Heritage rail society officially opens the Cloverdale Car Barn

By Jennifer Lang It was the official housewarming party for Cloverdale’s newest heritage attraction. Last weekend, the Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society hosted an open house and official opening of its new Cloverdale Car Barn, drawing more than 250 visitors and dignitaries. And as with any proper housewarming, one of the dignitaries brought along a housewarming gift. At the ribbon cutting, Southern Railway (SRY) of British Columbia President Frank Butzelaar announced the donation of a small heritage building and semaphore towers from Clayburn Junction in Abbotsford – the last manually operated diamond railway cross-

ing in Canada. SRY officials decided to donate the collection to the FVHRS because of its plans to launch passenger operations this spring out of Cloverdale, where a heritage rail revival is underway. “It really is showing that both the Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society installations and Cloverdale itself are becoming heritage destinations,” FVHR society chair John Sprung said. The new car barn was completed earlier this year at 5554 176 Street. The big green barn with red trim is home to the society’s tiny fleet: two BC Electric Railway Interurban cars that have been the focus of thousands of hours of volunteer restoration

work. They made the big move from Sullivan Station at 152 Street and 64 Avenue in August. More than 60 years after the last Interurban passed through Cloverdale, passenger service is set to resume on the Victoria Day long weekend in May, staffed by volunteers and running on summer weekends and holidays until Thanksgiving 2013, Sprung said. The project is in partnership with the City of Surrey and the Southern Railway of B.C., with the assistance of B.C. Hydro. “Next year is basically our ‘proof of concept runs’ to ensure everybody is happy,” Sprung said. The society will then look at expanding service westward, first to

Newton Town Centre, and possibly as far as the Scott Road Skytrain station. In the meantime, a volunteer drive is underway to recruit operators, conductors, ticket masters, maintenance crew

and more. No experience is necessary, said Sprung, just “living, breathing, and with a passion for people.” Training starts later this year. The Cloverdale Car Barn is also the future

home of Cloverdale Station, a replica of the original Interurban station that was built in 1909. Construction is set to begin in November. The society is about halfway to its fundraising goal of $1.5 million for

the project. “We’re all very excited,” he said. “We’re looking forward to welcoming the world to Cloverdale.” To volunteer call 604574-9056 or email volunteer@fvhrs.org.

Clayton home to take on displaced seniors Fraser Health says it will accommodate more than a third of the patients at the Residence at Clayton Heights, owned by Pinnacle Care Group at 71 Avenue and 188 Street, and the remaining 50 at the aging Highland Lodge in Langley, which will undergo renovations. Officials say the newly-built Clayton facility, which has a contract to provide 166 complex residential care beds as well as a 15-space residence for young adults with acquired brain injuries, will also provide the

required 29-bed tertiary behavioural stabilization program for older adults. Patient transfers are expected to run from November through April. Fraser Health had asked Delta View for a three-year extension, but was rejected. The health authority indicated it considers the two sites a temporary solution and plans to build an owned and operated facility. The transferred beds are for elderly patients who need six to 24 months of in-

tensive, specialized support at a temporarily higher level than otherwise available to assess, treat and stabilize their psychiatric needs and behaviours. Delta View was built for patients with dementia and operated on a “hugs not drugs” philosophy, and families have been anxious about the pending transfers. Fraser Health says the same type of care will be offered at the other two sites, in collaboration with the Czorny Alzheimer Centre in Surrey.

Helping at Halloween WE HAVE MOVED!

By Jennifer Lang The enthusiastic teens pictured at right are a fraction of the Clayton Heights Secondary students who will be out canvassing for non-perishable food items on Halloween, so have your donations ready. As many as 100 students are expected to take part in Halloween For Hunger, heading out in the Clayton neighbourhood and and to homes as far south as Highway 10 between 3 and 6 p.m. next Wednesday. The students will be distributing donation bags throughout Clayton and Cloverdale in preparation for the campaign. Halloween for Hunger traditionally kicks off the school’s Christmas food drive. In 2011, students collected more than 3,000 items. They’re hoping to double that this year.

Instead of trick-or-treating, these students are collecting donations for the needy.

Halloween for Hunger is spearheaded by the school’s Project Equal club, a studentled initiative to raise money for aid projects helping communities in developing countries and closer to home in the city of Surrey.

This Saturday, about 40 students were headed to a fundraiser for the Surrey Urban Mission. Clayton Heights Secondary is one of the largest supporters of the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper program, an

annual holiday food drive that supports needy families in the Cloverdale area. The Project Equal club is thought to be the school’s largest, with 270 members from Grades 8 to 12.

Stolen swing ‘dearly missed’ Not every news tip we receive turns into a story. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth sharing Sometimes, you get a tip or a lead you just can’t ignore. Earlier this week, we received an email message from reader Theresa Weltzin. The subject line posed a troubling question: Do you know who stole our favourite swing? “Our favourite swing at Greenaway Park was stolen about three weeks ago,” the message read. “Surrey Parks, Rec and Culture confirmed the theft and noted about two other disc swings stolen from other parks. Is there any way you can help find them?” The last line was a zinger: “The swing is dearly missed.” A photograph of the lonely playground was attached; two steel posts can be seen jutting pointlessly out of the ground, with nothing hanging in the space between them. Maybe not front page material, exactly, but definitely worth some more digging, I decided. I fired off a few follow up questions. While I waited for a reply, we posted Weltzin’s playground photo and query to the Reporter’s Facebook Page.

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

Reader Theresa Weltzin says her family’s favourite swing at Greenaway Park was stolen about three weeks ago.

“Over to you guys,” I asked. “Has anyone seen the stolen swing?” About an hour later, Buffy Dye commented: “How sad is that? My kids and daycare’s kids play there all the time and they really miss it too.” Weltzin certainly wasn’t alone. And my gut told me there was more to her story.

The Cloverdale

Later that evening, came her reply. “I would love to help Surrey Parks and Rec recover their missing swings, which is why I thought to send you the photo and information,” she said. “Hopefully someone knows more about it and can alert the Surrey RCMP for recovery of the swings or charges as appropriate.” Weltzin contacted the city af-

ter first noticing the disc swing’s absence, wondering if it had been removed for repairs. About a week later, they reported back, informing her that it had been stolen along with two others. “I believe they are looking into replacing it however that is unconfirmed,” Weltzin wrote. It would be a great shame if it weren’t. It turns out Weltzin’s youngest is a 15-year-old who is handicapped and loves the swing. “It’s one of the things she can do independently,” Weltzin explained. “She would go there virtually every day in the summer and we could play tennis or just watch from the bench. During the fall, a stop at Greenaway Park for the swing was part of our regular routine for weekend outings. Sadly, this lost its allure ever since the swing was taken.” And so, over to you, Cloverdale. As always, send your news tips, story ideas, photos and letters to: editor@cloverdalereporter.com.

Hundreds of expected to parade By Jennifer Lang For the under 12 set (and their parents), it’s the biggest party of the year, so if you’re a business in the historic town centre, start stockpiling the candy supplies. The Cloverdale Halloween Costume parade is a free, supervised trick-or-treat parade to local stores, and every year it just gets bigger and bigger. Last year’s unofficial crowd count stood at about 1,200 – the most participants ever. The 12th annual parade, presented by the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association and the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce, gets underway this Saturday afternoon at Surrey Museum Plaza and takes to the streets from there. “It’s a reflection of the community, it really is,” says Paul Orazietti, executive director of the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association. “It’s staggering how many Grade 1 and Grade 2 and kindergarten kids there are, particularly in Clayton.” The event is a hit with kids – and their parents. “We have a loyal following. A number of Cloverdale families return year after Costume year. It’s safe, it’s moniparade tored by the police, it’s at WHEN: Oct. 27 a convenient time, and it’s WHERE: Surrey Museum a lot of fun – and free.” Plaza Service groups like the From 1-3 p.m. Cloverdale Lions and the Rotary Club of Cloverdale take part, as does the Cloverdale Community office of the Surrey RCMP. Thie year Participaction’s Bring Back Play Funmobile will be there (1-4 p.m.), along with the return of the Saharan desert tortoise, “Dozer”, who will be inside the Surrey Museum at Pumpkin Power. Parade registration is at 1 p.m. at Surrey Museum Plaza, where there are activities and a group photo. Children and parents are put into three groups. At 2 p.m., they head out on a supervised parade. One group will visit businesses on 176 and 176A Streets in the town centre. The second will trick-ortreat at Clover Square Village on Highway 10. The third group will head over to Brickyard Station. Organizers are expecting between 450 and 500 children per group, so participating businesses are advised to have plenty of candy ready. After the parade, participants are welcomed back to Surrey Museum Plaza for prize draws. One of the big prizes this year is a night’s stay at the Holiday Inn and Suites for a family of four.

Local crimefighters lauded

By Jennifer Lang A Cloverdale constable has been named one of Surrey’s top Mounties for 2012. The Surrey Board of Trade held its 16th Annual Police Officer of the Year Awards last week. The Police Officer of the Year Award, Nominated by Peers, went to Const. Mark Levesque, a popular member of the neighbourhood liaison unit, who is known throughout the community, whether it’s responding the public’s concerns at the front counter or working with local businesses. Shortly after his arrival at the Surrey RCMP’s District 4 Cloverdale/Port Kells community office, he introduced himself to the businesses community, ensuring merchants knew who he was and to come

forward if they had issues of concern. His commitment and work ethic are credited with enabling him to close multiple theft cases, earning him the respect of his peers. He’s also a familiar face at local community events. Jen Temple, who manages Hillcrest Village Shopping Centre, is another familiar face, particularly in the fast-growing enclave of Clayton, where she’s a proactive champion for the community. Over the past couple of years, she’s helped spearhead anti-graffiti initiatives at the shopping plaza as part of a zero-tolerance approach to this form of vandalism. She’s worked collaboratively with police on several targeted projects aimed at dealing with nuisance behaviour and public disorder.

Do you have CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE LUNG DISEASE?

She also supports and participates in the Youth Intervention Program, which strives to address the underlying causes of criminal behaviour. Temple’s tireless efforts to resolve various ongoing issues are making an impact. There’s been a marked decrease in graffiti and related activity around the shopping centre, reducing the perception of crime and increasing quality of life for area residents. Levesque and Temple were among the 2012 winners at the annual awards, presented Oct. 18 at the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel. The Surrey RCMP detachment is the largest in Canada, with more than 650 officers and hundreds of support staff.

We need your help for a study All subjects will receive several free manual therapy sessions. There is no financial cost to participate. Study duration is 20 weeks. If you are interested in participating in the study, contact the principal investigator.

Golf ’s a lonely road for talented teen By Jennifer Lang Meet Camryn Perry. She’s a 13-year-old who just entered Grade 8 at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary, adjusting to life at a big, new school of 1,900 students. She’s a straight A student, with blue eyes and a warm smile. But unlike most girls her age, she really loves playing golf. She was just 10 when she took up the sport a couple of years ago, and it turns out she’s really good. Her dad signed her

up for a golf camp during spring break, and “at the end of class when he came to get me, I was the only person there, still hitting my golf balls at the driving range,” Camryn recalls. It was obvious she had a natural ability. She kept taking golf classes, and she progressed, growing ever more passionate about the sport of golf. “I just thought that, because I’m really good and stuff, that this is what I’m meant to do.

AUTUMN AT THE FARM!

I’m not really good at other sports,” she says. She’s tried volley ball, played soccer, learned horseback riding. She didn’t like soccer. “I’ve pretty much tried every sport. This is the one sport that I really like.” In the last year, she’s progressed considerably, taking one-on-one lessons from a pro at Golf Town in White Rock, using a golf simulator. She also plays at Hazelmere Golf Club, where she’s enrolled in the junior program.

There’s a whole bunch of other kids, but most of them are boys. She’s ready to get serious. Already, Camryn’s got her sights set on earning a golf scholarship to send her to university – she wants to become a nurse, and would love to play varsity golf. She’d be even better by now, but there’s just one hitch. Although there are junior programs at the local golf clubs the sport seems to lack the organization and structure team youth sports have. Camryn and her parents are increasingly concerned that she’s losing valuable training time she’ll never be able to make up, putting her dream of excelling at golf out of reach. “As a parent, I find this very challenging,” says her dad, John Perry. “For every other form of organized sport, there’s organized teams, and organized practices and organized competitions. Golf, it’s every man for himself – or woman. It’s very,

very frustrating.” He admits there are groups out there, but it’s difficult to “crack the code” so you can find out where competitions are taking place. “So often, you find out three weeks later,” he says. The family was

thrilled to learn there is a junior and senior golf team at Lord Tweedsmuir, but it doesn’t start until March. “You’ve got to practice. It’s a mental game as much as anything else,” says John.

He says people need to start thinking of golf as a team sport, not an individual pursuit. The Perrys want to talk with other parents of teen golfers to compare notes and possibly organize practices and games. (Email the Perrys at surreyjuniorgolf@gmail. com.) Meanwhile, Camryn’s enthusiasm remains undiminished. This summer, she got to meet Inbee Park during the Walk with a Pro day at the 2012 CN Canadian Women’s Open in Coquitlam. She has a signed golf ball as a treasured souvenir. Camryn’s favourite player, Paula Creamer, started golfing at the same age as she – 10, boosting her dreams of where the sport might lead her. And when she’s asked what she needs to do to fulfill her dreams of earning a scholarship, she says: “I don’t know. I need to be much better than I am right now. I’ve gotta keep practicing!”

Katelen Swaine, left, and Tayler Glaspey of Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary pose with Me to We co-founder Craig Kielberger, centre, at an event in Vancouver.

From Me to We to VIPs By Jennifer Lang Two students from Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary got the VIP treatment last week at a “We Day” event in Vancouver, where they met with two of Canada’s best known humanitarians and activists. The Me to We program – founded by brothers Craig and Mark Kielberger – encourages Canadian youth to make a difference in the world by getting involved in socially-conscious projects. Katelen Swaine and Tayler Glaspey recorded a short video outlining water projects on which they would spend $20,000 – if they were chosen recipients of a philanthropic award. As a result, they were invited to a special Me to We Tweet up hosted by Telus. According to their teacher-sponsor, Susan Hunter-Jivung, the girls spoke with passion about helping children in Ecuador have clean water and good sanitation. Both Swaine and Glaspey are active members of Lord Tweedmuir’s Me to We Club. The club’s members are engaged in a number of actions aimed at raising consciousness – and money – for global issues. The club took a field trip Thursday, Oct. 18 to Rogers Arena for We Day 2012, a day of celebration and inspiration for 20,000 young people and their teachers. We Day is presented by Free the Children, an international charity created by the Kielbergers to educate and empower young people to change the world. Inspirational speakers included Bishop Desmond Tutu, Free the Children ambassador Holly Branson, singer and X-Factor judge Demi Lovato, and basketball hall of fame legend Magic Johnson. Last year, the Me to We club raised $2,000 for water sanitation projects and another $2,000 towards leadership training. Throughout the school year, students are involved with a number of local initiatives, including cleaning Greenaway Park each week.
