The Princeton Exhibition Grounds swarmed with approximately 700 (or so) people on Saturday, Oct. 27. Organizers of Halloween Family Fun Night, Jennifer Bernard and Dawne Graves hosted the second annual event which has grown in both the creative processes and attendance from last year. The Princeton Highway Extrication crew ran the popular three legged obstacle race. Local R.C.M.P., B.C. Ambulance Service and Princeton Volunteer Fire Brigade personnel walked the grounds and passed out treats to children. The Princeton Fire Brigade manned the bonfire as well. Double J P.S.Y.C.H.O.S. Concession crew were on hand cooking and serving burgers, hot dogs, fries and onion rings, all compliments of; Princeton Rodeo, Little Britches Rodeo, Princeton Racing Days and the Princeton & District Agricultural

For more than 136 years, Service BC’s government agents have been serving Princeton and area residents. After 84 years of service on Vermilion Avenue, as of Monday, Oct. 29, the Service BC Centre has officially reopened at its new location, #10 - 136 Tapton Avenue. The new location offers much better access for individuals with disabilities requiring wheelchair and scooter use. It is larger, brighter and also provides room for B.C. Parks and the Ministry of Forests to work out of when they are in the area. Conservation Officer, Ann Marie Gorecki and National Resource Officer, Ray Senger are working out of the new location as well.

RCMP issue scam warnings and ask the public to report accordingly Princeton RCMP would like to caution the public of an ongoing scam known as the “Mystery Shopper� Scam. If you have received a letter in the mail stating that you have been hired by Vulsay Industries to participate as a “customer service evaluator�, please note that this is a scam. The “mystery shopper� scam is still victimizing Canadian Consumers. The victim answers an enticing ad to become a mystery shopper. The “employer� sends a letter, with mystery shopping tasks to be completed, and a cheque to help the victim fulfill their mystery shopping tasks. The victim will first cash the cheque they were given. One of the tasks
will be to use a money transfer company to wire a large portion of the money to a mane provided, in order to test the company’s procedure and customer service skills. The victim will find out later that the cheque is counterfeit, thus making the victim accountable to pay for the funds they wired. DO NOT TRY TO CASH THE CHEQUE ENCLOSED—IT IS NOT VALID. Anyone with questions or concerns or has received such a letter are asked to contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at: 1-888-495-8501 to report the scam (the best time to call is between 8:30 - 9:30 am)

People have been receiving pop up windows on there computer from the Police Cyber Crimes stating that your computer has been locked due to pornography, terrorism and gambling. IN order to unlock your computer you must pay $100 dollars to Ukash. The scam ware program will then turn on your web cam. This is a scam. Do not open any pop up windows. The best way to protect your computer is to make sure your anti virus programs are up yo date and run regular virus checks on your computer. In the past week Princeton Kal Tire has been the victim of two break and enters. On each occasion the culprits entered the tire compound stealing large truck tires and wheels. During this same time period Kal Tire in Penticton and Merritt were also targeted with similar tires being stolen from these locations. This past Saturday was filled with moments that once again served me with reminders of why I live in and absolutely love this community. Halloween Family Fun Night was just awesome. Children were everywhere squealing with delight, dressed up and having tons of fun. Parents, grandparents, caregivers, adults and teens all joined in the spirit of the evening. There was incredible support from sponsors; The Town of Princeton, Copper Mountain Mining Operations Ltd., Princeton Crisis Assistance Society, Princeton Weyerhaeuser, Princeton Rotary, RDOS Brad Hope, Area H Director, Princeton Ground Search and Rescue, Cooper’s Foods and Princeton Loonie Bin & Bakery (Dawn Kastor). The support from our emergency services; Princeton RCMP, Princeton Volunteer Fire Brigade, BC Ambulance Service and the Princeton Extrication Society (Highway Rescue) was wonderful. The hard work and dedication from all the volunteers who brought the evening to the community was more than top-notch. People doing wonderful things together and for each other—just kind of makes things flow nicely. Funny how that works... Many people deserve thanks and much appreciation for this evening as well as those hosting all other events in our community do. At this time though, I’d like to give special appreciation to two gentlemen who have given countless hours of their time to the Exhibition grounds this year. Doug and Jim Bernard have volunteered their time before, during and after every event held. Repair and maintenance, preparation and clean up, building, painting and working the concession. Thank you to you both. Thank you as well to Terry Inglis, who keeps coming out of retirement to help.

Now, more than ever, the world needs Jiu Jitsu Dear Editor; For me, the hardest part wasn’t going to be signing up for a membership. It wasn’t going to be figuring out how to wear my gi or spending hours researching about it online. The hardest part was going to be walking through the front door. I knew that once I showed up and people saw me there I would have to do it. Something about Jiu Jitsu had been calling my name. I knew I had to try it but I was scared. When I stepped onto the mats for the first time, my heart was beating in my throat and doubt was flooding my mind. But after my first class, I was completely captivated. After giggling my way through the first half of class, making somewhat of a fool of myself trying to maneuver around the floor, I suddenly realized that I was having fun. A lot of fun! And after about a week I was hooked. I found myself loving my body, not for what it looked
like but for what it was capable of doing; for the power it possessed. I learned that I could do things I never thought possible. Jiu Jitsu was becoming fascinating and thrilling to me. It made me feel the way I did when I was a ballet dancer in my youth. It had everything I wanted: Discipline, grace, rhythm and technique. Jiu Jitsu reignited my love of moving across the floor. It awakened in me a passion for strategizing against an opponent. For me, Jiu Jitsu is not about fighting or prevailing. It is a choreographed dance between two people. It is about conquering your fear, testing your body, engaging your mind and perfecting your skills. It is about respecting yourself and respecting your opponent. Walking through the front door of the gym would still be difficult if it weren’t for Dave, my instructor. But his passion and dedication to the sport make it easy for me to want to keep coming back and keep getting better. His positive attitude and caring spirit is contagious.

Because of Dave and the rest of my teammates I enjoy coming to every class. They inspire me. I really believe that the world needs Jiu Jitsu now more than ever. Where fear and self-hate can seem to lurk in every doorway, Jiu Jitsu is there to break them down. It stares them in the face and makes them submit. Jiu Jitsu is for every man, every woman and every child. Now the easiest thing for me to do is walk through that gym door because I know each time I exit it again I will be stronger, stronger physically, stronger mentally, and stronger emotionally. Thank you Princeton for supporting a new gym. Thank you Vermilion Forks Fitness for brining me Jiu Jitsu. And thank you Dave for continuing to bring me through that door. The unknown? It’s hard to believe that where the present Copper Mountain Mining operations are, there was once a dynamic little town. The bottom of it literally has dropped out. In the beginning of the 1940s JOE SCHWARZ our vibrant school had two grades to a class , 1--12 with very dedicated capable teachers and a bible reading every morning followed by the lord’s prayer. The war was on and army cadets for boys and girls were compulsory including air raid drills. Miners could not quit their jobs and there was some food and liquor rationing. At the time there was no crises in belief as now whatever the spiritual perspective. A young priest, Fr. Donald Campbell based at St. Peters Princeton, his first assignment, entered the scene and participated with the people in the construction of a little church and named it St. Philomena. She was martyred at age thirteen in the third century A.D. and her remains uncovered in 1802 in the Roman catacombs. Her fascinating story can be googled on the internet. We were the first church alter boys in a Latin service and were certain St. Peter had a seasoned interpreter up there. Ministers, priests, male and female through the centuries have striven to bring the good news as they saw it to the whole world often at great peril. There were more Christian martyrs [dying because of their faith] in the 20th century than all previous centuries put together. The “Good News” known as “The “Golden Rule” as taught at school in Copper Mtn., meant loving your neighbour as yourself. You are a very unique being, a somebody. There’s a purpose to life in this world and the next. That is faith- a goodness. As it’s been said “, for those who don’t want to believe , no explanation is possible and for those who do believe no explanation is necessary”. Sounds simple. The one who brought this message was crucified for it. People have free will and practice their faith in their own way receiving a spirit of strength and joy especially when there is no where else to turn. As for sins ?— unless your a hoarder, sweep them under the rug if you haven’t a vacuum cleaner. We see a lot of goodness around us such as a recent great luncheon accompanied with a Granite Creek historical CD movie put on for the seniors by the Tulameen Community Club. Ms. Marty Hassle followed this with a list of the future endeavours. All very much appreciated! Their foresight, talent, commitment and compassion for a tiny community never ceases to amaze us They truly are a somebody!

HOUSE OF HORRORS...continued Consider purchasing non-food fun treats for those who come a-calling. They’ll be safer and more fun alternatives to sugar-laden candies. Or, healthy, individually wrapped foods can be another unique idea. Keep a first aid kit fully stocked and nearby in the event of accidents. It is also a good idea to learn CPR and The Heimlich Maneuver as an extra precaution for children who are gobbling up treats en route to your door. HAUNTING THE ’HOOD It’s easier to control safety at home, but while out and about, there may be inadvertent dangers. Explain that children should remain on the sidewalk or illuminated paths. They should know the danger of darting out into the street or across driveways and alleys. Drivers can have a difficult time making out children in the twilight. Obey all local traffic and pedestrian regulations, such as crossing at crosswalks. Assign a chaperone, either you or perhaps an older sibling, who can accompany younger children. Don’t let young kids go out alone. Children should not enter the homes of strangers. Be sure they are aware of this rule. Inform children not to indulge in their treats before they get home. AFTER THE PILLAGING Once trick or treating is over, the safety measures continue. Treats need to be thoroughly checked by an adult when children get home. Tampering is rare, but proper precautions should always be taken. Divide up the candy so that it can be enjoyed over the course of days following Halloween, and not just gorged on the day after. Make sure treats are age-appropriate, and keep candy out of the reach of young children. Some may pose a choking hazard.

The Tiny Tot Spook House was created by Dawne and Tim Graves, the Halloween Craft Room
with thanks to Erin Williams and family with assistance from Robin Kimmie and the Spooky Feel by Lynn Johnson and Lisa Carleton. Northern Lights Fireworks topped the evening off with an incredible fireworks display. With on and off light rain for most of the evening, the community was able to enjoy fun night until approximately 8:30 p.m., when a downpour hurried the evening to a close. A special thank you goes out to Lynch Bus Lines and Mr. Barth for providing a ride to and from fun night. Much appreciation goes out to all the sponsors of Halloween Family Fun Night and to the dedicated group of volunteers who made the evening such a success.

Monster head apples NUMBER OF SERVINGS: 8 APPLES These are not your typical apples-on-a stick! The smooth, melted frosting holds decorations in place, so it’s easy to be creative. Ingredients: • 8 forks or flat wooden sticks with round ends • 8 small apples • 1 tub vanilla ready-to-spreadfrosting • 1 ml (1/4 tsp) green food color • 16 fruit-flavoured, ring-shaped hard candies • 16 tiny, tart fruit-flavoured candies • 8 candy corn • 8 wax lips or monster teeth • 4 chewy fruit snack rolls

Directions: Cut waxed paper into 8 (8 x 15 cm / 8 x 6 in) pieces; place on work surface. Insert fork into stem end of each apple for handle. Remove lid and foil from can of frosting. Place can in microwave; microwave on high for 20 to 30 seconds or until frosting can be stirred smooth. Stir in green food colour until well blended. Holding 1 apple over large bowl to catch drips, spoon melted frost-
ing over apple to coat. Place coated apple on piece of waxed paper. Repeat with remaining apples and frosting. Press candies and wax lips into frosting on each apple to create face. Cut each snack roll in half crosswise; cut fringe on one long side. Wrap fringed snack roll pieces around top of apples for hair. Or, decorate as desired. Royal Canadian Legion News - George Pearkes Branch #56 - Princeton, B.C. FROM THE PRESIDENT Our next general meeting will be on Sunday November 18, at 1:00 p.m. This is a very important meeting as we are electing our executive officers for next year. We are always looking for members to take on an executive position— your support is necessary for us to continue to be successful. The next executive meeting is on November 24. This years Honours and Awards will be held Friday January 4, 2013, along with the Installation of Officers. A great potluck as always, cocktails at 5 dinner at 6 and ceremony at 7:00 p.m. The next Zone meeting will be held in Peachland on November18. As always, on Sunday, November 11 ceremonies at Veterans Square. This is our most important event of the year, hope to see you there. Ceremonies begin around 10:45 a.m., lunch will follow at the Legion Hall. The Legion Foundation is hosting a raffle with first prize of a Ford Escape. Tickets will soon be available at the Legion for $20.
The Price is Right night was very entertaining to everyone, thanks to all who participated. October 21—the Jean Smith Memorial crib tournament was held and was a great success thanks to Bob and Sharon Paterson. Wednesday night Legion Poker is still a great success, come out, join in and have some fun. November and December always bring a lot of catering to the Legion. Bernadette could always use some help in the kitchen and the hall. People are needed to help with setting up, taking down and with clean up. There will be inventory done November 1 at 10:00 a.m., help is needed for counting etcetera. Sunday, November 25 at around 3ish there will be a Grey Cup Party with pot luck snacks. Come on down and enjoy the game with some friends.
