Residents lobby minister for new supportive living facility By Treena Mielke Rimbey residents who want to see a new supportive living facility in Rimbey become reality are being asked to sign letters to be forwarded to the minister of municipal affairs. Rimbey resident Hugh Bayne said he was given copies of letters by Viola Schneider and asked to cir-

culate them at the Rimbey Drop In Centre. The letter, addressed to Doug Griffiths, asks him to give serious consideration to the application for a new, much needed supportive living facility for seniors citizens. “Our present lodge is in need of many upgrades, has several very small rooms and usually has a waiting list,” the letter states. “We see the old lodge as having potential to be used as low income housing, an Outreach school or as a habitat for humanity homes.” The letter also stated Rimbey has a growing senior population and the need for a new facility is urgent. “A new facility for the Town of Rimbey would certainly aid in the care and well being of the frail and elderly seniors in this community.” Bayne, who signed the letter himself, said he is happy to encourage others to sign. “I think it’s a good thing. We need to get the government to commit.” Bayne said a stack of letters with individual signatures will receive more attention than one letter with multiple signatures. Anglin said the more citizens lobby for the proposal, the better chance it will have of being successful. “The goal is our seniors. All we care about is that our seniors have a decent place to live.” Anglin stressed the decision doesn’t lie solely in the hands of Doug Griffiths, and Cabinet will

Chamber of commerce Promotes forming new resource board By Treena Mielke A Rimbey chamber of commerce initiative could be the spark that will ignite positive spinoffs for the farming and business community. The chamber is looking at forming a resource board comprised of people passionate about their community and interested in moving rural and urban businesses forward. The board would meet monthly on line to exchange ideas and information and also talk to entrepreneurs about utilizing the expertise of an online facilitator, Jen Jenkins, who is trained in helping potential business owners and farmers reach their goals. The board’s success would depend upon members keeping information confidential and working actively toward common goals and objectives. Jenkins, who spoke at an information meeting Oct. 17 at the Rimbey Drop In Centre, has been hired through a partnership with the FarmOn Foundation and Green Hectares, a non profit organization supporting rural development in Alberta. Chamber president Jackie Stratton said the service Jenkins provides is important and she wants entrepreneurs to know it is available. Yvonne Fizer, a business development representative from FarmOn Foundation, said facilitators such as Jenkins do not self promote. “We need to let local people know Jennifer exists and that she is a real person. And we want to help the rural economy. If you help your neighbor, ADVERTISE that helps you. We want passionate people (on the resource board) who will listen and contribute if and when they can.” In her presentation, Jenkins, who is a fifth generation rancher living south of Pincher Creek, said she is available for anyone who wants to start a business or is in a business and needs some advice. “I will talk to anyone who wants support. It can be about agriculture or it can be a stay at home mom who just wants to sell Avon. I’m never going to pretend that I should know more about what you should do about your life than what you do,” she added, “but I will listen and offer one-on-one coaching.” Jenkins, in her presentation, said businesses thrive when the components of product, marketing and financial management are established. She said entrepreneurs usually excel in one of these areas, but need a team to ascertain all areas are effective. “All of us know that having a business takes a lot of hard work. The area you will be weak in is the one you don’t like to do.” Jenkins helps entrepreneurs find qualified people and resources so their business plans can be effective. Information from the FarmOn Foundation circulated at Wednesday’s meeting states (volunteers from) 300 communities have been trained in Enterprise Facilitation since 1985. Each year facilitators help between 100 to 200 entrepreneurs creating an average of eight to 10 new businesses resulting in 20 to 50 new jobs. This month is the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis (Oct. 16 to 28, 1962), so we’re going to hear a great deal about the weeks when the world almost died. But the past is a foreign country, a place where everything was in black and white and men still wore hats, so it’s just scary stories about a long-gone time. Or so it seems. The outlines of the tale are well known. Soviet Premier Khrushchev moved Soviet nuclear missiles to Cuba in October 1962, to deter the United States from attacking the island — but from Cuba the Soviet missiles would be only five minutes away from their targets in the United States. That was intolerable to the US military, and on Oct. 22 President John Kennedy went on television and warned the American public of the risk of nuclear war. He then declared a naval blockade of Cuba, saying that he would stop Soviet ships carrying further missiles from reaching Cuba by force if necessary. That would mean war, almost certainly nuclear war, but at least the blockade gave the Russians time to think. The Soviet leaders were now terrified by the potential consequences of their own actions, and looking for a way out of the crisis. So after a few harrowing days a deal was done in which the Soviet SS-4 missiles would be withdrawn from Cuba in return for a public promise by the United States not to invade Cuba. The crisis was officially over by Oct. 28. There is something missing from this narrative, however. The crisis did not really end on Oct. 28. A new book by Sergo Mikoyan, The Soviet Cuban Missile Crisis: Castro, Mikoyan, Kennedy, Khrushchev, and the Missiles of November, reveals that it extended all the way through November. US intelligence was unaware that along with the SS-4s, the Soviet Union sent more than 100 shorter-range “tactical” nuclear missiles to Cuba. Fidel Castro was in a rage about having been abandoned by his Soviet allies, so to mollify him Khrushchev decided to let him keep the tactical missiles. But giving Fidel Castro a hundred nuclear weapons was a recipe for a new and even big-

ger crisis in a year or two, and Khrushchev’s deputy, Anastas Mikoyan, who was sent to Cuba to tell Castro the news, quickly realized that it was madness. The second half of the crisis, invisible to the Americans, was a month-long struggle by Mikoyan to pry Castro’s fingers off the hundred tactical nuclear missiles. In the end, he only succeeded by telling Castro that an unpublished (and in fact non-

existent) law forbade the transfer of Soviet nuclear weapons to a foreign country. In December, they were finally crated up and sent home. So it all ended happily — but the whole world could have ended instead. As Robert McNamara, Kennedy’s defence secretary in 1962, said 40 years later, “we were just plain lucky in October 1962 — and without that luck most of you would never have been born because the world would have been destroyed instantly or made unlivable in October 1962.” Then he said the bit that ap-

plies to us: “Something like that could happen today, tomorrow, next year. It will happen at some point. That is why we must abolish nuclear weapons as soon as possible.” They are still there, you know, and human beings still make mistakes. Yoga and meditation offers unexpected rewards Some people swear that yoga and meditation are keys that unlock doors to peace, fulfillment and other good things. I had a chance to experience both yoga and meditation this week. Of course, the meditation happened smack dab in the middle of an interview. My interviewee was a gentleman with a soft voice and kind eyes who told me, in no uncertain terms, how meditation worked for him. “I meditate a half an hour to an hour daily,” he told me and I dutifully scribbled the quote in my notebook, thinking, “wow, good for you.” He then took a small crystal ball off the table and told me to close my eyes and visualize it expanding and growing inside of me. “Why” I asked, “would I do that?” “It will just make you feel really good,” he replied simply. “Peaceful.” I tried. It didn’t work. I didn’t really feel much different, but, then again, I was doing an interview and, I told myself realistically it was neither the time nor place to allow myself to slip into a meditative state no matter how good it made me feel. But, later over shared stories washed down with coffee and served with these interestingly delicious cookies, I did feel good, so perhaps the magic crystal ball had done its work, after all.

I tried yoga later this week with my daughter. I had texted her (I’m getting pretty good at texting) “Lebs du smthg 2gthr” I texted and she texted me back “how about yoga?” I arrived at the yoga class 15 minutes late, Treena Mielke still dressed in my street On The Other Side clothes. The room was dimly lit, with weird music playing and mirrors all over the walls. I changed quickly, and slipped in beside my daughter, pretending that I had been there all along. I looked at her and noticed she had one leg bent at a weird angle and tucked under her and the other leg stretched out behind her. I tried to do that, too, but it really, really hurt, so I quit. I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror on the wall and sucked in my tummy and wished they would lower the lights even more. They didn’t. The rest of the yoga class consisted of the instructor telling us to slip into these other weird posses, many of which had animal names, and then

staying there for an undetermined length of time while we listened to our body. “Ouch,” my body said. “Quit that.” Sometime she told us to slip into the child’s pose which I was familiar with because I had seen my grandson accomplish that very pose with great ease that very morning while sucking his thumb. In the end we were all to lay on our mats, cover ourselves with a blanket and listen to the instructor’s voice take us quietly and peacefully to some other place where there was no worries and things were good. I tried to go there, but, instead, immediately fell asleep, only to wake up and see everyone rolling up their mats and putting them away. “We’re done?” I questioned, rubbing my eyes. I obviously need to work on both yoga and meditation to reap the benefits that await me if I just follow instructions. But, even though I’m still learning, one thing I know for sure. Sharing coffee and cookies with a friend and chatting about not very much at all is a good thing. And, sharing the gift of time with someone who calls you ‘mom’ never, ever grows old. But, I’m wondering if she would like to try shopping, next time. I already know how to do that.

LETTER TO EDITOR

The Rimbey Review, October 23, 2012 5

Remember to say thanks to parents during National Foster Family Week Dear Editor: On behalf of the Central Alberta Child and Family Services Authority Board, we would like to celebrate the foster parents and caregivers who provide care to children and youth in Central Alberta. These unsung heroes are among us, in our communities. They commit themselves to providing the dayto-day care for children and youth who have faced challenges. They assist young Albertans with open hearts and open homes. We’d like to invite central Albertans to join us in recognizing foster parents during National Foster Family Week. It is important to mention that more foster parents are needed in central Alberta communities to care for children and youth in foster care.

There is an application process to become a foster parent that involves training, security checks and a home study. Central Albertans who may be interested are encouraged to contact the caregiver recruiter toll free by dialing 310-0000, and then dialing 403-755-6104, to explore the possibilities of becoming a foster parent. Another great resource is the Alberta Foster Parent Association (AFPA). The AFPA web site URL is www. afpaonline.com. Please join us in recognizing foster parents and caregivers in central Alberta. Our heartfelt thanks go to you during National Foster Family Week. Christine Moore and Jason Sansregret, Central Alberta Child and Family Services Authority board co-chairs

Drop in sports offered By Treena Mielke As the season changes and the weather becomes cooler, adult sports in Rimbey remains a viable option for those who wish to leave their couch potato image behind and get moving. Recreation director Rick Kreklewich said drop in badminton and volleyball are now ongoing at the community centre. Anyone who wants to grab a badminton racket

and exercise their skill or improve their lack of skill may do so at the gymnasium at the community centre from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday nights. And anyone who wants to give volleyball a try is welcome to do so Tuesday nights from 7 to 9 p.m. Both sports are set up on a drop in basis, so no one needs to feel pressured to attend each week, but only when they are free to do so. And for those who prefer walking, the halls at Rimbey Junior/ Senior High School are open and ready for use Monday to Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. “You can walk around the school in Tyler Jordan DD whatever pattern you (Honours) wish to,” said Kreklewich. “It’s simply a nice, cozy place to exThe Smile You’ve Been ercise without having Looking For. to go out in the cold.” The school is available for those who wish to walk because of a joint use agreement with the town which Rimbey Beside the Bargain! Teen in possession of drugs arrested by Rimbey RCMP Rimbey RCMP had another busy week investigating over 40 files. Highlights of the week included domestic disputes, suicidal persons, vandalism, uttering threats to kill, assaults, criminal harassment, drugs and other criminal matters. Last week, Mounties in Rimbey were hot on the trail of a suspect responsible for vandalizing several businesses and the High School over the last two weeks. There was also a theft reported in a separate incident from another business that occurred during business hours where the suspect matched the description of the culprit police were seeking. Officers quickly followed up on leads and after examining the facts of each case, made an arrest. A 15-year-old male, a resident of the Rimbey area, was taken into custody after he was located at a flop house in town. What is disturbing about this case is that he had Methamphetamine in his possession when he was arrested. The accused is charged with six counts of mischief to property under $5000 and possession of Methamphetamine and will appear in Rimbey court on November 2. In continued efforts to be a presence out in the rural areas, a member was conducting highway patrols in the early morning hours on Highway 607 north of Rimbey. An unsuspecting lady driv-

ing her new Ford F150 was observed driving at a high rate of speed while enjoying the sunrise on the horizon. What caught the officer’s eye was not how fast she was going, but how she looked when she saw the police car. Her deer in the headlights look was funny enough, but the skid marks she left on the highway when she panicked and stood on her brakes was equally priceless. Fortunately for her, the officer was very fair and in lieu of the cost of new tires and the laundry bill, she was given a break on the ticket. Police assisted in the investigation of another house fire. In this case, it is believed that the fire was caused by issues with the fireplace. The fire occurred in the middle of the night while the homeowner was sleeping. Thankfully, the smoke woke him in enough time for him and his dog to escape the inferno without severe injuries. Please take the time to inspect your fireplace and the chimney to ensure all is well. Halloween came early for one Rimbey resident who observed a ghost driving a Toyota eastbound on 54 Avenue during

the middle of the day. It became more of a concern when the car smacked into a parked van When the investigating officer attended the scene, it became evident that there was no invisible man driving the car... the car’s owner had forgot to put it in gear and had not used the emergency brake. A strong gust of wind was enough to get the car started down the slight grade of the road until it abruptly met the van. Hunting season is about to kick off in full swing for big game. Teri Larsgard is at much at home inside a show ring with her horse as she is on her hobby farm near Crestomere. Raised near Rocky Mountain House, she grew up around horses, competing in her first show when she was only four-years-old. “My dad logged and farmed with horses,” she said. “And my mom showed horses.” By the time Larsgard was 12, she was skilled at riding horses people had brought to the family farm to be broke or trained. “I was small and I bounced well,” she said. At age 14, Larsgard started competing with futurity horses. Growing up around horses, and becoming experienced and skilled in the show ring has resulted in several trophies and championships. She has earned the American Quarterhorse Association World Qualifier and Reserve National Champion. During her years in the AQHA she has five grand champions and 16 reserve champions to her credit. She has earned the distinction of being the futurity money earner multiple times and has received several open high point awards as well as many open junior horse high point awards. Larsgard, who has spent 21 years coaching and almost that many judging, enjoys using her skills to help others. Her latest clinic held in Rimbey Oct. 13, gave her a chance to help people of all ages learn the

technical and regulatory aspects of exhibiting their horse, what clothing and tack is acceptable and the proper show ring etiquette. During the clinic Larsgard defined each class, how it is judged and what the rules and expectations are for each. She explained how to avoid cutting people off, rail positioning, how to deal with badgering from outside the ring, and how to properly line up. She defined terms such as extended jog or trot, counter canter and reverse on the jog. She explained the proper definition of a junior horse and what tack is acceptable, talked about hand positions and the ruling regarding bits and defined a snaffle and where a leverage bit should be used. Larsgard enjoys sharing her knowledge. “It’s very heartbreaking for me to see someone who has put in the time and traveled long distances to attend a horse show and then not be allowed to participate.” It breaks my heart to have to tell them you have two minutes to go find the proper tack.” Learning the rules of horse shows is not easy, she said, noting that experienced people are not always willing to share information to less knowledgeable competitors. Clinics such as the one held in Rimbey give novice showmen a chance to gain valuable information. “It gives them confidence and in the end it works out well for everyone. They enter the horse

shows, bring money to our economy; to our towns.” Larsgard plans to do a series of clinics in the spring focusing on showmanship and halter, grooming,

western riding and also hunter under saddle and hunt seat. For more information about Larsgard and her clinics email her at tlarsgaard@gmail.com

Retired businessman ready to enjoy hobbies and interests By Treena Mielke Even as the sign in front of his former business, ‘Congcar Services’, comes down Duncan Congcar is ready to move on to the next chapter in his life. Congcar, who comes from Thailand has lived in Rimbey for more than 30 years, 25 of which he spent as the mechanics teacher at Rimbey Junior/Senior High School. Last year he re-opened his business as Duncan Lube and Auto Detailing, but has now signed a threeyear lease with OK TIRE giving them use of the building. The decision to close his business was not an easy one for Congcar, but he believes, at age 75, it’s time to move on. “It is just about the perfect time, he said, “but I sure do miss it. I go to visit them (at OK TIRE) almost every day. Fortunately, Congcar, who loves working on vehicles and putting his mechanical expertise to use, also loves golfing. This year, due to the favorable fall weather, he has been out the links several times and has also had time to perfect his putting skills on a small putting green set up in his living room. As well as golfing, the amiable gentleman, spends an half an hour to an hour daily meditating, the benefits of which are endless, he said. When people meditate they are forced to stop thinking, talking and being active and are simply still. This stillness invites calmness and allows the

mind to become devoid of emotions such as anger and greed. Congcar suggests people who want to meditate visualize a favorite object or a crystal ball, allowing the visualization to enter the centre of their being and expand. “You have to relax yourself from the top of your head until the whole body is relaxed and peaceful, he stressed. As the meditation proceeds, the mind, like muddy water left to settle, becomes clearer and the light inside becomes brighter. “You need to focus on the light and let it expand. You will begin to feel really good. Congcar said answers to questions

which hover on the edge of consciousness will become clear when one allows the mind to enter the state of meditation. Meditation helped him cope with the death of his first wife and brother in a tragic car accident in 1981, he said. “How do you deal with tragedy? he asked. “Meditation helped me. Focus on the light and the light will tell you what to do. As a young man living in rural Thailand, Congcar spent some time as a monk, living by strict rules such as not touching, or even speaking to a member of the opposite sex. He also was instructed not kill any form of life including mosquitoes. “It was a simple life, he recalled.

“We had 227 commandments to follow. We slept on the floor and dressed very simply. Congcar was a monk for only a short time, later marrying and coming to Canada after receiving a CIDA scholarship. He studied at the University of Alberta, later moving to Rimbey where he taught for many years. Congcar found his teaching career to be fulfilling and rewarding. “The best career is teaching, he said, his face beaming with pleasure. “I love stubborn kids. My philosophy is that if you can take one bad kid and teach him to be a good citizen then it’s all worthwhile. Congcar plans to visit his son Congsin and his family in Bangkok this fall. He and his wife, Srpen will travel to that city on Nov. 3. They plan to return to Rimbey, April 20. As well as visiting his son, Congcar hopes to travel to Burma and Cambodia and attend meditation sessions.

Bentley curling club’s season fast approaching By June Norvila The first early snow of the season was a reminder of the winter sporting season approaching. The Bentley Curling Club executive have things lined up and are aiming at an Oct. 29 start-up date. At the club’s annual fall meeting Oct. 10 dates of bonspiels were put forward. “We were lucky. None of our dates conflicted with bonspiels in the surrounding area (so far),” said director Krista Turner. “And we got them in first.” They have scheduled the yearly Farmers’ Bonspiel, Seniors’ Bonspiel, Ladies’ Bonspiel, Men’s

Thank You to all of my friends & family for making my

90th Birthday such a special occasion.

Bonspiel and the closing Mixed Bonspiel. There are two new ones added to the list. An “Anyone Can Curl” bonspiel will be tried Jan. 25 to 27 and takes over the usual Ma & Pa Bonspiel spot. The idea is to have two adults with two youths on each team and have a fun bonspiel. The other new one is called Fire & Ice and is being hosted by the Bentley Firefighters Foundation on Feb. 15 to 17. Invitations have been sent out to firefighting groups in central and southern Alberta and it is hoped there will be a favorable response. Also new is grades 7, 8, and 9 Bentley School students making more use of the rink. Teacher Marla Kolybaba made a presentation explaining what she wants to offer her phys ed classes and the need for volunteers to be at the rink on the Fridays to help supervise. “This is (considered) recreational edu-

cation — sports you can do for life which this (curling) is,” she said. She was pleased with the co-operation of the curling executive and their offer to let the school have ice time when they needed it and at no cost. The club will also provide some of the equipment the students require. It will be interesting to see how the new lighting installed in the spring over the ice surface will look. The bylaws were updated. Membership fees will remain the same — a real deal when compared to most other clubs. Brian Sautner returns as head ice technician/lobby caretaker. Applications for a lounge attendant are being considered. Tickets are available for the side-byside quad raffle that is ongoing with the draw the end of December. Club president Norm Rieu appealed to the membership for volunteers. There are

many ways throughout the year that help would be appreciated whether helping put in the ice, organizing and running bonspiels and regular leagues, and more. A volunteer director is still needed and would be a welcome addition to fill a vacancy left by Lynda Haarstad-Petten who has moved on to other commitments and will be missed. If you can volunteer some time or are interested in what the club offers and would like more information contact the club at 403-748-4303 or any of the executive: president Norm Rieu, vice-president Kyle Brink, treasurer Tilly McKenzie, and directors Martin Wilson, Colin Scholze, Dennis Duncan, Krista Turner or Gerald Peterson. Following the meeting people began to sign up for leagues before going back out into the snow — a reminder of things to come.

Thanks to an unusual and very generous donation, there is increased hope for the more than 11,000 Albertans living with multiple sclerosis. A brand new 2012 Audi A3 2.0T has been donated to the Alberta & Northwest Territories Division of the MS Society, and until December, the public can support the fight against MS by purchasing raffle tickets for the car. Proceeds will help boost the MS Society’s contribution to MS research, as the search into the cause and a cure for the debilitating disease continues. The donation was made by Gayelene Bonenfant, a Calgary resident whose sister was diagnosed with MS in 1999. Gayelene is an MS Society Board member, and has witnessed first-hand the impacts of the disease. “I wanted to provide a gift that more than one person could be involved in,” said Gayelene. “Because the raffle tickets are priced affordably, we can all pitch in and support this important cause.” Staff and volunteers from MS Society Chapters across Alberta are now selling raffle tickets for the vehicle, with the winning name being drawn on December 17. Tickets can also be purchased online. Cost is $10 per ticket, or 3 tickets for $20. There is a secondary prize of $5,000 cash. Lorraine Evans Cross, Executive Director said that volunteers will be selling tickets at Wal-mart, North Oct 15 – 29 & Oct 22 – 26 as well as Bower Place Shopping Centre Nov 7 – 10, 2012 Interest in MS research has never been greater. Funds raised from the raffle in Alberta will help ensure the MS Society is able to continue funding the most promising avenues of MS research, including CCSVI, remyelination, immunology, genetics, virology, vitamin D, MRI and pediatric MS, so that progress can be achieve as quickly as possible. Of particular interest is a research project taking place at the University of Calgary that will study progressive forms of MS. The MS Society and MS Scientific Research Foundation have invested $3.8 million into this study to investigate the complex interplay between degeneration and inflammation in MS. Since 2005, Albertans have contributed over $16 million to MS research. For more information on the raffle or to purchase tickets online, visit www. mssociety.ca/alberta. Celtic dance and gospel production provides inspiration By Treena Mielke A high energy Celtic dance and gospel production is coming soon to the Nazarene Church in Rimbey. The Sky family’s Celtic Revival which includes rollicking Celtic fiddle tunes and Riverdance style Irish dancing combined with humorous skits will be held Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. and Oct. 28 at 10:30 a.m. at the church. The show, which consists of two hour-long sets combining fiddle music with songs rich in harmonies, is on tour throughout the United States and Canada. As well as music and dance each set is full of hilarious stories, skits and inspirational testimonies. “All members of the family perform on several instruments and all contribute to the rich vocal harmonies and lively dance. It’s family entertainment at its best,” said Rimbey resident Glenis Shaw. “Really funny and inspiring are two adjectives that would fittingly describe their high en-

ergy Celtic dance and gospel production, Celtic Revival.” The Sky family consists of the dad, Tom who plays lead guitar, fiddle and piano, his sons Seth, on bass; Joel on lead fiddle, flute and saxophone and Gabe as lead dancer, guitar and drums and his daughter Miriam who plays piano and dances a fine reel. The family is from the north shore of Prince Edward island. The children were home schooled and on long winter nights perfected their musical skills around the fire. The dance, which was added to the show at a later date, has become the showpiece of the performance. “It is great fun for the whole family. For anyone interested in Celtic family entertainment it is a show not to miss,” said Shaw. To learn more about the Sky family and their music check out their website at www.theskys.org. A free will offering will be taken at the church during the performance.

The Casual Vacancy complex book with layers of mystery and intrigue The Casual Vacancy by J.K. When you’re dead and gone, you’ll leave many things behind because you can’t take them with you — although, in the new novel The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling, some wished that Barry Fairbrother had. Everyone in the small England town of Pagford was shocked when Barry Fairbrother died of an aneurism. He was alive one minute, gone the next — but definitely not forgotten. That’s because Barry’s death left a “casual vacancy” on the Pagford Parish Council. In a normal year, that wouldn’t have meant much but this year, Barry’s vote on the issue of the Fields, a housing complex, was an important one. Political wrangling and dirty deals had allowed the Fields to be built on the outskirts of Pagford some 60 years ago, which was a sore point ever

Even though Christmas is more than two months away, the Rimbey Santa Night committee is already hard at work, planning to make this year’s traditional event bigger, better and more brightly lit than ever. Recreation director and committee member Rick Krekelwich said the committee is looking for donations of LED lights and used Christmas decorations. “We want to decorate the park to look as bright and colorful as possible,” said Kreklewich. “We want it to look really good and that is why we need as many lights and decorations as possible.” The park, when lit up at Christmas, has a magical appearance that

adds to any seasonal festivity. The twinkling lights and decorations seem to make the historic buildings and the park, itself, come alive with romance, adventure and fun. Santa Night is to be held Dec. 7 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. and will feature carolers, wagon rides, hot chocolate and hotdogs and, of course, the jolly old elf, himself, Santa Claus. Santa Night, a long time tradition in Rimbey, attracts many families throughout the area and definitely adds to the festive spirit of the holiday season. Anyone who has LED lights and/ or used Christmas decorations they wish to donate may contact Rick at the recreation office at 403-8433151 or Cheryl at Pas Ka Poo Park at 403-843-2004.

Service dog will be missed in Bentley Continued from Page 15 In March 2011 he was written up in the Saint Bernard Fanciers of Canada publication and in the The Saint Fancier Winter 2012 United States version of the breed publication. He took part in the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides walk and even promoted Bentley for Kraft Hockeyville in 2010. But there was a roadblock for the two of them. When Carla tried to get Angus recognized under the new Alberta Government Service Dog Act in April 2009 she found out they only recognized dogs that were professionally trained by certified organizations/ schools for one specific area of help and Gus was home-trained. Gus had lots of support though. Carla submitted letters of endorsement including from the bank, STARS and her doctor, the United Way, and Alberta Guide Dog Services. A quote in a letter of support from the manager of Development and Communications for Alberta Guide

Dog Services to have Angus recognized said in part “I think Gus is the exception to the rule and he should be somehow grandfathered in as he is far superior to many of the certified dogs I have seen out there. Dogs just don’t get any better or reliable than this fellow.” Finally he did get “grandfathered in” under the act because he already was a service dog under the Human Rights Act before the new act was implemented. She still wanted to have him be recognized as a certified Service Dog. Gus was one of only 8 dogs that passed out of almost 60 dogs that were accepted into a pilot project for “home-schooled” dogs. They had to go through a tedious and stringent series of tests to get accredited. They included a number of days in Edmonton riding a city bus, going through West Edmonton mall and all its distractions, including the food fair and people offering him food, riding elevators and escalators, etc. Angus passed with flying colors. The program was quietly ended.

Angus was finally issued his certified Service Dog ID card on July 7, 2009. Despite being under his vet’s care and being on intravenous and antibiotics he died. The cause of his sudden death was undetermined. Carla speculates that maybe he had been bitten 9 days earlier while out in BC by a deerfly or other insect as that can cause ill effects very quickly. She reminds people to have all their pets’ shots up to date and watch for any changes in their behavior or eating habits. She feels another dog trained by someone else cannot meet all her needs. They are trained for one specific area like a seeing eye dog, a mobility dog, a therapy dog, a dog for the hearing impaired, etc., but not for the full gamut of areas like Gus got ac-

customed to mostly because he had lived with his family from 9 weeks old. Knowing she may have to tackle the human rights act to get another self-trained dog certified, she is considering just that. Colleen McNaught, who transported Gus and Carla all over, and is a close friend, said, “He was always the good will ambassador.” Carla would like to see one universal term - ‘service dogs’ - used to refer to dogs that provide special assistance for people. The terminology now is confusing - guide dogs, dog guides, service dogs, aid dogs, helper dogs, etc. All of these exceptional dogs provide a wonderful, meaningful service to enhance the quality of life of a person with disabilities.
