Robust picture painted for Alberta’s future by Treena Mielke Black Press
A senior economist with ATB painted a fairly bright financial picture for Alberta to a crowd of about 100 people attending a presentation in Sylvan Lake, last Thursday. “Alberta is all about oil and crude oil prices are pretty solid right now,” said Todd Hirsch, in his presentation sponsored by Sylvan Lake Chamber of Commerce and the local ATB branch. “Albertans are spending a lot and feeling very confident. They are secure in their jobs. Retail is robust and the population is growing.” Hirsch said Albertans have a right to feel confident because they are situated well in Western Canada.
Alberta is all about oil, he noted, adding tension in the Middle East has moved prices up. “The Middle East is a big supply for crude oil.” While oil prices are not expected to fall, they are volatile. “I would like to say oil prices would never tumble, but they could,” he added. “One thing I know for sure, oil could be between zero and a million dollars a barrel,” he joked. “(It could become a) touch softer than it is now, but we will continue to see investment in oil sands and conventional drilling.” The agriculture picture is looking brighter than it has in the past, he added. “Things are looking a little brighter
for agriculture. Prices are rising.” He attributed the higher prices to a higher standard of living in China and India. “They want more food and better quality of food,” he said. “Western Canada is situated well to take advantage of that.” On the livestock front, Hirsch suggested the e coli situation is not a real cause for alarm economically. “I don’t think there will be a real economic fallout because of e coli. At this point it is not a reason for concern.” Mortgage rates in Canada should remain constant in 2013, he said. “There is not a whiff of inflation in the Canadian economy. I can’t see much movement in mortgage rates for 12 to 15 months,” he said.
The U.S. economy is only okay, he noted. “The best you can say for the U.S. economy is they are treading water. It is not operating where it should.” The employment picture in the U.S. doesn’t seem to be particularly bright, he said. “Jobs are not coming back to the U.S. and discouraged workers are dropping out of the work force.” While Hirsch emphasized that locally, the economy is strong and stable, he said global economy might feel like a mess, and the traditional tools of monetary policy don’t appear to be working. Hirsch compared the global economy to eating in a restaurant where there were no utensils and no accommodating waiters or waitresses. He said compromise and co-opera-

tion among the chefs of global economy is the only way to prevent a major economic downturn. Carlo Simonot, past president of Sylvan Lake Chamber of Commerce said Hirsch’s presentation was informative and interesting. “We were fortunate to have a high level economist speak to us and it was nice to hear facts that weren’t all gloom and doom. It was nice to hear his opinions on local and global economy from someone with their feet on the ground; someone who is here in Alberta versus someone from Toronto. Simonot said after listening to Hirsch he sees Alberta in a positive, economic cycle and the rest of Canada sitting on a nice, steady incline. kcs Association turns 35, celebrated new name and image by Aleisha Bosch Sylvan Lake News
With excited children, face painting, and cake, the kcs Association celebrated its 35th birthday, along with a new accessible playground and image, Sept. 28 at Sylvan Lake Family and Community Centre. The association, formerly known as Sylvan Lake Kinder-Care, started in 1978, said executive director Ann Faulk. At the time, it was one of the first early childhood care providers in the province. Winter coats program underway again; last year 350 used service by Treena Mielke Black Press
A local non-profit group is doing its part this year to ensure everyone, no matter what age, will have a warm winter coat to wear when the cold weather hits. Sylvan Lake Community Partners’ Association’s ‘Coats For Kids and Families’ program is now underway. Office manager Jennifer Lemega said the public is urged to bring winter coats to Sylvan Lake & Area Community Partners’ Association located at 4936 50th Avenue or drop them off at Crystal Clean Laundromat in Lakeland Plaza. Owner Neil McLeod said he has been collecting coats at that location for a few years. He added volunteers come in to ensure the coats are clean and in good condition so they can be passed on to others. “With the beautiful fall weather we’ve been having, people aren’t thinking about winter coats, but they need to,” he said. “Some people out there don’t have coats.” Lemega said the Coats for Kids program includes coats for
adults, as well. Touques, mitts, boots and scarves are also available. Last year, more than 350 adult and children’s coats were given out through the Coats for Kids program. Sylvan Lake Community Partners’ Association (SLCPA) is a registered non-profit charity operated by a volunteer board of directors and three employed staff. As well as Coats for Kids, the organization oversees many other projects and programs including the compassion fund, the Community Christmas Dinner, the Heroes School Project, Arts Around the Lake and Gallery and the Women’s Wellness Retreat. Monthly coffee sharing time, Sylvan Family Matters, the community emergency fund and
the 1913 Days compassion garage sale event are also run under the auspices of Sylvan Lake Community Partners’ Association. The board, staff and volunteers also participate in various fundraisers to raise money for SLCPA affiliated programs and projects.
who are also hoping to work to support the Coats for Kids program. Secretary is Chais Avery and treasurer is Hailey Declercke. Photographers are Jessica Beckwith and Hannah Edgecombe and PR reps are Ann Duffy and Annika Vetter. Remaining members will chair the events and programs that are closest to their hearts. These are Makenna McLean, Kaden deFrece, Amber Carson, Bobbi Cerin,
who have been chosen to attend. Our first project will be promoting and collecting Christmas shoeboxes. Our goal is to collect at least 50 shoeboxes by Nov. 14th. Boxes and instructions are available in Room 103, but students may use any shoebox that they choose and packing instructions can be found online through Samaritan’s Purse (www.samaritanspurse. ca/operation-christmas-child). Interacters are also hoping to get involved with Coats for Kids and current Rotary projects. Throughout the year, students would like to connect with elderly in our community, help out with Habitat for Humanity in Red Deer,
help kids as the need presents itself, support the Cancer Society, the Ronald McDonald House, and Free the Children (sponsors of We Day). Our lofty ambition would be to organize a hot air balloon fundraiser in the spring and we would love any direction that people can give us towards accomplishing this. We are still welcoming new members, so please encourage H. J. Cody students to come out and get involved. Our next meeting is Oct. 15th at lunch in Room 103. Please email Alana Routhier at arouthier@chinooksedge.ab.ca if you have any suggestions or would like to get involved.

The Chinese state company CNOOC’s $15-billion bid for Nexen, a major Canadian oil and gas company, raises major issues about the future of Canada’s economy. Whether or not the government approves the bid — it is currently being reviewed under the Investment Canada Act — there are many questions that should be asked about the deal, including: Should the government allow our resources to be owned by whoever pays the highest price to shareholders of a Canadian company? By extension, do we want stock markets to decide how best to protect Canadian interests? The issues become especially important because the Harper government has put most of Canada’s economic eggs in the resource sector instead of manufactured exports. Some commentators have maintained that the criteria for review — whether it is deemed a ‘net benefit’ to Canada — are too vague, but by using a broad test the government does retain flexibility when seeking conditions for a takeover or blocking it outright. Under this laissez-faire approach, favoured by the government, Canada should be wide open to foreign investment. We should not care about countryof-origin or about whether the buyer is state-owned or private. Let the bidding begin, all offers welcome. Maximize the benefits for shareholders. But do we want to ensure that our resources are exploited according to Canadian priorities? And do we expect governments to play a role? If so, the government needs to ensure a minimum threshold of Canadian ownership in key sectors. With ownership comes control; with Canadian ownership comes a range of options to ensure Canadian interests are protected.

The CNOOC bid poses a conundrum owned firms. In contrast, the Harper government has thrown open the doors to foreign takeovers and foreign influence. All sorts of foreign takeovers (including, we can assume, by Chinese companies) are no longer subject to the usual review process under the Investment Canada Act because the Harper government raised dramatically the threshold for review of proposed takeovers. It ceded its powers to review bids for any Canadian company worth less than $1 billion. As a result, many foreign takeovers of Canadian firms fly under the radar of the government and the public. The economic ramifications will emerge gradually and be very difficult to reverse. Reviews under the Investment Canada Act are limited in other ways. For example, they apply only to takeovers of existing Canadian companies. Foreign investment in new businesses — so-called greenfield investment, which Canadians support and prefer in opinion polls — are not subject to review. Second, the Prime Minister recently raised the stakes of Chinese ownership in Canada. By inking an investment deal with China last month, his government laid a footing for Chinese companies to sue Canada for any law or regulation that
for the government. Its laissez-faire approach, and its allegiances to shareholders in the oil patch, are pitted squarely against the risks of putting Canada’s economic future in foreign hands. Undoubtedly, the takeover would enrich Nexen’s shareholders. But is it good for Canada? Most importantly, are all of these foreign takeovers eroding our ability to ensure that Canada’s resources are exploited based on Canadian priorities? It is not protectionist to ask this question. Cold weather an important part of yearly routine COLUMN Snow. Cold. Winter. All are words many Canadians dislike hearing and a season they dread even more. I’m not fond of winter. I don’t like chattering teeth, stiff fingers and messy roads. I don’t enjoy piling on layers of clothing, hat hair, and a runny nose. More than anything, I really can’t stand wading through deep snow, tripping, and ending up with chunks of it on my face and inside my coat. I’m a summer person. I was born in July, and many of my favourite memories took place in the time between school years. I used to think I wanted to live somewhere it was summer all year round.
I left for Argentina in March 2011. March, as any Albertan knows, is the worst month of the year. It’s a month that should be warmer but isn’t, and a month when flowers should be emerging, but are instead covered by a thick blanket of stubborn snow. It was during a March like this that I hopped on a plane for the long flight to Buenos Aires. I was looking forward to exchanging it for a subtropical climate. Argentina is on the other side of the equator, and their seasons are the opposite of ours. I arrived near the end of their summer. Temperatures hung around the high 20’s, magnified several times by the surrounding buildings and number of people on the streets.
Aleisha Bosch Sylvan Lake News
Mar del Plata, the seaside city where I lived, was much cooler. The city’s wide beaches were packed every day with people tempted by the breeze off the water. As summer left, so did the crowds. The waves crashed onto empty beaches, and many businesses closed up. The weather, in my opinion, was still warm. I didn’t wear a jacket very often. Many locals didn’t seem to think the weather was still warm. Throughout fall and into winter (with a daily high around 10˚C), they wore
jackets, gloves, and hats. I saw runners with a scarf pulled across their nose and mouth. They stared at my light jacket. I celebrated my birthday in winter for the first time. If I were home, it would have seemed a particularly cold and rainy July day, uncommon but not unheard of. As I realized my birthday was not a cold summer day, but actually in the middle of winter, I thought that Mar del Plata residents don’t get to experience winter the way I do in Canada. They don’t get to sit by a fire, wood or gas, as fat, fluffy snowflakes fall outside. They don’t get to go tobogganing as children down a snowy slope. They don’t get to go skating on a frozen lake.
The cherished Canadian ideal of a “white Christmas” doesn’t exist there. They go to the beach on Christmas Day. While I think winter is a tad overeager in Canada, with snow falling in October every year without fail, it’s difficult for me to imagine a year without it. While I grumble about the cold, the coats, and the snow, it’s as much a part of my yearly routine as a too-short summer. I will not welcome the snow until November. I will hold onto my fall jacket as long as the leaves cling onto the trees. However, winter and cooler temperatures are an important part of the year, and not just because they help us appreciate the warmth of summer.

Lighthouse condition excellent, could easily be moved: writer Dear Editor, For the price of an ice house and an outhouse you can have a lighthouse. I am appalled that council did not protect the icon of Sylvan Lake — the lighthouse. I guess in all the excitement of lavishly handing out relaxations to the developer for the expropriation of the lake view and the mayor doing the just approve it dance, no council or planners thought the lighthouse was worth preserving. The intent of this letter is to disprove the malignant hyperbole that seems to be coming from
the town. I recently had access to the interior of the lighthouse and I will assure you that the lighthouse is in excellent condition. It is constructed of a robust wood — fir — and it shows no signs of structural compromise. It had minor damage five years ago (a fire) that singed the base of the plywood and smoke stained the exterior but that was easily repaired. This council seems to be hell bent on destroying the icon, and bending over to facilitate that. It seems that nobody on council wants to extend the effort or propose pre-
serving it. This is a council that spent $100,000 to build a 5x10 washroom in the park. (It’s actually more of an outhouse because it does not have sinks to wash in, and is not connected to the town’s sewer system. They spent $20,000 on an ice house that melted in six days. I have looked at a plan to move the lighthouse to the pier. It could be done for the same price as the outhouse and the ice house combined. $120,000-$150,000 — far cheaper than the Samson mansions on the lakeshore at one million each. I would like to see tour-

ism focus more towards the downtown area and the failing restaurant district. It’s unfortunate that every measure has been made to destroy the structure and few made to preserve it, but I would like to thank the builder that generously constructed the lighthouse out of his own money as a gift of memories to the people of the town. It was a better time, unfortunately the new owner does not seem to share that vision of the people. Thank you for the fine town and the great memories. I also see that the walkway between the
blue hotel and the lake has been redefined from being a public walkway as was in the original
approval to being a private patio as approved by council. Things are definitely changing in regards
to who can enjoy the lake. Lyle Dressler, Sylvan Lake
Kudos on fishing hut program award Dear Editor, I was thrilled to see in the Oct. 4th issue of Sylvan Lake News the municipal sustainability award given to the Sylvan Lake Management Committee from the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association in recognition of the Take It Off — Respect Sylvan Lake program. This program was established to cut down on the number of ice fishing huts abandoned on our lake at the end of the winter ice fishing season. The AUMA also passed a resolution that the province implement a man-
datory hut registration program. As many readers will recall, this issue of abandoning huts has long been a “thorn in my side”, and it was with a great amount of relief and happiness that finally now the province may enforce mandatory hut registration to keep our lake one of the cleanest in the province outside of the mountain parks. Kudos to Mayor Susan Samson and all the committee on a job well done! Bill Hollingshead, Jarvis Bay

Pedestrians have the right-of-way Dear Editor, I wish to share my recent experiences of dangerous driving at marked crosswalks in Sylvan Lake. Three times this month, in Sylvan Lake, I’ve stopped for a pedestrian at a marked crosswalk, only to have the driver behind me change into the right lane with no intention of stopping. Twice, the
pedestrian was aware enough to not begin crossing the street or stop where they were in the intersection to wait for the vehicle to speed through. The third and most recent incident, however, was even scarier. I was driving to work on Monday, October 1st, heading east on 47 Avenue. I stopped at 52 Street for a kid waiting
to cross at a marked crosswalk. As the kid began to enter the crosswalk, in my rearview mirror, I noticed a Chrysler 300 which did not look like it was going to stop. At first I thought it was going to rear-end my vehicle, but instead, the driver veered to the right lane to pass me where he was likely to hit this kid who continued to cross.
In the end, the Chrysler stopped just in time, right before the crosswalk, then immediately sped up and drove away. This incident happened at 8:05 a.m. on a Monday when Sylvan is full of school-aged children heading to school. We’ve all caught ourselves doing dumb things while driving,
We have urgent care now Dear Editor, When I lived in Edmonton I was 50 blocks from the hospital and it took me 30 minutes to get there. Sylvan Lake is served
by an ambulance service that can respond in three minutes and is equipped with life saving equipment. I have critical care service already.
MLA has offered support to Urgent Care Committee by Kerry Towle, MLA Special to Sylvan Lake News
The issue of urgent care in Sylvan Lake needs to be addressed with the same sense of urgency that its name suggests. I have suggested in a letter to Health Minister Fred Horne some time ago, that residents of Sylvan Lake and area want and need an Urgent Care Centre to meet the medical needs of a population that is quickly expanding and that requires additional attention during the summer tourist-driven months. The Urgent Care Committee has worked very hard to create a business case for urgent care in Sylvan Lake. Many dedicated and hard-working individuals have given their time and expertise to create a fiscally responsible plan that would assist the town and surrounding communities. I have spoken to physicians, stakeholders and residents in the area and have offered to meet with the Urgent
Care Committee chaired by Mayor Susan Samson. As the Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Innisfail-Sylvan Lake constituency, I have offered my support to the committee so this issue may go forward to the minister in the next month or in the fall session which begins Oct. 23. Continued on page 10
If the town required a full time 24 hour clinic the financial opportunity gap would be filled and a customer driven 24 hour clinic would be a reality. I respect the people that actually know the facts in regards to requirements and services available to make the decisions. That being Alberta Health. A monster town hall, speed bumps and the disaster of the handling of the lakeshore plans indicates the planning capacity of the present and past councils. The town is well serviced by the existing ambulance that can respond and have you in a hospital in 15 minutes, air ambulance,
and about 20 doctors who live and practice in town. I recently fell off a ladder and was driven to Red Deer Hospital, emergency, was seen immediately, x-rayed, and treated. Bam — it was done. Yes, it’s great for politics to create an enemy out of Alberta Health, but the reality is here now. World class, great service 15 minutes away. We have urgent care now and we have existing financial planning and credibility at the provincial level. I would like to see that level of financial responsibility and planning adopted by the town. Karate Kids once again helped kids in Nepal by Christine Braun Special to Sylvan Lake News
Adventure
- A group of elementary students from Lighthouse Christian Academy enjoyed various fun activities at the Jungle Farm, near Innisfail Sept. 14. They learned about seasons and harvest, enjoyed a wagon ride, navigated through a bale maze as well as a corn maze, raced down a huge tunnel slide on Strawberry Mountain and fed farm animals. The autumn adventure culminated with each child getting to picking a pumpkin. SUBMITTED
Martial arts students from Central Alberta Martial Arts & Wellness Centre collected close to 80 pairs of sunglasses to send to the children in Nepal to help in the mission to create good eye care. Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world and good eye care is very scarce. As a result, many Nepali children suffer from cataracts — a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which can lead to blindness. Wearing sunglasses is just one simple step to preventing this disease. A few years ago, martial art students

The $905,000 project was valued the highest of 21 development permits issued during the month which saw a total of $2,379,605 in construction value begun. Two other permits were issued for commercial activity - one for installation of steel service doors at Walmart ($76,750) and the

- Most of the summer, if not all, we do not venture down to the lake at all, wrote Barb Rutledge a resident of Sylvan Lake for the past 10 years or so. “I’ve done my best to avoid Lakeshore Drive because of the traffic and tourists. I pulled my camera out and went for a drive with the intention of ‘seeing’ Sylvan Lake with fresh eyes through the lens of my camera. I was pleasantly surprised at what I gained from the experience. People were enjoying the outdoors by walking, biking and some brave souls were swimming. The autumn colours took my breath away … I have a renewed appreciation for this town and all the activities that are available for our enjoyment.” She added she came across a walking path “that I discovered only when I took the time to really ‘see’.” These pictures are a sample of some of the discoveries she made. other for a 26 seat take-out and retail restaurant in Varsity Mall ($80,000). There were also two permits issued for work in the industrial sector of town. An addition and change in use permit was issued to Urban Dirtworks Inc. valued at $135,000 for a Schenk Industrial Road location. Buylo Homes Ltd. received a permit for work valued at $160,320 to construct office space at a Beju Industrial Drive location. Four permits were issued for new single family homes — two for construction in Ryders Ridge and two for construction in Beacon
Hill subdivision. Construction of new single family homes remains behind last year’s pace with 68 started in the first nine months of this year compared to 83 in the same period last year. The other permits issued were for basement development (4), decks and additions (3), detached garages (2), demolitions (2) and a shed. September’s total brought the 2012 year-to-date total for construction to $43.14 million which was significantly more than the 2011 year-to-date total of $26 million.
Sylvan Meadows students busy exploring, learning by Carol von Gunten Special to Sylvan Lake News
Students at Sylvan Meadows Adventist School have been busy since starting Aug. 28th. On Sept. 6th they took a field trip to the Lacombe Corn Maze. Favourite activities at the corn maze besides the maze for all the students were the bouncy balloon and the horse carousel. We had an amazing day. The ice cream is incredible!! Our second excursion, headed by Kevin Keirs was a canoe trip (water testing activities included) from Fort Normandeau to the Joffre bridge with the Grade 7-8 students and teachers from five small Adventist schools —
Grade 7 and 8 students from Sylvan Meadows Adventist School and four other area Adventist schools undertook a canoe trip from Fort Normandeau to Joffre bridge on Sept. 10-11, despite rainy, windy and cold conditions. Sylvan Meadows (Sylvan Lake), Woodlands (Ponoka), PACeS (online
long distance school), Southside Christian (Red Deer), and CHCS
(Lacombe). It was truly a test of survival since the weather Sept. 10-11 was not only rainy, windy and extremely cold, but we often had to hop out to pull ourselves off rocks and pull canoes up along the shoreline now and again to regroup. Wet clothes and cold weather and water spelled endurance. Paddling against that wind took an extra few hours. Paddling from Ft. Normandeau to our camp for the night took about eight hours. The kids were all troopers!

Experts share secrets for managing a profitable, fast-growing business eight years from three guys working in a frigid apartment to one of the hottest developers of games for media giants such as Warner, Electronic Arts, Build-A-Bear Workshop and Nickelodeon? Such a meteoric rise may sound like a dream come true, but for the unprepared, it can be the end of a business. “We were able to successfully manage growth, and that’s where many small companies fail,” said Steve Couture, the entrepreneurial force behind the magic of Frima
Submitted Special to Sylvan Lake News
Growing a small business comes with both opportunities and challenges. The chance to become an industry leader is attractive, but it comes with the risk that demand will outstrip capacity. To avoid that pitfall, you need a strategic plan that’s backed by adequate financing, empowered employees, and the right information and communications technology. How does a company go in just
Studio. “It came down to having the right balance and a passion for three things: a creative artistic style, a solid technology base and good management.” A 2010 survey by the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) found that 78 per cent of entrepreneurs believe it’s important to grow their business and nearly half are targeting revenue increases of 10 per cent or more. But fast growth is a doublededged sword. The opportunity to expand and make more money will
be lost if demand outstrips capacity, leading to disgruntled employees, strained client relationships, and shoddy products or services. That’s why it’s vital for small companies to step back from the daily grind and ensure their fundamentals are in order. “Fast growth can kill your company if it’s not well managed,” said Patrice Bernard, Senior Vice President, Financing and Consulting, at BDC. “You have to define your growth objectives, and then decide how much growth you can support
and how much financing you need to support that growth.” The first step, he advises, is a well-thought-out growth strategy that identifies the human resources, processes, tools and information systems you need to meet targets. Expect to introduce new information and communications technology to improve your sales, productivity and financial controls. You should also anticipate expanding facilities, adding machinery or hiring new talent.

Thursday, October 11, 2012 SYLVAN LAKE NEWS Continued from page 14 One of Frima’s biggest challenges was attracting and retaining skilled people in an industry that is home to multinational competitors with much deeper pockets. Frima found its niche by creating a positive work environment for all of its 300 employees. “We offer flexible work schedules, fresh fruit every day, massages, free bus passes and car sharing, said Couture, a recent BDC Young Entrepreneur Award winner. “We also award points based on performance, which can be exchanged for services like grass cutting, changing your winter tires, tax preparation or even babysitting.
Managing growth also depends on having the right information systems in place. Year after year, Canada’s Best Managed Companies (chosen through an annual program sponsored by Deloitte) cite investments in information and communications technologies as critical to driving growth. “The lowest-risk growth strategy is one based on facts, not on hunches or conjecture, said Peter Brown, Managing Partner for Private Company Services at Deloitte. “Often, the best fact sources are inside your company’s database. You may have to invest to improve these systems, but the payback is increased
productivity and knowledge that will help your business succeed. Knowing when to make these investments is critical. For example, Frima contracted out its financing to save on costs until it needed a fulltime chief financial officer. “You will know it’s time to hire middle management or build a new plant once you’ve reached and exceeded your capacity to deliver, said Bernard. “But don’t start ramping up until you firmly believe the cash will come in. Once you have contracts to deliver, you can probably find a lender to finance it up front for you. A successful growth strategy

depends on a flexible management structure that allows your business to respond quickly to market demands. The last thing you want, said Couture, is for layers of bureaucracy to stifle your agility. Frima’s structure enables people to pare off into smaller groups that can focus on different market platforms, such as mobile or massively multiplayer online games. From its humble beginnings, Frima has become one of Canada’s top independent video game developers, with products for Hollywood’s biggest brands, including Harry Potter and SpongeBob SquarePants, as well as games of its own. FOR GROWING A SMALL BUSINESS...
DO’S & S T ’ N O D
You’ve decided you want to expand your small business — but aren’t sure how. Here are some growth do’s and don’ts. LEVERAGE EXISTING CLIENTS Looking for growth opportunities? Don’t forget your existing clients. They could be your best path to expansion success. It’s usually much easier to find new business from current clients than to start afresh with untested ones. “Listen to existing clients, and see what they need,” said
Patrick Latour, Senior Vice President, Financing and Consulting at the Business Development Bank of Canada. “Ask them how you can help them be even better. Can you help them in ways they don’t know about?” Latour also advises growth-oriented entrepreneurs to seek out opportunities to join the supply chains of multinational corporations. GROW SMART Whatever you focus on as a growth opportunity, be sure it’s

the right path for you and your business, said Paul Cubbon, who teaches entrepreneurship at the University of British Columbia’s Sauder School of Business. Don’t expand into new business areas just because you can. “People think growth will bring a more profitable situation. But they may grow from one to 20 employees and not make any more money, while working twice as hard,” Cubbon said. “It’s not just about growth. It’s about smart growth.” Be sure new business

Make your advertising work for you Every business needs advertising. Following a few basic rules will help you develop an effective message, choose the right medium and get the most out of your plan. The first step is to set your objective. Are you trying to introduce a new product, for example, or counter claims from your competition? Or is your aim to announce a special promotion or price? Next, define your target audience — the type of people you want to purchase your product or services.
Finally, identify the key benefit your business offers — the reason customers would want to buy from you: quality, service, price or some other motivator. Every type of advertising vehicle offers pros and cons. In deciding which one best suits your goals, first assess your audience. What age group do your potential customers fall into? Are they male or female? What are their preoccupations and personal habits? Where are they most likely to see your ad? In what context are they most likely to
respond to it? Where, when and how often is the ad circulated and seen? In what language is it published? Answering the questions above will help you to select the advertising medium best suited to your needs and budget. Remember, if your ads are amateurish, badly produced or appearing in the wrong places at the wrong time, your product will be diminished. The pointers listed below are valid for advertising in just about any medium.
• Keep it simple; advertising is often misunderstood, and you want to avoid this • Put your key message in the headline and avoid burying it • Colour advertising is often more effective than black and white • Use only high-quality photography and visuals • Illustrate your print ads with photographs rather than drawings • The larger the ad, the bigger the impact • The more frequent the ad, the more effective it is
• Ads on page one or inside covers generally reach more people • The most effective ads typically show the product being used in someone’s hands • Use testimonials to build credibility • Highlight the benefits of your product rather than its features, and avoid criticizing your competitors • Being concise is important, but make sure people get the information they need to make a purchasing decision

Understanding customers your top job The purpose of a business is to create and keep a customer, Harvard Business School professor Theodore Levitt famously observed. That makes understanding your customers the number one job of any business, said Business Development Bank of Canada consultant Richard Toker. “You can’t get customers and retain them if you don’t understand who they are and what makes them tick,” said Toker, a marketing specialist in Toronto. “The more time you spend thinking about this, the
easier all your tactical marketing decisions become.” He pointed to a number of areas where you should strive to learn more about your customers through research, tracking and observation. This knowledge, in turn, will allow you to better focus your offerings as well as your marketing and sales efforts. Try to paint a picture of your typical customer. Geography — Where are your customers? The old adage that birds of a feather flock together applies to customers. When you know where
they’re located, you can target your marketing more effectively and seek out new customers in the same area. Demographics — Who are they? Are they mostly male or female? How old are they? How much education do they have? How much do they earn? Psychographics — Seek to understand their “soft” characteristics: their values, attitudes, interests and lifestyle choices. Transactional — How do they like to do business with you? If

you’re a retailer, are your clients principally online shoppers or do they want face-to-face service. How much do they spend? What kind of products do they buy? Toker said it’s important to keep in mind the 80/20 rule when it comes to customers. It may not be exactly in that proportion, but a large majority of your sales will come from a small minority of your customers. Therefore, it’s important to identify your top customers; nurture their trust and loyalty with great
service; and encourage them to buy even more from you through personalized communications, special offers and discounts. “You want to ensure you are not treating all your customers as equal because all customers are not equal,” Toker said. Larger businesses can drill down even further, segmenting their customer list by different criteria such as spending history, product preferences and responsiveness to offers. They can then tailor marketing tactics Continued on page 19

By the same token, understanding customers helps your business to stand out from competitors by offering them what they want and need. It also helps you to innovate by creating new offerings based on what they desire. “It allows you to develop products that are based on user needs and feelings rather than just the next thing you can come up with,” Toker said. For market research,
you can use secondary sources such as reports, surveys and publications covering your region and industry. There is a wealth of information available from government sources such as Statistics Canada, Canada Business Service Centres and provincial and local agencies. You can also conduct your own research (or hire a marketing research firm to do it on your behalf). This could include conducting interviews, focus groups or surveys.

For analysis of your client list, entrepreneurs should consider investing in a client relationship management system (CRM). CRM provides businesses with centralized access to information on existing and prospective clients. Among other benefits, it can be used to identify top customers, segment your customer list and personalize your service and marketing initiatives.

Ahoy, pirate invited to storm library by Heather Parker Special to Sylvan Lake News
It’s the time of year for young swashbucklers to polish up their hooks, strap on their peg legs and start practicing their “Aarrrs”. Pirates will be swaggering around the poop decks on Saturday, Oct. 13th when Sylvan Lake Municipal Library celebrates “Pirate Day”. Beware the “walking of the plank”
and find the X that marks the treasure spot. All pirates are invited to join the librarian mateys for some high adventure. Come in costume and use your best pirate talk. There will be pirate activities, crafts and games for all ages, as well as grog and hardtack, from 1-2 pm. This is a free event but does require registration as it has limited enrollment. Tai Chi for Peace celebrated by Christine Braun Special to Sylvan Lake News

Sylvan Lake celebrated peace through the practice of Tai Chi at the pier on Sept. 30. This free event was offered by Central Alberta Martial Arts & Wellness Centre and was available to all children, youth and adults in the community and beyond. By practicing Tai Chi one feels a sense of peace, which then is readily shared with others that one comes in contact with. Peace must start within in order for it to ripple and spread without. Jumpstart program offering financial support for youth participation by Treena Mielke Black Press
Youngsters in Sylvan Lake whose parents can’t afford to allow them to participate in
sports activities or youth groups can have an opportunity to receive the financial boost they need through Jumpstart. Jumpstart, a
Canadian Tire initiative, is a national charitable program that helps financially disadvantaged youth participate in organized sport and recreation.
Presented - Sylvan Lake Legion Poppy Chairperson Sharon Graham presented a $1,000 bursary to Clayton Hammer while his parents, Roger (left) and Leonor (right) joined in the celebration. Both his grandfathers fought in World War II and he’s lived in Sylvan Lake all his life. For more information on Legion bursaries, which are available to the children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren of Canadian ex-service persons (war veterans or post-war service), contact Graham through the Legion branch. Through the program, registration, equipment and/or transportation costs are covered. Canadian Tire in Sylvan Lake is one of more than 310 chapters dedicated to making the program successful. Office manager Tanya Adams said the store offers various promotions for the program and all money raised through the Sylvan Lake store stays in the community. “It’s a program that helps parents who can’t afford to enroll their child in sports. We help make it happen through the program. It is for the people here in Sylvan Lake. The money stays here.” Sylvan Lake chapter member Monique Pummings said $6,000 has been disbursed for registration fees and equipment through the program, which was started in June.
“There is an immense need here,” she said. “We have received so many applications.” Pummings said the program is available for youngsters aged four to 18 years of age. As well as sports, applications are received for financial assistance to join youth groups such as Girl Guides or Scouts. Pummings said
applications are available at Sylvan Lake Aquatic Centre. As well as in-store fundraisers, Jumpstart is funded through a variety of local events and anyone may make a donation. Money raised through Canadian Tire customer donations goes directly to the program. The funding each
child receives is based on chapter budgets and demand. Grants are provided directly to the non-profit or charitable organization. To help support Jumpstart, individuals may make a donation, host their own event in support of the program, or support a fundraising event.

Cody’s athletics society needs parents’ involvement by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
Athletes participating in H. J. Cody High School extra-curricular sports benefit from the dedication of some behind the scenes vol-
unteers who are now searching for a new leader. H. J. Cody Athletics Society was formed a number of years ago as a fundraising arm to help with all the costs involved in participat-

Last year the society also sponsored the athletics recognition assembly to honour the school’s athletes. The organization has suffered recently due to a lack of involvement by parents and those still involved are hoping to encourage a few new parents who have children involved to step up and help, said Vandermeer. The next society meeting is Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. in the library at H. J. Cody.
It’s not a major time commitment, she indicated. Other than organizing for the casino, the society executive is

- Travis Brigley (centre) presented a cheque to Sylvan Lake Minor Hockey for $8,000 from the Central Alberta Young Guns Golf Foundation. Accepting were minor hockey President Daryl Pickering and Vice President Blair Mack. Brigley said the Young Guns event is organized by young NHL up and comers and NHL players. Every year 10 to 12 organizations benefit from the $130,000$150,000 raised by the tournament held at Alberta Springs during the summer. The money donated to the Sylvan Lake organization will be used to help youngsters play hockey who would not otherwise be able to afford to play, said Pickering. provincial finals. It is here that Sumner will hopefully compete for the title of Alberta submission series champion. For the fourth submission series, Sumner competed in both No-Gi and Gi in the heavyweight 205 plus division. Gi Involves the traditional Uniform, while No-Gi is just wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Ken lost his first Gi match three to zero on a last minute guard pass and was out of the running in that division. In the Gi division, he fought against more heavyweights, winning his first match by arm-bar, and then losing to an arm-bar in his second match to finish in second place. Eric Borrowman competed in the 170 to 185, both Gi and No-Gi division. In the Gi division, he fought a very experienced competitor from Edmonton and lost due to a triangle choke in the first round after being up two to zero halfway through the match. In the Gi he lost the first match and won his second against his teammate, then lost his third match on points. It was a very close one, seven
to six. Ultimately he ended up in fourth place. Guy Lacoursiere also competed in Gi and No-Gi. After only two months of training, he decided to jump in and try his hand at competing. He ended up taking fourth in both Gi and No-Gi, missing a couple of very close submission attempts. The fourth member from Sylvan Lake declined to be named. Finally, Cory B. was in Calgary for the Striker series. He competed in the heavyweight 205 plus division. It was here that he fought people with almost twice the experience, but he showed great heart and competed well. He took a silver medal after beating someone with much more experience than him to get into the finals match. He lost to someone with close to twice the experience he has, but with a great showing. He was also awarded his yellow rank the previous night so it was a great opportunity for him to show his skills. Videos from the tournament are available online on YouTube.

The smiles were bright and the temperature warm as students from École Steffie Woima Elementary School participated in the annual Terry Fox Run last Thursday afternoon. A total of $2,166 was raised through their efforts for the Terry Fox Foundation. STEVE DILLS PHOTOS
Sylvan Lake pastor to appear on “The Bachelor Canada” by Aleisha Bosch Sylvan Lake News
Chantelle Harink, a 25-year-old pastor from Sylvan Lake, will be among 25 women vying for the affections of CFL wide receiver Brad Smith on the first season of “The Bachelor Canada”. Harink, who will be known by her first name only on the show, works as the assistant director of Sunnyside Christian Retreat Centre in Birchcliff. With her mother, she also founded Makaway Kamp, a non-profit camp for
underprivileged children. In her video introduction on the show’s website, Harink said she hasn’t had a lot of experience dating, but that she’s realized she’s ready for love. “It’s challenging to find guys that respect what I do, but yet see me still as a girl who wants to fall in love,” said Harink in the video. She lists grapes, dill pickles, and Starbucks coffee as her favourite foods on the show’s website. The show’s contestants and their relatives are not allowed
to speak with the media until they are no longer on the show. Citytv has announced five new bachelorettes per week in the weeks leading up to the show’s premiere. So far, Harink will appear alongside three other Albertans, including a makeup artist from Wetaskiwin. Brad Smith has played for the Montreal Alouettes, Toronto Argonauts, and Edmonton Eskimos. The show will take place in a Victoria mansion. It premiered Oct. 3 on Citytv.
