Protest over B.C. pipeline hits Nanaimo BY TOBY GORMAN THE NEWS BULLETIN
CHRIS BUSH/THE NEWS BULLETIN
Firefighters stabilize a Nissan Sentra after it crashed into an apartment building at 1500 Boundary Cr. Wednesday. Emergency crews said the incident happened at about 4 p.m. when the Nissan, northbound on Boundary, collided with a GMC SUV eastbound on Graham Crescent that allegedly lost its brakes. The woman driving the Nissan was checked out by paramedics. The woman driving the SUV, and a couple watching TV in the apartment struck by the Nissan – which shattered the sliding glass doors to their living room – were also uninjured. Police are investigating.

More than 40 communities in British Columbia will participate in a provincewide rally to show growing public opposition to Enbridge’s proposed Northern Gateway pipeline. In Nanaimo, a rally is scheduled outside Nanaimo NDP MLA Leonard Krog’s office, 4-77 Victoria Cres., on Wednesday (Oct. 24) at noon. The original Defend Our Coast rally, set for Monday (Oct. 22) in Victoria, is being organized by the Dogwood Initiative with the help of Leadnow.ca, an independent advocacy group working to improve democracy. It is expected to be the largest act of peaceful civil disobedience on the oil sands issue in Canada, according to organizers. Barb Kohlman, organizer for the Nanaimo rally, said the goal is to encourage government to pass legislation that would not allow for an increase in oil tankers on the B.C. coast as well as generate public awareness on the issue. “That’s the whole gist of this,” said Kohlman. “The pipeline won’t go ahead if there aren’t any tankers coming to get the bitumen.” Kohlman added that environmental risks posed by the pipeline and increased tanker traffic is a threat to all coastal communities. “Would it affect us here in Nanaimo? You bet it would,” she said. “I was recently in Tofino gathering 1,700 signatures for a petition. They get it there. If there is a spill, Tofino becomes a ghost town. No whale watching, no fishing, nothing.” Krog said that the NDP is categorically against any pipeline spanning B.C. “The NDP is opposed to the building of the pipeline,” said Krog. “We see significant risks to already valuable resources, it could be and probably will be an environmental disaster, with very little, if any, fiscal upside.” He added that if the NDP were to attain power in May, the party would “do everything reasonably and legally possible to ensure that the pipeline is not built.” ◆ See ‘PEOPLE’ /2

◆ From /1 A recent resolution narrowly passed at September’s Union of British Columbia Municipalities called for Premier Christy Clark and Opposition New Democrat leader Adrian Dix to use legislative powers to prevent oil tanker expansion on B.C.’s coast. Enbridge responded by saying that over the past quarter-century more than 1,500 vessels carrying petrochemicals have safely navigated in and out of the waters near Kitimat. Enbridge is currently before a Joint Review Panel in Prince George defending its environmental record. According to a release issued by Leadnow.ca, the Defend Our Coast day of action is being endorsed by more than 80 community, union, business and Aboriginal leaders, including the David Suzuki Foundation, former Canadian UN ambassador Stephen

“People from all walks of life – First Nations, ranchers, fishermen, business owners, foresters, teachers – are stepping up and coming together like never before to form a wall of opposition and call on our provincial leaders to defend our coast.” Kohlman said participants, of which she is expecting 70 to 80, will link arms to symbolize the citizens of B.C.’s unbroken wall of opposition to Enbridge’s Northern Gateway project. ‘Big one’ rattles RDN 50% OFF BY TOBY GORMAN THE NEWS BULLETIN
Thousands of people across the Regional District of Nanaimo dropped, took cover and held on when ‘the big one’ hit Thursday morning at 10:18 a.m. During the Great British Columbia ShakeOut Drill, a simulated earthquake event designed to get people in the habit of taking cover should the real thing happen, 597,604 people took part provincewide while 23,012 participated in Nanaimo. Few, however, felt the urgency as much as people at the RDN offices on Hammond Bay Road. Jani Drew, emerg ency coordinator for the RDN, said the drill there is ramped up to create a real life emergency with giant speakers set up outside broadcasting an emergency announcement, the sound of breaking glass and deep rumbling. “It made the drill seem very realistic, said Drew. “It was loud, windows shook, partitions shook because of the big subwoofers. People felt a little bit
of imagined urgency. It made them think ‘what could be falling on me right now?’ The drill didn’t stop there. People evacuated the building, a head count was taken, Red Cross volunteers played members of the public who were missing within the building, and search wardens had to find victims during the emergency sweep. “We put some twists and turns in there, said Drew. “One person was located in a washroom, and some doors that normally would have been used had signs on them saying a tree had fallen against it and it can’t be opened. So not just to follow written procedure but to think on your feet. Next year we’ll ramp it up a bit more. The RDN’s offices weren’t the only facility to take part. Transit buses pulled over at 10:18 a.m. and broadcast the drill to passengers, who were encouraged to drop, cover and hold on. Workers at treatment plants did the same, and an aquafit class at Ravensong Aquatic Centre learned what
action to take while in a pool. Across Nanaimo, schools, businesses and municipal offices also participated. “The more we practise, the more people will know what to do more quickly and protect ourselves more quickly from potential falling objects, said Drew. The RDN recently registered as a Resilient City on the United Nations Strategic Disas-
ter Reduction Resilient Cities campaign, a program designed to limit damage and injury during a disaster and improve emergency response and recovery afterward. Net zero mandate a big role in disruptions ◆ From /1 “These two goals will require compromise on all sides of the table, including ours,” said Clark. BCTF president Susan Lambert said she welcomes the review of the bargaining structure, but is skeptical about the latest promise of meaningful consultation. “It seems to me that talk of a 10-year contract is putting the cart before the horse,” Lambert said. “There seems to be conclusions drawn that would be properly a product of the bargaining table and not a product of a discussion on the bargaining structure.” The offer comes as the BCTF continues a court challenge to a twoyear wage freeze that extends until June 2013. After a year of fruitless
negotiations and work-to-rule by teachers, the union membership endorsed the two-year contract extension reached in June with government-imposed mediator Charles Jago. Justin Green, president of the Nanaimo District Teachers’ Association, said the union welcomes any consultation on bargaining structure, but if the province wants to build relationships with teachers, it can start by giving teachers back language that was stripped from contracts 10 years ago. Last year, a B.C. Supreme Court judge ruled parts of the 2002 legislation that removed certain working and learning conditions clauses, such as limits on class size
and the number of special needs students in each class from teachers’ collective agreements, violated teachers’ rights to freedom of association under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The court gave the province a year to fix it. The union interpreted this decision to mean that these clauses would be returned to their contracts, but last spring, the province came out with Bill 22, which kept these limits in legislation until next July, when teachers once again have the right to bargain them. Green said when two parties meet more than 70 times and aren’t able to come to an agreement, the system is broken, but the man-
date played a big role in this – the employers came to the table with a net zero mandate. “I’m optimistic they’re at least willing to talk about it,” he said. “But based on the history of this government, I’m cynical. What I sincerely hope doesn’t happen is we do a six-week consult and have something legislated and rammed through.” Jamie Brennan, school board chairman, said last year the system was disrupted by teacher job action for the entire year because the province had previously taken away the right to strike, tipping the scales slightly in favour of the province. But he is hopeful that the province can come up with a better system.
McRae said the review will take advantage of work currently being done by a task force of school trustees, and two previous reviews completed by independent mediators. McRae said he has talked with Lambert about the proposal, and he wants to have consultations with teachers, trustees, parent advisory councils and administrators complete by the end of November. “If there are policy changes or legislative amendments that we need to make, we want to get this work done before bargaining resumes next spring,” McRae said. – with files from Jenn McGarrigle editor@nanaimobulletin.com

MLA suggests ferry passengers change travelling ways Ron Cantelon isn’t happy about increased ferry rates and cuts to service, and he has some suggestions for riders. The Parksville-Qualicum MLA says the 12 per cent spike in costs over the next three years was inevitable because of ever-rising fuel costs. “It’s not just here, it’s a worldwide phenomenon, he said. Noting the price of gasoline had jumped to $1.37.9 cents per litre in Nanaimo last week, Cantelon said rising ferry costs shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. “We put in $80 million and we are asking ferries to do their part too, he said. Cantelon said there is only so much government can do and it may be time for people to start thinking about changing the way they use the service. “We have to look at different options, he said. “Maybe the idea of a single car going back and forth over 35 miles of water isn’t the way to go. Maybe people are going to look more and more at passenger service and then pick up a rental car on the other side. Although gasoline prices aren’t expected to come down substantially any time soon, Cantelon said there may be at least some relief on the horizon. “We hope when they put the natural gas on the big ferries that will moderate the costs and hopefully bring the costs down, he said. B a r r y Av i s, t h e NDP nominee to run against Cantelon in the next provincial election, said the rise in costs should get people thinking about the ferries, but he sees the question differently. “There has to be a recognition of what the ferries are all about, he said. “Are they meant to be a cruise liner? Are they for residential use? For

is all about – who it’s trying to serve. Maybe that understanding hasn’t been clear over the last few years.

“It’s hurting tourism and our local people, he said. “I sometimes travel to the smaller islands such as Cor-
tes, and people would say they used to go to Campbell River a couple of times a week but now they only go once.

NCDC ‘Opening Doors’ for children with needs Imagine a group of children being carefree, content, and exuberant gathered around one another, laughing, communicating and playing. Or perhaps picture a young toddler taking his first step – imagine for a moment the look on his face or his parent’s feeling of joy. That step is a powerful metaphor. It represents change, improvement, ambition, and most importantly hope! Hope that through their child
obtaining the therapy and support they need that they will grow to their optimum development. This step is ‘Opening Doors’. Since 1967, the Nanaimo Child Development Centre (NCDC) has been ‘Opening Doors’ by providing essential services and support to children with developmental needs and their families from Ladysmith to Lantzville and mid to north island areas for specialized assessments.
Last year over 1800 children and their families received assistance at the Centre. Wonderful community support over the past few years has enabled us to decrease our waitlist from over 450 children down to 326 children and the average wait time from two years down to 9 months, a significant change! However, NO child with identified needs should have to wait for much needed services. Our challenge remains to

decrease our waitlist even further. Speech Therapy is one of our longest waitlisted programs with 90 children presently waiting up to 9 months for services. The benefits of early intervention for children with developmental needs are significant to optimize growth and development, thus, a waitlist of this magnitude counteracts this vital step.

Conference makes waves over pipelines
Flu shot campaign Greyhound bus service reduced underway on Island
The Council of Canadians is hosting a movement-building, two-day conference in Nanaimo beginning Friday (Oct. 26) that will see members from across the country gather to discuss mining and pipeline projects. Called Making Waves, the conference will bring together environmental, health, youth, First Nation and labour groups to raise awareness about issues and projects that may negatively affect the environment. Keynote speakers scheduled to appear include Maude Barlow, chairwoman of the Council of Canadians; Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, president of the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs; Linda McQuaig, journalist and author; and Bill McKibben, founder of 350.org. The public forum portion of the conference takes place from 7-9:30 p.m. at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre on Oct. 26, followed by a conference at the Coast Bastion Inn Saturday from 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. More program and registration information is available at www. canadians.org/ conference.
The annual influenza campaign gets underway across Vancouver Island next week and health officials want people to consider how to best protect themselves and their loved ones. In B.C., flu shots are free for anyone considered at high risk of developing influenza complications, as well as those who care for or live with them. Those in the high-risk category include: people over 65, people with chronic health conditions, health-care workers, emergency responders, young children, pregnant women in their third trimester, nursing home residents, Aboriginal peoples and those with a body mass index of 40 or greater.
Greyhound Canada plans to reduce bus service on Vancouver Island after the company lost several million dollars last year. Greyhound recently filed an application with the B.C. Passenger Transportation Board to reduce service on 15 routes across the province. Service between Nanaimo and
The most common complication, particularly for elderly people, is pneumonia – an infection of the lungs – and it can also lead to complications for those with heart, lung or other health conditions and even death. Influenza is easily transmitted from person to person and healthy adults who interact with people in the high-risk groups are encouraged to get their shots. New this year during flu season, health-care workers across B.C. will be either immunized or will wear a mask during patient interactions. Please visit www.viha.ca/flu to find a public health clinic.
Campbell River is one of those routes expected to take a hit. The company wants to go from a minimum of two trips per day in each direction to one trip a day leaving from Campbell River and one leaving from Nanaimo. Greyhound also has plans to abandon the seasonal ski service to Mt. Washington.

Police patrols keyy to Malahat Emergency crews call it “NASCAR Corner,” where two northbound lanes on the Malahat Drive merge to one, and where a scene of carnage played out on Sunday just before noon. For reasons that aren’t yet clear, a southbound Honda SUV veered into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with a pickup truck. Three Nanaimo women in the Honda died and five other people were injured. Under pressure from a growing death toll and a vocal campaign by safety activists in the Cowichan Valley, the provincial government has committed about $8 million to install 5.4 kilometres of concrete barriers in high-crash areas of the Malahat by the spring of next year. Barriers, as useful as they are to curb head-on collisions, are only part of the solution to creating a much safer mountain highway pass between Victoria and Cowichan. Geographical limits and high costs prevent substantially widening the roadway or building another route around the Malahat. The highway we have now is the road we’re stuck with for the foreseeable future. That leaves the solution of lining the road with barriers and ramping up law enforcement. Creating a dedicated Malahat police patrol was recommended by the Capital Regional District’s Integrated Road Safety Unit, which mounted a concentrated, daily campaign to crack down on speeders, and drunk and distracted drivers during the summer of 2011. So far, funding a permanent patrol is an expense the police and province aren’t willing to foot. Even if this latest crash wasn’t speedrelated, it’s another reminder that the highway can be dangerous, and the transportation route can be severed in an instant, often for hours. With closures, fatalities and crashes, over the long run, the most cost-effective option is full-time patrols on the Malahat. The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, 201 Selby St., Nanaimo, B.C. V9R 2R2. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org
Border guards crucial to our safety A border guard was shot in the neck at the Peace Arch border crossing Tuesday afternoon. This is the first incident to my knowledge of a Canadian border guard being shot at, since the federal government announced its plan to arm border guards in 2007. Shortly after that announcement, there was another shooting at Peace Arch. On that occasion, guards were alerted that an armed individual was on the way north and U.S. officials were involved in a shootout that concluded near the boundary. At the Peace Arch crossing, unlike most Canadian border crossings, the Canadian inspection booths and buildings are a bit to the north of the actual boundary, as Peace Arch Park takes up the space right at the border and surrounding the arch. Thus, an armed individual who is on the way north traverses a small portion of Canada before encountering inspectors. A shooting like this is the most horrific outcome that anyone could expect at their workplace, but border guards do have a more difficult job than most of us. While the vast majority of the
people they deal with are not a problem, a small but significant number are. In this day and age of easily accessible information, guards have far more information at their fingertips than used to be the case. If there is any reason to be suspicious of either an individual or vehicle, more questions are asked. Some Americans do travel with handguns, and while most are simply uninformed about Canada’s gun laws, there are a tiny number who are ready to shoot when challenged. When I worked for Customs more than 30 years ago, we did run into handguns on rare occasions. In most cases, they were carried by truckers who were making their first trip to Canada, or were U.S. residents on the way to Alaska. At that time, they were allowed to bring their guns into Canada for transport to Alaska under certain conditions. While customs and immigration officers were occasionally threatened, in almost all cases people did settle down after being warned. In rare cases when they didn’t, the RCMP were called and they usually arrived very quickly. The Peace Arch crossing is officially known as Douglas in

Canada Border Services Agency circles. Of the three crossings I worked at, it was my least favourite. The volume of travellers was high, particularly on weekends. The variety of work was limited, as there were no commercial shipments, and we seemed to get a higher proportion of people who raised red flags. This was likely because the crossing is right on Interstate 5/ Highway 99, and most travellers ended up there by default, as opposed to the truck crossing a short distance to the east. For certain, the immigration officers who did the in-depth questioning of foreign nationals whose cases raised additional questions were much busier there. They had to deal with some challenging cases every day. Working at the border is more challenging than it was, and guards have to use discretion and judgment on a split-second basis. I have nothing but respect for the work they do. While they don’t get positive comments from Canadians very often, they are crucial in keeping our country safe. ◆ Frank Bucholtz is the editor of the Langley Times, a Black Press newspaper.

Adults’ role is to protect children To the Editor, Once again we see tragic results of school-aged bullies. Fifteen-year-old Amanda Todd was bullied and moved to three different schools to avoid the abuse she suffered at the hands of cyber bullies. Many people who have seen her YouTube post telling her story before taking her own life, put the blame, or at least some of it, on this child. Amanda made a bad
mistake. She admitted it, apologized, owned it and took responsibility for her actions. Her so-called peers were unable to show the same kind of courage she did, by standing up for her, or supporting her. Oct. 10 was World Mental Health Day, and Oct. 11 International Day to Recognize Women, and still we see children killing themselves as a solution to the abuse they suffer, or being shot by the Taliban on a school bus for having
the courage to stand up for one’s self. We cannot expect children to understand on their own the damage inflicted by bullying, but we can teach them right from wrong. We can break the cycle of bullying that, usually, comes from their homes and families, by teaching them to speak out against bullying when they see it happening. We can set good examples by calling a person, whether known to us or
not, on bullying and, in the case of employees, hold them accountable for allowing abuse to continue unchecked. These are our children. We all have a role to play in protecting them. We all have to take responsibility, and play a role in stopping this horrible crime against children and adults. Bill Bard trustee Nanaimo school district

Political will could solve deer population woes To the Editor, Would someone please explain to the general population the purpose of the urban vermin commonly known as deer? Are these animals a food source for humans? No. Are they an essential part of the environment? No. Many people go to great expense and effort to keep their yards, farms, etc., nice only to have these pests destroy their work. I do not understand the thinking of our powers that be to protect these nuisances. I’m sure if the country was overrun with rats, or other vermin, there would be no hesitation to eliminate them. There are those who will say deer are cute and were here first. I call them a traffic hazard. And I have lived in the same house for 41 years and don’t believe any deer have lived that long. So, I was here before them. I understand conservation officers and animal services people are only carrying out orders
from politicians, so it’s time the politicians quit sitting on their hands and did something about deer overpopulation. Taxpayers are fed up. Let’s do something. Art Dowsell Nanaimo
Pioneer status too confusing To the Editor, Re: Pioneer purchase was waste of cash, Letters, Oct. 18. I, too, am in support of retaining Pioneer Park for the well-being of residents of the City of Nanaimo. Since this park is supposed to revert to the province in case it would not remain parkland, it only stands to reason that it remain a park. I understand that the city has done some recent upgrades to the park, while paying rent to the school board – an investment that also would be best maintained. If the city trades some land of similar value with the school board, does this mean it pays a lot more than the $1 it originally paid the province for

the parkland? Perhaps it would be better that the land simply return to the province and remain a park. Taxpayers need some clarity on how and why these decisions were made. The situation is bizarre and baffling. Lavonne Garnett Nanaimo
Ferry subsidy ruins islanders To the Editor, Re: Citizens keep B.C. Ferries afloat, Letters, Oct. 16. If Jeremy Baker would look at his arithmetic from the
other side, he would get a very different picture. The $5.7-million revenue on the M.V. Quinsam, shared equally by the 5,000 residents of Gabriola Island (in the same misleading way that Baker apportions subsidies) amounts to $114,000 per person per year. Who else in B.C. – who else in the world – is forced to pay so much to get to and from their homes? Harold Stetler Gabriola Island
Senior staff rule council To the Editor, Re: Terminal Trench study backed by city council, Oct. 9. I watched a Nanaimo city council meeting at the beginning of the month with disgust. It proved senior bureaucrats are the ones running our town. On Sept. 5, the Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association wrote council asking for an advance of $225,000 – next year’s matching
city funding. The matter was not placed on the Oct. 4 council agenda until the last minute so there was no chance for scrutiny, debate or opposition from anyone. This is underhanded, undemocratic politics at its worst. City staff, along with the mayor and seven councilors, should bow their heads in disgrace. Only one councillor, Jim Kipp, spokeup, frustrated against the motion of injustice. This while councilor Diane Brennan rudely talked over him, calling for a vote. Council approved giving the DNBIA next year’s allotment even though commercial property owners have not yet voted on whether the DNBIA should even exist beyond June. City manager Al Kenning even had the audacity to dictate to council that he believed they were “committed to funding the BIA through 2013.” This is far from democracy. R.C. Stearman Nanaimo

Origami an environmental statement The Sierra Club Nanaimo is building a three-dimensional petition in support of an oil-free coast and healthy clean energy options for Vancouver Island communities. The club invites the public to take part in a communal effort to fold 1,000 paper cranes as part of its Folding in Clean Energy initiative Thursday (Oct. 25) at the Wellington Library on Barons Road. People are encouraged to drop in between 6-8 p.m. to fold an origami crane, learn about clean energy and collectively voice
their hopes for a better future through a visual demonstration of their wishes. In Japanese tradition, origami cranes represent a wish or intention for health and well-being. The cranes will be mounted on a canvas depicting B.C.’s coastline and presented to local governments encouraging elected representatives to oppose pipeline and supertanker expansion in B.C.’s coastal waters and work toward clean energy solutions. “B.C.’s economy and environment are threatened by two

How can I prevent getting sick this winter?
There are several things you can do to improve the immune system and prevent DR. TONIA WINCHESTER coming down with the seasonal cold or flu. First I usually recommend my patients maintain proper hygiene by washing their hands frequently with ordinary soap. Next, I work with my patients on stress reduction as the stress response suppresses the immune system. There are several nutrients and herbs that can be used both preventatively and acutely. These include vitamin D, vitamin C, B complex, high-quality Echinacea, a mushroom complex, golden seal, garlic and elder berry. Despite being natural these interventions may not be safe for everyone at all times so it is best to consult with a Naturopathic Physician. Also at Arbour Wellness Centre we offer a flu prevention program for our patients every year. If you do happen to get sick stay home, get plenty of fluids and rest. Most extended health plans will cover naturopathic visits.

Raking Can Wreck Your Back.
Fall is the time for raking all those leaves, but if your spine is out of DR. KAREN MATTERN alignment, raking and sweeping can trigger acute episodes of back pain. The best way to prepare for it is to have your spine checked by your family chiropractor before you rake. A little tune-up now can help you avoid weeks of recovery from a back sprain. Alternating sides when raking can also prevent strain on one side of the back. Also, be careful when bending to pick up bundles of leaves. Always bend with the knees slightly bent and facing forward, not turned to one side. When moving, don’t twist the back. Move your feet so the whole body turns together. A few precautions can help you enjoy the season healthy and pain-free.

WOW! What a question…. First off I will say that don’t let a piece of furniture’s beauty fool ROBERT BICHLBAUER you. Manufacturers have been perfecting the art of esthetics vs quality. Professional sales associates of course can answer your questions, but do you believe them? Even though it is your money you are spending I really feel that the consumer has a responsibility to do some research and home work of their own. There is a lot of information available to us before we even step foot into a furniture store. Please do not get me wrong, there are many furniture stores that will be honest, that is why not only do you do research on the product but why not do it on the furniture store as well. Companies that have been in business for a long period of time would be a place I personally would start looking. This tells me that they are interested in building a long term relationship with their clients. Do not be afraid to ask your sales representative to turn a piece of furniture over or explain the construction. This will be a great start to helping you be more confident in deciding where best to spend your money.

What are some warning signs that I may be in financial trouble and have to consider filing for bankruptcy? GARETH SLOCOMBE, CA, CIRP Generally speaking, you should probably seek help from a bankruptcy trustee, if you are experiencing some or all of the following: • You are unable to pay the minimum on your credit card(s); • You are using credit for items you used to pay for in cash (food, gas etc ); • You are at or near your credit card limits; • You’ve consolidated your debts more than once; • You are receiving harassing phone calls from creditors; • You are stalling one creditor to pay another; This is certainly not a complete list. There may also be other options that are available other than for you to file for bankruptcy, such as filing a proposal to freeze the interest and compromise the amounts of your debts. You should also keep in mind that the earlier you deal with your financial problem, the more likely that any alternative courses of action will be available to you.

Experts’ Advice
Look. Listen. Learn.
October is Eye Health Month in Canada. Doctors of Optometry want to remind parents of the DR. PAUL GENEAU importance of thorough eye and vision examinations for their children. It is recommended that children visit their optometrist at ages 6-12 months, 3 years, and annually during their school years. A vision screening, at school or at the Health Unit, does not replace a proper optometric exam. The screenings do not assure that the eyes are healthy, or that all the vision skills are developing normally, ensuring good learning and development. Book your child’s eye exam today. No studying required!

Spitfire pilot honoured
With Remembrance Day a few weeks away, many Vancouver Island families are thinking about family members that served in the Canadian Armed Forces during the Second World War. The Neils of Nanaimo are one such family. Born in Nanaimo on Nov. 17, 1919, John William “Jack” Neil would become one of the most highly decorated fighter pilots from Vancouver Island. He flew 310 combat sorties and completed two operational tours, Neil joined the RCAF in September 1940 and during his RCAF/ RAF service, distinguished himself as a courageous, skilled and determined fighter pilot. While serving with 274 Squadron RAF in North Africa, Neil was shot down twice by enemy anti-aircraft fire. He returned to Canada in February 1944 for leave and was back in action action that July, joining the 421 RCAF Spitfire Squadron. In August 1944 over Paris, Neil’s plane was shot down and he spent the next eight months as a prisoner of war.

At the end of the war Neil was repatriated to Canada and reunited with his Nanaimo family. He would marry Lavina Irene Foster, raise a family and enjoy a long career with Nanaimo Realty. Neil died July 13, 1993 in Nanaimo. A model of Neil’s Spitfire will be added to the Vancouver Island Military Museum’s large Spitfire display on today (Oct. 20) at 1 p.m. The Neil family will be in attendance to help with the dedication and to remember his wartime service and dedication. The public is invited to the event. The Vancouver Island Military Museum is open Mondays to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 100 Cameron Rd. For more information, please call 250-7533814.

As you know, the human body is in a constant state of change, and the mouth is no exception. Although dentures are durable, they are not any more permanent than eyeglasses. Over time, the underlying tissues of the mouth change, often causing the denture to settle out of position. This can cause a change in the fit and occlusion, as well as in your appearance. As the gums shrink, upper dentures tend to go up out of sight & move back, while lower dentures tend to settle down and come forward. Thus, some people who wear the same dentures over many years develop a “bull dog” look. As a general rule, dentures should be replace every 5-7 years and relined every 2-3 years, in order to prevent deterioration of the tissues and bone and to maintain a healthy, natural smile. An annual professional consultation is very important and is provided at our clinic at no charge.

How can I help keep my child/students cybersafe?
250-758-3731
October is National Bullying Prevention month. With the recent highly publicized ANGELA SLADE, MA suicide death of British Columbian youth, Amanda Todd, cyberbullying and suicide are on many people’s minds. I received many requests for information. Five sites I recommend to help inform individuals more about cyber-safety are: • www.facebook.com/safety/ • www.tntnanaimo.com • www.imaginenobullying.ca/ • www.facebook.com/stopbullyingspeakup • www.pacerkidsagainstbullying.org/ As a counsellor and an educator, I know the importance of having conversations with your children and youth about what steps they would take if they were being bullied. I also suggest, parents ensure they are aware of their child’s school bullying policy as well as their internet usage policies. If you believe your child is being bullied or is bullying you can contact me for a session.

Let me start by saying that I am proud to work with some very experienced, knowledgeable and respected REALTORS in our City. All REALTORS are independent sales associates regardless TIM WAIT of the company they work with, so we all have the ability to decide how much time, effort and money we are going to use in order to best serve our clients. When it comes to service, I learned a lot from my years as a WOODWARD’S Food Floor clerk. Chunky Woodward’s instilled in me the desire to go beyond what was expected from our clients and always look for ways to improve, not only the experience of our clients but also to be innovative in marketing the products we sold. Perhaps you may remember the Specialty section of WOODWARD’S we even sold chocolate covered ants, the message WOODWARD’S was sending was that we go beyond what other grocery stores are offering, lest we forget the Parcel Depots where you could pick up your groceries after you finished your other Mall shopping. This was another value added service. So here’s my point, I believe that FULL SERVICE is far more than a yard sign, providing documents, making phone calls to notaries or building inspectors, my FULL SERVICE involves Staging your home to make the big first impression, Professional Digital Photography with a huge photo slideshow gallery to best show case your home and catch the attention of the buyers that start their search online. It’s almost 85%. I use several websites to market to the world not just relying on MLS, full color local newspaper ads, open houses, feature sheets on your yard sign and on and on. If you feel you could benefit from my FULL SERVICE marketing program I welcome the opportunity to discuss your situation and promise you that like WOODWARD’S my goal is to exceed your expectations. I plan to soon have all of my natural teeth extracted. Once I have my dentures, will they last for the rest of my life?
#1 is the mattress flippable? If not don’t buy it. See www. johnsbedrooms.com/johns-articles for more on that. Lynn and I just tested a mattress quilted with latex, cotton, silk, wool and we were very disappointed. The one we tested is a $4500 system, flippable and with a removable/ replaceable topper. At first glance the system looked great. In practice though all that fabric just packs and as soon as it packs there is very little air flow through it. We constantly test new items to improve our lines, after this test though I’m afraid it’s back to the drawing board.

Is there treatment for ringing in the ears? Tinnitus is noise or sound heard in the ears or head which is not from an JON WATERHOUSE, BA external source. It is described as ringing, whistling or roaring by the over 360,000 Canadians who experience it. Tinnitus is a symptom. A complete evaluation by a hearing professional is necessary and a referral to an ENT doctor may be recommended in order to rule out a medically treatable cause. There may be no cure for tinnitus but often it can be successfully managed. Counselling, diet review, stress management, masking and hearing aid use (if hearing loss is present) are all treatments available. If you have hearing loss and or tinnitus, call us today for a complimentary evaluation.

What is it you are doing when you are “notarizing” a TIAH M. WORKMAN document? Notarizing a document simply means that I have reviewed your photo identification and that I have then witnessed you signing a document. Whether you are swearing or affirming a Declaration or Affidavit, signing a travel consent letter, an oil lease or a variety of other types of documents, all such documents being witnessed by a notary public or a lawyer are generally referred to as “notarizations”.

All-stars lead V.I. in semis The V.I. Raiders looked like an all-star team for much of the 2012 season, and the team’s all-star selections bear that out. N a n a i m o ’s f i r s t placed junior football club had seven players named to the B.C. Football Conference all-star team. Raiders quar terback Jordan Yantz was selected as the BCFC’s Outstanding Offensive Player of the Year after a season in which he set a Canadian Junior Football League record with 3,243 passing yards. Yantz also shares the Outstanding Offensive Back award with Westshore Rebels tailback Greg Morris. Also winning major awards for the Raiders were Whitman Tomusiak, who was chosen as Outstanding Receiver, and Tremaine Apperley, chosen Outstanding Defensive Back. The Raiders’ other all-stars are offensive lineman Tyler Oldendorf, receiver Mike Schaper, linebacker Dylan Chapdelaine and kicker Mark Mueller. GAME ON … The Raiders play the Okanagan Sun today (Oct. 20) in the BCFC semifinals. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. at Caledonia Park. Tickets at the gate.

Bucs’ inconsistency costs them in loss BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
When the game is on the line and the pressure’s on, the Nanaimo Buccaneers play great. But what they still need to learn, perhaps, is that the game is on the line for a full 60 minutes. The city’s Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League team (6-8) lost 4-2 to the Peninsula Panthers on Thursday at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. “We outplayed them for long stretches of the game, but we just had lapses where
we’d break down and they’d capitalize,” said Derian Hamilton, Bucs player. Nanaimo jumped to a 2-0 lead on first period goals from Lynden Eddy and Jordan Levesque, but got away from the game plan. Down 3-2 to start the third, the Bucs carried the play as they pressed for the equalizer, but then got into some penalty trouble and let the game get away. Coach Brad Knight said the team didn’t play with a consistent compete level. “I’m not going to make excuses. We’ve got to start winning some games, we

can’t be young for the whole year…” he said. “Some kids I thought played real well and then I thought we had a lot of passengers, unfortunately.” Hamilton said for the Bucs to have a winning result, it will take preparation. “We’ve got to be ready to play and ready to play for the whole game,” he said. GAME ON … The Buccaneers play the Comox Valley Glacier Kings tonight (Oct. 20) up Island. On Thursday (Oct. 25) the Bucs host the Oceanside Generals in a 7:15 p.m. game at the NIC. sports@nanaimobulletin.com
The Nanaimo Clippers showed last time out that they can sure get up for a big game. The city’s B.C. Hockey League club (6-4-0-1) is coming off a 4-2 upset over the defending-champion Penticton Vees last weekend. Tonight (Oct. 20) is another big one, with Bill Bestwick’s Victoria Grizzlies (8-4-0-1) coming to Frank Crane Arena. The teams met once this season already, a game that the Clips took 4-2 in front of a buzzing crowd. Clippers forward Reid Sturos said the team does get more excited for the big games. “You always look at those games and think, OK, we’ve got to play our best,” he said. “I guess we should think that for every game, but those games you obviously get up a little more and it gets a little more intense.” Sturos said the rivalry with the Grizzlies should spark the
Clippers tonight. “We’ll come out flying with hard work and see how it goes from there,” he said. The key to slowing down the Grizz is trying to shut down Gerry, Myles and Leo Fitzgerald. “Those three are highly offensively skilled players, but it’s not just them, it’s their whole team,” said Jayson Argue, Clippers goalie. “They’ve got a good team over there so we know we have to match their work ethic and match their skill. I know that we can do that because we’ve done it before. Hopefully we’ll get the same result.” As always, the Clips worry more about their own game than their opponents’ tactics. “We’ve just got to keep playing the way we are,” said Greg Trichilo, Clippers forward. “We’re hitting kids, we’re getting shots. We’re really good on the penalty kill and … we’ll keep ’er going on the power play.” GAME ON … The Clippers and the Grizzlies face off tonight at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena. Tickets at the door. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Minor soccer keeps 1,600 players active this season Some things have changed and some remain the same, as another season of youth soccer is underway in our city. Registration for youth soccer this year is at approximately 1,600, making it one of the most popular choices for fall and winter sports. That’s hardly surprising, as soccer has always had a strong base here in Nanaimo and the relative low cost of the sport also makes it attractive. The Nanaimo and District Youth Soccer Association is the umbrella organization for this area. Under its jurisdiction are several clubs in the mid-Island, including the Nanaimo Youth Soccer Club. One thing changing this year is the rebranding of the club’s player development centre as
Harbour City FC, with tors are Rob Jakobsen a new website at www. and Ian Johnson. with no goal keepers. Similarly, there are no keepers at the U7 or U8 levels, where 19 teams in each division play four-a-side games. U9 mini-soccer involves 12 teams and the U10 division has 11 teams, both playing six-a-side with goalkeepers. Adding to the controlled chaos this year is another innovation: the youngsters play in what are called double-sided games, which means that they are actually involved in two games at once on adjacent fields. It leads to much greater involvement, more touches on the ball and double the soccer excitement for both players and fans. Eleven-a-side teams of U11 to U15 boys’ and girls’ squads play on Saturdays, using mainly the full-sized Serauxmen Sports Fields, Harry Wipper
Park, or the two artificial turf fields at Beban Park. Sundays are game days for teams in the older age divisions. Teams in the U16/18 age group usually have their matches at Harry Wipper or the artificial fields at Beban. In addition there are U13 girls’ and boys’ teams, as well as a U17 boys’ team, that compete Sundays in the Upper Island Soccer Association. Nanaimo also has a number of players at the U14, U15 and U16 levels that play in the Vancouver Island Premier League on Sundays. U18 girls and boys’ teams travel on weekends to compete in the mainland Metro League. Of course soccer season usually means rain and wet weather. But another change this year might alle-
viate that concern somewhat. Youth soccer recently came to terms with the Arbutus Meadows Equestrian Centre near Nanoose to use their covered facility for soccer practice sessions during the inclement winter months. It’s a great idea and will hope-
fully allow young players to continue training and developing skills year-round. Whatever your sport, a reminder in closing to play your hardest, play fair and show good sportsmanship. ◆ Ian Thorpe writes about sports Saturdays.
