Your Urban Roots Skin Care Specialist
Kimberley
Skin Care Specialist/Esthetician
DO YOU KNOW the difference between GM Collin skin care and a line you can purchase over the counter? Although the over the counter skin care lines are good they are not active, they sit on top of the skin. An over the counter skincare line is not allowed to have any reaction, meaning, “one size fits all”. They are not allowed to cause a reaction of any sort, it cannot penetrate the dermis and work on your skin condition. Skin conditions are considered Acne, dehydration and aging to name a few. At Urban Roots we have a skin care line made and manufactured in Montreal, allowed to be sold by prescription, an esthetician or a doctor, someone that knows the skin and its different layers. GM Collin is a dermo corrective skin care line that is designed to penetrate the dermis and work outward; it will regulate the sebum production, kill the bad bacteria and hydrate the skin. We have a variety of different GM Collin products to combat your skin condition concerns and begin to change the skin using our home care and clinical treatments. GM Collin is a competitively priced line with unbelievable results, once you get your skin analysed by a professional we can begin to reverse the signs of aging, correct adult or teenage acne, change the tone and texture of your skin within a matter of days or weeks. Urban Roots has been selected by GM Collin to sell, prescribe, and treat, along with the home care you can look and feel years younger with GM Collin. We have many different products that will work naturally with the skin to help heal and hydrate. Contains no perfumes or other filler ingredients, only corrective skin care from Retinol to healing ceramides. Call and book your appointment today to meet one of our trained skin care professionals and get on a program that matches your skin care needs and concerns. Teenagers and their parents are welcome for a free skin care assessment.

The best way to grow out your hair is to minimize damage and continue to get regular trims. If you colour your hair, a professional stylist will formulate your colour to minimize damage. And don’t skip the trim! This is a big mistake, why? Ends will start to split and you’ll have to cut the damaged hair anyway, what’s the point of having long hair if it isn’t healthy and beautiful looking. Every 8-12 weeks is recommended for your trim. If you use any hot tools, be sure to use a heat protective product. Longer hair gets drier at the ends than shorter hair, so in addition to regular conditioning at home, see your stylist every two months for deep conditioning treatments to keep hair strong and healthy looking as it grows out. Book this treatment with your trim.

1- WE CREATE A MORE DYNAMIC BUSINESS CLIMATE Success leads to success. The more prosperous businesses we have, the more the local climate will encourage other entrepreneurs to set up businesses and create still more jobs. 2- WE GAIN MORE PROPERTY TAX INCOME TO INVEST IN OUR INFRASTRUCTURE The more thriving businesses we have, the more they will be able to expand. The more they expand, the more property and business tax they will pay, generating money that can be used for the good of our town and our citizens. 3- WE IMPROVE SERVICES A prosperous local economy is conducive to improvements in social, medical, and sports and liesure services, as well as in tourism, the arts, and entertainment. 4- WE HAVE MORE CHOICE AND A WIDER VARIETY OF PRODUCTS The sales figures of a business reflect its financial health, and when business is good, expansion projects multiply. Expansion brings new products and new services to our community. 5- WE BENEFIT LOCAL COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS Non-profit organizations receive many donations from local business people. Donations are essential to their survival, so it follows that the healthier the economy, the healthier our organizations.
6- WE MAINTAIN THE UNIQUE CHARACTER OF OUR TOWN AND REGION The charm of a municipality is in its dynamism and character. Those go hand in hand with its economic health. A municipality that can count on its population to buy locally is a muncipality to be envied. 7- WE CREATE MORE JOBS IN OUR TOWN AND REGION A thriving job market depends on the economic health of our region. 8- WE HAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT Local enterprises purchase a lot more local products, greatly reducing the transportation of products from outside the region. 9- WE SUPPORT OUR REGION IN THE SEARCH FOR INVESTORS If our region has a dynamic economy, it is bound to attract investors. If our municipality receives revenues from business and property taxes, it can work to attract investors as well. Investors are like consumers: they are attracted to regions that are attractive! 10- WE INVEST IN OUR REGION For all the reasons listed above, buying local is logical, beneficial, and highly efficient. Buying local creates the economic leverage that is vital to the dynamism of a region. By working together we can support our local economy.

The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) is a group of involved youth from around the Columbia Basin who provide advice to Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) and a youth perspective on a variety of issues facing today’s youth. Members—called YACers— commit to a one-year term and have an opportunity to meet, work and travel with a group of like-minded young people. “We work with youth and communities to increase youth opportunities and engagement,” said Michelle d’Entremont, CBT Youth Liaison. “Being a member of YAC is a great way for youth to develop their leadership skills, engage with CBT and provide input on issues that are important to them.” Welcome to new members: Curtis Bendig (Nelson), Darelyn Hutchinson (Cranbrook), Laura Kanik (Revelstoke), Paniz Khosroshahy (Cranbrook), James Klemmensen (Rossland), Danika Reid (Cranbrook), Bailey Repp (Nelson), Wesley Routley (Golden) and Theresa Thoms (Castlegar). The new members are excited about joining YAC and looking forward to making a differ-
ence in their communities. “To me, being on YAC is so different from any other club or team,” said Bailey Repp of Nelson. “Being able to provide and empower other youth with huge opportunities to drive change has to be one of the best feelings one can have.” “I am very passionate about youth issues and work hard in my community to give youth a voice,” said Darelyn Hutchinson of Cranbrook. “It’s a wonderful feeling to get to be a part of the decision-making process with youth grants, and the fun process of inspiring youth and getting inspired myself.” Welcome back to returning members: Sierra Franklin (Canal Flats), Blake Nicol (Nelson) and Taryn Walker (Revelstoke). What did past YACers have to say to new members? “You will be surprised by the welcoming feel the YAC committee has to it and how quickly you become part of the group,” said Blake Nicol of Nelson. “Before you know it, you will find yourself having a great time!” Said Taryn Walker of Revelstoke, “Through YAC you feel more confident about your abil-
ity to give meaningful input. You find yourself stepping outside of yourself and considering others’ perspectives while developing skills you never knew you were capable of.” Prospective YACers go through an application process and are selected to volunteer on the committee by the previous year’s committee members. The commitment involves a weekend meeting every two months which includes the review of Columbia Basin Youth Grants applications–a task that is unique to this CBT advisory committee to further promote the active engagement of youth in regional decision-making processes. CBT supports youth and communities through a range of programs such as the Community Directed Youth Funds and Columbia Basin Youth Grants, as well as by providing a forum for Basin youth to share their art, ideas and experiences with each other through SCRATCH magazine. Visit www.cbt.org/youth for more details.

Protecting yourself from influenza by visiting a local flu clinic Flu clinics across the Interior Health region have begun. Getting a flu shot is one of the best ways to protect yourself and others from the flu and its complications. Seniors, infants under five and people with chronic illness are most at risk of serious illness or complications that can result from the flu. “People can spread the influenza virus before they show any symptoms at all,” said Dr. Parker. “That’s why it is very important to wash your hands throughout the day – especially after sneezing, or coughing as well as before and after visiting daycares, hospitals or health-care facilities. And, if you are feeling sick, stay home to avoid exposing others to the virus.” Influenza is the leading cause of preventable death due to infectious disease in Canada, killing thousands of Canadians every year and hospitalizing thousands more. Influenza (the flu) spreads easily from person to person through coughing, sneezing, face-to-face
contact and by touching surfaces such as door knobs and telephones that have been contaminated with the virus. Flu shots are available at free flu clinics for: • People 65 years and older and their caregivers/household contacts • All children age 6 to 59 months of age • Household contacts and caregivers of infants age 0 to 59 months of age • Children and adults with chronic health conditions and their household contacts • Aboriginal people • Children & adolescents (6 months to 18 years) with conditions treated for long periods of time with Aspirin® or ASA and their household contacts
• Residents of nursing homes and other chronic care facilities • Pregnant women who will be in their third trimester during influenza season and their household contacts (pregnant women who are in other high risk groups can be immunized at any time during the pregnancy) • People who are very obese (BMI > 40) • Health-care and other care providers in facilities and community settings who are capable of transmitting influenza disease to those at high risk of influenza complications • People who provide essential community services (First Responders, Corrections Workers)
• Inmates of provincial correctional institutions • People who work with live poultry and/or swine
• Individuals who provide care or service in potential outbreak settings housing high risk persons (e.g., crew on ships)
To find a flu clinic near you, visit http:// www.interiorhealth.ca or call your local public health office (look under Interior Health in
the blue pages of your phone book for your local health unit). Information is also available at www.immunizebc. ca.

Pros to know
automobile sales professional
A qualified professional makes all the difference for a pleasant, worry-free experience.

An automotive purchase is often times one of the single largest purchases an individual is likely to invest in. With this in mind, it is easy to understand the importance of dealing with a sales professional that has been trained in both the legal aspects of a transaction as well as the product that he or she represents. Here in BC, the Motor Vehicle Sales Authority instituted a licensing program for vehicle sales people. In order to be issued a license you must pass a criminal record check, be of legal age (19 & over), successfully complete the Level 1 Salesperson Certification Course and be employed by a licensed motor dealer. Ask your sales person if he or she has been certified. If so, they will have a license to show you. This qualification ensures the salesperson has been trained in the legalities and ethics of vehicle transactions for your peace of mind. The best salespeople are those who engage in ongoing product knowledge training. Chrysler’s product knowledge program is on going to keep up with the technological advances constant in the industry. Along with Dodge, Jeep and Chrysler’s products, this program also teaches about all of the competitor’s products in order to make a fair comparison. Sometimes, seemingly small things make all the difference in the overall service and satisfaction of your vehicle. A knowledgeable salesperson will identify this for you. Jase Clear has demonstrated his dedication by achieving Chrysler’s prestigious Sales Excellence Award which honors outstanding sales achievement, product knowledge and customer satisfaction. A sales professional realizes that the deal doesn’t end with your signature. That’s just the beginning. A thorough delivery will answer your questions regarding the complete operation of your new vehicle for your safe operation. Your salesperson is also a valuable ally once you’ve taken delivery to introduce you to the service department and the entire operation. After all, it’s in his or her best interest to keep you smiling and satisfied in the long term, for future business and possibly referrals. Truly a win, win situation.

Today’s cars and trucks have more computing power than the spacecrafts used in the Apollo missions! The “shade tree mechanic” is no more. Today’s technician is in a demanding and rapidly changing profession. To stay in a very competitive industry, a shop must be committed to investing in technology, quality service and exceptional customer relations. The best time to check out a repair facility is before you need one. Ideally, take your vehicle in for minor service, such as an oil change or tire rotation. Use this opportunity to look over the service area, note the equipment used and talk to service personnel. Licences-Repair facilities must have a journeyman automotive technician on staff at all times. Qualifications should be posted in plain sight, as should municipal licences. Do not do business with a facility that is not licensed. Appearance-A clean, well-organized facility reflects attention to detail and an effort to maintain a professional image. Amenities-The facility should have a comfortable waiting area. Many shops now provide additional services for the convenience of customers that may be beneficial. Equipment-A good repair facility will have up-to-date equipment and information for a wide variety of makes and models. Some shops choose to specialize and this may limit their ability to work on all types of vehicles. Recommendations-Ask your family and friends about their experiences. Were they charged the price they were quoted? Was their vehicle ready when promised? Were they treated courteously? Were all questions about the repair answered thoroughly? Ask about the shop’s warranty. Most repair facilities will warranty their parts and labor either in writing or in shop posted announcements. To receive the most beneficial and accurate vehicle repair, you the customer must provide the clearest and most comprehensive information possible. You know your vehicle and will be the first to know when its performance changes. You also know your vehicle’s repair and maintenance history. The more information you can share with a repair facility, the better prepared they are to identify problems. Don’t be embarrassed to ask questions. Before you leave, be sure you understand all shop policies regarding diagnostic fees, labour rates, warranties, time lines, methods of payment and whether or not you can have the parts that were replaced.
mortgage broker The benefits of using a professional mortage broker
Finding the right home may seem like the hard part of a real estate transaction, but in reality, getting the best financing can be much harder. This is partially because we have so many options nowadays for mortgage loans and so many places to find them. Using a mortgage broker is by far the best way to go about finding and arranging the very best mortgage to suit your specific needs. Trust in a mortgage broker that knows how to package your application, what pitfalls to look out for. The benefits of using a professional mortgage broker include: Reduce your stress and frustration. There are dozens of lenders from which to choose, so why not let an expert handle the application process for you? These days the forms and other data that are required for a loan application can be quite complicated, so it is wise to hand the entire process over to a professional. Fewer complications. A seasoned mortgage professional will have years of experience, and that will help him or her navigate the tricky loan application waters that lie ahead. Let a broker’s know-how work to your benefit. Help you get the best deal possible. Although you may be tempted to apply for the mortgage on your own, by hiring a professional you are assured of getting the best interest rate, the best payment plan, and the best deal in general. Save you time. The most valuable of all commodities. A broker has the experience to make sure you get the best package for your individual needs. Real personalization. Since the mortgage broker works for you (not the lenders), he or she offers you unbiased advice and helps you select the mortgage that’s absolutely right for you. You get the personal service you just cannot get from a bank.

It demonstrates their commitment to providing you, the borrower with the highest level of service while finding the best mortgage solution suited to your needs, explain all of your mortgage options and provide mortgage peace of mind. You’ll feel at ease when dealing with a mortgage broker who has met a higher standard of ethics and is committed to ongoing training.

OBITUARY
Magee, Doreen (Ma) Yvonne November 23, 1938-October 23, 2012 The family of Doreen regrets to inform you that she has went to be with the Lord, one month shy of her 75th birthday. She was born to Ike and Norma Haynes in Buck Lake, the oldest of 3 girls. She married the love of her life, Roy Magee in 1955 and happily raised five children: Cindy, Bo, Terry, Keith and Maryann. They moved to Cranbrook in 1977, she worked at K-Mart and later at Canada Post until her retirement. She had a variety of interests but softball and slowpitch were her passions. She became known as "Ma" to anyone who was every anywhere near a ball field. Her strong Christian belief and values shone through in the unselfish way she treated those who knew her. Family was very important to her and every house was always turned into a home filled with love. She loved gatherings when she was surrounded by her family and always took the extra step to try and make things special. She leaves behind many memories of love, kindness and gentleness. She is survived by husband Roy, daughters Cindy, Terry (Denis), Maryann (Dick), and daughter-in-law Linda, grandchildren Jesse (Rachael), Jason, Leah, Kristin, Chelsey, Dorian (Chris), and Shayley, greatgrandchildren Caitlyn, Cody, and Gia. Predeceased by sons Bo, Keith and son-in-law Paul, sisters Lorna and Ann. Services were held at the Alliance Church in Cranbrook at 2:00 pm, Saturday, October 27, 2012.

Peter Relkoff Dec 1, 1937 to Oct 22, 2012 It is with great sadness that the family wishes to announce the sudden passing of Peter Relkoff. Left to mourn is his wife of 39 years, Adele, daughter Yvette, sons David and Paul (Kelley) and grandchildren Owen and Paige his true best friends. Peter was predeceased by his parents Polly and Mike Relkoff, siblings Annette, Liz, Mike, and Nina. He is survived by his brother Sam and numerous nieces and nephews. Peter was an enthusiastic and courageous man with a life that had two true passions, family and volunteering. Peter had always been regarded as the greatest husband, dad and more recently grandpa. He could spend hours on the floor playing whatever game the kids asked. He loved anything and everything we did as a family. Peter was a well known volunteer within the community and volunteered for many things including, Fernie Ski patrol until 1980, Cranbrook Ambulance Association, and the Chamber of Commerce tourist information booth. He also was a founding member of Cranbrook Search & Rescue continuing to participate for 36 years in Highway Rescue, Searches, Training, and Fundraising. He recently taught Rope Rescue at the COTR Fire Services Training Program. Peter’s hobbies included wood working, hiking, gardening and talking to people. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. In lieu of flowers please greet your friends with a cheery smile and tell them a story. This was one of Peter’s greatest pleasures. “Many people will walk in and out of our life but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart.” Eleanor Roosevelt. A special thanks to those that helped Peter in the coffee shop, the amazing Firefighters, the paramedics, and the staff at the Hospital. We can’t thank you enough! A Funeral Service was held at Christ the Servant Church on Saturday Oct 27 .

“I liked the company so much, I got myself hired!
Over the years, I’ve dealt with Cranbrook Dodge and purchased numerous vehicles. I was always treated respectfully and in a professional manner, which explains why I kept coming back. My sales and service experience re-inforced in my mind that if I ever got into the auto industry, I’d love to work for a company like this. Well, lo and behold, here I am. Those of you who know me understand how strongly I feel about giving back to the community I was born and raised in. My involvement over the years with organizations like the Kinsmen, Sam Steele Days, Muscular Dystrophy Telethon and as an advocate for seniors has been rewarding. If you expect your community to support you, it’s only right to give back. I’d like to invite family, friends and past colleagues to stop by and see me. My goal is to make my customer’s experience satisfying and fun. As I’ve said many times -your customer is your employer. Come see me. I’d like to conclude with It’s a pleasure doing business with you.

Adapted Technology class builds a Play Structure!
Principal Message
In partnership with the Tobacco Plains Indian Band, the Adapted Technology class at Mount Baker has built a play structure. This structure has been placed at the Big Springs Campground at Lake Koocanusa. This is a beautiful campground being developed by the Tobacco Plains Indian Band. This project started as a result of the Adapted Technology class building the play structure in exchange for project material for students at MBSS. This
project began last May and was completed this week. The structure is built from wood milled at the Tobacco Plains Indian Band Sawmill in Grasmere. The design includes: a tire swing, climbing wall, slide and covered tower. There is also a ladder to climb up and down to the tower. The entire class travelled on 2 busses to the site to set up the structure. Cindy Currie and Ray Joubert represented the Tobacco Plains Indian Band during the set up on site. This project

We are very excited and appreciative to have this space in The Advertiser, as we are trying different ways of improving our communication to the homes of our students. Along with this space, we are also ensuring that the messages on our website are updated daily. If you need to know what is coming up at Baker, check out the messages and calendar on the website! Our newest communication initiative is to collect emails from each family and create grade-level databases to keep parents informed. Notices home such as Newletter and Grad announcements would come to your email. To facilitate this, we have included an email ‘permission slip’ in the October contact information sheet we sent home. If you didn’t get it, just email or drop by the school with your email information, and we will get you on the mailing list. Let us know how we’re doing! -Jason Tichauer

MADD Canada’s school assembly programs bring high-energy drug and alcohol impaired driving awareness and risk reduction messaging to the world of education. Youth and school programming have been a key component of MADD Canada’s youth services, education and awareness initiatives since 1994. The programs are designed to communicate directly with young people on their level and in their language and encourage them to take a closer look at their values and perceptions. Mt Baker students in grade 11 & 12 were part of this program recently.

The Holistic Approach we Promote at Sattva Training Centre Sattva Training Centre is not only about working out even though it is one of our specialities. Working out, especially lifting weights creates micro-fissures in the muscles: you aren’t stronger right after your workout, you are in fact weaker. It takes two days on average for our bodies to repair these micro-tears and to become truly stronger than prior to the workout. Working out is energy that we spend and at the Aurélie Chek Institute we learn that working Wiedemann in (gathering energy) is just as important as working out. Working in can be done by meditating, by practicing Tai Chi or Yoga, by resting, or even by walking quietly in nature while appreciating the surroundings and being here and now. Just like the “Ying” energy balances itself out with the “Yang” energy, it is important to balance our bodies to “work in” as much as we “work out”. Similarly, we need to harmonize ourselves with our natural sleep and wake cycles. With all the technology we have access to nowadays, we tend to stay up later at night: we watch TV, we surf on internet, we play video games etc. However our bodies have been designed to be active during the day and to rest at night. If our sleep and wake cycles are normal our bodies should produce most of our stress activating hormone (cortisol) in the morning, decrease production in the afternoon, and reach lower levels when the sun sets. If we go to bed on time, our bodies produce the growth and repair hormones that are necessary for us to rest properly. In a disrupted sleep and wake cycle, we produce stress hormones for prolonged periods of time in greater quantities than necessary and there aren’t enough growth and repair hormones produced to balance it all out. The problems: • Drinking caffeinated beverages throughout the day increases stress hormones. • Staying up late at night surrounded by bright lights encourages our bodies to continually produce cortisol since it misinterprets light as sunshine. • Sleeping only 3 to 4 hours a night isn’t enough for our bodies to repair themselves. • Cell phone radiation, wireless internet, cordless phones and too many electronics in the home can disrupt the sleep and wake cycles of those more sensitive (ref: “How to eat move and be healthy” by Paul Chek). The solution: • Try to avoid caffeinated beverages after 4:00pm. • Dim the lights in the evening read a book instead of staying in front of the computer or watching TV all evening. • Try to sleep about 6-8 hours per night (depending on your body’s requirements). • Turn off your wireless network as well as all electronics before going to bed and don’t keep your cell phone/computer in your bedroom. It’s all about balance!
