Open fires permitted Effective now, campfires and all open fires will be permitted across the Southeast Fire Centre’s jurisdiction, due to a decreased risk of wildfires. Anyone lighting a Category 3 fire must first obtain a burn registration number by calling 1-888-797-1717 and must comply with air quality control legislation. A Category 3 fire is a fire that burns: material piled more than two metres in height or three metres in width; or stubble or grass over more than 2,000 square metres; or more than two piles of any size. A person who lights a fire must have sufficient personnel, water and tools on hand to stop the fire from escaping. The rescinding of this prohibition applies to all BC Parks, Crown and private lands, but does not apply within the boundaries of local governments that have forest fire prevention bylaws and are serviced by a fire department. Please check with civic authorities for any restrictions before lighting a fire. The Southeast Fire Centre extends from

Recently the Government of Canada approved some temporary foreign Chinese workers to come to BC to help take an underground coal sample from NE BC. Both the Mining Association of Canada and the Mining Association of BC have indicated there is a dire shortage of workers with the skills and experience to work in an underground coal mine.
If these temporary foreign workers had been allowed by the federal government to build this mine and work indefinitely, I would be vigorously opposed. However, they are only permitted to come in long enough to take a bulk sample of underground coal. A matter of months, not years. If the bulk sample gives the mining company the results they need, hopefully they will make a decision to build this coal mine. Then, BC will have a reason to invest in training workers specifically for underground coal mining. These temporary foreign workers have the skills BC needs to take that bulk sample and to move this project forward so that good new jobs and the spin-off benefits for British Columbians are created.

Canadian and American farmers are stepping up to the challenge Submitted
A great deal of determination is required to be a small farmer these days. Those who believe in small-scale farming and who have no desire to compete with industrial enterprises must be very creative in order to avoid bankruptcy or emotional depression. A brutal situation A great deal of investment is required in order to turn a profit in agriculture — three to five times more than for commercial or industrial enterprises. It is no surprise, then, that real profits for small farms remain low. The
causes are many and include the uncertainties of the profession, insufficient markets, inflation, combined with weather problems, the uncertainties of world markets for agricultural products, financial pressures, and competition from much larger or industrial-sized producers. It begs the question: how can small farmers earn a decent income when they are so in debt and subject to such unpredictable revenues? Small farmers suffer from the uncertainty of the future when they cannot benefit from a protected market and quotas, as in the
Canadian system of supply management for milk, poultry, and eggs. But the price of buying a milk quota drags down new farmers by increasing farm prices altogether. There is little incentive to invest and grow to a more competitive size. On top of that, farmers often feel isolated. The lack of solidarity in the agricultural world is a generational phenomenon that has developed with today’s fierce competition. The permanent risk of bankruptcy, the burden of debt, the difficulty in finding workers, and the impossibility of taking vacations often
lead to depression and high stress levels. The latter is no small hindrance: the social and economic cost of stress is great, representing millions or even billions of dollars in health care. Bankruptcy is often avoided only because of moonlight-
ing and the outside income of a spouse. Optimism for the future The “buy local” movement, which is expanding rapidly, is creating new markets. Nearly 150,000 farms in the U.S.A. sell their products directly to the

Annual CFUW Artisan Bazaar promises fantastic local artworks Submitted
Saturday, November 3rd at 10 a.m. marks the opening of the 27th annual Artisan Bazaar hosted by the Cranbrook Club of the Canadian
Federation of Women. “We are rather excited although at this point, there is still a lot of work to do, admitted Bazaar Chair, Cathryn Henley. “We have 30 East Kootenay artisans slated to
go, 17 of which are new to our bazaar. It is exciting for me; I have a list of what I need to buy for family and friends. Each year is different, with this one offering Doukhabor borscht
we’re all ears!
You’re Invited! Agricultural Plan Open Houses
You are invited to join us at our upcoming Agricultural Plan Open Houses. There will be seven evenings in all, led by our consultant Dave Struthers to create conversations around agriculture in the region. And, we want to hear from you! Dave will be sharing information on the 2011 Agricultural Land Use Inventory, and looking to learn more about your vision for the future of agriculture in the East Kootenay and how to work toward that vision. Although we recognize the impact the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) and Agricultural Land Commission policies have on agriculture in our region, we do not intend to focus on the merits of the ALR or operation of the ALC. The changes being undertaken by the ALC will be led by the Commission and are not part of the Agricultural Plan process.
The next Open Houses will be held: Thursday, October 25, 2012 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm Wasa Community Hall 6145 Wasa School Road, Wasa
Monday, October 29, 2012 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm Wycliffe Exhibition Grounds 5325 Staples Road, Wycliffe
Meetings will also be held in Hosmer, Jaffray, Grasmere, Invermere and Brisco in November. Visit www.ekag.ca for meeting dates, times and locations.

We are most grateful for the support of the local artisans for choosing our Bazaar to showcase their creations and certainly encourage all Cranbrook and area residents to come out and support these local crafters. “It is a circle type gift from the community and back again,â€? explained Henley. “The crafters support our club, we in turn support the women in our community, and they support the artisans who can then afford to support us next year!â€? Dispelling myths about the much-maligned bat by Juliet Craig
As Halloween approaches, bats with bloody teeth or scary green eyes become more common conjuring up images of blood-sucking, dirty, aggressive creatures. Educators trained by the Kootenay Community Bat Project (KCBP) are gearing up to dispel these myths to students in the Columbia Basin. “Bats are actually very shy, clean creatures” says Juliet Craig, Coordinating Biologist for the KCBP. “They are extremely beneficial in eating nocturnal flying insects including mosquitoes, and cycling nutrients from wetlands to upland forests”. Craig trained a group of talented, keen educators last spring so they would have the tools and information to provide school programs on bats during Halloween. In partnership with Wild Voices for Kids, the educators will be offering free school programs to teach children about the amazing worlds of bats including their unique features, their role in ecosystems, and our local bat species. Students will get a virtual tour of bats from around the world, eavesdrop on their echolocation calls, and explore current issues in bat conservation. “Of the sixteen species of bats in BC, half of them are considered vulnerable or threatened and an additional species, the little brown myotis, has recently been assessed for federal Endangered status” says Craig. “Bats need all the help they can get including more positive press, and school programs can help do that.” The Kootenay Community Bat Project, which began in 2004, has just wrapped up another year of identifying local bat species, providing educational programs and workshops, and assisting landowners with bat issues. Funded by the Columbia Basin Trust, the KCBP has provided over 400 visits to local residents, and identified over 300 roost sites for seven bat species. In addition, with funding from the Public Conservation Assistance Fund, the KCBP is paying for bat-house materials for residents who would like to build

Gregarious Gardener by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet
Protect your investment
Maybe you've raked the leaves, lifted the summer bulbs and harvested the rest of your vegetables, but one item on your list of fall chores that should not be overlooked is getting your trees and shrubs ready for the winter months. For most gardeners, trees and shrubs are the biggest plant investments they have made in their yard. So proper winter care for these plants will go a long way in protecting that investment and ensure it will pay dividends in years to come. Watering is still one of the main tasks when it comes to caring for your trees and shrubs. Continue to water all woody plants, especially any newly planted trees, shrubs and evergreens. Water them well until the ground freezes and all through a dry fall. This is especially true for evergreens and broad-leaf evergreens. These plants don’t lose their leaves, so they need a good store of moisture going into winter. In this area, we experience a lot of wind, which in turn causes the plants to transpire or give off water vapour. Most winter damage to evergreens doesn't actually come from the cold, but more from the drying effects of late winter sun and wind. Once the soil is frozen hard, plant roots can no longer take up water to make up for moisture losses from transpiration. This can result in dehydration which in turn can cause browning or burning of foliage. Therefore, make sure this foliage is well hydrated going into winter, prior to freeze up. One nice big drink before freeze-up will also help create an ice ball around the roots of your tree or shrub and this is excellent winter root protection. In our area some people like to wrap their evergreens with burlap which helps in moisture retention as well as acts as deer protection. However, if deer are not an issue, a well watered evergreen does not need to be wrapped and evergreens are nice to look at in the winter. An exception to this rule is the Dwarf Alberta Spruce. This tree is very prone to winter burn and should always be wrapped. It is always a good idea to wrap any newly planted evergreens as their roots may not have had time to take up enough moisture. If your plant gets salt spray from the road, use a double layer of burlap to help protect it. However, remember to never wrap a tree or shrub in plastic as they can “cook” on sunny days. Evergreens also benefit from being treated with an anti-desiccant. This is a waxy substance that, mixed with water and sprayed on an evergreen, will seal the needles to stop transpiration and halt the drying out process. At Top Crop’s nursery, we treat all evergreens with anti-desiccant and we recommend this product for home use as well, especially when it comes to topiaries, cedars, Dwarf Alberta Spruce and rhododendrons. Applying a layer of mulch over the root area can also help retain moisture. As a rule, spread mulch about 2 to 4 inches deep in a diameter as large as the branches spread. This not only helps to protect the feeder roots, it also recycles nutrients directly to these roots. Composted bark is a great mulch. Slightly heavier than straight peat moss, it has a tendency to stay put better and not blow away. It does break down over time, and this adds organic material to your soil. Try to avoid using straw as a mulch as it attracts rodents which may cause destruction to your trees. Speaking of rodents - another product I find useful in the winter is the plastic tree spiral. Easy to put on, it offers protection against mice girdling your tree trunk in the snowy winter months. Tree spirals are especially good with fruit trees as they seem to be a mouse favourite. They also offer summer protection to your trees from weed-eaters and lawn mowers. Another good idea is to “tie up” branches on upright cedars and junipers with twine to help prevent breakage from snow. So, with winter approaching, remember to: water until freeze-up, apply a good layer of mulch, protect against rodents, and wrap what needs it.Your trees and shrubs will appreciate it and repay your kindness next season with increased vigour. Until next time... happy gardening. Submitted by Tara

Shopping locally means your dollars stay within your community The start of a new school year is the perfect occasion to give your children a short lesson that will be a good investment in the local economy. Make the most of the back to school shopping blitz to raise your children’s awareness of the many benefits of shopping locally. There’s only one con-
dition for turning this intensive training into a resounding success: you just have to buy all school supplies and clothing items from businesses near you. When shopping with your children at local stores for stationery, books, school bags, clothes, shoes, sporting equipment, and elec-
tronics, mention to your kids that when local people frequent these stores they are helping to create jobs and incomes for others in their town. Bring to your children’s attention the fact that if these businesses remain profitable, one day they might be the source of a summer job
or even, at a later date, a full-time job that will allow them to stay in the town they grew up in. If your children have busy schedules, they’ll appreciate that shopping close to home will save lots of travelling time. If they’re keen environmentalists, make them aware
of the fact that buying local helps to reduce greenhouse gases, not to mention all the money you’ll save on gas. Best of all, financial savings could trickle down to them in the form of pocket money. That will help them get the message!

Everything for the holidays—bought right here
Making the choice to support your local economy by buying local makes sense all year round, but it is especially important to do at Christmas time. Buying local allows
you to give unique gifts while making sure that the businesses run by your neighbours can stay alive. Hostess gifts, such as baskets of delicious local products or items created by local
artisans, are particularly charming. And when entertaining, you’ll be sure to impress your guests by featuring the tastiest and most unusual products of your area. By doing this you’ll be encouraging local producers and limiting the greenhouse gas emissions generated by the transportation of products. Buying local is also advantageous in the family gift-giving department. Just think about the prohibitive price of
the gas you’d need to go on shopping trips to the big malls and faraway city centres, never mind having to return to these places to exchange unsuitable gifts. Indeed, for clothing, choose gifts from stores closer to home so that if the size isn’t right or your teenager doesn’t agree with your tastes in style, you won’t have to go far to remedy the problem once the holidays are over. Promoting the prosperity of local busi-
nesses also means maintaining employment levels or even creating new jobs for yourself, your neighbours, and young adults. When you support the businesses that make the goods you buy and the stores that sell them, it means lower unemployment rates, greater purchasing power, and a more tightly knit community. So, as Christmas approaches, give your community and yourself the most beautiful gift of all: buy local.

Team Evolution Tae Kwon Do brings home the hardware from Trail phy teachings and the art of Tae Kwon-Do. When you walk through the doors at 120 – 7th Avenue South in Cranbrook, you will find a fun and friendly environment, open to all ages and all levels of fitness, interest and skill. Simon especially encourages adults to explore his club, as many of his Black Belt Club members are mature adults who entered the sport in the name of fitness – and quickly discovered the limitlessness of their own potential, through Simon’s passionate guidance and instruction. Evolution is happy to offer a free, one-week trial for anyone interested in discovering the sport. Simon’s

Team Evolution proudly displays its October 13th, 2012 tournament winnings. From left to right are: Jenny Wachon (18) - Silver in ladies sparring; Tyson Hirscher - Gold in under-18 men’s sparring, and silver in Team Sparring; Master Simon Wachon – Bronze in top-level Black Belt patterns, and gold in Team Sparring; Jonny White – Gold in under-18 men’s patterns, Silver in under-18 men’s sparring, and Bronze in team sparring; Rene Kowalchuk – Bronze in men’s patterns, Silver in men’s sparring, and Gold for his 13-foot leap of faith into a flying side-kick; and Rhiannon Kowalchuk, 7, with her first bronze medal, for the youth pattern event. The Six Tenets of Evolution Tae Kwon Do - Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, SelfControl, Indomitable Spirit and Modesty - are the cornerstones of Master Simon Wachon’s Evolution Martial Arts academy, in Cranbrook. And this past weekend, those tenets proved the pinnacle of the club’s pride and success, as he and five of his students attended the Tae Kwon Do tournament in Trail, BC, hosted by Mr. Jason Ayles’ of Tail Martial Arts, where over 60 students and 20 black belts of all ages and degrees traveled from Chilliwack, Kelowna,
Kamloops, Cranbrook and Calgary to compete in both patterns and sparring events. The competition was vast, but above all – fun and friendly; and Master Wachon’s indomitable team earned twelve medals for Team Evolution in the event. Simon Wachon - a Sixth-Degree Black Belt Tae Kwon Do Master, originally hails from Chard, in Somerset, England, where he owned and operated seven Evolution Dojangs in various locations. It was a family vacation to the Kootenays that eventually inspired their permanent move to the
region, where he continues to grow Evolution’s Canadian success. Alongside his wife, Diane, his daughters Cayleigh (3rd degree black belt, co-instructor) and Jennifer (Black stripe, co-instructor), and a dedicated team of leaders, Evolution Martial Arts opened its doors in Cranbrook, in 2010. Since then, Evolution has grown a powerful new crop of up-andcoming black belts, thanks to the Black Belt Club program, wherein students are coached and mentored in the virtues of the six tenets as they hone their skills in self defense, fitness, philoso-

Rita Moir will be at the Cranbrook Public Library for a presentation of her latest book tonight. The history of the Slocan Valley is synonymous with the people who have travelled through it, enjoyed its abundant resources and built their homes and communities there. Rita Moir, who has made her home in the valley since 1975, is one of those people. Moir presents her beautiful book of image and essay, The Third Crop: A personal and historical journey into the photo albums and shoeboxes of the Slocan Valley 1800s to early 1940s, at the Cranbrook Public Library on Friday, October 19 at 6:30 pm. In The Third Crop, Moir embarks on a personal journey through memorabilia found in private albums, dusty shoeboxes, and community archives, skill-
fully and passionately recounting the stories of an era that was pivotal in forming the character of the Valley. More than 160 historic photographs are beautifully juxtaposed with contemporary images of the valley. The Third Crop is Moir’s fourth book. Survival Gear (Polestar, 1994), Buffalo Jump: A Woman’s Travels (Coteau, 1999), The Windshift Line: A Father and Daughter’s Story (Greystone, 2005), have all been shortlisted for or have won awards, including B.C.’s Hubert Evans award. One Book, One Kootenay (OBOK), a project of the Kootenay Library Federation, is a region-wide book club that celebrates the work of the talented writers living in the Koote-
nay Boundary. Each year a committee puts forth a shortlist of three books written by Kootenay authors. One of those books, The Third Crop, was selected by residents throughout the Kootenay/Boundary, who casted their votes at local public libraries. For more information go to the Kootenay Library Federation website at obok.ca, where you can find out more about the author, The Third Crop, and a schedule of Rita Moir’s OBOK tour. Justin’s Song
Although that I did not make it home, When my car came to rest, I was not alone. I was guarded by the pines so tall, Whispering softly, they watched me fall. The earth, she cradled me in her arms. The night creatures soothed me with their charms. Don’t worry about where I came to rest, In this forest is a place that I loved best. When your heart is full of pain, Take a walk there and with you I’ll be again. Listen closely, I am not too far away, My laughter is in the rustling leaves each day. As you walk along a path among the trees. My breath you’ll smell on the Autumn freeze. My tears of joy and sorrow will fall again, They will touch the earth with each spring rain. Although I left you and I know In your hearts there is a large black hole. It can be mended ¿ll it please, Fill it up with love and my memories Although I did not make it home, I did not leave you all alone. Fir in your hearts Ill always be, And your love Ill take with me.
Miss you forever Mom, Dad, Stacey
