A 67-2 win against Hanna Hawks has clinched first place in league play and a bye in the first round of playoffs for the Rimbey Spartans High School six-man football team. Despite the winter conditions last Wednesday, Oct. 10, the Spartans playing on their home turf, executed a nearly flawless game, soundly trouncing their opponent for the second time this season. Town council debates future use of Parkland Manor By Treena Mielke A heated discussion around the council table concerning the future of the Parkland Manor, if and when it is vacated, finally ended amiably. After a lengthy debate, council, at its Wed., Oct. 10 meeting, voted unanimously to accept a motion by Coun. Jack Webb to express support to the Rimoka Foundation of their intention to be involved in the future redevelopment and reuse of the property made vacant by the Rimbey Rimoka Foundation seniors’ housing project. After council expressed strong opposition, Webb withdrew his original motion which was to instruct the Rimoka Board that council supported the manor being used for affordable housing once the residents were moved to a
new location. “Our only part of the application (to the Province for an aging in place facility) that isn’t complete is having some use for the manor,” said Webb, who also sits on the Rimoka Board. Webb said an email from MLA Joe Anglin to Mayor Sheldon Ibbotson and council confirmed that time was of the essence regarding a decision about the future use of the manor. “To reinforce Rimoka’s application for a new lodge, it now appears the ministry will give greater consideration (all other criterion being equal) to an application that contained a definitive request pertaining to the continued use of the old facility that satisfied a local need,” Anglin said in his email.

Maybe the health of the building means it will be demolished.” Coun. Paul Payson said he doesn’t feel qualified to make such a decision. “I’m not an architect. I don’t know what the building would be the best suited for.” Coun. Scott Ellis, who attended the meeting via Skype, said he understood the importance of council’s involvement. “I’m not against the idea, but couldn’t we change the language a bit?” he questioned. After a lengthy discussion which did not result in a solution, council took a short break. Webb’s new motion was then passed unanimously. Continued on Page 3

“That makes sense to me,” said Webb. “I don’t want to see anything happen so this will be denied.” However, council remained opposed to the suggestion that the future use of the manor be for affordable housing. “We need to provide input, but I don’t think anyone is suggesting we decide on the building’s future,” said Ibbotson. “Rimoka is the lead group on it. If we make a proposal here, we’re out of line.” Coun. Gayle Rondeel said she could not support the motion. “It supposedly has asbestos, it is old and in need of repair. I agree that our co-operation is essential, but we need to ask more questions.

ATB senior economist optimistic By Treena Mielke An optimistic economic forecast for Alberta by a senior economist with ATB Financial was reassuring for Rimbey’s mayor who was among around 100 people attending a presentation dealing with global and provincial economics. “It’s always interesting to get a perspective from an expert and it looks like baring any major upsets, the economy is on an upswing. Basically we’re doing the best out of the G8.” Mayor Sheldon Ibbotson attended the presentation by Todd Hirsch, held at The Best Western Hotel in Sylvan Lake Oct. 4. The presentation was sponsored by the Sylvan Lake Chamber of Commerce and the Sylvan Lake branch of ATB. “Albertans are spending a lot and feeling very confident,’ said Hirsch. “They are secure in their jobs. Retail is robust and the population is growing.” Alberta is all about oil, he noted, adding tension in the Middle East has moved oil prices up. “The Middle East is a big supply for crude oil,” he said. “I would like to say oil
prices would never tumble, but they could.” “One thing I know for sure, oil could be between zero and a million dollars a barrel,” he joked. “(It could become a) touch softer than it is now but we will continue to see investment in oil sands and conventional drilling.” The agriculture picture is looking brighter than it has in the past, he added. “Prices are rising.” He attributed the higher prices to a higher standard of living in China and India. “They want more food and better quality of food,” he said. “Western Canada is situated well to take advantage of that.” On the livestock front, Hirsch suggested the E. coli situation is not a real cause for alarm, economically. “I don’t think there will be a real economic fallout because of E. coli.” Mortgage rates in Canada should remain constant in 2013, he said. “There is not a whiff of inflation in the Canadian economy. I can’t see much movement in mortgage rates for 12 to 15 months,” he said. The US economy is only OK, he noted. “The best you can say for the US economy is they are treading water. It is not operating
where it should.” The employment picture in the US doesn’t seem to be particularly bright, he said. “Jobs are not coming back to the US and discouraged workers are dropping out of the workforce.” While Hirsch emphasized that locally, the economy is strong and stable, he said the global economy might feel like a mess and the traditional tools of monetary policy don’t appear to be working. Hirsch compared the global economy to eating in a restaurant where there was no utensils and no accommodating waiters or waitresses. He said compromise and co-operating among the chefs of global economy is the only way to prevent a major economic downturn. Tony Goode, Rimbey’s CAO, he attended the session because he thought it would be “worthwhile to get an update on the global and provincial picture.” “It seems we’re in pretty good shape, though obviously things can change, it seems we have a good standing compared to other places.” Goode was disappointed the economist didn’t talk about municipal debt levels.
Council debate its role in proposal Continued from page 1 In his email, Anglin said the manor is within the jurisdiction of the provincial government and any decision will ultimately be that of the ministry, not the town, or the Rimoka Housing Authority. “It is my recommendation that you convene a meeting of the town council at your earliest convenience for the sole purpose of passing a declarative motion that instructs the Rimoka Board of the town’s need and recommended use for the old lodge once vacated,” he said. Anglin suggested the library may want to move to the manor, once it became vacant. However, librarian Jean Keetch said that was not an option she was considering. “I wouldn’t rule it out, but I need some place to move immediately. And moving to the manor (which would need extensive renovation) involves a lot more money than we would be able to raise.” Keetch said a library expansion within the building it is now housed in is a more viable option. Ibbotson dismissed Anglin’s suggestion that the Outreach School may wish to use the manor
once it had become vacant, noting that that decision is the responsibility of Wolf Creek’s Public Schools Although Anglin encouraged council to take a stand regarding a future use of the manor, he stressed the final decision rests with the ministry. “It will take at least two years to complete the lodge once construction begins and needs can change drastically over a couple of years,” he said. Rimoka Housing is waiting for a proposal now before the provincial government asking for approval to go ahead with a multi million dollar aging in place facility for Rimbey. The proposal is in the hands of the Minister of Municipal Affairs, Doug Griffiths.

Delicious. And it was!
Because, of course, it’s not the matched perfection that makes it perfect, anyway. I know that in my head, even if I forget sometimes. And, so even as the wind got all huffy and blew huge swirls of leaves around ferociously, and political debates raged somewhere, and world events remained chaotic and unsettled, things inside my house remained calm and happy. We were in the eye of the storm and it was good. I had the honor; the absolute honor of cradling a seven-week old baby in my arms for a few precious minutes, before his mom, hovering, the way moms do, took him back into protective custody. I received a sticky, delightful kiss from my one-year-old grandson, who, upon finishing his dinner which he had shoved into his mouth the way one-year-olds do, flung the tray of his highchair back so all the remaining food fell on the floor. He laughed, and gave me another sticky kiss and, for some reason, I laughed too, feeling happy, ridiculously so.
I was gifted with flowers, pumpkin pies, salads, deserts and, most importantly, hugs. And people, in comfortable disorganized order, spilled in and out of my kitchen, scraping vegetables, cleaning, and doing other nice things until finally everything got done. And in the end, when all the dishes were washed, dried and put away, I was once again gifted with a special and timely gift. The gift of music. Someone played the guitar and the rest of us sang with the kids, and finally, they all spilled out into the warm night air, still singing, B-I-NG-O. “Thank you,” they all said, “thank you, thank you, thank you for a lovely day.” “No”, I said. “Thank you” And, I meant it. I truly did, because without the people to sit in the mismatched chairs and eat from the mismatched plates, I wouldn’t have had those moments to remember. And that wouldn’t be good. Not good at all!
on someone who may simply show a shocking degree of cultural ignorance or who just can’t curb the impulse to speak before he or she thinks. Political parties that try to stifle internal dissent, or that discourage open expression of ideas, end up getting branded as censors. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has been hit pretty hard by the media, for example, for exercising too much control over his MPs. The irony is that no matter how much control a prime minister or premier tries to exercise, it’s damn near impossible to silence the loose cannons. They’re just too unpredictable. But the consequences can be devastating. In the case of the first example above, Alberta’s Wildrose Party seemed destined to achieve an historic victory in this year’s provincial election. All leader Danielle Smith needed to do was to assure voters there was no hard-right socially conservative agenda lurking in the shadows. Candidate Ron Leech’s ignorant outburst undid all of the party’s hard work, and may well have single-handedly cost them the election. I don’t have the solution to this problem for party leaders — if I did,
I’d be a wealthy political consultant. But I do know that no one can succeed by trying to suppress dissent. The healthiest parties allow free-flowing internal debate, and encourage the expression of unconventional ideas. The hope is that over time the best ideas and brightest minds rise to the top. As for the ignorant few? If they can’t figure out for themselves that they don’t really deserve the public’s trust, let us hope their constituents are willing to deliver the message. And, if the voters fail to act, it might be time to reconsider that oneway ticket to Siberia. THE OFFENDERS: Alberta Wildrose party candidate Ron Leech, April 16, 2012, drives a spike through his party’s election bid. Conservative federal MP Rob Anders, Oct. 1, 2012, embarrasses the prime minister, forcing the PMO to jump into immediate damage control. Liberal MP Carolyn Parrish, on her way out of a meeting on February 26, 2003, the eve of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Doug Firby is editor-in-chief of Troy Media, and national affairs columnist.
Foot-in-mouth disease runs across all party lines Great leaders and great parties have many things in common. One of the unhappier things is the hidden enemy from within, the unwitting Trojan Horse that exists virtually unnoticed until the moment he or she can exact the greatest harm on the cause they claim to support. What kind of things do they say? To give you a sense, let us pause for moment to reflect on these not-so-famous moments in Canadian politics: “I think, as a Caucasian, I have an advantage. When different community leaders, such as a Sikh leader or a Muslim leader speaks, they really speak to their own people in many ways. As a Caucasian I believe that I can speak to all the community.” (1) “I actually think one of the great stories that was missed by journalists was that Mr. Mulcair, with his arm twisted behind the scenes, helped to hasten Jack Layton’s death.” (2) “Damn Americans. I hate those bastards.” (3) 9-1-1? We have a four-alarm situation going on in the House. Call in the backup. The speaker of these and similar comments is the backbencher, often the mediocre intellect who has little chance of ever reaching cabinet, and has little value to the party, other than to show up and vote on command. They come in all political stripes, and they aren’t just old white guys, either. They can be women and they can be from any cultural background. It might be unfair to call these people stupid, although there are critics who have done just that. Perhaps they are just people who can’t rein in their passion. Perhaps their personal

ideologies or religious beliefs blind them to the consequences of their words. No matter. What does matter is that when the leader least expects it, the enemy from within slips a sabre between the shoulder blades. Et tu, Rob? In a different political environment — Stalinist Russia, for example — you might just march these dumdums out the back door, and reassign them to Siberia. And, let’s be honest, there are times when such a solution might seem to make a lot of sense. But, of course, we live in a democracy. And that means that — love ’em or hate ’em a leader has to “dance with the one who brung ya,” to borrow the words of ex-PM Brian Mulroney, a man who had to scramble on occasion to control the damage from some loose-lipped ministers such as the incorrigible John Crosbie. Translation for Mulroney’s words: The MPs (or MLAs) who run in each riding are the ones who are going to help you form government. Your fortune rises and falls on their success. Think twice before you banish them from your team. Now, there are examples of politicians who have gotten themselves evicted from caucus, but it is usually for defying party directives or engaging in some overtly unethical or illegal behaviour. In other words, by the time they’re tossed, there’s usually a good case for pushing them out the door. It’s not so easy to exact punishment

Town supports provincial volleyball tournament By Treena Mielke The Rimbey Junior/Senior High School will receive $1,000 to go towards a provincial volleyball tournament to be hosted by the school next month. At its regular meeting, Oct. 10, council agreed to comply with a recommendation by CAO Tony Goode to support the school for the funding. The school had previously applied for the Community Events Grant Program funding for $500, but was turned down by the recreation board as it did not qualify for approval due to the school’s municipal property tax exemption. Presently, there is only $1,625.71 remaining in the community events budget, so council agreed to take the funds from the public relations fund. In a letter to Mayor Sheldon Ibbotson and council, Marian Johnson, chairperson for the Rimbey Junior/ Senior High School Parent Council pointed out the event will bring many
people to the community and will be an opportunity to showcase the town. She said one of the challenges faced by the organizing committee is that they are already running at a deficit and need to find sponsors for the event in an attempt to break even. “I am writing to ask, on behalf of the parent council, if the Town of Rimbey might be able to sponsor the banquet, which will be attended by all the players and coaches from Rimbey Jr/Sr High School, as well as those from the other 11 teams,” she said. “Any support you are able to provide would be appreciated, and would reduce the financial burden on the team, and the school community.” Councilor Gayle Rondeel supported granting the school the funding, but asked that a budget be submitted to council so they could ascertain where the money would be spent. “This tournament is a big deal for Rimbey. I would like to see us support it,” said Ibbotson.

Chamber and ATB recognize small business week here By Treena Mielke Rimbey and District Chamber of Commerce and ATB Financial have joined forces to bring in speakers representing the business and the rural aspects of the community for Small Business Week. On Oct. 17 at the Seniors’ Drop In Centre beginning at 7 p.m. presentations will be made by Jennifer Belanger on ‘How to Advertise on the Web’ and by Jennifer Jenkins, who will speak about FarmOn and the Rimbey Resource Initiative. Jennifer Belanger is a stay at home mom from Sylvan Lake who has set up her own successful business, ‘Mompreneur & Social Media Rock Star.’ As a social media consultant, manager and trainer, she provides marketing information regarding on-line strategies and tips to groups and individuals and offers several courses on social media. “My true passion is social media and marketing. I am very lucky to work from home at JenniferBelanger.com as a social media consultant. It allows me to spread my wings and continue to learn and grow in my field everyday,” she says on her Jennifer Jenkins, a rancher from Southern Alberta, who is a facilitator for FarmOn Foundation will make a presentation following Belanger. Alberta farmers to provide information and connections for farmers to allow them to successfully operate within the agricultural industry have created the FarmOn Foundation. To successfully achieve this mission they have created Farm Masters, an online community of learning that incorporates a library rich with business videos and inspirational stories providing insight and hope. By becoming a member, entrepreneurs have access to a growing online community of peers and experts who provide support. Jenkins, who has been trained in enterprise facilitation, provides one-on-one coaching and helps entrepreneurs build competent management teams and access pertinent information. Jackie Stratton, president of Rimbey chamber, said volunteers are being recruited to participate on a resource panel that will direct people to access help through the Farm Master Facilitator. The panel’s job is to introduce the facilitator to local acquaintances and also to meet monthly on line to share knowledge that may be helpful.
The success of the panel is dependent upon the volunteers keeping all information in strict confidence; actively participating in training and adhering to the principles of Farm Masters. “Everything is kept very confidential,” said Stratton. “We (the chamber) have been planning this for some time in hopes it will be a resource for
the area.” Stratton said coffee and dessert will be provided at the presentation
and those who wish to attend are asked to RSVP to Carrie at 403-392-6521 or Jackie at 403-843-2727.

Rimbey Grade 8 girls volleyball team enjoys wins By Treena Mielke Rimbey Grade 8 girls volleyball team is having a great season, enjoying lots of wins, gaining valuable experience on the court, and most of all, having fun. Coach Karen Skeels said the team won all five sets Wed., Oct. 10 when they took on Terrace Ridge Hawks, a Grade 8 girls’ team from Lacombe. “We have had a really good season,” said Skeels. “We are learning a lot and have won several league games.” Skeels said she is working with assistant coach Rachel Hudson to teach the girls new skills. “We’re making them play a step up of just playing on the court. They’re doing positional playing. It’s cool to see them developing so well. I’m seriously proud of them all.” The girls play in Lacombe at Father Lacombe School Oct. 17 and will host their own tournament in Rimbey Oct. 19 and 20.

Despite the winter conditions last Wednesday, Oct. 10, the Spartans playing on their home turf, executed a nearly flawless game, soundly trouncing their opponent for the second time this season. Head coach Bill Bramford said the Spartans defense made a big difference early in the game stopping Hanna inside the five-yard line three times in the first half of play. The Spartans began their climb on the scoreboard early, scoring a touchdown on the first play. Bramford said the offense played extremely well, moving the ball the entire

“It was a total team effort. Twenty-six kids dressed and 26 kids got field time. There was contributions from all of them. Everyone looked good, everyone played well. Several guys played phenomenally.” The Spartans, who are sitting at 5-0 in league play, have a bye this week and will face the Caroline Cougars Oct. 26 in Rimbey. “It’s a bye week this week which is good,” said Bramford. “In bye weeks the players get some rest and we have had some players with nagging injuries. We haven’t yet fielded our whole team.” The Spartans first playoff game will be held Nov. 6 in Rimbey. Bramford said he is hoping for good weather. “Even if it is cold, but there is no snow, it’s not too bad,” he said.

There was no turnovers and no big lapses and no fumbles, even though the ball was slippery.” The head coach said he was especially proud of his players, who faced the winter conditions head on and simply went ahead and played football. “They certainly showed gumption and character. We had been preparing for it all week, but it was a real test to the team and they could have complained and focused on the weather instead of playing football, but they didn’t. They just fought through the cold.” Bramford said he couldn’t single out any one player as a star.

A large room full of exercise equipment is waiting to be used. Even though Panther Fitness is located in the old shop area of Bentley Elementary School and is accessible to students, it is also available for the public’s use. An open house of the gym and all the equipment was held the evening of Oct. 4. Panther Fitness opened to the public Oct. 9 and will be available between the hours of 3:30-9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is closed on weekends and on school holidays. When a suitable, reliable “morning person” is found who will open up and supervise the room, it will also be open from 6 to 10 a.m. three days a week. If you are interested in this part-time position, contact principal Lane Moore at the school. Anyone who wants to make use of the weight training/cardiovascular equipment can call the school at 403-748-3770 or 403-341-4153 Ext. 2121. Change rooms and lockers are available. The school bought out a private gym near Grand Prairie and renovated where the woodworking classes used to be held. They’re now held on the second floor of the school. “We saw there was a decrease in shop usage,” said librarian and gym manager Sherry Haarstad. “When we saw the equipment for sale we thought it’d be perfect for this space.” The gym features change rooms, washrooms and classes. Zumba classes will be held in the gym, spin classes in the school’s mezzanine and starting mid-October, kettle bell classes. There will be one and nine-month membership packages as well as $5 drop-ins. The project has been in the works for a couple of years and now is ready to go. It will be worked into the curriculum for students during the day and be open to the public after hours so the whole community can benefit.

Alberta student performance results rising Record percentage of students achieve excellence in provincial tests Edmonton... Students in Alberta’s schools are increasingly demonstrating excellence in provincial achievement tests and diploma exams. The overall percentage of students who attained a standard of excellence on Grade 3, 6, and 9 provincial achievement tests (PATs) increased to 20.2 per cent from 19.5 per cent in the previous year. The
percentage of students who met the acceptable standard also rose slightly to 75.5 per cent from 75.2 per cent. One of the highlights of the results is the percentage of students who achieved the standard of excellence in Science 6 and Science 9. Excellence refers to students who demonstrate a mastery of the core subject material. Acceptable refers
to students who demonstrate an understanding of the subject material. “Ensuring our elementary and junior high students are developing a strong educational foundation in their early academic years is absolutely vital,” said Education Minister Jeff Johnson. “These results indicate that students in Alberta’s schools are acquiring the skills needed to eventually make the successful transition into higher levels of learning, including high school and beyond.”
Higher participation rates in Grade 12 diploma exams reveal that more high school students are choosing to take science courses, with enrolments in Chemistry 30 and Biology 30 now comparable to enrolments in Pure Mathematics 30. The focus on equipping students with strong literacy skills is also reflected in the improved rates of excellence and acceptable standards in English 30-1 exams. “The improvements in critical reading and writing highlight one of our ongoing areas of focus,” said Johnson. “We’re also encouraged to see more students pursuing an interest in science, which is one of the cornerstones of the knowledge-based world in which they will live and work.” Provincial standardized tests are one way of enabling Alberta Education, as well as school boards, superintendents, principals and teachers, to assess how well students are meeting provincial standards while identifying strengths or areas for improvement in local programs. The Alberta government is reviewing provincial curriculum, with a greater focus on competencies and preparing young Albertans to be engaged thinkers and ethical citizens with an entrepreneurial spirit. This review will also impact provincial assessment. Provincial trends are available online at education.alberta.ca by clicking on Provincial Testing.

Wolf Creek Public Schools (WCPS) has seen great progress with its English learners since adopting Imagine Learning, a language and literacy software program, last year. After expanding its implementation to 15 schools mid-year, the school division is looking to replicate the success it’s seen by deploying Imagine Learning across all of its schools. Designed to bring student reading up to grade level, Imagine Learning promotes high student engagement while working through an adaptive curriculum. Built around solid pedagogy and cutting-edge animation, audio, and video, the program offers interactive, personalized experiences for English learners, students with disabilities, struggling readers and early childhood education students. “From an administrator perspective, this program is delivering on everything that was promised,” said Gerry Varty, assistant superintendent of learning support/system improvement. “Individualized, personalized instruction under the guidance of the teacher, solid attention to detail in the implementation of researchbased promising practices, and engaging content and delivery.” The program doesn’t attempt to replace the teacher; instead it captures detailed diagnostic information — including audio clips of the student reading aloud — and presents these to the teacher for analysis, a feature that captured Wolf Creek’s attention. This lets the teacher tailor the instruction the student receives, matching it to the other activities and needs of the classroom. Varty found the Imagine Learning representatives to be open and adaptable, eager to learn about the unique Alberta context and provide the software in the most effective way. “They entered into a partnership with Wolf Creek in a very real way,”
said Varty. “They worked closely with us on many aspects of software deployment and implementation across the district.” A feature of Imagine Learning is the capacity to operate in the student’s native language. This works as a scaffold to help the English learner transition to working through the activities in English. As the learner becomes more fluent, this support is gradually withdrawn and finally removed. The program also focuses on developing academic vocabulary across a range of subjects and in various situations; this enables the learner to more effectively function in an academic environment. Originally Imagine Learning started as a pilot project and then moved to a district-wide implementation and teachers are already noticing a difference. “The students are clearly gaining in their academic vocabulary,” said Marica McWhinnie, an elementary teacher and technology coach in the district. “They feel like they are in control of their own progress, and that’s powerful for kids at this age.” The students use Imagine Learning several times a week for 20 minutes at a time. “The students look forward to their time on Imagine Learning,” said Bluffton School principal Nolan Krauss. “They are fully engaged when using the software. There are no ‘reluctant learners’ with this program.” The program has garnered support with administrators, teachers, students, and their parents. “I can attest to how my daughters have fared with their learning to read and write English and even the increase in their vocabulary and I can tell you, for only having been in school in Canada for two and a half months, I am amazed!” said Laurie Smith, a parent whose children have been using Imagine Learning.

The Rimbey Review, October 16, 2012 17
Supersized drink puts woman over twice legal limit Rimbey RCMP responded to 40 calls for service last week. Highlights of the week include a plethora of copper wire thefts, uttering threats to kill, assaults, criminal harassment, impaired driving, domestic disputes and other serious matters. Supersized drunk driver On Thanksgiving Day, an alert Rimbey Mountie observed a vehicle driving erratically in town. A 26-year-old Bluffton-area woman stated she had “one drink” when the officer inquired about her sobriety. She didn’t however elaborate how big the drink really was as
she provided two breath samples registering over twice the legal limit. She was charged accordingly. More copper wire thefts in area A rash of copper wire thefts occurred throughout the rural detachment area. Thieves entered several oilfield sites and stole grounding wires. Recently, there have been several arrests made and multiple charges laid in similar cases. However, these crimes are continuing. If you see anyone suspiciously hanging around an oilfield site, please call the detachment immediately. Vandals smash windows
During the late night hours, several businesses in town and the school had windows smashed. The senseless vandalism is being fully investigated and leads are being followed up on by the pursuing officers hot on the trail of the culprit responsible for the damages. The analysis of the evidence and facts at hand in these matters is continuing. Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation. Charges in domestic assault Police responded to a 911 call regarding a domestic dispute. Officers quickly responded and arrested a 23-year-old man, a resident of Rimbey, for assaulting his spouse causing bodily harm. Children Services was called in to assist police in dealing with the situation. The accused has been held in custody awaiting a future court appearance to answer to the charges.
Brown bear sighted Police received a complaint of a brown bear near Gull Lake. Yogi had no idea he was bothering anyone and had not seen the “No Trespassing” sign. He gladly moved on to fill up on berries elsewhere getting ready for the long nap he was planning on taking shortly. Charge laid in cold case A cold case was re-evaluated last week. A theft under $5,000 occurred over a year ago, however at the time no solid suspect was identified. The evidence was analyzed and shared with neighboring detachments. A suspect was discovered and he was brought into the Rimbey detachment for questioning. The accused, a resident of Sylvan Lake, confessed to the alleged crime and was charged with an upcoming court date in Rimbey to share his story with the Judge.

Bluffton Veterinary Services By Treena Mielke A team of veterinary professionals at Bluffton Veterinary Services, formerly known as Burrage Veterinary Services, has combined their skill, expertise and experience to provide large and small animals with the best medical care possible. Burrage Veterinary Services was established in 2002 by Dr. Pat Burrage who moved to the area to take over the existing large animal practice in Bluffton. The veterinary service expanded to include companion animals in 2004 when 1,600 square-feet were added to the existing facility. The large animal component of the practice includes equine, bovine (beef) and ovine (sheep) and has expanded into alternative livestock (elk and bison). As the practice expanded, Dr. Burrage decided to increase the staff accordingly and presently Bluffton Veterinary Services includes three veterinarians, two animal health technicians and a veterinary receptionist/hospital manager. Dr. Andrea Falt joined the practice in 2007, adding her expertise to managing the small animal clientele. Dr. Falt, formerly from British Columbia and a graduate of the Saskatoon Veterinary College, now lives near Bluffton with her husband, Cameron and children, Hanna and Connor. As well as being an assistant leader with the Bluffton 4-H Club she assists her husband Cameron on the farm caring for 200 cows. Most recently Dr. Stacey White has joined the practice as a second veterinarian to manage the companion animal practice. Dr. White, who moved from Ontario, is a graduate of the Saskatoon Veterinary College and has spent the majority of his career in companion animal practice. He is general manager for the Canadian Sheep Breeders’ Association and is the owner of a sheep flock.
has been with Bluffton Veterinary Services since 2006. Providing excellent customer service and patient care is a priority for every member of the team at Bluffton Veterinary Services. “We are a service oriented business and as such we are very particular on how we manage our patients and clients,” said Dr. Burrage. “We want both animals and people alike to feel comfortable coming through our doors.” Bluffton Veterinary Services is housed in a bright, clean and comfortable clinic. The practice has an in-house blood/ chemistry analyzer and digital radiography (X-rays), which is linked through a comprehensive computer system which contains all the client and patient information. The equipment can be used for both companion animal, equine, bovine and alternative livestock. The computer system provides the team at Bluffton Veterinary Services with the opportunity to communicate readily with spec cialis specialists should another opinion be req required. “W “We are very excited with what we h have here,” said Dr. Burrage. “The d digital X-ray machine has opened u up our ability to expand and to p provide an extended level of care to our clients.” B Bluffton Veterinary Services is o open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and is on call 24/7 for la large animal calls. After hour ccompanion animal calls go to the Animal Emergency Services in Red Deer. A drive through facility meaning clients can bring their large animals to the clinic, drive in to an enclosed area, drop the animal off, close the gate, and drive away is a unique feature which Dr. Burrage is pleased to offer. “It makes it much easier for the client,” he said.

“It is an animal hospital, but we treat it no different than if it was a human hospital. We want it to be spic and span and we want to provide an environment where the animal is comfortable. We want it to be a happy place.”
