PRINCE RUPERT - Good ol’ Unit 21301. The 1978 Ford L9000 fire truck, today just a training tool at fire department’s grounds off Forest Avenue, will be sent off for good from town, to start a new life in Peru. The fire truck is being donated via an organization called Firefighters Without Borders (FWB), which provides equipment — from hoses to outfits to, of course, trucks — to countries in South America. This is the first time that Kitimat’s fire department have par-

ticipated in the program. Kitimat Fire Chief Trent Bossence said that he had the idea of donating the truck after a fire chief convention last year. FWB had an information poster up which gave him the details. He was encouraged to pitch in something through conversations with Smithers’ fire chief. The fire department sought and received an endorsement from Kitimat Council for donation, which means all that’s left is to get the truck to Vancouver. Initially planning to get it to Prince Rupert, Bossence says now they might have to drive it to Vancouver, where FWB have

means to get the truck onto ships. The truck in question was taken out of service in 2005 and has been with the department for 29 years. It has since been a tool for fire fighters to train on things like hose attachments and uncoiling hoses. At the Oct. 15 council meeting, Bossence said that the truck has very little re-sale value in Canada. Wayne Humphrey, a firefighter from Vancouver who was in Kitimat last week and is an active member of FWB, said that the fire departments receiving equipment from Canada are under-supported by their governments.

CITY CENTRE MALL Wednesday, October 31 from 3 to 5 pm

“They’re very, very limited in what they have,” he said, noting they rely fairly extensively on donated material. Humphrey has been on a few deployments to El Salvador through the organization and will be in Peru next — that means he’ll likely reconnect with Kitimat’s truck at its destination. The fire truck will be repaired enough to be in service for its use in Peru. Bossence said he remembers driving the fire truck back when it was in service and said that having grown up on a farm he was quite at home with it. “It was a good truck.”

New photo requirements have reduced number of Nisga’a election candidates By Staff Reporter The Northern connector

nation requirements. She was also surprised to learn that existing elected people who wanted to run again didn’t submit photos. “I don’t think it should be grounds for disqualification,” said Clayton. But she did say that in cases where people might have the same names or names with “Junior” and “Senior” in their names, that the idea of requiring photos to be used on ballots might be useful. Greenville council candidate Sylvia Stephens, who is running for a seat for the third time, said she felt bad because of the number of people who couldn’t run, rumoured to be as many as 42. “There were so many people who would have been good candidates,” said Stephens. She also felt that failure to submit a photograph should not be a reason to fail to be nominated. “There are just too many barriers. People

should be assessed by their credibility and their leadership skills,” said Stephens. Stephens, who has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Northern British Columbia and who has volunteered her time as a social services advocate, has also started a Facebook page to carry opinions and views about the election. Ginger Gosnell-Myers, who is from New Aiyansh and is now living in Vancouver, sees the photograph issue as something that can reflect badly on the Nisga’a. “It’s so disappointing. Here we are 12 years into the treaty. It’s something we really fought hard for on the basis we can better govern ourselves,” said Gosnell-Myers. She said there should be no reason why Nisga’a election officials could not have contacted people who did file nomination papers without photos and told them of the new require-

ment. “This is something that is so small,” said Gosnell-Myers. As it is, GosnellMyers said the list of qualified candidates was released later than during previous election cycles, reducing the amount of time people can campaign leading up to general voting day on Nov. 7. Advance polling takes place Oct. 31. Nisga’a national and local government elections have taken place every four years since the Nisga’a Final Agreement came into force in 2000. The local elections are to fill chief councillor seats and village council seats in the four Nass Valley Nisga’a villages of Gingolx, Laxgalts’ap (Greenville), Gitwinksihlkw and Gitlaxt’aamiks (New Aiyansh). There are only two people officially nominated to run for village council in Gitwinksihlkw although there are four seats to be filled. In Gitlaxt’aamiks,

which has seven council seats, only four people are listed as candidates. Aside from the chief councillor spot in Gitwinksihlkw which is set to be filled by Nyce by acclamation, a national seat, that of chairperson of the Nisga’a Nation, is also to be filled by acclamation. Current chairperson Kevin McKay is the only official candidate. Three people are running for president of the national Nisga’a Lisims Government. Incumbent Mitchell Stevens faces Eva Clayton and Charles Morven. Three people are running for treasurer of the Nisga’a Nation, one of whom is incumbent Ed Wright. Two people from Nisga’a urban locals in Terrace, Vancouver and Prince Rupert are also to be elected. In Terrace, those two seats are to be filled by acclamation with just Martin Adams and Phyllis Adams being officially nominated.

TERRACE - New candidate requirements have reduced the number of people running for seats in next month’s Nisga’a national and local government elections. Several key positions are about to be filled by acclamation and in two cases, not enough people have been nominated to fill out village council positions even through this by default process. One of the new regulations, the requirement to submit a photograph with nomination papers, is being touted by some as one of the main reasons potential candidates didn’t make it onto the ballots. anna killen / the NORTHERN CONNECTOR Ron Nyce is the only TERRACE - A Hallowe’en themed person on the ballot for Skeena Middle School bandathon Oct. 17 the chief councillor’s provided the opportunity for this cosposition at Gitwinksitumed individual to conduct a stealthy hlkw. approach behind Skeena band director He said that while he Susan Brouwer. PRINCE RUPERT - A plan to fertilize the waters off Haida Gwaii has brought international attention to the island and the Old Massett council. During the summer, the Haida Salmon Restoration Corporation, with a $2.5 million backing from the Old Massett council, dispersed 100 tonnes of iron sulphate mix into the Pacific Ocean in order to encourage plankton to bloom. With a plankton bloom, the hope was help revive the salmon runs previously seen on the islands. “The Haida Salmon Restoration Corporation is studying and developing methods that may be useful in restoring the growth of phytoplankton and thereby sustain and enhance the production of all marine life and create a sustainable economy for Old Massett,” said the company. Those involved in the project say the work is “lawful, on-going, self-funded and in compliance with the Law of the Sea Convention and Canada’s Ocean

Act”. According to project leader John Disney, the dump took place in international waters and was not significant enough to break international or United Nations law. The group also says it consulted with government officials, including Environment Canada, and consulted with three different lawyers about the project before the ship carrying the iron left the dock. Officials with Environment Canada acknowledge they knew about the plan, but Environment Minister Peter Kent was not made aware of the project until this week. “Environment Canada was not asked to approve this apparent violation of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act,” Kent said in the House of Commons on Oct. 19. Speaking to regional media on Oct. 19, Skeena – Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen said the government doesn’t quite know what to make of this. “The government gave an answer that seemed both neutral and negative at the same

time...There is certainly no policy they have on this geoengineering across the board and if they felt it was illegal or wanted to press charges I’m sure they would,” he said, noting that he met with the council this summer and was informed of their idea but not when it may happen. “People involved with the project thought they were open with the government in talking about their plans. If you’re talking with someone about your plans and they don’t say ‘you shouldn’t do this’ or ‘you can’t do this’ or ‘there will be consequences’ then [proponents] are shocked about the reaction from the feds, which I wouldn’t say is coherent right now... If there were real concerns about this when it was first brought up, the feds would not have let that ship leave dock. They did, which I am sure in some part is condoning this action.” The fact that this is the one that the Massett council chose to promote reflects the frustration of other proposals being shot down by the government, he said.

Final comments on Fairview expansion By Martina Perry THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - On Oct. 16, the Prince Rupert Port Authority’s comprehensive study on the phase II expansion of Fairview Terminal was released, kicking off the final public comment period for the project. The document looks at the expansion in two phases, with the first moving the terminal closer to town and the second expanding toward Ridley Island. Between the two phases, the project calls for the infilling of 11.1 hectare of marine environment, the construction of additional wharf, container yard and intermodal yard space, the removal and relocation 14 rail tracks within the intermodal yard for a total of approximately 14,000 metres of rail, dredging and at-sea disposal, construction of two rail siding that require infilling above and below the high water mark and construction of a

road connecting Fairview Terminal to Ridley Island. Once Phase One of the expansion is complete, though, the Prince Rupert Port Authority envisions up to 10 vessels per week calling on Prince Rupert while the expansion to the south would accommodate up to 14 vessels. The overall capacity of the terminal would be two million TEUs, which is four times the 500,000 TEU capacity the first phase was designed to handle. In terms of train traffic, the expansion toward town would increase to a total of six train movements per day – three inbound and three outbound – while the second phase would see up to 10 train movements per day – five inbound and five outbound. In the report it is noted that nearby residents could be impacted by increased noise, but that construction would be limited in the evening and on weekends when practical, that a website or

e-mail system would be set-up to advise people of night time construction or construction activities, and that work is underway in the background with CN and the City to make the crossings near the ferry terminal and across the highway anti-whistling crossings. As well, the report notes that the road connecting Fairview Terminal and Ridley Island would remove approximately 1,570 truck movements upon completion of Phase One and up to 2,500 truck movements after Phase Two from the streets in Prince Rupert. Public comments can be received by Nov. 16, 2012. After this comment period, the Minister of the Environment and the PRPA will take into consideration the Comprehensive Study Report along with public comments received and issue their respective decisions. Comments can be e-mailed to FairviewPhase2@ceaa-acee. gc.ca

Kitimat Hospice celebrates 20 years in community moments more peaceful is a cause to celebrate. And celebrated it was. Kitimat Hospice invited the community to a get-together at their City Centre Mall office on Oct. 13 for a reflection on their 20 years in the community, and a look forward. KITIMAT - For 20 years now the Kitimat Hospice and Palliative Care Association has been there through people’s most challenging moments. But while death is the tragically unavoidable conclusion to any person’s story, the presence of a group dedicated to making those final

ple who are in their final stages and moments of life, and provide information and support to those who need it. President Frank DaSilveira, who has been with Hospice since 1994, said that it’s entirely understandable that family members cannot always be at the side of an ailing loved one. People need rest and time away. Hospice is there to fill in the gap,

to keep company with people who otherwise might be alone. Many people at the end want someone there for comfort. A Hospice volunteer provides comfort, and also acts as a communicator if the patient cannot communicate for themselves. “Every person should have the right to die with dignity...and not alone,” said DaSilveira. DaSilveira has been

there in a person’s final moments, and he told the gathering at their office that it’s not as terrible an experience for a volunteer as you might expect. It’s also an experience he said helps a person reflect on their own life. That said, he told the Sentinel afterwards that it does take a special kind of character to be

involved in Hospice on that side. It is a “special gift”, he said, to offer compassion at the end of life. “We are always very rewarded by doing this,” he said of his and his wife’s experience with the organization. “I would never like to die alone. So it is what I would like given to me.” Hospice’s office is

on the mall’s second floor, next to the Canadian Cancer Society’s office, and is open three times a week. People are free to stop by to grab information. Around Christmas each year, Hospice also puts up a tree in the mall where people can hang up tags with a lost loved one’s name and turn on a light in remembrance.

Oodles of fun …

The avalanche swept the victim off the 300-meter cliff, while the other man was unharmed. “The problem was the steepness of the slope,” said BC Coroner Barb McLintock, noting it is very early in the season for an avalanche death. Avalanche technicians and mining crews assisted in the search and located the victim. The body was then taken by plane to Stewart, she said. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Changes aimed at unclogging court system By Tom Fletcher The Northern connector

VICTORIA - Attorney General Shirley Bond has launched a new court management system designed to improve efficiency and cut down the backlog of criminal cases. The changes are based on a review of the system conducted by lawyer Geoffrey Cowper, which analyzed a “culture of delay” that resists change. Cowper concluded the problem is partly because there is an incentive, particularly for defence lawyers, to delay cases, and no system for enforcing timely hearings of evidence. “During the review there was a general sense that judges and lawyers have their own, insulated sense of what constitutes timeliness and responsiveness,” Cowper wrote in his report, released in September. Bond announced the first phase of changes, including the establish-

ment of a new oversight organization. “The Justice and Public Safety Council will be asked to publish performance measures, and we’re going to look at designing and determining what those measures are, and there will be targets attached to them,” Bond said at a news conference in Kamloops Monday. Samiran Lakshman, president of the B.C. Crown Counsel Association, said he welcomes the changes to a system that has prosecutors in some communities overwhelmed. “Not every courthouse has a delay problem,” Lakshman said. “We have acute delay issues in the busiest courthouse in the province, which is Surrey, as well as places like Fort St. John, Nanaimo and Richmond.” In Surrey, he said it currently takes 14 months or more to schedule a half a day for a brief trial. Defendants who have waited 18

months or more can apply for and often receive a stay of proceedings because their case has taken too long. Both Lakshman and NDP justice critic Leonard Krog have repeatedly pointed to a reduction of 16 provincial court judges since 2005. Lakshman said the recent imposition of a government-wide hiring freeze has slowed the replacement of prosecutors, sheriffs and court clerks, because each new hire requires approval from the head of the public service. Bond has questioned why waiting time in courts goes up even when the crime rate and the number of new cases declines. She says it should not take an average of seven appearances in court before a criminal case goes to trial. In his report, Cowper noted that 98 per cent of criminal cases end with a guilty plea or a stay of proceedings, but the system treats all cases as if they are going to

Samiran Lakshman, president of the B.C. Crown Counsel Association, says new measures are good for the long term, but more provincial court judges are needed to reduce a backlog of cases. trial. He said the number of new cases dropped sharply last year as most impaired driving charges were replaced with roadside suspensions, and now is at the same level as the early 1990s. “The current rules were the result of a wholesale change made over a decade ago to involve judges more actively in the pre-trial

phase of proceedings to encourage early resolution and reduce the high proportion of cases that collapse on the first day of trial,” Cowper wrote. “Neither prosecutors nor defence counsel changed their practices in order to realize the potential of the new rules.”

Winter tires save lives and money (NC)—Feel that cold air? It won’t be long now until we’re all dealing with sub-zero temperatures and wind chill that takes your breath away. While we can all agree that the prospect of winter can be pretty miserable, being prepared and taking the necessary precautions in advance of the ice and snow is ideal. And one of the best ways of doing this is by switching to winter tires. But according to recent Canadian Tire survey, a majority of drivers in Ontario, the Prairies and British Columbia choose not to install winter tires, mistakenly believing that all-season tires offer adequate safety. The evidence says otherwise. In winter-condition tests, Transport Canada and the Rubber Association of Canada found that stopping was 30 to 40 per cent longer with all-season compared to winter tires. In cornering, vehicles with all-season tires went off the testing track at speeds of only 40 to 50 km/h, while the vehicles equipped with winter tires had no problem. The results were consistent with front-, rear- and all-wheel vehicles. The experts from Desjardins General Insurance (DGI) agree that win-

4526 “The”

ter tires are designed to save lives. “What’s interesting is that many people who live in snow-belt regions across the country recognize the need for them,” said DGI spokesperson Joe Daly. “But some drivers in urban regions don’t see the need to switch. The fact is we’ve all experienced those icy mornings when you’re rushing to work or school and the salt trucks just haven’t made it to your neighbourhood yet. These conditions are much more dangerous than just plain snow and having the right tires can keep every one safe.” The reason why these tires are the most effective at preventing accidents is because they have deeper, specially-designed treads and are made of innovative rubber compounds that are softer and more pliant. This allows them to perform better on ice, snow and slush, but also in both dry and wet conditions when the temperature dips below 7C. Daly also suggests that it’s also important to keep an eye on your tires’ air pressure. “Overnight temperatures can drop from 5˚ to –15˚ and this rapid reduction can zap the air out of you tires by as much as 4 psi. An underinflated tire can be quite dangerous, so

it’s important to keep tracking your tire pressure.” Having a safe winter is a great reason to equip your car with the best tires. Transport Canada suggests that “winter tires marked with the pictograph of a peaked mountain with a snowflake meet specific snow traction performance requirements, and have been designed specifically for use in

winter conditions.” Another incentive is that some insurance companies like DGI will reward their clients who use winter tires with a discount on their auto insurance. How cold weather affects fuel efficiency (NC)—Part of being a smart, safe, fuel-efficient driver includes knowing how to achieve good results even in the worst weather. Did you know, for example, that the combined effects of various conditions can increase fuel consumption more in winter than summer? While it may sound obscure, when you break it down it really makes sense. • Drivers should expect higher fuel consumption in cold weather. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found that a drop in temperature from 24°C to 7°C increased fuel consumption in urban commutes by 12 to 28 per cent. • Aerodynamic resistance is greater in winter. Cold, dry winter air is about 12 per cent denser than warm, humid summer air, increasing highway fuel consumption by about 1.3 per cent in winter.

The average wind speed is also higher in winter, which contributes to increased aerodynamic resistance and fuel consumption. • Winter roads create difficult driving conditions. Roads tend to be rougher in the winter, with increased asphalt deterioration and a mix of snow, ice, slush, water, salt, gravel, and sand. The engine works harder to offset the increased rolling resistance, as the tires must push aside heavy snow and road cover. The snow and ice also increase wheel slippage, which results in higher fuel consumption. U.S. EPA data show that fuel consumption can increase from seven to 35 per cent as a result of poor road conditions, depending on the surface type and snow load. • Winter gas normally has lower energy density. Gasoline composition is season-

ally and geographically adjusted based on historical temperature data. A litre of winter gas has less energy than a litre of summer gas, typically in the range of 1.5-3 per cent. Diesel fuel is similarly affected. • Winter driving taxes the vehicle’s electrical system. Except for using air conditioning on hot summer days, a vehicle’s electrical loads are normally higher in cold weather due to greater demand from heating, defrosting, heated seats, heated mirrors, and increased use of the windshield wipers and washer pump. The energy for these electrical loads is provided by the vehicle’s electrical system, which obtains power from the engine. More winter driving tips can be found on the Natural Resources Canada website at www. oee.nrcan.gc.ca. www.newscanada.com

Forceman Ridge vote plan gets a close thumbs down By Margaret Speirs The Northern connector

TERRACE - An attempt to have a referendum to decide if Forceman Ridge on Hwy37 South should be the location for a new landfill was defeated at the Oct. 19 Kitimat-Stikine regional district meeting. The vote, 6-5 against the idea of having a referendum, took place after some heated discusion over the Forceman Ridge location, a controversial central point in the regional district’s overall plan to reduce the amount of material that’s thrown away. Director Doug McLeod, who represents the rural area that takes in Forceman Ridge, introduced what’s called an alternate approval process. It requires either a poll or for electors to be contacted for their opinion if there should be a referendum on Forceman Ridge. Groups and individ-

uals have criticized the location, saying contaminants will leach into the surrounding countryside, eventually reaching Lakelse Lake. There has been no public engagement, which McLeod said is wanted and would bedemocratic. Director Ted Ramsey, who represents Thornhill, seconded McLeod’s motion. Bruce Bidgood, a City of Terrace representative, asked how much the alternate proposal would cost if it went through and there was a referendum as sought by the public. Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine administrator Bob Marcellin said a referendum or plebiscite could cost $10,000 to $15,000. Ten per cent of electors would have to vote in favour of a referendum for it to be put in place. Directors were told the first issue was to de-

termine who the electors are, which is difficult when you have residents and non-resident electors. An ad letting people know about the vote could be published in a newspaper and could include a cut out ballot for people to send in, said Kitimat councillor Corinne Scott. Marcellin said it wasn’t that easy as only electors could receive a ballot to vote on a referendum. He clarified that the number of electors is not the same as the number of residents listed on the most recent census. Hazelton mayor Alice Maitland said even if someone could fill out a ballot in the paper and send it in, someone at the regional district would have to know who the voters are and with so many electoral areas and two municipalities, it wouldn’t be easy. Bidgood said there

was a potential bias too as people with “activist leanings” would reply to the ballot – those who are strongly in favour or strongly opposed would respond but the silent majority wouldn’t necessarily do that. And for everyone to see the ballot, it would have to be at election time so it’s guaranteed that everyone will see it. Director Dave Brocklebank of Telegraph Creek reminded the board that not everyone has media access, meaning someone would have to go out to tell people about it,

which would add more expenses. McLeod agreed money would have to be spent but said that the board has spent money on other things, such as lawyers, and there wasn’t any discussion on that. “Here is a matter [where we] can consult the public with consequences,” he said. At a meeting on Forceman Ridge this past May, McLeod took a poll of people at the door, and out of the 100 people or so that came, only five agreed with Forceman Ridge. “Let’s ask the public for their

opinion even though it’s difficult. We’ve done difficult tasks in the past, let’s do it.” Voting against McLeod’s plan were Kitimat councillor Corinne Scott, New Hazelton mayor Gail Lowry, Stewart councillor Billie-Ann Belcher, Terrace mayor Dave Pernarowski, city councillor Bruce Bidgood and Hazelton mayor Alice Maitland. Voting in favour were Telegraph Creek director Dave Brocklebank, area around Terrace director Doug McLeod, Thornhill di-

rector Ted Ramsey and Dease Lake alternate director Joey Waite. Nass Valley director Harry Nyce, as board chair, did not vote. Of about 25 audience members who came out to hear what McLeod had to say, and support his idea, most left at this point and one person was heard to remark “What a sham.” The overall plan is to close the city’s Kalum Lake Road landfill and turn the Thornhill landfill into a transfer station. Recycling would be emphasized.

GATEWAY perspectives

Going the distance to prevent spills I want to share a few things with you about the crude oil pipeline industry. Despite what you have undoubtedly heard from various corners of the news media, pipelines are the safest, most economical, and most environmentally sensitive method of transporting petroleum on the planet. Here’s another thing I can tell you — there are no absolutes in life, and that also applies to the pipeline industry. With the Gateway pipeline, we have gone to incredible lengths — extensive geotechnical investigation, special pipe design, tunnels and deep burials — to avoid any possibility of a spill. At the end of the day, however, we can’t guarantee zero spills. No one can. That’s why we’ve also mapped out detailed contingency plans in the areas of preparation and response in the very unlikely event of a spill along the pipeline route. To start with, we announced in July that we will add nearly 100 remotely operated isolation valves along the Gateway twin pipelines, bringing the total to 264 — and we’re continuously updating their locations to ensure optimal placement. That means our control-centre operations staff, and remote pump station employees all

along the line, can shut down and isolate sections of the pipeline at the first hint of a possible leak. Because all our remote pump stations are also staffed 24/7, response to a potential spill will begin immediately. With response equipment stored at those pump stations, our manager of engineering Ray Doering tells me that at least half a dozen local operations staff, joined by additional personnel and local trained response contractors, would be mobilized and attempt to establish containment of any potential leak as soon as possible, based on accessibility. We have designed Gateway to the highest standards of pipeline safety and integrity. Our goal is zero spills. And we’ll still be ready, just in case.

VICTORIA - The B.C. government and the Canadian Red Cross Society today formalized a partnership to deploy disaster management infrastructure, equipment and personnel more quickly and effectively in response to a major catastrophic event or natural disaster. Through this agreement - one of the first of its kind in Canada - Emergency Management BC, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Social Development and the Canadian Red Cross will work together to provide collaborative planning, training and joint exercises that will enhance mutual emergency and disaster response capacity. As well, government and the Red Cross will develop and implement a plan and framework to help ensure the continued timely and effective deployment of Emergency Response Units (ERUs) as temporary resources to assist British Columbia in times of a major or catastrophic disaster. In Canada, first responders and emergen-

cy management organizations already work closely to provide lifesaving activities in partnership with Red Cross. However, in a major catastrophic disaster like the 2011Japan earthquake and tsunami, local response efforts could be overwhelmed. This is when the Red Cross can pull together its extensive resources and expertise. This agreement lays the foundation that could bring in nation-

PRINCE RUPERT - Hoopsters are in full swing at the Third Annual Tribal Nation Tournament at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre in Prince Rupert. The tournament, which kicked off on Thursday, will wrap up on Sunday with the finals. “I encourage everyone and anyone to come down and enjoy a weekend of good basketball for the third annual Tribal Nation Tournament,” Conrad Lewis, organizer, said. Lewis has organized basketball tournaments in the region for 30 years. This includes the annual Festive “C”son Challenge which in 2013 will be the 22nd annual, and the Jim Ciccone Memorial 3-on-3 Challenge which will be the 15th annual next year. Lewis created the TNT three years ago, and hopes it continues to establish itself. “People felt there was a need for a tournament in the early part of the season to kick start it, and to give them motivation to start training earlier,” Lewis explained. This year, teams from Prince Rupert, Lax Kw’alaams, Kitkatla, Kitimat and Bella Bella playing in divisions including Senior Men, Intermediate Men and Women. Lewis hopes the tournament continues to grow to the point where teams from all over compete in it. Lewis has contacted teams in other provinces and the United States, however at this point they haven’t entered. “In the future we’ll be looking into expanding,” Lewis said, acknowledging the tournament is still establishing itself. Admission fees to watch games in the tournament are moderate, says Lewis. “Given the economic status at this point, we want to make sure it’s affordable for families to come and enjoy some really great basketball.” Basketball fans can watch a session of games or purchase a day pass or a tournament pass.

TERRACE- A healthy pack of volunteers and a whack of keen participants helped the 3rd annual Terrace Rod and Gun Club Bike Biathlon ride steady on Saturday, Oct. 13. More than 30 competitors, and nearly as many volunteers, came out for the event, which saw competitors bike and shoot their way to the finish line at the Terrace Rod and Gun Club on Rifle Range Rd. “It went very well,” said organizer Chris Schooner. “We had a great number of volunteers – people just came out of the woodwork. And there were more competitors than we thought.” “A number of the competitors also filled in some needed jobs while others were racing,” he said. “An excellent showing of true sportsmanship.” The weather held up for the most part, as competitors raced the forest route, stopping in between laps to shoot at different levels of targets. Although, one heat did get hit with “what we might call a monsoon,” said Schooner, who noted they had to drain the rifles afterwards. And with three coaches now trained, the Rod and Gun Club is starting its Biathlon Bears program this Saturday, Oct. 27 at 9:30 a.m. for ages 8 - 16. It is a program similar to Can-Ski or Can-Skate programs for youth to learn the sporting skills needed for biathlon. For more details, call 250-638-8270. Here are the top finishers: Midget Boys and Girls 10 years and younger: 1. Braden Clunas 2. Thomas Dame 3. William Edmond; Recreational 25 m targets 11-13: 1. Liam Clunas 2. Chance Soden 3. Tyler Henry; 11-13 50 m targets: 1. Jonus Lecuyer 2. Levi Dame 3. Liam Tweedie; Recreational 17+ 25 m targets: 1. Angela Rabut 2. Michael Bruce 3. Lia Wallace; 17+ 50 m targets: 1. Ryan Gordon 2. Demons stomp Stampeders but bounced by Kangaroos By Contributed THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

KITIMAT - The Kitimat Ice Demons split two weekend games on the road, Oct. 13 and 14. They had a smooth-skating and convincing win-over-win over old nemesis the Williams Lake Stampeders 5-2, on the strength of three power play goals and a hat trick performance by Brandon Wakita on Saturday. And, for two periods it looked like as if the Demons could take another game in Quesnel Sunday, but a couple of late defensive lapses allowed the Kangaroos to come back for their first win of the season, 4-2, with three unanswered goals in the third period. With two wins in their first three games, the Ice Demons sit first in the western division as the Smithers Steelheads survived a late rally by the Terrace River Kings to win 5-4, while the Prince Rupert Rampage had a tough road trip losing 9-5 in Lac La Hache to the Tomahawks and then 7-1, Sunday, as the Stampeders came alive. Although Kitimat were missing some key players on the weekend, they got off to a flying start with two power play goals in the first – one by Brandon Wakita (Derek Wakita, Jeff

Mildenberger) just under nine minutes into the game and Ian Coleman (Jeff Baker, Derek Wakita) five minutes later. The power play struck for the third time as Brandon Wakita scored the second of his three on the night on a nice set up by Derek DeLisser just 2.06 into the second period. The Stampeders seemed to wake up at that point, seeing the game slip away and retaliated quickly with Nathan Zurak scoring just 47 seconds later, assisted by Matt Lees and Brent McIsaac. The Stampeders seemed to be clawing back into the game with a second goal by Stu Sasges (Lees and McIsaac) but Derek DeLisser got that one back very early in the third (Josh Slanina, Kyle Madsen) and Tommy Mildenberger, playing his first game in goal for the Ice Demons held the fort the rest of the way, stopping all 11 of the Stampeders shots in the period, while Brandon Wakita’s unassisted hat-trick goal at the 10:10 mark of the period beat Justin Foote to restore the Ice Demons three goal lead and suck the fight out of the Stampeders. On Sunday, the Demons had a solid start and led 1-0 at the end of the first as Brandon Wakita (Ian Coleman, Nick Markowski) kept up his torrid scoring pace.

This was a rough game, with lots going on behind the scenes, but few calls (only 16 minutes in penalties, four minors to each team, but the visitors still held the lead at the end of the second period with Curtis Gassoff (Justin Fulton, Braydon Penner) tying the game at 1-1, at the 3.34 mark of the second, before Derek Wakita responded (Jeff Mildenberger, Scott McGregor) three minutes later to restore the one goal advantage. But the Demons wilted under pressure in the third period as goals by Levon Johnson (Justin Fulton) pulled the Kangaroos level, at 8:31 and the visitors had no answer for an eighth minute goal by Brolin McGowan (Joel Boyetchko, Dominic Tomassetti) and another at the 16:37 mark of the third by Devon Whalen, also assisted by Boyetchko and Tomasetti. The Ice Demons had Tyson Craven in net in Quesnel. Craven stopped 24 of 28 Kangaroos’ shots, while Ryan Manderson held the fort in the third period, stopping all Demons shots in the third. Demons had a total 24 shots in the game. For other Saturday-Sunday scores, see scoreboard entries on Pointstreak, accessed online from cihl.info.
