supportive father and stepmother, it wasn’t until he was about 10 that he became aware of the extent of his mother’s problem.
“It was crack, heroine and maybe even meth,” he said. “Seeing her like that is horrible, something a kid shouldn’t see.” For a time, his mother struggled with her addictions in Quesnel but eventually moved to areas where she could better access rehab programs. “She was in and out of rehab and at first we were hopeful,” Brian said. “But that changed as we saw the cycle. She’d sign herself in, then sign herself out. We recognize she probably can’t change.” When asked how he feels about his mom, Brian, without hesitation, said “I’ve loved her my whole life; she’s awesome.” He believes shelters, like Seasons House, are a good thing. He said there are people who can kick their addictions and maybe the shelter is where they start. “Just providing food and shelter is a good thing,” he said. “I’d never like to spend nights in the cold, especially in the winter.” Brian also feels the public
needs to be more aware. “Not everyone has a perfect life,” he said. If he’s learned anything from his mother, it’s to stay away from drugs. He knows he could tell his peers to not do drugs but he said, in the end, it’s their choice. The last time he saw his mom was more than a year ago, but says they usually talk on the phone a couple of times a month. “Mostly it’s just normal conversation, sometimes she talks about rehab,” he said. He added she’s apologized hundreds of times for her addiction and the impact it’s had on her children’s lives. “But she always looked after us and made sure we were safe,” he said. Right now, his mother has a residence but is still heavy into drug use. Brian will be spending tonight in the cold, raising money to help keep Seasons House operating to help people like his mother who desperately need the services. He also wants the public to know
that homelessness is an issue in Quesnel and many are at risk of becoming homeless. McNaughton Centre principal Dennis HawkinsBogle is also planning on spending tonight in LeBourdais Park. “I’m spending the night to raise awareness of homelessness with the people I interact with in Quesnel and to raise money for the shelter,” he said. He remembers, a number of years ago, he was having an intake meeting with a 16-year-old. When he asked her where she was living she said she’d been homeless for a few months. “I was shocked,” he admitted. “She’d been couchsurfing. Lots of young people in Quesnel, who are in transition between family, home, relatives and friends, are at risk of not finding a bed for the night. “Our students are at risk for many different factors, however youth and teenagers should not be homeless. I’ve witnessed
kids who are trying to figure out a support system all on their own.” Dennis said he learned a few things about spending the night in the cold from his experience last year. “I’m making sure I bring an extra blanket, a toque and a lawn chair this year,” he said. He added it’s not difficult to spend the night in a tent if you have all the right gear. “I have a really nice tent and a ground sheet as well as a good sleeping bag – I’m warm,” Dennis said. “I admire the individual who chose last year to build a cardboard shelter; I don’t know how comfortable they were.” The public is invited to join the overnighters starting at 6 p.m. in LeBourdais Park where there will be live music, a barbeque and a soccer game. There’s still time to get a pledge sheet and join those spending the night. To find out more on how to support Seasons House call 250-991-0222.

Q-town motorists reminded to obey parking signs Quesnel motorists are being asked to make sure that accessible parking spaces are there for those who really need it. Quite often, according to local “We are always accessibility champions concerned about Lynn Turner and Duddy, spots accessibility at Alison reserved for those the city, and living with a physical disability are taken up it should be by people who don’t of concern to have a placard and don’t need the extra motorists as space and convenience those spots provide. well.” The pair came to Mary Sjostrom, mayor city council with their concerns in September and, as a result, October has been proclaimed by council as Accessible Parking Awareness Month. The city is assisting people with disabilities with public education about the importance of accessible parking and will also provide additional bylaw enforcement around these spots. “We are always concerned about accessibility at the city and it should be of concern to motorists as well,” said Mayor Mary Sjostrom. “Not only do the spaces provide extra room and convenience, they provide an extra layer of safety for people in wheelchairs so they don’t have to navigate in traffic to reach the sidewalk.” The city has made some improvements to its accessible parking stalls. Many new signs have been added and the stalls were painted differently this year to provide more room for those who need it. Council has committed to working with Turner and Duddy to investigate future parking enhancements as well. There are a number of typical examples of abuse, including: Parking in an accessible stall with no permit; improperly displaying a parking permit; using an expired permit, or a permit that belongs to someone else; transporting a person with a permit and using their permit inappropriately (leaving the person who lives with a disability in the vehicle while the operator runs errands). QCEDC gives update at Joint Planning Meeting DANIKA M. HEBERT Observer Reporter April Goffic of the Quesnel and Community Economic Development Corporation (QCEDC) presented an update to council and Cariboo Regional District directors Tuesday night. Goffic reported a few projects the QCEDC has been working on, including the prospect of a haskap berry cooperative in Quesnel. “This idea came out of the Japan trip,” Goffic explained. “We had the opportunity to visit a haskap berry farm there, which was great. “They’re called the Japanese honey berry and they taste like a cross between a raspberry and a
blueberry.” The QCEDC is looking into developing a partnership with the college to bring haskap berry production to the Cariboo region. Coun. Elliott, who accompanied the Japan trip, voiced excitement for the possible partnership with the college. “When we went to the farm, we got the impression the haskap berry plant is resilient and propagates easily,” he explained. Goffic added this project has already had some farmers show interest. “We’ve had seven farms indicate interest in the co-operative, which is great,” she said. “The idea is to give them each 10 – 20 plants and grow them for three years.”
The QCDEC has been working towards finding a marketplace to sell the haskap berries once they’re harvested. Although the haskap berry tastes similar to blueberries and raspberries, it is closely related to the tomato plant. Another project Goffic discussed at Tuesday’s meeting was a new website they’ve helped launch, marketplaceBC.ca. “This website is a place to find local farms and products made in the North Cariboo and CaribooChilcotin regions,” Goffic explained. “Right now, farmers can hop onto the website themselves or they can call into our office and we’ll set them up.” Goffic also presented the plan for

a potential fibre mill in the area. “There are some fibre mills in the area, but most are co-ops and so you have to be a member to use them,” she explained. Goffic also explained a lot of fibre mills in Alberta aren’t able to keep up with the demand, making our region a perfect candidate. Coun. Elliott asked what kind of fibre
the mill would be processing and Goffic explained it would process llama, alpaca and sheep fibre. In conjunction with the potential fibre mill, Goffic said there is someone she’s spoken to who’s looking for a 600acre lot to move a herd to the area. You can contact Goffic at the QCEDC at agoffic@ quesnelinfo.com.

HIV is a real concern within our communities. You can contract HIV primarily through unprotected sex and by sharing needles. HIV can live in your body for years without you knowing and all the while you can be passing it to others. At least 25 per cent of people who are HIV+ do not know and these 25 per cent are estimated to be responsible for 75 per cent of new infections. Northern Health, in collaboration with its community partners, is working with the Province of BC to prevent the spread of HIV by expanding HIV testing, treatment, and support services to British Columbians.

MLA Musings
Stumbling Blindly Into the Future This week the BC Liberal government released its response to this summer’s Special Committee on Timber Supply’s report and recommendations. The Special Committee consisted of both Liberal and NDP MLAs, and its final report represented the unanimous agreement between the two political parties. In essence, the government has accepted the Committee’s recommendations and has “committed” to taking steps to act on them. The overall intent of the government’s so-called 10 year action plan, dubbed “Beyond the Beetle,” is to keep harvest levels as high as possible for as long as possible in order to minimize any mill closures and job losses in the near to midterm and to enable the rebuilding of the mill that burned down in Burns Lake earlier this year. To accomplish this feat the government will allow logging in areas currently set aside for other values (including old growth management zones), they will include “marginally economic stands” into their annual allowable cut calculations so they can keep mid-term harvest levels high, and they will pass legislation this spring to convert volume based licenses to area-based tenures that can be directly awarded to private companies by Cabinet. These fundamental and radical changes to BC’s forest management and forest tenure regimes will be done without an updated inventory or any additional funding for forest health and silviculture activities. Facing budget cuts in each of the next two years, the Minister of Forests can only promise that BC’s forest inventory will be updated over the next ten years. In short, we’re going to blindly stumble into a whole new forest management regime that will see the further privatization of our public forests, threaten our reputation as sustainable forest managers and put the future health and ecological integrity of our climate stressed forests at risk. Other than some creative bookkeeping surrounding future annual allowable cut determinations, there’s not one ounce of creativity or innovation in the government’s response to the complex challenges we face in our forest sector. We need to have the courage to face reality: the traditional forest sector is going to downsize, there will be mill closures and there will be job losses. In order to address the question of how soon this will occur and for how long, we must undertake an immediate re-inventory of our public forests that takes into account the implications of climate change and analyzes the potential to take advantage of economic opportunities outside of our traditional timber markets.

OPINIONS Rattling the food train
T
he massive and unprecedented recall of beef that emerged from a Brooks, Alta., processing plant should cause people to pause and think about the food chain, and how demands for low consumer prices may have a long-term effect that goes far beyond this recall. The way that meat goes from farm to the table has changed dramatically in the past 50 years. There used to be many more slaughterhouses or killing plants than there are today. There were several in B.C., including what was once called Pacific Meats and later Intercontinental Packers, in south Vancouver. There were also many small slaughterhouses. B.C. farmers and ranchers produce a large supply of cattle for the meat market each year. But for the most part, they are now shipped off to huge feed lots on the prairies for a final fattening up before being butchered. A few farmers and ranchers raise some cattle to full size and sell meat to customers or specialty butcher shops directly. In virtually all cases, this meat is more expensive—but it comes with the assurance that the final consumer knows just where the meat originated and how it has been handled. Almost every large grocery retailer buys beef from a handful of huge plants, such as the Brooks facility. It has been estimated that up to 40 per cent of the beef sold in B.C. comes from that plant. That’s why the recall list is such a long one. Grocery chains today have to offer low prices to get customers in the door, and meat prices are among the most closely-watched. A push for low prices and efficiencies isn’t a bad thing, but it should never be at the expense of good health. Hopefully, out of all this will come a demand by meat eaters for better information about the food they eat. –Kamloops This Week
Shockingly, I’m not a kangaroo T
wo weeks ago I wrote a column about losing 25 pounds this summer by changing my addiction from junk food to an addiction to healthy food and exercise. Pleased with my mental transformation, I now continue to work on my physical goals which include toning up, getting stronger and shedding about 10 more pounds. I say “about” 10 more pounds because it’s not the number on the scale that matters, but the way I look and feel. The number is just a guesstimate. Over the last few months I’ve been working out daily: the treadmill, walks around the lake, hikes, weight training - that kind of thing. For the last phase of my mission I thought I’d step it up a notch and allow my friend Carly from Vo2Max in West Kelowna to become the boss of me for four or five hours a week. After attending my first day of her brutal boot camp, I was thrilled to wake
Lori Welbourne
On A Brighter Note up the next morning feeling like a little old lady, barely able to crawl out of my own bed. Every muscle ached, and I loved that because I knew my body had been worked so much harder and different than when I exercise on my own. I would just like Carly to know one important thing: I am not a kangaroo. I can not jump rope, jump up on benches or perform that horrendous movement called the burpee with any kind of grace or accuracy. In fact, I feel and look like a complete tool every time I try. After all the hopping around she had us doing in my first class I foolishly
trainer told me recently. Perhaps that’s partly true, but moderate results are a lot better than none and I’d rather see my husband doing something he likes rather than doing something he’s not into and giving up. I might not like jumping, but after avoiding exercise classes most of my life, it turns out that I really love turning my brain off and following someone else’s lead for awhile. I know I look ridiculous performing some of Carly’s orders, but I’ll get better after attending enough of her ever-changing classes. And there’s nothing quite as gratifying as waking up a day after a great workout feeling like a little old lady. Except, perhaps, a little old lady who’s finally learned how to jump. expected less of it in my second. I was wrong. I understand that these explosive movements can get the body responding more dramatically than with the more comfortable physical activity I’ve been doing on my own, but that doesn’t make me love doing it. I remind myself though, that if I can change my lifelong junk food addiction to a healthy food addiction, anything is possible. My husband, on the other hand, has no interest in learning to love Carly’s boot camp. “No thanks,” he said decisively when I asked him if he wanted to try a class. I can’t say I was surprised. Although I would enjoy watching him struggle like me, I know it’s not his thing, and when it comes to exercise I’m a firm believer in doing what you want to do or you won’t stick with it. “Moderate exercise will only get you moderate results,” another fitness

Trudeau: just another political non-entity Editor: Re: Some like it hot, Editorial, Opinion page, Observer, Sept. 26. I’m afraid that I don’t share the editor’s enthusiastic endorsement of Justin Trudeau as a candidate for leadership of the Liberal party. His father, P.E.T. left a mighty big pair of moccasins to fill that no Liberal leader since has managed to fill. Justin will be just another political nonentity, the scion of an establishment family, trading on his name to compensate for his lack of credentials. Canadians and the
Letters to the Editor
Liberal party deserve better. I never knew what the word “charisma” meant until “Trudeau-mania” was hyped by the media. P.E.T. was swept into office on a wave of popularity rare in Canadian politics. He is best remembered for the infamous “Salmon Arm One Fingered Salute”, adding “Fuddle Duddle” to the Canadian lexicon, establishment of the National Energy Board and the beginnings of the criminalization of firearms ownership that led to the licencing of firearms owners and the now defunct Firearms
Registry program. None of these won him any favours in the west. When asked how far he was prepared to go after he invoked the War Measures Act during the FLQ Crisis, he replied “Just watch me!” That took guts coming from a francophone Prime Minister and cost him votes, this time in Quebec. Fondly, I remember him doing a pirouette behind the Queen, his red rose boutonniere, and the iconic image of him paddling a canoe, wearing a buckskin jacket. As for Justin, “... his passion for social justice
and climate change, delivering speeches on gay rights, youth involvement, affordable housing and citizenship ...” make him sound more likely a candidate to replace the late NDP leader Jack Layton rather than the next leader of “Canada’s natural ruling party”. His stated intention of making the Liberal party the party of the middle class sounds too proletarian for the Liberal elite. As for his alleged “easyon-the-eyes appeal”, I think he needs a good haircut, free to MPs, I believe. Both Preston Manning
and Stephen Harper have been criticized for their too perfect, Teflon hair. It takes more than “really great hair, designer jeans and fitted button downs” to make a good leader. By those standards, Sarah Palin would have been a good president for the Americans and she has great legs. When it was announced that Merritt rancher Judy Guichon was to be our next Lt. Governor, no mention was made of her hair, clothes or good looks. To do so would have served to diminished the authority and grace of her
office as representative of the Queen. Instead, her list of accomplishments and service to the people of British Columbia were made known. If it is true that “... politics needs Trudeau, Canadians need Trudeau ...”, then we are saying that we are willing to trade glamour for substance, ‘bling’ for ability and charisma for accomplishment. We’ve been down this road before. People truly get the government, police and army they deserve or are willing to pay for. Todd Birch Quesnel

Country star in concert at Seniors’ Centre Oct. 18 ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter Promoters have booked Michelle Wright to perform a 30-city tour, beginning with Campbell River Oct. 13. Quesnel fans can now purchase tickets for her show here Oct. 18 at the Seniors’ Centre. In conversation with Wright, she said her audiences are historically between 300 – 700 which provides a more intimate connection with the crowd. “At one point I didn’t know how to relate to the smaller venues, I was accustomed to large concerts,” she said. “Now I’ve come to appreciate the smaller venues, you feel a connection to the audience you can’t feel in larger venues.” But having fun on tour tops her priorities and for Wright that’s what keeps her on the road.
Her tour, Songs from the Hall, is a celebration of her own induction into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 2011. “As a recent Hall of Fame inductee, we tried to figure out how to celebrate this and the idea of doing songs of other hall of fame artists like Anne Murray, Merle Haggard, Aretha Franklin and Bonnie Raitt, seemed like a great idea.” Wright sifted through many of the various Halls of Fame, searching for songs and artists that would suit her tour and pay homage to other Hall of Fame inductees. As a native Ontarian, born in Chatham and raised in Merlin, Wright remembers Motown songs providing a strong influence on her musical development. Her Songs from the Hall will include that genre as well as a little rhythm and blues, pop, of course country
and she said just a smidge of rock. “One of the challenges I faced was narrowing down the list of songs I wanted to include in the tour,” she said. “I went through hundreds of songs and decided on a cross section of all the decades and genres. Where to start and where to end was the hard part.” As to her own induction to the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, Wright said she felt privileged and honoured to be named. She said usually inductees are at the end of their career before they are inducted into a hall of fame but she was quick to say she’s far from the end. “I certainly wasn’t going to suggest they call me in 15 years,” she said with a laugh. “The fun thing is now I’m doing a 30-city tour celebrating my induction. I’m excited about it.”
Wright said she had reduced her touring dates to about 100 a year which provides a nice balance between away and home with her husband and dogs just outside Nashville, Tennessee. When asked how she has avoided the pitfalls of life on the road, fame and the consequences of a destructive and stressful lifestyle, Wright admitted after taking to the road at 20 years old, she found herself with an alcohol problem. “I dealt with the issue and have been sober ever since.” She added things work out for the best, referring to her first record label contract at 29. “That’s late for most young artists, but it worked out well for me.” Wright says she treasures time spent curled up on her couch watching TV or getting together with friends for potluck dinners and movie nights.

“My husband is also on the road and we are grateful for time spent at home together. “I’m really lucky I get to stay at home and do the simple and mundane things like cooking, cleaning and laundry, then I get to dress up and go to big parties.” Show business is very challenging and everyone realizes all the work that has to be done – venues must be booked, tickets sold and everyone needs to stay healthy, she said. And keeping the stress low isn’t always possible. “You have to be able to handle the stress,” Wright said. “It’s important to have fun and I try to lead by handling it all through having a good time.” But she admitted much of the success or failure isn’t within her control. “I write a song but have no idea if the public will like it, we book concerts and sell tickets but again
no idea if people will come, maybe that’s why my cupboards are so organized?” Wright boards the bus Oct. 9 in Nashville for the four-day trip to Campbell River where her Canadian Songs of the Hall tour begins. Organizing this tour has been an eight-month effort by her staff and Wright is very aware of how hard they all work. Once she’s on the road all the other aspects of touring kick in, but she’s looking forward to being back on stage. Although this tour is not promoting a new album for Wright, she did say she’s working on a new release which is expected to be out in the new year and will contain new music. Tickets for the Michelle Wright concert are $35 available at Circle ‘S’ Western Wear for the Oct. 18 show at 7:30 p.m. in the Seniors’ Centre.

The third film in Quesnel Film Club’s fall lineup, The Intouchables plays at the Carib Theatre Oct. 18 at 6:30 p.m. Already breaking box office records as one of the highest grossing non-English language films of all time, Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano’s The Intouchables has become a worldwide sensation. Nominated for nine César Awards® (France’s equivalent to the Academy Awards®), where Omar Sy won for Best Actor (beating The Artist’s Jean Dujardin), The Intouchables tells the story of the improbable friendship between Philippe (François Cluzet) a wealthy quadriplegic, and Driss (Sy), a young offender of Senegalese descent, who is hired as his live-in caregiver. A widower, Philippe lives with his teenage daughter in a luxurious Paris apartment. When a paragliding accident leaves him paralyzed from the neck down, Philippe requires a caregiver to assist him with his daily physical needs. With the help of his assistant Magalie (Audrey Fleurot) he interviews a number of highly qualified candidates, all of whom he subsequently rejects in favour of Driss, a recently released ex-con who applied for the job only to ensure he continues to get welfare payments. Charmed by Driss’ brash self-confidence and sometimes brutal straightforwardness, the jaded Philippe finds the young man’s lack of pity to be precisely what he wants in a caregiver. Propelled by Sy’s charismatic performance, The Intouchables is a well-executed and thoroughly enjoyable culture-clash comedy about a friendship that transcends the social and economic divide. Based on a true story, writer-directors Nakache and Toledano add just enough real-life seriousness to anchor their narrative — but this simple yet elegant film never loses its sense of humour. Tickets for The Intouchables are $9 (regular admission) and $7 (seniors) which includes film club membership. For more information call 250-747-7422 or 250-747-3979 or join the club’s facebook page at Quesnel Film Club or visit the website www.quesnelfilmclub.ca.

In a continued effort to encourage higher rates of recovery, BCUOMA has built a strong support network across the province. Today, participation includes 209 brand-owner members, 39 collectors and processors, 520+ return collection facilities and more than 4,000 generators. In addition, BCUOMA is reprising its successful ambassador program this summer – with two ambassadors touring the province to educate and raise awareness of the importance of used oil and antifreeze recycling.
Although it’s commonly accepted that oil and antifreeze are not household garbage we can simply throw out, more than one million litres of used oil ends up in BC landfills every year. When you consider that it only takes one drop of oil to contaminate a million drops of water, the problem is clear: there’s just too many drops to count, too many to ignore.
Protecting our province from the harmful effects of used oil and antifreeze must be a responsibility we all share, together. So please, next time you look to dispose of used oil or antifreeze materials, find a collection facility near you. Here are three easy ways to do so:

By recycling your used oil and antifreeze products, you’re playing an important role in preserving our environment for future generations. As of July 1, 2011 antifreeze and antifreeze containers have been included within the broader recycling program. From the 10 million litres of automotive antifreeze sold in BC each year, about 45% will be available for collection and recycling. Please check for a collection facility near you.

Historical Footnotes
This road led to many endeavours along its route, such as the Collins Telegraph line, Barnards Express stage coaches and several ranches 150 years ago. Many people walked their way to Quesnel and Barkerville, a remarkable feat. Gus Friedenberger bought a piece of land north of Kersley and soon recognized the difference in his
productive field where the old road ran. The compacted earth of the trail resisted the growth of crops and forest and is visible today as the photo shows. Over time, Gus has found many artifacts from those days such as heavy draft horse iron shoes or smaller shoes from saddle horses, oxen and small ponies, bits of harness, chain hooks, old balance weigh scales and several sizes of wrenches. Automobiles, a generation later, left

tires, jacks, a carbide lamp (stamped 1914 Ford on the back) an old “Bertmar” pocket watch, tire wrenches, a jar that held two nuggets of gold, pulleys and tools for specific makes of vehicles. It’s enough to make one want to take a gold pan and prospect the old grade. Gus has not built on the road surface, protecting the past as a historical museum. Perhaps we should GPS all of the old path in recognition of the work done by
pioneer hands and of interest to current historians who like to put a foot in the past saying “I was there.” England and Scotland have used these old paths as valued tourist and local interests, with the cooperation of the land owners. A local example of that would be to follow the road described in the pioneers book by the Allens “The First 60 Years” which went from the Knauf’s ranch down to the Blackwater Road,
near Knickerbocker Road. It was built over several hard years by a husband and wife, almost 100 years ago and now waits for you to put your foot in history, one Sunday afternoon. Spring or fall are the best times as the forest undergrowth is thick in summer. Phone the Knauf’s first for permission and directions. Province introduces single harvest permit The province is introducing a single cutting permit procedure to make it easier for local governments, First Nations and other non-commercial organizations throughout the province to harvest timber from community forests. Right now, organizations that manage community forest agreements have to apply for a permit for each site in their licence area where they want to cut down trees, a system which often leads to the need for multiple permits. The change means that eligible organizations will only need a single cutting permit, good for up to four years, for the entire community forest. It’s a simpler process, which allows community based forestry operations to be more responsive to community need and market demand. The streamlined process supports the government’s forest sector strategy commitments to improve access to forest tenures for a range of users and identify and pursue community forest agreement opportunities. “The B.C. government is a strong supporter of the community forest concept. Community forests support local social, economic and environmental priorities, said Steve Thomson, Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. “They help maintain jobs and recreational opportunities, foster long-term environmental
stewardship and build a stronger sense of community. “This process will allow greater flexibility for community forests to support the needs of small, value-added manufacturers in rural communities. Kevin Davie, president of the British Columbia Community Forest Association, added.
“Small, valueadded manufacturers and community forests help support local economies by providing employment. This announcement comes at a critical time in our economy, and we are proud to have been able to work with Minister Thompson’s staff in achieving this important goal.
Quick fact: • Community Forest Agreements are long-term, area-based licences designed to encourage community involvement in, and management of, local forests. There are 47 agreements in place throughout the province with an annual allowable cut of 1.3 million cubic metres of timber a year.

HIs name was Jason K
arl Moffat makes a big impression. At 6’4” and 260 pounds, barbwire tattoos snaking up his arms, Moffat has only a hair less of an imposing persona than his in-ring alter ego: Jason the Terrible. Fans that have followed wrestling in its varying iterations know the name as it’s been bumped from Puerto Rico to Japan and played by a variety of wrestlers. Moffat, however, is the original, an alumni of the Hart’s Stampede Wrestling and current driver for Arrow Trucking in Quesnel. Though a horrible accident during his heyday cut short his wrestling career, Moffat, or in this case Jason the Terrible, is climbing back in the ring this month, Oct. 20, in Edmonton for the return of the Legends. “I’m looking forward to it. It will be a hard core match, most likely a barbwire match,” he said. “The ring will be wrapped in barbwire and we’ll have fun throwing each other into it. And it will be real barbwire. I do not do fake gimmicks. That is one of the things Jason was known for.” It will be a tag team match with fellow wrestler Katana against the tag team C-Block. At 53 years old, and still ready to go, Moffat has more stories behind him than most have collected by the 50-year mark. With a new bout coming up, that may lead into other, sporadic matches, he has a few more stories in his future too.
In Calgary, where he moved to work on the oil rigs, he crashed the ring in a Stampede Wrestling match he was watching. “My introduction to wrestling was a little different than most. Most buy their way in to be trained; I fought my way in. I was a young fan watching it from when I was two years old on the TV in Windsor, Ontario. Then I moved to Calgary and found out there was wrestling there. I never thought I could become a wrestler because it was in the states... I was about 20 years old, working on the oil rigs and extremely strong. I started going to the matches and one day I saw a fellow countryman, Robbie Stewart, (I am a Scotchman) getting beaten up in the ring by four guys and I hit the ring and proceeded to beat up the wrestlers. The match spilled out onto the floor and the next thing I know Stu Hart has got me by the belt at the back of the building and he’s yelling at me.” After the brawl, Moffat was invited back to “The Dungeon,” the training basement of the Hart’s. A childhood love of wrestling kept him coming back to face hours of devastating holds and harsh workouts for two years, while many other wrestlers tried and gave up. On his first trip to the dungeon, the Harts put Moffat through his paces, making him run for an hour, followed by hitting the heavy bag for an hour, which was followed by an hour of pumping iron, after

which he was put in the ring where he was put through his paces. It is this stamina that Moffat is known for and of which he is proud. “It’s Jason; you take a beating and keep coming,” he said of the character he plays. He said he saw many wannabe wrestlers go into that dungeon and be put through such torture they would scream and never come back. Moffat may have screamed when they ‘stretched’ (a euphemism he uses for being put in a painful hold) him, but he always came back. Despite not being taught, just stretched and made to spar with the Harts, Moffat learned during his years in the dungeon. He paid attention and got the most out of what the Harts had there. After two years of the pain
Moffat got his chance to hit the ring. His first real taste of wrestling was a stint in Hawaii, for which he never even got paid because the promoter died. And while other promoters wouldn’t go to such extreme lengths to avoid paying, it was his introduction to an underbelly of wrestling that turned his stomach. It was after Hawaii things started to take off, though not so much in his hometown. His relationship with the Harts was a rough one and jobs with the Harts were on and off, so when the chance came to leave, Moffat jumped at it. First he was off to Vancouver as Karl Moffat, then he went back east, before getting a full-time gig in Calgary with Stampede wrestling as a body guard for Athol Folly, where he found the nickname ‘Butch’ after Folly forgot his name
while introducing him. From there he continued to tour, this time farther east than before, all the way to the end of the east, in the land of the rising sun. In Japan he picked up another monicker: the Jackal. He would continue touring extensively until the early end of his career, doing another tour of Japan, tours in Canada and the U.S. and in Puerto Rico, where he first wrestled in the guise of Jason. “While I’m in Japan on my second tour I get a phone call from the booker in Puerto Rico, Rotten Ron Star. He asked me if I would ‘Do Jason?’ I asked him ‘What do you mean ‘Do Jason?’ He said, ‘The gimmick, Jason the Terrible. Could you do that gimmick.’ I said ‘I don’t know.’ He told me I’ll book you into Puerto Rico. You’ll fly from Japan to Puerto Rico and spend the winter here in Puerto Rico.’ That’s better than spending the winter in Calgary. So I rented a bunch of movies in Japan, but they’re in Japanese so I turn the volume down and watch the movies. I watch Jason and I think OK, I can do this. So I call my girlfriend in Vancouver and get her to get me a Jason mask. She ships it to Puerto Rico and when I got there I started doing Jason. Back then I was still wearing wrestling attire. The first tour went pretty good for a guy that was still pretty green and was doing this hard core gimmick,” he said. see PAGE A26

New life in the Cariboo for the man behind Jason from A25 “That’s basically the birth of Jason the Terrible. Many have tried to do my gimmick while I’ve been gone. Often imitated but never duplicated.” He was on his way up, with booking in Germany and a new deal to wrestle for WCW in the U.S. After inking the deal and flying back to Calgary, Hart convinced him to wrestle for him in Yellowknife. A combination of visiting his sister and brother-in-law, who lived in Yellowknife at the time, and some vestigial loyalty to the Harts convinced him to take the trip before heading south. It was a fateful decision and on July 4, 1989, a date Moffat remembers well, he took the trip that would end his career. Riding in a rented van, the crew of wrestlers, including Davey Boy Smith and
Chris Benoit among others, got into an accident. All the other fighters were wrestling a week after, a couple were wrestling the next day. Moffat, however, took a bad hit from an improperly stowed spare tire. “The spare tire came forward shoving my leg under the seat in front of me, shattering my shinbone, tearing out my knee and busting my ankle,” he said. “The Japanese boy in the seat in front of me bounced up in the air and when the van went sideways he went out the window I caught him by the pants and pulled. He landed on my neck breaking my back and my neck, paralyzing my legs and my left arm. Fortunately the neck break wasn’t that bad and it was able to mend itself. The leg was a different story. I grew a new shinbone.” He spent six months in a cast, then, when
he was told to do physical therapy they found that the bone had not mended. With only five per cent of the bone mass in his shin, it would bend in the middle. This resulted in major surgery, in which they put a steel rod in his shin, attaching bone fragments to it in hopes that it would grow back. While they were working on getting his shin to grow back, it became infected, with Moffat running a fever of 108 degrees Fahrenheit at his worst. This convinced the doctors they had to remove the leg, which they prepped the table for before coming back to find his fever had dropped to a manageable temperature. “I have a God that loves me,” he said. But that was the end of Moffat’s wrestling career. The fallout from the accident, combined with years of promoters lying

and an undercurrent of rot, left Moffat with complex feelings regarding the wrestling world. “As much as I miss the physicalness of wrestling I do not miss the ugliness,” he said. After the accident, Moffat fell into some bad years before straightening himself out and finding God. In 2006 he moved back to help after his dad had two hip surgeries.
It’s a decision he has never regretted. “I love my life here,” he said. “I love Arrow Trucking. They treat me like a king there.” Now with a new career ahead of him in the trucking industry and a side gig of wrestling to indulge in, Karl says he’s happier than he’s ever been. ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Thinking outside of the box is what sets you apart from most, Aries. When you are put to the test, you seldom fail to come through. This is a good selling point with potential employers. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, some people just don’t understand you, and that is OK with you. It can be good to be a bit mysterious, especially when it comes to romance. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Analyzing spending and other financial concerns should be at the top of your priority list, Gemini. It is always a good idea to keep on top of where your money is going. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, communication is key if you want to make real progress. Actions can be misconstrued if you don’t accompany them with some thorough explanations. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Others could find your enthusiasm infectious this week, Leo. Don’t be surprised if you have coworkers signing up to be on your team. At home you’re much more mellow. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, achieving your toughest goal won’t be easy. Those who survive the challenges become stronger overall. This week you are certainly put to the test. LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, big plans are in place, and you can be excited about the prospect for some change. Make a few adjustments each day and the transition will go smoothly. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, don’t let others underestimate your abilities. Once you set your mind to something, it is very hard to direct you otherwise. Capitalize on your dedication at work. SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, you are ready to pull out all of the stops in the romance department. Whether you’re single or attached, focus on ways to make your partner feel very special. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, a few things have gone wrong lately, but the good thing is you haven’t let them get you down. Good things certainly come to those who are patient. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, take inventory of your belongings and determine if there’s anything you can donate. You can clear out clutter and do something positive at the same time. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, things seem out of sorts, but you haven’t been able to figure out what is off-kilter. Leo may shed light on the situation. The Atom Thunder played a double header last Sunday against Williams Lake, winning both games. The Thunder won both games handily, with a three point lead, 8-5, in the first and an even greater spread in the second, 12-4. The kids played very well for their first games. “I was quite happy with how they handled themselves,” Coach Gord Salmons said. “We have a very young team this year with nine first year Atom players. But we have a pretty solid core of second years as well.” The team hosts their home tournament this weekend starting Friday. They play at 5 p.m. Friday against 100 Mile, 8:30 a.m. Saturday against Vanderhoof, 4:30 p.m. Saturday against P.G. and 6:30 a.m. Sunday against Williams Lake. The finals are at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
