Community DO YOUR PART! Please remember Grand Forks club promotes safety to recycle your past KARL YU West Kootenay Advertiser
The Grand Forks ATV Club held a play day for seniors on Oct. 20 near Grand Forks, with all-terrain vehicle (ATV) safety demonstrations and of course, ATV rides. Safety is of paramount importance to the club especially given some tragic recent accidents. Earlier this year the Grand Forks ATV Club was granted $25,000 in funding through the federal government’s New Horizons for Seniors program, which is going towards its Get Up, Get Out, Join In, Ride Safe program,
Doug Zorn, vice-president of the Grand Forks ATV Club (left), talks to attendees at the clubs Seniors ATV Play Day on Oct. 20. Karl Yu photo
promoting safe and responsible operation and responsible stewardship. “There are several safety concerns when riding an ATV; as the acronym suggests all-terrain vehicle is more then just riding on a paved surface,” explained Doug
Zorn, the club’s vicepresident. “The roads ATVs are ridden on are not always smooth and flat.” Zorn said the Oct. 20 event was held to help people, particularly seniors, to see what types of ATVs there were and to
provide information. “From single seaters to side-by-sides and two-ups, these are terms ATV enthusiasts use but to the general public might seem odd,” Zorn said. “The club partnered with local suppliers, RHC Insurance and B&F Sales to explain what is required for insurance and what the different types of machines are. There were two expert safety instructors present and a considerable length of time was spent explaining the do’s and don’ts of riding safely, the different types of machines and answering questions.” About 40 people attended.
Oom-pah music and a whole lot more JIM SINCLAIR WKA Editor
It was a short notice affair – a couple of bus-loads of musicians and gear rolling up to the Brilliant Cultural Centre on October 21. The 64-piece brass band had done shows in Vancouver and Seattle before doing another couple in Central Washington State. A Castlegar show was arranged with a phone call from the band’s conductor Andreas Moeschl to local fire chief Gerry Rempel and the date was hastily set. The two had first met when a Moeschl had brought the band to Castlegar in 1994.

Only Andreas and two others present on Sunday night were with the 1994 group. Not a lot of lead time was available and the sparse turnout was the likely result. All the same the well-oiled unit put out a great effort, greatly enjoyed by the 50 or so who had shown up.

News/Finance Local film a worldwide inspiration NELSON STAFF West Kootenay Advertiser
The Change Agents, Nelson’s most recent feature length film, will host its world premiere on Thursday, November 1. Two years in the making, under the working title Project Turquoise Snowflake, The Change Agents is a timely piece set in Nelson which deals with the impacts of the tar sands development on Canada’s dwindling fresh water supply and a growing movement of young people who have something to say about it. This is a fictional story on Carly Dutoff, a 17-year-old with a Doukhobor activist background. Dutoff and her peers find themselves in the midst of family difficulties while coming of age in an era of unprecedented environmental degradation With nuances

With Old Man Winter fast approaching, the thought of spending up to six months in a warm U.S. state or in sunny Mexico during Canada’s cold or rainy winter season is becoming increasingly appealing and popular for millions of Canadian retirees. This trend is increasing every year as Canada’s population ages. “Quality of life” decisions, of course, are the key to enhancing one’s mental, emotional, physical and social well-being. Because Canadians are living and staying healthier longer, retirement could mean another 30 years of life. With proper planning, the snowbird lifestyle can be the most active, stimulating, satisfying and enjoyable experience of one’s retirement years.

from the popular Occupy movement, The Change Agents has received international attention. It is a film whose time, has come. “Test audiences in Europe and Canada have been moved to tears and have been motivated to take action from the film’s message,” says executive producer Jo Ann Lowell. “After we showed the piece in Belgium,
many audience members approached us and asked: how can I become a Change Agent for the planet?” The young ensemble cast is stellar – this low budget independent film features 80 cast members. Unique to the production was the co-creation between mentors and youth. Seventy per cent of the production crew was youth, several
of whom have gone on to careers in filmmaking, after being mentored by film professionals during the production. Associate producer, 17-year-old Alecia Maslechko, says “It opened doors to help me discover what I want to do. I want to become a film producer to be able to get inspiring messages like this out there.”

Considering the snowbird lifestyle SUBMITTED
Debbie Pereversoff CFP CPCA
Many snowbirds leave in early November and return at the end of April, while others don’t leave until the beginning of the New Year. They can have the best of both worlds in terms of climate and enjoy the benefits of both countries. There are many matters to deal with when you are spending up to six months as a Canadian snowbird. You must consider issues such as family, friends, finances, fluctuations in currency exchange rates, investments, taxes, immigration, customs, housing, travel, safety and security, as well as medical and other types of insurance. You also need to give thought to such important matters as money management, financial planning, wills, estate planning, and the need for reliable professionals and
other advisors. Since each person’s situation is different, and because regulations and laws can change at any time, it’s best to get customized feedback from professional advisors. As you might expect, the U.S. is the most popular snowbird location. A common language and culture, familiarity, proximity, and accessibility make it the destination of choice for the vast majority of Canadian snowbirds. There is also an increasing number of Canadians, however, who prefer to spend the winter months in various parts of Mexico, a country rich with culture and diversity. Mexico has several locations that are popular retirement communities for Canadian and American part-time or full-time residents and it is esti-
mated that more than one million Canadian tourists visit Mexico every year. Many choices are available when deciding where to stay in the U.S. with the most popular Sunbelt states being Florida, Arizona, California and Texas. You might want to be based in one area and take short sight-seeing trips or use a recreational vehicle and travel through various states. Depending on your interests and needs, there are many factors to consider such as varied terrain, spectacular scenery and hot weather. Maybe you prefer the ocean, mountains or desert, and like the proximity of city life or rural ambience. Friends could also be a factor, drawing you to one place or another. Continued on P. A23

What’s New with What’s Old?
Rare B.C. mining journal sells online GREG NESTEROFF West Kootenay Advertiser
Another in a series about what’s trading on eBay. An original copy of the October 1896 edition of the British Columbia Mining Record sold for £48 last month (about $77 Cdn). Founded in 1895, and edited by E. Jacobs, this industry journal often featured stories from West Kootenay, then a key mining region. The issue in question mentions the communities of Nelson, Rossland, the Slocan, Boundary Creek, Kaslo, New Denver, Trail, and other places. Originals are hard to come by and highly coveted, especially for their rare photos. For instance, the only known picture of the Slocan suburb of Brandon was published in its pages. It’s also the only place you’ll find portraits of early Kaslo journalist Randall H. Kemp and Kaslo mining company owner Jennie E. Harris, among others. Some issues are available for download in their entirety at archive.org. The magazine changed names several times — it was also known as the Mining, Engineering and Electrical Record — before it folded in 1926.

The seller was in Sleaford, England. • Two postmarks from Retallack, the ghost town between Kaslo and New Denver, recently fetched $75 and $24 Cdn. The former sold for three times as much as the latter despite the fact it was newer — 1953 versus 1931. Retallack was formerly known as Bell’s Camp and Whitewater. The post office operated under the latter name from 18971908 and as Retallack from 1928-55.
Its namesake, Maj. John Ley Retallack, was a member of the North West Mounted Police during the Riel Rebellion. • A 1970 postmark from Oasis, near Trail, sold for $73 Cdn. The post office there operated from 1946-70. • It’s one of the most oft-reproduced images of Nelson: looking west at the 500 block of Baker Street, sometime between 1900 and 1905, with the streetcar going by. Unusual for most postcards, the street

is full of people — as well as horses and dogs. A man wearing a white apron is reputedly Taffy Jack the butcher (after whom a Nelson nightclub was named in the 1990s). Some pictured buildings are still around, like the Burns Block and KWC building, while others are long since vanished, like the Madden Hotel and Broken Hill block. The street is lined with power poles and criss-crossed by a mess of wires. The photo was taken by Queen Studio of Nelson and reproduced on numerous postcards. One that popped up recently was produced by the Canada Drug and Book Co. of Regina, Nelson, and Revelstoke, but failed to sell for the starting bid of $25. Another, nicely coloured version, published by W.G. MacFarlane of Toronto fetched $10.50 US. See photos of the mentioned items at nelsonstar.com.

October is not only the month of cooler weather and colour changing leaves, but the super fun night of Halloween. The Trail BCSPCA wants to give everyone some important tips to make that night safe and enjoyable for your dogs and cats. • Chocolate is a popular candy your kids will receive, but chocolate in all forms in dangerous to your dogs and cats. Please keep candy away from your pets and out of their food bowls. Signs of chocolate toxicity include tremors, nervousness, vomiting and diarrhea. In severe cases, it can also cause seizures and death. If you suspect that your family pet has ingested any chocolate, contact your veterinarian immediately. Teach your kids about the danger of feeding their candy to Fido or Scruffy. Also tell them to not throw any candy wrappers on the floor, because their pets could get sick if they accidentally ate them.
• Costumes are a big NO NO that night unless you know your cat or dog really loves being dressed up. Animals communicate largely by body language and a costume can alter the way they move and they way they perceive other animals they encounter. The last thing you want is an unwanted poor interaction from your pet to another because they cannot properly read them. A festive bandana is more easily worn by your pet, and we are sure they will enjoy their night a lot more. • Kids and adults in costumes can also stress and scare your pets, even when they are normally friendly to everyone they meet. The wisest decision for your pets that evening, is to leave them at home instead of bringing them along for trick or treating. They will be happier for it.
are still at a risk for cruel treatment by some Halloween pranksters. That is why all shelters are very careful adopting out black cats at this time of year. -Identification on your dogs and cats will be vital to their safety on Halloween night. On the chance they dart past you through the open door, their ID will increase their chances of coming home to you safely. If you do lose your pet, make sure to alert the Trail BCSPCA as soon as you can. The contact information for the shelter is 250368-5910 or trail@spca.bc.ca. Lost or found animals may also be reported to bcpetsearch.com. You can also alert your local veterinarian clinics and radio stations just in case as well. The Trail BCSPCA wishes you and your family a very happy and safe Halloween this 2012 season. We hope this article will be a learning tool for all to make sure your Halloween is just that.
• Your front door will be busy all night if you decide to hand out candy to your neighbourhood kids, so keep your pets in a safe and quiet part of your home. Your pets will be far less stressed and comfortable on that night. Sadly, black cats

Don’t get caught in a food marketing trap SUBMITTED
Children are often the focus of food marketing campaigns. Companies view children as having significant purchasing power because of their influence on parents and caregivers. Many of these campaigns influence children’s food preferences, food choices and the products they request and the results are not always healthy. Children are often targeted in the grocery store through packaging, labelling, pricing and product placement. Food products use bright colours, characters, shapes, and flavours to grab the attention of children. Manufacturers pay extra to have their product
located at eye level, at the end of aisles and at the cashier in the hopes that their

attractively packaged products will be noticed by children. Many products marketed to children are high in sugar, fat, and salt. With the increasing rates of childhood
obesity in Canada the food preferences and choices of children is a growing concern. Parents can learn to successfully navigate the grocery store and avoid the lure and temptation of less healthy options for children. Here’s a couple tips to help encourage healthy food choices in the grocery store. Look beyond the flashy claims on the product label. Some food packages contain misleading claims about the product. For instance, a beverage package may use big colourful fonts to draw attention to its high vitamin and mineral content; how-
ever, it may not be as obvious that the beverage also contains lots of sugar because the food manufacturer does not draw attention to this information. Check the Nutrition Facts table, especially the percent daily value and the ingredient list for a more accurate description of what a product actually contains. Bring two grocery lists to the store– one for yourself and one for your child. Make sure the lists include healthy choices. Children can help grocery shop by looking for items on their list. A list will help them stay focused and they will be less distracted
by other products in the grocery store. If children are influenced by labels and placement of less healthy food, divert their attention back to the items still needed on their grocery list. Make sure your child has eaten something before going to the grocery store with you. If necessary, provide a healthy snack to occupy them while shopping. A hungry shopper, whether a child or adult, is more likely to be tempted by unhealthy foods. So next time you and the kids head to the grocery store do a little planning, make some lists and don’t forget to think critically about all those flashy claims right before your eyes.
Vandalism hits churches Grand Forks Briefs United churches in Grand Forks and Greenwood were vandalized in a incidents reported on Oct. 19. Saint John’s United Church in Grand Forks had the words “Paradise or Oblivion The Venus Project” sprayed on the left part of the front of the church in blue and red paint and a similar incident occurred at St. Columba United Church in Greenwood. Saint John’s Church secretary and parishioner Colleen Salikin said members of the congregation would be upset by the act. “The church building is a second home to seniors and it’s almost as if it’s happened to themselves,” Salikin said. “If this truly is advertising for something, could they not have got the word out with flyers or an ad in the paper instead of causing stress and anger amongst people who worship there?”
Ship to sort Beginning Nov. 4, Canada Post will ship all mail sent in Grand Forks to Vancouver to be sorted before shipping it back to Grand Forks to be delivered. It is a move Canada Post said is a cost-cutting measure. “Most of the mail that is coming from Grand Forks now is already going to Vancouver to be sorted,” explained John Caines, spokesperson for Canada Post. “It’s the local mail we’re going to pick up, the same that we’re doing
in Kamloops, Kelowna and other places around the area.” Spooky Swim Celebrate Halloween at the swimming pool in Grand Forks on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. The annual Spooky Swim Super Splash will feature Halloween games and activities and admission is only $2 per person. Stick around for a swim following the event, as the pool is open until 9 p.m. Goodie bags will be given out.

Logging possible in Casino area TRAIL STAFF West Kootenay Advertiser
A forested area in Casino’s watershed is on the chopping block as a referral for comment for harvesting timber has been approved by regional district board. The proposed cutblocks 1.5 kilometres south of Casino are on un-surveyed Crown land in the Regional District of Kootenay
Boundary’s (RDKB) electoral area B, but the fact they are within the community’s watershed has the area’s director in opposition. Linda Worley went on record as opposed to the application in September after the Area Planning Committee meeting, that she was opposed to logging within a corner of the Casino watershed.
“I always have concerns when there is a disturbance or activity in a watershed that could affect a community water supply,” she said. “It is imperative to protect our watersheds from interference which may cause damage now and in the future.” Logging application referrals from the Ministry of Forests are for comment only, said Worley, and the
regional district has no control over the actions of the ministry. Though the applicant – Atco Wood Products – had not provided complete details of the harvest plans, or an estimated date to start, there is a total of seven blocks (100 hectares) to be cut, with one proposed clear cut within the headwaters of the Casino Creek Community Watershed.

This weekend, Rossland would have celebrated the completion of its new downtown core – the street paving, sidewalk smoothing and light fixtures getting installed. But thanks to Monday night’s massive snow dump there’s been a postponement. All of the planned events will go ahead, just check this publication for updates as to exactly when. We’re talking about a ribbon-cutting and community photo on Columbia Avenue-St. Paul intersection near Alpine Grind. There will be a community procession down Columbia Avenue, organizers hope you’ll bring your bikes, strollers, rollerblades to make your way down the street. History will be made when a community photo will be taken near Harry Lefevre Square. “This is a great opportunity for our community to celebrate together and truly become part of Rossland’s history,”
says Rossland Mayor Greg Granstrom. “Thanks to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure for providing us with the opportunity to safely proceed down Columbia Ave and capture everyone in our new downtown.” The community photo will be followed by cake on Washington Street and music at Harry Lefevre Square. Tim Bouchier and the Fabulous Chairs, Golden City Fiddlers and Andrew Bennett and Friends will all be performing. The afternoon will include many other activities such as a Kidzone with bouncy caterpillar, and pumpkin decorating on Washington Street. EZ Rock will be on location in Rossland as well and Rossland Secondary will be having a barbecue in Harry Lefevre Square. Rossland Council for Arts and Culture is doing a community canvas which they hope people will participate in. For those in the community looking for a great volunteer position, there are a

We like to support local needs and this has been made possible with the support we receive from the community at our fundraising events!” The presentation of the water wheelchair has taken place at the Castlegar and District Aquatic Centre on Friday Oct. 19. The first week of “Rossland Reads” kicked off Sunday with four books and their defenders going head to head for who’s book is the one that should be required reading for Rosslanders. Sunday was the first of three meetings at Café Books between the Rossland
Reads debaters. The four books and their defenders are: Treading Water by author Anne DeGrace, defended by Patricia Groulx; The Golden Spruce by John Valliant, defended by Stew Spooner; When it Rains by Laura Cuthbert, defended by Tracey Billet; and The Beggar’s Garden by Michael Christie, defended by Ida
Koric. The next event takes place tonight at 7 p.m. Bessie bringingblues and boogie The seven piece roots and blues band Bessie and The Back Eddies will heat up the stage for a masquerade party at the Rossland Miners’ Hall on Saturday, Oct. 27.
This old school rhythm and blues showband brings with it style and class mixed in with a bit of mischief to the stage. The group features the elegantly powerful vocal stylings of Bessie Wapp and a dynamic three piece horn section and an all acoustic rhythm section. Bessie and The Back Eddies de-
liver a performance that goes from the swing of the big band sound and the grooviness of soulful R&B to the sass of burlesque classics and the raunch of down home blues, with a repertoire that dips into the songbooks of Ruth Brown, Etta James, Bessie Smith, Dinah Washington, and Nina Simone.

Regular Pap testing urged SUBMITTED
Shawnna Taylor cringed at the thought of going for her regular Pap test, so much so that she decided to ignore cervical cancer screening for seven years. Shawnna’s choice seemed justified. She was young and confident she was healthy enough to forego the discomfort and embarrassment that came with a Pap test. One week before her 29th birthday, though, Shawnna would find out just how misinformed her decision had been. Diagnosed with an inoperable cervical tumour the size of a small kiwifruit, Shawnna was thrust into four months of grueling chemotherapy and radiation treatments,
depleting her energy levels and causing intense emotional and physical side effects. One of the most devastating emotional blows Shawnna and her husband received was the news they could never have children. For this year’s Pap Awareness Week, from October 23 to 29, Shawnna wants to warn young women that going for a simple Pap test can potentially save lives and prevent the suffering she was forced to endure.A Pap test collects a sample of cells from the cervix and looks for abnormalities that have a high risk of turning into cancer if left untreated. A Pap test can also identify cancer at an early stage, when there are more treatment options available and cure rates are very
high. The BC Cancer Agency recommends that women start getting Pap tests at age 21. After three annual normal Pap tests, women will be advised to have a Pap test every two years until age 69. To help spread the word, The BC Cancer Agency created a webbased community engagement campaign called the LACE Campaign, also known as “Live Aware. Create Empowerment Women are encouraged to make an appointment with their family doctor for their regular Pap test or go to LACECampaign. com for a list of clinics that offer screening, many that don’t require appointments during the Pap Awareness Week. -BC Cancer Agency

ffor th the
Week
October O ct 26, 2012
It is the time of All Hallow’s Eve, or what is now called Halloween, followed by All Hallow’s Day or what is now All Saints Day. This dual focus was originally a Pagan celebration linked especially to the ancient Celtic/Druidic Festival of Samhain. Technically, this is the mid-point between Autumn Equinox and Winter Solstice. The division of the year by 8, which includes the 2 Solstices and the 2 Equinoxes and the mid-points between each, which in the Celtic Pagan tradition are Imbolc, Beltane, Lughnasdad and Samhain, also share a correspondence with the 8-phase Lunar Cycle. Thus, this tradition observes a parallel between the solar and the lunar cycles whereby each is divided into quarters and eighths. In the Solar Cycle this division corresponds to the 4 Seasons and the mid or peak points of each. In the Lunar Cycle, the New Moon, 1st Quarter (half waxing), Full and Last Quarter (half waning) symbolically correspond to the Solstices and Equinoxes where the New Moon = Winter Solstice, the Crescent, Gibbous, Disseminating and Balsamic Moon’s are parallels to the mid or peak points of the 4 main phases. That Halloween and All Saints Day also occur at 10 Scorpio = death and rebirth, which is the Decant of Pisces = veils and other dimensions, is yet another Astrological correspondence to this time which celebrates the thinning of the veils between incarnate and disincarnate souls. Happy All Hallow’s, the eve of All Saints!

You have entered a powerful cycle of change – a metamorphic process. Cooperation is the keyword, resistance is futile. As you cooperate, any stress, frustration, anger or sorrow and any other emotional disturbance will subside. It can all begin with deep conscious breaths. Key women in your life are playing significant roles.
A deepening of commitments continues. This requires that you give more to your relationships for the sake of harmony. Sharing dreams, visions, goals and plans and perhaps some secrets is likely. Your own needs, desires and ambitions may blind you to those of others. All efforts to listen more intently and respectfully will bring rewards.
Bringing your dreams down to earth and turning them into your reality is a central theme now. A sense of urgency linked to you’re health and overall lifestyle suggests that ‘need’ or ‘necessity’ may be more accurate terms to describe your feelings. Your sights are set on the future and you are open to being more disciplined and making key adjustments to achieve your goals.
Expecting the unexpected has perhaps become more the rule than exception for you these days. A steady flow of change in your public and professional spheres continues. Making extra efforts these days is likely for success. While some things may be really good, in fact better than ever, you still may not feel at peace. Accept this dichotomy and trust the process.
LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)
Things continue to shift and shake close to home. These may be stirring your fears. A growing commitment to realize a more exciting and promising future is leading you to confront long-standing fears. Yet, you also feel adventurous and playful. Visiting foreign places and meeting new and exciting if unique and unusual people is featured.
VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)
Penetrating to core levels implies study, research, contemplation and creative thinking. You are in the mood to re-design things, perhaps your strategy or maybe even your entire life. Renovations of all kinds, from your living space to your beliefs and philosophies are probable and ideal now. Take calculated steps to increase your exposure and advance your career.

The time has come to build upon new and better foundations. With your energy levels and sense of determination running high, now is the time to act. Changes and/or at least ongoing tremors on relationships fronts have you on alert. It is good to be prepared if the need for a quick exit presents itself…. In the short-term, you are in the mood to try new approaches.
You are in the process of breaking new ground. Like a pioneer cutting through brush and blazing a trail, you may feel challenged by the process. Yet, if you accept this task and proceed patiently you will learn a lot and enjoy the journey. ‘Slow but sure’ is the call now. The biggest challenge is to decipher your direction. Follow the path your heart is leading you down.
A good deal of activity behind the scenes is brewing in your world. You may feel the need for retreat. If so, now is a good time to take it. The activity could be a stirring of subconscious thoughts, feelings and intuitions. These will come clearer to light in a few weeks. Balancing inner orientations with outer socializing is the target now.
Rubbing elbows with powerful people and/or gaining many profound realizations are likely now. Hopefully these power players are friends. Returns for past efforts are beginning to come in and should be noticeable. Obtaining new tools, training and/ or and techniques is likely and ideal. Summoning the courage to do ‘inner work’ meanwhile will give you the edge.
AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)
Something is definitely brewing in your public and professional life. New opportunities are available. But to succeed, you must be disciplined and willing to do the work. This is not a short-term task. Pace yourself, yet get going yesterday! Accept this process as a creative challenge worthy of your intelligence.
PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)
You are in a philosophical mood. You want deeper answers than usual. You have embarked upon a rather deep learning curve and it will continue for quite some time. Higher learning of any kind will appeal and you will feel bored and impatient with superficialities. Your confidence levels should be steadily rising; make use of this by both giving and receiving wise counsel.

The result that came is what one small mountain community can do creatively to affect positive change. “There was many a moment when we needed a miracle to move it forward, and those moments I really thought it was the end,” says executive producer Tim Mushumanski. “But then, each time the miracles would happen — it’s like the story has a life of it’s own. It just had to happen... it’s a story that needs to be heard.” The Change Agents is what one generation will do to speak up for a planet in peril. ‘Ghost Salmon’ (concrete/steel) Based in part on regional dam construction that led to the flooding of fertile valleys, and the communities in them, Vogelaar’s powerful sculpture and profound words that accompany it are a reminder about what is lost in the name of progress. It’s quite different from his award winning entry last year titled ‘Venus di Cello’ – a clever cross between the famous, armless sculpture of Aphrodite (circa 130-100 B.C) by Alexandros of Antioch, and a cello – but distinctive still. ‘Ghost Salmon’ effectively melds two of the many mediums he works in to deliver an important message through beautiful imagery. “The salmon are made of thin steel rods so they are really just the frame of a fish, kind of three dimensional outlines,” says Vogelaar. “The hungry bear trying to catch them with no success is solid in form, swatting at fish that aren’t really there. I like the implied contradiction between the real and the illusory.” The bear is constructed by applying about an inch of concrete to a mesh-covered frame. It is stained in natural tones so its solidity is in stark contrast with the hollow fish. All told, the metre high plus sculpture weighs about 800 pounds, but is surprisingly light and airy in appearance. “I’m hoping to achieve the effect that the fish are pass-

ing right through the bear,” Vogelaar says. “He’s frustrated because the salmon are ethereal and ghostly, not there anymore, figuratively and literally, unfortunately. “Progress and development are great things, but we have to consider the impacts our actions have on other creatures. There’s not much benefit to living in a world where nature has been eradicated completely, and regrettably many people don’t seem able to grasp this. They can only see the forest for the trees, to use the old adage.” Vogelaar is obviously passionate about his sculpture, in keeping with his philosophical bent and Slocan Valleycentred lifestyle. Not that he’s reclusive by any means. He has honed his talents over 40 years by taking everyday elements – sand, stone, snow, ice – and creating beautiful

works of art, travelling all over the globe doing so. Some are permanent, others are not. “When I’m working in ice or snow or sand, knowing the fleetingness of what you are sculpting is part of it. I like the ephemeral aspect of it. You’re in the here and now, whereas pieces like ‘Ghost Salmon’ should be around for a while.” For Sculpturewalk viewers and others appreciative of expressive, beautifully crafted sculptures, that’s a good thing.
CASTLEGAR SCULPTUREWALK 2013 CALL TO ARTISTS Castlegar Sculpturewalk is now accepting applicants from sculptors to take part in our 2013 event. Now in its third successful year, Sculpturewalk is a year-long outdoor exhibit of original sculpture by local and international artists. The sculptures are owned by the artists and loaned to the exhibit, where they are available for purchase, lease, and are open for public voting. The winner of the coveted People’s Choice Award will be purchased by The City of Castlegar for permanent display, in addition to a cash prize of $3000. Sculptures will also be judged and awarded on Artistic Merit, with prizes in that category totaling $5000.
The application deadline is October 31, 2012. Entry guidelines and the entry form are available online at http://www.sculpturewalkcastlegar.com/2013-application/

LINEHAUL OWNER OPERATORS
Leonard John Shewfelt Len passed away in the presence of loved ones at his home in North Nelson on Sunday, October 14, 2012. Len will be deeply missed by his wife Yvonne, daughter Janice (Darcy) & grand-daughter Sierra Villeneuve, son Dan Shewfelt (Patti), sister Lil Breen, along with numerous nieces, nephews, friends and extended family. Len was pre-deceased by his parents Roy and Margaret Shewfelt and sisters Irene, Phyllis and Ray. Len began his life in Simpson, Saskatchewan. At a very early age Len’s family relocated to downtown Edmonton, Alberta. Living in the inner-city in the mid 1940’s, Len learned to become street -smart to make his way around the “big city. Picture this short little white/ blond kid running around selling newspapers or operating his shoe shine - that was Len. Len often commented on the “little thug he remembered himself being during his teen-age years and decided that he needed to make some major changes in his life. In May, 1955 Len set off to join the Royal Canadian Navy and was assigned to basic training in Cornwallis, Ont. The Navy had a profound effect on Len and his time in the Navy remained a constant backdrop for his entire life. The Navy brought forth his love of being on or near the ocean, observing all manner of vessels as they came and went, and eventually placing him on his own 24 foot“money pit. An avid traveler, Len continued to nourish his passion for the sea, visiting many world ports and seashores during his travels with Yvonne. It was no real surprise then, that when Len finished his stint in the Navy, he left his landlocked home and the cold winters of Edmonton behind to move closer to the sea and live on Canada’s west-coast Lower Mainland. Len was a very intelligent man and keenly interested in medicine. With initial training in Edmonton, Len became fully engaged with a career in Psychiatric Nursing at BC’s Riverview Hospital, Coquitlam, and went on to spend 25 years in the field of Mental Health. In 1993, looking for a change in lifestyle, Len and Yvonne sold their home in Maple Ridge and purchased the Kokanee RV Park & Campground near Balfour, BC. While adjusting to “Kootenay time Len worked hard on their RV business building new docks, wash facilities, making new friends and fulfilling all other duties of the Camp Commandant. Len and Yvonne sold the RV Park in 2004 and Len fully retired to the North Shore of Nelson. This allowed for some much deserved freedom to enjoy his ongoing passion for golf, cooking, RVing and travel. He particularly enjoyed his annual golf tournament with “the boys and was forever supportive of Yvonne’s independent activities, often saying it was his job to make sure she was properly fed and watered when she came home. Len loved his family and was fiercely protective for their health and well being. Len was especially grateful for his recent re-union with son Dan. Len’s sense of humor and sharp wit will be forever missed but not forgotten. A special thank you to Dr. David Sonnichsen, Cindy and the Palliative care nurses, and, especially to nephew Paddy who came and stayed to help Yvonne fulfill Len’s wishes to have a peaceful & respectful death at home. Cremation has taken place, and there will be no service at his request. A Celebration of Len’s life will take place Saturday, November 10th from 1-3pm at the Best Western Baker St Inn (Kestrel Room), Nelson; memory sharing and story telling at 2pm. A further Celebration of Life will be arranged for July 2013, on the Lower Mainland, so Len’s many friends and extended family there also have opportunity to gather and share memories. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Nelson Red Cross Equipment Loan Program would be appreciated. Everyone has a happy place. Mine is anywhere you are. Arrangements are under the direction of Thompson Funeral Service Ltd. Online condolences may be expressed at www.thompsonfs.ca

Columbia Power please to be recipient of major award SUBMITTED
Castlegar – Columbia Power is pleased to announce they have received the Canadian Electricity Association (CEA) President’s Award of Excellence for Employee Safety, Silver Award Level and the CEA Vice President’s Award of Safety Excellence, Bronze Award Level for Gen-
eration. Columbia Power congratulates its employees and contractors for their safety contribution over the past year. For over forty years, the CEA has tracked the employee safety record of its member utilities. By promoting safety, the CEA President’s Award of Excellence for Employee Safety has assisted CEA
members in meeting their objectives of injury reduction and continuous improvement in overall safety performance. “We are very pleased once again be recognized by the CEA. Safety is truly a core value of our organization and we appreciate the recognition,” said Jane Bird, President and Chief Executive Of-
ficer of Columbia Power Corporation. To receive the CEA President’s Award of Excellence for Employee Safety, Columbia Power was ranked within the top 25 per cent for both the all injury/illness frequency rate and the lost-time injury severity rate. The CEA Vice President’s Award of Safety Excellence was
initiated in 2012 and recognizes the safety performance by CEA member utilities according to their line of business and their size. Columbia Power has a safety management system to effectively manage its responsibilities as an employer and project owner. Columbia Power’s projects include Arrow Lakes
Generating Station, Brilliant Dam and Expansion Project, and the Waneta Expansion Project currently under construction near Trail, BC. Columbia Power is a crown corporation wholly owned and controlled by the Province of British Columbia. Columbia Power’s mandate is to man-
age assets and undertake power project investments as the agent of the Province. For more information about Columbia Power, please visit www.columbiapower.org. For a look at a related photo commemorating the achievement, please visit www.castlegarnews.com and check the community tab.

Community Flu clinics have now begun SUBMITTED
Flu clinics across the Interior Health region have begun. Getting a flu shot is one of the best ways to protect yourself and others from the flu and its complications. Seniors, infants under five and people with chronic illness are most at risk of serious illness or complications that can result from the flu. “Many people incorrectly use the term flu to refer to any illness caused by a virus, such as the stomach flu or the common cold. However, the influenza virus causes illness that tends to be more severe than other viruses,” said Dr. Rob Parker, Medical Health Officer with Interior Health. “Influenza is an infection of the upper airway.
A person with influenza is at risk of other infections, including viral or bacterial pneumonia, which is an infection of the lungs.” Influenza is the leading cause of preventable death due to infectious disease in Canada, killing thousands of Canadians every year and hospitalizing thousands more. Influenza (the flu) spreads easily from person to person through coughing, sneezing, faceto-face contact and by touching surfaces such as door knobs and telephones that have been contaminated with the virus. “People can spread the influenza virus before they show any symptoms at all,” said Dr. Parker. “That’s why it is very important to wash your hands throughout the
day – especially after sneezing, or coughing as well as before and after visiting daycares, hospitals or health-care facilities. And, if you are feeling sick, stay home to avoid exposing others to the virus.” The flu shot is a safe, effective way to reduce the chances of getting and spreading influenza. Those who are not eligible for the free clinics can still get a flu shot. Check with your pharmacist or doctor to find out about getting vaccinated. To find a flu clinic near you, visit http:// www.interiorhealth. ca or call your local public health office (look under Interior Health in the blue pages of your phone book for your local health unit). -Interior Health Authority
Considering the snowbird lifestyle Continued from P. 5
There are free U.S. state tourism booklets and information is available for the asking. Check with your local library for videos of the state and specific city you are considering. Also, speak with other snowbirds in that location. Before making a decision to buy a condo, house, mobile home or RV, you may wish to rent one for the first season to see if you like it. Alternatively, if you have an RV, you can check many places out to see what areas appeal to you. Living in the South during the winter can also be very affordable. In fact, you may find that you come out ahead financially. This is because of the savings from the lower cost of living in the U.S. or Mexico. You can rent a mobile home/RV pad in the U.S. for a small amount, ranging U.S. $200+ per month
based on a 12-month lease. You can buy a used mobile home (fixed in place) in a park for U.S. $5,000+ that could meet your needs. There are some good bargains, especially at the end of the season in April. When you amortize that cost over 10 or more years, it becomes very affordable. You also have use of all the facilities and amenities at a mobile home/RV park, which is generally included in your pad lease fee. Naturally, expenses can be higher in some parks, but you would normally select the type of park or condominium community that meets your budget and other needs. In addition, you save money on heating costs at home in Canada during the winter months. You could be breaking even or paying just a bit more than you would if you stayed at home all winter. This may be true even if you factor in the cost of
your out-of-country emergency medical insurance (for which you are entitled to a tax credit, under the “medical expenses” category of your tax return). This type of attractive economic reality is also a contributing factor to the decision of many to winter in the South. It is wise to evolve into the lifestyle in a step-by-step fashion to see if you like it, so the best thing is to try it for a month or so by renting. Despite all the positive benefits, the Snowbird lifestyle is not for everyone – it is just another retirement dream to consider.
