Submitted Members of the Jaffray and Baynes Lake Fire Departments were on the scene of a fire in the Baynes Lake area last night. Approximately 15 firefighters from the Baynes and Jaffray Fire Departments along with the Jaffray Water Tender respond to the scene. “When we arrived, we found a 30foot seasonal RV along with two all terrain vehicles completely engulfed in flames,” explains Jaffray Baynes Lake Fire Chief, Dave Boreen. “The RV was unoccupied and there were no injuries; however, the trailer and ATVs are a total loss and a nearby boat sustained some damage.” The fire quickly spread to the grass and area around the RV and crews focused much of their work on containing the fire so that neighbouring properties weren’t impacted. During the height of the fire, at least two propane tanks were fully engulfed and exploded. “The crew did a great job last night. Although it’s getting much cooler, the conditions out there are still dry and this fire quickly moved into the grass. It could certainly have become a much larger interface fire had they not been diligent in keeping it contained on site,” adds Boreen. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

As the second offering in the One Planet Film Series, Wildsight Kimberley/Cranbrook is pleased to be screening ‘Mad City Chickens’ - a sometimes serious, sometimes whimsical look at the people who keep urban chickens in their backyards . The film will be shown on October 25th in Cranbrook, and on October 26th in Kimberley. From chicken experts and authors to a rescued landfill hen and an inexperienced family that decides to take the poultry plunge—and even a mad professor and giant hen that take to the streets. It’s a humorous and heartfelt trip through the world of backyard chickendom, that features coops, birds, eggs,

art, a California musical hen, a Texas life-saving flock…and even a mad professor and a giant chicken that find their way into the mix. “We’re passionate about our ongoing food sustainability projects, and feel that the backyard chicken issue is one worth exploring in our communities.” said Jessica Windle of Wildsight Kimberley Cranbrook. “Keeping a flock of hens in the backyard is appealing to many households – chickens provide a source of fertilizer, pest control, and of course, fresh eggs. There are also concerns about backyard chickens, primarily that chickens and their feed could become attractants for bears and other wildlife.” Wildsight welcomes discussion from all com-

munity members on the topic, and will be holding a panel discussion immediately following the film, with local area residents on hand to answer your questions about raising chickens. “It is our hope that the film and discussion will stimulate the formation of a group that will look carefully into the potential of keeping backyard chickens in our communities.” ‘Mad City Chickens’ will screen on Thursday, October 25th, at the College of the Rockies Lecture Theatre, and in Kimberley on Friday, October 26th at Centre 64. Start time both evenings is 7:30 pm. Admission is by donation, with chicken themed draw prizes to be won. www.wildsight/kimcran

Integrating all Planes of Motion into your Workout In order for your workouts to be useful and functional – and by functional I mean making your daily life, your job, your sport or whichever activity you engage in easier – it needs to be adapted to you and to your body’s requirements. However, many workouts almost always exclusively include the sagittal plane, which is the plane that makes you go forwards and backwards Aurélie (most exercises on machines isolate Wiedemann only one muscle or muscle group and are designed to condition people this way), but as human beings we were designed to move in all planes of motion. Take any sport and try to see if people only move back and forth: Hockey, rugby, basketball, football, baseball, martial arts, golf etc. all require movement in every direction. When we are gardening, when we are cleaning the house, even when we are shopping for groceries, we need to twist (transverse plane), bend sideways (frontal plane), sometimes we even work in all three planes of motion at once when we lift bags at the grocery store, when we vacuum or when we pull out nasty weeds in the yard, so why are most of our workouts only conditioning us to go back and forth? At the CHEK Institute one of the requirements of our program designs is to include multiple planes of motion in our workouts if our client is fit to do so. Usually after the postural correction phase is over, we try to adapt the workouts to the client’s activities and include the movements and planes of motion they will have to perform in. Conditioning people that way reduces the chance of injury tremendously. Often times, too many people who train exclusively in the sagittal plane think that they’ve gotten really strong, which is only partially true: Someone can be amazingly fit moving back and forth and can perform really poorly if asked to exercise in another plane of motion. This is quite alarming since some people might take on tasks they aren’t ready for, thinking: “I go to the gym, I am very strong at the leg press so I should be able to lunge sideways while lifting this heavy grocery bag.” Unfortunately, this can lead to all kinds of injuries. Working out is great, working out cleverly is even better. For more information on workouts and the programs we offer at Sattva Training Centre feel free to contact me at 250-4644046 or e-mail me at sattvatraining@gmail.com to book a free consultation.

Trucks and Tools Showcase The Fire Departments from around the Columbia Valley are inviting valley residents and visitors to join them for the first ever “Trucks and Tools Showcase” later this month. “We will have representation from all seven of the fire departments in the Valley, equipment on display, recruiting tents and a barbecue,” explained Columbia Valley Fire & Rescue Services Deputy Chief, Martin Caldwell. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for all of us to showcase our departments, the equipment we have and the training we can provide.” The Trucks and Tools Showcase will run Saturday, October 27, 2012 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the parking lots of Home Hardware and Canadian Tire in Invermere. Donations will be taken during the barbecues, and all funds raised will go toward the Radium Fire Medical Program / AED Fund. “I would encourage anyone who has been thinking of becoming a volunteer firefighter to come down and visit us during the Showcase. It’s a wonderful opportunity to receive specialized training, be part of a great team, and give back to your community,” said Caldwell. There will be participation in the event from the CVFRS departments in Edgewater, Panorama, Windermere and Fairmont, along with the other Departments in the Valley: Invermere, Radium and Canal Flats. For more information, contact the Windermere Fire Department at 250342-6214 or visit the “Columbia Valley Fire and Rescue” Facebook page.

FORD (BC) LTD

Thinking outside of the box inspired the 2012 Journey

Stylish and powerful, the Terrain is a next generation SUV

PHOTO SUBMITTED

The 2012 Dodge Journey broke the mould with its novel seating area and power to spare.

The rugged 2012 Terrain is all about going anywhere you want — in style.

Overall: Dodge re-jigs its Journey line for 2012, but leaves well enough alone otherwise. Drivetrain: The base 173-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder and available 283-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 carry over. While initially not particularly pretty or polished, the Dodge Journey has always been clever thanks to its novel seating area, storage bins and gloveboxes. But when refreshed for the 2011 model year, the big wagon finally found itself as a real contender. The excellent interior update is complemented by freshened front exterior styling; V6 models get a different lower grille opening than the four-cylinder models for a measure of exclusivity along with a “split crosshair” grille for all models. The

Overall: The best effort yet to expand GMC beyond heavy-duty trucks and sportutilities. Drivetrain: An efficient 2.4-litre four-cylinder drives the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission, which does double duty to deliver power from the optional 3.0-litre V6. While most small wagons are aiming for organic and swoopy shapes, the only curves you’ll find on the squared-off Terrain are the four tires. The five-passenger GMC shares its platform and powertrains with the second-generation Chevrolet Equinox that arrived for the 2010 model year, though you would never guess these two are in any way related. GM has put much effort into crafting exceptional interiors of late and the control panel for the Terrain would seem right

Dodge Boys updated the interior with new materials and relocated the shift lever and cupholders for more hasslefree operation. As before, there’s standard seating for five people, although there’s an available two-place thirdrow 50/50 split bench. There are also some other clever interior storage options such as a front passenger seat with a flip-forward hinged cushion that’s ideal for concealing cameras, purses and other valuables. Also don’t forget the chilled storage bin inside the glove compartment that can keep a couple of additional beverages at the ready. Although actually influenced by the Dodge Avenger sedan, this roomier derivation has about 10 more centimetres between the front and rear wheels and a 20-centimetre advantage in height, but with

an overall length that is greater by just four centimetres. Also shared with the Avenger are its engines: a 173-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder with four-speed automatic in base models; optional is a 283-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 with a six-speed auto. There are four 2012 trim levels (Canada Value Package, SE Plus, SXT, and R/T AWD), which means there’s likely a Journey for every taste, need and budget. Most Journeys are now front-wheel-drive with all-wheel-drive now exclusively in the top-line R/T. The system automatically kicks in to direct power to the rear wheels when needed, including slippery mud and snow conditions as well as when the vehicle is accelerating up to 110 km-h.

at home in one of the company’s premium-priced models. There are bucket seats up front and the split-folding rear bench has eight inches of sliding fore-and-aft travel for optimum passenger or cargo room. Additional containment spots include an oversized glove box with separate instrument panel storage, a built-in-center-console bin suitable for concealing a laptop plus two-tier storage areas built into the door panels. A 182-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder is standard while a 264-horsepower 3.0-litre V6 is optional. Both operate with six-speed automatic transmissions and both can be had with frontor optional all-wheel-drive. Towing capacity for the fourcylinder is 680 kilograms, while the V6 is rated for 1,500. Base SLE models feature the usual air/tilt/power

PHOTO SUBMITTED

accessories along with a few unusual standard features such as a rear-vision camera and 12 months of OnStar, GM’s remote help and courtesy concierge service. All four-cylinder Terrains come with Active Noise Cancellation that uses microphones to detect noise. The system responds by emitting counteracting and continuous sound waves through the audio system. For 2012, every Terrain model gets a new audio system that uses an 18-centimetre touch screen that also incorporates the screen for the back-up camera. For buyers looking to ease into the entry-utility bracket, or for those wanting to downscale from their previous full-size perches, the feature-laden Terrain is worth a look.

Cards of Thanks

To the Staff at the FW Green Home: The family of the late Stanley Shayler (Stan the Man & Papa) would like to say Thank You everyone for the excellent care our Dad received, while a resident. Our Father was very much loved (that was very evident) and the care he received was above and beyond excellent! "Together Again"

Kathryn Ann Mohr, age 90, died on October 15, 2012 at Joseph Creek Care Village in Cranbrook. Kay was born in Vancouver, the youngest of Frank and Hilda Farley's three children. She met Frank, the love of her life and husband of 67 years while attending the University of British Columbia. She lived a full and happy life; enjoying each day and cherishing each moment with her family. Kay and Frank both had a passion for life and a vital spirit that resulted in lifelong friendships in each of the more than ten cities where they lived before moving to Cranbrook. Kay had an infectious laugh which could be heard whenever she got together with family or friends. Whether it was a family gathering, party, dance, or her 89th birthday, she would always be one of the last to leave. She was a keen competitor and it was not unusual to hear her cries of “our team is red hot!! at family bocce tournaments. She enjoyed skiing, golf, square dancing, clog dancing, round dancing and just plain dancing. As a mother of five, she became by necessity an exceptional cook and as her daughter-in-law said, “she could make a gourmet meal from a carrot, a left over chicken wing, and a potato. She was also an accomplished seamstress and as old photos verify, it was not uncommon to see examples of her work on every member of the family. She also sewed the brides and brides maids dresses for her daughters weddings as well as arranging the flowers and cooking for the reception. Above all, she was a loving wife and mother dedicated to the happiness and well being of her family and she will be missed by all those that loved her for her adventurous spirit and her love of family. She is survived by her children and their spouses Virginia and Howard West of Skookumchuck, Kathryn and Al Shannon of Cranbrook, and Beth and Keith Baechler of Edmonton, Glenn and Sue Mohr of Creston, and Ron and Jude Mohr of Vernon, 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grand-children, and her brother Ken Farley. She is predeceased by her husband Frank, parents Frank and Hilda Farley, sister Helen Burt, and her grandson D'Arcy McRae. Kay's family would especially like to thank the Care Aides and all the staff at Joseph Creek Care Village as well as a special thank you to her caring friend Karen Christie. Their actions and kindness went far beyond their roles as care givers and helped make Kay and Frank's final years there enjoyable, interesting, and fun. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Society, #300 – 828 West 8th Avenue, Vancouver, BC V5Z 1E2 Condolences may be left for the family at www.markmemorial.com. Agricultural Plan Open Houses You are invited to join us at our upcoming Agricultural Plan Open Houses. There will be seven evenings in all, led by our consultant Dave Struthers to create conversations around agriculture in the region. And, we want to hear from you! Dave will be sharing information on the 2011 Agricultural Land Use Inventory, and looking to learn more about your vision for the future of agriculture in the East Kootenay and how to work toward that vision. Although we recognize the impact the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) and Agricultural Land Commission policies have on agriculture in our region, we do not intend to focus on the merits of the ALR or operation of the ALC. The changes being undertaken by the ALC will be led by the Commission and are not part of the Agricultural Plan process.
