It recounted how she became a victim of an online stalker who caused her to be severely bullied, emotionally and physically, both on the Internet and at a number of schools she attended. She committed suicide last week. A survey conducted by Burnaby-Douglas NDP MP Kennedy Stewart found that 64 per cent of respondents with an opinion support keeping the Chevron refinery open while 36 per cent want to see it closed. “These survey results tell me a solid majority of local residents recognize the positive economic impacts of the Chevron refinery,” said Stewart in a press release. “However, these numbers also show that many continue to have legitimate concerns about the environmental impacts of the refinery’s daily operations.” Stewart did the telephone survey as research for his upcoming testimony at the National Energy Board hearing into Chevron’s application for priority status on Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain
pipeline. As the only major oil refinery left in B.C., Chevron’s application aims to secure a sufficient supply of crude oil through the pipeline to its North Burnaby refinery. In recent months, the company has had to resort to using trains and tanker trucks to feed its operations. Before asking respondents whether they support keeping the refinery open, the survey stated, “Burnaby’s Chevron refinery provides one-third of Metro Vancouver’s gasoline but is also a major polluter. The refinery is in danger of closing, ending its emissions but also driving up local gas prices.” The automated phone survey contacted 12,498 Burnaby homes located north of Lougheed Highway, with 1,231 people taking part. Of those, 44 per cent supported keeping the refinery
open, while 25 per cent wanted it closed and 31 per cent were undecided. When only those who stated an opinion are counted, 64 per cent support and 36 per cent oppose the refinery. “I support Chevron’s application for priority destination designation. There would be clear negative consequences for British Columbia if the Burnaby Chevron refinery were to close, including having to import gas and jet fuel from abroad by sea or rail to meet local demand,” said Stewart. “However, this is an important opportunity to push Chevron to improve their environmental standards and to persuade them to use the cleanest technology available while operating in our backyards.”

But the opposite is true, with hindsight after many tragedies showing there were warning signs of situations no one thought were as bad as they turned out to be. “You can overreact, but it is so rare, I would rather deal with mopping up someone’s overreaction because somebody was concerned about a kid, than under-reaction that causes somebody their life.”

Amanda’s tragic tale The tragic tale of Amanda Todd is evolving by the minute. Sadly, it was several years of torment and abuse, as described on cue cards in her nine-minute YouTube video, that led her to take her own life last week, a month shy of her 16th birthday. It was not a sweet life, but one that has resonated around the world, as evidenced by the 14.5 million views of her trending video. It took a wrong turn when Amanda was coaxed into flashing her breasts while participating in an online chat several years ago. That photo was then repeatedly shared with her family and friends, teachers and strangers, after she refused to perform more. Every time she changed schools, it followed her. It’s difficult enough for teenagers to keep their heads up in the hallways if they have even a pimple on their face. Amanda must have felt like she was naked all the time. She struggled with anxiety and panic disorder, depression, abused drugs and alcohol. She admittedly made poor decisions, which led to more abuse, bullying. She was physically assaulted, then tried to kill herself. Watch her video. Read her words. She felt alone. She needed someone. That is what bullying is, not just the harmful words, but the isolation. It can be devastating, especially to a young person. Amanda didn’t want others to feel the way she did, for people to be quick to judge, to pile on, rather to speak up if someone is being mistreated. There will always be bullies as long as there are vulnerable people. And, unfortunately, as seen with the memorial Facebook page for Amanda, some people are ill. We can teach our younger ones to watch out for them, to be careful, how to avoid pitfalls, help pick them up and brush off when they do stumble. Teach them many things. But don’t forget compassion. —Black Press

MG, an author on CBC this morning kept saying “ummm” and “aaaand.”
It sounded as if Anna Maria Tremonti was interviewing a coal miner with a sore throat. It sounded as if he had never put three words together in sequence. He must have been unprepared. I’ve read his book and it is well written, provoking, and amusing. That didn’t come across in the interview. In today’s literary market writing is still the top skill a writer must have, but he must also have tech savvy, marketing and speaking skills. If you speak publicly it’s important to speak well; just ask Barack Obama. Just listen to Stephen Lewis— so articulate, so genuine, so relevant. He has to have three people doing sign language as they quickly tire out trying to keep up to him. I am fortunate to know many authors and poets. I listen to them at readings and conferences, at launches and festivals. And I can’t help but think that some of them

might benefit from Off The Page Toastmasters. Off The Page is a nontraditional group of Toastmasters International for writers who want to speak well and speakers who are learning to write. At present we meet on Saturday mornings twice monthly at the Justice Institute at Eighth and McBride in New Westminster. We learn to speak clearly in speeches, workshops and interviews. We practice improv and humour and questioning techniques. We do pitch session practises to prepare for writers’ conferences—the elevator pitch, and the 10-minute pitch. We practice introductions, summaries, and how to moderate or speak on a panel. Evaluation is swift and supportive, not pandering. No molly-coddling,

just constructive feedback. Authors want to respond intelligently to an interviewer and yet still respond with personality and spontaneity. Practice helps deal with unusual questions, practice trains me to relax and listen rather than scrambling for a response. Somehow it is worse when a writer, a person doused in words every day, ums and ahs her way through an interview. Surely she has considered the Q&A before the program. Surely she knows her book inside out, and has spent years thinking about it. Then her lack of fluency must be nerves, or thesaurusitis. She’s searching for an adjective, a memorable catch phrase, or a surprise reply to a simple question. Voice is crucial; in the audience at a launch or reading I cannot engage fully with the words if the writer speaks poorly. I’m too busy hoping she/he makes it through the piece. Not that I’m a perfect speaker, far from it. I even have to remind myself to breathe. Volume can kill a reading.

Too loud is painful, too soft is frustrating. I want to hear the words without wincing or straining. How far should your lips be from the mike? Depends, but the distance from thumb to pinky finger open-handed works well. It is the same with pacing; slam poets race through their poems leaving me wishing for a hard copy. Yes, it’s fun to rant and bop and test your memory skills in quick time. But I like to know what poets have to say, not just how fast they can say it. We’ve all been there: the awards night with a mouthy emcee, the wedding reception with a stumbling best man, and the lecture with a rambling or monotone speaker. When I hear a struggling speaker I empathize, and think of ways I can improve my own performance.

COMMENT is stopping our municipal governments from taking a stand with developers and obtaining some real progress on affordable housing? It’s a solution with few losers; developers get their large projects and the resulting profits, municipal governments get the population density they wish and contribute to alleviating a social ill, and we can finally start housing some of the least fortunate in our society. WATER ACCESS GALORE Re: We need more water access (Letters, NewsLeader, Oct. 12) The recent comment by Rockawaytheday via Twitter that “most” of Burnaby’s waterfront is “inaccessible and spoiled due to industry” had me scratching my head. Fraser Foreshore Park runs nearly the entire length of our water border to the south. What about Barnet Marine Park in the north? How about the trails around Deer Lake and Burnaby Lake? The trails along many of our salmon-bearing creeks? For a rapidly urbanizing municipality, I think Burnaby has done an excellent job of protecting waterfront and providing public access to it. BLUFF AND BLUSTER RINGS HOLLOW When it comes to generating revenue for government coffers, the Northern Gateway oil pipeline is “chump change” compared to the LNG plants slated to be built in B.C. So boasted our premier during her recent visit to Calgary. But it may very well be an empty boast. Before committing to such an expensive undertaking the natural gas companies first have to secure firm commitments from large gas consumers (e.g., China) to buy LNG at a price that will make the investment in liquefying plants profitable. For this to happen the current unit price of gas has to increase dramatically. In point of fact the price of natural gas has been in the doldrums for the past three years for the simple reason that there is too much supply
and not enough demand. One significant impact of this has been the undermining of the revenue estimates of the BC Liberal government through the collection of gas sale royalties. You will recall that it was almost a year ago that then Finance Minister Kevin Falcon revealed a projected $1.6 billion revenue shortfall attributable to a depressed natural gas unit price. Just when you think things are bad, they get worse. Almost simultaneous with Clark’s “chump change” remark was the breaking news that a U.S.based natural gas company concluded an agreement to deliver LNG to China at a deeply discounted price, but a price nevertheless based on current market realities. Energy Minister Rich Coleman tried to dismiss the deal as having no significant impact on the development of LNG exportation in B.C., but his notto-worry message rang hollow. Bluff and bluster doesn’t change the fact that the LNG train seems to have left the station without B.C. aboard. Bill Brassington Burnaby
ENFORCEMENT, NOT HOLLOW POLICIES Amanda Todd’s suicide, as the end result of bullying, both saddens me and infuriates me. About a year ago bullying received a lot of publicity in Burnaby, with the introduction of an anti-homophobia policy in schools. But teaching students about homosexuality will not stop bullying. Nevertheless, Burnaby adopted resolution 5.45 instead of making teachers enforce existing rules. Burnaby also elected an NDP school board, solidly behind resolution 5.45 and our teachers’ cop-out. I wonder how well those are sleeping who still seem to believe the community can ask for yet another study, as advanced by NDP MP Dany Morin. We have all known for a long time what works with bullies: a no-tolerance rule enforced by teachers. Meantime, I would like the Todd family to know how sorry I am for not having fought harder and, thus, being partly responsible for their tragic loss. Ziggy Eckardt, Burnaby

Cities can do a better job helping the homeless It’s a common refrain in Canada’s urban centres that there’s a chronic homelessness problem that isn’t being addressed, with many of the main concerns being the lack of coordination between federal, provincial and municipal governments to try and create a unified program to address homelessness. Here in Metro Vancouver, this is a serious concern, as we have municipalities struggling to provide services and a provincial government that simply has not been present and willing to help execute ideas and proposals to actually alleviate homelessness and poverty. This isn’t going to change, at least not until the May 2013 provincial election. That’s too long for our municipalities to wait before they can get the guarantee of provincial support to enact their policies. It won’t change at the federal level, where the Harper government doesn’t have any interest in addressing homelessness and poverty. That leaves an immediate response in the hands of our municipalities, the level of government with the least amount of funding available to it, which makes many people believe it has the least ability to actually affect change in such a wide-ranging policy area. In fact, the municipal governments have a wide range of options available to start actively combatting homelessness, particularly in British Columbia. The key is in the Local Government Act; two obscure sections of the Act that are too deep in the details for some people. In part 26, division 7, sections 904 and 905, the Local Government Act provides municipalities with the ability to increase the density of a given part of any zone, in concert with the developer. These sections also indicate that municipalities can attach conditions to the developer in exchange for that increased development. Those conditions can comprise only two things; amenities, which the Burnaby City Council has asked for often in the new large-scale towers being produced, and affordable or special needs housing. With these sections of the Act still being in effect, what

A provincial audit says TransLink could save an extra $41 million a year but even that is not expected to solve the transportation authority’s current cash crunch or its need for new long-term funding to expand transit. Some of the measures proposed are controversial because they would further degrade transit frequency, reversing TransLink’s strategy of fostering new ridership in underserved areas. The biggest area flagged for savings would see TransLink budget less conservatively and run with thinner financial reserves, even though cutting that too far could harm debt ratings and its ability to borrow cheaply. The wait between offpeak SkyTrains should be one to two minutes longer, the review recommends.
And it says too many bus routes run with too few passengers, even at peak times, calling for 22 underused routes to be either scrapped, run at reduced frequency or converted to community shuttles. The report found 43 per cent of bus routes run at less than half capacity, consuming $56 million a year. It also cites high operating costs and low productivity for community shuttles and HandyDart service. “A balance must also be sought between service for users and efficiency of operations,” the report said, noting TransLink sometimes bends to demands from cities or from community pressure rather than basing decisions on technical or financial merit. The report also suggests $5 million a year could be saved by cutting Transit Police and security to pre-Olympic levels after SkyTrain fare gates are activated and fare evasion drops.

TransLink board chair Nancy Olewiler said management will consider what more can be adjusted based on the audit, but added route cuts would affect riders. She said axing a bus route that runs only 30 per cent full now but is growing and could reach 65 per cent in five years could leave residents without a transit option, forcing them into cars. Olewiler suggests the region needs to consider whether it’s an acceptable trade-off to pay a bit more for some bus routes in order to ensure there’s a broad network of usable bus service running often enough. jnagel@blackpress.ca

Taser changes working, judge tells MLAs Tom Fletcher Black Press
VICTORIA – Retired judge Thomas Braidwood is “very pleased with the response” to his recommendations on the use of Taser stun guns by police in the wake of Robert Dziekanski’s death in 2007. Braidwood testified Tuesday before a legislature committee, after a senior RCMP official reported on training and procedure changes that led to an 87 per cent reduction in use of Tasers to subdue people. Braidwood emphasized that he stands by the core finding of his inquiry, which is that police in B.C. should continue to use them with new training and strict new rules. Those province-wide rules include requiring police to determine that the subject is causing bodily harm or is about to, and mandate that “de-escalation” or crisis intervention techniques be taught and used before a Taser is. He described a basic technique that could have been used when four Richmond RCMP officers approached a distraught Dziekanski at Vancouver International Airport. If one of those officers had simply pulled up a chair and sat down, Braidwood said, Dziekanski would likely be alive today. Similar techniques can defuse even violent domestic disputes, rightly considered by police to be their most dangerous calls, said Braidwood, a former prosecutor who went on to serve as a B.C. Supreme Court and Court of Appeal justice. The Taser rules also require police to have an automated defibrillator in the car, or in a supervisor’s vehicle in communities of 5,000 people or less. Independent testing of the stun guns is also required, and the rules apply to all municipal police in B.C. as well. On Monday, RCMP Assistant Commissioner Randy Beck told the committee that new
training began in 2011. By then the fallout from the Dziekanski case had led to a steep decrease in use of Tasers. Braidwood noted that so far there has not been a corresponding increase in police use of guns. “Have more police officers been injured while restraining violent subjects, or have officers discovered that other tools in their arsenal, such as training in crisis intervention techniques, have resolved many of these potentially dangerous confrontations without resorting to use of conducted energy weapons?” he asked. “It would appear to be a fruitful area for more
research.” Braidwood’s inquiry led not only to new Taser procedures, but also the establishment of B.C.’s new Independent Investigations Office, the civilian-led agency that began work this summer to take control of all police-involved incidents that result in death or serious bodily harm. Braidwood said the steps taken since his inquiry have filled a gap in the civilian oversight of police that is “a fundamental tenet that distinguishes Canada from totalitarian or dictatorial states.” WikiPedia

QB has Knights air attack on target Grade 11 quarterback pilots athletic passing game Grant Granger

For years, make that decades, the St. Thomas More Knights football program churned out star running backs such as CFL stars Jon Cornish and Calvin McCarty to name a couple. The Knight’s route to the promised land of a provincial championship was taken along the ground, although they didn’t always reach their destination. The last few years, the Knights have added an aerial attack to augment the ground game. Quarterback Mikey Carney was at the helm and he was good enough to get himself a spot on the University of Guelph Gryphons. This season, the Knights air force is being piloted by Grade 11 Chase Malcolm, who has them sporting a 4-2 overall record and in the top two in the provincial AAA rankings. He has averaged 200 yards passing a game, completed 77 per cent of his passes and thrown for 11 touchdowns in six games. Those are exceptional numbers for a high school QB. Football has been in Malcolm’s blood since he was six years old when he started playing. At first, he says, he was a running back but two years later he switched to quarterback when the previous one went to another team and they had no one else. Malcolm was only too happy to be the centre of attention at quarterback. “Every eight-year-old boy wants to score a touchdown. But once I got older I realized it was a team game,” says Malcolm during a break from a practice on the STM field. When Malcolm was heading into Grade 8 he wanted to go to a school with a football program. He chose STM because he’d seen the coaches adapt to Carney’s skills. “Mikey was probably one of the first athletic quarterbacks to come to St. Thomas More and once he came in they pretty well changed their offence to suit him. And once they decided to change

that for him I decided to go here,” says Malcolm. When he moved up to junior varsity in Grade 9, they already had a quarterback, Giovanni Trasolini, who had led STM to the Grade 8 final the year before Malcolm arrived. Trasolini, though, didn’t want to be a QB. He wanted to be the guy catching the passes, not throwing them. At six-foot-four, Trasolini has turned
into an enticing target for Malcolm. Receiver Malcolm Lee, who is six-foottwo, is also a favourite along with running back Jalen Jana and tight end Kevin Marshall, all of whom are in Grade 11 and won the provincial junior varsity AAA championship last year. They also play a lot of flag football together, notes Knights’ head coach Bernie Kully. “It’s a case of recognizing we have
certain guys that can do certain things, and utilizing them to your advantage,” says Kully, who credits offensive coordinator Joe Adams for making a lot of the changes to emphasize passing. Last Friday’s game in the rain when the Knights defeated the Terry Fox Ravens 36-6 at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West really showed off the air attack. Malcolm threw for 302 yards and three touchdowns, exceptional numbers for a high school quarterback. “It was impressive,” says Kully. Two of those TD tosses and 152 of the yards went to Trasolini. On one score, the Knights were backed up close to their own end zone when Malcolm reared back and threw it about 40 yards into Trasolini’s arms who romped the rest of the way. “It was pretty awesome, but it wasn’t just me,” says Malcolm of his performance. Malcolm also has a passion for lacrosse and holds out some hope he might be able to play both sports at the college level. “A dual scholarship would be unreal, but it’s pretty hard to get one of those,” says Malcolm. “But football will always be my favourite sport because it’s been that way ever since I was six years old.” This year there are four or five teams all in a good position to win the provincial championship. STM is just starting to round into form after starting the season with injuries to key people. Running back and linebacker Elliott Nelson, the 2011 B.C. Grade 11 player of the year, missed four games with a knee injury while Lee had a hip problem and Jalen broke a bone in his leg in the summer. “We’ve found more adversity already in the first month than what last year’s team did until November,” says Kully of the 2011 squad that went into the playoffs ranked No. 1 in the province before losing in the semifinals to Victoria’s Mount Douglas. “We didn’t know how to handle it.” The Knights take on Coquitlam’s Centennial Centaurs on Friday, 7:30 p.m., at Burnaby Lake before finishing the regular season against Lord Tweedsmuir in Surrey on Oct. 26, and West Vancouver on Nov. 2.

Capilano crushes Burnaby Lake
The Simon Fraser University Clan had their two-game football winning streak come to an abrupt halt last Saturday. The Central Washington Wildcats defeated the Clan 51-10 in Ellensburg, Wash., to drop SFU’s record to 3-4 overall and 2-4 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The Wildcats defence held GNAC passing leader Trey Wheeler of Simon Fraser to just 146 yards passing. He completed 14 of 37 throws with one interception and one touchdown, a 45-yard toss to Lemar Durant. Bo Palmer was the Clan’s top rusher with 99 yard on 11 carries. SFU’s defence was led by Eric Murphy with 11 tackles and former New Westminster Hyack Casey Chin with 10. CWU running back Demetrius Sumler, however, scored five touchdowns and ran for 226 yards on 30 carries against that defence. The Clan will play host to the Western Oregon Wolves at Terry Fox Field on Saturday at 2 p.m. • SFU men’s soccer halfback Ryan Dhillon was named GNAC offensive player of the week for scoring two goals and assisting on another in two games last week.
The defending Rugby BC Premier League champion Capilano Rugby Club scored 18 points in the second half to down the visiting rival Burnaby Lake Rugby Club 21-9 last Saturday. Burnaby led 6-3 after the first half on a pair of Admir Cejvanovic penalty kicks. He added a third in the second half. “Weather was certainly the equalizer and it was competitive, just as we knew it would be,” said Burnaby head coach Kris de Scossa in a press release. “I think [Saturday’s game] showed we had only played one game coming in and that was Capilano’s fourth of the season.” Capilano is in first place with a 3-1 record while Burnaby, who will play host to the University of Victoria Vikings (1-2) on Saturday (2:45 p.m.) is 1-1. In first division play last Saturday, Capilano defeated BLRC 8-5, while the Burnaby Lake women’s tier one squad downed Capilano 25-5.

Tien Sher brings micro suites to Surrey
Striking the right Balance Surrey will soon be home to the smallest condominiums in Canada with the opening of Balance, a new development in Surrey City Centre built by Tien Sher. The four-storey building will hold 56 suites, ranging from 290 to 653 square feet and starting at $109,900. “Real estate prices in the Lower Mainland are among the richest in North America,” says Tien Sher president Charan Sethi. “We wanted to build suites that renters could afford to purchase – today.” Even with their small size, the condos (called micro suites) at Balance will include beautiful features such as
stainless-steel appliances, hardwood floors and a private balcony. “Balance is unique,” says Sethi. “No suite comes with a parking stall but they are available for purchase. A 2012 parking study we commissioned showed most purchasers will forego car ownership and its associated costs, in favour of an affordable home purchase.
