TERRACE - A complete rebuild of the 4500 Block of Scott in the horseshoe area is one of the city’s last major road projects of the year. The work included replacing piping infrastructure running underneath the roadbed. Other major projects this year included repaving a major portion of Lakelse Ave. as it runs through downtown Terrace.

Kitimat council takes a very bold step to ban cardboard from municipal dump By Cameron Orr THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

174 5th Street, Kitimat Hours: Monday and Tuesday from 10am to 4pm.

KITIMAT - Think twice before sending your new television’s box to the dump. Kitimat Council just passed a ban on residential cardboard at the landfill. That means now you’ll have to send your packaging and cereal boxes to the KUTE recycling depot on Third Avenue in the Service Centre. The motion, brought forward by councillor Mario Feldhoff, continues a trend of programs designed to increase the life of the landfill. While noting a lot of people already use KUTE for their recycling, Feldhoff added that “Sad-

ly, not everyone does.” “It’s time to incrementally take things up when it comes to residentially-generated cardboard,” he said, noting it adds to other programs such as segregating metal, car batteries and tires at the landfill. Phil Germuth supported the motion, while asking if KUTE could handle the additional cardboard traffic from the community. Mayor Joanne Monaghan said they could, and Feldhoff said that any potential issues is something to work out with KUTE as they come up. “I’m sure we’ll hear about it if there are some challenges,” he said. Mary Murphy was also in favour of the motion but added that

she’d like to look at plans in the future to make the depot more accessible and user friendly. “It’s not user friendly where it’s located and some people don’t have the ability to go down and drop off their cardboard,” said Murphy. KUTE President Barb Hall told the Sentinel she does believe the depot has enough capacity for an increase in cardboard drop offs, saying that right now they send a shipment whenever they get enough to fill a truck. “We just proabbly have to ship a little more often,” she said, noting that it’s hard to know how much extra cardboard this really means. She’s happy with council’s

direction on cardboard, even as news of the motion came as a surprise to her. “If you walk around on garbage day for particular streets it’s amazing how much cardboard is in the garbage,” said Hall. She said she hopes they ease the cardboard ban onto people and make it voluntary at first, just as the town did for businesses when they banned cardboard to the landfill from them. As for their location, she said they have no plans to move and their location is keeping with the town plan. Challenges with centralized drop-off locations also means that’s unlikely. Last year KUTE shipped 206.12 tonnes of cardboard.

CN blocks all access to Rupert waterfront By Shaun Thomas

The new barriers and signage at the waterfront erected by CN, blocking access to the waterfront.

PRINCE RUPERT - Prince Rupert residents who have become accustomed to walking along the road just past Rotary Waterfront Park will notice new barriers and signs in the area alerting them that they would be trespassing should they decide to do so. The barricades and signs were put up on Oct. 3 in locations around town leading on to CN’s waterfront property, and the company’s regional manager of public affairs Emily Hamer says it is due to safety concerns with the public on the railway’s property. “As part of our commitment to safety, CN is prohibiting access to CN land from 11th Street, Graham Avenue and Bill Murray Way. Over the next few weeks we will be erecting private property signs and indicating that there is no trespassing,” she said, noting it would be a gradual transition but that there may be penalties involved in the future. “CN police will be on site to monitor the site, educate people and ensure public safety. CN police will be giving warnings to residents, and under the

Railway Safety Act people could be ticketed and fined.” The CN property includes not only the road, but the beach and the water rights below the road meaning anything past Waterfront Park is off limits. Acting mayor Anna Ashley says that the City expected something to be done to restrict access given construction planned in the area, and says she hoped to be able to provide residents with a bit more of an update when council met on October 9. “There is not much we can do about it because where they put up the barriers is private property. What we want to do is speak with CN and the Port Authority and see what the intention is,” she said, adding that CN could have put up fencing instead of the barriers. “We want to work with them to provide as much public access as possible...Hopefully we will come up with something that works for everyone.” However, according to Prince Rupert Port Authority spokesperson Michael Gurney, the barriers and restricted access to the area is entirely up to CN as it is their property.

Enbridge rep discusses impact of pipeline on gas prices By DeLynda Pilon THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE GEORGE - Todd Nogier, manager of corporate and western access communications for Enbridge, said the Northern Gateway Alliance pipeline will cause a negligible gas rise at the pump, if it causes an increase at all. Robyn Allan, a leading economist who recently visited the city, who said consumers would see a three cent increase in the price every year at the pump for 30 years, is mistaken. “That’s not correct at all,” Nogier said. “I believe she’s basing her analysis of the rise in gas prices on what she says is a $2 to $3 per barrel rise in oil prices for each year of the project. Our application states the amount of rise will be a $2 to $3 per barrel rise in total.” He said clearly a total rise of $2 to $3 per barrel for the project would produce different numbers than a similar rise every year.

“There will be a negligi“It is our most ble affect, if any affect at all valuable export,” he on retail gas prices,” he said. said. “We can increase He added that Enbridge that value by diversifyis already considering transing our markets.” porting oil into eastern The Northern GateCanada, a suggestion Allan way pipeline is a twin made during her lecture. system so it imports “Enbridge has an apcondensate and exports plication with the regulaoil. He said the economic benefits

of the pipeline to not only the province, but the entire country, are vast. “This is going to be a tremendous generator of economic development,” Nogier said. “There will be 3,000 jobs filled at the peak of construction.” He added they’ve committed to ensuring 15 per cent of those hired are First Nations. In the end, about 1,000 permanent jobs will be created. “Suggestions are being made to try and divert people’s attention from the reality. Our experts have analysed the economic benefit.” He said $800 million alone will be spent in northern communities along the right-of-way for the pipeline. “The facts are this is going to be a big driver of the economy going forward,” Nogier said. The joint review panel on the Northern Gateway Alliance pipeline will spend the next three seeks in Prince George during the final hearing stage for the project. In the

city talks will revolve around the safety and integrity of the pipeline, its socio-economic impacts as well as emergency response plans. Earlier, in Edmonton, the final hearings revolved around the economics of the project. In Prince Rupert the discussions will revolve around marine issues. “This is a chance for not only the JRP but the public to hear the facts and all the sciene behind it as well as the years of environmental testing and engineering that’s gone into the process,” Tod Nogier, manager of corporate and western access communications for Enbridge, said. “We’ve been looking forward to this for some time.” Community meetings were ongoing from January through August, he said. “Then in September we started the final hearing stage,” he said. “This is a chance to get the facts out there. It is an important project, not only for provinces of B.C. and Alberta, but the country as a whole.”

Hospital Foundation supported The Northern connector

KITIMAT - The Kitimat General Hospital Foundation is the happy recipient of numerous and generous contributions from community organizations and residents in 2012. More than $23,000 has been raised in the last eight months, towards improving health care and facilities for the Kitimat General Hospital. The Snowflake Community Fairgrounds Society, through the 2012 Bull-O-Rama, donated $20,500, the Kitimat Kinsmen Club donated $2,000 and memorial gifts and tribute gifts provided the balance. Chairperson Corinne Scott said that the generous contributions will be used towards an additional wing for Mountainview Lodge, increasing the number of extended care beds available. The Kitimat General Hospital has an ongoing wait list of seniors requiring nursing support in extended care, and the more urgent cases are being cared for by utilizing acute care beds in the hospital. To assist the hospital and Doctors in freeing up acute care beds for surgical and other patients, the Hospital Foundation has taken on the task of fundraising for a new extended care facility. Scott is happy that residents are becoming more aware that memorial gifts to the Hospital Foundation are a way of remembering a loved one, as well as tribute gifts, in the name of a

friend, to celebrate special occasions. The Kitimat General Hospital Foundation was established to

increase and improve the provision of medical care through receiving, investing and administering bequests, endow-

ments, trusts and other financial investments to fund items not covered in the Northern Health Authorities budget.

Passenger traffic on the upswing at northwest airport TERRACE – Once again, the number of passengers at the Northwest Regional Airport have hit records with September 2012 being the busiest September the airport’s ever seen. The month saw 12,700 passengers fly either to or from Terrace making it the second busiest month this year, topped by August which saw 13,808 passengers through the doors. As of last month’s end, this year’s passenger count clocked in at 103,741 — keeping steady the trend of increased traffic compared to former years. Airport officials say the number of people who take passenger flights to and from the airport may decrease over the next few months, but will pick back up again. “August is usually our peak travel time and then (numbers) start waning,” said airport manager Carman Hendry. “Then it goes down until January and then it starts to progress back

up again.” October’s start marked a 16 per cent increase in traffic compared to last fiscal year and a 15 per cent increase for the calendar year, Hendry continued.

September 2011 saw 11,291 passengers, meaning a 12.5 per cent climb in traffic for September 2012. Hendry said the increase in construction and industrial-project-

related workers travelling here and back again have been keeping numbers up. “There is an awful lot of construction workers coming through, a lot of business people that

Former Kitimatian making great recovery after being injured in an accident in Alberta By Cameron Orr

KITIMAT - So how is Steven Jeffrey doing these days? Now outfitted with a prosthetic leg, the former Kitimatian, now of Fort McMurray, is well on his way to resuming his life after losing his left leg in a random accident. Steven was struck by a vehicle this past June. The former Rio Tinto Alcan employee was paid a visit a few weeks ago by local man Chuck Taylor, who was inspired to visit Steven after hearing of the accident. Chuck actually didn’t know Steven all too well previosuly but he knew his parents well and Steven went to school with Chuck’s wife. “We visited his whole family,” said Chuck. “He’s done really, really amazing.” Chuck has a prosthetic leg of his own so had much encouragement and advice to offer Steven on his road to recovery. Steven is at a facility called Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital in Edmonton for the time being but Chuck said they expect him to be discharged by Oct. 17. In fact things are going so well for him that Chuck and Steven will both be competing in next June’s Extremity Games in Texas. Chuck competes in kayaking, cycling and rock climbing, while he said Steven is undecided as yet. “Everything he’s had to go through in the last month, he’s had to learn how to walk all over again, had to learn how to balance all over again,” said Chuck. Yet it’s just a matter of time for him to complete his therapies and be walking again and even riding bicycles, said Chuck. “He’s a pretty strongwilled guy,” said Chuck. “He’s feeling really good and his family’s doing good.” He added, “It’s a different life all of a sudden.”

TERRACE - The Terrace Fire Department is urging residents to “Have Two Ways Out” during Fire Prevention Week, October 7-13, 2012. If you woke up to a fire in your home, how much time do you think you would have to get to safety? According to the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), one-third of Americans households who made and estimate they thought they would have at least six minutes before a fire in their home would become life threatening. Unfortunately, the time available is often less. That’s why the Terrace Fire Department is teaming up with NFPA during Fire Prevention Week, October 7-13, 2012, to urge residents to “Have Two Ways Out!” This year’s theme focuses on the importance of fire escape planning and practice. In 2010, U.S. fire departments responded to 369,500 home structure fires. These fires caused 13,350 civilian injuries, 2,640 civilian deaths, and $6.9 billion in direct damage; one home structure was reported every 85 seconds in 2010. Fire is unpredictable and moves faster than most people realize. Having a tried and true escape plan with two ways is essential to ensuring your family’s safety should fire break out in your home. The Terrace Fire Department recommends the following tips for planning your family’s escape: Make a map of your home. Mark a door and a window that can be used to get out of every room, get your children to put a “post it note” on two ways out of every room. Choose a meeting place outside in front of your home where everyone can meet once they’ve escaped. Draw a picture of your outside meeting place on your escape plan. Have a grown-up sound the smoke alarm and practice your escape plan with everyone living in your home. Keep your escape plan on the refrigerator and practice the plan twice a year or whenever anyone in your home celebrates a birthday. This week the Terrace and Thornhill fire departments took the fire safety house to Terrace and Thornhill schools, targeting all Grade 4 classes during Fire Prevention Week to promote “Have Two Ways Out!” The Terrace Fire Department visited Terrace schools on Wednesday, October 10th and Thursday, October 11th, and the Thornhill Fire Department visited Thornhill Elementary on Friday, October 12th. To learn more about “Have Two Ways Out!” visit NFPA’s Web site at www.firepreventionweek.org. McDonalds Restaurant will again be sponsoring our annual Fire Chief for a Day Contest. This contest is open to all Terrace and Thornhill students from Kindergarten to Grade 6. Entry forms will be distributed at school and should be dropped off either at the Terrace fire hall or McDonalds no later than Sunday, October 14th. One lucky student from Terrace and one from Thornhill will have the honour of being “Fire Chief for a Day” which involves being picked up from school in a fire truck, having breakfast with dignitaries at McDonalds and then having a tour of the Terrace fire hall where they will get the chance to put out a real fire. Carol Heller is a home fire safety specialist with Kidde Canada, recognized as the largest smoke and carbon monoxide alarm company in Canada and a major partner in Fire Prevention Week. Heller says two more factors are important for families to consider to avoid fire tragedy. “If a false alarm has caused you to take the batteries out of your smoke alarm, or remove it from the ceiling, it won’t be there when you need it most,” she says. “So when your kids come home from school excited to create an escape plan, also make sure smoke alarms are installed and working on every story of your home. Remember that smoke alarms wear out. Replace them every 10 years whether they are battery operated or hardwired into your home’s electrical system.”

Although tankers have been safely navigating the north coast and its channels for decades, marine safety remains a top priority for British Columbians. We have been planning the Northern Gateway Project for over a decade, with a particular focus on protecting the environment. We have added specific safety requirements to our marine operations plan to help make the waters of the north coast safer not just for tankers serving the project, but for all marine vessels.

Tankers will reduce speeds in the channels…

Qualified BC Coast Pilots will board and guide all tankers… To prevent spills, all tankers serving the project will be modern and double-hulled, and will be vetted by independent, third party agencies before entering Canadian waters. Once strict safety and environmental standards are met, they will be guided through the Douglas and Principe Channels by qualified BC Coast Pilots.

Tankers travel slowly, but to make sure that marine species and their habitats are respected, tankers will be required to reduce speed as they pass through certain sections of the channels. Even their escort tugboats will have quieter engines to reduce underwater noise.

Powerful tugboats will escort tankers… Additional radar and navigational aids will improve safety for all vessels…

Tugboats have been shown to significantly reduce tanker incidents worldwide. Powerful tugboats that have been specially commissioned for Northern Gateway will assist in the safe arrival and departure of tankers. All tankers will be attended by a close escort tug. In the channels, laden tankers will have two tugs–one tethered at all times. These tugboats will have emergency response equipment on board and will be capable of assisting any marine vessel.

Ad #EN004-09/12E

For increased safety and sure guidance, additional radar systems and navigational aids, such as beacons, buoys and lights, will be installed throughout the routes. This will not only improve safety for tankers, but for all marine traffic on the north coast.

Discover more about our rigorous marine safety plan and join the conversation at marine.northerngateway.ca.

The new Lafarge site is located on the grounds of the former Terrace Lumber Company sawmill. Timber Baron Contracting Ltd. had its log yard at the location until early this summer.

Company sets up shop in Terrace THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - A major player in the global construction materials industry has chosen Terrace for its newest location. Lafarge, a Francebased company with North American manufacturing plants, has been eyeing B.C.’s northwestern region as a hot spot for expansion. The company started leasing land most recently used by local logging company Timber Baron Contracting Ltd. this July on the 4800 Block of Keith Ave. just west of the Sande Overpass. The property backs onto CN’s rail lines running through Terrace, making it a convenient location to transfer material to trucks from rail cars. “Obviously you see all the work and boom that’s happening and so we picked Terrace because it’s a central location,” said Lefarge’s sales manager for B.C.’s coastal district Cory Cannon, noting the company’s been eyeing activity in Kitimat and Prince Rupert. Products like cement and fly ash, both used in the making of concrete, will be shipped up by rail from Lafarge cement facilities in Richmond B.C. or Kamloops and then trucked to various customers in the region, said Cannon. “We’re just starting slow and building our position,” said Cannon. “We’re trying to tap into the growth that’s all through the northwest B.C. area. The hope is that we grow with the area.” Lafarge is keep-

ing mum about who its customers are in the northwest, although Seattle-based operations manager Jonathan Hall said the company has one long-standing customer here it will contin-

ue to serve and is developing other significant business interests. “Depending on where business goes we’re ready to invest more (in the area),” said Hall.

The land is being leased from Garry Roth in the North Coast Industrial Park. It once was the location of the Terrace Lumber Company sawmill and storage area.

Changing the route to respect BC The Gateway pipeline route has already seen a decade of planning and testing, and thousands of hours of work, to ensure maximum safety and minimal environmental disturbance. And I’m proud to tell you that the work isn’t finished yet. First of all, I want to set the record straight on recent claims that the Gateway pipeline runs through the Great Bear Rain Forest on British Columbia’s coast — they are categorically false. As it happens, our team of engineers has taken great pains to ensure that the proposed pipeline route is almost entirely made up of pre-existing corridors of activity — such as logging roads, forestry roads, cut lines, or other “pre-disturbed” areas — to reduce its footprint as much as possible. Our engineers, and experts familiar with B.C.’s terrain, have also spent years using the most advanced technology available to identify the potential for geohazards — landslides, rock fall, avalanches, seismic issues, and marine clays. As a result, we’ve worked hard to minimize the risk, and ensure the safest pipeline route possible, with extra measures such as deeper pipe burial, tunnels, and special pipe design.

Along the entire length of the pipeline in B.C., we’ll minimize impact to sensitive fish and animal habitat, reclaim the right-of-way for wildlife, and strictly control and manage access.

Safety, and respect for the environment, have been our primary considerations in charting the Gateway pipeline route over the past 10 years. And that’s not about to change.

Log on,take off!

Our engineering team is constantly refining the Gateway pipeline route. Years ago we started with Route A, and nearly two dozen route amendments later, we’re working on Route V. Many of those changes have come, and others will come, as a result of working with environmental groups, Aboriginal communities, and government agencies.

School District holds conference examining graduation requirements By Martina Perry THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - The British Columbian Ministry of Education is gathering input from people across the province to develop new graduation requirements that better reflect the skills, competencies and knowledge students in the 21st century need to be successful. School District 52 hosted a community forum on Oct. 4 where to gather input on graduation requirements as well as show a presentation made by the ministry. “There’s been a lot of conversation about how our education system has been very much the same over the last 100 years. But in the last few years there’s been conversation on [the changes we need to make],” Lynn Hauptman, superintendent of S.D. 52 said. There were over 20 people in attendance, consisting of administrative staff, school

board trustees, principals, teachers, parents and members of the community. After the short presentation, people in attendance were asked to split up into groups and answer the following five questions the ministry wants input on: -What do you think are the core or essential things all students should know, understand and be able to do by the time they leave secondary school? -Beyond the core, how could pathways for choice or exploration be provided? -Research is underway with a focus on the following five cross-curricular competencies; communication, critical thinking, creative thinking and innovation, personal responsibly and well being, and social responsibility. How do you think students could demonstrate these competencies? -How could student learning be com-

hIV is a real concern within our communities. You can contract HIV primarily through unprotected sex and by sharing needles. HIV can live in your body for years without you knowing and all the while you can be passing it to others. At least 25 per cent of people who are HIV+ do not know and these 25 per cent are estimated to be responsible for 75 per cent of new infections. Northern Health, in collaboration with its community partners, is working with the Province of BC to prevent the spread of HIV by expanding HIV testing, treatment, and support services to British Columbians.

Young people should learn how to use 9-1-1 service COMMUNITY DAY By Staff Writer

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

VANCOUVER - The mother of a four-yearold child faints. The child is the only other person at home. He calls 9-1-1. Paramedics take the mother to hospital. She recovers and rejoins her family. Such a simple scenario that could have gone so wrong. Brad Mitchell of BC Ambulance Service was the charge dispatcher on duty several months ago when the call described above came in. While the child had called 9-11, he didn’t know his address. “Teaching your child to call 9-1-1 and to know their home address is one of the most important things you can do to help keep you and your loved ones safe at home,” said Mitchell. “Even very young children can learn to call 9-1-1,” said Dr. Michal Fedeles, manager, learning design for BCAS. “Start with the basics when your child is three or four; role-play some simple scenarios with your child – ‘Mom can’t get up from the floor and there’s no one else around’ -- without

actually calling 9-1-1. Revisit the issue every year, as your child becomes more mature and aware of his or her surroundings and abilities.” It’s a good idea to talk to your children about calling 9-1-1 once a year. Fall is a good time because school starts and household routines change. “Children can grasp the concept of an emergency situation – whether someone is unresponsive from a fall or from fainting, if a fire starts or if someone is breaking into your home,” says Fedeles. “Of course, tailor the discussion to your child based on whether they’re preschool age or a teenager.” It’s also a good idea to let a child know the kinds of questions to expect when they call 9-1-1. “Dispatchers will ask where you are calling from, what’s your address, if the person you’re calling about is awake,” said Mitchell. Parents or child care providers should also be sure to stress that the child not hang up on the call. Dispatchers will stay connected with the child until paramedics arrive; they can be a calming influence for

the child as well as provide instructions for caring for the patient. Depending on the situation, they may ask your child to flag down the ambulance or put the family dog away so paramedics can focus on providing care when they arrive. For more information about teaching your children about 9-1-1, visit Factsheet: Tips for Teaching Your Children about 9-1-1. The BC Ambulance Service provides pub-

lic ambulance service throughout BC under the Emergency Health Services Commission. The EHSC has the legislated mandate under the Emergency and Health Services Act to provide BC residents and healthcare professionals with access to prehospital emergency and patient transfer services. The EHSC is a division of the Provincial Health Services Authority, which manages specialized health care services.

Happy Thoughts

Pay it Forward the call of duty!

On September 28 my mom’s smoke alarm started to beep. She is 84 years old, and we were out of town. After two hours she could not take it any more. She phoned the fire department and explained what was happening and they said they were more than happy to come check it out for her. When they arrived they discovered it wasn’t her smoke alarm but her microwave beeping because it’s broken! Jeff Zoerb said to my mom “I have got extra microwaves at home, let me go get you one.” Not only did she receive a new smoke alarm, she also got a new microwave! They also made sure she was okay before they left.

Inside Port to donate dollars for home ice goals By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - The Prince Rupert Rampage have a new title sponsor as the season gets underway. The Prince Rupert Port Authority announced on October 4 that it would be the lead sponsor for the team during the 2012/2013 season, which got underway last weekend with a road trip to Kitimat to face the Ice Demons. “We’ve seen the impact the Rampage players and supporting staff have made on the community of Prince Rupert through both their games and extracurricular involvement, and we are excited to have the opportunity to support their actions on and off the ice as the title sponsor,” said Ken Veldman, director of public affairs at the Prince Rupert Port Authority. “Given the Port Authority’s role in promoting a strong community through business and recreational development, we are confident that by building a strong, collaborative partnership with the Prince Ru-

pert Rampage we are investing in the sustainable growth of our city and region.” As well as being the title sponsor, the port has given players even more motivation to find the back of the net while playing in front of their faithful fans at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre Arena. For every goal scored by the team at home, the Port Authority will donate $100 to the Prince Rupert Salvation Army, which served 48,000 meals to people in need in the community in 2011. “I know I speak for everyone involved with the Prince Rupert Rampage when I say we are very fortunate to have the support of the Port of Prince Rupert and all our other team sponsors that have made the past four seasons possible and very successful,” said Ron German, President and Manager of the Prince Rupert Rampage. “We look forward to working alongside the Port of Prince Rupert to strengthen the franchise and explore exciting new ways to further promote our growing community.”

Fall run goes the distance By Anna Killen

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

BIRGITTE BARTLETT / THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

Future marathon star, five-year-old Ottis Brockstra, knows its best to start training at a young age. He finished the 5k run in just over 40 minutes – nothing to scoff at, that’s for sure.

TERRACE - Just over 150 people from all over the northwest participated in the 32nd annual All Seasons Fall Run held Sept. 30 in Terrace. Athletes of all ages competed in 5k, 10k, and 21k marathon races in damp weather. Participant home communities included Prince Rupert, Port Edward, New Aiyansh, Terrace, Kitimat, Hazelton, South Hazelton, New Hazelton and Houston. The races started and ended at the college, with routes that winded around the bench and through the horseshoe. “We had a great day,” said organizer Jack Worobey, noting that there were about 18 volunteers who helped the day run smoothly. This year’s awards were presented at the college longhouse – a roomier space for the popular event. “The longhouse was just great for doing the awards,” Worobey said. “[It’s a} great facility.” In the marathon race, Mike Christensen once again came first overall with a time of 1:26:48. But Dwayne Felewich was close behind him with a time of 1:28:54 for second overall and a first-place fin-

ish for the male 20 - 39 category. “Dwayne just kept sticking with me at the beginning so I kept pushing the pace harder and harder.” said Christensen, noting that he’d initially planned to run easy as he was fighting a cold. “He was a tough competitor and just would not give in.” “I suffered badly on Lanfear hill but managed to pull it together for the home stretch and get my best time since I was in my twenties,” he said. Christensen’s son Thomas came fourth overall in the 5k race. He said he noticed a number of other father/son participants “with some great performances from the young men – Travis & Aiden Carter, Curtis and Gavin Bretherick. “Watch those names for the future.” Nicole Calame came first in the marathon female 20 - 39 category with a time of 1:38:46. In the half-marathon, Jacob Haas placed first overall with a time of 37:30, with 15-yearold Luke Whitaker in second with 41:05. In the 5k, 17-yearold Regan Yee of South Hazelton placed first overall with her time of 18:42.

International dressage coach hosts northwest clinic By Submitted

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - International dressage and eventing coach Joni Lynn Peters held a 3 day clinic earlier this month. Hosted and sponsored by Aurora Farm, home to the Northern Warmbloods Stud, Peters gave individual dressage coaching to 11 riders of all ages and abilities. Peters is a Certified Level III Event and Dressage Coach with International competition success in both disciplines. She has been Long and Short Listed with the Canadian Event Team and the Canadian

Dressage Team. Her talented horse, Travolta, is home trained by Peters and this year they made the top 5 in the Dressage Canada rider listing. Their dressage accomplishments include provincial and national titles. They represented Canada

in Australia’s Trivett Classic in 1998 helping earn a Team second placing and in January 2012 they represented Canada in Florida at the Wellington Classic Dressage Challenge; placing second in the Grand Prix and first in the FEI Open. The clinic was fully booked shortly after it was an-

nounced that Peters was making the trip from her home in Armstrong B.C. Peters taught 11 sessions a day, each session on a ‘one to one’ basis and lasting 45 minutes. The viewing area at the new indoor arena at Aurora Farm was also busy with spec-

tators who enjoyed seeing some talented horse and rider combinations from our area. “ As a trainer, breeder and competitive dressage rider living in northern B.C., I cannot express my gratitude for a instructor of this calibre coming to our area to coach us. Joni gave us 100 per cent of

her time and knowledge, for which we were all more then ready to listen and learn from her,” said Sherry Kirsch from Smithers. Peters hopes to return to Terrace in April 2013 to give more training sessions. Interested riders should contact Natasha at no@telus.net

Ice back in Rupert after temporary fix By Marina Perry

The Northern connector

PRINCE RUPERT Prince Rupert winter sports teams were practicing on ice at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre on Wednesday, Oct. 3 after a quick fix to the broken ice maker has proven to be a success. The City’s recreation department discovered an issue with the chiller in July while preparing for the arena start-up, which is typically in the second or third week of August. The chiller was over 20 years old and experienced a mechanical failure. Ice chillers have brine that goes through pipes, and those pipes are surrounded by ammonia. Some of the pipes had rusted and were allowing ammonia to seep into the brine. Repairs on the chiller began a couple weeks ago, and after considerable testing and re-testing the patch job worked out. The chiller will be regularly tested for ammonia-in-brine levels, as there is a chance the patch won’t hold. “It’s still, essentially, a broken chiller and it is going to be replaced,” said Rudy Kelly, Director of Recreation and Community Services. “This patch job may only last a few weeks or it could survive the season – we don’t know. Current indicators are positive though and we may be able to hold off on replacing the unit un-

til the spring.” Terry Armstrong from Ocean Fish suggested a solution for the broken machine, with contractor Kevin Brown from Coastal Refrigeration performing the repair. Brown plugged the leaking pipes and the chiller is currently operating on fewer pipes. The Prince Rupert Minor Hockey Association and City of Prince Rupert are currently working out the bill, and in the mean time local winter sports groups are happy to be back on the ice. “The Prince Rupert Minor Hockey executive and the players are very excited to have the ice up and running,” Pam Meers, public relations for minor hockey, said mentioning that the group is still accepting new registrations for the 2012/2013 season. Sheri Pringle, head coach of the Prince Rupert Skating Club, is equally as thrilled about the repair. “It’s fabulous to have ice back. The fact that people have come through and got it together is great,” Pringle said, adding the repair came right in time as three skaters, Mikayla Rose, Mickaela Ward and Cassidy Campbell, are scheduled to travel to Prince George to attend a high-performance seminar on the weekend. “Even to have two days on the ice before they go is absolutely amazing.”

And Prince Rupert’s Central Interior Hockey League team the Rampage is also thankful they had a couple of days to practice before their first game of the season on Oct. 6. Ron German, president of the Prince Rupert Rampage, said that

it’s great that the team can practice on-ice again. The Rampage had their first practice in Prince Rupert on Thursday, Oct. 4, right before their first game of the season against the Kitimat Ice Demons. The new chiller is

expected to arrive on Oct. 26, and will cost approximately $120,000 before taxes. Kelly says that as long as testing remains positive the City may wait until the end of the season to install the new chiller, unless the old one breaks down again.

Members of the midget rep team practice on the evening of Oct. 5, shortly after the ice was put into the arena.
